Very sadly, breast cancer and so many other forms of cancer have touched so many of us. I imagine it would be difficult to find any adult who has not been directly affected in some way by this most insidious of diseases. All too many of us have had a spouse, a parent, other family member, close friend or colleague who have had to wage the hard, brave fight against cancer.

I think it’s giving up too much of our autonomy to foreign jurisdiction, foreign court authority that I think is risky, and I just think we can do better. The reason I say ‘in its current form’ is, I still am supportive of trade. I am not an isolationist. I do not think we should just close our borders down.”

John Laesch of Aurora, who has been active in opposing the TPP, thanked Hultgren for his open forum and for his stance on the issue.

“I’m thrilled about what you’re saying about the TPP,” Laesch said. “I genuinely appreciate your open forum and the way that your staff has treated us. I think having these discussions is more than most members of Congress are doing, Democrat or Republican, and I think that helps.”

Hultgren also discussed veterans’ issues, including ongoing problems with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He offered to let his office or the Veterans Assistance Commission

know if a veteran is having problems.

“These people are here to help, they’re here to cut through the red tape,” he said. “They’re here to get things done. And we want to do the same thing. That’s our first, primary focus.”

Laschober said veterans’ disability claims have been moving faster through the VA system recently, but there are more claims than just disability claims, including pension claims and burial claims, and there are only three places in the U.S. that process those claims.

Laschober said Congress also should focus on hiring more staff “to have an efficiently running Department of Veterans Affairs to do said claims.”

A resident at the meeting said he had read that illegal immigrants get better health care than veterans. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has made such claims during his campaign, most recently during a Sept. 7 speech in Philadelphia.

“Our veterans, in many cases, are

being treated worse than illegal immigrants,” he said, according to national media reports.

Hultgren said such a claim isn’t true.

“I don’t think that’s true,” he said.

“That illegal immigrants are getting better care than our veterans, I don’t think that’s true. I don’t know where that came from.”

Hultgren said there have been some reforms, but there is “more that needs to happen.” He praised the VA for the experience he has had with his own father.

“My dad’s a veteran, and so grateful for the VA,” he said. “Hines has been really good to him and also [James] Lovell [Federal Health Care Center] in North Chicago has been really great.

And to me, that’s one of those that really is a model: a joint VA and DOD facility relationship with Lovell. But almost everything we’ve heard has been very positive. The quality of care is unbelievable. All the resources for our veterans are right there.”

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren talked trade, veterans’ issues and taxes during a town hall with constituents Monday afternoon at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville.

Hultgren, R-Plano, spoke with the group of residents from areas that included Yorkville, Oswego, Aurora, Sugar Grove, Plainfield, North Aurora, Batavia, Warrenville, McHenry, Sleepy Hollow and Orland Park.

Also attending the meeting were Chad Lockman, superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission of Kendall County; Olivia Laschober, assistant superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission of Kendall County; and Michael Iwanicki, superintendent of the McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission.

During the meeting, some in the audience pressed Hultgren on trade and whether he supports the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, agreement. He also was asked if the agreement would be addressed or voted on during Congress’s “lame duck” session after the Nov. 8 election and the swearing-in of a new Congress in January.

Hultgren said he doesn’t foresee the issue being addressed or voted on, or being passed, during the lame duck session, giving it a single-digit percentage chance.

For his part, Hultgren said he opposes the TPP as it is written currently, but said he isn’t opposed to trade agreements and could change his mind if certain elements of the agreement are changed.

“Where it is right now, if it came up for a vote tomorrow or when we come back in November, I wouldn’t support it; I couldn’t support it,” he said. “The

Even though Christmas items have slowly begun appearing in the myriad catalogs we get here at the Matile Manse, the progress has thankfully been extremely gradual, mostly consisting of a holly leaf or wreath-like graphic on the cover.

Here at Junk Mail Central, though, we’ve been ignoring all that and trying to keep the piles of the stuff separate from the piles of leaves that are starting to build up. Junk mail is slightly more valuable than fallen leaves since you can read junk mail in the morning while eating cereal, while leaves on the table may be colorful but they just don’t impart much in the way of information.

So, while we’re waiting for Halloween trick-or-treaters to get their costumes finalized, and we shop for the very best place to buy our Thanksgiving turkey, and dream of pumpkin pie, I thought I’d process some of the junk mail I finished reading this morning over oatmeal at breakfast. We all want to live in a community that we can call excellent. We want a community that is responsive and fulfills our need for public services, education, recreation and social interaction. In the Fox Valley we are fortunate to have municipalities that strive for excellence every day. However, reaching the goal of excellence is not easy today, as economic forces over the last 20 years have put unprecedented demands on municipal leaders, staffs, employees, budgets, and infrastructure.

The challenge in today’s economy is for municipalities to optimize individual and department performance while maintaining or reducing costs. Because Waubonsee’s Workforce Development Department works with organizations to optimize performance, we thought our capabilities would be perfect to help municipalities address current challenges and create efficiencies.

That’s why, in 2013, representatives from Waubonsee met with local municipal leaders and asked what

Since its inception, Communities of Excellence has become a national award-winning leadership program for public sector employees to develop professional skills that can assist in career growth and help local governments meet ongoing challenges.

We are proud that the design of our Communities of Excellence program was a team effort with district municipalities. The training objectives and logistics of the program were all structured with input from municipal

leaders. Some program requirements requested by municipalities include: • Training should be a maximum of four hours in length, held once per week from 8 a.m. to noon • A variety of topics should be covered • Material must be relevant and immediately applicable • Training must contain a group activity and peer interaction • Training must incorporate networking opportunities, benchmarking of ideas and the sharing of best practices The curriculum in the Communities of Excellence program is as diverse as its participants. Topics include leadership, communication, government operations, working with generations, budgeting, time management and others. To date, participants represent 14 municipal departments that include administration, city clerk, customer service, fire, finance, human resources, parks and public works.

Sheriff’s office investigating Bristol Twp. home invasion SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a home invasion that occurred at approximately 10:44 a.m. Sept. 27 at a residence in the 0-30 block of Park Lane in Bristol Township.

Police said a complainant reported that while they were inside of their garage a white SUV occupied by three males drove into the driveway. An unknown white male with a bald head exited the SUV, entered the garage, and allegedly pointed a handgun at the complainant. The male then exited the garage without saying or taking anything and the SUV departed the area toward Galena Road.

Police said the driver was de-

scribed as a white male with short dark hair and possibly a goatee.

There was no description of the third male in the SUV. The SUV possibly contained the number 7 toward the end of the license plate number.

Deputies investigated the incident and spoke with residents in the area; however the alleged offenders have not been located. There were no injuries reported and this incident is still being investigated.

Police said the incident appears to be isolated.

The Yorkville boys’ golf team opened the postseason on Tuesday at the Class 3A West Aurora Regional at Orchard Valley and put one individual through to the Oswego Sectional.

Aidan Miragliotta shot an 83 to finish among the top 10 individuals and will represent Yorkville on Monday at Blackberry Oaks.

On Sept. 28, Yorkville traveled to Seneca Oaks for the NIB12 Conference tournament and took seventh place with a 348. Miragliotta shot an 83 to finish 15th overall, and Alex Burks had a season-best 78 to finish fourth individually. Based on his conference match play and tournament finish, Miragliotta earned All-Conference honors.

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville football coach Dan McGuire understands the importance in a team’s strength of schedule – especially when it comes to preparing the Foxes for a grueling Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference season.

Sterling – one of four remaining undefeated teams in Class 5A – sealed its playoff bid and set up a NIB12 West Division championship game this week against Rochelle with a 41-0 shutout against Yorkville last Friday.

Now 1-5 overall, Yorkville’s season comes down to its final three games, beginning with Friday night’s Homecoming contest against Sycamore (3-3) in NIB12 East Division play.

“We need to get a win, and any win we can get on our schedule is going to be a good one,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “We’re just trying to correct some mistakes we’ve made and go from there. ... We try to hang our hats on having success in the field and we really have to work towards that at the end of the year and win these next three games because we know these seniors want to win games. That’s what our sole focus is on.”

Sycamore comes into the game on a two-game win streak after a 19-0 win over Kaneland to hand the Knights their first shutout loss of the season.

Sycamore is led by quarterback Tyler Sulaver, who has 785 yards passing on 56 of 103 completions for seven touchdowns with two interceptions. His targets are Jordan Tolzin (17 catches, 248 yards) and Chris Powala (16 catches, 189 yards). Powala also has 83 carries for 512 yards and eight touchdowns.

Freshman Kait Natividad may have underestimated herself in her debut season with the Yorkville golf team.

Natividad put an exclamation mark on the end of the regular season by winning the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference championship with a round of 74 at Fairways Golf Course in Rochelle on Sept. 27 – finishing 13 strokes ahead of the runner-up from Geneseo.

Starting on Hole 3, Natividad had a strong start through the front nine and hung tough despite windy conditions as the tournament progressed.

“Hole 16 she tripled, but then in true Kait fashion came back and birdied the next hole,” Yorville coach Kristen Frantzen said. “She’s just an unbelievable player.”

Yorkville counted other scores from Avery Pottinger (112), Naya Campbell (114) and Livy Dearborn (117).

Yorkville was slated to enter the Plainfield North Regional at Nettle Creek in Morris on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

“We have a very young team with just one senior, so I think the regional experience is going to be great for those continuing through the program and getting them used to bigger competition,” Frantzen said. “With Kait, she

is a true golfer and knows when to turn it on and it’ll be awesome to see her with other golfers at her caliber. I’m really excited to see the postseason.”

Sectional qualifiers advance to the Lockport Sectional at Broken Arrow on Monday at 9 a.m.

“One of the first days of practice, I asked Kait, “What’s your goal for the year?” And she said she just really wants to get out of regionals,” Frantzen said. “She has potential to be a state qualifier as a freshman. We’re just really excited. She is going to tear it up and have an unbelievable round [at Nettle Creek].”

Yorkville stakes 2-1 lead, improves to 12-1-2 with big win

That’s something that’s sometimes easier to say than do, and Sycamore found that out the hard way during Thursday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference game at Yorkville.

The Foxes defeated the Spartans, 5-1, avenging their lone loss of the season.

“The guys felt pretty bitter about that loss earlier and last year Sycamore won conference,” Yorkville coach Andrew Johnson said. “We went down early, but then the guys slowed the game down and played the nice style they’ve been playing lately and it worked.”

Yorkville (12-1-2, 3-1-1) was dominating play, but only clinging to a 2-1 lead in the second half before Sycamore (118-1, 3-2-0) proved unable to clear the ball out of the dangerous penalty area.

A lot of that had to do with Yorkville junior Jackson Torok, who fought for and acquired possession before tapping a pass to senior Bailey Kish. Kish finished with 30:50 remaining in the game.

That insurance goal never would be needed, but it certainly gave the Foxes additional comfort.

“It felt like the ball was sitting there for a while and I just took it off of Jackson’s foot, spun around and put it in,” Kish said. “As an attacker, when you see their furthest guy back swing and miss at the 18, you know it’s your chance to take that and that’s what I did.”

The Spartans only had a single shot on goal in the first half, but they made the most of it as junior Matthew Coulibaly scored with 23:36 remaining before halftime.

Meanwhile, the Foxes had been peppering Sycamore junior keeper Patrik Smith with shots coming from Torok, Kish and senior Bobby Reichert before senior Wyatt McKibbon netted the equalizer with 11:47 left before the break.

Junior Mario Hinojosa set up McKibbon as his cross went to junior Jeremy Schwarz before landing near McKibbon’s feet.

“They got that first one and we’ve only had to come from behind once or twice this year, but we stayed positive,” McKibbon said. “We’ve been playing

Wasting little time – about two minutes to be precise – the Foxes took the lead for good thanks to sophomore Alex Barrientos.

His shot was slowed by Smith, but continued to pursue its destination of the goal line. Sycamore senior defender Joseph O’Brien made an outstanding diving effort to try to save it but booted the ball away just as it crossed the goal line.

Smith and the Spartans did their

part to keep the Foxes from extending their lead for most of the remainder of the second half, but with all their attention on defense, they weren’t able to put any pressure on the other side of the field to try to cut into their deficit.

The Foxes scored twice in the final seven minutes. McKibbon made a steal and sent a pass to Torok who finished with 6:34 remaining before senior Charlie Williams scored with 6.8 seconds left.

Yorkville’s next game arrives on Oct. 6 with a road trip to Kaneland.

The Foxes received the No. 6 seed in the 19-team Bolingbrook Sectional.

Regional assignments, which include sites at Oswego, Metea Valley, Lockport and Geneva, are expected to be released by the IHSA on Friday.
