The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office has announced that it will have deputies visible throughout the county from patrol, the bicycle unit, community policing and auxiliary for Halloween on Monday, Oct. 31.

As part of providing a safe environment, the sheriff’s office said in a statement they want the public to be educated about the communities they will be in for trick-or-treating.

The sheriff’s office currently has 38 sex offenders registered.

Clerk: Early voting consistent with 2012

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County election officials say early voting numbers are, so far, similar to those in 2012.

County Clerk and Recorder Debbie Gillette told the County Board at its Oct. 18 meeting that there were 300 voters on the first day early voting was available at Oswego Village Hall.

“So that’s a lot,” she said.

Early voting began at the county’s

Voter Registration Office at the County Office Building in Yorkville on Sept. 29, started Oct. 14 in Oswego at Village Hall and started Oct. 17 in Plano at Plano City Hall.

County Board Chairman John Shaw said he’s noticed quite a bit of traffic going in and out of the Voter Registration Office.

“For those of us who frequent this building quite often, there’s been quite

a crowd going in there,” Shaw said.

As of Monday, the early voting figures were as follows at the various locations: County Office Building, 1,550; Oswego Village Hall, 1,891, and Plano City Hall, 98.

Gillette said the numbers appear to be consistent with those seen in the last presidential election in 2012.

That year, there were 4,037 early votes cast at Oswego Village Hall and 3,434 cast at the County Office Building.

Record Newspaper staffers earn NINA awards SHAW MEDIA Record Newspaper staff members won awards in the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association’s 2016 Newspaper Contest.

Competing in the non-daily newspaper contest category, John Etheredge, Record editor, won a first place award for Best Editorial for an editorial he wrote last April under the headline,

“Judge correct to press Hastert on extent of crimes.”

The editorial was published after a federal judge sentenced former U.S. Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert to 15 months in prison for illegally structuring bank transactions in an attempt to cover up his sexual abuse of members of the Yorkville High School wrestling team when he was a teacher and coach at the school from 1965 to

1980.

The contest judges described Etheredge’s editorial as “A clearly written stand on the heinous criminal behavior by a once-leading public servant finally come to judgment.”

All County Board candidates and Jacquie Purcell appeared at Tuesday evening’s forum. Weis sent a prepared written statement. Ingemunson was absent.

The District One candidates and District Two candidates were questioned separately during the forum.

During the District One portion of the forum, board candidates answered questions on forest preserve purchases of agricultural land, health department funding, and other issues. Candidates also stated how they would work as a team as a member of a 10-person board.

Hendrix said working with the other board members should involve some debate.

“A healthy team should involve debate, there should be some disagreement, because that’s what fosters the best results,” she said.

Purcell said being the chairman of the budget and finance committee, putting a budget together every year, means working with other people to get a budget passed.

“Every year, it doesn’t go exactly how you want it to,” he said. “I always

say, if I were king, I’d change this, this, this, this, this, and about 10 other things, but I’m not the king. You need to have 10 people on the board, have the majority of those 10 people agree on the budget. That’s at least six; most years we have 7, 8, or 10 people agree on the budget. There’s a little bit of give and take.”

Bannister said he had managed McDonald’s and Wendy’s restaurants when he was younger, and currently sits on the Kendall County CASA board, so he was familiar with being a leader and being part of a “pack.”

“If we disagree, it’s going to be left in that room,” he said. “We’re going to voice our opinions, we’re going to get mad at each other, and we’re going to walk out of there friends. Because regardless of the configuration of the board, we still have to work for the people of Kendall County.”

On the issue of the county using funds from the Health Department to reduce its budget deficit, which occurred last year, Bannister said the numbers are still in flux but that “a lot of people are going to be asked to contribute a lot of money back toward the budget.”

Candidates running for Kendall County Board got a chance to state their case to the voters during a candidate forum Tuesday evening at the Kendall County Historic Courthouse in downtown Yorkville.

The Kendall County Farm Bureau hosted the forum, and it was moderated and broadcast live by WSPY-FM. The general election is set for Nov. 8, although registered voters can currently early vote, and those not registered can participate in grace period registration and voting by visiting the county Voter Registration Office in Yorkville during regular business hours. According to the County Clerk’s Office, a resident must be at least 18 years old, have lived in their voting precinct for at least 30 days prior to the election day, and bring two forms of identification when they participate in grace period registration and voting.

Voters in County Board District One will need to choose two candidates out of the three running: Republican John Purcell of Yorkville, Republican Jerry Bannister of Oswego, and Democrat Audra Hendrix of Yorkville. Purcell is an incumbent and running for re-election to his seat. Current Board Chairman John Shaw, a Republican who lives in District One, is not running for re-election.

Voters in County Board District Two will need to choose three candidates out of the five running: Republican Matthew J. Kellogg of Yorkville, Republican Tony Giles of Oswego, Republican Diane Selmer of Oswego, Democrat Elizabeth Flowers of Montgomery, and Democrat Kristine Heiman of Oswego. Flowers is running for re-election and was unopposed in the Democratic primary in March, and incumbent board member Dan Koukol lost in the Republican primary. Incumbent Jeff Wehrli has decided not to run for re-election.

State’s Attorney Eric Weis, Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson, and Coroner candidate Jacquie Purcell, who won a contested Republican primary in March, are all unopposed for

Hendrix said the department is called upon at times to handle emergencies, as well as other topics such as heroin and tuberculosis.

“It would be unwise to hastily hobble the public health department, particularly because it’s you that they’re going to save should there be a problem,” she said.

Purcell said the county is looking at a $2.1 million deficit, and that a few years ago the county agreed to a fund balance policy where the county maintains enough funds for six to seven months of expenses. He said the health department’s fund balance grew this year, and they also get grants. He said the board asked them to contribute the $350,000 last year because of that.

“As long as I’m on the board, I’ll continue to suggest that’s the way we should get it,” he said. “We get contributions from other [departments], why should we not get contributions from the health department?”

One particular issue that was brought up was that of the Ellis House and Equestrian Center. Candidates offered up a variety of opinions on the facility, which is owned and operated by the county forest preserve district.

Bannister strongly suggested that he wants to shut the facility down.

“All those types of places are competing against their own government,” he said. “I can’t wait to try to close Ellis. I really can’t. And maybe we can take some of that money and open up some of these other lands so that people can enjoy them instead of subsidizing people’s weddings and hobbies.”

Giles suggested that Ellis be converted to a public-private partnership, where the county carries none of the liability but “still can make a profit.”

Selmer said “government should not be in a business like that,” and that there are other businesses in the area for horseback riding and wedding venues.

Flowers said she has been a supporter of Ellis, and that she is glad people from other counties come to use the facility.

“It’s a boon for us,” she said.

Social media a challenge for parents, schools The rumor about a Yorkville High School student intending to do harm to others at the school was unfounded according to school district officials, but that didn’t prevent it from spreading like a brush fire on social media. In response, school district officials issued a statement Oct. 13 in an effort to allay parent and community concerns. A portion of the statement read: “At no time was there a viable threat to the security of students or staff at YHS. An investigation by YHS administration and Yorkville police has shown these rumors to be completely false.”

Though the rumor was unfounded, the district arranged to have Yorkville police increase their presence at the school in an effort to “ensure students in

the building feel safe.”

The rumor concerning YHS came just days after school district officials had attempted to calm concerns about another unfounded social media rumor involving a clown at Yorkville Intermediate School.

Going forward, school district officials are asking parents for their assistance to “help stop these rumors from continuing so there is no further disruption to the school community.”

We hope district parents consider and take that suggestion very seriously. But at the same time we have no illusions that even the most vigilant parents can exercise total control over their children as they peruse social media on their smartphones, tablets and computers. We strongly and sadly suspect a bul-

ly in the hall or on the playground also is going to be a bully online. Kids who want to spread rumors or speak ill of or threaten others will do so and with social media they can do it now online “in real time.”

All this adds up to yet another daunting challenge for today’s parents and school officials. A few generations ago many parents and educators worried that kids were spending too much time in front of the TV watching what former FCC Chairman Newton Minnow aptly described in 1961 as a “vast wasteland” of banal programming. In retrospect, those concerns of watching too many returns of “The Brady Bunch” and “Combat” seem minor indeed to the challenges presented to today’s parents and educators in the form of social media.

It’s Indian Summer, but where are all the Indians?

Years ago, the Chicago Tribune used to run John T. McCutcheon’s classic illustrated feature, “Injun Summer” every autumn.

A lot of us looked forward to each year’s rerun of the piece, which was first published in the Trib on Sept. 30, 1907. But then, some Native Americans explained they felt McCutcheon’s piece was racist, and to accommodate their feelings, the Trib quit running it, although you can still download a copy of it or even order framed copies from the Trib website.

Like the late film critic Roger Ebert, I have never really felt the piece was racist, but rather was a sort of folkway to explain what happened to all the Native Americans who once lived here in Northern Illinois.

Not to say that there aren’t plenty Native Americans still living around the region, of course. But what really did happen to the thousands of Native People who were living here when the first American pioneers arrived here in northern Illinois in the 1820s and 1830s?

In historic times, the Fox and Illinois River valleys were the home of the member tribes of the Illinois Confederacy. Calling themselves the Illiniwek (which meant “the men”) and called “Illinois” by the French, the related Kaskaskia, Cahokia, Michigamea, Peoria, Moingwena and Tamaroa primarily made their summer homes along the Illinois River, using Kendall County and other areas along the Illinois’ tributaries as hunting grounds and winter quarters.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile the Iroquois, who were attempting to control the trade in furs, led French adventurer, entrepreneur and explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle to fortify Starved Rock and gather several thousand Indians to the area – including the Fox Valley – for mutual protection. After the region’s resources were exhausted some years later, La Salle’s principal lieutenant, Henri de Tonti, abandoned Starved Rock, relocating the entire fur trading and security operation south to first Lake Peoria and then to Kaskaskia and Cahokia along the Mississippi in southern Illinois.

That created a strategic vacuum in the Fox Valley.

The culturally related Fox, Mascouten and Kickapoo tribes unsuccessfully attempted to occupy the region following the French war of extermination waged against the Fox in the 1720s and 1730s, and the Fox Valley was again said to be part of the Illiniweks’ domain. However, in 1746, interrelated bands of the Potawatomi, Ottawa and Chippewa tribes calling themselves the Three Fires Confederacy moved into northern Illinois from their homes in Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Since the last Illiniwek bands had been eliminated from the Fox Valley years previously, the Three Fires claimed the area as their own.

During the French and Indian War of the early 1760s, the Three Fires supported the French. After the

U.S. Indian Agent Thomas Forsythe, the Three Fires could muster some 600 warriors. Forsythe reported that war parties from the Fox River villages of Chiefs Waubonsie and Main Poche participated in raids and battles against the Americans.

After the War of 1812 solidified the United States’ hold on the Illinois Country, the Three Fires tried to protect through diplomacy what they had failed to protect through military action. They were, however, unsuccessful, and were forced into several key land cessions during the next two decades.

‘Black boots’ back in town To the Editor: Wow, I didn’t realize the ‘black boots’ were back in town. Let’s take over a lumber yard and do what we deem as necessary and destroy a man’s business.

I realize the lumber yard isn’t the most pleasing to the eye, but the business has been there forever and I presume has paid taxes like other good neighbors. mixed-blood American relations on the one hand, and full-blooded Indians and those of French (Metis) extraction on the other. Vote yes for Newark Grade School To the Editor: The Newark Grade School District 66 needs our help. They are asking for a tax rate increase. No one wants their taxes to go up, I know I don’t. But then I got some more information. I compared the NGS rate with other grade schools in our area. Nettle Creek G.S.: $2.99; Ottawa G.S.: $4.01; Rutland G.S.: $2.90; Lisbon G.S.: $3. The Newark G.S. tax rate is $2.35. That’s a big difference. We’ve been getting a bargain for many years.

Ninety percent of the school districts in Illinois have higher tax rates than NGS. After learning this, I am OK with the tax increase.

NGS does not ask us very often. Since the district formed in 1947, they got a tax increase in 1974 and in 2003 a referendum passed so they could borrow more money. So as you can see, they’ve only asked us twice in 69 years. That is remarkable.

Vote to eliminate the elected treasurer position

To the Editor: The City of Yorkville has placed a referendum on the November ballot to eliminate the elected treasurer position.

I served as treasurer for three terms and resigned in 2013 and again in 2015 in support of this referendum. I strongly believe that once a finance director is

established, the treasurer position is no longer required.

There are no qualifications to run for treasurer while the finance director’s includes [a] bachelor’s degree in business management, finance, accounting or a closely related field, CPA preferred, and five years of municipal finance work.

The finance director has been the appointed treasurer since January 2013. The duties of the treasurer (Illinois statute 65 ILCS5/3.1-35.40) and those of the finance director (as defined by the city’s job description) are the same. Most surrounding municipalities have either a treasurer or a finance director but not both.

In 2015, I ran for treasurer promising to resign if elected which I did. Now is your chance to make it official and vote to permanently eliminate the elected treasurer position.

8 Neighbors of new Ashley Road

banquet hall moving due to noise

Tom Schnable Jr. and Vicky Schnable told the Kendall County Board recently that they are planning on selling their home after a new banquet facility recently opened across the street on Ashley Road.

The board approved a special use zoning in July for the 17-acre historic farm at 9111 Ashley Road in rural Yorkville.

The venue, Ashley Farm, is owned and operated by Ron and Dave Walker, who own Whitetail Ridge Golf Club on Route 126.

The venue hosted its first wedding event Oct. 15. The Schnables, who said they had concerns about noise and other issues at the zoning hearing in July, told the board at its Oct. 18 meeting that berms and trees have yet to be installed on the Ashley Farm property and that the first wedding resulted in loud music.

“These two conditions were discussed and agreed upon repeatedly, and two events have taken place on this property, yet conditions number 16 and 17 (trees and berm) have not

been started, let alone completed,” Vicky Schnable said. Tom Schnable said the night of the wedding he held up his phone and asked Siri what song was being played; the phone answered correctly that it was “Love Shack” by the B-52’s.

“It’s pretty bad when your phone picks up what’s being played 600, 800 feet away from your house,” he said.

“That’s how loud the music was.”

He said the barn doors were closed, but that it was a cool evening, and that it would be even louder in the summer when it is warm and the doors would be open.

“No one should have to live through this,” he said. “You, the board, need to make changes in this kind of zoning.”

Scott Gryder, chairman of the board’s Planning, Building, and Zoning Committee, said the Sheriff’s Office now has information on the special use properties, so it’s noted if there is a noise violation.

County Administrator Jeff Wilkins said with documentation of a violation, the county can hold a new hearing with the property owner “and either put additional conditions or even up to revoking the special use.”

Newark OKs computer upgrade The Newark Village Board has approved an upgrade to their in-house computer system. Recent computer issues led to the clerk researching upgrades, as well as state security requirements.

On Site Computers of Sandwich presented a bid to install a server and the needed upgrades and training. The board approved the bid of $5,200 and the monthly maintenance fee of $150.

Doug Watkins of Blast Communications addressed the board about access to the water tower to asses the location for a repeater antenna. No contract specifics were discussed. They will provide insurance paperwork before ascending the tower.

Dan Cassin had several prices for improvements and repair to the municipal building. Bids were reviewed for gutters, new steel siding and exterior painting. It was suggested that the board get two more bids before their Nov. 9 meeting.

Improperly cleaned dentures can also cause bad breath.

To reduce or prevent bad breath, practice good oral hygiene. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and brush after each meal.

Brush your tongue daily, and replace your toothbrush every 3 months or after an illness.

Floss regularly, and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day. Visit your dentist twice a year for a professional cleaning and an oral exam. Orchard, banquet hall planned The Kendall County Board unanimously approved a new special use agricultural zoning Oct. 19 for an apple orchard and banquet hall, with several other amenities planned for the southwest corner of Frazier and Creek roads in rural Plano.

Larry and Pam Nelson are planning a banquet facility with a nano-brewery, a micro-distillery, a year-round seasonal festival with petting zoo, and production and sale of sweet cider vinegar for a 45.85-acre property at 15888 Frazier Road in unincorporated Little Rock Township.

In a report to the board, Mike Hoffman of Teska Associates, the county’s zoning consultant, states that the Nel-

sons are envisioning the project, called Cider Creek, to be similar to Kuiper’s Family Farm near Maple Park.

“Activities planned for Cider Creek include apple picking, a pumpkin patch, a store and bakery, kids activities such as a petting zoo and train, and a cider mill with a nano-brewery and micro-distillery,” Hoffman wrote.

Hoffman wrote that it will take “several years” for the project to be completely built, with the orchard and cider mill finished next spring, the store later in 2017 and the banquet facility in 2018.

“We did put quite a number of conditions on this,” Hoffman told the board.

Those conditions include noise restrictions, parking restrictions, and others. The Nelsons will also have to apply separately for liquor licenses for the brewery and distillery, Hoffman said.

Montgomery backs shared, regional water plant

By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com Montgomery Village Board members unanimously agreed Oct. 11 to finalize a Water Works System Master Plan that recommends the village develop and operate a regional water treatment plant with neighboring Oswego and Yorkville.

Village President Matt Brolley said the board will be asked to vote to adopt the master plan during an upcoming meeting.

Brolley noted the plan recommends a shared regional water treatment plant as the village’s preferred alternative to provide a sustainable source of water to village water customers in the coming years.

Currently the village – like many municipalities in the Fox Valley area – pumps its water from a deep underground aquifer. However, water levels in the aquifer have fallen over the past several years, prompting village officials to examine other potential options for a sustainable water source.

The master plan recommends the village consider developing a regional water treatment plant with Oswego and Yorkville which would draw water from the Fox River.

Another potential option suggested in the master plan would be for the village to construct its own water plant that would draw water from the river.

Village President Matt Brolley said he met with the mayors, administrators and public works directors for Yorkville and Oswego this past summer to discuss the possibility of a shared water treatment plant.

Brolley said he is very supportive of working with Yorkville and Oswego on a joint plant and added, “What I came with (from the meeting) was a sense of partnership. We are all aware that we are all in this together and no one is trying to work a deal that is different from anyone else. It’s a group of

people who are trying to explore and determine if this is the best option.

Peter Wallers, president of Engineering Enterprises, Inc., the village’s engineering consultants who prepared the master plan, told the board that by identifying a joint facility as the village’s preferred option they are not closing the door to other potential options for a sustainable water supply.

Wallers, however, said he believes it is important that village officials consider a joint facility because of potentials savings to all three municipalities.

Wallers suggested that though the water level in the deep aquifer is falling, the village still has time on its side when considering other water source options.

He said he would be surprised if work would need to start on the new plant within the next five years. Instead, he said, he expects village officials and representatives from the other municipalities can spend the next several years discussing governance and land acquisition for the facility.

Yorkville City Administrator Bart Olson said that city has endorsed the regional approach to water treatment.

“We were the first of the three communities to endorse the regional approach a couple months ago,” he said.

“Our preference in priority was a regional intake on the river, then if that doesn’t work Yorkville only intake on the river, then if that doesn’t work to continue to focus on groundwater supplies.

“We see the value and efficiencies in a regional approach, and we’re prepared to study that more in depth in the next few years. (Oswego Village Administrator) Dan (Di Santo), (Montgomery Village Administrator) Jeff (Zoephel) and I talk about it every month or so in our shared services meetings.”

YORKVILLE LIBRARY PROGRAMS The Yorkville Public Library will be featuring a special program on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. titled “Mudslinging, Muckraking, and Apple Pie: Presidential Campaigns, the Great American Pastime.”

Political campaigns are getting down and dirty. How did this campaign craziness get started? Believe it or not, they have actually gotten more civil over the years. Don’t believe it? In this program, hear the stories of the mudslinging and muckraking of the Jefferson v. Adams campaign of 1800, the Jackson v. Adams of 1828, and the Lincoln

v. Douglas of 1860. Hear about how Teddy Roosevelt decided to start his own political party during the 1912 campaign.

This program is presented by Terrence Lynch of HFK Presents in Orland Park. Lynch has performed for numerous school, library, and historical society events nationwide for over 10 years.

He has also been a frequent contributor to the WGN Morning Show.

This program, sponsored by the Friends of the library, is intended for adults 18 and older and no registration is required.

Jakob Slavin

Jakob Slavin is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

He plans to attend Augustana College or Illinois Wesleyan as a Pre-Med student.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview.

Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Not only does Jakob excel in academics-- taking honors classes and maintaining a high G.P.A.-- he also excels on the soccer field.

The student athlete, who has played soccer since the age of four, has also played on the Yorkville High School tennis and football teams in the past. He has demonstrated that he has drive both on and off the field.

The son of Rob and Lynn Slavin, Jakob is an avid volunteer throughout his community. He has been a Son of the American Legion (SAL) for 16 years; he is a YHS Student Ambassador and began volunteering with the Special Olympics in the seventh grade. He went on to coach numerous teams, and assist athletes and their guardians with reaching their goals.

“My involvement in extra-curricular activities has not only made me more goal-oriented, team-focused and self-confident, but I have also made lifelong friendships and incredible memories that I will never forget,” he said.

Jakob is a member of National Honor Society and the Yorkville High School Medical Club in hopes to bolster his future medical career.

“I am interested in a career in the medical field and am looking for a college that will balance my career aspirations with my passions to play soccer,” Jakob said.

“Being a student athlete has taught me the importance of respect, time-management, discipline, focus and hard-work.”

That, in addition to volunteering, has given Jakob strong leadership and communication skills, he said.

“All of these values and character traits will help me be successful in college and in my future career,” he said.

Two arrested for blocking railroad tracks

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville police arrested two men Saturday night for blocking the railroad tracks in the city’s downtown, forcing a train to stop.

Daniel C. Vertin, 22, 0-99 block Oak Creek Dr, and Kevin J. Grahovec, 20, 0-99 block Winding Creek Rd., were arrested for unlawful trespass on railroad property after Daniel C. the police investigated Vertin “an incident of subjects on the railroad tracks causing an oncoming train to stop in the area of Route 47 and Hydraulic Avenue, blocking Route 47 traffic temporarily.” The incident occurred at 11:23 p.m., according to police.

Police said that after the investigation was completed, the train departed and traffic resumed to normal. The train was stopped in the area for approximately 40 minutes, police said.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Bomb squad summoned Yorkville police responded to a report of a possible explosive device in the 11000 block of West Fox Road Oct. 23 at 9:01 p.m. Police said the Kane County Sheriff’s Department’s Bomb Squad was summoned to the scene and safely removed the device.

Vehicle damaged A resident of the 2600 block of Lilac Way told Yorkville police Oct. 22 that someone damaged his Ford Focus while it was parked in his driveway. Police said the rear window on the vehicle had been broken out.

Investigate fraud Yorkville police are investigating a fraud incident that occurred in the 700 block of Independence Court Oct. 19. Police said $195.31 was stolen from a bank account using a debit card.

State Street damage Three windows and metal trim on a residence in the 200 block of State Street were found damaged by what appeared to be a BB gun Oct. 22, Yorkville police reported.

Walsh Drive damage Yorkville police responded to reports of four vehicles found damaged Oct. 22 on Walsh Drive. Police said two of the vehicles were parked at a residence in the 1600 block of Walsh Drive and the other two were at a

residence in the 1700 block. The damage in both cases appeared to have been caused by a BB gun. The damage occurred sometime between 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and 8:30 a.m. Oct. 22, according to police.

Window found broken Someone, possibly using a BB gun, broke the window of a residence in the 1800 block of Walsh Drive between midnight Oct. 21 and 6 a.m. Oct. 22, Yorkville police reported.

One hurt, one cited Yorkville police reported that one motorist was injured and another cited in a two-vehicle crash on Countryside Drive at East Kendall Drive Oct. 24 at 6:30 a.m. Police said Elissa Bailey, no age given, of the 8000 block of Sandwich Road, was injured and transported to Rush Copley Medical Center, Yorkville.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, Louis Denny, no age given, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Vehicle damaged Someone broke out the rear window on a vehicle parked at a business in the 900 block of Prairie Crossing in Yorkville Oct. 21, police reported.

Calculators stolen A total of three Texas Instruments calculators worth approximately $473 were stolen on or before Oct. 21 from a business in the

300 block of Veterans Parkway, according to Yorkville police. Police said there are no suspects and the case is being closed.

Warrant arrest Yorkville police arrested Latoya Foster, 29, of the 1300 block of Monomoy Street, Aurora, after stopping her vehicle in the 1600 block of North Bridge Street Oct. 20 at 12:24 p.m.

Police said Foster was wanted on a Naperville police department warrant for battery and was cited for driving on an expired registration.

DUI among charges Yorkville police arrested Tanner Wilson, 22, of the 1200 block of Willow Way, Yorkville, after the vehicle he was driving struck two parked cars on Sycamore Road and Chestnut Lane Oct. 20 at 1:57 a.m. Police said Wilson faces charges of driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed, improper lane usage and no insurance.

Cars damaged Yorkville police took a report of two more cars being scratched while parked in the lot of a business in the 1900 block of South Bridge Street Oct. 19.

Traffic citations Robert A. Hanlons, 56, of the 100 block of Oak Avenue, Sandwich, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving while license revoked.

Yorkville seniors secure winning end to season

There were many hugs and a few tears shared between the Yorkville football players and coaches as the final quarter of the 2016 football season played out at Campbell Field.

The Foxes (2-7) endured their share of hardships, but managed to snap a six-game skid by winning their season finale, 49-10, over visiting LaSalle-Peru (3-6) on Friday.

“We were obviously very hungry for a win, and we’ll take it any way we can get it,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “Our seniors had a lot to do with that tonight.”

The defense set the stage early, holding LaSalle-Peru to -10 yards in its opening possession, and Yorkville’s offense put together its first scoring drive in just 51 seconds. Austin Avery (11 carries, 128 yards, 3 TDs) broke out for a 41-yard run to the Cavaliers 19, and Jason Lewan took the next handoff from quarterback Ty Liaromatis into the end zone for the touchdown for the 7-0 lead.

to create a 7-3 game with 11:09 to go in the half.

Once again, Yorkville responded quickly, and Trent Delaney scrambled for a 52-yard gain on second down to put the Foxes at the L-P 9. Brandon Lee took the next handoff for the 9-yard score, and Cade Henry was good on his next extra point for a 14-3 lead.

Jake Delaney came up with an interception at the Yorkville 15 to stop the Cavaliers, but the game took a dangerous turn for the Foxes. After holding L-P to -7 yards on its next possession, Yorkville fumbled the punt at its own 21-yard line. L-P’s Lucas Salazar scored with his 21-yard run to create a 14-10 game with 3:39 to play in the second quarter.

That’s when Yorkville took command.

CJ Bell caught the ensuing kickoff at the Yorkville 8 and rambled 92 yards to the opposite end zone for a score, extending Yorkville’s lead 21-10 after Henry’s kick.

Two plays later, Chris Galloway recovered a L-P fumble near midfield, and Yorkville put together an eightplay, 47-yard scoring drive before intermission. Lee caught a 13-yard

pass from Liaromatis on third-and-14, and took the next handoff past the first down marker to keep the drive alive. After a 14-yard run by Avery, he scored the 2-yard touchdown for a 28-10 halftime lead.

“I feel like this game we really came out and put the pedal to the metal. We didn’t let up,” Avery said. “We’ve had some games in the past where we let up, and we did not make that mistake in this game. Sure, I get the numbers in the book, but you could drive a truck through some of those holes. Those guys on the line worked their [butts] off tonight. They did a great job.”

Avery put in two more scores in the third quarter to seal Yorkville’s win.

The first score was set up by Lee’s 40-yard run to the L-P 15, and Avery scored from the 8-yard line for a 3510 lead with 10:32 to play in the third quarter.

On the Foxes’ next possession, Yorkville started with short field position from the Cavaliers’ 23. Liaromatis (3-for-6, 32 yards) scrambled for 15 yards, and Avery closed the drive with a 9-yard score to build Yorkville’s lead, 42-10, with 7:10 to go in the quarter.

Behind the efforts of Delaney (7 car-

ries, 88 yards) and Bell (3 carries, 26 yards), Yorkville added one more score to the night with Bell’s 8-yard score in the final minute of the third quarter.

Defensively, Yorkville held L-P to just 66 yards rushing and 185 yards of total offense. Cavaliers quarterback Kennedy Carey completed 14 of 25 passes for 119 yards and one interception.

“Our kids executed very well,” McGuire said. “It was fun to hear our kids yell out our scouting report and things we told them ahead of time this week.

Obviously, they put some time in the classroom watching film because our kids had a pretty good idea what they were going to try to do to us.”

Of Yorkville’s seven losses, five were to playoff-bound teams, including a pair of undefeated teams in West Aurora (9-0) and Sterling (9-0), which defeated DeKalb (7-2), 43-42 in double overtime on Friday. Rochelle (5-4) and Sycamore (5-4) also reach Week 10.

“We played some good teams – there’s no doubt. We say ‘shoulda woulda’ won more games, but in the end we came out with a win and sent the seniors out on a good note. That’s always a positive,” Avery said.

The Yorkville Middle School eighth-grade football team won its third consecutive Fox River Prairie Conference championship. The Foxes downed Geneva, 14-0, in a muddy semifinal contest before beating St. Charles Thompson, 14-6, in the championship game. The team finished the year with a 9-1 record in A games, and a 1-1 record in B games. Leading scorers on the season included Doug Burson with 13 total touchdowns and Cole Yearsley with nine. Luke Davies completed 12 touchdown passes and Chase Divito had five touchdown receptions during the course of the season.

The Yorkville Judo Club sent 14 players to the Illinois State Judo Tournament last month. Adam Eckhardt took silver, Rick Undesser IV took bronze and Ethan Eckhardt took bronze. Makayla Undesser was a bronze medalist, Ian Kiilsgaard was a silver medalist, as were Ryan Lambert and Nate Perez. Josh Smart won bronze, Gloria Sigwerth earned both a silver and a bronze, Jason Hargrove won silver and Frank Funk took bronze. Sam Sleezer, Ben Smart and Ian Bello also competed.

“They were just fast. We’ve played fast teams and we’ve played really technical teams, but we have not played many teams that are fast and technical,” Johnson said. “They were as fast as our fastest player and had a good touch on the ball. That’s just something we’re not used to. ... We worked hard tonight; we just weren’t proactive.”

The Yorkville boys soccer team went 4-0 against Southwest Prairie Conference teams this season, but the fifth one proved to be the one to end the Foxes’ season.

No. 11-seeded Romeoville, which finished fifth in the 10-team SPC standings, put in two goals against Yorkville in the first 21 minutes of Wednesday’s Class 3A Metea Valley Regional semifinal game and that proved to be more than enough offense in a 3-0 shutout win.

Romeoville (13-7-2) advanced to Saturday’s regional final against No. 3 Neuqua Valley (11-5-4), which outlasted No. 19 East Aurora 1-0 in overtime in the first semifinal game of the night.

Neuqua Valley defeated Romeoville, 5-2.

Less than six minutes into the game, Romeoville David Cahue broke through the Yorkville defense to put the Spartans on the scoreboard before Anthony Duarte came off the bench put in a second goal at the 21 minute mark for the 2-0 lead.

Yorkville (15-2-2) created several scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Romeoville made a save after a corner kick by Steve Ramirez, Jackson Torok could not find an opening after his charge at the net and Bobby Reichert couldn’t keep up with a fast breakaway dribble on Metea Valley’s turf field before Spartan keeper Joel Toro scooped up the fast ball.

“When we’re not scoring in bulk, we can get a little frantic and we turn the ball over,” Yorkville coach Andrew Johnson said. “We couldn’t slow the game down. The ball will always travel faster than a player. We let them run circles around us instead of running

Foxes take two runner-up finishes to Minooka at regional races

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com There were plenty of unknowns prior to Yorkville’s Class 3A debut in the Normal Regional, but the Foxes maintain the same postseason goals.

“Survive and get through,” Yorkville coach Chris Muth said.

Yorkville did just that, as both the boys and girls teams captured runner-up finishes behind Minooka last Saturday to send full teams into the Edwardsville Sectional, which will take place at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville beginning at 1 p.m.

“We’d love to win a sectional at the triple A level – I think that would be outstanding – but again, it’s a short term goal that we can’t put in front of what our long team goal is, which is competing at our best at state,” Muth said. “If it happens, it happens, but we want to make sure we’re running great and progressing into what we need to do for the state meet and beyond.”

In the girls’ race, No. 2 seed Minooka outlasted No. 3 seed Yorkville by four points in the final standings, 28-32, while Normal Community West was a distant third with 132 points.

Nicole Greyer set a fast pace with eventual race winner Mackenzie Callahan of Minooka and Greyer placed second with a time of 17:07 to trail Callahan by just three seconds at the finish line. Alexis Grandys was fifth overall in 17:36 while Alyssa Edwards was seventh (17:49), Maddie Dearborn (17:57) eighth and Olivia Borowiak (18:32) 10th.

“Nicole ran an outstanding race. It was by far her best race of the year,” Muth said. “Her workouts have been stellar all year long – especially this past month – and it finally translated into a race that she should be very proud of.”

Minooka’s Soren Knudsen set a clear distance between himself and the field of nearly 70 runners, winning in 14:29.

But Yorkville’s pack allowed the Foxes to trail Minooka by just 11 points in the final standings, 37-48, while East Moline United was third at 91 points.

Ben Summers was third overall in 15:34, and Zack Price was fourth in 15:35 while Alexx Nauman (15:48), Eric Naumann (16:16) and Alex Loos (16:21) rounded out the top five.

keep gaining? I feel like our guys still have not reached their full potential yet, which is exciting. It puts me in a very positive mindset going into sectionals,” Muth said. “Their goals are different from the girls, but just as important.

What they’re trying to accomplish is a very big feat in keeping the tradition alive of 10 years straight at state. Last week at regionals was a very big step forward as a team.”
