On next Tuesday’s ballot, Yorkville voters will have a few questions to answer in the form of public referendums.

One of the referendum issues is whether residents want the city to have home rule powers. Municipalities automatically are considered home rule under state law once they reach a population of 25,000. The alternative route to becoming home rule is a referendum of the residents, asking them to declare the city home rule.

City Administrator Bart Olson said the City Council has talked about home rule government saving the city and its taxpayers money.

“Bond rating agencies take organizational financial status and flexibility into account when assigning bond ratings,” Olson said. “Simply having home rule status makes the city look better in the eyes of the agencies, and can result in a higher bond rating.

Higher bond ratings translate into more favorable interest rates when issuing new debt or refinancing. In

our most recent refinancing, we saved $62,000 more than we expected, in part because we had recently received a bond rating upgrade. On a larger debt issuance, higher ratings could save us much more.”

The city also could approve taxes, such as sales tax, gas tax, or hotel/ motel tax, that would be paid by those visiting the city, to take the burden off property taxes, officials have said.

A home rule form of government would give the city more local control, Mayor Gary Golinski has argued, and would allow the city to opt out of unfunded mandates required by state government.

According to the Illinois Municipal League, home rule local governments “have the ability to regulate on any subject that is of local concern provided the regulation thereof is not limited or prohibited by federal or state statute or constitutional provision.”

If a local government becomes home rule, whether through a referendum or via the population threshold, residents can place a referendum on the ballot to reverse the decision, going back to non-home rule. Voters in cities throughout the state, including Rockford, reversed their home rule status.

Future of clerk, treasurer positions

Also on the ballot are referendums asking to eliminate the elected city treasurer and city clerk positions.

The city’s former treasurer, William Powell, resigned in 2013, two years after winning a third term to the position, and promptly supported eliminating the elected position. He then ran again, in 2015, and in his campaign vowed to resign immediately.

He did resign, and has continued to support eliminating the position.

The treasurer’s duties have been performed since 2013 by the city’s finance director, Rob Fredrickson.

City Clerk Beth Warren was elected to her second four-year term in 2015.

If the clerk position is eliminated, it wouldn’t take effect until the end of Warren’s current term.

The city’s deputy clerk would then take over the duties of the elected clerk, according to Olson.

“The clerk and treasurer questions are both cost-cutting moves, but with practical implications on the treasurer since it’s a vacant position,” Olson said.

“If both positions were abolished, the city would save between $7,000 and $10,000 annually.”

School District 66 asking for more funding KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Newark Grade School District 66 Board of Education has placed a referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot asking for permission to increase the limiting rate on the district’s property taxes.

Since 1997, Newark Grade School has operated under the Property Tax Extension Law Limit (PTELL), sometimes called the tax cap. This means property taxes can increase by 5 percent or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) each year – whichever is the lesser. Since 1997, the highest property tax increase using CPI was 4.1 percent in 2007. (The following year it was 0.1 percent.) This year the CPI will be 0.7 percent.

Over the past 18 years, the allowable property tax increase has averaged 2.24 percent a year in PTELL districts such as Newark while non-PTELL districts levy for almost 5 percent annually.

Thus, the district’s allowable increase has been less than half that of neighboring districts for the past 18 years.

Currently Newark spends in total operational costs $8,889 a student with the state average being $12,521, according to a statement released by the district.

The statement continues: “Our Operating Tax Rate for last year was 2.26 per $100,000. The state average Operating Tax Rate is 3.52. The Operating Tax

Rate for Newark Grade School District 66 pays for 78 percent of everything in our district – from maintenance and teachers to curriculum, buses, etc.

While that sounds like a good amount of money generated through local dollars consider this – we rank 333 out of 375 grade school districts in Operating Tax Rate. This puts us in the bottom 11 percent of districts in the state for amount in tax levies and that makes the state believe that we are a wealthy district.

Wealthy districts receive less state and federal funding.”

The statement adds: “Newark Grade School District 66’s last property tax referendum was 1972. We are proposing a 0.7 percent increase in the Limiting Rate. (That number is point 7 percent – not 70%.) Why 0.7 percent? According to multiple sources, if we increase our Education Fund local taxes by that number, we will be seen as a not-sowealthy district. Again, this allows us state funding.”

The statement continues, “We want our learning community to know that we have been fiscally responsible while continuing to serve our students. Yearly, we have State Financial Consultant Mark Anderson look at our spending and offer ways that we can improve.

This year, Anderson stated, ‘(Newark Grade School District 66) is running as

efficiently as you possibly can.’ That is a statement of which we are proud. “ The statement concludes: “At Newark Grade School District 66 we believe we have the best to offer in school services at a highly competitive rate.

Our staff is dedicated and second to none. Our academics, athletics and social-emotional expectations are of the highest quality. Athletic programs, scholastic bowl and speech team have done well. We consistently score well on standardized tests and have never been on any of the state watch lists.”

A flier prepared by supporters of the referendum and obtained by the Record warns of potential program cuts if the referendum does not pass Tuesday. According to the flier, sports, co-curricular clubs, band, music, art/technology, physical education, the school lunch program and full-day kindergarten could all be cut.

The flier warns that if the cuts are not enough to maintain the district, the board can vote to dissolve the district, and students would be dispersed to neighboring districts “who all pay higher tax rates than the proposed increase tax rate. Not only would Newark CCSD 66 residents be losing schools and property value, [but] they would be paying even more to these other district where [their] children will attend.”

Appearing at the forum were U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, and his opponent, Democrat Jim Walz of Gurnee; State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, and opponent Corinne Pierog, a Democrat from St. Charles; State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, and her opponent, Democrat Christine Benson of Ottawa; State Rep. David Welter, R-Morris, and his opponent, Democrat Martha Shugart of Morris; and Democratic candidate Valerie Burd of Yorkville, who is running against state Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego. Wheeler was out of state and was unable to attend the forum.

During the forum, Burd said she was in favor of a progressive income tax, which she said will take the burden off the property tax payers.

“I don’t want our residents to have to move because they can’t afford this burden, and many of them are moving,” she said.

Burd said property taxes are one of the most inequitable taxes that residents face, and said she hears from residents about the property tax burden on the campaign trail.

“You hear from people over and over how horrible this is and why they’re leaving,” she said. “I can’t tell you how many people told me that they’re packed up and leaving or planning to leave to go to Tennessee, Arizona, New Mexico, somewhere where the taxes are a lot less.”

Burd said a progressive income tax would require an amendment to the state constitution, but that she’s talked with legislators in Springfield and that there could be ways around that

“There are ways around this until we get a constitutional amendment passed,” she said.

Shugart said that even though she is a Democrat, she is not supported

by House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, or the state party.

“I run a very independent campaign,” she said. “I am not supported

by Speaker Madigan, I’m not supported by the Illinois state Democratic Party.

You do not have a puppet, you have a leader who represents you here, sitting in front of you.”

Welter, who was appointed in July following the resignation of state Rep. John Anthony, also stressed his bipartisan bona fides, saying he was supported by Republicans and Democrats when he became the Grundy County Board chairman at the age of 23.

“I think that speaks volumes,” he said.

Both Welter and Shugart said they would support some kind of term limits for legislators.

“I definitely think it’s something

needed,” Welter said. “I don’t think it’s something we should agree on in concept. I think it’s something that you need to say yes or no, do you support or not, and I do.”

Shugart said she is not a “career politician.”

“I think eight years is a suitable amount of time,” she said. “You can accomplish a lot in eight years.”

During their portion of the forum, Oberweis and Pierog discussed the issue of increasing the minimum wage.

Oberweis said he was a sponsor of legislation that would have increased the minimum wage over a three-year period to $10 an hour for those age 26 and older. The age of 26 was chosen because that is the age at which people can stay on their parents’ health insurance plan via the Affordable Care Act. He said it was a “compromise” bill but that it was not supported by Democrats.

Pierog said most minimum wage jobs are held by young women who may be supporting a family.

“Living on minimum wage if you happen to be 18 or 19 with a child, you may not have a husband, is untenable,”

she said. “You cannot support a child living on minimum wage, and you may have two children. So it’s very important that a person who works, does an honest day’s job, they get an honest pay, and that pay is not determined by your age. Because, to me, that’s reverse age discrimination.”

During their portion of the forum, Rezin and Benson reflected on the best way to keep businesses from leaving Illinois and attracting new business.

Rezin said companies looking to move to a state look for stability.

“Do you have a budget? Do you spend within your means? Is your budget balanced?” she said. “Do you have unfunded liabilities, a lot of debt? Because companies know they will have to pay for it.”

Rezin said the other part of the equation is regulation.

“Half of my district is agriculture, which lives and dies by the EPA, and the other half of my district is an energy-producing district, with nuclear power plants and natural gas plants, and they still live and die by regulation,” she said.

Rezin said she sponsored legislation which streamlines the permitting process so businesses looking to invest in Illinois will get answers to their questions in a timely manner.

Benson also said the state needs stability to attract businesses. She said she is in favor of reducing costs and fees for small businesses, which she said are “onerous at times.”

“They’re looking to be able to grow their business, which in turn grows jobs for the state of Illinois,” she said.

During the 14th Congressional District portion of the forum, Hultgren and Walz voiced their opinions on the Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare.

Hultgren said he was in favor of some parts of the act, such as ensuring coverage for those with pre-existing conditions and allowing those 26

Have you voted early yet or are you planning to cast your ballot next Tuesday on election day? Here in Kendall County voters will find a relatively short ballot. At the top of the ballot is, of course, the race for President, followed by federal, state and county races.

Very unfortunately for Kendall County voters, the political powers that be in Springfield carved up the county into a very confusing maze of federal and state legislative districts back in 2010. The county now sits in two Congressional districts (the 11th

and 14th), four State Senate districts (the 25th, 38th, 42nd, and 49th), and four State House districts (the 50th, 75th, 84th and 97th). To further complicate matters, the boundaries for the two county board districts were redrawn in 2010.

If you are one of the many voters who may not be sure exactly which races you’ll be casting a ballot in, that information can be found on your voter registration card or by visiting the Illinois State Board of Elections voter registration look-up page at ova.elections.il.gov/RegistrationLookup.aspx.

The site also provides voters with the location of their polling place.

Sticky noodles? We’ve got the cure right here So, did you make it through Halloween trick-free?

We had our usual sparse costumed munchkins visit the Matile Manse front porch, which is to say hardly any at all.

Granted, there are no sidewalks and not many street lights down here in God’s Country, but when we were kids, we tried to visit the areas of Oswego where most kids didn’t go, on the theory (usually successful) that people who hadn’t had many trick-or-treaters would perhaps put two candy bars in our bags instead of closely rationing them to last all evening. Apparently, that strategy is no long operable.

On the other hand, we count ourselves lucky that we don’t have any outhouses for pranksters to tip over these days. Not sure why it caused so much hilarity, but tipping outhouses was a real laff riot back in the day.

With Halloween wrapped up, we’re now looking forward to Thanksgiving, the all-time best holiday since there’s no gifts to find or give, but rather just a day of being thankful, which is something more of us could profitably spend more time doing.

This year, we can also be extremely thankful that campaign season will have been over for almost a month and that the airwaves will have been free of campaign commercials that spend most of their time tearing down opponents rather than explaining how they plan to make things better.

Also on the theme of thankfulness, I am extremely thankful the right wing caucus in Congress has thus far been unable to entirely destroy the U.S. Postal Service, meaning our faithful mail carrier shows up out in front of

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile the Matile Manse six days a week and keeps us in contact with the rest of the world. Granted, there’s a considerable amount of junk mail mixed in with the useful stuff, but there are even some gems lurking amongst the junk.

Polk, William Henry Harrison, James A. Garfield, Franklin Pierce, and Zachary Taylor. My wife contends it’s all due to excessive cuddling during the windy month of March.

Looking to avoid gummy noodles, rice, macaroni and spaghetti when cooking? Simple. It says here all you have to do is add two teaspoons of cooking oil to the water before cooking.

FORUM To the Editor: In Washington, D.C., we have a national debt spiraling out of control, bearing down upon each of us, as well as our children and grandchildren. The federal government is forcing ever increasing costs of health care to be borne upon us the working people, while government bureaucrats and their crony corporatists are profiting. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) or Obamacare is a disaster and every lie used to sell this unconstitutional “bill of goods” to the American people, like “every family will save $2,500 per year” and “if you like your doctor and your plan you can keep it,” have been proven lies.

We need those who: will repeal Obamacare; are pro-life and understand that “All Lives Matter”; will put American citizens first and enforce our laws and secure the border; and will protect our “right to keep and bear arms” from the likes of Hillary Clinton, Bill Foster and the Illinois Democrats.

In Illinois jobs and people are leaving, long controlled by Democrat Speaker Mike Madigan and his cronies, it is a critical year to move forward with reform and fiscal sanity.

Keep our small schools

To the Editor: I’ve seen these signs all over Newark about voting for our school. I decided to make an informed decision and find out the facts. Here’s what I learned: Newark Grade School has such a low tax rate, in the bottom 10 percent, the state assumes it must be a rich district.

I guess they think we are surrounded by a bunch of industry. I only see corn fields out my window. But because of our low rate, the state gives Newark G.S. less state aid than the higher taxing districts.

So because Newark has gotten by on a very low tax rate the state rewards us by giving us less money.

The proposed tax increase would show the state that we are not rich and give us more state aid.

If the referendum fails, our Newark Grade School will be in serious trouble.

After a few more years of deficit spending, the state could dissolve the district and our grade school kids would get sent to surrounding districts. Then we will see a major increase in our tax bills.

The Yorkville tax rate is $6.75, Plano has a rate of $8.75. If you add the Newark G.S. proposed new rate with Newark High School, we will pay $5.47. So even with the new increase, we will still be far below the other area schools and we’ll get

Not many towns as small as Newark have their own schools. We are so lucky. Please, vote yes for the Newark District 66 so we can keep our small schools.

One critical reason

To the Editor: Donald Trump may have some attitude problems in the eyes of some people, and Hillary Clinton may have some legal problems in the eyes of some people, but there is one extremely critical reason that voting for Trump is the better idea: Supreme Court appointees.

Justices appointed by liberals such as Obama, and which will be continued

by Hillary, interpret the validity of laws based on current social ideology. Once the court has one more liberal justice, I’m pretty convinced that the process of dismantling that worn out, dried up, old piece of paper called the Constitution, will begin.

Remember, it is unconstitutional for the government to dictate that U.S. citizens purchase a certain product, but five justices said that the unconstitutional was constitutional and you now have Obamacare. Think about the possible future for your children and grandchildren.

To the Editor: When Yorkville voters go to the polls on Nov. 8 they will be see a referendum question on allowing Yorkville to become a home rule city. If this is approved by the voters, it will mean that the City of Yorkville will be given broad powers to increase your taxes, including property taxes, and impose more regulations on businesses. Home rule also allows the city to extend its debt out for several years, rather than trying to create a balanced budget with no debt. This debt will eventually need to be repaid, and stretching out the payments only shifts the burden of the debt onto others. I feel this is not a responsible way for governments to handle the taxpayers’ money.

As far as more regulations being placed on businesses in town, I fear this will cause more and more businesses to leave Yorkville. Lastly, on the issue of raising taxes, everyone knows our taxes are too high already. Many of our citizens are being taxed out of their homes and just cannot afford to live here anymore.

Enough is enough.

Man sentenced in church burglary

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Chicago man has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison after pleading guilty to stealing money from St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Oswego last winter.

Kendall County Judge Timothy J. McCann handed down the prison sentence to Kevin T. Johnson, 50, of the 4000 block of Malden Ave. in Chicago, on Wednesday, after Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of burglary. Johnson must also serve three years of mandatory supervised release as well as pay back $2,848 in restitution after his release, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Johnson was charged following an investigation into a Jan. 24 forced entry into the church at 551 Boulder Hill Pass.

“Officers learned that Johnson gained entry into the church by smashing through a window located on an entry door,” State’s Attorney Eric Weis wrote in a press release. “Johnson was captured on video by a surveillance camera entering locked desk drawers by using a screwdriver.

Johnson also entered a room which contained the collections from parishioners where he emptied envelopes containing cash and left envelopes containing checks.”

Johnson received the prison sentence as a Class X offender because of his prior criminal record, Weis said.

Dozens of high school students from across the 38th Senate District participated in a hands-on experience in public policy, state government, and leadership Oct. 27, as part of State Sen. Sue Rezin’s Youth Advisory Council.

“It’s incredibly uplifting to see so many young people engaged in public policy and enthusiastic about potentially dedicating their careers to it,” Rezin said. “Whether it’s on the local, state, or national level, we need good leaders. I hope this Youth Advisory Council reinforced their interest in this field, taught them about the importance of public policy, or demonstrated how to be an effective leader in any career they end up in.”

Rezin hosted the all-day Youth Advisory Council in Morris, with students selected by their principals and teachers from LaSalle-Peru Township High School, Morris Community High School, St. Bede Academy, Streator Township High School, Wilmington High School, Woodland High School, Putnam County High School, Reed

Custer High School, Newark High School, Hall High School and Serena High School.

Rezin spoke about how Illinois government works, shared her experiences at the Statehouse, and explained how public policy can shape the student’s everyday lives.

Students also spent time in small groups discussing and debating policy issues important to them and how any new proposal could face challenges or become successful legislation.

During these discussions, Sen. Rezin spent time with each small group, asking students questions about their proposed policy change and how they would advocate for their issue.

Students also heard from State.

Rep. David Welter, R-Morris; Tyler Diers, director of advocacy for the Illinois Chamber of Commerce; Cody Grandadam, president of Promier Products in Peru; and former University of St. Francis Head Basketball Coach Pat Sullivan. The panel shared stories of their experiences in the workforce and provided first-hand knowledge about public policy, leadership and how to be successful.

A fundraiser is set for coach Ryan Ferguson of Yorkville youth sports and his family at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, at Mike & Denise’s Pizza, 1760 N. Farnsworth Ave., in Aurora.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $10 for adults and $5 for children, cash only. Feel free to pre-purchase your tickets at the Mike & Denise’s locations in Yorkville or Aurora. Adult tickets will be entered in a door raffle.

The fundraiser is organized to help raise awareness of colorectal cancer and to provide assistance to coach Fer-

Coach Ferguson recently has been diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer and in August began radiation and chemotherapy to prepare for surgery in mid-October. Coach Ferguson has dedicated countless hours of his time to prepare our children, including his own, for success as athletes and in life. Coach Ferguson has been coaching sports for more than 15 years at Wheaton North High School; he also is a dean of students. Kaufman’s classic comedy, “You Can’t Take It With You,” will be presented on Nov. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m. in the YHS auditorium. Alexa Childs

Alexa Childs is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

She has not committed to a school just yet, but knows she would like to study physical therapy and go into the health care field.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview.

Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Alexa is the daughter of Kevin and Jennifer Childs and is a lifelong dancer.

She has spent the last eight years dancing competitively as well as the last four years on the fields and courts of Yorkville High School as the Pom Squad captain.

In addition to her time dancing, Alexa is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council and is a Student Ambassador. She is also a Principal/Student Advisor and a Senior Leader who said she strives for inclusion at school.

“As I practice being a good role model and an effective leader, my hope is that (other students) strive to reach their goals in all that they do,” she said.

Keeping in line with this motive, Alexa spends time as a Big Sister in the Big Brother/Big Sister program where she mentors a fourth-grade student. She said their mutual love of dance has helped them form a special bond.

“Discovering the joy in being of service to others, giving them my time, knowledge and experience for the betterment of their lives, has been the most meaningful reward I have taken from my experiences in my extracurricular involvement,” Alexa said.

She said she hopes these experiences will help her become a compassionate health care worker in the future.

BRIEFS All lanes to open soon on Rt. 71

The Oswego Police Department have issued an alert for motorists traveling in the construction zone on Ill. Route 71 in the village.

The Illinois Department of Transportation was set to activate the new traffic signals along Route 71 between Orchard and Wolf’s Crossing roads starting Wednesday, Nov. 2, weather permitting.

Police urge motorists to use extra caution as motorists become familiar with the new signals.

Police said IDOT officials are also anticipating removing the barrels on Route 71 in the construction zone and opening all lanes of traffic on the highway on our before Nov. 14.

Police said they will be placing a message board on the roadway starting Nov. 6 as a reminder to travel the posted speed limit. Police will be conducting extra patrols along Route 71 once the roadway fully opens. Specifically, police said they will be focusing on violations involving speed, seat belts and cellphone usage.

should anticipate a strong police presence enforcing safe driving in the school zone in front of Oswego High School due to a higher volume of inexperienced drivers that are in the area on a daily basis.

Route 71 between Wolf’s Crossing and Orchard/Minkler Road has been a construction for the past two years as contractors for IDOT have rebuilt and widened the highway from two to four lanes with center turn lanes and new traffic signals.

III. The property taxes extended for debt service and public building commission leases for 2015 were $431,000.67 The estimated property taxes to be levied for debt service and public building commission for 2016 are $445,000.00. This debt service is per 2002 voter approval by referendum.

Burlington store to locate in former Lowe’s space

Oswego officials confirmed Wednesday that Burlington, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is locating in a portion of the former Lowe’s Home Improvement store on Route 34.

Rod Zenner, the village’s community development director, said a lease has been signed for 44,000 square feet of space in the former store at 2404 Route 34. The Burlington store will be adjacent to the existing Hobby Lobby store, Zenner said.

Vehicle damaged A resident of the 800 block of South Bridge Street told Yorkville police someone scratched her vehicle on all sides and shattered her front windshield by striking it with a Headphones stolen large brick. ID theft reported Yorkville police said they received a report of an unknown person opening up an unauthorized credit card account in another person’s name at a business in the 700 block of Edward Lane Oct. 20 and then purchased over $900 merchandise.

Juvenile ticketed in crash Yorkville police ticketed a juvenile driver for failure to yield following a two vehicle crash at Countryside Parkway and Center Parkway Oct. 28 at 2:11 p.m. Police said the juvenile driver pulled in front of another vehicle, resulting in a t-bone crash. No one was hurt, according to police.

Reports crash County sheriff’s police took a report of a single-vehicle crash that occurred in the 8000 block of Caton Farm Road in Kendall Township Oct. 21 at 10:56 p.m. Police said the driver of the vehicle, Alexis M. Vehicle burglarized A vehicle parked at a residence in the 0-100 block of Hickory Lane in Oswego Township was burglarized late Oct. 24 or early Oct. 25, according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said several items were taken, but some were later recovered. Police said their investigation is continuing.

Under investigation County sheriff’s deputies took a report of a domestic battery that occurred Oct. 16 at 11 p.m. in the 6000 block of Whitetail Ridge Drive in Kendall Township. Police said the incident is under investigation.

Domestic battery arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Andre N. Harris, 23, of the 0-100 block of Afton Road, Boulder Hill, at his residence Oct. 21 on a charge of domestic battery. Police said Harris allegedly struck another individual during an argument.

Graffiti damage reported The Kendall County Forest Preserve District filed a criminal defacement report with the county sheriff’s office Oct. 28. Police said unknown persons defaced agency property in the 10000 block of Route 71 with racial and sexual graffiti.

Semis in hit-and-run County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a hit-and-run crash involving two semi trucks and trailers at O’Brien Road and Bell Road in Seward Township Oct. 28 at 1:05 a.m. Police said after being struck in the rear, one of the trucks fled south on O’Brien Road.

Oswego police seek information on shooting in downtown area

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Oswego police are seeking information on the shooting of a teenager near the village’s downtown early Saturday morning, and the Kendall County Crime Stoppers organization has offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest.

At 12:23 a.m. Saturday, Oswego police were called to the area of Tyler and Adams streets for a report of a disturbance and shots fired, according to a police press release.

“Officers responding to the location found a 16-yearold male juvenile on the ground with a gunshot wound,” according to the release. “Officers provided medical assistance to the juvenile until paramedics arrived.”

The juvenile from Aurora was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

“Oswego police learned that several individuals were in the area when a fight ensued,” according to the release.

“The juvenile was then shot at which time the suspects fled the scene. Oswego detectives are currently investigating the incident along with the Kendall County Criminal Intelligence Team. At this time there is no clear motive and no suspect information has been ascertained. It is believed that this is an isolated incident and that the juvenile may have gang related ties and may have been the intended target. “ Anyone who may have information regarding the incident is asked to call the Oswego Police Department at 630551-7300. Information may also be provided anonymously to Kendall County Crime Stoppers.

The Yorkville boys’ team secured its 10th consecutive trip to Peoria with a fifth-place finish in Edwardsville. Minooka won the sectional title by 10 points over O’Fallon, 89-99, while Edwardsville (103), Lincoln-Way East (111) and Yorkville (129) finished in the top five to advance.

“It’s been a team goal all year to make it to state for the boys. It’s something we’ve worked really hard for, and sometimes they’ve been underestimated and overshadowed at different meets, but they’re a really solid group of young men who work really hard,” Muth said.

Zack Price led the Foxes to the finish line, clocking in at 16:31 to place 11th, while Ben Summers was 15th overall in 16:37. Eric Naumann finished 32nd in 16:57, Patrick Black was 35th in 17:04 and Alexx Nauman rounded out the scoring in 36th place, crossing the line in 17:05. Alex Loos (17:10) and Matt Cox (17:38) also raced in Yorkville’s top seven.

“This is one of those special mo-

ments as a coach,” Muth said. “You don’t know if you’re going to make it or what the competition is going to do on a course you’ve never been on. They ran their hearts out. You could see it on their faces in the emotion they had once we were able to tell them they were state qualifiers.”

The 3A boys’ state race leaves the starting line at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Yorkville brought home four Class 2A state trophies in the past four years after working its way up from a 13thplace finish in 2009.

Nauman, the lone senior on the Foxes’ state roster, was part of the 2015 third-place team and the 2014 state championship team. This year, Yorkville makes its debut in Class 3A as an unranked team.

“We know we aren’t in contention on the boys’ side, but it’s all about setting the standard as high as we possibly can for next year,” Muth said. “[Nauman] has been a great leader this year, and whether he’s had good races or bad races, it’s been a pleasure to see him take control of this team and make sure his most consistent thing is being a role model and leader for the other young kids.”

Nine of the first 10 runners to the finish line were from either Minooka or Yorkville, as the two defending state champion girls’ cross country teams continued to battle it out in the postseason last Saturday at the Class 3A Edwardsville Sectional.

For the second week, Minooka – the defending Class 3A state champ – edged out 2015 Class 2A champion Yorkville, 24-36, for the sectional title.

Edwardsville was a distant third with 100 points, followed by state-qualifying teams O’Fallon and Lincoln-Way East.

Minooka senior Mackenzie Callahan set a new course record with her time of 17:55.

Yorkville’s runner-up sectional finish sends the Foxes back to Detweiller Park in Peoria on Saturday. The Foxes will make their 3A state debut at 1 p.m. after winning five straight 2A titles

and seven trophies in the past seven years.

“We’re excited to go back to Detweiller because it’s sort of like our home course,” Yorkville coach Chris Muth said. “Anything can happen at the state meet. It’s more about putting your team in a position to be competitive and be in the conversation. The girls are there, and they’re ready.

They’re excited, positive, and they’ve been looking forward to this meet all year long.”

Minooka took the top four individual places, and five of the next six finishes went to Yorkville. Nicole Greyer clocked in at 18:43 to place fifth, Alyssa Edwards was sixth in 18:52, Maddie Dearborn was seventh in 18:53 and Alexis Grandys was eighth in 19:11.

Olivia Borowiak placed 10th in 19:29, while Julia Megazzini (20:02) and Victoria Crawford (21:41) rounded out the team finishers.

“I would say that we were caught off guard with how difficult the Edwardsville course was. It was more difficult than I anticipated, but I thought the kids worked really hard,” Muth said.

“We weren’t expecting the extremeness of hills and length. It was a true

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The IMSA-Yorkville co-op girls swim team continued its dominance in the pool this fall with a fourth consecutive championship at the Northern Illinois Independent Conference invite.

The team scored 331.5 points on Oct. 29 to finish well ahead of runner-up Sterling (202.5) and Byron (178), which finished in the top three of the seven-team invite.

“The excitement was very high and they did a great job cheering for each other through out the entire meet,” coach Kevin Satler said. “This has been the fastest team we have ever brought to the NIC Invite and they are on track to do very well at sectionals.”

IMSA-Yorkville set two new meet records in the 200-yard free relay and 400-yard free relay. The 200 free relay of Linnea Lee-Brown, Brooke Jensen, Colleen O’Connor and Polina Bonderenko clocked in at 1:41.97, and the 400 free relay team of Claire Wang, Lindy Hong, Jensen and Bonderenko finished in 3:45.93. Both were first-place finishes.

The 200-yard medley relay team also posted a first-place time of 1:55.33 behind the efforts of Lee-Brown, O’Con-

nor, Hong and Wang.

Jensen won the 200 free in 2:02 and was third in the 100 free with a finish in 56.67 seconds. O’Connor won the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.34 and was third int he 100 breaststroke (1:11.31).

Maya Tiseth was second int he 500 free (5:39.09) and Catie Casanovas finished third (5:51.60). Haylie Wolf took third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.51).

On Oct. 15, the team also competed in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference race in Sterling and took first place, edging out runner-up DeKalb 314-261. Yorkville athletes Jensen and O’Connor earned All-Conference recognition. Jensen was also received the Most Valuable Swimmer Award.

“We had an outstanding meet at the NIB Conference Invite, for the first time we were able to outscore DeKalb,” Satler said.

“The sportsmanship was as good as we have had all season and they cheered very well for each other and the other teams. Brooke Jensen was awarded a trophy for the Meet MVP. All her hard work and dedication showed as she had outstanding performances in all of her events.”

The squad will now prepare for the 14-team Metea Valley Sectional on Nov. 12. Sectional event winners and any swimmer or relay that meets or surpasses the minimum qualifying standards will advance to the state meet Nov. 18-19 at Evanston Twp.

1A REGIONAL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: GARDNER-SOUTH WILMINGTON 2, NEWARK 0 (25-14, 25-21)

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Newark girls volleyball season fell short of a Class 1A postseason celebration, as the Norsemen fell in two sets to Gardner-South Wilmington in the Class 1A Illinois Lutheran Regional title game.

The Norsemen (21-14) lost 25-14, 25-21 to Gardner-South Wilmington, which advanced to Tuesday’s Flanagan-Cornell Sectional game against LaMoille.

Freshman Mattie Chapman had four kills and three blocks, Meggie Scott had eight digs and five service points and sophomore Rachel Testin made four kills. Alyssa Gittins had four blocks and two kills while Olivia Nelson also contributed with eight assists and three kills in the final game.

Newark picked up a postseason win on Oct. 25, defeating Illinois Lutheran 25-18, 2522 in the regional semifinal. Chapman had seven kills and one ace, Scott had eight digs and four aces and Testin made five kills.
