Schools to spend $400,000 on new computers, software Devices will go to pupils in third grade through high school

news@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville School Board members recently approved spending more than $400,000 for computer hardware and software.

They approved the purchase of the 540 Dell Chromebook computers that will be used for the 1:1 personalized learning initiative and online blended classes.

The computers will be purchased from CDW-G in a 36-month lease for $124,148.06.

Students in the blended classes at Yorkville High School, Yorkville High School Academy and Yorkville Middle School will be the first to receive the computers. Under the program approved by the board in May, every student from third grade through high school will receive one of the devices within the next three years.

During the next school year, staff members will receive training on the Chromebooks and a student help desk will be created next spring to provide support to staff and students.

Students will be able to take the devices home and, if a device goes missing, the district can lock it.

In addition to the computers, the board approved several other hardware and software purchases at last week’s meeting.

They approved the purchase of three Dell servers for $58,959.96 from CDW-G in a four year lease. The purchase will allow teachers to use the latest software for grading and also allow the installation of IEPPLUS software for special education student data. Present software will be installed on the new hardware so teachers can see the current and upgraded versions side by side. After training, the district will switch to the new over Christmas break. The five current eSchool servers the district has will be used for other functions.

Also approved were one-year agreements for new special education records software – $14,484.50 for EasyIEP and $16,400 for IEPPLUS. Special education staff will be able to access both until November when the district will begin using only IEPPLUS. The new software allows unlimited narrative to

Middle school students can earn high school credits Yorkville Middle School students who are taking Spanish I, German I or Algebra I will have the option of earning high school credit for those classes beginning in the fall under a plan recently approved by the school board.

After looking at how other districts handle providing high school credit in middle school, Director of Teaching and Learning Kelley Gallt said administrators found that the districts which have had the most success with the practice have allowed students some choice.

She recommended, and the board approved, allowing students and be entered in student records, as well as charts and graphs. It also is more easily integrated into the district’s eSchool grading system.

Board members purchased content filtering software called Gaggle for $21,800. It will monitor student accounts for language and content. In addition to monitoring words and images, the software notifies the district immediately if a threat is detected.

The software will be used only on student accounts, according to Ryan Adkins, district technology director.

The district’s human resources and finance systems will be moved to a cloud-based environment instead of being kept on district servers. Adkins estimated that the $63,484 payment to Tyler Technologies will save the district $17,000 a year and provide built-in disaster recovery.

Twelve Cisco switches and 60 Cisco wireless access points will be purchased through a two-year lease from CDW-G for $90,291.10. This will meet the demand for wireless access which is increasing as students are allowed to bring their own computers to school or are issued district devices.

The board renewed its software contracts with School Messenger for $12,461.40 and Instructure (Canvas) for $7,963 for a year.

In order to upgrade video surveillance at district buildings, the board also approved the purchase of nine Log-

parents to have the option at the end of the semester.

If they decide to earn the high school credit, the student’s grade will count toward their high school grade point average. Students who are doing well in the class may decide they want to have the grade count while those who are not doing as well may decide against it, she explained.

Even if students take Algebra I for high school credit while in middle school, they will still need to take three years of math once they are at Yorkville High School in order to meet graduation requirements, Gallt said.

Special education students who need specialized technology will receive help from Assistive Technology and Learning Solutions LLC of Montgomery under a one-year contract the board approved for $52,000. The firm will be paid $65 an hour for eight hours a day on 100 days during the 2016-17 school year. Services will be provided by two people, one of whom was an employee of the now-dissolved Kendall County Special Education Cooperative.

Another purchase approved by the board was new math resource material, including paper products, online tools and textbooks, totaling more than $375,000.

The purchases from Pearson Products include $82,475.65 for enVisionmath for sixth to eighth grade, $191,911.38 for enVisionmath for elementary students, and $101,306.62 for high school math. The district will also purchase pre-calculus books for $256 each from Pearson. They will purchase AP calculus books for $135 each from Cengage Learning Products.

Teachers, students and parents will be able to access the Pearson material through the district’s Learning Management System, Canvas.

“It’s been going on for several weeks, ever since the original legal challenges started,” he said.

“It’s a combination of the existing board feeling like something needed to drastically change in order to allay the public’s fear, the donors’ fear, the volunteers’ fear. And the most important thing for both boards – the old board and this new board – since the very first time we talked about it, was making sure that the operations of the food pantry, the several hundred families that go through there every day, are unaffected. They should see no change in their operation – the food and the supplies that they count on will be at the pantry every Thursday.”

tscott@kendallcountynow.com DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller announced Friday that Maria Spaeth, the former director of the Kendall County Food Pantry, died of a drug overdose.

Spaeth, 52, was found unresponsive at her Lake Holiday home on the afternoon of June 21, and was brought by paramedics to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich where she was pronounced dead.

She and her husband, Kenneth, the food pantry’s former treasurer, resigned from the organization June 7. Six days earlier, Yorkville police executed a search warrant on the food pantry building at 208 Beaver St. in Yorkville and at a Kendall County residence.

The search warrants were executed as part of an investigation by police regarding “suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the Kendall County Food Pantry accounts,” according to the Yorkville police.

Miller said Spaeth had lethal amounts of acetaminophen, Xanax and hydrocodone in her system. He said, however, that he could not determine if the death was intentional or accidental.

“There’s nothing there that says it’s a suicide,” Miller said. “These medications are prescribed to her from her physician.”

Miller said Kenneth Spaeth declined to answer questions about his wife’s death.

“I wanted to ask her husband some questions, but his attorney said not to talk to me,” he said. “That’s why I say it’s undetermined. I would push more toward accidental than anything else, but I’m making it undetermined.”

Newark wants more input on garbage service decision

Following last month’s meeting and

discussion of the changes proposed, Mayor Davis has received about 50 comments and more are expected. The item will be on the August agenda.

light of the past year’s state budget problems. She also thanked the board for all they do for the district.

A group of community leaders is poised to take over the operations of the Kendall County Food Pantry, pending legal review, according to food pantry officials.

According to Food Pantry Board President Jeff Young, the pantry is “in the process of accepting a proposal from a group of prominent local community leaders to immediately assume the administration of what will be called the Kendall County Community Food Pantry.”

“This new leadership is committed to ensuring the pantry’s mission of service to the community continues,” Young said.

“They will be actively implementing new legal, accounting, and accountability systems.”

Greg Witek, Little Rock-Fox fire chief and KenCom Executive Board chairman, is the acting board chair for the new Kendall County Community Food Pantry, according to Young.

The other members of the new Kendall County Community Food Pantry Board will be Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird; Rick Bill, food pantry operations management; Stan Free, executive vice president of First National Bank; Oswego Village President Gail Johnson; Millbrook Village President

Jackie Kowalski; Fred Kreinbrink, operations manager for city of Naperville electric; Becky Morphey, Fox Valley Family YMCA Board chairman; Larry Nelson, CEO of Nelson Multimedia and KenCom finance chairman; Tandy Pinter, operations management for the food pantry; Steve Steinwart, president of Meadowvale Dairy; and Grant Wegner, retired chief judge and counsel to Mahoney, Silverman and Cross law firm.

“We are excited and proud that such a prestigious group of community leaders have taken on the very urgent cause of food assistance for our community and look forward to finalizing the transfer of pantry operations,” Young said. “Changes to the website, social media pages and more will be coming in the near future.”

The changes come after a month of turmoil for the food pantry.

No reason for optimism on school funding reform Given Kendall County’s status as having among the highest property taxes in Illinois and the nation, we believe it’s fitting that the county have two representatives appointed to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s newly formed School Funding Reform Commission.

This past week Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, named State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Peru, to the commission, while Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan has appointed State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Joliet, to the panel. Both Rezin’s and Bertino-Tarrant’s legislative districts encompass large areas of Kendall County.

Rauner’s commission has been given the daunting task of reviewing and coming up with a plan to reform Illinois’ out-of-whack school funding

formula over the next several months.

The commission’s final report is due to the governor’s office and General Assembly by next Feb. 1, well after the November election.

Serious reform of the school funding formula is long, long overdue in Illinois.

We can recall attending forums on the need for funding reform hosted by School District 308 in Oswego in the mid-1980s. Like today’s officials, everyone back then agreed that a major change was needed in the method we pay for schools to prevent property taxes in Kendall County and elsewhere from spiraling out of control. But anyone who examined the property tax bill they received in the mail this spring knows all too well that nothing happened.

Over the years there have been periodic attempts to shift the education funding burden from the property tax to the income tax. Those efforts, however, were quickly shot down amid concerns from opponents – both Republican and Democrat – that such a shift would require an income tax hike with no guarantee of a property tax reduction.

At election time in the 1990s, opponents of such measures attacked candidates who supported a property tax cut for income tax hike as supporting a tax hike.

At least Sen. Rezin indicated she has a commendable grasp of what she is getting into in accepting a commission appointment. As she told our reporter, Tony Scott, last week, “Any time you change the school funding

formula, you need to identify new revenue to come into the equation to make this work, as opposed to just changing the funding formula with no new money.”

In other words, Rezin and the commission will likely have to recommend a tax hike as part of any workable funding reform plan. We would hope that any tax hike would be tied to a corresponding decrease in property taxes.

We wish Rezin and the rest of the commission well in this latest effort to change the way we all pay for public education in this state.

Unfortunately, until a majority of state lawmakers are willing to set aside their own political interests and act in the interest of the state’s taxpayers and schools, we’re not expecting the school funding problem will ever be fixed.

FORUM To the Editor: Since Dec. 14, 2012, the day 20 children and six adults were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, there has been at least one school shooting every week, according to Everytown For Gun Safety, an advocacy group.

This does not include guns fired off campus after the shooter had the gun in the school or confiscated guns. In at least 30 instances a person was killed.

Several weeks ago a man gunned down 49 people in a night club. Then Obama gave a speech for the 14th time about a mass shooting under his presidency, the sixth in the last year.

In the past three years we have had zero Congressional hearings on gun safety. In that same time we have had 33 hearings on Benghazi, one which included a marathon 11-hour grilling of Hillary Clinton, who was asked the same question over 3,194 times. According to the Benghazi Research Center there were over 252 witnesses called, 100,000 documents read and over $7.5 million spent with the conclusion by the panel that it was a big waste of time.

Additionally, there were three hearings on emails that Hillary Clinton had in her possession with the final hearing concluding with the FBI director, James Comey, being interrogated by the Benghazi committee over why his agency found no criminal activity. The director testified that he used thousands of man hours involving dozens of agents to track down leads. The conclusion again is that the hearings were a waste of time.

To the Editor: I read Donna Rasch’s letter of June 30 in the Record and it reminded me of what I have been meaning to write about for quite some time. The pole barns on Hydraulic Street are only part of the problem.

What about the huge pile of metal scrap just teeming with bacteria just waiting for some youngsters to decide to climb upon it? What about the saw mill with the weeds and debris? Don’t we have a weed ordinance?

It is amazing to me, considering the millions of dollars that have been spent on the riverfront, the rapids and the dam.

tendees were able to make suggestions on highway tools such as entrance re-locations, raised medians, traffic signal controls and roundabout controls.

The typical roadway project is developed and implemented using a threephase process. Currently, the Route 47 and I-88 interchange is in Phase I, which is the preliminary engineering and environmental studies stage that takes three to five years. There are five steps to this stage, which started in 2015. The project is about halfway through with the phase, so it is expected to last until about the end of 2017.

The next phase will be the contract plan preparation and land acquisition phase. This phase will last another two years. Then, the construction phase begins, which is another two to three years. The entire project is not expected to be completed for about five more years.

“It seems like a long time,” Michels said. “But we are a lot closer than we have been in the past, and we are confident the project will go through.”

Route 47 is primarily a rural, northsouth state highway that runs 170 miles from central Illinois to Wisconsin, and I-88 takes travelers 140 miles from western Illinois to metropolitan

Chicago. This particular section of I-88 is under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Tollway and is designated the Reagan Memorial Tollway.

The exact section being studied includes the village of Sugar Grove and unincorporated Blackberry and Sugar Grove townships. It includes Route 47 from Waubonsee Community College to Green Road. The study limits on I-88 extend approximately one-half mile east and west of Route 47.

The input and suggestions from the May meeting went to an external firm for review, and then the alternative development and evaluation process will go through multiple rounds of evaluations. Alternatives will be screened out through the process and those that meet the purpose and needs of the project best will pass through to the next round.

Although a date was not initially set, attendees will be able to review the results of the screened alternatives at the next public meeting. The remaining alternatives will then be studied further and additional input will again be available.

SUGAR GROVE – A study aimed at eventually creating a full-access interchange at Route 47 and Interstate 88 is progressing, with officials gearing up to pitch their plans to the Federal Highway Authority in September.

The village of Sugar Grove initiated the Sugar Grove Parkway (Route 47) at the Reagan Memorial Tollway (Interstate 88) Interchange Improvement Study to create a full-access tollway interchange at Route 47; the interchange now offers access points to and from the west only.

At an earlier meeting in May, about 100 people that attended were able to hear about the work completed to date, view route alternatives, and provide input and suggestions on interchange variations based on the purpose and needs of the project, said Peter Johnston, head engineer on the project from GREAF–Chicago, an engineering, planning and design firm.

“The input and suggestions from the first public meeting and the CAG (community advisory group) meetings we’ve had over the last year have all been incorporated into a range of alternative interchanges,” Johnston said.

“It seems like a long time. But we are a lot closer than we have been in the past, and we are confident the project will go through.”

Kendall OKs zoning for wedding venue in split vote

tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board approved a special use zoning Tuesday for a new banquet venue planned for a 17-acre historic farm in Kendall Township south of Yorkville.

The venue, at 9111 Ashley Road, will be owned and operated by Ron and Dave Walker, the owners of Whitetail Ridge Golf Club on Route 126.

John Sterrett, the county’s senior planner, said the venue was planning to offer weddings as well as other events like bridal or baby showers. Sterrett said the county allows such activities in agriculturally-zoned areas as a special use if they meet a series of conditions.

The board voted 5-3 in favor of the special use zoning, which includes 19 special restrictions on the usage of the property. Board members Bob Davidson, John Purcell, Matthew Prochaska, Lynn Cullick and Jeff Wehrli voted in favor of the special use, while board Chairman John Shaw and board members Judy Gilmour and Dan Koukol voted against the measure. Board members Scott Gryder and Elizabeth Flowers were absent for the vote.

The Kendall County Board approved a special use permit for this farm at 9111 Ashley Road in unincorporated Kendall Township, just south of Yorkville, to become a wedding venue.

The venue will be run by the owners of Whitetail Ridge Golf Club. as did a special zoning hearing officer.

However, the County Board’s Planning, Building, and Zoning Committee voted 4-1 in favor of it with the 19 conditions.

Ron Walker said he expects the venue to hold anywhere from 30 to 50 weddings “in a tremendous year.” The operators are restricted from holding events of 25 or more people on more than 60 days per year, due to Health Department codes, according to Sterrett.

Walker said he and his brother saw a need for farm wedding venues going

back three or four years, and he said that Whitetail frequently gets calls about that type of venue.

Neighbors of the property, including Tom Schnable Jr. and Vicky Schnable, who live across the road from the farm, voiced objections to the proposal, citing concerns about excess noise, traffic, and potential drunk drivers leaving the venue. Gregg Ingemunson, a Yorkville attorney representing the Schnables, said there is a negative impact to his clients.

“There’s no gain at all to the public for having a banquet hall facility across from a residence,” he said.

Tom Schnable Jr. said he visited a pair of country wedding venues in Kendall County on a recent weekend night, and that he could clearly hear music near both venues. He said he spoke to a neighbor of a wedding venue on Johnson Road in NaAuSay Township and that the neighbor had complained frequently about the noise from music at the venue and that he wanted it closed down.

Ron Walker said Whitetail Ridge has not had noise complaints in its 10 years of operation, and has never had the police called to the venue.

One of the neighbors said he was told that the sheriff’s office was called about noise complaints with one venue and that deputies said they could not ticket the venue. Wehrli said the county should enforce its noise ordinance better, noting that the process now is that the venue loses its special use if there are enough complaints to the county about noise. The county does not ticket the venue, he said.

After the vote, Tom Schnable paused before answering what he thought about the board’s decision.

“They’ve just pretty much taken my house away from me,” he said.

some pretty big cities in it now.”

The sheriff’s office has grown greatly as an agency since Koster began his tenure. When he started, the sheriff’s office was headquartered in the old jail at the corner of West Madison and South Main streets in downtown Yorkville. The agency moved from the old jail when the current Public Safety Center was completed in 1992.

“Boy, that was a totally different world,” Koster said. “There were 12 bunks in the jail. We didn’t have corrections deputies, we had part-time jailers at that time that ran the jail.

There was no air conditioning in the place, so in the summer it was hot – it was hot for the deputies, it was hot for the inmates, it was hot for everybody.”

“It was like living in the 1920s in the 1990s,” he added.

Koster said the amount of information the deputies need to know has expanded as well.

“When I started in 1990, the combined statutes and vehicle code was probably three-quarters of an inch thick; now that same book, which is what we use for everything that we do, is almost five inches thick,” he said.

“The number and the complexity of the laws – and more and more come out every year – it never stops.”

Some positive memories of his time

in the sheriff’s office include serving as a liaison for the U.S. Secret Service in August of 2005 during President George W. Bush’s visit to the Caterpillar plant in Oswego Township.

“At the last minute, as a surprise, the Secret Service team actually got me a private meeting with the president – I got to meet him in a private setting, which was really cool,” Koster said.

Koster also recalled making an appearance on the TV show “Without A Trace” for an episode involving a missing Plano woman.

Sheriff Dwight Baird said Koster is a “great guy to work with.”

“I am extremely proud of Chief Koster’s nearly 27 years of service to the sheriff’s office with an impeccable service record,” Baird said. “I am equally as proud to have served with him as a patrol deputy and then moving through the command ranks to once again work together this last 19 months. I have deep respect for Scott and will greatly miss his knowledge, experience and sense of humor. He never disappointed or let me down, not once. I consider it a distinct honor and privilege to have worked with Scott and will always cherish our service together at the sheriff’s office

In January 1990, the movie “Born on the Fourth of July” was tops at the box office, Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” was burning up the music charts, and Kendall County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Koster began his career in law enforcement as a deputy at the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

Koster is retiring at the end of this month after 26 and a half years at the agency, and six years as its deputy chief. Scott Koster Koster is moving to Texas after the first of the year, as his wife has job opportunities there, he said.

Starting as a deputy, Koster moved up the ranks in the department and expanded his role there, becoming one of the agency’s first community policing officers in the mid-1990s. He was named patrol sergeant in 1999, detective sergeant in charge of investigations in 2003, criminal division commander in 2005, and support services division commander in 2007. He was appointed as deputy chief in 2010 by former Sheriff Richard Randall.

Koster said public service runs in

his family, as his father and an uncle were Aurora police officers, and another uncle was a Geneva firefighter who retired as deputy chief at that department. He said he “always kind of had in the back of my head that [law enforcement] might be something I was going to do.”

“I had the public service thing in the family, but I didn’t really think that I was going to go into police work probably until I got into college,” he said.

Koster was taking sociology and psychology classes in college and thought those would tie in nicely with a law enforcement career.

“I thought, what better way to engage with people and learn about and deal with sociological and psychological issues than police work?”

Koster said it was a challenge keeping up with the growth in Kendall County at the beginning of the 2000s, but that despite its population growth the county remains a community with great character.

“Kendall County still has a great character, in that it feels like a small community, even though it’s grown so much,” he said. “One of the things I’ve always loved about Kendall County is the welcomingness of the people and the small town character that the county has maintained, even though it has

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Two hurt in crash Yorkville police reported that Stephanie Muir, 34, of the 1900 block of Oshkosh Avenue, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and a juvenile passenger in her vehicle were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 47 at Galena Road at 11:07 a.m. July 18. Police said Muir and the juvenile were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Muir was ticketed for failure to yield and driving without a valid license.

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash was not hurt, police said.

Leisure St. damage The driver’s side front tire of a vehicle parked in the 200 block of Leisure Street in Yorkville was found damaged July 15, police reported. Police said damage was estimated at $210.

No one was hurt in the crash, according to police.

Motorist ticketed in crash Yorkville police ticketed Elijah Miekiewicz, age not given, of the 1000 block of Evergreen Lane, Yorkville, with driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a crash on Route 34 at Cannonball Trail at 3:46 p.m. July 15. Police said no one was hurt in the crash.

School bus incident Yorkville police responded to an incident involving a school bus on private property in the 7400 block of Mill Road at 11:45 a.m. July 15. Police said the bus driver drove over a large rock with the right front tire on the bus and it jolted the juvenile passengers on the bus, causing some to fall out of their seats.

Police said some of the juveniles were injured and were taken to a doctor by their parents at a later time.

Two ticketed in crash Yorkville police ticketed two motorists after they were involved in a property damage accident on Route 34 at Eldamain Road on July 15 at 12:20 p.m. Police said Jack A. Nedrow, 67, of the 100 block of Cook Court, Somonauk, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, while Joel O. Hernandez-Ayala, 32, of the 1500 block of Creek Road, Plano, was ticketed for driving without insurance.

Vehicle burglary A total of 176 tablets of Norco, a Symbicort inhaler and a GPS device were stolen from a vehicle parked in the 100 block of Commercial Drive in Yorkville sometime between July 12 and 14, police reported. Police noted that entry to the vehicle was not forced.

Scammed out of $1,200 Yorkville police said a local resident was the victim of a fraud while completing a transaction online July 6. Police said the victim told them that she sold an item online and when she received payment it was for substantially more than the agreed-upon amount. Police said the person that sent the check to the victim instructed her to deposit the check then return $1,120 to a person in Arkansas for moving fees. After doing this, the victim learned the original check had been canceled and $1,120 had been deducted from her bank account.

Motorist injured, ticketed A Plano resident, Ryan Fitzsimmons, age not given, was injured in a single-vehicle crash on Galena Road east of Route 47 on July 14 at 9:05 a.m., Yorkville police reported. Police said Fitzsimmons’ vehicle swerved off the roadway, struck a culvert, became airborne for approximately 30 feet and then landed on its side. Fitzsimmons was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

Police said he was ticketed for improper lane usage and driving on a suspended license.

Yorkville resident celebrates 100th birthday KENDALL COUNTY RECORD

Nearly 200 people gathered at the Yorkville American Legion on Sunday, July 10, to celebrate the 100th birthday of Laura DuMont.

DuMont has been a resident of Yorkville for more than 30 years and before that was a resident of Aurora.

Relatives and friends gathered from all over the country, including California, Texas, Alabama, Wisconsin, Maryland, West Virginia, Florida, and those who still live in Illinois.

DuMont was born in Corinth, Wisconsin, on July 12, 1916, and upon graduating from high school set out on her own to find work and begin her life as a wife and mother, settling in Aurora in 1936.

She is now a great-great-grandmother with living descendants numbering more than 50. Some sorrows in her life have included the loss of her husband and three daughters.

Her son, James DuMont Sr., who hosted the celebration along with his wife, Betty, lives in Genoa.

James DuMont paid a special tribute to his mother at the event by singing the song “Mother” to her with the

DuMont has lived through a lot of history including World Wars I and II and the Great Depression. She is amazingly healthy and independent.

When Laura was asked what she attributes her long life to, she answered, joking, “I don’t smoke, I don’t chew, and I don’t go with guys who do.”

DuMont is very active even at 100 years. She is at church every Sunday and active in Bible Study and Ladies Aid at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Boulder Hill. She also is a lifetime

member of TOPS and never misses their weekly meetings.

One of her passions is writing poetry. She writes a Christmas poem every year which she sends to all the relatives and friends and is published at her church. She has written a 100th birthday poem which gives a very good synopsis of her life over the last 100 years.

Recently, she has been invited to go to grade school classes to talk to children about her experiences and is always well received by the students.

The family has decided that they will get together again in 2026 to celebrate her 110th birthday and are looking forward to that event in 10 years.

Rezin said she was optimistic about getting something done.

“I’m always optimistic,” she said.

“I did sit on the [Education Funding Advisory Committee], which was a commission two years ago where we did this same exact thing and it started off very bipartisan, nonpolitical. Unfortunately, when it came to writing the bill, it became political, because we were not included in the crafting of the legislation. So, we’re here again, but this time this commission is under the governor and Secretary Beth Purvis, who both parties have tremendous respect for. And it’s our hope that we can keep everybody focused and present a bill that was written with the full cooperation of both parties and call it for a vote.”

Bertino-Tarrant said a fellow senator, Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, has been championing school funding reform for several years.

“I love law enforcement, and I love the people in law enforcement,” he said.

“I was at a conference one day and the speaker said, ‘This is a place where I would leave my kid if there was an emergency with any one of you – what other place where you go into a conference room full of a thousand people can you say that?’ And that’s the caliber and quality of people you have in law enforcement, and the brotherhood and sisterhood that you have in law enforcement.

“Watching the compassion that the people I work with have for the public that they serve is really one of the greatest parts of my career, and it’s really left an indelible mark on me,” he said.

The issue of how to fund schools in Illinois, and changing from a formula that’s heavily reliant on property tax revenues, has been an ongoing battle in Springfield for decades.

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Peru, and Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Joliet, who both represent Kendall County in the General Assem- State Sen. bly, have been appointJennifer ed to the bipartisan Bertinostate School Funding Tarrant Reform Commission.

The pair join a group of fellow Democratic and Republican state legislators and other state officials, including Education Secretary Beth Purvis; Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti; James Dimas, secretary of the Department of Human Services; Jennifer Hammer, deputy chief of staff for policy; and Jodi Scott, regional superintendent of schools for Henderson, Knox, Mercer, and Warren counties.

Purvis has been chosen as the chairman of the commission.

Rezin said the issue of school fund-

ing reform in Illinois is “a complicated topic, no question.”

“This is a topic that’s been in the forefront for numerous years,” she said. “Our hope is to present a bipartisan report and hopefully vote on our recommendation that will allow more fair and equitable funding. And any time you change the school funding formula, you need to identify new revenue to come into the equation to make this work, as opposed State Sen. to just changing the Sue Rezin funding formula with no new money; then you have winners and losers.”

Rezin acknowledged that the state has “an over-reliance on property taxes to fund education.” She said she has heard concerns from taxpayers, but also from school district officials.

“Bar none, this is the single biggest issue that people bring up to me when I’m knocking on doors in Kendall County and Will County,” she said. “Property taxes are high and they continue to go up; however, 70 percent of your property tax bill goes to the school districts. Property taxes are a very real issue, but when I speak with the local superintendents or lo-

Just trying to get through. Most people will finish within the [50-minute] time frame,” Kiest said. “My husband, [co-owner] Dave [Kiest], has an extensive military background. He was a former Green Beret/Special Forces Medic, hence the military movements.”

“We welcome spectators,” Kiest said. “We’ll usually get between 50 and 60 competitors, and maybe another 50 to 100 spectators.”

A military-style challenge will take place at a Yorkville gym this weekend.

Yorkville’s Bare Bones Crossfit will host its sixth annual Freedom Challenge, beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 23. Eight events will challenge participants, beginning at the gym, located at 1204 Deer St., in Yorkville, and traveling to the Fox River and back. Organizers said they have 11 teams, including many other CrossFit gyms.

“So far we have teams from Sycamore CrossFit, CrossFit Sugar Grove, CrossFit Exemplify in Morris, CrossFit Amplify in Lisle, CrossFit Leverage in West Chicago, CrossFit Olaf in North Aurora,” Bare Bones co-owner Melissa Kiest said last week.

Teams must be composed of four members, and only two can be male.

All team members will have 50 minutes to complete 10 “movements,” which include an approximately onemile run from the gym to the Fox River, a four-person zodiac movement on the river, a ruck sack march – where participants will carry 45- or 65-pound sacks on their backs – back to the gym.

in 7v7 event to close offseason training

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com As summer workouts wrap up this week, Yorkville football players will have a moment to catch their breath before the real work begins.

The Foxes traveled to Oswego on Tuesday morning for a 7v7 competition and lineman challenge in the shadow of Ken Pickerill Stadium, and head coach Dan McGuire took the opportunity to take some final notes on his incoming group.

“In terms of our scheme, we’re not doing a whole lot different. We’re trying to build something so we have some continuity at all our levels,” said McGuire, who begins his second season at the helm.

“In terms of our players, we’re going to miss a lot of our seniors. We graduated some great leaders, so we definitely have some holes to fill. We have kids who are capable, but they’re not really game-tested yet. We have athleticism and we have to see what happens when these lights turn on, and we don’t know that yet.”

Yorkville will meet one more time on Thursday before taking a two-week hiatus. The first day of practice for the 2016 season arrives on Aug. 8 when the Foxes turn their focus to preparing for West Aurora. The Foxes visit the Blackhawks on Aug. 26 in the Week 1 non-conference game at 7:30 p.m.

“I think this is our best day we’ve had all summer in terms of competing. Oswego is a great program and it’s a good measuring stick for ourselves to see where we’re at,” said McGuire. “It’s really tough to tell a whole lot without any pads on, but I thought we competed. We wanted to get some jump balls and we finally did that for the first time, which was great to see. I think we made strides this summer and it was good to see what we did today.”

Yorkville is coming off of a 4-5 season, and in addition West Aurora, the Foxes will add a second new addition to their schedule, hosting Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights) on Sept. 2. That game is the first of three consecutive home games for the Foxes.
