Cano faces charges after allegedly battering deputies

An Aurora man who allegedly threatened to commit a massacre last year, firing a rifle at Oswego police officers, has been charged for a second time in the past month with battering a Sheriff’s deputy in the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Taylor J. Cano, 26, has been in custody awaiting trial at the jail, following a brief hospital stay, since the incident that occurred Aug. 29, 2015 in front of a home where he was staying in the 100 block of Ashlawn Avenue, Oswego.

On Nov. 15 at approximately 6:10 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies investigated a report of an aggravated battery at the

jail, Sheriff’s deputies said. During the investigation, police allege Cano battered two corrections deputies while they tried to retrieve Cano’s food tray from his cell. Both deputies were treated for cuts and bruises and released.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Cano with two counts of aggravat- Taylor J. ed battery, both Class 2 Cano felonies.

Cano also faces charges of aggravated battery to a peace officer at the jail from an incident Nov. 2, when Cano allegedly battered and tossed feces at a deputy.

In addition, Cano faces charges of possessing a weapon while in custody of the jail, when he was accused Jan. 30 of fabricating a stabbing instrument out of a toothbrush; the weapon was seized without incident, police reported.

Two Yorkville businesses failed tobacco age restriction compliance during a recent check by the Yorkville police.

Police conducted compliance checks Nov. 17 on all local businesses licensed to sell tobacco products.

Two businesses were found to be in violation of local ordinances and Illinois law during the checks. They were 7-Eleven, 1541 Sycamore Road; and Country Tobacco, 1427 Cannonball Trail, police said.

Yorkville police will be conducting tobacco compliance checks through the year and hope to reduce violations through enforcement and education of licenses, police said.

murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

In the August 2015 incident, two Oswego police officers shot and wounded Cano on Ashlawn Avenue in the village’s Cedar Glen subdivision.

State’s Attorney Eric Weis determined the actions of the officers to be justified. During his investigation, Weis said that prior to the incident Cano had several conversations with KenCom (911) dispatchers concerning his intent to commit harm against other individuals that day.

Cano also told dispatchers he was armed and would harm those who would come to help him.

Cano was found unfit to stand trial last November, but was found fit to stand trial in September, following a stay in a downstate mental hospital, according to court records.

Cano is scheduled for a hearing Nov. 30 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville in front of Judge Timothy McCann.

Minor injuries in crash One person was injured in a two-vehicle crash at Eldamain Road and River Road in Bristol Township Nov. 19 at 2:20 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. A slap on the wrist for meetings law violation Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis has given Oswego Township officials a collective slap on the wrist for violating the Illinois Open Meetings Act. As our news editor, Tony Scott, reported last week, Weis notified Township Supervisor Jim Detzler in a Nov. 8 letter that the township failed to properly post an agenda to a township board meeting held Sept. 13. The act requires the board and all local governing boards to publicly display their meeting agendas at the site of the meeting “not less than 48 hours in advance” of the meeting in question.

Weis, however, noted the township board has since taken steps to correct their violation of the law “by conducting separate meetings to allow for notice of the public of the meetings and items to be considered at the meeting. The public was in attendance and the action items were subsequently approved by the [township board] at these subsequent meetings.”

As a result of the board’s follow-up actions, Weis said, he has determined the board’s actions “mitigate any violations of the Open Meetings Act sufficient such that no further action is required by my office.”

Weis recommended Detzler, township trustees and the township clerk review the Open Meetings Act training that is required of all appointed and elected officials and available on the Illinois Attorney General’s website.

In addition, he strongly encouraged township officials to review with their attorney their procedures to prevent any future violations of the act.

Since 2012, state law has required all elected and appointed members of public bodies – including townships – that are subject to the Open Meetings Act to complete online training in the act no later than 90 days after taking

the oath of office. All local officials should welcome the requirement since the act is intended to promote transparency in government.

We believe Weis has done what he can to encourage township officials to comply with the act. Unfortunately, in situations like this where a clear violation of the act has occurred, we wish Weis could mandate that all of the officials involved successfully complete the Attorney General’s Open Meetings Act training a second time.

It’s evident that for Oswego Township officials their training in the act did not sink in the first time.

Our turkey day celebration older than the nation itself When President Franklin Roosevelt decided to move Thanksgiving from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday, I’ll bet my dad was not pleased.

He probably wasn’t upset because he didn’t like Thanksgiving, of course, but rather because he well and truly disliked President Roosevelt, primarily because of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. In fact, he disliked the president so much that he almost always refused to carry a Roosevelt dime in his pocket, changing them for Mercury dimes as quickly as possible.

But despite the grumbling of one Illinois farmer, Roosevelt was well-liked enough to win four terms in office.

Even so, when Roosevelt announced during the Great Depression that henceforth Thanksgiving would be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November instead of the last, my dad wasn’t the only one upset. After all, it had been the nation’s first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, who declared in 1863 that a national holiday of Thanksgiving should be held on the last Thursday of November.

We all know the first Thanksgiving in the New World was cooked up by the Pilgrims following their first successful harvest in 1621. Unfortunately, like a lot of historical conventional wisdom, that’s really not true.

Actually, 38 extremely relieved Englishmen who had arrived on the shores of the new colony of Virginia in 1619 aboard the tiny, 35-foot-long ship Margaret thanked their lucky stars for their survival during a heartfelt Thanksgiving service on Nov. 30 of that year. They’d spent 75 days at sea

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile aboard the Margaret, but agreed to wait four more days until they arrived at their true destination, Berkley Hundred, a few miles up the James River to disembark and get to work helping create what eventually became the United States.

A year later, in the autumn of 1620, the Pilgrims, Puritans who fled what they believed to be thoroughly Godless societies in England and Holland, arrived in the New World hoping to settle in Virginia. Unfortunately, their navigation was a bit off, the weather was stormy, and the Mayflower and its 102 passengers struck land at Cape Cod, much farther north than planned.

After exploring for a while, they decided to settle around what eventually became Plymouth Plantation, the first colony in New England.

That first winter was the last one for many Pilgrims. The ones who survived did so thanks mostly to the generosity of the local Native Americans – who, as yet, didn’t realize what these newcomers had in store for them. The survivors planted crops the next spring with the assistance of their neighbors, the Wampanoag Tribe under their leader Massasoit.

In particular, the Indians taught the English how to guarantee a successful corn harvest by including a codfish in each hill as fertilizer.

The Pilgrims remained friendly with the Wampanoags while Massasoit and his eldest son, Wamsutta, lived. But following Wamsutta’s death, Massasoit’s other son, Metacomet, who had adopted the English name

Philip, assumed leadership. Growing friction led to King Philip’s War, during which the Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive those first terrible years were virtually annihilated. It was the template for two and a half centuries of Native American subjugation and extermination to come as European settlers spread west all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Thanksgiving remained a mostly New England holiday for the next 200 years, although it did gradually spread west as Yankees carried the celebration with them as they settled other areas of the growing country.

During the depths of the Civil War in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first national day of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November.

With President Lincoln’s help, the celebration became national – at least in the states still loyal to the Union.

Following the war, most states passed laws making the last Thursday in November an official Thanksgiving Day. But then commercialization wandered into the picture.

In 1939, as the nation started clawing its way out of the Great Depression, Federated Department Stores chief Fred Lazarus Jr. persuaded President Franklin Roosevelt that a longer Christmas shopping season would greatly help the nation’s flagging economy (not to mention Federated Department Stores’ bottom line).

So that year, Roosevelt proclaimed

Thanksgiving remained a mostly New England holiday for the next 200 years, although it did gradually spread west as Yankees carried the celebration with them as they settled other areas of the growing country.

Thanksgiving would henceforth be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, thus adding another week to the Christmas shopping season during many years. Within a few years most states quit their grumbling and passed laws making November’s fourth Thursday Thanksgiving Day. Some confusion was inevitable. In

a telegram to the president on Nov. 4, 1939, Leota and Helen, proprietors of The Alliance Restaurant in Alliance, Ohio, wrote: “Congratulations on your reelection. When shall we serve our Thanksgiving Turkey, 21st? Or 28th?” Calendar makers were particularly hard-hit because they usually printed their calendars a couple years in advance. New York University complained the change would disrupt their annual Thanksgiving football game in 1939.

But Roosevelt prevailed and Thanksgiving is still the fourth Thursday of November. Given the current parochial partisan political wrangling, it wouldn’t be surprising if somebody didn’t suggest moving it back to the last Thursday just to spite a former Democratic President.

1906: This large steam-driven dredging machine got a lot of attention in 1906, and a rare local photo in the Record. The machine was used to dredge a ditch about five miles long and eight yards wide along the Rob Roy Creek. injury while hauling gravel. Richa Patel is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she will study Pre-Med. A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration Honors and Activities Richa Patel is the daughter of Lina and Rajendra Patel, and an athletic and academic stand-out.

Through her involvement in a host of athletic, musical, educational and volunteer activities, Richa said she feels prepared for her pursuits in the medical field.

Beside being a member of the Art Club, the Tennis Team, Chamber Strings, Key Club, TRY Club, and a Student Ambassador, Richa has also found her place as a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and the Rho Kappa History Honor Society.

She said these opportunities have helped her better her communication skills, negotiation skills, critical thinking skills, and build her self confidence.

When asked about the sacrifices she has made to be so involved, Richa said there were none. Sure, she spent hours upon hours every week volunteering, practicing and helping others outside the classroom, but they’ve made her a better person, she said.

“Honestly, I do not believe I have made any sacrifices to be in these school and community activities because I enjoyed every bit of what I was doing,” she said. “Rather than sacrifices, I have made commitments to each of the activities I belong to.”

One of Richa’s favorite activities outside of school is volunteering at Presence Mercy Medical Center as a new volunteer trainer. She has been charged with the task both her junior and senior years.

“I believe volunteering at Presence Mercy Medical Center has had the most impact on me. This is because volunteering connects me to people from different backgrounds to work towards a common goal; improving community,” she said. “By doing this I can interact with new people, learn new skills and build up my confidence.”

Healthy mix of seniors, juniors ready to lead Yorkville team

The Yorkville boys basketball team has a healthy mix of veterans and firstyear varsity players to find the right combination for success on the court this winter.

Seven seniors return from a team that finished 11-17 overall under firstyear coach Mike Dunn, while seven juniors complete the 14-player roster.

“We have a good group that knows what the program is, how to practice and how to play and have been through the wars and back,” Dunn said. “The juniors are a good group who are still learning the tricks of the trade. It’s a good mix. We’re excited about the season and looking to just continuing to improve, continue building our culture.”

Senior and three-year starter Austin Avery returns to the post with support from seniors Jason Lewan and Joel Salinas. Senior guard Jake Eberhart played starter minutes last year and will be a big presence for the Foxes again this

winter, as well as senior point guard Jonathan Suarez and senior guards Alexx Nauman ad Nick Owens.

“Those kids will be our core rotation guys, and we’re going to implement the junior guys after they have a chance to learn,” Dunn said.

Juniors Chad Assell, Nate Douglas, Logan Habada and Bradley Turner provide depth at the guard position, while Mitchell Glass and Adam Green will help out from the wing with Nate Douglas in the post.

Yorkville begins the season Monday in the Dean Riley Thanksgiving Tournament in Ottawa, opening pool play against Metamora before facing Pontiac and Streator. Crossover play takes place on Nov. 26 to close the tournament.

Yorkville will open Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference play on Dec. 2, hosting Kaneland to kick off a fourgame home stand that includes Plano, Geneseo and Waubonsie Valley. That stretch leads the Foxes into the Plano Christmas Classic, which takes place Dec. 26-30, to close the month.

On November 3, 2016, TransCanada’s ANR Pipeline Company (ANR) filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requesting authorization to modify the infrastructure at ANR’s existing Sandwich Compressor Station, Hampshire Meter Station, Tiffany East Meter Station, Kewaskum Compressor Station and replacement of an approximate 0.54 mile associated lateral, and related facilities. This project, called the Wisconsin South Expansion Project (“Project”), is subject to the jurisdiction of FERC under the Natural Gas Act. FERC assigned Docket No. CP17-9-000 to this application.

ANR’s proposed Wisconsin South Expansion Project is required by the present and future public convenience and necessity. Upon completion, the Project will expand ANR’s delivery capability into the Northern Illinois and Wisconsin markets to meet growing natural gas demand in these areas.

Yorkville High School hosted its fourth annual Veterans Day assembly Friday, Nov. 11. Just about every sophomore, junior or senior at YHS was able to hear one of seven speakers, from multiple branches of the military. Students also had the opportunity to walk around the room after the speech to meet and ask questions with the six other veterans in attendance. This provided a great opportunity not only to recognize Veterans Day, but also to help shed light on the sacrifices and risks that the men and women of our armed forces put forth all in the name of freedom. The YHS band played “The Star Spangled Banner” and “Taps.” Students said the Pledge of Allegiance and thanked veterans for their service. Veterans in attendance were John Drent, Joshua Zaha, Lester Ries, William Arterburn Sr., Tom Grimes, Myron Somersett, Melanie Campos and Tomo Coppers. YGS staff, students and families purchased flags in honor or memory of service men and women. Proceeds of the flags will be donated to a local veterans’ organization.

Spirit Cheerleading All Stars of Yorkville entered its first competition of the season on Nov. 13. American Cheer Power competed against six teams. The Mighty Minis Pride (8 and under) took first place and the Level 1 High Point Award. Passion, the Jr. Level 1 team, took first place. Inspire, a Level 2 youth team, captured first place. Vengeance, the Jr. Level 2 team, captured first place and the Level 2 High Point Award, and also secured gold for a paid bid to the U.S. Finals and first D2 Summit wildcard bit awarded to Spirit. Int3nsity received fifth place as a Jr. Level 3 team. Envy won first place for the Senior Level 4 co-ed squad.

Yorkville swimmers end season at state meet KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The IMSA-Yorkville co-op girls swim team capped the season at the IHSA state meet last Friday in Evanston.

The 200-yard free relay team of Linnea Lee-Brown, Brooke Jensen, Colleen O’Connor and Polina Bondarenko qualified out of the Metea Valley Sectional one week earlier with a school-record time, and ended up in 26th place after Friday’s prelims with a time of 1:38.70 “The state meet was super exciting and the girls had lots of fun,” swim coach Kevin Satler said. “They all swam well, but the competition was very fast and we did not make it back to finals.”

Newark Varsity: The Norsemen beat Hinckley Big Rock 48-39 to close the Somonauk Tim Humes Breakout Tournament on Friday. Jasmine Mitchell had 17 points, Alyssa Schofield had 10 points and 6 assists and

Meggie Scott had nine points and six assists. Becca Sweeney was strong on the boards with nine rebounds.

“I was pleased with our ball movement throughout the game and am proud of our 3-1 record at the end of this first week of play. We will continue to work hard and improve every game,” Newark coach Barb Scott said.

Yorkville Sophomore: Yorkville (3-0) defeated Conant 40-31 despite trailing 11-4 early in the game. Olivia Ross scored 10 of her team-high 12 points in the second quarter to help turn the game around. Haylee Reyes contributed 10 points and five rebounds. Courtney Hall scored nine points.

Wheaton St. Francis scored the game’s first six points but the Foxes tallied 15 points in the first quarter to take the lead and gained momentum for the double figure victory. Ross led with 15 points and six rebounds. Delaney Seeman dished out five assists and had six rebounds. Claudia Grunwald’s seven rebounds to led the team. The team had 17 steals with Delaney, Jayshawna Smith and Calli Bishop getting three each.

Now entering its third season, basketball isn’t new to Yorkville Christian – but everything is about to change for the Mustangs.

In February, Yorkville Christian High School received full recognition to be an IHSA member school from the Illinois State Board of Education, and in turn will now compete in the Class 1A playoffs. Yorkville Christian will no longer compete in the Illinois Christian Conference, but rather as an independent school.

Additional changes include the addition of the Lisle Thanksgiving Tournament and the Plano Christmas Classic in December.

“I’m trying to get them battle tested, but at the same time be competitive. We’re the fourth smallest school in the state,” Yorkville Christian coach Aaron Sovern said. “We’re trying to develop a culture and the Mustang way. This has really been a positive step this year.”

Top returning players include junior guard Noah Lewis, senior guard Austin Wisniowicz and senior forward Dimitri Milakis.

“Noah and Austin are our two returning leading scorers and they are going to have a lot of responsibility,” Sovern said.

“Noah is probably one of the better athletes in the area and has really improved his game over the summer. He’s been working on his jump shot and we’re looking for big things from him. Austin was new to basketball last year and had about 11 points per game, and he’s developed into one of the better shooters in the area as well.”

Sophomore guard Jadon Pryor and freshman guard Christian Sovern are also expected to impact the Yorkville Christian lineup.

The rest of the nine-player roster is made up of freshmen.

“We don’t have a lot of size, so our mantra is going to be running up and down and shooting the ball and playing pressure defense,” Sovern said. “Our goal is to be ready by mid-February for our first regional action.”

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT Foxes take runner-up finish; Daffenberg named All-Tournament

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville girls basketball team made its impressive debut in the York Thanksgiving Tournament last week with a 3-0 start to reach the championship game.

The Foxes (3-1) met Trinity in Friday’s finale, and despite a close game throughout, Trinity defeated Yorkville 62-53. Lauren Daffenberg led Yorkville with 24 points while Lindsay Harrison scored 12 and Audrey Macciomei added nine. Daffenberg was named to the All-Tournament team.

“We led in the third quarter [29-28], and that’s one of the things we’re going to talk about this week. It was close; we were really within four to five points for the majority of the game,” Yorkville coach Kim Wentsis said.

In the final pool play game on Nov. 17, Yorkville defeated Conant 54-33 behind a strong defensive game. Daffenberg knocked in 22 points while Katie Nolan scored 12 and Harrison added 10 points.

“We had a day of practice in between and we were able to focus on the things we needed to clean up and come up with a better game plan for Conant,” Wentsis said.

Yorkville previously recorded a 7357 win over St. Francis in Game 2 of pool play on Nov. 15. The Foxes had balanced scoring from Macciomei (15 points), Daffenberg (15 points) and Nolan (14 points).

“Being in this tournament for the first time, I didn’t know what to expect. In the back of my mind, I knew we were going to be competitive so we definitely lived up to my expectations,” Wentsis said.

“These are all new teams and it was definitely a new challenge for us, but I thought we did a phenomenal job against them. I think the kids really had a great attitude going in, and they weren’t afraid of anyone. They were ready to play.”

Yorkville will return to play on Nov. 29, traveling to West Aurora for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
