KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Officials with the nonprofit Chapel on the Green have announced that their historic 1855 church building in Yorkville has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation.

The agency is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archaeological resources. The Register’s properties have significance to the history of their community state or the nation.

Listing in the National Register of Historic Places provides formal recognition of a property’s historical, archi-

tectural, or archaeological significance based on national standards used by every state. The Register is administered by the National Park Service (an agency within the United States Department of the Interior).

The Chapel on the Green is a notprofit organization whose primary goal is the preservation of the building which was built at 107 W. Main Street in 1855. Originally named the Bristol Congregational Church, the New England style building features stained glass windows and an 1899 pipe organ that is still in use today.

The Chapel hosts weddings and other ceremonies and programs and is the home of Boy Scout Troop 40 and the Treasure Breads, Inc. Board members of the Chapel play a role in overseeing the care and mainte-

nance of the building, and participate in projects and events throughout the year. Membership is open to anyone who has in interest in history and preservation, and may have skills beneficial to the organization’s mission.

There are now 10 Kendall County entries on the National Register which include three in Yorkville: the first court house, the Parkview Christian Academy (originally the Yorkville High School), and the Chapel on the Green.

The next event at the Chapel is this Sunday, Oct. 2: Early Farm Life in Iowa. It is a free program, but donations for the upkeep of the Chapel are always appreciated.

Restrictions would curb home rule power

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com If Yorkville residents approve making the city a home rule community via a referendum on the November ballot, the city will have a set of restrictions included in a measure approved unanimously by the City Council Tuesday evening.

The council’s four-member Administration Committee has been discussing the home rule policy. Alderman Joel Frieders, vice chairman of that committee, said the policy will ensure that future city officials will adhere to certain restrictions.

“Out of all the discussions I’ve had with everyone, they’re not afraid of us sitting here right now; they’re afraid of interpretations of us the next eight, 12, 15, 16 years,” he said. “I just want to make sure that we don’t make it a simple swipe of the pen to reaffirm a lot of the home rule powers.”

The policy is similar to that enacted by the city of Woodstock, according to a memo from City Administrator Bart Olson to the City Council. Frieders said the rule is “a really good basis, but I wouldn’t mind going a little bit stronger.”

Alderman Carlo Colosimo explained that the restrictions would essentially require the city follow the same nonhome rule process as they do currently when seeking a tax increase, if the home rule referendum is approved.

A resolution approved unanimously Tuesday – Alderman Seaver Tarulis was not present – outlines various restrictions and states that if the referendum is approved the mayor and City Council agree “to pledge to exercise any of the home rule powers only to the

extent deemed necessary with a view to the long term impact upon the community and with specific limitations on the power to tax and the power to incur debt.”

The restrictions include: • Prior to adopting any new tax or increasing an existing tax that is not authorized under the Illinois Municipal Code for non-home rule communities, city officials must schedule a public hearing on the proposed tax, and that the city publish notice no less than 14 days before the hearing.

• Any property tax levy shall not contain an increase that exceeds the tax cap law, or Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (PTELL). “However, that the City Council may deem, in its sole discretion, that an emergency financial condition exists, in which case the (PTELL restriction) would not apply during such emergency period. Any tax adjustments instituted in order to address any such emergency would thereafter be included within the determination of the base tax levy subject to applicable future PTELL limitations.”

• The city will not issue any debt that will cause the city to exceed the debt limitation of 8.625 percent of the equalized assessed value (EAV) of all the properties within the city limits.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Gary Golinski outlined eight things the city could complete if home rule status is approved, citing a memo from Olson to aldermen. The proposals included: • An improvement on the city’s bond rating. Olson wrote that, “Bond rating agencies are now including home rule/ non-home rule designation as a major component of a factor related to financial flexibility in bond ratings.” Such improvements could save the city inter-

est, Olson wrote.

• The city could incur debt beyond a 20-year time frame, extending payments for more years to match the life span of a project. Golinski said an example is the potential for a new Fox River water intake system. “If we’re going to spend $60 million on a project, it makes more sense to be able to debt it out over the useful life of it,” he said.

• Reduce property tax burden on residents by shifting the burden to outof-town visitors, by using amusement taxes or food and beverage taxes, for example. “That’s what most municipalities use the home rule for,” Golinski said.

• Keep the City Council at its current size. Golinski said the city could be faced with a statutory requirement to increase the number of aldermen following the 2020 census.

• Administrative adjudication hearings. Golinski said being home rule would allow the city to reduce its required number of administrative adjudication hearings, which would save the city money.

• Reduce default speed limit to 25 mph in neighborhoods. Golinski said home rule status would allow the city to change the default speed limit from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour in residential neighborhoods.

• Opt out of unfunded state mandates. Golinski said home rule status would allow the city to opt out of such mandates.

• Modify the zoning and planning process. Golinski said the city would be able to address tenant issues, such as the recent mold complaints by tenants at a local apartment complex, if it had home rule powers. “Our hands were very tied on that,” he said.

Kanute grew up in Geneva, graduating from Marmion Military Academy in Aurora where he excelled in swimming and cross country. He graduated from the University of Arizona and now lives in Tucson, Ariz., where he trains as a full-time professional triathlete.

Yorkville’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Knights of Columbus are hosting Fall Fest this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Riverfront Park, 131 E. Hydraulic Ave. in Yorkville.

First-grade students at Bristol Bay Elementary School got an Olympic-sized treat on Sept. 21 as U.S. Olympic Team triathlete Ben Kanute talked to them about his experience at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio in August.

The youngsters peppered Kanute with questions about what a triathlon is, what he does to prepare for a race, how fast he can swim, how fast he can bike (50 miles per hour, downhill), how long he’s ever run (20 miles), and other topics. Kanute, 23, told them he has been competing in triathlons since he was eight years old.

An Olympic-distance triathlon includes 1.5 kilometers (approximately one mile) of swimming, 40 kilometers (approximately 25 miles) of cycling and 10 kilometers (approximately six miles) of running, according to the U.S. Olympics website. The competitors have no “rest” time in between, and that “transition time” is accounted for in the final race time, according to the Olympics.

When Kanute told them he and other Olympians received free McDonald’s, since they were a sponsor, the first graders gasped. But alas, since the lines were so long, Kanute said he was unable to get his free McDonald’s.

Kanute said he enjoyed taking questions from the students.

“It was great; they had great questions,” he said. “It was a lot of fun, because I only have so much to say and it helps to have them ask me questions.”

Bristol Bay first-grade teacher Brittney Hutchinson, who organized Kanute’s appearance, said she has been friends with Kanute since they were young. She has been tracking his recent progress and success on social media.

“Once he qualified and he knew he was going, that’s when I got my first teaching job and I thought, I have a friend in the Olympics, how cool would it be to have him speak to my classroom?” she said.

Hutchinson said her students were “so excited” about Kanute’s appearance.

“I sent a note home, if you want to wear red, white and blue today, you can,” she said. “They’ve been excited all day. I think they really got a lot out of it. He did start when he was 8 years old, when he was this little and you can start something when you are this little and really dream about it, and keep going with it. You can accomplish your goals and travel around the world and you can do all these fun things.”

Voters need to maintain interest through April election The nation has yet to get through the fall election, but our readers may have noticed in our pages over the past few weeks notices about another election on our collective horizon: the April 4, 2017 local election.

Effective Sept. 20, candidates interested in seeking election to local municipal, school, township and elective park and library district boards can now circulate petitions to have their names placed as candidates on local ballots next spring. The filing period for candidate petitions will be Dec. 12-16 at the appropriate local govern-

mental office.

While the November election is certainly critical to the future of our nation, our national security and the State of Illinois, next April’s balloting will be critical to Kendall County, its communities and residents. The candidates who file petitions in December and gain election in April will join those who will set policies that will shape local communities in the coming years while approving budgets that affect your annual property tax bill.

Based on historic voter turnout data here in the county, however, far, far

fewer ballots will be cast next spring as compared to this November. For example, in the November 2012 presidential election just over 69 percent of all of the county’s registered voters cast ballots, but in the local election the following April just 11.5 percent of all voters participated.

The Nov. 8 election is important to our nation and the state, but given the concerns we hear over and over from residents about taxes, schools, highways and other local issues we would hope more people will choose to maintain their interest in electoral politics

beyond this fall’s voting. Better yet, we would encourage those with the time and the desire to serve their communities to consider running for one of the many local elective offices next spring.

There is no financial reward for serving on your local school, park or library board. And most of those who serve on a city council or village board receive a comparatively modest compensation for their efforts. But the rewards for holding a local office come in the form of having a direct say over policy, budget decisions and ultimately a real impact on the community served.

Not just marketing: Six flags really have flown over Illinois Kids of all ages have been having exciting times at Six Flags Great America ever since the place opened up in Gurnee back in the Bicentennial year of 1976.

Amusement parks and I don’t get along, so I’ve never been there, but both my kids made it there several times during their teenage years.

But I imagine neither they, nor the hordes of other visitors, ever thought about that “Six Flags” in the park’s name. Turns out, while the name originated with the park’s current corporate owners down in Texas, it’s not just a marketing ploy.

Six flags really have flown over northern Illinois during the past 300plus years.

Drive or walk around anywhere in the Fox Valley, and you’ll see many a flagpole with the U.S. Flag proudly waving in the breeze on crisp autumn days in front of homes and public building in the area. But the Stars and Stripes is only the last in a long line of banners to fly over the region between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.

If the Native People living here had had a flag, they would have had it proudly flying in front of their public buildings when Marquette and Jolliet arrived in the area in 1673. Alas, the members of the Illiniwek Tribe had no flags and no comprehension of what was about to befall them as the first Europeans pushed into Illinois with imperialism on their minds.

The first white man to bring a flag with him was Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle. La Salle tried to colonize the area in 1679. But due to a series of mishaps, including the loss of his ship, the Griffin, on Lake

But then, with statehood in 1818 came the sixth and final flag to fly over the Fox Valley, the Illinois state flag. And here we are today.

Latest anti-gun ploy

To the Editor: Forum readers: next time you see or hear the phrase “gun safety,” please be alert. How the phrase is used could have little to do with actual gun safety.

It could be the anti-gunners’ latest propaganda ploy aimed at our 2nd Amendment’s right to bear arms.

Gun control activists now use the phrase “gun safety” instead of “gun control” in all their rhetoric about this topic.

The intended conspiracy: deceive unwary gun owners/supporters into accepting soft-sounding “gun safety” schemes that otherwise would be rejected if the phrase “gun control” was used. Democrat Ed Washak promoted “gun safety” in a recent Forum. Hillary Clinton uses it now, too, as does Obama, Reid, Feinstein, Schumer, Durbin, Pelosi and other gun controllers.

Law-abiding gun owners cherish – and demand to retain – their Constitutional right to bear arms.

Gun control activists threaten these rights, which is why “control” has become a no-no word to gun owners.

That’s why propagandists now spin being for “gun safety” and against ”gun control”. A menacing companion to their “safety” ploy is the threatening Everytown for Gun Safety ruse.

Washak downplays Everytown simply as “an advocate group”. “An advocate group”, indeed. Actually, Everytown was organized and funded in April 2006 by former NYC billionaire mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg’s proven primary use for Everytown is as his front to promote strict gun control agendas, to lobby Congress, to oppose important pro-gun reforms and...and to support new federal gun control restrictions.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) says Bloomberg’s group is not “only concerned with ‘illegal’ guns’ but is actually ‘anti-gun’”.

The NRA’s website lists 73 mayors that have quit Bloomberg’s campaign, including 15 in Pennsylvania.

Mayor Mary Wolf of Williamsport, Penn., for example, resigned because she thought “the organization was attempting to erode all gun ownership, not just illegal guns.”

John Tkazik, mayor of Poughkeepsie, New York resigned because “It did not take long to realize that...Bloomberg intended to promote confiscation of

guns from law-abiding citizens.”

Obama has moved aggressively to confiscate guns from Americans. Bad news. Recall Hitler’s “final solution of the Jewish question” mass murders?

German citizens, including Jews, were rendered helpless after their firearms were confiscated. I’m not suggesting this could happen in USA. But good people, rendered helpless, are history’s victims.

Referendum asks voters for higher tax rate District missing out on state funds, officials say SHAW MEDIA

The Newark Grade School District 66 Board of Education will have a referendum on the Nov. 8 ballot asking voters for permission to increase the limiting rate on the district’s property taxes.

Since 1997, Newark Grade School has operated under the Property Tax Extension Law Limit (PTELL) sometimes called the tax cap. This means that property taxes can increase by 5 percent or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) each year – whichever is the lesser.

Since 1997, the highest property tax increase using CPI was 4.1 percent in 2007. (The following year it was .1 percent). This year the CPI will be 0.7 percent.

Over the last 18 years, the allowable property tax increase has averaged a 2.24 percent increase per year in PTELL districts such as Newark Grade School

Filing period announced for Newark school board candidates Nominating petition forms for the April 4, 2017, school board election in Newark Community Consolidated Grade School District 66 are now available. Forms may be picked up at either the Kendall or LaSalle County Clerk’s Office.

Thus, the district’s allowable increase has been less than half that of neighboring districts for the last 18 years.  Currently Newark Grade School District 66 spends in total operational costs $8,889 per student with the state average being $12,521, according to a statement released by the district.

The statement continues: “Our Operating Tax Rate for last year was 2.26 per $100,000. The state average Operating Tax Rate is 3.52. The Operating Tax Rate for Newark Grade School District 66 pays for 78 percent of everything in

While that sounds like a good amount of money generated through local dollars consider this – we rank 333 out of 375 grade school districts in Operating Tax Rate. This puts us in the bottom 11 percent of districts in the state for amount in tax levies and that makes the state believe that we are a wealthy district. Wealthy districts receive less state and federal funding.�

The statement adds: “Newark Grade School District 66’s last property tax referendum was 1972. We are proposing a .7 percent increase in the Lim-

iting Rate. (That number is point 7 percent – not 70%.) Why .7 percent?

According to multiple sources, if we increase our Education Fund local taxes by that number, we will be seen as a not-so-wealthy district. Again, this allows us state funding.�

The statement continues, “We want our learning community to know that we have been fiscally responsible while continuing to serve our students. Yearly, we have State Financial Consultant Mark Anderson look at our spending and offer ways that we can improve.

This year, Anderson stated, ‘(Newark Grade School District 66) is running as efficiently as you possibly can.’ That is a statement of which we are proud. “ The statement concludes: “At Newark Grade School District 66 we believe we have the best to offer in school services at a highly competitive rate.

Three windows will be replaced at the Kendall County Historic Courthouse at a cost of $39,500, after the County Board unanimously approved the project.

The board has hired Patrick McCann, Inc., of Geneva to complete the project

by May 1 of next year.

The building served as the county’s main judicial building until the current courthouse was built in 1998.

The original building was constructed in 1864, but was destroyed by fire. A new, replica version was built in 1887.

After falling into disrepair in the 1990s, county officials considered demolishing the building, but former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert secured funding for the building’s restoration.

The restoration was funded in part by former Gov. George Ryan’s Illinois FIRST program.

Yorkville Intermediate School is scheduled to receive recognition at the next meeting on Oct. 24.

While unrelated to the Bristol recognition, the board took time to acknowledge teacher Kimber Larson for her leadership and participation on the Illinois State Board of Education Partnership for Educator Preparation Program (PEP).

Since May, Larson has served as a teacher representative on the PEP committee that is comprised of K-12 teachers, district administrators and higher education faculty from colleges of education across Illinois.

The committee is developing a framework for teacher preparation that ensures future teachers in Illinois are ready to teach on the first day of employment.

“The goal is to measure the framework for teacher preparation so that all future educators are well prepared with coursework and studies so they’re ready to teach on the first day of school,” said Yorkville Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Nick Baughman.

The Friends of the Yorkville Public Library will host the fourth annual Mini-Golf FUN Raiser on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This family event will include 18 holes of mini-golf played throughout both floors of the library. All proceeds will benefit the library and will be used for children’s programs and the purchase of books.

Morris Hospital offers a medication dispensing program to help with medication management.

Missing a dose, taking too much, or taking medication at the wrong time can lead to risky side effects that could result in admission to the hospital, increased health care costs, and the need to enhance home care support. 40% of nursing home admissions are associated with medication non-adherence.

For a nominal monthly fee, subscribers to Morris Hospital’s medication dispensing program receive a medication dispensing unit that can hold 60 medication cups, accommodate 40 days of medicine, and hold up to 6 doses per day. The unit dispenses pre-loaded doses at the scheduled time with the press of a single button. Audible reminders and visual prompts provide specific instructions, such as “take with food” and “check blood sugar levels”, and a locked cabinet helps prevent inappropriate access and accidental overdoses. The dispenser is connected to the

patient’s telephone line; if a medication isn’t taken within 90 minutes after a reminder, a call is made to the caregiver.

“The main benefit of our dispenser program is that it allows seniors to remain safely and independently in their own homes,” said Cindy Dupler, Medication Dispenser Representative at Morris Hospital. “We can also help patients with complex medical regimens avoid errors that could lead to medical complications or unplanned hospitalizations. It reduces accidental dosing errors when no one is there to help, and it reduces anxiety for caregivers.”

Dupler delivers and installs the dispenser in the home, and trains a caregiver how to operate, load, and troubleshoot the unit. Thanks to a bequest to the Morris Hospital Foundation, funding is available to those needing financial assistance.

“The Medication Dispensing program is easy and effective, and has been proven to deliver a 98.6% in-home adherence level among monitored program subscribers,” added Dupler.

The Yorkville School District Board recognized Bristol Grade School during their meeting Monday evening.

Every month throughout the remainder of the school year, the board will set aside time to celebrate one of its school’s accomplishments by providing a Heart of the Fox presentation.

These will highlight one or more of the student-led initiatives that are ongoing at district schools.

Bristol Grade School representatives provided the board with details of its HeroTime and Superhero Squads programming.

Principal Kathryn Schafermeyer introduced Jake Austin, a physical education teacher, who led the presentation along with a handful of students.

“Each month we talk about one of our Bristol traits,” Austin said. “Most recently we talked about “brave” and next we’ll talk about “respect.”

Students performed sign language to show the different traits to the board and public, which spell out Bristol, beginning with ‘B’ for brave and followed by respect, integrity, self-con-

trol, thoughtful, original and loyal.

This is all part of the Everyday Superheroes theme, which helps bring the students together around a centralized idea that enhances the learning experience.

It was explained that students are recognized and celebrated during HeroTime on Fridays. Superhero Squads work together on service-learning projects that are focused on how they can be heroes within their own community.

Liz Spillane, whose daughter Julie is a second grade student at Bristol, said she’s seeing the impact of the initiatives at home and within her neighborhood.

“I noticed just from the children on our street--and 90 percent of the kids go to Bristol--is that they’re very community-minded,” she said. “They’re constantly setting up stores and selling bracelets to give back to charity.

They’re mentioning the traits and Hero Time and want everyone to know so it’s rippling into their lives.”

Spillane continued, “If their families don’t do a lot of community experience, they don’t get exposed until their older, but now we’ve got kids from preschool and up that are learning how to

BRIEFS Yorkville man charged with criminal sexual assault

A Yorkville man was arrested Thursday on an outstanding warrant for criminal sexual assault.

Yorkville police reported that Brian G. Murison, 37, of the 300 block of Olsen St., has been charged with three counts of criminal sexual assault stemming Brian G. from an investigation by Murison Yorkville police.

Murison was taken into custody without incident, police said, and was being held at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville on a $75,000 bond.

Public unveiling ceremony for courthouse mural Oct. 4

A public unveiling ceremony for the new mural at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville will take place next Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 4:30 p.m.

The courthouse, at 807 W. John St. in Yorkville, will be open that evening past its usual hours, until 7 p.m., so the public has a chance to view the mural after the unveiling ceremony.

The mural will reflect the spirit of the county, including its agricultural roots, according to the artist.

The Yorkville Garden Club will gather for their regular club meeting Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at 215 Hillcrest Ave. in Yorkville. The public is invited to attend.

Lynda Cox will coordinate the program featuring tablescapes designed by several club members.

Kendall County Board Chairman John Shaw, Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird and Commander Mike Peters attended a meeting on combating heroin in Illinois with other government officials from the 14th Congressional District of Illinois on Aug. 30.

The meeting was led by 14th District Congressman Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, and officials participated in a discussion which featured updates on the heroin problem and the progress being made to combat the problem. There was an update on the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA), which was signed into law by President Barack Obama on July 22.

CARA authorizes the Attorney General and Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to ad-

dress the prescription opioid abuse and heroin use crisis. CARA has a section dedicated to law enforcement and treatment which provides grants for law enforcement officers to be trained to help combat opioid abuse and heroin use.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies are aware of the heroin crisis and have been trained to identify situations involving opioid overdoses. The patrol deputies carry and are trained to administer intranasal naloxone, commonly known as Narcan. Narcan is administered to help reverse the effects of opioids such as heroin, methadone and oxycodone.

“On occasions, deputies have saved lives by administering Narcan. The passage of CARA will hopefully allow deputies to continue to have the most up-to-date training and life-saving techniques available to help combat opioid abuse and heroin use,” said Baird.

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Plano man has been sentenced to six years in state prison for selling heroin within 500 feet of Plano High School.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Wednesday that Allen Carreon, 31, of the 500 block of West Lee Street in Plano was sentenced by Judge Timothy McCann to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a public school after pleading guilty.

According to Weis, Carreon had sold heroin to an undercover police officer with the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team, or CPAT, on numerous occasions at various locations in Kendall County. One of those

heroin deliveries occurred within 500 feet of Plano High School, Weis said.

Weis said he commended the work of Kendall CPAT “for their efforts in taking another distributor of heroin off the streets of Kendall County.”

“Based on information we were able to obtain, Carreon was selling heroin in part to further his own heroin use,” Weis said. “The fact that he chose to deal heroin near a high Allen school where children Carreon are at shows the depths people will go with heroin use and sales.”

Weis said there was no evidence that the Carreon was selling heroin to children at the high school.

After his release from prison, Carreon will be required to serve three years of mandatory supervised release, Weis said.

Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Gorup prosecuted the case, and attorney Brian Erwin represented Carreon.

met Oswego at Blackberry Oaks for a Ryder Cup style match and the Panthers won 14 of the 16 pairings in the final match of the regular season.

Yorkville Girls: The Foxes lost to Plainfield East 222-236. Scoring for the Foxes were, Kait Natividad (45), Livy Dearborn (58), Nicole Doles (64) and Naya Campbell (69).

Yorkville lost to Oswego 177-213.

Top scorer Kait Natividad carded a 39 followed by Dearborn (54) Avery Pottinger (57) and Abby Huelhorst (63).

Newark Boys: The Norsemen defeated Plano 181-187 on Tuesday at Cedardell behind scores from Corey Jacobson (41), Connor Baker (42), Brett Myre (48) and Cam Myre (50).

IMSA/Yorkville co-op: The team won the Elk Grove Invite with a score of 596 points to finish ahead of runner-up West Aurora (427).

Five meet records were broken by the IMSA/Yorkville co-op team.

The 200-medley relay team of Linnea Lee-Brown, Colleen O’Conner, Lindy Hong and Brooke Jensen clocked in at 1:55.12. O’Conner also broke the 200 IM record (2:16.71) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.83).

The 200 free relay team finished with a record-setting time of 1:42.14 behind the efforts of Lee-Brown, Claire Wang, Jensen and Polina Bonderenko.

Reducing background noise can help you and your loved one be better able to hear and understand each other. For someone with hearing loss, background noise provides a difficult listening environment. Even a running dishwasher contributes to background noise. Sit close to each other, and enunciate as much as possible, continuing to make eye contact. Often the issue isn’t hearing; it’s understanding what is said.

Caring for a loved one with impaired hearing can be difficult. It’s frustrating to frequently have to repeat what you say, and you can’t always be sure your message has been understood. There are several things you can do to ensure considerate and successful communication with your loved one who has difficulty hearing.

If the hearing loss is very severe, consider writing certain things down, especially specific instructions, and ask your loved one to repeat what you’ve said so you know they understood you. Sometimes those with hearing loss pretend to have heard and understood a conversation to avoid embarrassment.

During a conversation, speak face-to-face with the other person. Don’t attempt to converse from another room, or while facing another direction.

Visual clues like lip movement and facial expressions help others understand your words. It also helps to be in a well-lit area so your face is visible.

“Noise, distance, and acoustics can certainly affect all people, hearing impaired or not. It’s important to know that hearing aids do not give the user ‘bionic’ hearing. The aids are there to help the user hear the best that is possible for them.”

Don’t talk while you’re eating, reading a book, or otherwise distracted. Speak naturally, but not too fast; make a conscious effort to pronounce each word clearly. If your loved one has a hearing aid, be sure not to shout. Most instruments are programmed to amplify normal speech levels, so speaking too loudly may distort what you’re saying. In a group setting, take turns talking without interrupting.

The Yorkville boys soccer team (10-1-2) earned a 4-0 shutout win over Plainfield South on Saturday.

Twenty five minutes into the first half, Jackson Torok found the back of the net off of a beautiful no-look through ball from Wyatt McKibbon.

Later, Torok once more received a through ball from McKibbon and netted his second goal of the game. Jeremy Schwarz and Bailey Kish added goals to their season stat line, with Jake Rodgers tallying an assist.

Keeper play from Ben Schafermeyer and outstanding back line teamwork allowed Yorkville to finish with its third straight shutout and only one goal overall conceded in this week’s busy four game stretch.

Yorkville also picked up a 4-0 win over Ottawa on Sept. 22. Sophomore defenseman Alex Barrientos came up from the back line to start the scoring for the Foxes just three minutes into the game off an assist from Nick Arcara.

Five minutes later, Bobby Reichert

got into the scoring column from a nice find by McKibbon. Bronson Rodgers found Charlie Williams charging to goal and helped Williams net the third goal of the first half.

Barrientos then assisted Kish’s header goal several minutes into the second half.

Foxes’ offense stalls after Morris rallies

By ROB OESTERLE During the first half of Friday night’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener against Yorkville, the Morris football team’s offense didn’t do much as far as moving the ball.

Fortunately for the Redskins, their defense was able to give them a boost that propelled them to a 20-13 victory.

The loss is Yorkville’s third straight by seven points or less as the Foxes drop to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in NIB12 play.

“It’s definitely like Groundhog Day,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “I think the reasons are different from one game to the next. We lost our composure in the second half, had a lot of penalties [12 for 119 yards] and made some mental errors. We just have to do a better job of keeping our composure.”

Late in the first half, Yorkville owned a 13-0 lead and took over at its own 39 after stopping Morris (4-1, 1-0) on downs with 1:36 to play in the first half. Rather than run out the clock, the Foxes tried a deep pass, which Morris safety Michael Feeney intercepted at his own 41.

Feeney had a convoy of blockers set up along the left sideline and motored his way through the traffic into the end zone to pull the Redskins to within 13-6 and give them a much-needed momentum boost heading into halftime.

“Our defense was able to get it done tonight,” Feeney said about a Redskin unit that has allowed just 44 points through five games. “That play gave us some momentum for the second half, and our offensive line picked it up in the second half and our offense was able to get going a little bit.

“It was nice to have a tough game like this and get a win.”

Yorkville opened strong, taking the

opening kickoff and driving 66 yards on eight plays, capped by a 9-yard touchdown run by Trent Delaney. The conversion attempt failed, and Yorkville led 6-0.

Yorkville scored again midway through the second quarter. After an interception by Zach Haddox gave the Foxes the ball at the Morris 49, quarterback Ty Liaromatis hit Jason Lewan with a 28-yard touchdown pass and the Foxes led 13-0 following Cade Henry’s kick. Liaromatis finished with 106 yards through the air, but was intercepted three times. Delaney had a team-high 95 rushing yards for the Foxes, who were whistled for 12 penalties for 119 yards.

“Yorkville is a good team,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “They are very physical, they play hard and all of their losses are to good teams. We really had to fight, scratch and claw our way through this one and that’s a credit to how tough Yorkvillle played.”

Morris improved its offensive production in the second half and took the lead when quarterback Ricky Del Favero ran a quarterback draw up the middle for a 25-yard touchdown, then ran in the two-point conversion to put his team ahead 14-13 with 5:10 to play in the third quarter.

“We had a couple chances with the ball in our hands and just couldn’t punch one in,” McGuire said.

On Morris’ next drive, a pass interference penalty on Yorkville nullified an interception and the Redskins continued to drive, finally reaching the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run by Keagan Sobol.

“We challenged the offensive line at halftime,” Thorson said. “They came out and played a lot better in the second half. That team that played in the

Newark seals Little Ten title, eyes tourney trophy Norsemen improve to 10-1 with shutout win over Earlville-Leland

Newark soccer coach Tyler Engel and assistant Tom Fitzer seem to have found the winning combination on the field for the Newark soccer team this fall.

The Norsemen, which also co-op with Seneca, take an 10-1 record into the final week of the regular season, wrapping up the schedule with games against Hiawatha and Princeton.

“We have four seniors who have come back, and our defense has been great,” Fitzer said. “Everybody had just been stepping up. They’re coming to practice, learning, and then putting it out on the field. It’s really been amazing. I give a lot of credit not only to the players, but to coach Engel. He’s getting them to do what he’s teaching them.”

Newark’s only loss this year came at the end of a three-day stretch of games – the first three games of the year – on Aug. 24 in a 4-1 decision to Class 2A Streator.

“For soccer, that’s a lot. We could tell from the start [against Streator] that the guys were tired, but obviously they’ve rebounded well and haven’t

Yorkville was able to drive inside the Morris 10, but Sean Grogan stopped Delaney for a loss on 4th and goal from the 5 before disaster nearly struck for Morris.

Sobol tried to throw a halfback option pass, but the ball was deflected and fell into the arms of Yorkville defender Haddox, his second pick of the night, at the Redskins’ 22. Two plays later, though, Morris’ Kameron Dransfeldt picked off a pass and returned it 53 yards to the Yorkville 33. On the play,

“We’ll have some time to keep our game going and keep learning,” Fitzer said.

The Class 1A Princeton Regional features top-seeded Newark. The Norsemen will face the winner of a play-in game between No. 8 Kewanee and No. 7 Princeton. That regional semifinal game will take place on Oct. 11 in Princeton. No. 4 Somonauk and No. 6 Rock Island Alleman play in the second regional game, with the championship scheduled for Oct. 15.

“The game is at Princeton, so that could be a benefit for them if we end up playing them,” Fitzer said. “We like the way that first bracket looks.”

Morris was called for sideline interference, which resulted in Thorson being ejected as the Redskins had already been called for that infraction earlier in the game.

Yorkville will now travel to Sterling (5-0), which remained unbeaten with a 49-7 win over Geneseo on Friday.

“We have to win a game and we’re going to focus on Sterling, and let the chips fall where they may,” McGuire said. “There’s no sense in thinking about should’ve, would’ve, could’ve.

We’ve got to worry about the next game, and that’s Sterling, and that’s our focus this week.

“They have a hurry-up offense and they have lots of good athletes that spread you out a bit. They run what they run very well,” McGuire added.

“They also have a very good defense and have held some very good teams down to some low scores. Defensively, they’ve got a nice team with some good speed.”

Yorkville will enter the Naperville Twilight Invite on Oct. 5 at Naperville North. The postseason also started to come into focus for Yorkville’s debut in the Class 3A division. Yorkville is assigned to the Normal Regional at Maxwell Park, with the sectional to be held at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. The other three sectional sites include West Aurora, Marist and Niles West. “To go all the way down to Edwardsville for sectionals, it’s a big haul. I’m excited because it’s my alma mater, but for kids, it’s tough,� Muth said. “We will make the best of it and find a positive out of it. It makes the road to Detweiller a little harder and a little more stressful, but at the end of the day we’ll get the best out of the kids to put them in the best position possible.�

A narrow win over a talented Rosary team is just what the Yorkville tennis team was looking for to build momentum into the upcoming Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament.

The Foxes (12-5) pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Royals to close the regular season schedule on Monday. “We haven’t beat them in awhile,� Yorkville coach Frank Yabsley said.

Most notable, Yorkville was missing two junior players who were out with illness. Yabsley called up freshman Maddie Russelburg to fill in at No. 3 singles, and Russelburg, who typically plays No. 2 singles on the JV team, clinched the fourth point for Yorkville with her 10-7 victory. “She really came through for us,� Yabsley said. “It was really nice. We knew she was very competitive and we threw her into the varsity level and she didn’t back down one bit.�

At No. 1 singles, Ashley Hatch drew Rosary’s returning state qualifier and lost 10-5 to move to 14-2 overall. Bella Perez won 10-5 at second singles and is now 15-1 overall.

At No. 1 doubles, Sam Keane and Bri Pickering won 10-4 to improve to 12-5, and the No. 2 doubles team of Kaylee Kosulic and Maggie Romano won 10-7 to improve to 13-4 and provided Yorkville’s third point in the match.

The Palatine Invite provided the perfect setting for the Yorkville cross country team to test its pack before heading into a competitive October. “I was happy with the progress both teams made,� Yorkville coach Chris Muth said. “It’s always important to head in the right direction and I think we’re doing that.

On the girls side there was top end talent, and on the guys’ side it was ridiculous how much talent there was in the varsity race.�

The Yorkville girls had little trouble securing a first-place finish in the team standings with five runners in the top 25 to score a total of 73 points and finish ahead of Lyons Twp. (162) and Hersey (199) in the 28-team event. Nicole Greyer led the Foxes with a time of 17:24 to place sixth individually, while Alyssa Edwards (17:50) was 14th followed by Olivia Borowiak (17:55), Maddie Dearborn (18:00) and Alexis Grandys (18:09) while Emily Eberhart (18:38) rounded out the top six. “It was a pretty solid split – not

our best. We’re ultimately looking to be about a 20-25 second split off Nicole,� Muth said. “A lot of girls had some very good races. Alyssa Edwards really stepped up and hopefully that’s a trend that continues. Alexis Grandys has progressed, but she hasn’t hit her breakout yet and as soon as she does, our team is going to hit another level. I’m happy; I see progress.�

The Yorkville boys posted a 38-second split, but finished 22nd overall. Lake Zurich won the team title with 124 points followed by Kentucky’s St. Xavier (143) and Hinsdale Central (205). Ben Summers clocked in at 15:43 to lead the Foxes with a 61st place finish. Zack Price wasn’t far behind in 15:46 to take 68th. “Ben has been someone who has been a hidden gem for a long time and he’s starting to blossom into something special,� Muth said. “Zach is coming back off an injured track season, so he’s just rounding into shape.�

The Knights (20-3) broke a 15-15 tie in the decisive set and took command for a 25-20, 16-25, 25-17 victory to take the lead in the NIB12 East Division race at 4-0 over the defending conference champs.

“They were blocking us quite a bit, so moving around and adjusting our sets really helped,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett said. “It feels good to go through and win because last year we came here and lost the Yorkville match, and that hurt us. Now we just have to make adjustments and become a different team. Our conference is good, and everyone you play, you just never know.”

Kaneland took advantage of six Yorkville serving errors in Set 1, but came out flat in the next set to trail the Foxes 16-10.

We’re working to get to that tempo, but [Kaneland] is there. I can’t ask for anything more. We’re getting there and hopefully we can take a leap and not steps there.”
