KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Yorkville is going to continue to participate in the Aurora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau for the next year, but extending the relationship beyond that is up in the air.

The City Council approved a resolution at its Nov. 8 meeting in a 7-1 vote that states it will participate in a special municipal marketing pilot program with the bureau to market the City of Yorkville.

Extending the city’s membership in the bureau beyond Dec. 14, 2017, however, is contingent upon the success of the program, the resolution states.

Alderman Carlo Colosimo, who has voiced criticism of the bureau in the past, cast the lone “no” vote on the resolution.

At a recent Administration Committee meeting, bureau Executive Director Cort Carlson said 40 percent of the city’s annual contribution to the bureau – approximately $28,000 – would go toward such a marketing plan. The remainder would be “dedicated to regional destination marketing, group sales of the AACVB service area, operational support of the organization and the benefits of destination membership,” according to the presentation.

The bureau would work with a city representative to develop advertising strategies, desired audience and market reach, according to the presentation.

A review report will be provided by the bureau at the conclusion of the marketing plan, according to Carlson’s presentation.

Legislative forum for seniors set Friday KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Kendall County residents will discuss federal and state issues concerning aging and disability at a legislative forum on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington St., Oswego. Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. and the forum itself will start at 9:30 a.m.

The forum’s purpose is for seniors, people with disabilities, caregivers and their advocates to discuss issues affecting those groups with federal and state legislators. The program will include presentations on topics of concern, presentations by state legislators representing Kendall County, and questions from the audience.

the 11th District and U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren of the 14th District have been invited to the forum, but they are likely to be in Washington, and may be represented by aides.

Veterans share their experiences at Chapel on the Green event

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Seven veterans from several branches of the military turned back the hands of time as they spoke Sunday to a group of about 70 people about what their time in the service was like during a veterans program at the historic Chapel on the Green in Yorkville.

Carol Seeley was chairman of the event, Bob Johnston was master of ceremonies and Martha Price provided music.

Oswego resident Michael Cravatta, 91, was the youngest of five brothers who served during World War II. And all five came home safely after serving their time, he said.

Cravatta joined the Navy in March 1942 and was assigned to an LST, a naval vessel he said was created to support amphibious operations by carrying large numbers of vehicles, cargo and troops to distant shores where they were to fought in numerous missions.

“I had a brother who was stationed in Pearl Harbor,” he said, noting that his older brother Paul had worked on the USS Arizona, one of the ships that was sunk by the Japanese during their surprise attack. Paul was promoted and reassigned to the Saratoga before the attack.

Another brother, Dave, was a paratrooper in Europe and participated in the Normandy invasion, Cravatta said.

He recalled this brother telling him that when they landed in Normandy on Omaha beach, everything was quiet until the Germans came out of the hills and attacked them.

“He told me he killed a few Germans himself,” he said.

His brother John was stationed in Texas, and broke his eardrum while boxing so they would not send him overseas, Cravatta said.

Mathre said he became a road crew member as a pick and shovel operator.

He was married while in the service and their first child was born while he was in the military. Mathre now has three children, 10 grandchildren, and 25 great-grand children. He recently celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary.

He was discharged Dec. 9, 1952, and joined the American Legion as soon as he got home. In March 1953, Mathre joined the Newark Fire Department and served as its chief for 52 years.

Gerald Weidert of Oswego served in the Marines from 1959 to 1975 and in the Army Reserves from 1976 to 85.

Local traffic: good news and bad news Frustrated by daily backups? Call your lawmakers Have you tried to get out of Kendall County in the morning or return to it in the early evening? We have and from what we see day-in and day-out on county highways – especially on Routes 47 and 30 and Orchard Road – it’s not getting any easier.

Like clockwork, every weekday morning traffic backs up in the northbound lane on Route 47 from Route 30 south, sometimes all the way to Corneils Road in Yorkville.

Meanwhile, the story is the same in Montgomery on Route 30 as eastbound motorists line up at the traffic light at Orchard Road, while northbound motorists on Orchard Road await their chance to cross or turn on to Route 30.

In the evening, as the commuters return home, the situation is exactly reversed as traffic backs up, often for miles, in the southbound lanes on Route 47 from Sugar Grove to Yorkville, and westbound traffic on Route 30 backs up east of Orchard Road in Montgomery.

In the Kane County portion of Montgomery motorists back up most evenings in the southbound lanes of Orchard Road from Route 30 to Aucutt Road.

The good news for motorists who have no choice but to travel Routes 47 and Route 30 to reach work and school each day is that the Illinois Department of Transportation is far

along with engineering studies for the reconstruction and widening of the two highways.

The bad news, however, is that it will likely be many more years before the two highways are fully improved.

Importantly, IDOT has not has not yet allocated any of the millions in dollars in revenues needed to pay for actual construction.

So what’s a motorist frustrated by the daily backups but with no choice but to continue to use the two highways to do? We recommend contacting local state and federal lawmakers and urge them to actively support efforts to fund the two projects.

Motorists should also encourage municipal and county officials to back efforts for interim or piecemeal improvements to the two highways. For

example, Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley and other village officials have been actively working to encourage the installation of additional traffic turn lanes at the Route 30 and Orchard Road intersection. The lanes could serve to speed traffic flow until the intersection can be fully improved.

In Yorkville the accident-prone intersection of Route 47 and Galena Road is long, long overdue for a makeover that would include additional turn lanes. The Yorkville City Council should adopt a resolution urging IDOT to move ahead with some interim improvements at the intersection.

Most importantly, motorists should also remember to allow for extra time and be patient while traveling the two highways during morning and evening rush-hour periods.

Kendall County’s 175-year-long road to today Kendall County’s modern history got its start as farmers moved to the grove-dotted prairies bordering the Fox River to make new lives for their families. Some of the earliest settlers came up from the south, but they found the expansive prairies oppressive and not at all like the forests out of which they were used to hacking a hardscrabble living, and most soon moved on.

The settlers with staying power came, for the most part, from the old Middle Colonies, particularly New York, and from the rocky hills of New England. Some moved in easy, gradual stages, pausing sometimes for a few years in Ohio and Indiana before finally arriving in what was then the western frontier state of Illinois.

They often traveled in family and neighborhood groups. Genealogists soon find when tracing their ancestors’ path from east to west that the same names keep popping up in communities where those restless pioneers stopped.

And not only that, but they tended to bring the familiar names of towns where they lived along with them, too.

Thus, Hudson’s name was brought west from New York and originally given to what is now the village of Oswego. But in 1837, when a post office was granted to the thriving village, the government named it Lodi, and it became a town with two names.

The promoters of Hudson, however, were dismayed and carried the name with them as they, a footloose group, moved north and a little west to settle in what eventually became Hudson, Wisconsin.

In fact, if you look at a map of New York’s Finger Lakes region and the path of the Erie Canal, you can see how attached pioneers from that region were to their hometown names, because they’re mirrored up and down the Fox River, from Batavia and Geneva to Oswego, Yorkville and Newark.

Those settlers also brought their respect for New York’s activist governor, DeWitt Clinton, with them as well, naming two counties – DeWitt and Clinton – in Illinois in his honor, not to mention the villages of DeWitt and Clinton (the largest town in DeWitt County).

So this hardy band of New Yorkers and Vermonters and other New Englanders came west and discovered the deep, rich topsoil of the Fox Valley, and here most of them stayed. And in fact, many of their descendants still live in the Fox Valley communities

their ancestors settled.

The original settlers were soon leavened by the arrival of German, English and Scots immigrants who were seeking their own land where they could raise their families and prosper.

They were soon joined by Norwegians and a few Swedes and Danes.

The Norwegians settled in and around Norway just across the Kendall County line in LaSalle County, but quickly spread north to Newark, Helmar and Lisbon in Kendall County.

Like the earlier German arrivals, the Scandinavians brought their Lutheran faith and their churches rose near the earlier settlers’ Methodist, Congregational and Presbyterian churches.

Besides their faith, most of those early pioneer groups brought an appreciation of the importance of education with them. The earliest schools were held wherever room could be found, with teachers hired by collecting subscriptions from interested parents. By the 1850s, the Illinois General Assembly approved funding public schools through property tax levies, and one-room rural schools began popping up all over the county.

At one time or another, about 125 schools served country and town students in Kendall County. Many of these schools were closely tied to neighborhood churches. The Union School, which now sits at the Kendall County Historical Society’s Lyon Farm and Village, was used as a

school during the week and for religious services on Sunday. In Oswego Township, the German Methodists on Oswego Prairie east of the village built a church with a basement classroom, which served as a public school on weekdays and Sunday School on the weekends, with church services held on the building’s main floor.

Farming wasn’t the only economic engine driving Kendall County, of course. When the railroad pushed west of Aurora in the early 1850s through northern Kendall County, Marcus Steward agreed to build a town if the railroad passed through his land.

Which he did, creating the city of Plano, Kendall’s only industrial town where reapers and harvesters were manufactured and where foundries created the iron and steel needed for them. Plano was even Kendall’s “Motor City” for a few years when Holsman automobiles were turned out there in the early 1900s.

And we shouldn’t forget the inventions, either. From improved grain reapers to Messenger Gopher cultivators to the Plano Potato Planter to Scott Cutter’s innovative electrical and phone line insulators, Kendall inventors were busy coming up with new ideas, creating and improving things designed to make life easier – and themselves rich.

FORUM To the Editor: What provisions need to be kept with the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare): President-elect Trump stated the first thing he is going to do after taking office is to “get rid of Obamacare.” There are some parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that I feel should be kept.

1. Before the ACA, insurance companies used to be able to deny a person coverage for any pre-existing condition they deemed feasible (if one had cancer, heart disease, asthma etc. your insurer could tell you “we are not going to cover you for this”).

2. Before the ACA, insurers could cancel your plan if you got sick. The law changed that.

3. There are many people on both sides of the aisle who see great benefit of allowing children to stay on their parents plan until they are 26.

If you feel the same way I do, you need to get on the phone to your representative and senators and tell them how you feel. Then the question is, what do you do with the 20 million people that now have insurance coverage because of the ACA. Pat McNamara Yorkville

What will he do next?

To the Editor: A man becomes president but no one likes him. The people in his party cut wide paths to avoid him and several told him to drop out. Staunch Republican newspapers endorsed his opponent. The Republican Speaker of the House didn’t want him in his own state. And they think he will work hand and hand with them?

During the primary Donald Trump sounded like Bernie Sanders at times. The day after the election he exits a meeting with President Obama and has softened his stance on killing Obamacare. He has no allegiance to his voters because many were Democrats who flipped and he got fewer Republican votes than McCain or

Romney. He has a record of being on both sides of many issues. His biggest challenge will be trying not to make decisions that benefit him and his empire.

On day two it appears that his cabinet will be a tight circle of loyalists from his campaign. That means the bubble is forming quickly and his view of the world may become very skewed. There is not a single pundit who can safely say what our new President will do next.

If you don’t have a Twitter account, now is the time to set it up so you can be in the know about what’s coming next because Trump will tell you in 144 characters every time.

Intolerant liberals

To the Editor: Well, here we are. As I watched the election results mount, I was depressed to see Illinois as a lone smudge of blue in a sea of red. Once again, Illinois waved off the opportunity to move toward reality.

During this campaign, I joined an online political forum that had members from all over the world. The common thread of liberal behavior on that forum made it clear that polite, intelligent people would not tolerate them as close friends. The filthy names they called Trump supporters would choke a billy goat. It was curious how they stopped posting their hateful threads the day after the election.

During the years of Obama, I have had enough exposure to liberals to know that they either lie or are ignorant of simple facts, and they are extremely intolerant.

For instance: Remember the Chicago liberals saying that concealed carry permits would mean blood and bodies in the streets? An hour of research on the Internet checking what happened in other states told me that nothing of the sort would happen, and it didn’t; at least, not from making it possible for law-abiding citizens to carry a firearm.

After several more stops he spent more than 10 of his last 13 months in the field, armed to catch infiltrators.

John Milburn of Oswego, who served in the Army from 1966 to 1968, said a veteran has the honor and distinction of serving and the responsibility and the sacrifice that comes with serving, especially overseas.

“Now anyone entering the military is a volunteer, but back in 1966, I was not a volunteer,” he said. “I was doing well in my job, I had graduated college, married and was trying to further my career. I came home from work on Oct. 14, 1966, which was my birthday and there in the mail was my greeting – you’ve been inducted into the Army.”

Milburn went to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and then to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was an artillery surveyor because of his math background. After completing advanced training, 30 of his fellow soldiers were sent to Vietnam.

He said 30 names were called and he thought he was going to stay in the states, until an additional two were called, which included him.

Milburn was then sent to the DMZ to patrol local villages. Being able to read maps and coordinates made him an important person for this work, he said.

“The things I remembered most other than the heat, rain and war was Christmas because it was such a lonely time,” he said. “Once it was over, I realized I had four months left. I could have extended for 90 days and got out early, but I don’t believe in pressing my luck.”

Richard Gardner of Oswego, who served in the Army from 1966 to 1968, said he was drafted in 1966. His father tried to get him to enlist in the Navy

Reserve in Aurora, but he did not want to give up four years.

Gardner was assigned to a mortar U.S. Calvary, Infantry Division, which meant no walking. He was working on a 4-deuce mortar track used for indirect firing at targets three or four miles away. They also did security work and mine sweeping in the jungle areas.

Gardner said he was asked to extend for another six months to avoid duty back in the states.

“But I had seen others who did this and it did not turn out too well for them, so I went back to the states where I was sent to Yuma [Arizona] Proving Ground to serve the rest of my time,” he said.

When he learned that World War II vets were visiting areas where they fought, he decided to return to Vietnam and was able to find such a tour and visit with the people – even the North Vietnamese who they had been fighting.

Cliff Westphal of Yorkville served in the Coast Guard from 1966 to 1970, receiving basic training in New Jersey.

“Little did I know what I would experience during the next four years,” he said.

He was assigned to the USCGC Ingham, a cutter built in 1936. He was stationed in the damage control department to keep the ship floating. He said they did a lot of search and rescue, much of it in the North Atlantic.

“In March 1968 we got orders to go to Vietnam working with the Navy swift boats on various missions. We even had a firing mission with the battleship New Jersey, something very few Coast Guard cutters ever do,” he said.

He said six of the Ingham crew were taken to villages as part of a medical team each morning and picked up in the evening. And his ship went through three hurricanes, and two typhoons with 30- to 40-foot waves. The Ingham is now a floating museum in Key West, Florida, for all maritime people who served.

“I spent three hours taking my wife through it, showing her where I lived for four years,” he said.

The Newark Village Board paid tribute to Veterans at their November meeting.

Several board members and some in the audience responded by standing.

In regular business the board addressed the recent annual audit.

Several items were marked by the auditor as needing attention. Darald Nelson reviewed the audit for the board and made suggestions for next year. The board accepted the audit.

Representative of NewarkNet, a local computer company, addressed the board concerning Blast Inc’s request for use of the water tower as a base for a computer service antenna.

NewarkNet’s antenna is located at CHS-Elburn’s grain leg and is very close to the water tower. They outlined the problems and restrictions that could occur by having two antennas so close together.

They addressed the offer that Blast had made for service to the village. The matter was tabled until December.

The board also addressed insurance for the village.

Two bids were received for 2017. The board approved a change to Illinois Counties Risk Management Trust. The annual premium of $16,978 saves the village about $2,700 annually.

The board also addressed the plan to trade one lawn mower as in the past. The new mower would be purchased in May 2017, and be under warranty for two years. The purchase was approved.

WinterFest is set for Dec. 3 with a snow/ice date of Dec. 4. Activities will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a 1K run sponsored by Newark Grade School. Activities at the firehouse, Charles B. Phillips Library and Fern Dell Museum begin at 5 p.m., followed by fireworks and a Lighted Fire Truck Parade at 7 p.m.

One thing to keep in mind is that you need to focus. There is a huge mental approach that can be a difference maker when it comes to success or failure. You don’t want to waste a shot, do you? Rather, you want to make every one count.

Learning to concentrate, to be in the proper state of mind to hunt doesn’t come overnight, but it’s a skill that you can certainly learn and continue to work at improving.

Rushing a shot isn’t uncommon, but you can do better than that, especially when your target is on the move. While you have to be ready to shoot, you need to commit to aiming carefully and find the spot on your target that you wish to hit. For instance, an inexperienced hunter may put the crosshairs on the entire deer. That’s a mistake.

Instead, place your shot and then take it. You also need to put yourself in a position to take a second shot if it’s required.

Remember that to hunt, you usually have to be patient. There are certainly days where you may want to leave your stand or blind prematurely, but doing so could cause you to miss excellent opportunities that are forthcoming. Stay where you’re at and be ready. What benefit will you receive by leaving early anyway?

Finally, take care of your gun. Keep it nice and clean so when you think game is coming, you’re gun is ready to function properly.

Yorkville School District thanks A Bounty of Best Wishes at Board of Education members KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Individuals who volunteer to serve on boards of education dedicate hundreds of hours of their personal time working to ensure the students who live in their community receive a proper education. In appreciation of their unselfish, and too often unrecognized,efforts, Yorkville CUSD 115 is joining communities throughout the state to say “thank you” to local school board members during American Education Week and recognize these public servants for their commitment and contributions to public education.

Boards of Education consist of seven school district residents elected to serve four-year terms without pay.

Yorkville CUSD 115 Board of Education members are: Dr. Robert Brenart, Dr. Lynn Burks, Dave Dockstader, Dean Fisher, Tom Kozlowicz, Jason Senffner, and Ashley Shields.

Each school board member is responsible to comply with mandatory training laws, review hundreds of educational documents and proposals, adopt goals and policies to meet state and local requirements, ensure the

district has the necessary resources to pursue its goals, and monitor the district’s performance so students remain on track for college or careers.

“Board of education members must make tough decisions that affect not only our school, but the entire community,” said Yorkville District 115 Superintendent Timothy Shimp. “Their choices impact our daily lives and help our community grow and thrive.”

As community trustees for the schools, District 115 school board members have oversight for an annual budget of approximately $80 million; approximately 6,000 students in pre-kindergarten through high school; more than 850 employees; and nine schools.

“Board members give up their personal and family time to advocate for greater student opportunities, and to provide local governance to our educational system. They arrested Jackson T. Rogers, 21, of the 200 block of West Center Street, Sandwich, for DUI after failing sobriety tests and providing a breath sample over the 0.08 limit. Jackson was transported to the Kendall County Jail.

Oswegoland Park District on Winrock Road in Oswego Township Nov. 14 for a report of five aluminum soffits damaged over the weekend.

Arrested on warrant Sheriff’s deputies stopped Juan Alejandro Herrera Hernandez, 34, of the 600 block of East Galena Blvd., Aurora, for speeding on Nov. 10 near the intersection of Route 34 and Orchard Road. Deputies found that Herrera Hernandez had a valid DeKalb County warrant for failure to appear. Deputies arrested Herrera Hernandez and took him to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville for processing.

Fraudulent charges investigated • Sheriff’s deputies investigated a report by a Boulder Hill resident of credit card fraud that occurred on Oct. 27. Police said an investigation determined that a fraudulent anti-virus company received the resident’s bank account and credit card numbers and was continuously charging the accounts. The incident is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

• An Oswego Township woman reported to sheriff’s deputies that on Oct. 18 someone used her identity and credit card information to make purchases in Europe.

DuPage DUI warrant Sheriff’s deputies arrested Charles Linberg Obrien, 46, of the 70 block of Springdale Road in Boulder Hill after police, conducting a well-being check, discovered that Obrien had a warrant out of DuPage County for failure to appear on a DUI charge.

Homeless man arrested lying on roadway Sheriff’s deputies arrested Steven Matthew Belinski, 38, homeless, after he was observed lying on the roadway in the 5000 block of Schlapp Road in Oswego Township at around 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

Belinski was wrapped in a blanket and police said he was creating a traffic hazard. According to police, Belinski refused to provide his personal information on request and also failed to follow orders issued by deputies.

BRIEFS

Drug, DUI, other charges Yorkville police arrested Casey D. Herlihy, 18, of the 2600 block of Saint Charles Road, Belwood, Ill., after police were called regarding a suspicious vehicle on Cannonball Trail at Carly Circle on the morning of Nov. 12.

It was discovered that Herlihy had been driving under the influence of drugs, police said. Upon searching Herlihy and his passenger, a juvenile, several different controlled substances were found in their possession along with a “large amount” of cannabis and cash, police said.

Herlihy was arrested on eight felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver, along with a DUI. Herlihy’s juvenile passenger was cited for possession of a controlled substance and released to a parent, police said.

Later that same morning, police responded to a call about a damaged tree in the 1000 block of Independence Boulevard. Herlihy was also cited for failure to report a traffic crash related to that incident.

Structure fire at business Yorkville police assisted the Bristol-Kendall Fire Department on a structure fire call at a business located in the 700 block of East Veterans Parkway. The fire occurred at 7:32 p.m. on Nov. 9, and only one business was affected by the fire, police said.

Suspended license • Yorkville police cited Delisha A. Smith, 34, of the 4000 block of Garritano, Yorkville, for driving with a suspended license Nov. 8 at 6:12 p.m. on Game Farm Road

• Yorkville police cited Jacquelyn J. Holmes, 20, of the 1000 block of Kate Drive, Yorkville, on Nov. 11 for driving with a suspended license. Holmes bonded on scene.

LaSalle County warrant Yorkville police arrested Jason Kuehlem, 18, of the 2000 block of Elm Lane in Ottawa, following his being stopped for expired registration. Police discovered during the stop that Kuehlem had an arrest warrant from LaSalle County, and he was transported to the Kendall County Jail.

Vehicle burglary, transmission theft Yorkville police were called to a business in the 1200 block of Deer Street on Nov. 8 for a report of a burglary to a motor vehicle.

It was discovered that a stereo system with a value of $1,300 was removed from the vehicle, police said. On that same day and time, police were called to the same address for a report of a vehicle transmission being removed from the business.

Traffic violations • Baily Thevenot of the 200 block of Liszka Lane, Oswego, Nov. 9 for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

• Yorkville police cited a juvenile for failure to reduce speed following an accident Nov. 7 at the intersection of Route 34 and Cannonball Trail. A juvenile passenger in the vehicle that the cited juvenile’s vehicle struck was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment of injuries.

Tip leads to Montgomery woman’s arrest

A Montgomery woman was arrested based on a tip received through Kendall County Crime Stoppers.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Catherine Myers, 26, of Montgomery on Nov. 4, as she was wanted on a Kendall County warrant for failing to appear in court on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Myers had been featured on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page, and was apprehended due to a tip received through the Kendall County Crime Stoppers, police said. Myers had been a fugitive in the county since Oct. 21, police said.

Aurora men charged in Boulder Hill burglary

Two Aurora men are facing criminal charges related to a Boulder Hill home burglary that occurred Dec. 21, 2015.

A resident of the 200 block of Fernwood Road reported to Kendall County sheriff’s deputies that two unknown subjects entered the residence without permission and removed property.

Following an investigation by the sheriff’s office, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office on Oct. 26 charged Alfonso Niño, 21, of Aurora with one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony. Niño’s bond was set at $50,000 and he remains in custody at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville following his arrest by the Aurora Police Department, police said.

Also charged with a count of burglary was Jose Arzate, 19, of Aurora, who turned himself in Nov. 7 and remains in custody at the Kendall County Jail, police said.

Pre-diabetes is the stage before type 2 diabetes, where your blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Your fasting glucose level will test between 100-125 if you have pre-diabetes; this warning sign indicates that without intervention you could develop diabetes in the next 5-10 years, depending on your lifestyle. Over time, diabetes can lead to heart disease, neuropathy, blindness, and in women, complications with pregnancy.

Dr. Nuzhat Chalisa is an Endocrinologist with the Channahon Healthcare Center of Morris Hospital in Channahon, IL, who treats patients with diabetes and metabolism disorders.

“Approximately 86 million people in the U.S., that’s 1 in 3 adults, have pre-diabetes,” said Dr. Chalisa. “And approximately 90% of those people don’t know they have it.”

It’s very important to get checked for prediabetes. “Patients at a high risk of developing

pre-diabetes usually have a family history of diabetes,” said Dr. Chalisa. “Other risk factors include obesity, hypertension, and a history of gestational diabetes. A simple screening test to check your fasting glucose level is all that’s needed to determine whether you have prediabetes.”

If you test positive, Dr. Chalisa sees it as an opportunity to improve your health. “Progression from pre-diabetes to diabetes isn’t inevitable,” she explained. “Healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent both pre-diabetes and the progression to diabetes.”

Healthy lifestyle changes include performing daily physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, both of which can bring your blood glucose level back to normal. “Eat balanced meals with small portions, and cut back on added sugars and soda,” said Dr. Chalisa. “Exercise for 30-60 minutes every day, and try to get to, and maintain, a healthy weight. Losing just 10% of your body weight significantly decreases your risk of developing pre-diabetes and diabetes.”

Natalie Malinowski is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

She plans to join the army after graduation, and then attend Illinois State University where she will study to become a physical education teacher.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Honors and Activities Natalie is the daughter of Pat and Becky Malinowski.

As a YHS athlete, she has spent the past four years as part of the school’s volleyball and basketball teams.

In addition to her athletic endeavors, Natalie also prides herself on her academics. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rho Kappa National History Honor Society.

Outside the classroom and off the court, Natalie can be seen participating in Student Council, where she is a four-year-member, as well as serving as a Student Ambassador and co-president of the YHS Educator’s Rising Club. She volunteers at the Yorkville Public Library, mows the grass for senior citizens in her neighborhood, and works part-time as a birthday hostess at the local bowling alley.

“I feel what I have gained from being involved in these activities is a strong work ethic,” she said of her pursuits. “The biggest thing I have gained is to be able to prioritize what needs to be done and then go out there and give it 110 percent.”

This year, Natalie attended the US Marine Corp Sumer Leadership and Character Development Academy in Virginia where her passion for the military blossomed, she said.

The group engaged in leadership and problem-solving activities that Natalie said she will apply to situations today and in the future.

“This Marine Camp led me to be absolutely sure that serving my country will be part of my future,” Natalie said. “At the end of my schooling, I hope I can instill in the next generation that hard work, keeping physically fit and willingness to try something outside their comfort zone will make them all successful.”

Yorkville Varsity: The Foxes (1-2) picked up a win over DeKalb on Nov. 14, winning 3,099-2,965 in a key Northern Illinois Big 12 match. The IMSA/Yorkville co-op swim team had a strong outing at the Metea Valley Sectional last Saturday to send two events on to the state finals in Evanston.

The 200-free relay team of Linnea Lee-Brown, Brooke Jensen, Colleen O’Connor and Polina Bondarenko set a new school record with an eighth-place finish in 1:37.32. Lee-Brown is also an individual qualifier in the 50 free.

“The girls did amazing at sectionals,” coach Kevin Satler said. “The day started off with both divers placing higher than we have placed at sectionals as long as I have been coaching here. The outstanding performances

continued through the entire meet.

Every event dropped a significant amount of time from there fasted this season and all but a few swims were personal records.”

The 200 medley relay set a new school record of 1:50.41 behind the efforts of Lee-Brown, O’Connor, Lindy Hong and Claire Wang.

Brooke Jensen set a new school record in the 200 free with her finish in 1:56.18, and did it again in the 100 free when she finished in 53.59 seconds.

O’Connor set a new mark in the 200 IM at 2:21.21 and set a new school record in the 100 breaststroke at 1:09.05. The 400 free relay team of Wang, Hong, Jensen and Bondarenko finished with a new school record time of 3:37.65.

NORSEMEN EDGE REAPERS Mitchell surrounded by veteran group of juniors

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Don’t be fooled by the youth on the Newark girls basketball roster.

The Norsemen have just one senior in their lineup, but three-time Little Ten All-Conference selection Jasmine Mitchell is supported by a strong junior class and talented youth.

“I will be expecting Jasmine Mitchell to lead our team in both scoring and rebounding this season. She has worked hard in the off season to improve her conditioning and I’m excited to see how that translates onto the floor this season,” said Newark coach Barb Scott, who returns for her second season.

Newark graduated four seniors from a team that won 18 games, but return a veteran group of juniors who saw invaluable playing time last year. Juniors Alyssa Schofield, Riane Tomsa, Reegan Skelton and Becca Sweeney along with sophomore Alyssa Gittins are back from last year’s team and will be joined by freshman point guard Meggie Scott while juniors Caeley Larson and Meghan Lehmann complete Newark’s nine-player roster.

“Our senior class last year was very strong, mentally and physically. I am looking to Jasmine Mitchell and several other returning juniors to start filling those leadership roles,” Scott said.

“Riane Tomsa and Alyssa Schofield both saw significant varsity time last season and will be solid guards to play alongside with our freshmen point guard, Meggie Scott. We will also be expecting strong rebounding from Becca Sweeney, Reegan Skelton and Alyssa Gittins.

We are excited to have Caeley Larson join the team this year, as well as Meghan Lehmann.”

Newark (1-0) opened the season on Monday in the Tim Humes Breakout Tournament in Somonauk where the Norsemen will spend four nights this week facing Plano, Wheaton Academy, Aurora Central Catholic and Hinckley-Big Rock.

On Nov. 22, Newark will host Aurora Christian before the LTC season begins at Earlville-Leland on Nov. 28. Newark will play in the Ottawa Holiday Tournament Dec. 17-23, and other non-conference games this season include Ottawa Marquette, Annawan, Seneca, Woodstock North and Harvest Christian.

“We had a good off season and the girls have been working hard in practice every day. They all have excellent attitudes and are ready to get the season going,” Scott said. “We are a very young team with a lot of talent and desire. We will be a work in progress for a while, and I’m excited to see how the pieces all fit together as the season progresses.”

Newark 59, Plano 58: On Monday, the Norsemen used an 18-point fourth quarter to knock off the Reapers. Plano had a strong start, scoring 18 points in the first quarter before taking a 33-30 lead at halftime. Mitchell led Newark with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Meggie Scott scored 14 points with six assists and six rebounds. Tomsa added 10 points and Sweeney had 10 rebounds.

“It was an incredible game and I was so proud of the way my girls battled for the first game of the season,” Scott said.
