New board, new name among changes for Kendall County group

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A new board and leadership took over at the Kendall County Food Pantry Thursday morning.

The organization changed its name to the Kendall County Community Food Pantry Inc., as the ownership and responsibility for the operations were turned over to a new group, according to pantry officials.

Greg Witek, Little Rock-Fox fire chief, CEO of PagePath Technologies and KenCom dispatch executive board chair, was named board chairman.

“The Kendall County Community Food Pantry Inc. has been established to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the pantry and the continued care for and support of the existing clients who depend on the pantry for so many of their weekly needs,” Witek said.

“Speaking for the new corporation’s directors, we’re honored to be asked in and now associated with such a dedicated and caring team of volunteers.”

The other members of the new Kendall County Community Food Pantry Board are Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird; Rick Bill, food pantry operations management; Stan Free, executive vice president of First National Bank; Oswego Village President Gail Johnson; Millbrook Village President Jackie Kowalski; Fred Kreinbrink, operations manager for city of Naperville electric; Becky Morphey, Fox Valley Family YMCA Board chairman; Larry Nelson, CEO of Nelson Multimedia and KenCom finance chairman; Tandy Pinter, operations management for the food pantry; Steve Steinwart, president of Meadowvale Dairy; and Grant Wegner, retired chief judge and counsel to Mahoney, Silverman and Cross law firm.

Schools in Kendall County are either now or will soon be in session.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind motorists to use caution and allow extra time in their commute due to an increase in traffic.

Twenty-miles-per-hour school zone speed limits are in effect on school days, during school hours, when children are present.

If you are cited for speeding in a school zone, the law does not allow court supervision, and carries a minimum $200 fine.

Cellular phone use and texting are not authorized on any roadway and are especially dangerous in a school zone. Sheriff’s deputies will be increasing patrols and enforcement in school zones during this time.

Police said the search warrants were part of an investigation, which is ongoing, regarding “suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the Kendall County Food Pantry accounts.”

Six days after the search warrants were executed, Maria Spaeth, then the food pantry’s executive director, and her husband, Ken, resigned from their duties at the pantry, according to food pantry officials.

Maria Spaeth, a Yorkville resident, was found dead in her Lake Holiday vacation home June 21. DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller said Spaeth died of a prescription drug overdose, but that it was undetermined whether it was intentional or accidental.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced recently that a special prosecutor has been assigned to the theft case. Judge Timothy McCann appointed a special prosecutor from the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor.

Weis said the special prosecutor was needed “due to me being a potential witness in the case.”

BRIEFS Yorkville police investigate armed robbery downtown

Yorkville police are continuing their investigation into an armed robbery that occurred in the 200 block of East Hydraulic Avenue in the city’s downtown Aug. 14 at 9:38 p.m.

Police said a male suspect described as African-American, approximately 6 feet fall and 190 pounds, displayed a weapon and took items from two male victims.

Police said the suspect was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and had a red bandanna covering his face.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to police.

District: Only four of 34 Yorkville teachers left position because of ‘dissatisfaction’

When people resign late, that means we’re hiring late, which means we’re getting people who have not found a job yet.

We get great teachers, but they’ve just gotten out of school, they haven’t found a job, they really, really want a job. So all too often we end up with teachers who are driving 25 minutes to an hour to get to our facilities. So it puts us in this position of, those teachers then next spring start looking for positions that are closer to home.”

Courtney said the district has “a half dozen to a dozen of those each year.”

Courtney said the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative’s dissolution also caused the district to hire more teachers than a typical year, as the district absorbed the co-op’s services.

“We had over 200 hires this year,” he said. “A number of the new hires

that we’ve had, which is around 45, and when I say new, new people to the district who haven’t worked here in any capacity, a lot of those were positions that had not been filled at the co-op.

This year is kind of a strange year, with the numbers getting a little bit skewed.”

Liptrot said there was a perception that the district had to hire more teachers after last year’s contentious union contract negotiations.

“I think it got into people’s minds that we had negotiations last year and now all these teachers are leaving because we had to hire all these people,” she said. “That was not the case.”

Courtney said the perception that teachers were leaving due to low morale was not true, and that he plans on presenting the report annually to the board.

“The rumors fly,” he said. “Last year when we were in negotiations one of the pieces that the union side was throwing at us was that the teachers were leaving in droves, and they were leaving because of morale and what have you. And when I went back through the files I found it was quite the opposite. And that’s what kind of spurred on the whole idea of doing this report annually just so we have an idea of what is happening with our teachers.”

Work begins on Riverfront Park playground KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Bicentennial Riverfront Park in downtown Yorkville should have a playground later this year.

Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department officials have scheduled a community playground build event at the park site, where community volunteers will help complete most of the playground, according to Shay Remus, the city’s superintendent of recreation.

The playground build event is

slated for from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1 during the city’s Fall Festival, according to Remus. She said city parks staff will complete the rest of the work on the playground that isn’t done by the community volunteers.

The City Council OK’d a purchase proposal totaling $81,815 last spring from Burke Playground for the project.

According to Tim Evans, director of Parks and Recreation, the playground will have nature-themed equipment.

The city is financing the playground

from multiple funds.

The city previously was awarded a state Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant in May 2013 for Bicentennial Riverfront Park improvements. However, Gov. Bruce Rauner indefinitely suspended the funding for such grants last year.

In a memo to the council, Evans said Parks and Recreation plans to pay for the playground by using $15,000 pledged from the Riverfront Park Foundation, as well as $66,815 in funds

from a less than anticipated shortfall in the Parks and Recreation budget.

“The FY17 Parks and Recreation Department budget is based on a budgeted deficit of $146,000 in FY16. However, staff anticipates the FY16 budget deficit to be closer to $70,000, a $76,000 difference,” Evans says in the memo.

The City Council could use Downtown Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds to match the $15,000 pledge the Riverfront Park Foundation has pledged.

Yorkville School District officials recently praised the district’s high retention rate, despite a number of teachers leaving the district before the start of this school year.

As of Aug. 3, a total of 34 teachers have left the district, according to Kristine Liptrot, the district’s director of communications and community engagement.

Liptrot gave the following reasons for the teachers’ exit: retirement (five teachers); accepted an administrative position elsewhere (three); moved out of state or country (six); left the teaching profession (two); accepted a position closer to home (three); resignation in lieu of termination (eight); honorable discharge (three); accepted a position at a Chicago charter school (one); and resigned, reason unknown (three).

Additionally, the district hired 13 teachers to fill positions that had been vacated at the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative before or during the dissolution, Liptrot said.

“Of the 34 teachers that left the district, only four have been identified as leaving due to possible dissatisfaction in their current role in Yorkville Community Unit School District 115,” Liptrot said. “This equates to a 99 percent

retention rate for the 2015-2016 school year.”

The statistics were part of a report presented to the Board of Education at a recent meeting.

However, Shawn Collins, an eighth grade Kristine language arts teacher Liptrot and Yorkville Education Association president, said he believes the calculation is false.

“More than one percent of teachers left Yorkville,” Collins wrote in an e-mail. “And let’s be real. Professional educators will not burn bridges... so they may not share an honest answer as to why they chose to look for a new job. Aside from that, I really do not have too much to say aside from this: When someone looks for a new job, there is an aspect of their current employment that they are not happy with.”

Troy Courtney, director of human resources for the district, said the district has an issue with teachers that resign late in the summer, which results in teachers that are hired who live a good distance from the district. Those teachers then look for jobs closer to home come spring, and the cycle continues.

“We’ve gotten into this cyclical hiring that really puts us in a bad situation,” he said. “There is this pervasive

Towns make ‘shared services’ a reality Last summer the city of Yorkville and villages of Oswego and Montgomery adopted resolutions recognizing “the value of coordination” of public services among the three municipalities.

The resolutions were the byproduct of a study examining how the three neighboring municipalities might be able to share their services, bidding processes, personnel and equipment to save taxpayers some money. Representatives of the three municipalities worked for a year under the direction of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to prepare what was called the Lower Fox River Partnering Shared Services Study.

All too often over the years we’ve seen well-intentioned municipal officials pay consultants to draft detailed studies on all manner of issues, only to see those same studies languish on shelves or online due to either disinterest on the part of elected officials or turnover of municipal staffs and elected officials or both. Fortunately, that doesn’t appear to be happening with the shared services study.

As we reported last week, the Yorkville City Council unanimously approved an agreement with the village of Oswego which will allow Oswego to use Yorkville’s Vactor (vacuum) truck “to assist cleaning catch basins in the village for two days.”

In exchange, Bart Olson, Yorkville’s

administrator, said in a memo to the council that Yorkville will “identify a project at a later date... potentially leaf pickup in the fall” that Oswego can assist the city with. The Oswego Village Board approved the agreement Aug. 2.

We’ve long believed that area municipalities could share equipment and other resources – as long as it does not compromise the delivery of services to their respective residents.

In many instances, one municipality may have some equipment – like a vacuum truck – sitting unused in its garage that a neighboring town might be able to use.

Until recently, however, municipalities have been slow to embrace

the concept of sharing resources. But given the financial pressures being faced by all units of local government and the taxpayers they serve, it makes total sense for government officials to look for ways they can work together to save money.

We’re pleased to see Yorkville and Oswego adopt the agreement for the vacuum truck and look forward to seeing more similar agreements between the two municipalities and Montgomery. Taxpayers should be pleased because it’s a sign that officials in Yorkville and Oswego were indeed serious about looking for ways to save them money when they embarked on completing the shared services study nearly two years ago.

College kids are headed back to campus and public school students are thronging the office supply, shoe and clothing stores as they (and their parents) gird their loins for the start of another academic year.

Here at the Matile Manse, we’ve just wrapped up another summer. The family reunion and its amazing potluck dinner were enjoyed by all last Sunday, and that usually marks the beginning of the end of summer for us, which is appropriate since August is National Picnic Month.

Take a little trip back in time with me, please: It’s mid-February. The temperature has been below freezing for weeks, and snow covers the landscape. I take my Biology 122 students at Waubonsee Community College out to collect samples from Blackberry Creek. Amid the grumbling about the cold, students remark at how anything could still be alive in these conditions.

But, we are looking at this from a human perspective. We traipse out to the far north edge of the Sugar Grove Campus, crack through the ice in Blackberry Creek, and an insulated, living world is found beneath the surface. Just because we need parkas, hats, and gloves, doesn’t mean the invertebrates do. They can survive out here year-round.

It’s not just their survival in extreme temperatures that is remarkable, but their ability to survive the pollutants that wash in from agricultural fields, from salt-covered winter

If you live north of the college, you cross Blackberry Creek on Route 47 every day on your commute. It snakes through the communities of Elburn, Kaneville, Sugar Grove, Aurora, Montgomery and Yorkville. It dictates our watershed – the entire region draining into this body of water. It is an amazing ecosystem.

So, underneath the surface, what lies inside, and what story do they tell? Dip in an aquatic net, and you will find what look like tiny shrimp scuttling around. They are a tiny

crustacean that flourish in water with few fish predators. They can withstand some of the most polluted water conditions. You might also see a tiny, red worm. This is called a bloodworm, and is a larva of a fly called a midge, which you probably walk through clouds of on a walk at dusk by your local retention pond. Lots of bloodworms – and little else – is also a sign of polluted water.

You have a good chance of also coming across two jewels – a water scorpion, and a dragonfly larva. A water scorpion looks like a three-inch stick insect that has lost its way. What you will also notice is its long front arms, which are perfect for a water predator. As for the dragonfly – did you know that their offspring live in the water? This is a brilliant evolutionary strategy, keeping parents and offspring from competing for precious resources. Like the adult, these babies are agile hunters, trapping prey in

What story does this net full of living things from your backyard creek tell? Well, more predators means a healthy aquatic ecosystem, because if the ecosystem can support a predator, it is healthy enough to provide for the prey items it feeds on. But, an abundance of organisms that thrive in stagnant water, feeding on decaying plant matter, isn’t a good sign. In Blackberry Creek, we have a mixture of both, with water quality somewhere between pristine and not.

So, next time you are walking near Blackberry Creek, think about what lies under the surface, and how they can dictate whether you should take a sip, or pass.

County officials pledge to do better on noise rules Residents complain of noise from rural banquet facilities

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County zoning officials are talking about coordinating more with the sheriff’s office when it comes to noise complaints about banquet facilities in rural areas.

Banquet facilities in rural areas are becoming more common in the county, used for weddings, baby showers and other events.

Last month, the County Board approved a special use zoning for a new banquet facility planned for 9111 Ashley Road, in a split 5-3 vote, over the objections of neighbors who said such a facility would bring noise and additional traffic to the area. The venue will be owned operated by Ron and Dave Walker, who own the Whitetail Ridge Golf Club on Route 126.

Some residents at the hearing said there had been noise complaints about other rural banquet facilities that had not been addressed.

During a recent County Board Committee-of-theWhole meeting, board member Scott Gryder, chairman of the board’s Planning, Building and Zoning Committee, acknowledged that the board was unaware of the complaints.

“One of the things that came out of a previous special use hearing is there may have been some folks who had concerns about the noise levels at some of the different banquet halls, and we had no idea that there were those concerns,” Gryder said. “So this was an opportunity for us to talk about it again and talk about how we as a county can get some of that information back.”

Enforcement of noise rules for such rural facilities can be complicated. John Sterrett, the county’s senior planner, explained that the county’s noise ordinance does not apply to agricultural districts, including areas that have a special use zoning. In other words, it does not apply to those rural banquet facilities.

The facilities do have to abide by noise rules specifically for such facilities that are laid out in the county’s zoning ordinance, Sterrett explained.

However, neighbors who call in a noise complaint about a banquet facility will call the sheriff’s office to make that complaint. The sheriff’s office enforces the county’s noise ordinance, but since the noise or-

“The big difference, too, between the noise ordinance and the regulations on noise for banquet hall facilities, is the noise ordinance is enforced by the sheriff’s office, whereas the regulations on noise for special uses, that’s a zoning matter, so that’s something that our office actually enforces,” Sterrett said.

Sterrett said the sheriff’s office has offered to collaborate with the zoning officials when it comes to such noise complaints.

“It’s difficult for our office when these events are going on, the banquet halls don’t necessarily know they’re in violation of the noise regulations in the special use, so the sheriff’s office has offered to help us with the investigation and documentation if there are any complaints, and take readings of the noise at that specific location,” he said. “And then they would send us that information too, so we can review that and determine if there is a violation of the special use, if it’s something that becomes ongoing, or if it’s something that we need to address and possibly even contact that property owner and let them know that they’re in violation of the special use. I

think this is gonna help us out a lot moving forward using the sheriff’s office.”

Sterrett said of the sheriff’s office, “While they can’t enforce the noise ordinance – they can’t issue a ticket or they can’t do any kind of enforcement on their part for that noise that’s exceeding the limit – they can still document it and send it to our office and we’d take that up as a zoning matter.”

Undersheriff Harold Martin said at the meeting that they want to be on the same page with zoning officials.

“We’re here to help the residents when we get a complaint from the resident about the loud music which, they would call us to start with,” he said. “We would go out to the location where the issue is, and we would take decibel readings from that location.

At that point, we would explain to the resident that we would then turn that information over to building and zoning, at which point building and zoning will get involved and I would assume start an educational process with them first before actually fining them. And then if it happens again we’ll do the same thing and follow up again. But we wanted to make sure that we all work together on this and we’re all on the same page. Because that’s what helps the citizens.”

Two of the puppies were found in a Chicago park Monday.

Six Black Mouth Cur puppies were stolen from a Newark barn last Thursday, but while three of the puppies were found dead outside a store in Warrenville, the remaining three had been reunited with their owners

by Monday evening.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the puppies were reported stolen from a barn in the 16000 block of Route 52 in Newark on Thursday. The following day, three of the puppies were found deceased, but another was found alive and returned to its owner.

Monday evening, the sheriff’s office reported that the two remaining missing puppies were found alive in Chicago.

“A good Samaritan located them in a park downtown, and ultimately contacted his veterinarian office to get them checked out,” the sheriff’s office noted in a press release. “One of the

veterinarian technicians had noticed that they looked very similar to the puppies that were stolen, and contacted detectives. They were also checked out by the vet, and were found to be in good health.”

The sheriff’s office stated, “The victim was able to positively identify the puppies, and they have been returned home.

“We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the public, who thankfully flooded our inbox with tips that proved invaluable in this case.

November tax-hike referendum plan rejected Board President Wehrli, Board Chairman Shaw cast positive votes

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Forest Preserve District Board has voted down placing a referendum on November’s ballot for a tax increase that would help maintain its preserves.

The board voted 7-2 on Tuesday morning against putting the referendum on the November ballot, with Board President Jeff Wehrli and County Board Chairman John Shaw voting in favor of placing it on the ballot, and board members Robert “H.D.” Davidson, Judy Gilmour, Dan Koukol, John Purcell, Scott Gryder, Matthew Prochaska and Lynn Cullick voting against it. Board member Elizabeth Flowers was absent from Tuesday’s meeting.

The referendum would have asked voters for a property tax increase equivalent to 95 cents a year on a $100,000 home, according to Forest Preserve Director David Guritz. The most

recent amount of property taxes collected by the district was $545,148, and the increase would have given the district $670,301, according to the referendum docuRobert “H.D.” ments.

Prior to the vote, An- Davidson thony Miceli of Speer Financial, the district’s bond counsel, discussed an upcoming refunding, or refinancing, of bonds originally sold by the district in 2007 as part of the open space referendum approved by voters that year. The refunding would take place in January or February of next year, and would likely save the county taxpayers $1.8 million in interest over the next 10 years, or around $2.60 per year on a $100,000 home, according to Guritz.

The next elected board would vote on the bond refinancing, according to Guritz. New board members will take their seats in December.

Guritz argued that the cost of the tax increase would be outweighed by the savings realized via the bond refinancing.

At the meeting, Davidson said he was hesitant to vote on a binding referendum, which would require the

board to approve the tax increase if voters approved the referendum. He said the forest preserve needs to look at other revenue possibilities before going to the Scott voters for a tax increase.

Gryder “I ain’t saying that the forest preserve don’t need it,” he said. “I’m not saying down the road we don’t need it. I just think we need to be looking. ... We rolled up our sleeves, and I think we’re doing a good job with the budget. We’re getting things more under control. I like the direction we’re headed. I just can’t jump up here and support a binding referendum.”

Wehrli said the referendum question was “to let the voters decide whether they want to fund the forest preserve.”

“It’s not an automatic,” he said.

“This is simply to let the voters tell us what they want, and if you say that you don’t even want to listen to them, then I understand that vote. But that’s what this is about. This isn’t about how you look in front of a voter.”

Wehrli said the district has a balanced budget and that officials have “done a lot of work” to get the finances

in order.

“This is to allow the voters to tell us,” he said. “We’re letting the voters tell us.”

Gryder, however, said he agreed with Davidson. He said it is the first year that the district has had a balanced budget without using interest from their bond.

“I really think it’s premature to go back and ask taxpayers for more money,” Gryder said. “It’s going to add 95 cents to the tax bill, which ends up being $100,000 or so a year which is 10 percent of our overall budget. We’re not at a point, I don’t think, where we can go back and ask the taxpayers. We haven’t earned that right yet, to say we need another $100,000 or 10 percent of our budget. We still have more work to do, and if we get to that point it will be down the road, but we’re just not there yet.”

Gilmour said she was “surprised” that the referendum issue “came up so quickly,” noting that she first saw the binding referendum resolution at a district board meeting last Thursday.

“I don’t feel like we’ve even discussed it as a board,” she said.

Local law enforcement agencies recently participated in an Illinois Speed Awareness Day campaign, stepping up traffic stops for speeding and other violations.

The campaign took place July 27 and was designed to “take a proactive approach to promote safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists through both education and enforcement,” according to Cathy Nevara of the Oswego Police Department.

Oswego police made a total of 116 traffic stops, resulting in 89 warnings and 28 citations on that day, including three arrests, according to Nevara.

Citations included: 24 for speeding; one for operating an uninsured motor vehicle; one for no driver’s license (arrest); two for suspended or revoked driver’s license (arrest). Warnings included 88 for speeding and one for disobeying a stop sign, Nevara said.

Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Mrozek said deputies made a total of 44 traffic stops that day, resulting in 27 warnings and 17 citations.

The citations included 16 for speeding and one for an equipment violation, and warnings included 19 for speeding and eight for equipment violations.

Montgomery police made more than 60 traffic stops, resulting in 20 warnings and 32 citations, including one arrest. The citations included 30 for speeding, one for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and one arrest for no driver’s license. There were also 20 warnings for

increase but to “ask the voters.” He said he hoped there would be “80-some percent or so” registered voters voting in the November election.

“This is a true indication of how they feel... what kind of job we’re doing as a group,” he said. “This is not to say we will take it, this is to ask the voters. That to me is kind of a no-brainer.”

Guritz said the “pressures we are seeing on the forest preserve district are increasing.” The open space referendum that was approved in 2007 helped the district preserve approximately 2,500 acres of open space, instead of the projected 1,500 acres, partly because of district officials leveraging funds using federal and state grants, Guritz explained.

“Now we’ve got a big job to do out there,” he said. “We’re doing a whole lot now with a little bit. But we have a whole lot more to do. We’ll continue to look for hope in the impossible with that, but we also know that as acres come under restoration we’re going to see declining revenues from cropland leases. And we have more infrastructure out there – trails, buildings, etc. We’re going to be very, very hard-pressed to make it all work in the coming years.”

Following the vote to not place the referendum on the ballot, Wehrli called it a “message to the voters.”

Bristol-Kendall Fire honors firefighters, paramedics Five receive challenge coins for efforts to save injured man SHAW MEDIA The Bristol-Kendall Fire Protection District Board of Trustees recognized five individuals for excellence in trauma care at its meeting last Thursday.

The board awarded challenge coins to Engine 122 members Lt. Humza Shamsuddin, firefighter/EMT Randy Roberts, firefighter/paramedic Michael Pavlacka, and Medic 144 firefighter/paramedics Eric Jones and Bradley Christiansen.

These were the first challenge coins awarded by the Bristol-Kendall Fire Department since the inception of the challenge coins recognition program, department officials said.

On July 1, a 911 dispatch alerted the members of BKFD Engine 122 and Medic 144 from Station 2 that a person had fallen off a roof and was unconscious and barely breathing, according to officials.

“On their arrival they found an adult male that was severely injured from the fall off of the roof of a house,” BKFD officials wrote. “With no hesitation the paramedics and emergency medical technician started the process of trauma resuscitation to initially stabilize the person for expedited transport to Rush-Copley Medical Center.”

County buys $500 horse for Ellis House in split vote The Kendall County Forest Preserve Board voted narrowly Tuesday to buy a new horse for Ellis House and Equestrian Center near Minooka.

The board voted 5-4 to buy Candyman as a new horse for lessons at the facility. Board President Jeff Wehrli, County Board Chairman John Shaw, and board members John Purcell, Lynn Cullick and Matthew Prochaska voted in favor of the purchase, while board members Robert “H.D.” Davidson, Scott Gryder, Dan Koukol and Judy Gilmour voted against the purchase.

Candyman’s purchase price of $500 will be reimbursed by the Forest Foundation of Kendall County, Forest Preserve Director David Guritz told the board.

issues with Candyman. Guritz confirmed that Candyman is about 16 years old, has arthritis and will need injections twice a year for an annual cost of $500.

However, Guritz explained that Ellis uses slower horses for those taking beginner level lessons.

“We don’t work our horses very hard, because these are beginners,” he said. “Actually we prefer horses that have a little less pep in them in order to teach riders.”

In other horse news, Guritz reported that Shadow, another horse at Ellis, was recovering from a bacterial infection and will be out of service between four and six weeks.

Cullick asked if, by the time Shadow is fully recovered, it would be the slow season for lessons. Guritz said he was “hoping not,” adding that the Family Fun Day in the fall will help promote the Forest Preserve District’s services.

School board members Monday night increased the rates paid for subs on recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia.

“The substitute teacher pay rate of $95 [per day] has not been increased for more than four years,” he told board members.

In order to keep up with neighboring communities and to help recruit more substitute teachers, the board concurred with a recommendation of the administrative team to increase the daily fee to $100 from $95 effective this year.

“This would be in line with districts like Plainfield, Sandwich and Somonauk.

“And, as an added incentive, after a substitute teacher has subbed 60 days in the Plano schools during the

“Having good substitute teachers makes a difference between students having a productive day and just going through the motions.

“We know that once a substitute comes here, they love coming here because they know that our kids are terrific, and they love working with our administrators. But we think this will solidify a larger pool of substitutes for us,” he added.

Tommy’s Gift seeks donations for Open Door project SHAW MEDIA Tommy’s Gift is in need of support as it attempts to enhance the quality of life of eight special-needs and physically disabled residents of the Open Door Rehabilitation Center in Sandwich.

Tommy’s Gift has committed to these individuals to build a state-ofthe-art, fully accessible backyard retreat at the residence.

The design of this raised deck will

significantly increase the outdoor living space and accessibility for the residents, many of whom use wheelchairs. This will allow them the ability to freely spend time outdoors in a safe and controlled environment.

Tommy’s Gift was founded in 2012 by Tom and Kim Zimmerman as a faith-based mission of the United Methodist Church of Plano. The group’s focus is to help local families with home maintenance and repairs.

The group partners with the Open

Door Rehabilitation Center in serving adults with developmental disabilities. Many individuals have benefited from the efforts of the Open Door organization and have attained a sense of self-worth through independent living, training and employment.

Tommy’s Gift is seeking financial contributions to go toward the purchase of materials to build the outdoor retreat.

The group also is seeking those with the skills necessary to help build

Sandwich Fair offers activities for all ages

By PAT WALLIS news@kendallcountynow.com SANDWICH – Whether it’s the scent of cotton candy, the sound of mooing dairy cattle, the taste of homemade pie or seeing older folks seated on benches in front of the Home Arts Building, it all brings back memories of the Sandwich Fair.

The 129th annual Sandwich Fair, known as the Grandmother of fairs, will start Wednesday, Sept. 7, and play host to thousands of visitors through Sunday, Sept. 11. It’s still held on the Sandwich Fairgrounds, nearly 200 acres of oak-shaded grounds where there’s plenty of free parking.

Many of the food stands and booths are operated by area churches and organizations, bringing a home-town atmosphere to the fair. It’s often the place where old-timers meet and younger folks get acquainted.

The commercial buildings and grassy areas are friendly places to look through displays of the newest RV’s and campers, compare lawn-mowers, check out landscaping designs, even to

select an extendable flagpole with an American flag.

Livestock exhibits are in the west end of the fairgrounds. Exhibition halls for Horticulture, Home Arts, Arts and Photography, and for Antiques and Collectibles are in the center of the grounds and will be filled with items entered by competitors.

The first day, Sept. 7, is Children Free Day with youngsters age 12 and younger having free admission at the gate.

There will be Open and Junior Show judging all day of all exhibits and a Western Horse Show starting at 9 a.m. in the livestock area. Culinary competitions will be at 2 p.m. for Bountiful Yeast Treats, at 3:15 p.m. for Junior Pizza, and at 4 p.m. for Pasta Possibilities on the Home Arts Stage. There’s a tented area for the audience, who will be entertained by Sherri Farley playing her hammered dulcimer preceding and following the Pat Wallis for Shaw Media contests.

Pizzeria to host eighth annual Jason’s Hogfan Party Sept. 24 SHAW MEDIA AURORA – The eighth annual Jason’s Hogfan Party for leukemia and lymphoma research is set for 4 to 8 p.m.

Sept. 24 at Mike and Denise’s Pizzeria, 760 Farnsworth Ave., Aurora.

The event is held in honor of Jason Gould, who grew up in Elburn and later lived in Oswego. Gould died in January 2006 from a viral-related complication of leukemia. The fundraiser supports innovative cancer research at Jason Gould Ohio State University, according to a news release.

Since Gould was an avid Arkansas Razorbacks fan, his mother, Sandy Gould, said she and his family and friends thought it would be the perfect tribute to him to host the Hogfan parties every year his memory to raise money for research, the release stated.

Sandy Gould said in the release that Jason’s Hogfan Party has raised almost $175,000 for the work Ohio State

University’s Cancer Research Center is involved with. All proceeds and donations go directly to research, she said in the release.

There will be a raffle for an Apple iPad, Bose music system, Trek bike, large-screen TV, “Star Wars” sets and an American Girl doll at the event, the release stated.

Sandy Gould said her son was a “huge ‘Star Wars’ fan,” and there will be costumed Star Wars characters at the event. Members of the 501st Legion Midwest Garrison and the Rebel Legion will be on hand to pose for photos and join the fun, the release stated.

Dr. Rob Baiocchi of Ohio State Medical Center will be present to speak on progress he and his staff have made with donations from Jason’s Hogfan Parties, the release stated.

Kim Wentsis tabbed to lead Yorkville in 2016-17

After Kim Wentsis got over her initial surprise with the news of Luke Engelhardt’s resignation from Yorkville, she knew she wanted the opportunity to lead the Foxes.

Wentsis wasn’t officially hired until July 18, but she spent the entire month of June helping the Foxes prepare for the upcoming 2016-17 season in the hopes of getting the job. She started in the girls basketball program as the freshman coach before moving up to varsity assistant in 2010, and now she begins her 10th year at Yorkville.

“It came as a complete shock, but [Engelhardt] has a great opportunity and I’m happy he’s pursuing his dream,” Wentsis said. “It was a no-brainer. The kids have worked so hard, so for these seniors, I wanted to do it for them first and foremost so they have familiarity with the coaching staff. They’re an amazing group of kids that I love working with.”

Wentsis brought Pat Keller up to the varsity ranks to help with summer league play, and Keller will continue this winter as the varsity assistant coach.

“I told the girls that I didn’t know what would happen, but I was treating this as if I’d gotten the job and I basically worked the rest of the summer and spent the rest of June playing basketball,” Wentsis said.

Yorkville had a productive summer,

playing 40 games in June and finishing with a 31-9 record. The Foxes faced Benet, the two-time defending Class 4A state champion, twice and lost to the Redwings by single digits. Yorkville also faced other competitive Class 4A teams in Geneva league play and came

out of the Morris Shootout with a championship.

The Foxes also enjoyed the unique experience of playing against a team from Norway after Sycamore extended an invitation.

“The Sycamore coach asked if we’d like to play two pickup games with one game against a team from Norway,” Wentsis said. “It ended up being a really cool opportunity for the girls. Alexx Nauman, who is on our basketball team, made Yorkville key chains and so we gave them key chains on a lanyard, and a mom brought Yorkville cookies so it was neat to exchange those things.”

Seniors Katie Nolan and Audrey Macciomei and juniors Lauren Daffenberg and Lindsay Harrison return from a team that finished 25-3.

“Those are the four that will be our core, but we have a ton of talent,” Wentsis said. “We really have a phenomenal group coming back.”

Rounding out the eight returning players are seniors Ellysse Trembley, Natalie Malinowski, Jasmine Bracero and Hayley Farren with newcomers Molly Green and Tayla Van Leeve.

Now, Wentsis turns her attention to open gyms this fall before the season officially begins Oct. 31.

If there’s one lesson Jon Calder has learned in his time as an assistant coach in the Yorkville wrestling program, it’s that success begins with the future generations.

Calder was an assistant coach last season, but was hired in May to replace Tyler Bantz, who resigned after one season. This is his first head coaching position, and he is the Career and Technical Education (CTE) department chair.

“We have one senior, so we’re trying to foster some depth and consistency. This year, our focus is 200 yards

in. That’s what everything is centered around. We’re really working with our developmental players so we make sure we have a solid foundation for the future,” Calder said. “The past few summers we’ve been working with kids’ summer camps. I’ve been fortunate enough to see what happens when Yorkville gets behind something, especially coming from the wrestling program. Hopefully we can get that same momentum built for the golf program.”

Senior Alex Burks is a returning Class 3A sectional qualifier and junior Aiden Miragliotta is back after earning Northern Illinois Big 12 All-Conference honors. Junior AJ Gorey also brings back varsity experience to the Foxes’ lineup. The remaining five to fill out the roster are all juniors: Alex Engelken, Scott Bauder, Justin Hames, Matt Szopinski and Matt Bateman.

Harnish delivers ceremonial first pitch at Cougars’ NIU Night

GENEVA – Chandler Harnish put Northern Illinois football on the map with his arm and legs.

Despite having his playing days in the past, the former dual-threat quarterback used both on Aug. 11 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Kane County Cougars, Harnish was stuck in the passenger seat during pregame traffic and simply got out and ran to the field in time to deliver a strike to a cheering crowd at NIU Night.

“I was incredibly nervous,” Harnish said. “I hadn’t thrown a baseball in years, so I was incredibly nervous walking out there, but it seemed like it went OK. ... I was literally sweating, and I’m not a sweater by nature. I’m out there and I couldn’t even breathe, barely.”

Harnish said he was planning on going with a group of friends to NIU Night and laughed that a couple of friends suggested his name a few weeks ago to the Cougars staff to throw out the first pitch.

There were plenty of fans and well-wishers for Harnish on hand, some congratulating him on a perfect throw as he walked back up to the stands. NIU alum Pam Kluber sat in the front row on the first-base side and smiled as she talked about seeing Harnish play quarterback for the Huskies from 2008 through 2011.

“I just remember him being awesome,” said Kluber, who graduated in 1981. “He’s very approachable. When there’s an approachable athlete, it’s nice. Some of them get on their high horse and forget where they came from, but not him.”

It’s the second or third time Harnish has thrown out a first pitch, he said – however, his hometown Fort Wayne TinCaps had him throw a football instead.

“It’s more my element, so I’m not as nervous,” he said with a laugh. “I think tonight might have been the first

He led the Huskies to a combined record of 22-6 in his final two seasons, earning the Vern Smith Leadership Award for the best player in the MAC his senior season.

After being selected with the last pick of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, he spent three years with the team before being released.
