By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The State of Illinois has reinstated two parks grants to the city of Yorkville that Gov. Bruce Rauner suspended more than a year ago.

The City Council unanimously approved measures at its Aug. 23 meeting that extend the completion deadlines for the projects at the request of the state.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources awarded the city’s Parks and Recreation Department an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development, or OSLAD, grant to further develop Riverfront Park in May 2013.

The city also received an OSLAD grant in April 2014 to further develop Bristol Bay Park in the Bristol Bay subdivision.

In March of last year, the state informed city officials that the grants had been suspended, along with other grants across the state. On Aug. 10, city officials were informed that the grants had been reinstated.

The Riverfront Park grant is set to expire at the end of this year, and the extension approved by the CIty Council gives a new completion date of Dec. 31, 2017.

The Bristol Bay Park grant was set to expire June 30, 2017, and the exten-

sion gives a new completion date of June 30, 2018.

At the meeting, Alderman Joel Frieders expressed his excitement at the city getting the grants reinstated.

“Woo!” Frieders exclaimed. “Can we have some excitement? This is exciting.”

Yorkville Council objects to YHS homecoming Eldamain towing business parade set for Oct. 8

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council has unanimously approved an objection to a towing business proposed just outside the city limits.

Aldermen voted at their Aug. 23 meeting objecting to a proposed rezoning for Jets Towing and Services, filed as J.A. Schleining LLC, from an agricultural use to a limited manufacturing district zoning. The company is proposing a towing and truck storage area on a 8.8-acre property at 790 Eldamain Road, just south of Galena Road in unincorporated Bristol Township.

Even though the property is not in the city limits, state law allows for municipalities to voice objection or support for proposed rezoning within one and one-half miles of the city limits. The City Council’s action will now require the County Board to have eight out of 10 members vote in favor of the rezoning, according to the resolution passed by the city. The request is slated to be reviewed by the County Board in October, according to

Krysti Barksdale-Noble, the city’s community development director.

“The issue here is the property is currently in violation of the county regulations for an agriculturally zoned property,” Barksdale-Noble told the City Council at its meeting.

Barksdale-Noble further wrote in a memo to the City Council, “While the proposed manufacturing use is consistent with the city’s current future land use plan, it is noted that the proposed comprehensive plan update has designated this area for estate/conservation residential – inconsistent with the proposed use requested.”

There are currently five “barntype buildings and structures” on the property, according to Barksdale-Noble’s memo.

“Finally, the [city’s planning and zoning] commission recommended having all semi-truck towing and repair operations happen in a completely enclosed building/ structure and not allow any storage of vehicles on gravel surfaces, should the county permit the proposed rezoning,” she wrote.

“Some common themes are frustration with the number of regulations, especially something like this where they try and be a one-stop shop, the challenges, all the labeling,” he said. “It might be that they have to have eight different menu labels throughout the store, literally daily changes because they might have different doughnut options or different sandwich options or specials during the day.

“And just to hear how challenging that is and costly that is and oftentimes, how the regulation is very punitive, so it’s not just, hey, let’s work together to make sure customers have good information. Boy, the store wants to do that, but a lot of things are written in a way that it’s just a ‘gotcha’ – that’s what I’m hearing from the companies or the stores I’m going to. They want to comply, they want to do the

right thing, but it’s piling on where it’s regulation after regulation.”

After a question-and-answer session with the media, Hultgren also reflected on his choice for president in the November election: Donald Trump.

Before the Republican National Convention, he said he was “warming” to Trump but was not committed to voting for him.

“To me, it’s a binary choice,” he said. “There’s two choices: It’s Hillary Clinton, it’s Donald Trump. I’m not supporting Hillary; I’m not going to do anything to help her. I don’t trust her.

I think everything she’s doing is about herself and her foundation and her family and her friends. So, very frustrating to me. New stuff every single day, more untruth, more things that she said that are just not true. So, I’m not going to support her; my choice is I’m going to support Trump. Do I agree with him on everything? No, I

don’t. But I also realize, I don’t know if there’s any other candidate, other than myself, that I agree with all the time.

And that’s a healthy process. Give and take, hopefully we’ll work through some of that stuff. I think he’s getting better on some things.”

Referring to the Republican nominee for vice president, Hultgren said, “I really like Mike Pence, I think he’s a great choice for vice president. I really like the process Trump is going through of how he’s going to select Supreme Court justices. To me, that’s hugely important, maybe the most important thing this president is going to do, whoever it is, is Supreme Court picks. It will be at least two, maybe three, maybe four Supreme Court justices, and I really respect the process that he’s going through much more than Hillary Clinton. So, just in those two reasons, that’s enough for me to vote for Donald Trump.”

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren visited the Casey’s General Store on Route 34 in Plano on Aug. 31 as part of a campaign organized by a convenience store trade association.

Hultgren, R-Plano, toured the gas station and kitchen area of the store and worked the counter, serving a couple customers, while talking with representatives of Casey’s about their concerns and issues.

Talking with the media, Hultgren also voiced support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. “... My choice is I’m going to support Trump,” Hultgren said.

The Arlington, Va.-based National Association of Convenience Stores, or NACS, organized the event, called an NACS In Store.

“This is something I love to do, to get out and see what’s going on in the community, learn about different businesses, hearing from employees,” Hultgren said. “We heard from [NACS] that this is a program they have to allow congressmen to come in and tour, talk to some management but also with local staff, get a chance to serve some customers. And hear what’s working well, what are some of their frustrations that they’re facing, what are the challenges a store like this has to run, to be competitive, to really have what customers want and need.”

Hultgren said the store is a local employer and a benefit to the community.

“I think they employ 20 or 30 people here, so that’s a big impact in a community like Plano,” he said. “So grateful that they’re here and that they’re growing.”

Waubonsee celebrates first 50 years This month Waubonsee Community College is beginning a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Voters in portions of Kendall, Kane, Will and LaSalle counties approved the establishment of the college district in a referendum in July 1966 and the following year the college offered its first classes in an abandoned Jewel store on River Street in downtown Aurora.

Since that time the college has continued to grow and as of this writing has served more than 290,000 students – including 33,568 degree and certificate earners – over the past half century.

Waubonsee has some especially strong ties to Kendall County. Nearly 30,000 of the college’s students have or currently reside in Kendall County.

According to enrollment figures provided by Waubonsee, just over 10,000 of the college’s students have come Oswego, 7,900 from Montgomery, 6,500 from

Yorkville, 4,000 from Plano and 3,200 from Sandwich.

In the college’s earliest years, the college offered evening classes in county high schools, including Oswego and Yorkville.

The county has also been home to some of the college’s most instrumental advocates and leaders, including longtime Collage Board President Richard Dickson of Yorkville and the late Richard Akerlow, a member of the college’s founding board of trustees.

Bill Prince, the college’s first athletic director and physical education department chairman, and Dr. Helen Baker, founding director of the college’s nursing education program, both live in Oswego.

Today, community colleges are widely accepted as necessary public institutions. But it’s important to remember that back in the 1960s not everyone saw the need for or understood the role community colleges could play in advancing the educational opportunities of students after high school. Fortu-

nately for today’s residents of Waubonsee’s district, there were enough residents who did support the early efforts to establish the college.

Over the past five decades the college has become an integral part of Kendall County and the other communities it serves. Go into just about any business or public institution in Kendall County today and you’ll likely find someone who has at some point in their life attended a class, earned a degree or a certificate, or participated in a program offered

by Waubonsee. Those people have used the knowledge and the skills they learned to improve their own lives, their families, their businesses and the community at large.

The end result is that Kendall County and the rest of the college district is in a much better place today because those voters said “yes” on that July 1966 referendum to establish a community college district.

Another in long line of not entirely honest governors People really liked Joel Matteson.

In fact, the early Kendall County settler was so likable that he was eventually elected governor of Illinois, where he did a good job by all accounts, only to be disgraced after leaving office.

Matteson was typical of many of the men who moved west to the Illinois frontier in the 1830s. Born in Watertown, New York, on Aug. 8, 1808, Matteson worked as a teacher and businessman before moving to South Carolina in 1831. There, he became a successful railroad construction foreman.

But in the early 1830s, the Illinois frontier was the place where ambitious men were making their marks.

So in 1834, Matteson moved to Illinois, possibly drawn to the growing state by the lure of the creation of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, proposed to open navigation between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River.

The canal’s promoters saw it as a future economic growth engine for Illinois, and their vision wasn’t far off the mark. As early as 1673, it had been suggested that a canal could easily connect Lake Michigan with the Illinois River, making a direct connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River system.

To that end, in 1816, the U.S. Government signed a treaty with Indian tribes of northern Illinois that included the cession of a canal corridor 10 miles on either side of the Chicago-DesPlaines-Illinois river system, all the

Matteson arrived in Kendall County in 1834. He decided to temporarily partner with Eli Gleason, Jeremiah Cole, Dr. O.J. Corbin and Daniel Lamb to carve their own homesteads out of Illinois’ frontier land. The group built a log cabin about a mile north of Chester House’s claim, which was in Section 15 of what would one day become Kendall County’s Seward Township.

The men spent the winter of 1834-35 cutting timber with which to build their own cabins and fence off claims.

In 1835 all the men, with the exception of Dr. Corbin, bought land from the government, including Matteson’s 1,189 acres in Sections 9, 10, 15, 23, and 26 of Seward Township. All of it was well-watered by AuSable Creek.

It was an interesting group that worked through that winter of 1834.

Dr. Corbin became a well-known physician in Plainfield. Jeremiah Cole was one of Kendall County’s first county board members and went on to hold a number of other county offices.

Gleason became a solid citizen and

the I&M Canal. But during his four years in office, Matteson reduced the debt by more than $4 million.

The most momentous national event during Matteson’s term was passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, introduced into the U.S. Senate by Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, an Illinois Democrat. The bill, which eliminated the Missouri Compromise limiting the spread of slavery into new states, eventually passed. But debate in Illinois even after the bill’s passage was intense, with Douglas coming in for sharp criticism from the state’s growing numbers of anti-slavery residents.

FORUM To the Editor: Increasing reports of Americans suffering from identify theft demonstrate the vulnerability of our personal information.

I recently had a conversation with a family from Will County who recounted to me the horrific story of how it took months to recover their life savings stolen by an identify thief. In 2014, a colleague of mine in the U.S. House, Jim Renacci (OH-16), and his wife were also victims of identity theft.

Americans are compelled to surrender personal information to the government for a variety of reasons, including applying for a job and filling out tax forms.

Unfortunately, the government does not always prioritize the safety of your valuable, private information.

One such case is home mortgage disclosure. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) requires that certain personal information – such as credit scores – be disclosed online when applying for a home mortgage. The CFPB says the information is anonymous, but skilled thieves can connect the dots between potential homeowners and their information, putting their finances at risk.

In order to improve the financial security of Americans, I introduced the Homeowner Information Privacy Protection Act (H.R. 4993) to eliminate the gap in private data security for Americans that apply for mortgages. It halts any federal agency or entity from publishing this personally identifiable information until all potential privacy concerns are address.

The government then must make the case for publishing such data.

Previously, I have supported two House-passed bills – the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act and the Safe and Secure Federal Websites Act – which improve the way the federal government handles and discloses the private information of citizens in the areas of health insurance and tax

filings.

Americans deserve to have private, personal information secured when they entrust it to the government. These legislative solutions are steps to ensure they are protected.

Legislators need to come together this fall

To the Editor: As public schools throughout the Fox Valley and the State of Illinois open on-time and students return to the classroom, it’s important to recognize that this only happened because of compromise.

Earlier this summer, the possibility of schools not opening on-time and teachers not getting paid was very real, due to the long state budget impasse in Springfield. However, on June 30, legislators came together and voted to approve a six-month stopgap budget that included funding to ensure the new school year would start without delay.

The outcry from parents and teachers would have been deafening if we had failed to do this – and justifiably so. As the father of three, including one in high school and one who just started kindergarten, I shared the concern of many other parents about the impact on our schools if the politicians in Springfield did not get their act together this summer and pass a budget compromise.

My House Republican colleagues and I stood firm in our conviction that we could not stand by and allow our kids’ education to be held hostage in the Springfield budget battle. We were determined to take K-12 education out of the political crossfire, and we did. Yet this could not have been achieved if we had not stood together and kept pressure on the Democrats who hold a firm grasp on power in the Illinois House of Repre-

As a freshman legislator, I have found that compromise in Springfield has been far too rare. Democrats have controlled the Illinois House for all but two years since 1983; and have held a large majority in the State Senate since 2003. Consequently, they have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. This explains why they have refused to allow an up-ordown vote on any of the meaningful and long-overdue reforms proposed by the Governor that would restore growth and opportunity to the Illinois economy; and make state government more efficient and accountable.

Schools across Illinois have opened on time. We can and should be thankful for that. However, we’ll be right back where we started with another budget impasse and school funding being threatened unless legislators come together this fall and enact a budget with reforms that put the interests of families and taxpayers ahead of the special interests that have dominated Springfield far too long.

You have to wonder, back in the winter of 1834 when Matteson and his friends shared a rough log cabin in the AuSable timber, whether they talked about their hopes and dreams. Did Matteson confide that he wanted to be governor and maybe U.S. senator?

Did Eli Gleason talk about his sweetheart, Clarissa Johnson, whom he would marry in 1837? Did Jeremiah Cole have any idea he would one day be Kendall County Clerk and county treasurer?

Joel Matteson hit the heights and occasional depths. All things considered, though, he didn’t do nearly as badly as some.

Fern Dell set to host dinner KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Fern Dell Historic Association will host a 5 B’s pork chop and chicken drive-through dinner on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Fern Dell Museum, 9 E. Front St. in Newark.

The event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Just drive up to the museum, place your order, and pick up your dinner. Cost is $12 for two chops or half a chicken or a combo. A dinner roll, baked beans, coleslaw and applesauce are included in all meals.

Proceeds from all of Fern Dell fundraisers go toward the upkeep and renovation of the four museum buildings in Newark, the one-room Fern Dell School, the Misner Blacksmith Shop and the two museum buildings on East Front Street, as well as showcases and display areas in the museums.

The museum will have artifacts from the village of Lisbon on display sometime in September. The village of Helmar is currently showcased with many items loaned for display by the Christian Family.

Fern Dell Museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

There is no admission, but donations are always accepted.

Membership in the Fern Dell Historic Association is open to anyone interested in history and ancestry. Membership fees are minimal.

The annual meeting of Fern Dell will be Saturday, Oct. 22. Stan Seevers, a retired fire chief from central Illinois will present a program on unusual small household, medical and farming items. More will be announced on this later. The public is invited to attend.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged a Millbrook man with failure to register as a sex offender, police said.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies conducted an address verification on registered sex offender David Eichelberger of the 8000 block of Fox River Drive in Millbrook on June 13. During the verification, deputies learned that Eichelberger may have been in violation of the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act, police said.

Following an investigation by the sheriff’s office, the State’s Attorney’s OfDavid fice charged Eichelberger with one count Eichelberger of failure to register as a sex offender, a Class 3 felony, on Aug. 17. Eichelberger’s bond was set at $10,000.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Eichelberger on Aug. 30 in the 8000 block of Fox River Drive in Millbrook.

Oswego police arrested an Arkansas man at O’Hare International Airport on Aug. 31 in connection with an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted an Oswego boy, police said.

The investigation involved a joint effort by Oswego police, the Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and authorities from Japan and Australia as well Alexander S. as INTERPOL, the International Bowers Criminal Police Organization, according to Oswego police.

Police said Oswego detectives arrested Alexander S. Bowers, 28, of the 0-100 block of Crape Myrtle Place in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the airport at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 31 after his arrival on a flight from Tokyo.

Bowers was charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a Class 2 felony, Oswego police said.

“Bowers is alleged to have had ongoing sexual contact with a male juvenile at an Oswego residence over a span of approximately four years,

starting in 2008 when the victim was 9 years old and Bowers was 20 years old,” a release from the Oswego police stated.

Oswego police said the victim’s parents reported the contact to them once they learned of it this past March. During the investigation, police determined that Bowers had relocated to Arkansas, and on Aug. 23, Oswego detectives learned that he had traveled to Japan and was attempting to travel to Australia, police said.

“Oswego detectives notified ICE/Homeland Security Investigations who notified Australian authorities of the investigation,” the Oswego police stated. “Australian authorities revoked Bowers’ Australian travel visa that same day.”

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the six felony charges against Bowers and a Kendall County judge issued a warrant for his arrest with a $1 million bond the following day, police said.

Oswego detectives notified INTERPOL of the warrant and Bowers was detained by Japanese authorities on Tuesday, Oswego police said. Japanese authorities arranged to have Bowers returned to the U.S., and when he arrived at the airport he was taken into custody by Oswego detectives, transported to the Oswego police station, booked, processed and taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending court, police said.

Yorkville police arrested Christopher Mojczan, no age given, of the 4000 block of Tampa Drive, Yorkville on a charge of domestic battery Sept.4 at 6:13 p.m. at his residence. Police said while investigating the incident they were told the suspect had battered two victims.

DUI charge in crash Yorkville police arrested Jerilynn Leduc, 32, of the 300 block of Rosewood Street, Plano, after the vehicle she was driving was involved in a crash on Route 34 and Game Farm Road Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. Police said Leduc has been charged with driving under the influence, no child safety seat and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Caught stealing milk Yorkville police said they caught two juveniles stealing milk at Yorkville Intermediate School in the 100 block of East Schoolhouse Road Sept. 5 at 7:20 p.m. Police said the suspects had entered the school through an unsecured door.

Cell phone, other items stolen A cell phone and other items worth an estimated $770 were stolen from a business in the 4000 block of North Bridge Street in Yorkville Sept. 5, according to Yorkville police.

Police said they investigated.

Dogs reported injured Yorkville police are investigating an incident in which two dogs were injured while at a res-

idence in the 200 block of Bertram Drive Aug. 28. Police said the owner of the dogs left them with family at their Bertram Drive residence.

During a visit, police said the owner noted that one of the dogs had a bruised abdomen while another had sustained a chipped tooth and a broken blood vessel in its right eye.

Police described the dogs as a Pekingese mix and a Shih Tzu-Maltese mix.

Police said the owner removed the dogs from the residence and they were treated at a local veterinary clinic. Police said they had no suspects in the incident as of Friday.

Vehicle damaged in lot An Oswego Township resident told Yorkville police that her vehicle was damaged while parked in the 400 block of Countryside Parkway Sept. 1. Police said the victim found a large dent on the driver’s side of her vehicle that extends from the driver’s door back to the rear tire. iTunes scam costs $500 An 81 year-old man was the victim of a scam involving iTunes cards Aug. 30, according to Yorkville police.

Police said the victim was contacted by an unknown male subject who pretended to be his grandson. The unknown male advised the victim that he was in jail and needed bond money to get out. The unknown male told the victim he needed a $500 iTunes gift card as bond. The victim then went out and purchased a $500 iTunes gift card and was then contacted by another male who claimed to be a police officer who then took the card number and activation number from the victim. Police said the victim lost $500 in the scam.

Hit and run Yorkville police took a report of a hit and run accident that occurred Aug. 30 in the 600 block of Yellowstone Lane. Police said a parked vehicle was struck by another, unknown vehicle which left the scene.

Lauren Drive burglary Yorkville police are investigating a burglary from a residence in the 3000 block of Lauren Drive Aug. 30. Police said an impact drill and hammer were taken in the incident.

Battery in Newark County sheriff’s deputies arrested Tiffany Nicole Chimmy, 22, of the 1400 block of Skylark Lane, Plainfield, on a charge of domestic battery on Sept. 5 at 1:45 a.m. in the 0-100 block of Coy Park Drive, Newark. Police said they arrested Chimmy after she allegedly caused injury to another individual during an altercation at the residence.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Charles Ray Wargo, 20, of the 0-100 bloc of Springdale Road, Boulder Hill, on Sept. 4 at 6:29 p.m. in the area of Long Beach Road and Chatham Place in Boulder Hill.

Police said Wargo was wanted on a Kendall County warrant.

Cellphone stolen A cellphone was reported stolen from a motel in the 1100 block of Route 30 in Oswego Township on Sept. 5, according to county sheriff’s reports. Police said they are investigating.

Motorcyclists injured A Sandwich resident, James M. Castleton, 44, of the 30th block of Hummingbird Court, was injured when he lost control of his motorcycle while driving on Rogers Road at Whitfield Road in Millbrook on Sept. 2 at 5:47 p.m., according to county sheriff’s reports. Police said Castleton was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. According to police, Castleton lost control of his motorcycle as he attempted to avoid a vehicle traveling westbound into his lane.

Police said when they arrived at the scene they observed at least seven to eight people involved in an altercation outside the apartments.

Hometown Days: a great way to end the summer A rea residents of all ages enjoyed the fun at Yorkville’s Hometown Days celebration held this past Friday through Sunday in Beecher Community Park on Game Farm Road. In addition to live music and food, fest-goers thrilled again to the Ultimate Air Dogs Show, checked out the vintage cars at the Pride and Joy Car Show, and had fun at the carnival. Other celebration highlights included the annual Book It! 5K run Saturday morning to benefit the Yorkville Public Library. Ray Heriaud of Sheridan won the race with a time of 22:32. The top female finisher was Amy Michalisko of Yorkville with a time of 26:10. The fest was organized by the city’s park and recreation department with the sponsorship of numerous local businesses.

September 1951 • Quite an operation occurred the other evening in front of the Barley Fork downtown.

Don Johnson operated without anesthetic on the concrete steps of the Fork, breaking the steps up and hauling them away with the Hughes Super Service wrecker.

While all were wondering how entry was to be gained to the Fork, Don drove up with new corrugated steel steps and slid them into position. With the addition of a handrail on each side, Operation Don’t Slip was voted a huge success.

September 2006 • The City of Yorkville will be the oversight authority if a landfill application is received, as expected, for a parcel of land on Route 71 at Highpoint Road. After four hours of public comment, virtually all opposed to the action, the Yorkville City Council annexed the 1,113 acres site. About 220 acres would be used for the proposed landfill.

September 2001 • Kendall County residents tried to sort out what happened in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in Washington, D.C. and New York City. One of the victims was a Yorkville native, Jeffrey Collman, 41, a flight attendant on American Airline Flight 11, the first of two planes that hit the towers in New York.

September 1996 • Public hearings were held on the Lakehead oil pipeline. The proposed route begins at the east side of Kendall County near Route 52 and exits the county on the north west portion, near Little Rock.

September 1991 • Dozens of Bristol residents were evacuated after about 20 cars of a freight train derailed just east of Cannonball Trail.

There was a fear the hazardous materials had spilled, causing the evacuation. Aurora Fire department Hazardous Materials team members donned safety suits to check out the wreckage. No hazardous spill was found and damage was estimated at $300,000.

Larson’s father started the ambulance business in Yorkville more than 50 year ago. He cited rising costs and regulations. Residents of the Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District will vote on a proposal to form an ambulance district in November.

September 1966 • Franklyn Martin, Chief of Police of Yorkville for 26 years under six different city administrations, submitted his resignation to the City Council. Leroy “Bud” Saum of Aurora was named to replace him.

September 1961 • Local conservationists are looking for answers to why so many fish are dying in the Fox River. Seems some cyanide was improperly disposed of near Aurora and it made its way into the river and downstream.

September 1956 • At a meeting of the Bristol Town Board, Ernest R. Zeiter, a young and energetic businessman, was selected to succeed the late Harlan W. Grimwood as supervisor of Bristol

September 1941 • The Newark 4-H softball team took second in the state 4-H softball tournament held at the University of Illinois in conjunction with the Farm Bureau State Sports Festival.

Earl Thompson and Spencer Knudson shared the pitching duties. Robert Knudson, Glenn and Wayne Gilbertson, Robert Anderson and Bud Johnston all had home runs.

September 1936 • The Yorkville Centennial closed with a street dance and carnival which attracted one of the largest crowds of the five-day celebration. The “Fashion March of Time” had to be postponed on account of rain and was held in the high school auditorium Sunday.

A vast throng witnessed the parade which included the 55-piece Mooseheart band.

The home’s accumulation of unwanted or not needed items can be reduced while the church’s rummage sale provides a resale opportunity for others to purchase good reusable items at low prices. The recycling/ resale process also reduces landfill accumulation.

Donations of clean, usable items in

good condition may be brought to the church at 409 Center Parkway from Monday, Sept. 19, through noon on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

No electronics or infant car seats will be accepted or sold – no TVs, computers, printers, typewriters, phones or fax equipment.

Proceeds from the sale will support various church programs as well as charitable organizations that help provide for the needs of people in the Yorkville area and beyond.

Two men in an eight-cylinder machine came from the west, stopping at the station a little after 8 p.m. for gasoline. They made a hasty survey of the situation, then drew guns and held up Russell who came out to attend to their wants.

September 1921 • The Kendall County Homecoming Picnic was held in Yorkville, despite the rain.

Chairman was Oscar Friedberg. There was a horseshoe tournament, good speakers, a fast baseball game won by the Yorkville Orioles, excellent band music and a pleasing dance.

September 1916 • Glen Palmer returned from the Springfield Fair, coming home with five first prizes on Barred Rock chickens and having the best display.

September 1911 • Three horses in James Naden’s pasture were killed by lightning.

September 1906 • Stanley Leverich has a “Turno roundabout,” the third of the automobile vehicles in town.

September, 1901 • Frank Harris has some ears of white corn in his field as long as your arm.

September 1891 • Yorkville Schools began business for the season and the young people were delighted to resume their duties. Prof. Edmunds is at the head of things with Mrs. Morse the assistant in the high school. Miss McGill, a new teacher, Miss Ida Palmer, Miss Hanna Walt and Miss Nannie Hill teach in the other departments.

September 1886 • Workmen have been busy erecting a bridge over the Little Rock Creek southeast of Plano.

September 1881 • Nate Louck’s new barn in Oswego has a cistern under it that will hold 500 barrels of water and he is anxious for a rain to fill it up.

Nate has one of the finest barns in the county.

September 1876 • The grand centennial exhibition of the Kendall County Fair was held. The finest display of horses, cattle, hogs etc ever shown in Kendall County. The weather has been foul and the fair is extended one day. Program includes trotting exhibitions and a balloon ascension.

September 1866 • Owing to the rain and wet condition of the grounds on Tuesday last, the officers of the Kendall County Agricultural Society deemed it the best policy to postpone the holding of the Kendall County Fair until next month. The same premium list, rules, etc. as has been advertised will govern the fair.

Yorkville Varsity : On Aug. 30, Yorkville lost to IMSA, 5-2. Freshman Ashley Hatch (4-0) remains undefeated at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win, and senior Bella Perez is also undefeated (4-0) at No. 2 singles after a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Titans.

On Aug. 31, Yorkville (3-1) defeated Plainfield Central 6-1. Hatch won 6-1, 6-1 and Perez won 7-5, 7-5. Yorkville won at No. 3 singles by forfeit. CJ Bell was the next to take the handoff from quarterback Ty Liaromatis and run in the 1-yard touchdown, and Henry was good on the PAT for the 14-0 lead. Bell followed with a third Yorkville TD – this time from the 21-yard line – to put the Foxes ahead 21-0.

“Marian has some really good athletes. They have five or six good skill players that worried us,” McGuire said. “We opened up with a 41-7 lead by halftime and we were just clicking really well. Our offense had a really good game plan going in and they executed. The offensive line did a great job and the receivers ran better routes and the quarterbacks hit the holes.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Liaromatis then found an open Brady Fisher inside the Marian red zone, and Fisher ran into the end zone for the 21-yard score to put the Foxes ahead 27-0.

Yorkville’s lead swelled to 41-7 by halftime after a 4-yard touchdown run from Trent Delaney and a 29-yard touchdown pass from Liaromatis to Jason Lewan. Liaromatis and Lewan connected again in the third quarter for a 6-yard touchdown before the Yorkville starters took a place on the sidelines.

Alex Johnson came in under center and handed the ball to Jacob Brooks, who ran in a 3-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to close the Yorkville scoring.

Liaromatis finished 13 of 19 passing for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Lewan made six receptions for 86 yards and Austin Avery had four catches for 63 yards. Brooks had 13 carries for 60 yards and Bell had 11 carries for 125 yards.

Defensively, Chris Galloway had six tackles and Lazzerick Jackson and Brendon Reifsteck finished with five each while Dylan Wisotzke made an interception.

“Holding them to seven is a great achievement for our defense,” McGuire said. “The thing I’ve been most impressed with these past two weeks has been our tackling. The kids have done a really good job wrapping up and driving their feet.”

Foxes defend Joliet Central Co-op swim team tops Huntley tournament title – again KENDALL COUNTY RECORD

The trio helped lead the girls volleyball team to a third straight tournament championship last Saturday as Yorkville went 5-0 to win the Joliet Central Invite.

“This team has so much heart,” Yorkville coach Barbie Langhoff said.

“They really wanted it and they went all out. For Laiken, Emily and Katie, this is the third time they’ve won this tournament, which is really awesome.

They were really excited about it, and there probably aren’t many kids that can say that.”

Yorkville (7-1) won their opening two pool play games on Friday, defeating Aurora Central Catholic and T.F. South. On Saturday, the Foxes returned to the court and dispatched Bloom, 25-19, 25-12. Miller had seven aces and four assists, Maddy Borque had five aces, five kills and seven assists and Katie Nolan and Bella Zeman had five kills each.

“Aurora Central Catholic was relatively competitive and they were an aggressive team, but we came out strong and held our own,” Langhoff said. “Against T.F. South, every kid was able to get in and we were able to work on different rotations. Every game like that you can develop more as a team. Bloom was a very good game for us and a learning lesson going into our next set.”

In the semifinal, Yorkville picked up a rally win over Lincoln-Way West, 17-25, 25-14, 25-17. Jenna Fosnacht had five kills, two blocks and three aces while Nolan had five kills and three blocks, Sydnei Avery had three kills and a pair of blocks and Gutzwiler had three kills and three blocks. Miller had seven digs and three assists and Sydney Hering had 10 digs.

Yorkville faced Joliet West in the championship match and won 25-18, 25-18. Miller, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had six assists, nine digs and an ace while Borque had eight assists and two aces, Gutzwiler had five kills and Zeman had three

The IMSA/Yorkville co-op girls swim team defeated Huntley, 109-71.

The 200-medley relay team of Colleen O’Conner, Linnea Lee-Brown, Lindy Hong and Polina Bondarenko posted a winning time of 1:55.81.

Brooke Jensen won the 200 free in 2:36.56. O’Conner was second in the 100 fly (1:01.87), Jensen was second in the 100 free (57.30) and Catie Cassanovas won the 500 free (5:44.38) while Maya Tiseth was second (5:45.78). The 200 free relay team of Paige Seplak, Lee-Brown, Jensen and Bondarenko won in 1:45.13. O’Conner won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.34) and the 400-free relay of Tiseth, Cassanovas, Hong and Jensen won in 3:55.89.

“We had a very good first meet,” coach Kevin Salter said. “Our team looked like we were mid-season and everything ran smoothly. We had many personal records and almost every returning swimmer was significantly faster than last year that this time.

Huntley was a competitive team with a lot of depth, making them a good level of competition. There was a lot of excitement and the sportsmanship from both teams was outstanding.”

GOLF

Yorkville Varsity Boys: On Aug. 30, Yorkville participated in the Panther Scramble at Blackberry Oaks and the Foxes shot a 68. Minooka won the event with a 56. With a depleted lineup on Aug. 31, Yorkville lost to DeKalb 161-196 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference opener. Alex Burks, Scott Bauder, Zach Helland and Alex Engelken scored for the Foxes.

Yorkville returned to the win column on Sept. 1 with a 187-190 win over Sandwich. Burks, Engelken, Bauder and Matt Szopinski turned in the four low scores for the Foxes. On Sept. 2, the Foxes shot a season-low 177, but lost to Plainfield North (167). Aidan Miragliotta led Yorkville with a 41, while scores from Burks (45), Bauder (43), and Engelken (48) counted.

Yorkville Varsity Girls : Yorkville picked up a win over Lisle, 238-251, on Aug. 30. Freshman Kait Natividad led the Foxes with an even par 36. Sophomore Livy Dearborn added a 57, sophomore Naya Campbell added a final score of 64, and senior Nicole Doles finished with an 81. If the Yorkville football team learned anything from its season-opening loss at West Aurora, coach Dan McGuire will know his scheduling changes have paid dividends for the Foxes.

Yorkville evened its record at 1-1 with last Friday’s 54-7 win over Chicago Heights’ Marian and will now host Rochelle in what will certainly be provide an evaluation for the Foxes heading into the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference season. Rochelle (1-1) comes into the game off a 46-21 loss to Johnsburg.

“Finding non-conference opponents is very difficult and Rochelle is always a competitive team,” Yorkville coach Dan McGuire said. “They pose some different challenges than what Marian did. They’re about 95 percent run and they just run left and run right. Their kids have been doing the same thing since they were born and they do an outstanding job up front. If we can hold the line, we can have a chance of being in the game with them. That’s why I really wanted to play a Week 1 game against West Aurora; I don’t want to wait until Week 3 or Week 4 to shore some things up. I felt it was important to have that Week 1 game as an eye-opener.”

YORKVILLE SETTLES FOR TIE After strong 4-0 start, Foxes underachieve in conference opener

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Opposing soccer coaches from Kaneland and Yorkville had much different reactions following Thursday’s 2-2 tie in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference opener.

Kaneland, who opened the season with an 0-3 start, considered the stalemate a victory – especially with Angel Escontrias netting his first goal of the season.

But after Yorkville’s 4-0 start and a championship finish in DeKalb’s Barb Cup, coach Andrew Johnson was less than pleased with the finish against the Knights.

“We gave it away,” Johnson said. “It is a loss. In my opinion, that’s a winnable game.”

Yorkville (5-0-1) came out firing against Kaneland in the Foxes’ home opener, but it was Knights senior Trevor Jahns who opened the scoring with a breakaway goal at the 32:07 mark of the first half.

Less than two minutes later, Yorkville answered after a corner kick from senior Bobby Reichert created a header goal by senior Wyatt McKibbon at 30:56. The Foxes created other opportunities, but Nick Arcara’s shot was saved by Kaneland keeper Hunter Smith.

With 4:44 left in the first half, senior Bailey Kish sent the ball in from 20-yards out to put Yorkville ahead 2-1, which stuck through the midpoint of the second half.

Reichert and Kish tried to add to the Foxes’ lead, but Smith continued to defend the Knights’ goal. Then, the equalizer came with 21:01 on the clock as Escontrias scored on an assist from Christian Medrano.

“We had a talk at halftime. You’re not going to get a positive result out of this if you don’t become more aggressive,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said.

“I thought we matched their intensity in the second half. That’s a darn good team. Would we have liked to win? Yes. But it’s not a loss. It’s a positive result.”

Yorkville’s best chance to try for the win came with 7:4 left when Jackson Torok’s shot attempt sailed left. The Foxes scrambled to set up a scoring play in the closing minutes, but could
