Vanisko is a lifelong Joliet resident who graduated from Joliet Catholic Academy in 1982 and the University of St. Francis in 1986.

Rail agency to go ahead after push from local officials on line extension SHAW MEDIA Work will resume on engineering and environmental studies to extend Metra commuter rail service on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway’s mainline tracks from downtown Aurora into Kendall County, Metra officials announced in a statement.

The rail agency said they were prompted to continue studying the extension after local Kendall County officials said they strongly supported the planning work despite the challenges of securing funding to build and operate the extension.

After local elected officials secured $7.5 million in federal funding in the mid-2000s, Metra initiated prelimi-

nary engineering and environmental assessment studies on the proposed BNSF extension from Aurora into Montgomery, Oswego, Yorkville and possibly Plano and Sandwich.

The goal of the studies is to determine the costs and potential environmental impacts of the project so that local stakeholders in Kendall County can determine if and how they will secure the necessary capital and operating funding needed to move the project forward.

Metra suspended the studies in June 2015 to determine if there was consensus among local officials to spend the remaining $6.6 million in planning and design funds on the unfunded railroad extension rather than other infrastructure needs in the area.

To date, Metra has been unable to fund construction of the project because it is facing expenditures estimated at $11.7 billion to upgrade and improve its existing infrastructure.

An estimate indicates the BNSF extension into Kendall County could cost more than $200 million, according to Metra.

Local leaders recently indicated there was consensus to continue the engineering and environmental studies for the project that would require the creation of an additional dedicated funding stream provided by Kendall County entities to cover the remaining costs of the extension.

“I am impressed by the deliberate and thoughtful way the leaders of Kendall County came together to show

their support for the extension of the BNSF extension,” said Metra Chairman Martin J. Oberman. “They clearly understand the financial demands that will be facing them and I look forward to working with them in the future.”

“We are humbled that local officials are so convinced of the value of Metra service that they are willing to take on this challenge,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno. “We thank Senator [Mark] Kirk and Congressmen [Randy] Hultgren [R-Plano] and [Bill] Foster [D-Naperville] for their leadership and support of this project.”

Now that work is resuming, the two studies are expected to be completed in about 18-24 months.

news@kendallcountynow.com A proposed new grading plan for Yorkville School District drew concerns from some teachers and a parent at Monday’s Board of Education committee meeting.

The proposal would limit grades on homework and for classroom behavior and give students more ways and more time to show they have mastered a subject.

The 26 teachers and administrators on the district’s Curriculum Coordinating Council (CCC) have been researching and developing the plan over the past two years. If approved by the board, they plan to present it to teachers on an Institute Day on June 8 and have it go into effect when school begins again in August.

CCC member Melissa Condon said the idea was to have students focus on “learning vs. earning” grades. It would give them multiple opportunities to

demonstrate they have learned material.

Derek Miller, another CCC member, said the group researched other districts’ grading plans and what are believed to be best practices. He said they believe that academic performance and skills are separate from academic behaviors and that grades should reflect the mastery of content.

Condon said they believe homework should be meaningful and purposeful and- beyond reading outside the classroom- should take no more than 10 minutes per grade level. For example, no more than 50 minutes per day for a fifth grader. This would include work done outside the class time, either at school or at home.

Homework won’t be graded unless it is part of a larger classroom project.

Only quizzes used to measure student mastery will be graded. There would not be comprehensive final exams- only a final assessment that is of similar point value to other assessments during

the semester or year.

Alison Strandell said any grades related to behavior, participation or attendance would not be used as part of the achievement grade. If students complete the work assigned, she said, that will probably correlate with mastery of the material.

Assessments can be done to guide teacher planning, measure the growth of students who are receiving an intervention, or as checks to help guide instruction but which are not included as part of a student grade. Summative assessments, which are used to measure if a student has mastered the material, can be projects, portfolios, or labs, as well as tests.

Grades in core subjects (math, language arts, etc.) in kindergarten to third grade are now given as M meets expectations, N does not meet, NA not applicable, or I incomplete. In physical education, music and art, grades are reported as M meets, P progressing, N does not meet, or I incomplete.

That grading system would be extended through fifth grade in this proposal.

The CCC will look at middle school and high school grading systems next year to see if it’s feasible to expand this system, instead of the letter grades A through F as used now.

Grades would be communicated to parents as they are now with as much of the communication as possible through the e-school electronic format. Parents would be notified of missing or late work and teachers would keep the information updated weekly.

The committee recommends that extra credit not be offered.

In the new plan, students would be allowed to retake or rewrite the assessments or show competency in a different, but comparable way. Students and teachers will collaborate to make up learning activities and assessments missed due to absence. Students would have three weeks into the next marking

County board should heed treasurer’s request The Kendall County Board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, June 2, to discuss changing the manner in which board members are paid.

The board is also expected to discuss potential changes to their existing health insurance and mileage reimbursement benefits.

Currently, board members receive a small base salary and per diems totaling $85 for each county meeting they attend. Since the board has multiple committees which meet frequently, the per diem payments can add up quickly. In addition, board members can claim mileage reimbursements to drive to county meetings, both in and out of county. And though serving on the board is considered a part-time position, board members can enroll at taxpayer expense in the health insurance program the county offers to its full-time employees and participate in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).

A few years ago, a forensic audit of the board’s compensation revealed

that 11 board members mistakenly accepted about $47,000 in per diem and mileage expenses that they were not eligible to receive. Board members later ended up repaying a small portion of those funds to the county.

In May 2014, the board deadlocked in a 5-5 tie vote on a motion to replace the board’s current per diem compensation system with set salaries while prohibiting board members from claiming mileage reimbursements for attending in-county meetings.

Also under the failed proposal, board members would have been allowed to continue to participate in the county’s employee health and dental insurance programs, but at their own expense – not the taxpayers’.

The board has now agreed to revisit the compensation issue June 2 at the request of County Treasurer Jill Ferko.

Sadly – but not surprisingly – the same problem that resulted in county board members receiving more than $47,000 in taxpayer funds they should

have never received has not gone away, according to Ferko.

She told the board May 17 that her office has been struggling every month to make sure board members are signing sheets to verify their attendance at meetings. Ferko asked the board to consider doing away with the per diems and implementing set salaries for board members, beginning with the five that will be elected in November.

“Obviously, I would be in favor of a salary because that would relieve a lot of headaches in our office. It takes quite some time to go through [attendance sheets] and we have to double check everything,” she said.

We strongly support Ferko in her efforts to have the board change its compensation method. Change is clearly needed to protect taxpayers from further abuse of the per diem system.

By changing to set salaries – as proposed by some board members in 2014 – the board will relieve the treasurer’s office of the time, expense and

headache of attempting to track board member attendance at their meetings.

Currently, the county board is the only locally elected governmental agency to be paid through a combination of a salary and per diems. It’s true, changing to set salaries would mean all board members – even those who are lax in their meeting attendance – would receive the same pay.

But it’s also true the voters always retain the right to cast out those board members for non-performance the next time they’re up for election.

While they’re changing their compensation method, we continue to believe the board should act to save taxpayers even more money by voting to do away with health insurance benefits, in-county mileage reimbursements and IMRF participation. We know of no employers in the county that offer such benefits to their parttime employees and can’t fathom why taxpayers should have to provide them to part-time elected county board members.

And now we’re looking at the start of another summer season, which officially kicks off, not with the official start of summer (which officially, officially doesn’t start this year until June 20, but who’s counting?) but with Memorial Day next Monday.

Here in Oswego, we’ll all head down to watch the parade, and then follow along to the cemetery for the American Legion’s services honoring the nation’s war dead. It’s always a somber observance, but it’s also a triumphal one, too, because the freedom all those pilots, infantrymen, Marines, sailors, nurses and others who served is still preserved – no matter what you might hear on talk radio. We really do live in the greatest nation on earth.

And since we are a (if not the ) world-class nation, we also have a world-class postal system that, six days a week, manages to inject a huge

And so, with no further ado, except for a hat tip to the late Hal Boyle, here are a bunch of things I probably wouldn’t have thought about had I not opened all my junk mail each and

Speaking of ferns, they used to say in parts of England that biting off the first fern seen in spring would keep one free from toothache all year. Remember that when you see your neighbor out grazing on your fiddleheads and perhaps gently suggest he see a dentist instead.

In parts of India, people once married trees to each other, with great ceremonies and feasting. Those Indians!

They’ll do anything to have a party.

The planet Neptune is 17.3 times larger than the earth. That’s something you’ll be able to amaze the kid with the next time he comes to read your meter.

Among some primitive people, the king or chieftain was directly responsible for rain and sunshine. People blame President Obama for everything else, I suppose they may as well blame him if it rains. Or doesn’t.

FORUM To the Editor: As a parent of two high school age students in the Yorkville School District, when I was reading through the proposed grading plan, I could not help but ask myself these questions. Do we have a high rate of truancy here in Yorkville?

Are negative behaviors hugely increasing and affecting student success? Are our students failing at an alarming rate?

When my youngest daughter, a sophomore who is concerned about college admission, read this plan, her eyes widened and she asked, “Are you kidding me? No one will have any reason to behave!” She stated that classes will be a free-for-all when students are no longer held accountable for their homework or behavior. In addition, my eldest daughter, a senior who hates school and never took an honors class, was able to earn a respectable 26 on her ACT because she was held accountable for her homework, attendance, and behavior. She succeeded academically because our current grading system takes into consideration the whole student. Further, both girls questioned how PE will be graded. They will both most assuredly fail because it takes them too long to run the mile, they have difficulty with push-ups, and can no longer be graded on participation.

I feel strongly that the system in place at Yorkville is not currently broken so I think that we should hold off on this plan until it is. From my observations, we have exceptionally dedicated teachers who love their jobs, love students, and love their content areas. These teachers

Finally, do you remember when Memorial Day was called Decoration Day? It was so named because the graves of those killed in war, originally the Civil War, were decorated with flowers. The name was officially changed to Memorial Day in 1967 and also changed to a day to memorialize those who died for their country in all wars.

Pedestrians hurt in crash near Sugar Grove SHAW MEDIA SUGAR GROVE – Two pedestrians were injured in a traffic trash early May 22 at Route 47 and Jericho Road near Sugar Grove, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

David Anderson, 43, of Bristol, and Curtis Lippold, 26, of Aurora, had left a gas station and were attempting to cross Route 47 to get to the west side

of the road about 12:25 a.m. in Sugar Grove Township when they were struck by a car traveling south on Route 47, the release stated.

by helicopter to Advocate Good Samaritan as well, according to the release.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted

by Montgomery, Yorkville and Sugar Grove police, as well as the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and the Sugar Grove Fire Department. No charges were immediately filed. Route 47 was closed for about three hours following the crash, the release stated. The crash as of May 22 remained under investigation.

Teacher Shawn Collins, who is also president of the Yorkville Education Association representing district teachers, said he wasn’t necessarily opposed to the changes, but concerned about the amount of time teachers would have to adopt and implement them. He suggested that teachers receive training in the new methods next year and they be implemented in the 2017-18 school year.

Board member Dr. Robert Brenart noted that the effort to update the grading plan was initiated by the board.

He said the plan would be presented at each district school so questions can be answered. “Hopefully we can come up with a method that works well,” he said.

Board President Dave Dockstader noted the plan was a proposal to the board. “We may have disagreements among ourselves, too,” he said.

Police stake out Dunkin’ Donuts roofs to benefit Special Olympics SHAW MEDIA Police officers in Oswego, Montgomery, Yorkville and Plano joined with officers throughout the state on May 20 in staking out the rooftops of Dunkin’ Donut shops to heighten awareness and raise donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

In return for the officers doing time at their stores, Dunkin Donuts will donate $15,000 to the Torch Run fund.

Those who were unable to visit a Dunkin’ Donuts shop can still make a donation to the Torch Run fund.

The Newark softball team took some time to celebrate their Class 1A regional championship, but quickly turned their attention to the next challenge ahead.

The Norsemen (21-10) hoisted the Newark Regional plaque last Saturday after a 12-4 win over Crete Lutheran, which sent Newark into Tuesday’s Serena Sectional semifinal against 2015 state runner-up Somonauk. The Bobcats (28-2) reached the sectional after an 8-1 win over Serena in the regional final in Somonauk last Saturday.

Newark took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Somonauk answered with four runs in the third and two more in the fourth on the way to an 8-1 victory. Shelby Hoddy had a strong day on the mound for the Norsemen. Kelsea Zitt knocked out three hits including her 10th home run of the season while Emily Oldenburg, Nikki Kala and Becca Sweeney had the other Norsemen hits.

“They are the measuring stick for Class 1A softball in this area.

They’re an outstanding team and they’re well-coached,” Newark coach Mike Crackel said. “Their defense is outstanding, so their defense is tough to score on. They have great team speed, they have outstanding pitching and their defense is really something to see. They’re just a really solid team. Looking at them not as a coach but as an outsider, I think they’re every bit as good as last year – if not better.”

Against Crete Lutheran, Newark struck early with four runs in the first and took a 9-0 lead in the third. Newark led 9-1 through five innings, but Crete Lutheran avoided the mercy rule by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. The Norsemen answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to close the scoring out for the day.

Hoddy allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out nine to earn the win on the mound. Offensively, Megan DiClementi had two hits, Kala knocked out two hits and Oldenburg, Zitt, Sara Hipsman Eric Miller – emiller@shawmedia.com and Hoddy all had hits in the game.

Yorkville’s Sam Weisz paves way back to state meet

Senior wins sectional in shot put, qualifies in discus event

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Competing in arguably the most competitive Class 3A boys track and field sectional in the state, Yorkville senior Sam Weisz emerged as a twoevent state qualifier and sectional champion.

Weisz won the shot put with a mark of 55-11, and was second in the discus at 172-9 behind champion Tom Cwiok of Neuqua Valley’s throw of 173-10.

“It all started last year when he missed finals in both. They take nine to finals and he was 10th in both,” Yorkville coach Ben Draper said.

“He matured a ton, and he made the choice that was not going to happen again. He worked really, really hard in the offseason. He really went after his events. I’m happy that he’s had such a good, consistent season. For all the work he’s put in, he deserves it.”

and Oswego (42) rounded out the top three. Yorkville scored 30 points to take eighth and had several athletes earn a top-six All-Sectional finish.

“If felt like we never got a chance to see what the team was capable of because we either had guys out or it rained, but we finally were able to do that on Thursday, so that was really cool,” Draper said. “If this isn’t the toughest sectional in the state, it’s in the top two.”

The 4x100-meter relay team of Javell Moore, Gabe Arroyo, Jackson Torok and CJ Bell set a new school record with their fifth-place finish in 43.74 seconds.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Logan Sudduth, Brendan Zeinstra, Jake Eberhart and Torok clocked a time of 1:32.62 to take fifth.

Jake Weisz finished sixth in the discus at 144-8. Arroyo was fifth in the 400-meter dash with a finish in 50.34 Steven Buyansky for Shaw Media seconds.

Pitchers love when their teammates give them an early lead.

A couple of Cameron Van Boekel’s teammates set him up so he could do just that.

The Yorkville senior smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning to give the Foxes an early lead. Then, he took care of business on the mound, scattering seven hits while throwing a complete game. The Foxes beat East Aurora, 7-2, during Monday’s Class 4A Downers Grove South regional quarterfinal in Yorkville.

“It’s way easier to pitch with a lead of a few runs,” Van Boekel said. “That definitely helped get me going in that first inning and gave me some confidence.”

East Aurora just didn’t go away easily. The Tomcats scored in the second inning and added another run in the top of the fourth to make it a 4-2 game.

The fourth inning proved to be a crucial point in the game as the Tomcats were rallying, even loading the bases with two outs on Van Boekel’s lone base on balls of the afternoon.

“I knew I just had to keep making good pitches,” he said. “They were having good at bats so I have to give them credit, but I made some good pitches and got the ground ball I needed.”

A routine ground out to second base ended the inning and kept the score at 4-2. It also proved to be the final score threat that the Tomcats registered in the ballgame.

ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE Four state finalists, four All-State finishes for Yorkville

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville girls track and field team were well-represented in four events during last Saturday’s Class 3A state finals.

In the end, all four events secured All-State finishes to give the Foxes a perfect finish to the 2016 season.

Yorkville senior Summer Pierson highlighted the day with a pair of state medals that included a delayed celebration. Pierson opened Saturday by racing in the first section of the 3,200-meter run at 10 a.m., and won her heat with a time of 10:51.48. She then had to wait two hours to see if her time was good enough for a top-nine finish.

The seeded runners stepped to the starting line after 12 p.m., and eight

runners finished under 10:52 – giving Pierson the final spot on the All-State podium. The 10th runner clocked in at 10:52.49.

“Summer has already run a very fast time this year and we knew she had a shot at being that girl who makes AllState out of the slower heat,” Yorkville coach Ben Draper said. “She had a good plan going in. She was really disappointed after the two-mile because she new she had a PR in her, but the fact that she ended up with two medals probably made up for that.”

Pierson took some time to recover from her morning race and opted to remain in the 4x800-meter relay with freshman Emily Eberhart and senior teammates Becca Jasutis and Julia Schultz. The relay clocked in at 9:19.76 for an All-State sixth-place finish.

“Summer came back in the 4x8 and ran the anchor with a 2:17 split, so we were pretty pumped,” Draper said.

Yorkville senior Louisa Washburn also had a stellar finish to her high school track career, capturing third place in the pole vault by clearing 11-9 for a career best height.

“I could tell she was definitely going to make the most of the opportunity to reach finals, and she did,” Draper said.

“It’s a big credit to her because on that one day she took care of her business.

That’s how you do it at state.”

Sydney Anderson battled her way to a seventh-place finish in an ultra-competitive high jump event. Anderson was one of seven girls to clear 5-6, with the state champion and runner-up clearing 5-7 before the officials had to go through the rule book to determine

tiebreakers.

“What she jumped would have been third in each of the last two years. It was unreal,” Draper said. “Sydney had a really rough start and missed her two attempts on opening height. I could see the panic in her face, but she adjusted really well and muscled her third jump.

I thought she did a great job refocusing and I’m really impressed with what she did.”

Washburn also raced in Friday’s 300-meter low hurdle prelims and finished third in her heat with a time of 45.75 – the 10th best time of the day to narrowly miss advancing to finals.

Nicole Greyer raced in the 1,600 and crossed the finish line in 5:06.03, and the last qualifier into the finals was 5:04.94.

Schultz withdrew from the open 800-meter run to focus on the 4x800 relay.
