Former local officials send letters of support for Hastert

Randall, Martin and Vickery among those who wrote to U.S. District judge

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Local Kendall County officials were among those who wrote letters of support for former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert. The letters were made public late last week in advance of Hastert’s sentencing Wednesday in a federal hush-money case.

The 74-year-old Hastert entered a guilty plea to the charges last October.

Retired Kendall County Sheriff Richard Nancy Martin Randall, former Kendall County Board Chairman Anne Vickery and former longtime Kendall County Board member Nancy Martin were among a group of over 40 people who sent letters Richard of support for Hastert Randall to U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin. The letters are contained in court documents.

In his letter, Randall, who served as county sheriff from 1986 to 2015, praised Hastert Anne Vickery for his public service, while Martin and Vickery asked Judge Durkin for leniency in their letters.

Hastert could receive up to five years in prison but his attorneys are asking for probation.

Randall, whose letter is dated March 1, 2016, says he has known Hastert since 1968, when Randall had just finished serving with the U.S. Air Force.

Along with being a friend, and colleague I consider J. Dennis Hastert a fine example of a public servant.”

Vickery’s letter is dated April 22, 2016, about a week after court documents showed evidence that Hastert had sexually abused five students while he was a coach and teacher at Yorkville High School from 1965 to 1981.

In her letter, Vickery says she has known Hastert for over 25 years and calls him “a good man with a generous heart.” Vickery lists some of Hastert’s local accomplishments including securing funding for capital projects as well as restoring Kendall County’s historic courthouse. “[Hastert’s] heart was always here with the people who elected him. I have seen his kindness in daily life, his generosity in giving his time and lending his name to worthy and important causes,” Vickery wrote.

Vickery closes the letter by asking Durkin to consider a lesser sentence for Hastert that would keep him out of prison.

“In closing Your Honor I would ask you for leniency and let him stay home

as opposed to a sentence in a facility that would only further jeopardize his health. This stress has taken a terrible toll on him, his family and friends and we would like to keep him home.

He always needed our votes but now he needs our compassion, support and redemption and he needs yours more than ever today,” Vickery concluded in her letter.

In Martin’s letter, the former Kendall County Board member points out some of the things written to the Record in the wake of Hastert’s indictment that she was concerned about.

“I was very sad when the news came out about his problem with the FBI. I also was disturbed about the news articles that came out before he had entered his plea,” she writes. “There was one person that wrote a letter bad mouthing him in our local paper, The Kendall County Record. The letter bothered me, so I also wrote a letter to the paper.”

In closing, Martin also asked that Durkin not sentence Hastert to prison.

“Please consider the good things that Dennis J. Hastert has done in his life and let God consider if he is deserving of God’s Grace. This has all been very hard on Denny and on his family and putting him in jail for any amount of time will do nothing to benefit society,” Martin writes.

CORRECTION Ashley Costa should not have been included in the list of Yorkville School District 115 teachers honorably dismissed in an article published in last week’s Record. Costa’s name was inadvertently included on the list provided to the Record by the district. That list had been changed because of a later request by another teacher for a leave of absence, according to the school district.

Hastert sued over unpaid hush money

A man who alleges he was sexually abused by former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert decades ago and was later promised $3.5 million to stay quiet has filed a federal lawsuit saying he’s only been paid about half the money, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The person known as “Individual A” in court documents filed the lawsuit Monday in Yorkville, where Hastert allegedly abused several boys while he was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School, according to the AP report.

In the lawsuit, “Individual A” says he’s owed $1.8 million under the agreement. He says he’s suffered panic attacks that led to bouts of depression, hospitalization and unemployment, the AP quotes the man as saying in the lawsuit.

Also at the sentencing hearing, the AP reported, Jolene Burdge said Hastert abused her brother, Stephen Reinboldt, throughout his years at Yorkville High School, where Hastert was a history teacher and coach from 1965 to 1981.

Reinboldt died of AIDS in 1995.

His sister turned toward Hastert and said, “Don’t be a coward ... tell the truth.” The AP also quoted her as saying, “I hope I have been your worst nightmare.”

Hastert left teaching and coaching at YHS in 1981 following his election as a state representative representing the Kendall County area. He was elected to Congress in 1986. He was elected Speaker of the House in December 1998. He left Congress and retired from politics in 2007.

Dennis Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison Wednesday in a hush-money case that centered on accusations that he sexually abused at least four students when he was a Yorkville High School wrestling coach, according to a report from the Associated Press.

Judge Thomas M. Durkin also announced that the former U.S. Speaker of the House must undergo sex offender treatment, serve two years of supervised release after his time behind bars and pay a $250,000 fine to go to a crime victims’ fund, the AP reported.

Hastert, 74, arrived at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago early Wednesday and was photographed being wheeled into the courthouse entrance by his son Ethan.

In explaining his punishment, the judge called Hastert a “serial child molester” and described as “unconscionable” his attempt to accuse one of the victims of extortion, the AP reported.

Hastert becomes one of the highest-ranking politicians in American history to be sentenced to prison. He pleaded guilty last fall to violating banking laws as he sought to pay $3.5 million to someone referred to in court papers only as Individual A to keep the sex abuse secret, according to the AP. Council left with no option but to approve Caledonia SSA The Yorkville City Council conducted a required public hearing April 12 over the proposed creation of a backup Special Service Area (SSA) for the Caledonia subdivision located off Corneils Road, west of Route 47, on the city’s north side.

In a memo to the board, Bart Olson, city administrator, noted the proposed SSA would be dormant and activated by the city only in the event the Caledonia’s homeowners’ association “dissolves or fails to adequately maintain” the common areas in the subdivision. Olson noted the “establishment of a dormant or back up Special Service Area was anticipated as part of the original PUD (Planned Unit Development) agreement approved by (the council) in 2005.”

But the possibility that the council may now pass an ordinance establishing the backup SSA – as recommended by city staff – has come as a surprise to many of the subdivision’s homeowners. During the April 12 council meeting, several homeowners voiced strong objections to the SSA. Susan Carlson, one of the homeowners, told the council that she chose to purchase her home in the subdivision in 2008 in part because she believed that the subdivision would not be subject to an SSA. She noted that a sign still stands at the entrance to the subdivision that reads “NO SSA.” Until the city council votes to enact the SSA ordinance there is, in fact, “No SSA” in Caledonia – like the sign says. However, if the sign told the full story it would have read: “No SSA – but the establishment of a dormant or backup SSA anticipated as part of this project’s original PUD agreement. See article IV, section 9 of PUD agreement: Right of city to maintain and levy taxes (Special Service Area).”

The city council should approve the ordinance establishing the SSA – they really have no other option. If they were to vote “no” on the measure and Caledonia’s homeowners’ association were to one day fail to maintain the subdivision’s common areas, then all of city’s taxpayers would be on the hook for those maintenance costs.

We sympathize with the Caledonia homeowners who purchased homes under the mistaken impression the subdivision would be forever free of an SSA. We’ve always believed that when it comes to purchasing a home, buyers should maintain a healthy skepticism over “No SSA” and other such claims and spend the extra $500 or so to have their own attorneys read all of the fine print in PUD and purchase agreements.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Illinois State Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday at 11:24 p.m. in the area of Galena Road and East Beecher Road, Yorkville police reported.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, Jacob Laue, 24, from Addison, died

from injuries he received in the crash.

Police said when they arrived at the accident scene, they found a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo that appeared to have driven off the road near the southwest corner of the intersection and struck a tree.

State police were summoned to investigate, police said.

Illinois overpaid Kendall County agencies $626,000

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Local governments in Kendall County were collectively overpaid $626,000 from the Illinois Personal Property Replacement Tax due to a misallocation error, the state announced this week.

Of about 6,500 districts statewide affected by the misallocation, the overpayment amounted to less than $10,000 for 5,291 of them. But for 10 agencies the overpayment totaled $1 million or more, according to a news release from the state’s Department of Financial & Professional Regulation.

The overpayment occurred following a change to tax form IL-1000 and revisions to forms IL-1065 and IL-1120-ST, which caused calculation errors, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue. A recent tax system modernization initiative at the Department of Revenue designed to enhance accuracy and efficiency uncovered the misallocation errors, which started in 2014.

The error resulted in overpayment of an estimated $168 million statewide to taxing districts that receive Personal Property Replacement Tax, which is money collected by the state and paid to local governments. The money replaces funds lost by taxing entities when their ability to impose personal property tax-

es on corporations, partnerships and other business entities was abolished in the 1970 state constitution.

In Kendall County, the largest overpayments were directed to the following agencies: • School District 308 – $236,302 • Plano School District 88 – $124,498 • Kendall County – $70,774 • Yorkville School District 115 – $54,994 • Oswego Township Road and Bridge – $20,330 • Oswegoland Park District – $13,216 • Little Rock Township Road and Bridge – $11,547 • Newark Community High School District 18 – $10,837 • Little Rock Township – $8,693 • Newark Elementary School District 66 – $8,617 • City of Plano – $7,401 Ali Meant, assistant superintendent for business services and operations for School District 308, said paying back the $236,000 will have an impact on the district’s budget.

“But I guess we don’t have a choice at this point. I’d rather not give the money back,” he said. “They’ve already prorated our general state aid for the last four or five years and we’ve already not received $21 million based on the proration, so why not just credit that amount?”

Dean Romano, assistant superintendent of finance and operations for Yorkville School District 115, shares Ferko’s frustration.

“There are quite a few school districts that are in the million-plus range,” Romano said. “For us obviously $55,000 is something that is noticeable but it is a very small portion of our overall budget. I don’t know how they’re going to correct it.”

Meant said he hasn’t heard how the state plans to recoup the funds. He heard that Springfield may ask them to pay it back over a few years or could take it out of revenue they owe the district.

“If they’re trying to take that money away then obviously we’re going to have less revenue,” he said. “If they adjust this amount from next year’s revenues then next year we will have less than what we were expecting.”

County Treasurer Jill Ferko said she hasn’t heard much from the state.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Three hurt on Rt. 126 Three people were injured in a head-on crash on Route 126 and Hopkins Road near Yorkville at 3:37 p.m. April 24, the county sheriff’s office reported. Police identified the injured as Angela J. Thompson, 43, and DeWayne Thompson, 50, both of Todd Court, Manteno, and Derek C. Mancini, 36, of the 1700 block of Cumberland Drive, Plainfield.

Police described the injuries as non-life-threatening. DeWayne Thompson and Mancini were taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, while Angela Thompson was taken by helicopter to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, according to police.

Yorkville soccer improves to 9-3-1 after flurry of wins KENDALL COUNTY RECORD

Yorkville is now 9-3-1 overall (3-1-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference) after tying Kaneland 1-1 on April 19, the 7-0 victory over LaSalle-Peru last Thursday and finishing in second place behind DeKalb at its tournament on Saturday.

The Foxes resumed tournament play on Saturday with two wins. They added another with a 4-1 victory over Woodstock North, only to fall to the host-Barbs 2-1. The goal against Kaneland was scored by Peyton Willie late in the second half. Willie added another three against LaSalle-Peru. Goals against Woodstock North were from Rebecca Schuberth, Willie, Abby Wahl and Peyton Bammer. Willie also had the goal against DeKalb. She and Lupe Anguiano were named to the All-Tournament team.

Newark varsity: The Norsemen post-

ed their 10th win of the season after the 11-1 victory over Indian Creek in Little Ten Conference action on Mon-

day. They are now 10-7, 6-2. Megan Di Clementi led the way with four hits and Shelby Hoddy was the winning pitcher.

On Saturday, Newark split a doubleheader with Wheaton Academy. The Norsemen lost the first game (19-2 in five innings) but came back in Game 2 with a 19-3 victory. Alyssa Schofield hit a two-run home run in the first game while Emily Oldenburg and Becca Sweeney had four hits in the second game. In the 5-2 loss to Plano on April 20, Hoddy hit her second home run of the season.

Yorkville sophomore: The bats of the Foxes came alive after the win over West Aurora, 13-1, on April 20. The Foxes had 11 hits. Haylee Reyes went the distance to earn the win. Yorkville also defeated Kaneland 16-0 after 10 runs in the first inning. Reyes was the winning pitcher. The team won 10-2 over DeKalb behind a seven-run fourth inning. Yorkville sophomore: The Foxes (5-81, 4-2) wrapped up their series against Sycamore with a 3-1 rain shorten win last Thursday. Luke Williams had two hits, Jake Bivens posted two RBIs and Zach Haddox was the winning pitcher.

The Foxes then traveled to Plainfield Central and came away with their first non-conference win of the year, 9-6, on Saturday. Bivens led the way with four hits and Ryan Reynolds was the winning pitcher.

Yorkville freshmen: The Foxes defeated Plainfield Central, 3-2, after scoring all the runs in the first two innings on Saturday. On April 19, they beat Sycamore, 6-1. Yorkville fell to Metea Valley 12-6 on Monday.

Frank Yabsley has been the boys tennis coach at Yorkville for more than 20 years, and never before has a singles player remained undefeated this far into the season like Josh Tatum.

The junior is currently 12-0 at No. 2 singles, including a 3-0 showing at a quad hosted by Plainfield North on Saturday. There, the Foxes placed second overall with 12 points behind Lincoln-Way North.

In the past week, Tatum helped Yorkville beat Mendota (7-0 on April 20) after he defeated another undefeated player, 6-4, 6-0. At the quad, he won 8-1 against his opponent from Chicago Christian, 6-1, 6-1 against Plainfield North and 6-1, 6-1 versus Lincoln-Way North. “[Tatum is] very conscious of where he’s at,” Yabsley said. “He’s a competitor, and he’s taken the challenges. It’d be nice if he could at least stay undefeated in conference to get a No. 1 seed at the conference tournament.”

Tatum has accomplished all the above with a bad back. He has been struggling with issues related to sco-

liosis and slipped discs since he was seven, and he has learned to deal with it since then. He also plays varsity basketball, and he missed half of the season resting his back. He is just glad he is good to go for the tennis season.

“I am feeling pretty good,” Tatum said. “I played a lot over the summer, but then with basketball, my back went bad. The first time I really played [tennis] this year was the first day of practice. It started off not that great, and that’s why I was at No. 2 singles, but I’m really starting to pick things up and my back is doing decent. It’s good enough where it’s not stopping me.”

Eric Naumann (at No. 1 singles) also went 3-0 at the quad and the doubles teams of Alex Burks/Zach Miesuk and Ethan Piszczek/Clay Elleby both went 2-1. Naumann, Tatum, Rey Castro (at No. 3 singles), Burks/Miesuk, Piszczek/Elleby and the No. 3 doubles duo of Spencer Snider/Antonio Bolanos and No. 4 doubles team of Chase Aulis/Jake Stemmet all posted victories over Mendota.

The match on April 21 at Ottawa was postponed due to the weather. It is set to resume May 2.

Yorkville baseball coach clawed to get back into it, but we were just unable to stop the bleeding.” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “We just got off to a really bad start for whatever reason. Our starting pitcher just couldn’t throw enough strikes today after looking good in the bullpen before the game. When you don’t throw strikes the natural thing that follows is making errors in the field.”

Sycamore won the first two games of the series, winning on a walkoff home run on April 18 and on the strength of a 10-run seventh inning on April 19.

Notes: On Saturday, Yorkville defeated Plainfield Central, 5-4. Jon Jungr was the winning pitcher who also finished with two hits at the plate, as did Lucas Farren. Brendon Reifsteck also finished with two doubles and three RBIs. On Monday, the Foxes topped Metea Valley, 10-9. Van Boekel was the winning pitcher.

After an 0-2 start against Sycamore, the Yorkville baseball team got to work early in Thursday’s final game of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference series.

The Foxes scored six in the first inning against Sycamore starter Jacob Cavanaugh and carried that momentum to an 11-5 win over the Spartans.

Yorkville held at least a three-run lead for the entire game and the early lead boosted the team in multiple areas. Yorkville was led by first baseman Cameron Van Boekel, who went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. “It really allows your pitchers to settle in to throw strikes and force the other team to put the ball in play.”

Yorkville coach Scott Luken said.

“From that perspective it is important and it helps relax the players and it’s just a lot more fun to go out and play when you have a big lead.”

Sycamore (9-5, 4-2 NIB 12) responded with their bats and began to chip away at Yorkville (9-8, 2-4 NIB 12). The Spartans were able to score four more runs over the course of the game.

Yorkville searching for wins

The Yorkville softball team dropped its last five games, and lack of hitting appears to be the biggest problem for the Foxes.

The Foxes lost to LaSalle-Peru (4-1 on April 19), Kaneland (7-4 last Thursday), Sterling (6-1 on Saturday) and Oswego (7-0 on Monday) and are now 8-11 overall (2-3 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference) heading into games against Plainfield East, Morris and Geneseo.

“We definitely started off with hot bats this season, but in the last few games we have really struggled with hitting,” Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said. “It’s not that we have faced overdominant pitchers. Our hitters are just struggling to get that key hit that gets the game going.”

Against LaSalle-Peru, Megan Corneils got two of Yorkville’s five hits.

Against Kaneland, she had two of the Foxes’ six hits, including a home run. “[Kaneland] had some timely hits, and our bats did not come alive until later in the game,” Regnier said. “We just didn’t have enough time to continue in the rhythm before the game was over.”

Yorkville softball coach the second, once in the fifth and three in the sixth. The Foxes scored their lone run in the third inning. Sydney Woodworth posted two hits for Yorkville.

“We played a great defensive game against them through most of the game,” Regnier said. “We made a pitching change late in the game because their hitters seemed to be timing up our first pitcher a little bit. Sterling made quick adjustments and hit our second pitcher just as much. On the offensive side of the ball, we struggled to hit the ball the way we need to in order to win.”

Against Oswego, Yorkville had two hits and made four errors.

“Once again we did not hit the ball,” Regnier said. “Although hitting has been our problem in most games, in this game, our defense was not solid. We had multiple mental and physical mistakes that cost us runs and that just added to the Oswego lead.”

Dakotah Kinsella plans to major in neuroscience on a premed track and minor in music or English. A Yorkville High School senior, she is a candidate for the 2016 Student of the Year scholarship award. A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office.

Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice. The 2016 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview.

Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration. Previous Student of the Year scholarship winners were Lisa O’Brien in 1999, Randi Russ in 2000, Janice Bergeron in 2001, Joy Doverspike in 2002, Meghan Voiland in 2003, Ryan Turner in 2004, Alison Corwin in 2005, Nelson Holmberg in 2006, Kelly Schulz in 2007, Clayton Brengman in 2008, Megan Klossing in 2009, Claire Turner in 2010, Meredith Olson in 2011, Derek Piszczek in 2012, Joseph Runkle in 2013, Tatum Dalton in 2014 and Sarah Megazzini in 2015.

Activities, jobs and honors Dakotah is the daughter of Doug and April Kinsella.

She has been in the YHS Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Strings, and Madrigal Strings all four years. She was a violin section leader in Chamber Strings as a sophomore and concert master of the Honors Chamber Strings as a junior and senior.

She has been president of the orchestra officers and taken part in Musical Connections and the orchestra mentor program.

Dakotah was also in the a cappella Sugar Canes ensemble.

She played tennis all four years and softball as a freshman and sophomore. She also takes part in club tennis and travel softball.

In addition to being on Student Council as a senior, she is also in the Key Club. She has performed music at her church and done job shadowing at Atlas Physical Therapy, as well as baby sitting.

The Yorkville track and field team endured a whirlwind weekend of action, but matching the same intensity from the week prior proved to be challenging for the Foxes.

“The week after the Matt Wulf, you never know what you’re going to get,” Yorkville coach Ben Draper said. “The Matt Wulf tells us what kind of team we have. There’s a big, emotional high and usually there’s some sort of letdown the next week and we’re looking at that.

Tuesday was a down day and we had to focus and get back on track. To the team’s credit, they really did a good job with that.”

After a dual loss to Kaneland on April 19, the Foxes split dates with the boys team competing at the annual Peterson Prep Invite at Kaneland on Saturday morning while the girls entered the Palatine Relays – but neither team featured its elite distance runners. Twelve athletes received an invitation to the Distance Night in Palatine – a meet designed for elite distance runners to showcase their talents against some of the best in the state. The event also raised more than $1,800 for Special Olympics.

In Palatine, Yorkville put together a first-place distance medley relay behind the efforts of Becca Jasutis, Louisa Washburn, Julia Schultz and Emily Eberhart. The event featured legs of 1,200, 800, 400 and 1,600 meters, and the Foxes reached the finish line in 12:42.01.

Summer Pierson took seventh in the 3,200 with a time of 10:58, with teammates Maddie Dearborn (11:10), Alyssa Edwards (11:17) and Olivia Borowiak (11:31) also competing. Alexis Grandys was 11th in the 1,600 with a finish in 5:08.

Nicole Greyer (5:10) and Maggie Klemm (5:17) also raced.

In the boys division, Trevor Wills (4:28) and Cody Hornyak (4:31) raced in the 1,600, and Patrick Black (9:57) and Alexx Nauman (10:00) ran the 3,200.

At the Peterson Prep, Yorkville scored 42 points to take seventh in the 17team event. Sam Weisz swept the throws, winning the shot put with a mark of 5610 and topped the discus event at 164-7.

Peyton Frankenreider was fourth in the triple jump (41-10½) and fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.11). Javell Moore finished sixth in the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 23.90 seconds and took eighth in the 100 at 11.51 seconds.

The 4x400-meter relay clocked in a thirdplace finish in 3:31.96.

Pitching the key factor as Newark holds off Indian Creek rally

sports@kendallcountynow.com Newark starting pitcher Kevin Klock’s ability to consistently throw strikes throughout the game helped the Norseman retire all but four batters until the sixth inning and proved to be the deciding factor in a 6-4 win over Indian Creek on Monday.

Klock recorded three walks and one hit through five innings while striking out nine Timberwolves. Klock finished his outing allowing five hits with nine strikeouts after 6 1⁄3 innings.

“Kevin has been throwing great for us all year,” Newark coach JR Veliz said. “When we get some run support for him we’ll be in pretty good shape. He has been in good command all season long and he’s very good at throwing firstpitch strikes. It is important to get ahead in the count early and it’s something we work really hard on in the off-season and that’s been the key to our success so far.”

The Timberwolves bats came alive in the sixth inning to rally back to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the final inning. In the top of the seventh inning, Klock produced a clutch two-run hit that put Newark ahead and close out Indian Creek. Klock went 2 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs. Indian Creek (6-9, 5-3 Little Ten) managed to get two players on base and a run in the bottom of the first inning against Newark (9-8, 5-3 Little Ten), but were shut down offensively for the four innings that followed. In the second through fifth inning, the Timberwolves did not record a hit and only two batters reached base on walks.

“Their pitcher was just throwing strikes against us,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said. “We were trying to make good solid contact but sometimes we just get in a lull where we struggle to string three or four hits in a row and that’s what happened to us today.”

Notes: Prior to Indian Creek, Newark lost to Plano 9-7 on April 20, but defeated Westminster Christian 4-3 on Saturday. Against the Reapers, the Norsemen scored all seven runs in the fifth inning behind Cam Myre’s three RBIs. Against Westminster Christian, Conner Christian pitched seven innings and allowed no earned runs, four hits and no walks while striking out three. Klock posted a two-run single in the first.
