CITY OF YORKVILLE

Home rule fails; positions eliminated

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville voters agreed to eliminate both the elected clerk and treasurer positions, but rejected giving the city home rule powers in three referendums Tuesday.

Residents voted in favor of eliminating the city clerk position with 6,103 yes votes 1,822 no votes, and cast 5,949 votes in favor of eliminating the city treasurer position and 1,951 against doing so.

In addition, 4,166 residents voted against giving the city home rule powers, compared to 3,406 who voted in fa-

vor of it.

City officials had hoped that being a home rule municipality would give them more local control; a city can also become home rule once they reach 25,000 in population.

The city’s former treasurer, William Powell, resigned in 2013, two years after winning a third term to the position, and promptly supported eliminating the elected position.

He then ran again, in 2015, and in his campaign vowed to resign immediately. He did resign, and has continued to support eliminating the position.

The treasurer’s duties have been performed since 2013 by the city’s fi-

nance director, Rob Fredrickson.

City Clerk Beth Warren was elected to her second four-year term in 2015.

If the clerk position is eliminated, it wouldn’t take effect until the end of Warren’s current term.

The city’s deputy clerk would then take over the duties of the elected clerk, according to City Administrator Bart Olson.

“The clerk and treasurer questions are both cost-cutting moves, but with practical implications on the treasurer since it’s a vacant position,” Olson said. “If both positions were abolished, the city would save between $7,000 and $10,000 annually.”

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board will see some new faces when they are sworn in Dec. 5, although two incumbents kept their seats on the board following Tuesday’s election.

There were a total of five seats up on the board, including two spots in District 1 and three spots in District 2.

County Board Chairman John Shaw, a Republican from Yorkville representing District 1, did not run for another term.

In District 2, board member Jeff Wehrli, a Republican, did not run for another term, and board member Dan Koukol was defeated in the Republican

Board members John Purcell of Yorkville, a Republican representing District 1, and Elizabeth Flowers of Montgomery, a Democrat representing District 2, both kept their seats on the board.

Purcell was the highest vote-getter in District 1 with 13,078 votes cast,

while Democrat Audra Hendrix of Yorkville received 11,019 votes.

The pair defeated Republican Jerry Bannister of Oswego, who received 10,625 votes.

Tony Giles For the three seats in District 2, newcomer Matt Kellogg of Yorkville, a Republican, was the top vote-getter, with 11,981 ballots cast, while Flowers received 10,659 votes and Republican Tony Giles of Oswego received 10,145 votes. The trio defeated Republican Diane Selmer of Oswego, who received 9,712 votes, and Democrat Kristine Heiman of Oswego, who received 8,361 votes.

Incumbent Rezin beats challenger a 2nd time

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com For the second time, incumbent state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, defeated Democrat Christine Benson of Ottawa Tuesday in a race for the 38th Senate District, with most of the precincts reporting.

Rezin defeated Benson in 2012, gaining 54 percent of the vote. Tuesday evening, Rezin defeated Benson again, this time with 58 percent of the

vote.

Rezin had 44,891 votes to Benson’s 32,679 votes with 17 precincts outstanding in LaSalle County late Tuesday evening. There were 201 Sue Rezin out of 218 total precincts reporting in the district.

The 38th Senate District includes portions of Kendall, Grundy, Putnam, LaSalle, Livingston, Bureau and Will counties.

Following the results Tuesday evening, Rezin thanked the voters of the district for giving her another term.

“It is my honor to serve the 38th District in the Illinois Senate and I want to thank the voters for giving me the opportunity to keep fighting for them in Springfield,” she said. “My opponent very graciously called me earlier this evening, and I want to thank her for a race well run. Finally, I want to thank my family for their unconditional love and support.”

Hultgren retains House seat Oberweis

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Unofficial vote totals indicate that incumbent Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, maintained his seat as congressional representative in Illinois’ 14th district.

Hultgren had about 141,929 unofficial votes compared with Democratic challenger Jim Walz’s 98,143.

Votes were counted from counties the district covers including McHenry, Lake, Will, Kane, DeKalb and Kendall counties.

Hultgren has held the seat as representative for Illinois’ 14th Congressional District since 2011 and said he puts small families and businesses first. He also wants to prioritize in- Rep. Randy frastructure and trans- Hultgren portation. If elected he said he would continue to fight for jobs, families and limited government.

“I have consistently said ‘no’ to policies that grow government and burden our children with more debt,” he

said in a previous statement to Shaw Media. “I believe we all agree on 80 percent of the issues facing the nation.

Building relationships and working on common goals can help us address the other 20 percent.”

The 14th Congressional District covers most of Kendall County, including Yorkville, Plano, and large portions of Oswego and Montgomery.

Walz ran on a platform of representation for middle and working class people with a focus on wage raises and preserving social services such as Social Security and Medicare.

50th ILLINOIS HOUSE DISTRICT

Wheeler re-elected to second term Incumbent State Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, won re-election to a second term from the 50th District in the General Assembly Tuesday by a wide margin.

For the second time, voters chose Wheeler over former Yorkville Mayor Valeria Burd, a Democrat. Wheeler first won election to the General Assembly in 2014 by defeating Burd.

Vote totals late Tuesday showed Wheeler with 30,793 to 19,821 for Burd.

A graduate of Oswego High School and the University of Illinois where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, Wheeler is the owner of Responsive Network Service, a computer consulting business, for the past 23 years.

Responding to a Record Newspaper questionnaire prior to the elec-

tion, Wheeler noted that Governor Bruce Rauner had reduced the size of his controversial turnaround agenda from “four items to just five. Those five items are: term limits, redistricting reform, work comp reform, property tax freeze, and pension reform. I support all Keith five and look forward Wheeler to bringing about these solutions to help Illinois become a more fair and competitive state.”

When asked what the state can do to reduce its massive deficit, Wheeler said, “This is one of my biggest frustrations about my time in Springfield. As a member of the House Appropriations General Services Committee, I expected that we would work through the

budget in tremendous detail looking for ways to make cuts to balance the budget. Those discussions never took place. Instead, a budget was produced by the House Democrats and the appropriations committees were effectively disbanded. I am open to making across the board cuts if we can’t actually negotiate specific cuts that will start to close the budget gap.”

Asked what his priorities beyond budget and tax issues if re-elected, Wheeler said, “While there are several infrastructure items that will provide value to the constituents of the 50th District (Full interchange at Route 47 and I-88, Metra extension to Kendall County, intersection improvements at Orchard Road and Route 30, etc.), I don’t expect to see the necessary financial support from the state until we get past the budget impasse.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com Incumbent Republican state Sen. Jim Oberweis won re-election over his Democratic opponent, Corinne Pierog, with 34,252 votes to her 26,072 votes, in unofficial results Nov. 8.

Oberweis, of Sugar Grove, and Pierog, of St. Charles, previously vied to represent the 25th District in 2013 with Oberweis winning.

“I’m very honored that the voters chose to send me down to Jim Springfield for another Oberweis four years,” Oberweis said. “I hope that I can help to turn our state around and get our economy moving forward again. The last four years have been pretty frustrating. It’s looking like Republicans are going to pick up a few Senate and House seats, which hopefully will send a message to Mr. Madigan that it’s time to be reasonable.”

Oberweis was referring to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Pierog said she thought her campaign and supporters “did great.”

“There was a large support from committed voters and committed volunteers, excited they could have a candidate they could support,” Pierog said.

“The voters all came out; we had a good strong vote,” Pierog said. “We tried very, very hard. We worked hard.

Let’s not do this kind of political season again There is a great scene at the end of the 2008 Coen Brothers black comedy “Burn After Reading” where a CIA analyst named Palmer sums up an extremely twisted story that serves as the film’s plot to his boss and the boss asks, “Well, what do we learn?”

Palmer responds, “I don’t know, sir.”

The boss then slumps back in his desk, breaths a heavy sign, and says, “I don’t know ... either. I guess we learned not to do it again.”

Those words sum up our view of campaign 2016 and Tuesday’s election.

We hope that we, as a nation, don’t let another divisive campaign/election season happen like this again.

More than a year of negative campaigning on both sides – fueled by millions and millions of dollars in special-interest money – has served to further fracture our nation’s political fault lines and will now make it even more difficult for our new president,

Congress and the Illinois General Assembly to find the compromises that are necessary to move our state and nation forward. It’s an extremely distressing situation.

History, however, shows that we have endured several highly contentious national political seasons before and managed, in good time, to move collectively forward to something better.

As Winston Churchill once said,

“A pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” We will continue to see the opportunities ahead if we as citizens and our elected officials are willing to end the political divisiveness and work towards compromise. In the meantime, we hope our newly elected officials and their respective parties have learned not to do this kind of political season again.

Capt. Haynes survived Civil War, but not its aftermath Down at the Cowdrey Cemetery, just off Ill. Route 71 between Oswego and Yorkville, you’ll discover the once-towering marker for Andrew Jackson Haynes, and wonder at the mystery of the monument’s inscription.

The Haynes monument is a twopart obelisk (the top of which has since fallen from its base) memorializing Haynes, who was murdered in 1869 in Arkansas.

According to the epitaph on the monument: “Capt. A. J. Haynes, Assassinated by Collyer while in defence of his country at Marion, Ark, July 15 1869, Aged 31 yrs 1 m 5 dys, O Mother do not weep though You never see again thy noblemanly Son who in a Capt. A. J. distant land was slain.” Haynes That epitaph has fascinated me ever since I first saw it more than 40 years ago. As we recognize the service of our veterans this month, it might be a good time to look into how a young Kendall County man came to be shot dead in Arkansas.

When the Civil War broke out, Haynes decided to enlist in Company C, 4th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment.

The 4th Illinois Cavalry was recruited by Democratic political heavyweight T. Lyle Dickey. Dickey, an Ottawa lawyer and judge, was a Mexican War veteran, where he had served as a captain of cavalry, meaning he had military experience – along with his considerable political pull.

As a result, he was authorized by the U.S. Army to recruit a federal cavalry regiment. Republican Illinois Gov. Richard Yates, however, com-

Company C was recruited mostly in Kendall County, with the pitch to enlist made by Capt. Charles Townsend and Lt. Asher B. Hall. Both men were well-known Oswego-area residents, Townsend a wealthy farmer and Hall a merchant, and both came from substantial Kendall County families.

In his enlistment papers, Haynes, an Oswego tinsmith by trade, was described as black-haired and blue-eyed, standing almost two inches over six feet. Enlisting as a private, Haynes served with the 4th though some pretty heavy campaigning in the western theater of the war with the Army of the Tennessee at Pea Ridge, Shiloh, Forts Henry and Donelson, and Vicksburg.

Late in the war, Haynes heard there was a chance at promotion with one of the new black regiments being formed.

On Feb. 18, 1864, he was discharged from the 4th Illinois Cavalry as a sergeant and then mustered in the same day as a captain in the brand new 1st Mississippi Cavalry (African Descent). A month later, the 1st Mississippi was converted to the 3rd U.S. Colored Cavalry Regiment.

During the Civil War, the Union was willing to recruit regiments among escaped slaves and free blacks, but there was a strong cultural pro-

hibition against black officers. Thus, officers in black regiments were almost uniformly white. When the 1st Mississippi was formed, the call went out for experienced horse soldiers, of which by then, Haynes was certainly one.

If Andrew Haynes expected his new post to be less rigorous than serving with the 4th Illinois, he was mistaken. By all accounts, he was an effective combat leader, receiving a commendation for his actions during the battle at Black River Bridge.

The 3rd USCC saw lots more hard campaigning, including the hunt for Jefferson Davis as he and his wife attempted, unsuccessfully, to flee the country at the end of the war.

The 3rd USCC was mustered out of U.S. service on Jan. 26, 1866, but Haynes decided to stay in the South to assist in reconstruction and was subsequently appointed as an officer in a black Arkansas militia unit. His reconstruction activities did not make friends among defeated rebel military officers and troops.

One of those with whom he had a dispute was a former rebel soldier and Ku Klux Klansman named Clarence Collier. On July 15, 1869, Collier, who already had a $500 price on his head for the murder of George J. Bethel, took his revenge by ambushing Haynes in downtown Marion, Arkansas, shooting him dead.

An article in the Aug. 5, 1869 Kendall County Record reported the incident: “…Clarence Collier, who had apparently been lying in wait for him [Haynes], came out of a grocery on the opposite corner of the street Haynes was leaving, and without a word of warning, drew a bead upon him with a double-barreled shotgun and fired. The charge took effect in

Captain Haynes’ left side. The assassin instantly discharged the contents of the second barrel into his back. The Captain fell upon his face a corpse.

But the vengeance of the brutal fiend was not satisfied. He advanced toward his prostrate victim and emptied his revolver into his body, riddling it with balls. Two lodged in his head.

The assassin coolly returned to the grocery whence he had issued to do his bloody work, received his coat, mounted a horse, evidently prepared for the occasion, and rode out of town undisturbed.”

Collier was just 23 when he pulled the triggers on his shotgun and emptied his revolver into Haynes.

Haynes’ body was brought back to Kendall County for burial, John Redmond Marshall wrote in the Aug. 5, 1869 Record: “The corpse of Andrew J. Haynes, who was murderously shot dead by one Collier, at Marion, Arkansas, arrived last Thursday and was buried next day in the Cemetery near Morgan’s.”

Collier was never arrested despite the public nature of Haynes’ murder, the authorities protesting they were unsure what had happened. According to at least one source, the case is still considered unsolved by Arkansas law enforcement officials.

You might think 1869 is an awful long time ago, but the poison of those divisive years of war and more war are still with us as yet another Veterans Day rolls around. As William Faulkner (who knew a thing or two about the South) so famously and so accurately phrased it: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

So let’s tear up Obamacare and tell everyone it will be replaced by letting insurance companies compete. These companies still need to make profits and the best way is to limit care and cater to healthy people.

Has anyone seen the huge rise in high deductible health plans offered by employers? Yes, they are cheaper and makes the rise in what companies are paying for health care look small in comparison to Obamacare premiums. It’s the small thing like a $6,500 yearly deductible for a single person or $13,000 for a family that might put folks on edge. But don’t fear, you will have a Health Savings account that comes out of your paycheck to soften the impact.

If you want competition, let a private option be in the mix. You don’t have to take it, it’s an option. You can always try the open market. No one over 65 is complaining about Obamacare premiums because they have that private option called Medicare. Very low income people can get Medicaid. But those too young or who make too much money have no option.

Imagine what that option would do to foster competition in the marketplace and it’s been time tested. Or we could just go back to the good old days of the haves and the have nots.

Newark school tax increase OK’d SHAW MEDIA Voters in the Newark Grade School District 66 said “Yes” Tuesday to a request from the school district board to a 0.7 percent increase in the district’s limiting rate on property taxes.

Voters approved the referendum by a margin of 212 votes: 736 “Yes” votes to 524 “No” votes in the district’s five

The district sought passage of the referendum to maintain district programs.

According to the ballot question, passage of the referendum would mean that the owner of a residence in the district with a fair market value of $100,000 will see an increase of $233 on the school district portion of their property tax bill.

We need to do more things on a private basis – and many groups are doing that.”

Oberweis said once the state’s economy gets moving faster, it will generate more tax revenue so the state can afford to pay for more programs.

“Mr. Madigan has to come around to compromise on common sense reforms,” Oberweis said. “It’s critical.

Judge rules Hastert lawsuit can proceed Jivin for Jaxon SHAW MEDIA A judge has ruled that a lawsuit filed by a sexual abuse victim against former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert can go forward, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Kendall County Judge Robert Pilmer said the plaintiff established what was needed to allege “a claim for contract,” the AP said.

Attorneys for Hastert had asked Pilmer to dismiss the lawsuit, which was brought in April by a man who

contends Hastert owes him $1.8 million of the $3.5 million promised to keep the man silent, according to the AP. The 74-year-old Illinois Republican is serving a 15-month prison sentence for violating banking laws in trying to silence the victim, who says he was Dennis abused when Hastert was a wrestling Hastert coach at Yorkville High School decades ago, the AP reported. The man isn’t identified in court documents.

Rebecca Katula is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

She plans to attend college at Columbia College, Cleveland Institute of Art or Ringling School of Art and Design where she will study Animation and Design Media.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Rebecca Katula is the daughter of Garrett and Deborah Katula.

Besides maintaining a weighted G.P.A. of 4.3, Rebecca is heavily involved in art and design projects at school.

Inside YHS you can spot Rebecca’s art work on permanent display in the library, as well as on a large mural she painted at the school. She is part of the school’s Art Club and summer Art Program, but has sought numerous opportunities to further her love of art outside the school environment.

Rebecca participated in a 4-day CTN Animation Expo in 2015, and took a 2-week intensive summer pre-college program to learn animation and stop motion film art techniques at the Cleveland Institute of Art this year. She also takes classes at the Naperville Art League.

In addition to her artistic talents, Rebecca is an accomplished violinist who plays with the Yorkville High School orchestra. She also plays a role as a YHS Student Ambassador.

When she’s not busy doing school work or furthering her future career, Rebecca can be found volunteering. She is the founder of Yorkville Cares 4 Kids, which has provided more than $80,000 in lost and found clothing to Kendall County Food Pantry since it’s 2010 inception. She also has volunteered with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Feed My Starving Children.

“I do believe art and the projects I have worked on do enrich our school and community,” she said. “However, my participation in the Yorkville Cares 4 Kids program has probably had the most direct impact on my school and community.”

That said, she attributed all of her high school experiences to fostering her passion for the arts.

“Everything I have done up until now has been invaluable and absolutely crucial for both of my future educational pursuits,” she said. “...My experiences not only helped me to better understand the art world I was going into and develop my work, but also taught me how to work with other people, a lesson invaluable within the field I aspire to go into.”

A student can learn so much from the comfort of their desk in class, and teachers can provide inspired learning by introducing real world scenarios into their teaching, but imagine if students could learn outside of the classroom in the same real work environments that they’re interested in pursuing.

Such an idea has been developed at Yorkville School District 115 as a proposed new course titled “Field Experiences” for juniors and seniors. It was explained in great detail during a Board of Education meeting on Oct. 24.

Yorkville High School Principal David Travis presented details of this program in a proposal to the Board of Education as an extension of the 2017-18 courses. Melissa Wojowski, Jeannine Pacetti, Emma McGuire and Jonathan Calder assisted in developing and submitting the proposal.

The board accepted it and students should be able to take advantage of such a beneficial program beginning next fall. Field Experiences will provide Yorkville students with the opportunity to prepare for career success through

personalized, realistic learning experience outside of the school itself.

According to the course description, “Students will gain valuable work experience in an area of their interest, create a network of contacts, and learn valuable, transferable, self-management, and job-related skills while earning school credit towards graduation.

This unique program allows for supervised field experience which will help students with post-secondary decision making and successful matriculation into students post-secondary experience.”

Travis explained how such a course would create opportunities for students and even cited research to provide further support. His research shows that 70 percent of companies say that high school students who complete their programs will likely land a college internship with said company and that 45 percent claim that high school internships would “very likely” or “completely likely” turn into a full-time job at the company.

Police: Stabbing was murder-suicide

DUI arrest Yorkville police arrested Jakayla A. Phillips, 25, of the 500 block of Easton Lane, Romeoville, Nov. 5 at 6:01 a.m. on Ill. Route 71 south of West Highpoint Road. Police say Phillips was driving southbound on Route 71 and drove off the road and into a ditch. Phillips was cited for following too closely and improper lane usage in addition to being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Glass door broken A homeowner on Emerald Lane reported to the police Nov. 5 that the outside pane of a double-pane glass door had been broken overnight. The cause of the damage was unknown.

The door was locked and was located in the basement of the house.

Vehicle shot with BB gun Police responded to a report of an unknown person or persons damaging a vehicle with what appeared to be a BB gun near the intersection of Orchard Street and Crimson Lane.

Stolen cigarettes Yorkville police arrested Teresa Anderson of the 1200 block of Marketplace Drive, Yorkville, at a business in the 500 block of South Bridge Street. Police say Anderson was caught on camera stealing two packs of cigarettes at her place of employment. She was charged with theft.

Police say Kurt D. Jaeger, 48, stabbed Nancy Buhle Weinstein, 55, multiple times before stabbing himself.

The Kendall County Coroner’s Office conducted autopsies on Sunday, police said.

According to a statement issued by Montgomery Police Chief Daniel Meyers, police were summoned to a residence in the 2000 block of Kate Court at 9:29 p.m. Friday eve-

ning for a possible death investigation.

Upon arrival, police said officers found a 48-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds.

Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said their investigators have determined the pair lived at the residence and were married.

Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services personnel were contacted to process the scene, according to police. Kendall County Coroner’s Office personnel removed the bodies from the home, police said.

Kate Court is located along the south side of Route 30, west of Orchard Road in the Kendall County portion of the village.

BRIEF Police: Jewelry thieves posed as medical workers in Boulder Hill

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information in reference to a theft of jewelry on Oct. 18 at approximately 4 p.m. in the 0-100 block of Circle Drive West, in Boulder Hill.

Police said two females posed as medical workers and gained access to the residence.

The pair were last seen departing the area in a

dark-colored, smaller SUV. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office report number is 2016-3324. Anyone with information on this or other crimes is urged to call Kendall County Crime Stoppers at 630-553-5999.

Callers remain anonymous and are eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of the offenders.

Arrested for retail theft, warrant Yorkville police arrested Daniel Fitzpatrick, 22, of the 100 block of Rickard Drive, Oswego, on Nov. 2. Police were called to the 900 block of Erica Lane for a report of a retail theft in progress. When police arrived, they discovered Fitzpatrick had a valid Kendall County warrant.

Fitzpatrick fled the scene on foot and was later apprehended. Fitzgerald was arrested for resisting arrest, theft, and the warrant. All property was recovered.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Two injured, one cited Teresa M. Francouer, 55, and Steven M. Francouer, 60, both of the 3800 block of Plymouth Drive, Edwardsville, were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 71 at Millbrook Road in Fox Township Nov. 6 at 1:59 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. The Francouers were transported to an area hospital, police said. The accident occurred when a vehicle driven by Misty Woods, 31, of the 1400 block of North Sedgwick Street, Chicago, lost a tire and it struck the Francouers’ vehicle. Woods was cited for driving on a suspended license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, police said.

Minor injuries in crash A Yorkville resident, Harold Eugene Yates, 62, of the 1000 block of North Bridge Street, received minor injuries when the vehicle he was driving was involved in a crash on Route 52 and Grove Road in Seward Township Nov. 1 at 6:06 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said Yates was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Tooth loss affects your health, your self esteem and can even your lifespan.

Dental implants not only stop bone loss, but they make talking and eating as easy as using natural teeth.

An implant is a small, titanium screw-shaped post, permanently anchored in the jawbone, that takes the place of the tooth’s roots. A crown is placed over the implant. The procedure is done in the dentist’s office and is no more uncomfortable, and even less so, than, other dental procedures.

For those who wear dentures, the shrinking is even worse because dentures put pressure on the gums, accelerating shrinking, even more so if you wear them 24 hours a day. This means that over time the dentures will not fit as well as they did at first and the ability to bite and chew are dramatically lessened. Statistics show a 25 percent bone loss after just one year of wearing dentures. Even more dramatic, after only three years, bone loss reaches a whopping 60 percent.

The result is artificial teeth that look and function like real teeth, without the fear of falling out as so often happens with dentures. They require no adhesive and care of dental implants is the same as for your natural teeth. Dental implants also stabilize and strengthen surrounding bone, the opposite of dentures, which speed up bone loss.

Cross Lutheran School in Yorkville held its annual walkathon fundraising event on Sept. 30.

There were 252 students who participated and together they walked or ran for a total of 1,842 miles in just two hours. This event raised $22,398 for the school.

Middle school parents’ forum to cover cyberbullying KENDALL COUNTY RECORD District 115 announced that District 115 Student Services has scheduled Dr. Dorothy Espelage to present a forum on cyberbullying for parents at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 in the Yorkville Middle School Auditorium.

Considered to be the nation’s leading researcher on the topic of bullying, Espelage will provide an engaging discussion for parents regarding bullying in general and the newest intersection of bullying and social media.

This discussion will include an overview regarding the prevalence of bullying, the latest medium for such behavior (cyberbullying), and active strategies for all parents to monitor and reduce the likelihood of such peer interactions.

This free presentation is geared toward parents of students in grades 5-12.

District 115 Teacher on Special Assignment Jim Wolf trained teachers along with Blair Haake’s sixth-grade math students on how to properly navigate through the use of their Chromebooks for teaching and learning.

The teachers piloting this initiative at Yorkville Intermediate School continue to research the best ways to use this technology for extended student learning opportunities.

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Sycamore Kickoff Invitational Bowling Tournament gave Yorkville coach Alvin Lewis early insight into where the boys’ team was starting the season after returning its entire 2016 regional lineup.

Yorkville finished with a 5,644 for seventh place overall, as junior Michael Nape Jr. led the Foxes with a 1,236 pin total.

“We really use the first one to see where we need to go from here,” Lewis said. “Through the front half we had three bowlers with a 200-plus average.

Kyle Krumme, an All-Conference bowler with Nape, and Evan Jaros will lead the Foxes as the lone seniors, and junior Zach Bianchi – a 2016 sectional qualifier – also returns in addition to juniors Nick Campos, Alex Engelken and Dante Gashi. Junior Lukas Spaniol and sophomores Evan Bender, Hunter Benesh, Matthew Lewan, Jackson Nance and Zack Nauman round out the 13-member roster.

“Four of our six varsity kids are starting their third year on varsity so there’s a lot of experience,” Lewis said.

“We’re a very sophomore-heavy team, so we have a bright future. Kyle and Evan are our senior leaders and understand the right way to do things.

Yorkville is the defending Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament champion after winning the first title in program history last winter. Cumulative season points left Sycamore with the NIB12 league championship and Yorkville placed second. Yorkville capped the 2015-16 regular season at 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference in dual action.

Yorkville opened its home schedule at Yorkville Bowl on Tuesday and fell to Sycamore in the NIB12 opener, 3,8943,477.

Top scores for the Foxes were turned in by Nape (646), Benesh (618) and Jaros (602).

Yorkville closes out the busy opening week at Plainfield East before facing DeKalb, Rochelle and LaSalle-Peru next week. The next tournament test arrives with the Rockford Guilford Tournament on Nov. 19. Lewis also added three competitive opponents to the schedule this winter, facing Plainfield South (Dec. 1) and Lockport (Dec. 8), and Minooka at a date to be determined.

“We’ve added three non-conference meets and all three are against teams that made it out of our regional last year. Two of them were at state and one of them was a top-five finisher in state, so it’s a very tough schedule,” Lewis said. “I believe it’ll prepare us for where we want to go.”

The Yorkville boys’ cross country team graduated four runners from its 2015 Class 2A third-place state team before moving up to the largest Class 3A division this fall.

Despite the hurdles this season, the Foxes cleared them to make a 10th consecutive state appearance last Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria. Yorkville closed the season with a 24th-place finish.

“We’ve had a very good boys’ program and I know 24th place sounds not up to par over the last couple of years, but this is the fifth-best team that we’ve ever had at Yorkville – and that says something,” Yorkville coach Chris Muth said. “A team that lost so many seniors last year had made so many advancements over the last three, four, five months. That’s a pretty great accomplishment for them.

SETTING NEW PRECEDENT Foxes capture second place with two All-State runners in Peoria

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Ranked as the third best girls cross country team in Illinois throughout much of the season, Yorkville knew it was in contention for an IHSA state trophy last Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

After five consecutive Class 2A state championships, Yorkville was unable to defend its crown after moving up to the largest Class 3A division this year due to a growing enrollment.

The Foxes rose to the challenge and exceeded those season rankings by capturing a state runner-up trophy.

“I knew our girls were running great races and that they were putting a lot of heart and effort into every stride, and I was so proud of what they accomplished,” Yorkville coach Chris Muth said. “I really didn’t care about the outcome as far as the place. I just knew we’d run our best race of the year at the perfect time and I couldn’t be prouder of the group.”

Naperville North won the state championship with 111 points, while Yorkville finished 19 points behind the Huskies.

After finishing second to Minooka at both the Normal Regional and Edwardsville Sectional, Yorkville edged out the defending Class 3A state champion Indians by four points. Downers Grove South was a distant fourth with 245 points.

“They were really excited. To put it in perspective, we’ve had eight consecutive years of being either second or first in state. This is the best group of them all,” Muth said. “I know we have a shot against any team on any given day, as long as we run our best race.

How it shook out was outstanding; I couldn’t be prouder of this group.”

Glenbard West teammates Katelynn Harte (16:31) and Lindsey Payne (16:34) captured the top two individual places while Minooka runners were the next two across the finish line. But Yorkville’s race strategy paid dividends as the pack moved up through the race, led by a pair of All-State finishes from sophomore Nicole Greyer and senior Alexis Grandys.

Chris Muth Yorkville girls cross country coach individuals can take more risks because they don’t have the team responsibility. Then there are kids who are running conservative races because they have teammates to back them up.

We talked throughout the week about what our best races were this year. As a group, we decided that running patient and consistent was the way to go.

“It’s nerve-wracking for me to watch it unfold because you see all these kids who are going out fast and fading back, and to watch them progress through the race was outstanding the way they were able to execute that,” Muth continued.

Greyer placed 13th overall with a time of 17:04 to lead the Foxes.

“She’s been putting up No. 1 runner workouts all year and she really was patient through the race and executed in the way she has in the past during her best races of the year,” Muth said.

“It’s her first big-time race and she re-

Grandys – a two-time All-State finisher in Class 2A – capped her high school cross country career with a third medal as she finished 25th overall with a time of 17:23.

Junior Alyssa Edwards was 31st overall in 17:27, senior Maddie Dearborn clocked in at 17:30 to take 35th and sophomore Olivia Borowiak was the fifth scoring runner, placing 53rd with a time of 17:50. Senior Julia Megazzini (18:38) and sophomore Victoria Crawford (19:13) also raced for Yorkville.

Despite completing the IHSA state series, the cross country season isn’t quite over for Yorkville. The Foxes will travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, on Nov. 13 for the Nike Midwest Regional.

“This season is not done. They’re going to run at Nike Regionals next weekend, and they’re super excited about it. They feel like they really have a shot to finish in a top four spot and have the opportunity to advance to Nike Nationals in Portland, Oregon,” Muth said. “They’re ready to accomplish even more.”
