Yorkville school board approves personnel moves

news@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville School Board members tackled a number of personnel issues Monday, from approving the switch of just over 100 paraprofessionals from the Kendall County Special Education Cooperative to the district, to the honorable dismissal of some teachers.

That “reduction in force” followed a two-minute public hearing at which no members of the public spoke. Teachers who were honorably dismissed include some Title I teachers whose positions were funded by federal grants to aid low income students. If the grants are later received by the district, those teachers could be rehired.

Yorkville School District Human Resources Director Troy Courtney said the equivalent of three full-time teaching positions at the elementary level would be cut as the district reviewed staffing needs, especially at the kindergarten level. He also explained that one teacher would be released because the person they were replacing is returning from leave.

Teachers released effective at the end of the school year were: Jane Childress, Deborah Duffy, Justin Johanson, Rhonda McKeever, Deborah Pizzo, Jill Sneel, Julie Page, Chris Crunk, Andrea Borneman, Tara Kuechmicel, Ashley Costa and Megan Blomberg.

In addition, Melissa Boggs’ position was reduced from full to part-time.

This year there were 101 paraprofessionals employed by the Special Education Cooperative working in Yorkville schools. With the dissolution of the co-op on June 30, the people in those positions will become district employees. The district had been paying the cooperative to provide their services.

School Board President Dave Dockstader pointed out that “most of the same people will be in our schools.”

The board voted to allow up to 102 paraprofessionals next year and also approved a pay scale for these aides.

Pay will range from $10.50 per hour for a high school graduate with no experience to $16.25 to a college graduate with 11 years experience.

The paraprofessionals will work 177 days a year, 35 hours a week.

Resignations, hires

The board also accepted the resignations of four people who have been Special Education Cooperative employees and who were already approved for hire next year by the Yorkville district.

They are school psychologists Andrea Hausser, Cassandra Kennedy and Kristin Still; and Kurt Ponchak, a special education teacher; Jamie Kewenig, Yorkville High School Dean of Students, also resigned effective at the end of the school year.

They hired administrators for the Extended School Year summer school program for special education students. Kim Hanson will be the secondary special education administrator and Kelly Kramer was hired for the elementary school position.

Nancy Vivaldo was hired as a bilingual special education teacher at Autumn Creek Elementary School; Michael Tierney as a Yorkville High School campus monitor; and Teresa Wedeen as YHS lunchroom supervisor.

Traci Underwood, a speech language pathologist, was granted an unpaid leave of absence from Oct. 26 to Nov. 4.

In the area of co-curricular positions, the board accepted the resignations of Sarah Eastham as Yorkville Middle School seventh grade volleyball coach and Yorkville High School assistant track coach; Amanda Jarosz as YHS volleyball coach; Brittany Davi as YMS volleyball coach; Elizabeth Pankau as YMS Art Club sponsor; Matthew Williams as YHS assistant basketball coach; Anne Kuntz as YHS Student Ambassador sponsor; and Jennifer Jones as YHS JV winter cheer coach.

assistant volleyball coach; David Ososky as Grande Reserve Elementary School soccer coach; and Emily Kielb as Yorkville Intermediate School soccer coach.

Courtney also presented proposals for three new positions, as well as increased or new stipends for seven co-curricular positions and one job title change. These proposals will be on the board’s meeting agenda next week.

He recommended an additional campus monitor and secretary at Yorkville Middle School, as well as a full-time learning specialist at Yorkville Grade School for the remainder of this school year.

Board members asked whether one added campus monitor for 5.5 hours a day would be enough since the school no longer has a police liaison officer.

Courtney was directed to check the staffing levels for the position at other schools.

He proposed adding stipends for a Student Services Team Leader at Yorkville Middle School and for sponsors of the Middle School C.S.I. Club, YHS Educators Rising Club (formerly Future Educators Association), and YHS Spanish Club. Increases in the stipend paid for the YMS Student Council sponsor and YHS head musical director were proposed because of their additional responsibilities.

Courtney suggested adding two “B” team level coaching stipends for Yorkville Middle School boys’ and girls’ soccer to allow more students to participate in the popular sport.

Board member Jason Senffner said some coaches are splitting their stipend to get more help and he added that the number of coaches “impacts the quality of instruction.”

Dockstader said he felt there was a need to keep students involved in sports at a younger level.

Also suggested was changing the title of one technology staff position from computer technician to help desk manager.

SHAW MEDIA Yorkville police evacuated homes in and around the 1100 block of Homestead Drive in the Heartland subdivision Monday evening as the Kane County Bomb Squad safely removed and then disposed of a suspicious device.

Police said the device was discovered by a juvenile on the south side of the city near Whitekirk Lane and Callander Trail. The juvenile then brought the device home.

Police said they received a call of a possible explosive device on Home-

stead Drive at 6:16 p.m.

Police said they evacuated the surrounding homes and secured the area where the device was found.

Upon arrival, the bomb squad took control of the device and it was “subsequently disposed of properly,” according to police. Residents reported hearing an explosion between 9:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.

Yorkville School District officials emailed this statement Tuesday morning to Yorkville Middle School parents: “This morning, Yorkville School District officials were made aware of

an incident that occurred on Monday, April 18 after school. While members of the Yorkville Middle School Track Team were running through a neighborhood near the school, a student found an item that looked like a type of firework. Intrigued, the student picked up the item and carried it with him, but avoided coming onto school property. After practice, the student was picked up by a parent and took the object home. His parent contacted the Yorkville Police Department regarding the unidentified item yesterday evening. The police then notified the Ken-

dall County Bomb squad, and the item was taken to the area where Yorkville fireworks are detonated. It was later determined that the object in question was a firework.”

The statement concludes: “Since learning of the incident this morning, we have maintained ongoing communication with the Yorkville Police Department. Though there was never a threat to student safety at Yorkville Middle School, we are committed to keeping you informed and updated about incidents that impact our schools.”

The audience included Kendall County area GOP lawmakers State Sen. Sue Rezin and State Rep. John Anthony, both of Morris, and State Rep. Keith Wheeler of Oswego.

Rauner arrived by motorcycle, wearing a leather biker jacket decorated with pins.

“I’m sorry I’m not dressed for a country club,” he said.

Rauner explained he was riding with the Illinois Patriot Guard organization after naming a highway in Kane County for a member of the military who was killed in Afghanistan.

As the state budget impasse continues, Rauner blamed Democrats and the “Chicago Madigan political machine

for the state of Illinois.”

“People think we are fighting about the budget and we are, the budget is important, but what we’re really fighting about is the future of Illinois,” Rauner said. “The question is are we going to stay on the track that the Democrats have put us on for years – job losses, lower family income, higher taxes, higher costs of living, low economic growth?”

Rauner went on to say that “the system is broken” in Springfield.

He also touched on labor relations.

“We have the highest-paid state employees in America and I said, look, that’s OK but we need to be paid on productivity and not seniority,” Rauner said.

He added that his administration was creating a new nonprofit partnership and he will recruit executives from around the country that will work to bring companies to Illinois.

“We will have a not-for-profit, run by the business community and we are going to have superstars in it,” he said.

Noting that there are about 7,000 units of local government in the state, Rauner spoke of reducing that number.

He said the state could save billions of dollars doing away with many of these agencies.

“And most of these units of government have taxing authority, pensions, cronyism patronage, high salaries and it’s somebody’s turf – it’s somebody’s sandbox where they can run their political empire,” Rauner said. “We got to

shrink that down.”

He continued that he wanted “local control of government costs” and wanted local governments to be able to modify things as they see fit.

“The governments of Will County, Kane County, Kendall County – everywhere in the state – it’s your government, it’s your county, it’s your city, it’s your school district – you decide what gets collectively bargained and how much prevailing wage is.”

Tragedy for Hastert’s victims and their families Next Wednesday, April 27, former U.S. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is scheduled to be sentenced in a federal courtroom in Chicago for violating banking laws in an aborted attempt to buy the continued silence of a person prosecutors have called “Individual A” at a cost of $3.5 million.

Individual A is one of at least four members of the Yorkville High School wrestling team that prosecutors say were sexually abused by Hastert when he taught and coached at YHS from 1965 to 1981.

Prosecutors have said they would have preferred to have filed sexual abuse charges against the 74-year-old Hastert but the statute of limitations on those potential charges ran out years ago.

Hastert, a Plano area resident, had kept a low profile since retiring from Congress in 2007. He would occasionally be seen picking up the mail at the Yorkville post office or doing other errands, but made few public appearances. When federal prosecutors filed the banking charges against him last May, his many local friends and longtime supporters were left stunned and saddened.

The allegations that Hastert sexually abused at least four YHS student wrestlers during his years at the school – as detailed in the prosecutors’ court filings over the past several weeks – are outrageous and truly tragic for those who he victimized. Hastert’s own attorneys have said their client “acknowledges

that as a young man he committed transgressions for which he is profoundly sorry.”

Our sympathies are with Hastert’s victims and their families.

As a successful politician for nearly three decades, Hastert appeared to embody much of what was good about public service and government. He worked effectively and seemingly with a high degree of integrity in Springfield and Washington to build consensus among his fellow lawmakers to improve the lives of the people and the communities he served. Little did we realize that as Hastert went about his work in the General Assembly and then in Congress that he harbored some very dark and tragic secrets.

Santa Anna + Wrigley = A match made in heaven Back in 1995, the William Wrigley Jr. Company opened a chewing gum factory on property they had owned in Yorkville for several years. And I don’t know if you saw the news or not a couple years ago when the company announced they were expanding their Yorkville operation.

For years, Wrigley manufactured several chewing gum brands in Yorkville. But then in 2014, the company announced the exciting news that they were going to start making Skittles right here in Kendall County.

Exciting, that is, if you like Skittles, which I can take or leave, although mostly leave. Juicy Fruit and Double Mint gum are both OK, but I have never really been a fan of fruit-flavored candy.

But back to chewing gum, which has been popular – almost an obsession – in the U.S. since the late 1860s. And the story of that obsession here in the U.S. begins with one of the arch-villains of yesteryear, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the guy that rubbed out Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett at the Alamo back in 1836.

The former Mexican dictator and below-average, though over-achieving, general had been deposed for years before he decided to vacation on New York’s Staten Island in 1868. Being a haven for the world’s bad guys is sort of U.S. tradition. Ferdinand Marcos (the kleptomaniac who ran the Philippines), and the Shah of Iran both went there after their own people kicked them out. Even so, Santa Anna ambling around Staten Island still seems seriously odd to me.

Best of all from his perspective, it all worked. Per capita consumption of chewing gum increased from 39 sticks per person in 1914 to 130 by 1947.

In 1925, William turned management of his gum empire over to his son, P.K. Wrigley, who, with his son, continued his father’s promotional tactics to the great benefit of the company.

For instance, when World War II broke out, the Wrigley company had a huge stockpile of aluminum used to make gum wrappers. But P.K., with an appropriate public relations blitz, turned all of the strategically important metal over to the government, and in return Uncle Sam made sure Wrigley got a lucrative contract to package military rations. Of course, a pack of gum went with virtually every ration package, helping Wrigley reach a relatively captive audience.

All of which goes to show that everything – even chewing gum – has a history. And it also goes to show that people usually make history, and not the other way around.

If Charles Adams hadn’t spied Gen. Santa Anna pensively chewing chicle on that Staten Island beach back in 1868, the world would have had neither Wrigley Spearmint Gum, nor Adams’ Chiclets to chew on.

To the Editor: Now that the all ballots have been counted, and the primary election results are certified for Kendall County Board Dis­ trict 2, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to those citizens who voted for me, as well as those supporters who helped in numerous ways to help place me on the ballot in the general election for the county board.

I spoke with and received emails from many citizens expressing frustration with every facet of taxing bodies placing them in positions of setting time lines to exit the county due to Kendall County being No. 1 highest property taxes of the 102 counties in Illinois, and with elected officials continuing to raise all our taxes, it is becoming unaffordable to live here. I agree, and felt the need to do something about this problem.

Kendall County citizens’ wants and needs are one and the same: tax relief.

Being a retiree, I have the time to rep­ resent all citizens at board and commit­ tee meetings. Since this elected position is a part­time job – tax relief begins with me – I absolutely will not participate in the pension plan, medical plan or den­ tal plan, an immediate cost savings for taxpayers for a total of $10,000. Nor will I have taxpayers reimburse my mileage to attend meetings within the county. I am not aware of any employer who reimburs­ es employee mileage to/from their place of employment whether full or part­time employees.

Again – thank you so much and hope you again consider voting for me in the general election Nov. 8, and I look forward to hearing more about your concerns and cost­saving suggestions in order to be able to remain in the community we enjoy living in.

Mr. Hultgren is a co­chair for the STEM education caucus, whose job it is to en­ courage students to strive for jobs in these fields. In the past, people who worked as engineers, IT professionals, mathema­ ticians and scientists were held in high esteem and were paid well.

But let’s travel upstate to Lake Bluff and an Illinois company, Abbott Labs, that is firing 150 IT professionals and outsourcing these well­paid positions to India to take advantage of lower wages. To add insult to injury, these IT professionals are re­ quired to teach their Indian replacements to qualify for severance. Our senator, Dick Durbin, a Democrat, has said this is not acceptable and has called Abbott Labs out for this act.

What does this tell our young aspiring STEM students? Work hard, achieve your dream and when you become employed we will ship your job off overseas to save a few dollars. This is not only disheartening but it is encouraged by current tax laws.

We need to redefine what constitutes an American company and how we tax them.

Proposed SSA has residents concerned

news@kendallcountynow.com Many residents of Yorkville’s Caledonia subdivision expressed concern over a proposed Special Service Area (SSA) during a public hearing held as part of the April 12 city council meeting.

The Caledonia subdivision, developed by Wyndham Deerpoint LLC, is located on the city’s north side, west of Route 47 just south of Corneils Road and has 49 completed homes.

The property was purchased by Wyndham Deerpoint LLC from Inland Corneils LLC on July 12, 2005.

The original agreements indicate the Caledonia infrastructure costs (streets, landscaping and common area maintenance) have been covered by the developer Wyndham Deerpoint, with the intent that responsibility would one day be assumed by a subdivision homeowners’ association, yet to be established.

Part of the controversy stems from the fact that the development was marketed as having “NO SSA” which was appealing to buyers such as Susan Carlson.

“We bought property at the development in June of 2008 and one of the enticing factors was that there was not an existing SSA. In fact a sign still standing at the development still claims ‘NO SSA,’ ” Carlson said.

Another resident, Kate Elder, said that her family moved to Caledonia in 2009 and had done “due diligence” to ensure there was no SSA, which was a priority for them. She said the sign at the subdivision entrance and assurances they received at closing made them feel comfortable that the community indeed had no SSA. City Administrator Bart Olson emphasized the pro-

posed Caledonia SSA is a “dormant SSA” which exists on paper, in case a homeowners association fails to maintain common areas under their ownership.

This would protect other Yorkville residents from paying for services that are the responsibility of a subdivision homeowners association, according to Olson.

The SSA would provide a backup mechanism for payment of all future costs to maintain the common areas within the subdivision, such as open spaces, trails, signage landscaping and storm water detention basins, should a homeowners association fail to do so.

He said other Yorkville subdivisions with dormant SSAs include Prairie Meadows, Rivers Edge, Fox Highlands and Heartland Meadows.

Richard Guerard, an attorney who is a principle in the development of 50 residential and mixed-use projects in the western suburbs of Chicago, said Wyndham Deerpoint LLC has completed work on the Caledonia common areas and their plan is to launch the homeowners association this year and turn over maintenance responsibilities of the common areas to the people who live there.

Carlson said “my biggest concern about a dormant SSA is that the proposed ordinance is unclear about the maximum allowed. The ordinance cap is “alarmingly high” at $1.10 per $100 of assessed value.”

She said “if they are going to pass the HOA to us, we need to manage it ourselves to ensure the SSA does not need to go active.”

A 60-day objection process runs through June 11, 2016, and the June 14, 2016, City Council meeting will be the first possible vote on an ordinance creating the SSA.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Traffic stop leads to arrest Yorkville police arrested a Kevin Williams, 22, 5500 block of West Dakin Street, Chicago, and a juvenile after stopping their vehicle in the area of Route 47 and Route 34 April 17 at 9:24 p.m.

Police said Williams has been charged with posses­ sion of cannabis while the juvenile faces a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

A total of 90 grams of cannabis was found in the vehicle, according to police.

Hoverboard taken Yorkville police reported that a blue in color hover­ board valued at $400 was stolen from a minor April 18 at 8:34 p.m. in the 300 block of Timbalier Street.

Royal, 43, of the 300 block of Elm Street, was taken with injuries to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich after she was struck by a motorist on Frazier Road near Cook Road at 1:14 p.m. April 17, county sheriff’s deputies reported. Police said the offending motorist struck the rear of the Royal’s bicycle, causing her to fall onto the shoulder and land in a ditch. The vehicle drove away. The Yorkville High School travel program, YHS World Class, visited Spain during spring break. Led by Joe Fitzpat­ rick, 44 students and seven chaperones explored the beautiful cities, amazing food, and rich culture of Spain. From a semana santa procession in Marbella to a tour of Cathedral of Santa María in Seville, the group experienced much of what makes the country unique.

“We saw our students grow in con­ fidence and maturity and come back forever changed,” wrote YHS World Class co­sponsor Emily Benz.

The group continues to pursue worldly experiences for Yorkville High School students. This summer, YHS World Class

I got looks from Division II and Division III schools, but the Division I attention started when I did well at the Dvorak, and placing at state really helped because they knew I could perform well under big circumstances.”

Shewan expects to grow into the 184-pound weight class where he hopes to impact the Cougars’ lineup, under the direction of head coach Jeremy Spates.

“The guys were welcoming and I felt like a part of the team right away. It made me feel comfortable. I felt like it was a great atmosphere,” said Shewan, who plans to major in nursing.

Shewan was one of six Yorkville athletes who participated in National Signing Day on April 13. The Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville wrestling roster will boast a pair of Yorkville graduates on the 2016-17 roster with Bryce Shewan’s recent announcement to join the Cougars next year.

Shewan, a two-time state qualifier, ended his high school wrestling career with a 45 win-season, which ties a single-season school record at Yorkville.

He was named to the Class 3A All-State team with his fifth-place finish in the 182-pound weight class.

He joins Clayton Bass, a 2012 Yorkville graduate who recently completed his junior year with the team wrestling at 174 pounds.

Shewan also was a standout running back for the Foxes’ football team, but his decision to choose collegiate wrestling was not a difficult one. He was committed to the sport after he first stepped onto the mat as a seventh grader at Yorkville Middle School.

Yorkville squad steps up offense, improves to 7-2

Two goals in the first half were not enough for the Yorkville girls soccer team against Plano on Monday. The Foxes stepped up their offense in the second half with four more for the 6-0 victory against the Reapers in a non-conference contest at home.

The win was Yorkville’s fourth straight and improved the squad to 7-2 overall. The Reapers dropped to 2-7-1.

“It’s nice to come out with a win, but we didn’t play our game today,” Yorkville coach Lauren Anderson said.

“We took 36 shots in the first half, and we needed to finish them. We had plenty of opportunities but only had two goals.

There are some things we need to work on to get better, but we are winning the games we should be winning.”

“It was a very defensive game,” Plano coach Valerie Pelizza added. “The girls played really hard, but in the second half, the momentum changed after the third goal.”

Zach Carlsen hit a three-run homer run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sycamore baseball team a 5-3 win over Yorkville in a Northern Illinois Big 12 contest.

The Spartans were leading early but surrendered the lead in the top of the seventh before Carlsen’s blast secured the win. Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said that this sort of game is par for the course whenever his Spartans square off against the Foxes.

“It’s always something when we play Yorkville,” Cavanaugh said. “The game never ends the way that it’s supposed to end.”

The excitement started when Sycamore (8-4 overall, 3-1 conference) brought in Carlsen, a submarine-style right hander, with a 2-1 lead to close out the game for the starter Jack Mizgalski.

Yorkville loaded the bases off Carlsen, then Lucas Farren hit a chopper to Jacob Cavanaugh who misplayed it, allowing a run to score. Foxes third baseman Jon Jungr then fisted a ball right back to the mound, just out of Carlsen’s reach, that brought home the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cavana-

ugh and Jarod Montavon walked to put the tying and winning runs on base. On a 1-2 count, Carlsen turned on an inside fastball and pulled it over the 320-foot right field fence for a walkoff home run.

For the Foxes (7-8, 1-3) coach Scott Luken said that he liked the way his team grinded out at bats.

“I love when my team is opportunistic,” Luken said. “I just wish we would have been as opportunistic as we were in the seventh inning over the other six innings. We did work and stretch out [Mizgalski’s] pitch count and made them get into their bullpen.”

Yorkville pitcher Ty Liaromatis took the tough loss. Liaromatis got four strikeouts, pitched to contact well for the majority of the game and scattered the hits he gave up, allowing only three hits over seven innings. He gave up five runs, four of them earned. He walked three, two of them coming in the seventh.

“When I am on the mound, nothing is in my head,” Liaromatis said. “I just wanna be focused and thinking clear and keeping a good arm slot and release point.”

Even though the Yorkville boys tennis team is 4-4 overall in duals this season, junior Josh Tatum is still undefeated at 8-0 at No. 2 singles.

In the past week, Tatum won all four of his matches in two sets over Sterling (6-1, 6-3), Oswego East (6-1, 6-3), Morris (6-1, 6-0) and IMSA (6-0, 6-0).

“Very nice surprise,” Yorkville coach Frank Yabsley said of Tatum. Josh Tatum “He’s only been pushed once or twice in those [eight] matches.”

As a team in dual action, Yorkville defeated Oswego East (5-2) and Morris (4-1) but lost to Sterling (3-2) and IMSA (6-1).

The Foxes’ next two duals are against Mendota and Ottawa.

Aside from Tatum, Yorkville’s other win against Sterling was from the No. 1 doubles team of juniors Alex Burks/Zach Miesuk (6-3, 6-3).

“Burks and Miesuk are really starting to come on and have improved tre-

mendously,” Yabsley said. “They are starting to get it and see what it takes to win at No. 1 doubles.”

Yorkville’s wins against Oswego East included junior Rey Castro in his first win at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-1), junior Clay Elleby/junior Ethan Piszczek at No. 2 doubles (6-3, 5-7, 7-6), juniors Spencer Snider/Antonio Bolanos at No. 3 doubles (6-7, 6-4, 7-5) and juniors Chase Aulis/Jake Stemmet at No. 4 doubles (3-6, 7-6, 10-7).

Eric Naumann at No. 1 singles is the lone sophomore on Yorkville and has had to face the most challenging players from other teams. He is 2-6, and Yabsley called his 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 loss to IMSA the toughest match of that dual on Monday.

“Eric has been getting all the good players. He’s been right there. He’s been playing exceptional tennis and has made leaps and bounds since last year as a freshman,” Yabsley said.

“He hasn’t caught many breaks this year and has run into several state qualifiers ... but everyone is improving. The singles players are improving – we just need more doubles wins. That’s the key to getting overall match wins as a team.”

Rebekah Hahn Rebekah Hahn plans to major in education at Concordia University in Wisconsin. A Yorkville High School senior, she is a candidate for the 2016 Student of the Year scholarship award.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office. Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice. The 2016 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration. Activities, jobs and honors Rebekah is the daughter of Jeff and Pam Hahn.

She has been in the Teens Reaching Youth group for two years, and was the secretary one year. A three year member of Student Council, she served as a committee chair for one year.

Rebekah took part in Reality Illinois and was in the Key Club and Teens Activating the Language of Kindness (TALK).

She played basketball and softball all four years of high school and volleyball two years. She also played travel softball for six years. At Cross Lutheran Church, she is in the youth group, volunteers at Vacation Bible School and was the assistant fifth and sixth grade volleyball coach. She has worked at Home Plate Hot Dogs and as a babysitter.

In the first round of the seventh annual Fox Valley Softball Tournament, Yorkville was patient and productive at the plate early against Metea Valley.

The Foxes scored 13 runs, posted seven hits and drew nine walks in the first two innings of the game. Although Metea Valley attempted a solid comeback toward the end, Yorkville managed a 17-11 victory under the lights at the Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery on Friday night.

“We are excited, but we have to bounce back,” Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said. “Even though we won, we still should have played better. We’ll learn from it, get back up from the mistakes we made and play better next time.”

On Saturday, Yorkville lost to both Oswego (6-5) and West Aurora (7-2) in Day 2 of the tournament. The Foxes are now 8-7 overall entering this week of Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference games against LaSalle-Peru, Kaneland and Sterling.

eron Wicker and Dani Pozeg scored Yorkville’s two runs in the top of the first. The Foxes followed with 11 runs on five hits in the second, led by Megan Corneils’ first-ever grand slam.

“It was pretty fun,” Corneils said.

“It was a little confusing because everything just stood still for a second there.

No one was really moving right away.”

“There was maybe a little discrepancy whether or not it was fair or foul – I thought it was fair the whole time,” Regnier added. “We were waiting to make sure it was the right call. She handled it very well. It was a big hit and a big momentum swinger for us.”

Yorkville led 13-0 before Metea Valley scored a run in the bottom of the second and four more in the third. The Foxes led 14-5 after Sydney Woodworth’s RBI single in the top of the fourth. The Mustangs added two more runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth, Yorkville added another run before Metea Valley tallied four more times and reduced the lead to 15-11 going into the seventh. Hannah Bazan’s two-RBI double gave the Foxes the final two runs of the game.

CONDITIONS FOR VICTORY Yorkville girls take first place at Matt Wulf Invite; boys grab second

ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Weather has not traditionally been cooperative for the annual Matt Wulf Invite at Campbell Field, so teams took full advantage of Friday’s near perfect conditions.

The Yorkville girls track and field team captured a first-place finish while the boys had a strong fight to the finish before taking second to Oswego East.

“We knew after our meets were canceled the week before and the weather forecast this week was so nice, we knew we had to take advantage,” Yorkville coach Ben Draper said. “I think we really took advantage of last week and the weather we had. The most satisfying part of the night for me was to celebrate our team depth.”

The Yorkville girls scored 194 points to lead the eight-team event ahead of Aurora Central Catholic (110) and Dixon (71) as the Foxes won six events and three relays.

“We just really spread out our talent really effectively and it worked out really well,” Draper said.

Yorkville secured points in both distance events, with Alexis Grandys winning the 1,600-meter run in 5:08.6 followed immediately by teammate Nicole Greyer in 5:08.8. Maddie Dearborn won the 3,200 with a time of 11:19 and Alyssa Edwards clocked in a runner-up

finish in 11:33.

Louisa Washburn won the 300 hurdles ahead of teammate Becca Jasutis, and Mischara Palmer won the 200-meter dash as well as the long jump, hitting a mark of 15-3½ while Yorkville continued to show its depth with a runner-up finish by Gianna Davis (15-1) in the event. Sydney Anderson cleared 5-4 to win the high jump.

Yorkville also enjoyed success in all four relay events, with the 4x100 crossing the finish line one-tenth of a second ahead of Prairie Ridge with a time of 52.57 seconds. The 4x200 posted a winning time of 1:51, and the 4x800 finished first in 10:03, winning by a full 37 seconds over ACC. Yorkville and Oswego East were in contention for the boys’ championship until the Wolves pulled away in the final events, outscoring the Foxes 173140. Rockford Christian was a distant third with 97 points.

“We put together a roster that we feel is going to put us in position to win,” Draper said. “I know it sounds odd, but we don’t always do that.

There’s things we need to work on at other meets, but this is one that we really want to put our best foot forward and get this. To have the sprint relays both win was huge.”

She won the event with a mark of 15-3 ½. events. The 4x100-meter relay turned in a time of 44.28, the 4x200 finished in 1:32 and the 4x400 clocked in at 3:29.

The 4x800-meter relay was edged out at the finish line by one-tenth of a second to Oswego East, as the Foxes finished in 8:17.1.

Peyton Frankenreider had a firstplace finish in the triple jump (41-5), a second-place effort in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54) and a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (41.72). Sam Weisz also had a big night, sweeping the throwing events with a pair of marks that are already well past the

state-qualifying standards for the Class 3A state meet. Weisz won the discus with a throw of 161-4, and took the shot put event with a toss of 56-2¾.

Yorkville now prepares for a busy Saturday that will take the teams to three different meets. The boys will enter Kaneland’s annual Peterson Prep Invite while the girls travel to the Palatine Invite. Several Yorkville athletes were also invited to participate in Palatine’s Distance Night, which will feature an elite field in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter events in addition to a distance medley relay.
