Second meeting slated for Oct. 25

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville residents had an opportunity this week to learn about what would happen if city voters approve a referendum Nov. 8 granting the city home rule status under state law.

City Administrator Bart Olson explained the impact of home rule on the city and on its taxpayers during a special public forum during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. A second meeting is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 25, again before the regularly scheduled City Council meeting.

Plano woman killed in fatal Yorkville crash

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A 23-year-old Plano woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in was struck from behind by another vehicle near the intersection of Route 47 and Corneils Road in Yorkville.

Yorkville police say Ashley Lopez of the 400 block of Abe Street was pronounced dead after being transported to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Police say Lopez was a passen-

ger in a 2008 Nissan Altima stopped in traffic in the northbound lane of Route 47 when a 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Kyle Delhaye, 20, of South Elgin “struck the rear bumper” of the Altima “causing both vehicles to exit the roadway.”

Police say Delhaye was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Selma Martinez, 56, of Plano, the driver of the Altima, and Angela Lopez, 22, also of Plano, another passenger in the Altima, were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment of their injuries.

Resident Kris asked if any home rule tax implemented, such as a gas tax or amusement tax, would have to be passed by the City Council and if the public would know in advance how the money from the taxes is to be spent.

City Attorney Kathleen Field Orr said such taxes would be part of the annual budget process, which would show how the revenue from the taxes is to be spent. Olson said passage of such taxes would involve the typical 48-hour notice of a public meeting, as well as a 15- to 30-day notice of a public hearing.

“Certainly the intent of good government would be to explain why we’re doing it, what we’re doing it for,” Olson said.

Three residents attended Tuesday’s forum, where Olson presented frequently asked questions and other information about forming a home rule unit of government.

Olson explained that even if the referendum were to pass, if residents later decided they didn’t like the home rule style of government, they could place a referendum on the ballot to have it reversed. This has happened in communities in Illinois in the past, Olson said.

The general argument in favor of a home rule style of government is that it gives more control to local government on issues that are mandated by state government.

At the meeting, resident Tom Gilmour questioned the objective of seeking a home rule style of government.

If elected, will you accept county paid health insurance and mileage reimbursements?

My health insurance is currently through my wife’s employer so I will not accept the county health insurance. I will not ask for mileage reimbursement to attend County Board meetings, activities and duties within Kendall County. If County Board activities/duties require me to travel outside of Kendall County, I will ask for reimbursement only for those items.

In my years of serving on the County Board, I have not taken health insurance as a Board member.

I do accept mileage reimbursement for the few out of county meetings I attend.

What, in your view, are the two major issues now confronting the board? Please explain.

1) The budget. The County’s revenues are inching up at approximately 1% per year, yet the expenses continue to climb at a greater clip. A large part of that is due to the State of Illinois’ dire budget, and also due to the many individuals being forced to leave the County as a result of high real estate taxes and for better opportunities. Accordingly, difficult decisions regarding priorities must be made. 2) Keeping pace with infrastructure and staffing needs with tough budget demands, including the many unfunded mandates from the State.

Is there fat in the county budget? Please identify expenditures you would seek to cut.

There’s always fat in a budget. My biggest concern regarding unneeded/unnecessary line items goes back to priorities. I have studied the entire budget and there are numerous line items that concern me. Actually, the entire budgeting process is a convoluted mess if you want to know the truth. I can’t wait to get in there and dig around and put things right. Excess doesn’t always come in the form of cutting a single “line item” either. We need to look at purchasing efficiencies and means testing for example. I also think the bidding threshold limits should be lowered as well. Competition will bring lower prices for the taxpayers.

All board members, elected officials, and department heads have a great sense of pride in their areas of expertise, and all have areas of the budget which they feel need some trimming. Within any governmental organization, there needs to be a majority vote to pass a budget. Tough decisions were made for the FY2016 County budget, and tough decisions will be necessary for FY2017. Many of the challenges facing the County are related to State and Federal mandates, unfortunately, which are beyond local control.

Should the county continue to maintain and operate the Ellis House and Equestrian Center? Please explain.

The short answer is no. Our County government should not compete with private enterprise, which is exactly what it does at Ellis House and Equestrian Center. Taxpayers are being forced to subsidize other peoples’ hobbies at the Equestrian Center, including people who live outside of Kendall County. The Ellis House wedding operations directly compete with tax paying businesses.

In 2016, Kendall County taxpayers are subsidizing at least 16 weddings through salaries, insurance, maintenance, advertising, pensions and more. Just think of the income that could have produced if those weddings were held at private businesses in Kendall County employing Kendall County citizens! Don’t get me wrong on forest preserves, I love the outdoors and the properties we have.

We just need to treat them as what they are: places where people can enjoy the outdoors. Forest preserves are not business centers.

The Ellis House & Equestrian Center is definitely a challenging proposition. My preference is to look at the overall budget of the Forest Preserve and make needed adjustments based on the total budget. The Forest Preserve District hired a new director just under two years ago, and he has made some tremendous strides in improving the District’s financial position. So long as we can continue to maintain and improve the overall budget, we can provide different programs to the residents.

Budgeting is number 1, as it always is and always should be. An unbalanced budget is simply unacceptable. We can’t have unbalanced budgets in our homes and businesses and government should be no different. I refuse to balance the budget by raising taxes. Number 2, we must set forth legitimate priorities. The County Government is charged by law with certain duties and that’s what it should do; no more, no less. We need to take care of those who can’t take care of themselves or who need help during tough times through agencies like CASA and the Veterans Assistance Commission. We need great infrastructure and roads so businesses can thrive. We need easy, FAIR and consistent permitting without favoritism. And, our Sheriff’s office is important for public safety and confidence. They do a great job now, and it needs to stay that way. If people aren’t safe or don’t feel safe, Kendall County will suffer in numerous ways.

Small sacrifice needed to help PADS program Every weekend, many people sit in their comfy recliners and watch football for hours at a time.

For an equal amount of time, or perhaps less, once a month, people have the chance to help provide shelter to people who have no home in Kendall County.

This Sunday begins the seventh season of the Kendall County PADS homeless shelter program.

The program provides warm overnight shelter in locations throughout the county, along with supper, a light breakfast the next morning, and a boxed lunch to take when they leave.

We think it’s a wonderful, needed program, but the organizers say they need more volunteers. They have 500 dedicated volunteers but they need about

100 more so they don’t have to close a shelter on occasion during the season, something they say they’ve never had to do in their past six seasons.

A volunteer for the program typically works one four and a half hour shift per month for six months during the PADS season. They also need volunteers for feeding the guests.

It can be difficult to wrap one’s head around the fact that homelessness is an issue in a county that is seen as prosperous. But the facts show there are people with basic needs like shelter and food right here at home.

PADS organizers point out that Kendall County has the fourth highest home foreclosure rate in the state, and 1,528 county residents applied for low in-

come energy assistance, or LIHEAP, in 2015, which was a 30 percent increase over 2013. Additionally,13 percent of adults in the county have no health insurance, organizers say. Statistics like that equate to human beings who are left without a roof over their heads, particularly during the brutal winter months.

Over the program’s six seasons, PADS has served 346 individuals, including men, women and children, and nearly 7,000 times their shelters were used by someone in need. The program has served 20,972 meals.

In addition to setting a state speed limit, the law also mandated drivers had to stop their vehicles immediately upon frightening a horse or other animal.

Four years later, in 1907, the General Assembly passed legislation requiring motor vehicle registration and the display of license plates. Vehicles were also required to have lights, horns, and brakes (always handy things to have). The law also set speed limits. Explained a June 7, 1907 Kendall County Record article: “The law regulates the speed to six miles while

going around corners, ten miles on business streets and 15 miles an hour in the resident district. In the country 20 miles an hour is permitted.”

In 1909, the law addressed motorcycles for the first time, requiring “that no person shall drive a motor vehicle or motor bicycle...at a speed greater than is reasonable and proper having regard to the traffic...or so as to endanger the life or limb or injure the property of any person.” The statewide maximum speed limit was raised to 25 mph in 1911.

Then in 1914, speed limit enforcement finally came to the Kendall County Seat in Yorkville. According to a July 1, 1914, warning in the Record: “Notice is hereby given that the state law with regard to the speed of automobiles will be enforced in Yorkville.

The law places the following limits on speed in town: “In closely built-up business portions, 10 miles an hour.

“In residence districts, 15 miles per hour.

“Outside business and residence portion, 20 miles per hour.

“When going around any curve or corner, 6 miles per hour.

“The penalties are heavy fines; auto drivers are requested to take note of these restrictions.”

More revisions to the law passed in 1919 differentiated between autos, trucks, and buses. Auto speed limits maxed out at 30 mph, while the maximum for trucks and buses ranged from 12-15 mph depending on weight and type of tires (hard rubber or pneumatic).

Those limits pretty much stayed the same until 1974 when the federal “Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act” set the national 55 mph limit. In April of 1987, when Congress allowed speed limits on certain interstates to rise to 65 mph, the days of the universal 55 mph limit were numbered.

What’s all this mean? Not much, but it does offer some perspective: And while the 55 mph limit may not have been the greatest thing, at least we weren’t required to have somebody walk in front of us to control frightened animals.

Hillary didn’t protect four Americans in far-off Benghazi; how will she protect millions of Americans at home? No details yet about how she’ll annihilate ISIS and protect Americans.

Various diseases could render her unfit to manage America’s presidency. Voters watched her on TV lurching from health disorders. Her doctor claims she’s “fit to serve and in excellent health.” Really?

Julianne Embry, senior manager of public relations with Office Depot, Inc., OfficeMax’s parent company, said the store closing is part of a “three-year

strategic plan announced in August 2016...to optimize its store footprint in North America, including approximately 300 store closures of Office Depot and OfficeMax stores by 2018.

The company is closing the Yorkville store on Nov. 12, Embry said.

She said the OfficeMax store in Oswego will remain open.

The Yorkville store has been an anchor in the Yorkville Marketplace shopping center, which opened in 2002.

Brooke Jensen is a Senior at Yorkville High School and plans on attending Illinois State University in the fall where she will study Mathematics Education. She is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award. A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office. Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice. The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors The daughter of James and Pamela Jensen, Brooke is an avid swimmer and volunteer. Brooke swims competitively and teaches swim lessons as part of the Delta Aquatics club swim team. She is also the captain of the Yorkville/IMSA Co-Op swim team. A hopeful future educator, Jensen spends much of her spare time giving back to her community. She is a member of Yorkville’s T.R.Y. Club (Teens Reaching Youth), and works with younger children to build strong character and encourage positive behavior choices. A founder of YHS’s T.A.L.K. program (Teens Activating the Language of Kindness), Jensen is also one of five Class of 2017 students to take part in the S.L.I.P. (Student Leadership Initiative Program) where she learns to hone leadership abilities. She also serves as a student ambassador and recently joined Educators Rising. Brooke is currently a member of the National Honor Society, and was elected as the society’s treasurer. She participates in many community activities through her church, Oswego Presbyterian, and volunteers as a Kindergarten Sunday School Teacher. Through volunteer initiatives, Jensen has given her time to Hesed House, and raised money for hungry children around the world. She has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and Feed My Starving Children. “Being in numerous clubs in high school has helped me learn how to collaborate positively with people,” Jensen wrote in her application. “I hope to be a teacher that not only leads children, but leads everyone in a positive encouraging direction. I’m excited for the possibilities in my future and am looking forward to making a difference every day.”

Kendall PADS shelter program needs volunteers p.m. to 3 a.m., and the third shift from 2:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Each shift has a set of duties – for example, first shift sets out mattresses and registers guests as they arrive, second shift prepares boxed lunches for the next day and oversees the guests, third shift cleans up the PADS site and checks out guests.

The program ideally needs four people per shift, two men and two women, for each night, Engelhardt said.

“If we don’t have at least two volunteers in the middle of the night, we can’t open,” she said. “If absolutely necessary, we can go down to two, but we would prefer not to, because we’ve increased our capacity to 20 [guests].

So we want to keep a good ratio between volunteers and guests.”

Engelhardt acknowledged that the second and third shifts are the hardest to fill, but said it’s only a once-a-month shift six times a year.

“It’s hard when people are working, but we remind people that it is just once a month for six times,” she said.

Organizers of the Kendall County PADS homeless shelter program say they are in great need for volunteers for the upcoming season, which starts this Sunday, Oct. 16.

The PADS program, which stands for Public Action to Deliver Shelter, generally runs fall through spring, with the last night of this season being April 14. It uses local churches in the area that provide shelter for the homeless on a different night each week.

Anne Engelhardt of Yorkville, who serves as the organization’s executive director, said PADS typically needs 600 volunteers each season to run the program, and they are 100 short of that goal.

“We’re a little concerned,” she said.

People retire or have done it for a few years and take a break, she said.

“There are things that happen in people’s lives, which is why we need to have some fresh volunteers,” she said.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Yorkville Christian High School for a job shadow program.

The program gives students the opportunity to gain insight into law enforcement prior to entering college and deciding if they want to pursue a degree in law enforcement. The program will last for three months and give students the opportunity to spend time in all divisions of the sheriff’s office.

The first participant in the pro-

gram began their job shadowing in the corrections division on Sept. 19. The student will also be riding with patrol deputies, spending time in the records division, at the courthouse, and with the investigations unit.

“The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is excited to be able to provide practical experience to students who show an interest in law enforcement and partner with educational professionals to enhance learning opportunities for students,” said Sheriff Dwight A. Baird.

The Fern Dell Historic Association plans their 2016 Cemetery Walk for Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Millington-Newark Cemetery, on Fox River Drive, Millington.

Tours will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the restored chapel. The walk will feature information at the grave sites of local residents from the 1800s and early 1900s.

This is not intended to be a scary event, but to focus on the history of the people who helped shape the area. Parking is on the north end of the cemetery, and tours will be in small groups lead by a speaker.

The group asks a small donation for this event.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Cellphone photo incident Yorkville police responded to a suspicious circumstances incident at a grocery store in the 100 block of East Veterans Parkway Oct. 10 at 3:39 p.m. Police said a 62 year-old male subject was reported to be taking photos of a female with his cellphone. When questioned by officers, police said the male subject refused to show officers his phone.

The female declined to sign a complaint, police said.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS 100 block of West Veterans Parkway Oct. 3 at 3:52 p.m. Police said a customer attempted to use a false Social Security number to obtain credit to purchase merchandise.

Suspect flees police The driver of a vehicle stopped by county sheriff’s deputies for a traffic violation in the 100 block of Harbor Drive in Oswego Township Oct. 10 at 9:57 p.m. fled the vehicle. Police said they could not apprehend the suspect.

Police said they then seized the suspect’s vehicle and are continuing their investigation.

Kendall Drive Oct. 5 and damaged the vehicle while attempting to remove the radio.

Local residents and businesses are invited to bring personal documents for secure, onsite shredding.

COPS, a service provider of document storage and disposal, will have its mobile shred unit on hand to destroy documents onsite. People will be able to watch their documents being shredded through the unit’s observa-

tion window. Items with staples and paperclips can also be shredded.

Properly disposing of personal documents is one way for people to protect themselves from identity theft. KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Aurora Specialty Textiles Group held a grand opening celebration Oct. 5 at the company’s new 124,000-squarefoot manufacturing plant on Route 47 just north of Cannonball Trail in Yorkville.

Firm officials also unveiled a new logo and mission statement during the celebration attended by approximately 100 customers, staff and community leaders.

The celebration marked the end of a two-year period that began with the decision to invest millions in a new, state-of-the art North American textile manufacturing operation, in Yorkville.

Aurora is a subsidiary of Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Meridian Industries, Inc. “Today is a tremendous day for Aurora Specialty Textile Group,” said Dan LaTurno, company president. “It marks the symbolic end of our transition from the Aurora plant to our new Yorkville operation, and the beginning of a new, exciting era. We’ve been committed to becoming a global leader in wide width coating and finishing and this new plant, which could not operate today without the hard work of the people here, is testament to what we are calling today ‘The New Aurora.’”

Bristol Bay Literacy Coach, Kelly Bachewicz, started a professional book club with teachers. The selected book is Write This Way by Kelly Boswell. The book discusses the power of modeling writing within the classroom as teacher modeling has been shown to have a positive impact on student writing. The first book club meeting took place before school on Oct.6 and the teachers had a lively discussion about how they can start to incorporate more modeling into their classroom. This club will meet monthly with the goal of having teachers incorporate more modeling by stepping out of their comfort zone and adjusting their current practices.

The Yorkville Intermediate School (YIS) PTO hosted the Foxy TRY-Athalon on Sept. 29. YIS students raised $9,208.20. The money was used to purchase 30 Chromebooks and a cart for use in the school. The grand prize raffle winner was fourth-grader Julia Hosu, pictured with YIS principal Steve Bjork, who took home her Chromebook. Once again, the Newark volleyball team found itself in familiar territory playing for the Little Ten Conference tournament, but a young team ran into a more experienced Somonauk squad.

The Norsemen (17-13) entered the tournament with a perfect 6-0 conference match record and picked up an early win over Serena before defeating Leland-Earlville 25-7, 25-22 in the semifinal game last Thursday. On Friday, Newark met Somonauk on the court and settled for a runner-up finish with a 9-25, 18-25 loss to the Bobcats.

Mattie Chapman had four kills and two blocks and Mikayla Williams added a pair of kills in the effort.

Newark will get another chance at Somonauk on Thursday, and a win would propel Newark to the LTC regular season championship after the Bobcats lost earlier to Leland-Earlville.

“If we want to win it outright, we need to win,” Newark coach Tonya Grayson said. “I’m good at sharing, but not when it comes to conference titles. We struggled terribly on Friday night. Somonauk played very well and came out on fire.

les heel all season has been our errors and part of that is just because we’re incredibly young. I start two freshmen and three sophomores.”

On Tuesday, Newark faced Harvest Christian in a non-conference game in Elgin and lost 10-25, 19-25. Chapman had four blocks and a pair of kills and Olivia Nelson made six assists.

The final stretch of the regular season includes the final home game against IMSA on Oct. 17, the LTC finale at Serena on Oct. 18 and the two-day Immaculate Conception Invite Oct. 21-22.

Newark received the No. 2 seed in the Flanagan-Cornell Sectional and will open play on Oct. 25 in the Class 1A Illinois Lutheran Regional. The Norsemen will play the winner of the play-in game between No. 8 Illinois Lutheran and No. 11 Donovan. No. 7 Gardner-South Wilmington and No. 7 St. Anne play in the second semifinal game, with the winners meeting on Oct. 27 in the regional final.

“I would love to see this team win the regional,” Grayson said. “I think that with where we’re at, that would be a good, solid accomplishment.

“Beyond that, it becomes a roll of the dice. Anything can happen on any given night. I know that we’re capable of winning our regional if we play well.”

Yorkville rises up to take second in NIB12 tourney

In the end, the West Division of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference is the stronger half when it comes to girls tennis – but Yorkville made a strong challenge for the top.

“The girls gave us everything they had that day. We hoped to get through the first round, but we only won two of the five matches,” Yorkville coach Frank Yabsley said. “Everyone was right there and it was a battle. I was very proud and everyone fought right to the end.

“We just couldn’t get the doubles into the championship round.”

Geneseo had the best record in the West Division, and Kaneland edged out Yorkville in the East Division, but Yorkville (12-5) finished second overall in the 10-team tournament behind the Maple Leafs.

Yorkville came away with three All-Conference courts, with freshman Ashley Hatch taking a runner-up finish at No. 1 singles, and senior Bella

Perez finishing second at No. 2 singles.

Seniors Sam Keane and Bri Pickering took fifth place at No. 1 doubles to also earn All-Conference honors.

Hatch opened her bracket with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sterling and 6-3, 6-1 over Geneseo, but fell to Morris’ Megan Davey, 6-0, 6-2.

“She was just a little off on everything,” Yabsley said. “It was just one of those days. We were trying to change things up and change things around and try and get some momentum going, and unfortunately Ashley wasn’t at her best that day and Davey was.”

Perez defeated Sycamore 7-5, 7-5 and won 6-0, 7-5 over DeKalb, but lost to Morris’ Alyssa Larson 6-2, 6-3 to finish second.

“It’s a nice cap to her senior year,” Yabsley said. “She tried to battle until the end.”

Keane and Pickering battled their way back through the bracket after a first-round loss to LaSalle-Peru, defeating Sterling and Sycamore to face DeKalb in the finals. The Yorkville duo won 6-3, 6-1 to take fifth place.

Two invitationals over a four-day span will certainly prime the Yorkville cross country team for the championship stretch just ahead.

Yorkville raced in the Naperville Twilight Invite on Oct. 5 before entering the West Aurora Blackhawk Stampede on Saturday where the girls’ team clinched a first-place finish.

“With two meets in one week, we really didn’t get to do that much training aside from some recovery miles, but our emphasis was on some very important meets and some important progression that we needed,” Yorkville coach Chris Muth said.

Yorkville will now turn its focus to Saturday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet in Sterling where the Foxes will try and defend a pair of titles against a talented field. The girls’ race will feature Class 2A No. 16-ranked Kaneland, while the boys race will be stacked with three top-10 Class 2A teams in No. 6 Sterling, No. 7 Sycamore and No. 9 Kaneland. Yorkville is unranked in the Class 3A boys, and ranks No. 3 among Class 3A girls.

“On the boys side, it’s going to be real tough. For the first time in four or five years, we’re not heavy favorites. It’ll be a nice challenge to see if the boys step up,” Muth said. “It’s championship season from here on out, and it starts this weekend.”

In the boys’ race, Neuqua Valley placed all five scoring runners in the top seven to win the team title with a score of 24 points, followed by Downers Grove North (55) and Hinsdale Central (81). Yorkville was sixth overall, led by Zach Price’s time of 15:36, which was good enough for 27th place. Alexx Nauman (29th, 15:38) and Ben Summers (31st, 15:41) followed closely behind. Matt Cox (16:07) and Eric Nauman (16:12) rounded out the top five.

“This week was probably the best week of racing the boys have had. It’s been a concern for me wondering if they will be able to make the state meet in triple A. We’ve had a 10-year streak of making the state meet and that’s one of our goals,” Muth said. “We’re on the right path after watching the last two races.”

The Yorkville girls won the Blackhawk Stampede behind a top two finish from Greyer and Grandys.

Greyer won the race in 17:28 and Grandys clocked in at 18:04, while Borowiak finished in 18:15 for fourth and Dearborn was fifth in 18:17 while Edwards clocked in at 18:44 to take 18th.

For the boys team, Cox (16:21) and Eric Nauman (16:23) finished in the top five.

Foxes win 2 sectional trophies KENDALL COUNTY RECORD For the first time since 2012, both the Yorkville Middle School boys and girls cross country teams are sectional champions.

Helena Kleronomos kept pace with Batavia’s lead runner, Katrina Schlenker, through the first mile, but Schlenker pulled away for a victory in 11:16. Kleronomos finished in second with a time of 11:26. She now has three of the top five fastest two-mile times run by a Yorkville Middle School girl.

Hailey Simmons (11:49), Sara Klemm (11:59) and Sydney Peterson (12:04) joined Kleronomos in earning All-Sectional honors.

Nikki Vergara finished 16th in 12:24, which was good enough to secure Yorkville’s 33-45 win over Minooka. Brooke O’Carroll (12:34) and Jinnaea Richardson (12:50) also competed for Yorkville.

In the boys’ race, Ivan Westcott became the first Yorkville Middle School boy to win an individual sectional championship with his top finish of 10:32. Cade Grimaldi finished in second place in 10:39. Austin Popplewell (10:50) took sixth place and Matthew Angerame (11:06) became the fourth All-Sectional runner for Yorkville finishing in 10th place.

Danny Harker (11:10), Jack Brucher (11:18) and Colin Kachlic (12:00) helped Yorkville turn in a dominating 31-56 victory over second-place Minooka.

Runner Ivan Westcott became the first Yorkville boy to win an individual sectional championship with his first-place finish in 10:32.

The boys team will be competing at the IESA state meet for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time in seven years. The girls’ team is returning for the sixth time in seven years after missing state in 2015. The State meet is held Oct. 15 at Maxwell Park in Normal, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Don’t want to pretend we didn’t care about today, but it was a big accomplishment to reach sectional so I’m very proud of the players,� Baker said.

Kait Natividad waited nervously as the last of the results were being posted at Tuesday’s Class 2A Lockport Sectional at Broken Arrow Golf Course.

The Yorkville freshman girls golfer fired a 79, which looked to be the cutoff mark for who would advance to this weekend’s state finals at Hickory Point Golf Club in Forsyth.

After an anxious moment when it was incorrectly announced that there would be a playoff at 79 to determine the qualifiers, Natividad was relieved to learn that she was state-bound.

Natividad finished in a three-way tie for 16th with her seven-over total.

That allowed her and Lincoln-Way East’s Hannah Hill to claim the final two qualifying spots at the rugged sectional. She was the lone freshman among the 10 individual qualifiers. “When they told me that there was going to be a playoff at 79, I was freaking out,� Natividad said. “I had done the math so many times in my head

and looked over all of the numbers, so I thought it was over. “I knew the girls who were playing here since I had done the research. So I knew that they could put up some really low numbers. In my head, I tried to figure who could come out. I had a really good front nine and shot a 38. My putter kind of let me down on the back but I had a really good par-putt save on 18, which in the end, put me through to state. “I’m hoping from here that the only way to go is up. Hopefully next year the numbers will keep going down. I’ll put the same amount of work into it and hopefully that pays off.�

The Newark golf team shot a season-best 356 at the Class 1A Seneca Regional at Nettle Creek Country Club to finish third and advance as a team to the Westminster Christian Sectional.

On Oct. 4, Newark was anchored

by Cameron Myre, who shot a thirdplace overall round of 80.

Newark also counted an 89 from Brett Myre, 91 from Wyatt Snyder, and 96 from Corey Jacobson to round out the team total.

Cameron Myre, Brett Myre and Snyder were all personal best 18-hole scores. Connor Baker (98) and Porter Arneson (123) also competed for Newark. “Pretty big to have those scores on regional day,� Newark coach Chad Baker said. “Connor’s round was disappointing for him being the No. 2 man all year, but his team really had his back today and we all get to advance. I’m very proud of the way the guys played today – 18 shots better than our team score last week at Nettle Creek in conference. We peaked at the right time. Now, hopefully, we can post some good scores Monday at Randall Oaks.�

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com Yorkville took the lead on a 54-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter – by far the biggest play for either team – and then the Sycamore offense went three-and-out.

At that point, the Spartans defense took things to the next level, not allowing a first down on the last three Yorkville possessions and allowing the offense to score the decisive touchdown with 3:19 left.

Jake Peloquin sealed the 21-14 win for the Spartans (4-3 overall, 2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) with an interception in the closing minute, bringing the ball down to the Yorkville 5 and allowing Sycamore to run out the clock against the Foxes (1-6, 0-3).

“It was a tight ball game throughout and it just came down to the end.

They made plays and we didn’t at the end,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said.

Yorkville took the lead with 8:21 left in the fourth when quarterback Ty Liaromatis found Jason Lewan for a gain, then a missed tackle let Lewan go 54 yards for the score and a 14-13 edge.

“That was a short route – like a 2-yard route, but Jason caught the ball and was able to elude the first tackle and ran for quite a few yards after that,” McGuire said. “The ball was in the air for 10 to 12 yards and Jason did the rest of the work from there. It was a great move on his part. He went up and got the ball and did a nice job.”

The Foxes held on the next Sycamore possession, but Donovan Smith ripped off a 49-yard punt. Yorkville got only 1 yard on the next possession, then a bad punt gave the Spartans the ball on the Yorkville 40. On third-and-10 from the 20, Ty Sulaver hit Jordan Tolzin on a streak for a touchdown. Sulaver then found Smith for the two-point conversion and the seven-point lead with 3:19 left.

“We’ve been in close situations before,” Peloquin said. “It’s just like any other game. We have to hunker down and figure out our best options and formations. We just came together and did a great job.”

The Sycamore defense followed with a three-and-out, but Yorkville answered with a shutdown of their own, getting the ball back with 2:32 left on

The Foxes scored first in the contest when Liaromatis went 3 yards on a bootleg on third-and-1 on the first play of the second quarter. Sycamore answered with a 6-minute drive, capped by a 24-yard pass from Sulaver to Tolzin on fourth-and-9 to tie the score.

“We just took the shots when we had them, and Jordan made some great catches tonight,” Ryan said. “In games like this that are tight, your playmakers need to make plays. And I

Late in the third, Peloquin recovered a fumble on the Sycamore 16, giving the Spartans a short field. On the last play of the quarter, Peyton Wiegmann dove in from 1 yard out on fourth-and-goal to give the Spartans a 13-7 lead.

“It was a grind-it-out game,” Ryan said. “They are so physical on defense.

They are so good on defense, and they run the ball. It was just a grind-outgame, and it showed a lot of character to get the win, especially after they went up, 14-13, in the fourth quarter.”

Wiegmann, playing in place of injured starter Chris Pawola, had 21 carries for 74 yards. Sulaver was 13 for 23

for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

Austin Avery led the Foxes with 66 yards on 11 carries.

Yorkville will now prepare for a road trip to DeKalb (6-1) on Friday.

Northern Illinois commit Derek Kyler led the Barbs to a 42-0 shutout win over Ottawa in Week 7, as the Barbs quarterback finished with 46 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and an additional 59 yards passing for two more scores.

“We’re not built for a fast strike.

We’re not a team that’s going to score in one play. Typically, we’re a team that needs to grind things out,” McGuire said. “Our margin of error is very slim, so turnovers, penalties, missed tackles, drops – all those things, for us, are magnified by the way we’re built.

We just have to be more mistake-free and I think good things will happen.

We’ve got to embrace that. There’s a lot of good things out of that and just limit our mistakes.”
