No public comment offered at school board hearings on pay waiver, budget

news@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville School Board members held two public hearings last week on an administrative pay waiver and a budget amendment. No one from the public spoke at either hearing.

The board amended the current year’s budget to transfer $1,544,950.83 from the Operations and Maintenance Fund to Capital Projects to cover the balance of the expenses for the additions and renovations at Yorkville High School. This brings the total spent this year on those projects to $3,508,283.80.

tendent for Finance and Operations, also told the board he is “very concerned” about what the next year will bring in state funding, as several proposals were still pending. He said Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposal would mean between $2.6 and $4.5 million more for the district, while other options would leave the district’s General State Aid (GSA) flat or reduced.

He said there are also questions about whether districts will receive all of the scheduled GSA payments and categorical aid, particularly transportation aid.

news@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville School Board members approved several personnel changes at their meeting last week, including hiring a few summer school teachers.

Yorkville Middle School summer program teachers hired were John Bennett, Elizabeth Peterson, Brian Long, Jill Snell and Ben Rollins in math, and Dawn Serio in language arts.

Those hired for the Summer Experience program at Grande Reserve Elementary School were Hailey Plum, early childhood/kindergarten; Tracey Jackson, kindergarten; Suzanne Pratt, Bridget Winz and Annette Spino, first grade; Tracey Darnell and Rhonda McKeever, second grade; Noelle Williams, Kathryn Dillon and Michael Lauderdale, third grade; Laura Garbe, fourth and fifth grade; and Heather Diverde, secretary.

Also hired were Patrick Graff, first grade teacher at Circle Center Grade School; Michele Dobbs, social studies teacher at Yorkville High School; Patrick Jecmen, special education teacher at Yorkville Middle School; Laura Tuma, half-time physical education teacher at Yorkville Intermediate and Yorkville Grade Schools; Melinda Lasky, Student Services Coordinator- elementary; and Frederick Harrison, district computer technician.

Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSA) hired include Andrea Flod-

berg and Meghan Kerr for strategic planning; Nathan Schroll and Kimber Larson for curriculum; and Kevin Bannon for data and accountability.

Retirement plans, effective this year, were approved for Melissa Watson, Bristol Bay Elementary School librarian, and Sheryl Mitchell, special education teacher.

Jacquelyn Cudebec was hired as an assistant volleyball coach and Robert Krawczyk as an assistant golf coach for the high school.

The board accepted Krawczyk’s resignation as an assistant girls soccer coach, as well as resignations from Anthony Garcia as assistant football coach and spring athletic supervision; and from Matthew Wunderlich as assistant boys’ soccer coach.

Romano explained that Yorkville’s administrative costs increased more than five percent because of the addition of a position, Director of Student Services, to oversee special education programs. Those programs had been administered by the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative which will be dissolved June 30.

Sheriff’s Office puts county jail inmates to work SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is implementing an Inmate Work Program.

The program is a work detail consisting of inmates from the county jail that will perform manual labor throughout the county such as picking up liter from township roadways and doing work at the Kendall County Fair grounds off Route 71 near Yorkville, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

The statement notes that during the times the work is being performed, deputies will be assigned to the detail with the inmate workers. Deputies will be with the inmate workers at all times while the work is being performed to ensure the safety of the public and the inmate workers. Signs will be placed in the area notifying the public that a work detail is in progress.

According to the statement, the inmates assigned to the program are approved for work outside of the jail by the commander of the corrections division.

Inmates selected for the work program are non-violent offenders who have followed the rules of the jail and have had no disciplinary issues while incarcerated. They also have shown a willingness to work.

Sheriff Dwight A. Baird said, “The goal of the program is to help non-profit agencies and government agencies with their needs for manual labor while affording inmates the opportunity to give back to the community in a positive way.”

mschury@kendallcountynow.com The former executive director of the Kendall County Food Pantry, Maria Spaeth, was found dead in her Lake Holiday home Tuesday, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller confirmed.

Miller said that Spaeth, 52, was transported to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich and pronounced dead at approximately 3:20 p.m. The cause of death is still being determined, with an autopsy scheduled for today morning, according to Miller. He said the results of that autopsy will not be known for at least two to three weeks pending a

toxicology report.

Spaeth and her husband, Ken, the pantry’s treasurer, resigned their positions June 7, according to Brian Young, an attorney representing the organization.

Young confirmed the Food Pantry Board had accepted the Spaeths’ letter of resignation.

Young, an attorney with the law firm of Morse & Bolduc and Dinos, is the son of Jeff Young, a member of the board who has been appointed interim chair of the board and executive director.

Brian Young did not say if the resignations were related to a possible theft

of funds from the pantry that police say they are currently investigating.

Charges have not been filed in that case and police have said it is an ongoing investigation.

As part of their investigation, police said in a statement that they served search warrants on the food pantry building at 208 Beaver St. and on a personal residence located in Kendall County on June 1.

Kendall County Board agrees to post job description for kennel manager

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County is looking for another full-time staff member to work at the county’s busy animal control facility in Yorkville.

The county board approved posting the job description for a kennel manager/animal control officer during a meeting June 7. The facility currently has only one full-time director, Laura Pawson, who was appointed earlier this year. Animal control is also staffed by volunteers and part-time workers.

Board members supporting posting the position said that Pawson needs some help since she is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the facility has gotten busier over the last few years.

“We need a kennel manager to be

able to take care of the facility and then as an animal control officer.

She would fill the other side of that [director position] where right now they are asking some of the part-time employ- John ees to be available 24/7 Purcell and because of the new laws we can’t do that,” board member Jeff Wehrli said.

Wehrli added there is money available for this position in the budget. He added that the county would be able to cut down on the amount of hours part-time employees work at the facility once they hire a second full-time person.

Board member John Purcell said he would support the new hire, which came as a surprise to fellow board member Bob Davidson, who voted against posting the position.

“There is one full-time person over there and I can tell you she is working really hard,” Purcell said.

Purcell, who usually balks at hiring new employees, said in this instance he could see why they should add another staff member.

Davidson briefly took Purcell to task for supporting a new hire.

“Did I hear you correct? You are supporting adding a full-time employee to the counBob ty?” Davidson asked Davidson Purcell. “Did I hear you correctly? Thank you; I guess I couldn’t believe I heard that.”

“There is one person there now, not five or six,” Purcell responded.

Board member Dan Koukol noted that the department is “self funded,” meaning their budget is funded entirely by fees and funds they collect from residents. Purcell added that the facility is able to pay salaries and benefits for employees and has money set aside for capital improvement projects they may need.

“It’s still county money,” Davidson responded.

“This is getting out of control here,” Chairman John Shaw said, shortly before the clerk took a rolecall vote.

The board voted 7-2 in favor of posting the position with Davidson and Koukol casting the two “no” votes.

Touring Vietnam Wall will provide a teachable moment Area residents should mark June 29-July 3, 2017, on their calendars and make plans to stop by Prairie Point Community Park between Plainfield and Grove roads in Oswego.

What visitors to the park will find there on those days will be a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. For nearly 30 years, the Vietnam Moving Wall, which bears the names of the 58,315 U.S. servicemen and women killed in the war from 1959 to 1975, has been traveling the country to honor the memory of those who served and paid the ultimate price in our nation’s most controversial war.

Until now, the wall has been on display just twice in the Fox Valley area, both times in Aurora. The wall made its first appearance in 1988 in McCullough Park along the banks of the Fox River and, most recently, in 2013 on the grounds of West Aurora High School.

The Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, village of Oswego, Oswegoland Park District, School District 308 and Oswego Chamber of Commerce should all be commended for their work to bring the wall to the village.

We visited the wall both times when it was in Aurora and found it a profoundly moving experience.

Just like the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., the wall serves to bring home the reality of the human cost of the war to the communities wherever it is displayed. Family members, fellow servicemen and friends come to search the wall for the names of their loved ones who were lost. Many leave mementos at the base of the wall, just as they continue to do at the memorial in Washington, D.C. Among the especially touching mementos we saw left at the wall in Aurora in 1988 and again in 2013 were faded copies of newspaper articles reporting the story of loved ones who had grown up in Aurora and surrounding communities being reported either missing or killed in action.

We are especially pleased to see that School District 308 is a participant in the committee to bring the wall to Oswego. We are hopeful that District 308 students and staff will be as actively involved in presenting the wall as the students at West Aurora were three years ago.

At West the students created a stirring display by covering the front lawn of the school and a large athletic field with American flags as a tribute to the fallen Vietnam veterans and assisted in keeping a 24/7 vigil at the wall while it was on display.

It was also heartening to see so many West students – born decades after the war ended – at the wall standing with Vietnam veterans, their family members and friends. With the passage of time and the memories of that difficult era in our nation’s history fading a bit more each day, it is of paramount importance that today’s students and their parents learn about the Vietnam War and the sacrifices that so many made on our behalf. The arrival of the wall in Oswego next June will present a welcome opportunity to do just that.

Java Man’s big molar, the origin of June’s name and other observations REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Well, we made it through the rousing celebration of Father’s Day, and now we’re drawing a bead on Independence Day. The kids are well out of school, more warm weather is on the way, the swimming pools are open, and summer is officially here and has been for nearly a full week.

Here’s what The Old Farmers Almanac has to say about our shiny, brand new season: “The summer solstice heralds the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The timing of the summer solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its northernmost point of the equator. In 2016, summer begins with the solstice on the 21st at 12:24 a.m. EDT. The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).”

Sitting here pondering the summer of 2016, I heard the mail carrier arrive and so wandered out to bring in today’s harvest of junk mail, of which there was much. Not all junk mail is created equally, however, since some is more edifying than others. I’ve been collecting some of the better junky bits, and, with no further ado, here are a number of things I probably never would even have thought about if I hadn’t opened all the junk mail that arrived at the Matile Manse each and every day that little post office jeep showed up out front: Among the largest human teeth scientists have found belonged to Java Man – better known as Homo erectus, who lived it up around a million years ago. Obviously, it was a lost orthodontic opportunity.

June is another of our heathen months, named as it is after Juno, wife of the Roman god Jupiter, who also got a giant planet named for him – but not a month like his little woman.

On the other hand, some believe June’s name derives from the Latin iuniores, meaning “younger ones,” as opposed to maiores (“elders”), which some believe is the derivation of the month of May’s name. So you can take your pick. I’m going with Lady Juno.

June might only have 30 days, but it also has the longest daylight hours here in the Northern Hemisphere.

Need some extra-large ice cubes? Make them in a muffin tin and they’ll keep the old punch bowl cooler longer.

Tabasco Sauce is named for the state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico, but I’m sure you knew that already.

Financial update from Newark schools

To the Editor: As you may know by now, the impasse at the state capitol continues as legislators and the governor were unable to reach an agreement on a budget – again.

In the coming days, you will hear a great deal of speculation pertaining to whether schools will open in the fall.

Without a state appropriation for K-12 education in fiscal 2017 (begins July 1, 2016), many school districts will face dire circumstances. For Newark Grade School District 66, state funding comprises over 16 percent of our total revenue spending.

The district has fund reserves that will allow the opening of schools and should sustain the schools through the first semester. This year’s budget impasse would mean that the dysfunction at the capitol has again resulted in a shift of the cost of educating Illinois’ children to the local property taxpayers.

The top priority for our elected officials must be to enact a budget that includes adequate funding for public schools for the upcoming school year. This will ensure that schools across the state open on time and are adequately funded for the full year. A school funding model still in debate in the legislature may be the most sound and fair long-term answer to having adequate and equitable school funding

Actually, I would consider his comments tasteless, showing us once again he would rather advance his personal agenda before he fights anything global (like terrorism) in nature. His administration has done little to actually address global terrorism, but he certainly likes to talk about the little stuff he does by making it appear big.

Terrorism is alive, well and in a state of resurgence, but it means nothing to this administration. Just look at the funds directed toward Obama’s immigration and amnesty agenda. Terrorism is distant from a financial perspective, making it clear to me what his priorities really are.

Sadly, for those who still turn on the TV to listen to him, all they will hear is “hate,” “fear,” and “prejudice” mentioned. We are a poorly led group, led by a president who is on his way out, yet still hankers for his own agendas and policies to be rammed down our throats until the day he leaves.

And while doing that, he wants to leave a legacy that further divides us so that we cannot stand united when we most need unification.

To the Editor: It’s interesting that Barack Obama has renewed his attacks calling for more gun control in the wake of the recent Orlando shootings. It’s also interesting that, in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Americans’ access to firearms in general was never brought up as an effective way to counter terrorism. That’s because there are far better ways, ways that Barack Obama refuses to look at or acknowledge.

Student catches error in textbook

news@kendallcountynow.com When Katherine Strauss was teaching her second grade class at Bristol Grade School about Antarctica, Griffin Glenn was paying close attention.

He remembered that the chilly land of 5,405,430 square miles is actually a desert. Even though it may not seem to fit that definition, it is the driest of the world’s continents with very little annual precipitation.

When the class went on to read a book about deserts by AV2 by Weigl, Griffin told Strauss that he needed to talk to the author because he had spotted an error. That book said the Sahara, at 3.5 million square miles, was the world’s largest desert.

His teachers, Strauss and Stephanie McHugh, and BGS Principal Kathryn Schafermeyer called the book publisher in New York City. They were asked to send proof of their claim about the error. They did and the publisher has agreed to correct future editions to specify that the Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert.

Bristol Grade School’s copy of the desert book already has the correction noted in it – along with Griffin’s photo.

Sheriff responds to harassing phone calls from taxpayer

Decorate a shoebox as a float for the 4th of July parade at the Chapel on the Green, 107 W. Center St., Yorkville, across from Town Square Park. Floats will not need wheels or a tongue or tow vehicle – just the decorated box simulating a hay rack or flatbed trailer.

Shoebox Floats may be the work of one individual or a club, group or organization.

There is no entry fee and a “People’s Choice Awards” voting will take place.

Parade, fireworks scheduled as part of Yorkville’s Fourth of July celebration KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The city of Yorkville Fourth of July Committee and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department have released the following schedule of events for the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration: Parade lineup is 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Yorkville High School. You do not need to inform the committee of your participation within the parade. All floats should show up at the Yorkville High School the morning of the parade.

The parade will start at 9 a.m.

Town Square Park activities will follow the parade immediately until 1 p.m. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Kids’ foot races, rides and water fights will be held in the park along with a performance by the Yorkville Community Band.

Fireworks will begin at dusk from the corner of Route 47 and Countryside Parkway. Before the fireworks, the Yorkville Big Band will perform at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home at 8 p.m.

The Newark Fourth of July Committee has been hard at work to plan a full slate of activities for the upcoming holiday weekend.

The Newark Fire Department will sponsor water fights June 25.

On July 2, the annual street dance and beer garden will be on Jackson Street near Main Street. This year’s band is “Whiskey Romance,” sponsored by Newark BP. On July 3, the Newark Lutheran Church will sponsor an ice cream social at the church. July 4 begins with a flag raising at 8 a.m. at the downtown park.

Parade lineup begins at 9 a.m. at the Newark High School parking lot on Chicago Road. The parade steps off at

10 a.m. led by Grand Marshals Jeff and Patsy Mathre.

Following the parade, activities center around Jackson Street and Main Street and the Newark Fire House.

5B’s will serve chicken and pork chop barbecue. Friends of the Library will offer hot dogs. Fern Dell Museum will be open until 3 p.m. and there will be an antique tractor show on Main Street near the Blacksmith Shop.

The kids’ pedal pull will be in the park and the egg drop will begin at noon. A silent auction will be ongoing until 1 p.m. The numbered button drawing will take place at 1 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded. The Newark American Legion will sponsor a car rally at their facility on Fennel Road in the afternoon.

The owners of Parkview Christian Academy in Yorkville recently entered into a contact to purchase Club 47 from Ron Walker of Walker Custom Homes.

Benson has been with the school since 2013.

“We started with eight students and every year they would reclaim another room until we are bursting out now,” she said, adding, “Well, more than bursting out because we have 70 students at another location already.

We’ve been growing at every grade level for two or three years now.”

The private Christian school has seen its enrollment grow in recent years as well. In the 2013-14 school

year, Benson said the school had 208 students, and this school year 325 students were enrolled.

The Center Street Campus will remain as a preschool and early elementary school, which goes up to sixth grade. Once the Club 47 purchase is complete, the building will house the fifth grade through 12th grade.

Why is the enrollment increasing now? Benson acknowledged “that’s a really big question.”

She noted that the school has obtained academic accreditation from Christian School International and

Parkview Christian Academy recently agreed to purchase the Club 47 Fitness building in Yorkville to meet expanding enrollment.

Parkview Christian Academy’s Superintendent Deborah Benson said the school has entered into a contract to purchase the club building on July 1, 2017. Members of the health club will still be able to use the facility until that date, Benson said.

Parkview is purchasing the building from Ron Walker of Walker Custom Homes for an undisclosed amount of money.

The Christian school has classrooms in the club facility and at the former Yorkville High School building at Center Parkway in downtown Yorkville. Taking over Club 47 would be an expansion for Parkview.

The school currently operates five classrooms in the building and plans to open an additional four before the start of the next school year. They have been leasing space in the building for a few years. Once the school acquires the Club 47 building they will occupy all of the approximately 42,000 square feet of the facility.

“I think that gives credibility to parents from an academic standpoint,” she said.

“We are true to the mission of being a Christian school,” she said, adding that at the same time they are able to uphold a high academic standard.

Benson explained that Parkview tries to be inclusive so it is not a requirement that students be Christian or practice the faith.

“We want to give everybody a good education that wants to come here,” she said.

While they are excited about buying the Club 47 building, Benson said that the school still wants to grow within their means.

“We’re not trying to get to 2,000 students because we don’t believe this broader community will support that,” Benson said.

In addition to the purchase of Club 47, Parkview recently received 17 acres of land from an anonymous donor for athletic fields at Ament Road and Route 47, south of Yorkville.

“Having that building is very exciting but we still want soccer fields and baseball fields for the athletic program,” she said.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Yorkville baseball team completed its second week of the summer season with a 3-3 mark after splitting doubleheaders against West Aurora and Oswego.

The Foxes traveled to Oswego on June 15 and took Game 1 by a score of 6-1. Dru Kotlinski was the winning pitcher in five innings of work, allowing one earned run and three hits while walking none and striking out one. Lucas Farren hit a double and had one RBI and one run scored. Ty Liaromatis doubled and drove in two runs, Zach Haddox was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Mark Sommers was 1-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored.

In the second game, Oswego shutout Yorkville 2-0. Michael Nape, Ryan Reynolds and Zach Splayt all hit 1-for-2.

Yorkville split a pair of games against West Aurora on June 14, taking the opener 2-0. Brendon Reifsteck was the winning pitcher over five innings, allowing no runs, one hit and struck out three. Farren hit 1-for-2 with an RBI and one run scored and Kotlinski was 1-for-2 with one run scored.

West Aurora won the second game, 8-6. Nape was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and two runs scored, Jake Bivens hit 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Sebastian Sanchez was 1-for-1 with a walk and one run scored.

Following games against Morris and Marmion this week, Yorkville will host Oswego on Tuesday in a twinbill starting at 3:30 p.m. The Foxes also face Metea Valley on June 29 to close out the month before the holiday break.

Yorkville will resume action at Oswego’s Wood Bat Tournament on July 6.

Yorkville Fury will be having boys travel baseball and girls travel softball team tryouts for the 2017 season. Our baseball teams play in the Kane County Bronco League (KCBL), and our softball teams play in the Southwestern Suburban Softball League (SWS). Practices will begin in November / December at our partner indoor training facility SWING!.

Games will start in April and go through the beginning of July. We focus on player development with the ultimate goal of developing a deeper pool of talent for the high school athletic program. Yorkville’s Joey Nauman selected to play in charity scrimmage KRISTIN SHARP

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com With the decision to focus solely on his academics at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, Yorkville’s Joey Nauman had one final opportunity to put on his football pads last Saturday at the 42nd annual Illinois Shrine AllStar Game.

The 2016 Yorkville grad was one of four outside linebackers selected to the West roster, which included a total of 52 players. Eighty-eight of the state’s best football players participate in this all-star game to raise money for Shriners Hospital for Children, the official philanthropy of Shriners International.

The All-Star week began “It was busy, but it on June 14 with the initial was eye-opening practice under the direction being able to tour the of West head coach Tom Jobst of Ottawa Marquette hospital and see all before the players visited the Shriners Hospital in Chicago that they do.” the following day.

A banquet was held FriJoey Nauman day before the game took Yorkville graduate selected place Saturday at Tucci Stato play in the Illinois Shrine dium on the campus of IlliAll-Star Game nois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

“We also helped with the Miracle League baseball game, so that was really cool,” Nauman said. “It was busy, but it was eye-opening being able to tour the hospital and see all that they do. We were able to meet some of the kids and play wheelchair basketball. That was the first time for most of us, so we weren’t very good.

“I met one kid, Alex, who has been at the hospital since he was 2 months old. He was talking a lot of trash for sure and his team just won the national championship for wheelchair basketball. He was showing us a thing or two.

He’s 14, and just about to go into high school,” Nauman added.

West beat the East 34-12, as West’s defense held the East scoreless through the first three quarters. Byron’s Jacob Elsbury had 13 tackles and was named the West’s Defensive MVP. Nauman, a 6-foot, 185-pound linebacker, also stepped onto the field as a long snapper.

“Our main linebacker coach [Matt Lynch] was from Marengo and the practices were really hard,” Nauman said. “At first it was awkward because you don’t really know anyone’s name, so we just started calling each other by nicknames. It was a really cool experience. I got a good amount of playing time and it was a lot of fun.”

Nauman was one of two players selected from the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference, along with Rochelle cornerback James Porter.

Nauman, who was a standout football player and wrestler at Yorkville, has brought his athletic career to a close.
