Prosecutor: Hastert victim to testify SHAW MEDIA Federal prosecutors expect one person who has accused Dennis Hastert of sexual abuse to speak at his sentencing in his hush-money case, and the judge has indicated that he wants to consider that the former U.S. Speaker of the House lied to federal authorities, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Prosecutor Steven Block told Judge Thomas M. Durkin in court Wednesday that he ex- Dennis pects someone identiHastert fied in court papers as “Individual D” to make a statement at the sentencing April 27 in Chicago, according to one AP report.

Durkin also asked questions about Hastert lying to the FBI about an “Individual A” extorting him.

“That’s not conduct that’s 40 years old,” Durkin said, saying he expected to take it into account in sentencing.

Hastert plead guilty in October to breaking banking law in a scheme to pay $3.5 million to ensure “Individual A” stayed silent about being abused when he was a 14-year-old student at the Illinois high school where Hastert was the wrestling coach. He first with-

drew $50,000 at a time and then later switched to just under $10,000 to evade reporting requirements.

Prosecutors say Hastert sexually abused at least four members of the wrestling team when he taught and coached at Yorkville High from 1965 until 1981. They cite Individual A as saying the abuse occurred in a motel room when he was 14 and on the way home from wrestling camp. Hastert allegedly touched others in a locker room after saying he would give them massages. Two wrestlers said Hastert performed sex acts on them. Prosecutors also described a recliner where Hastert often sat in the locker room with a direct view of the stalls where the boys showered.

The prosecutors have said they would have preferred sex-abuse charges, but the statute of limitation on sexual abuse ran out decades ago, according to the AP. Still, prosecutors considered Hastert’s conduct with the victims, all boys 14 to 17 years old, so egregious that they chose to pursue the banking charge to ensure he faced some punishment.

Defense lawyers have asked for the judge to spare Hastert prison time and give him probation instead, citing his health and the steep price they say he’s already paid in public shame.

The statutory maximum for the banking violation is five years in prison, but sentencing guidelines suggest no more than a matter of months. Federal judges have enormous leeway, so Durkin will not be bound by the guidelines.

A presentencing filing late Friday revealed more details about the decades-old abuse allegations leveled Hastert, the AP reported last week..

An emailed statement from Hastert’s lawyer, Thomas Green, on Saturday – as in earlier defense filings – refers only in general terms to past misconduct by Hastert.

“Mr. Hastert acknowledges that as a young man he committed transgressions for which he is profoundly sorry,” Green wrote.

A graduate of Oswego High School, Hastert left his teaching and coaching career at Yorkville High School for the state legislature in early 1981. He entered Congress in 1987 and became speaker in 1999, holding the spot until his retirement in 2007. He now lives near Plano.

In the court filing, prosecutors say Hastert “was so sure his secrets were safe that he apparently had no fears about entering a profession where one is subject to constant scrutiny and media attention,” the AP reported.

BRIEFS Three men charged in burglary at Yorkville home last August

Three men are in custody on suspicion of burglarizing a home in the 40th block of Maple Ridge Lane in Yorkville last August, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office reported April 7.

Police identified the suspects as David Acevedo, 23, of Plano, Kalem Morton, 18, from Naperville, and Kendall Parker, 19, from Plainfield.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged the trio with residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, police said.

Acevedo and Parker were previously in custody at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville on unrelated charges, and Morton was taken into custody without incident at Western Illinois University in Macomb on March 30. He is also being held at the county jail pending court proceedings.

Bond for Acevedo and Morton has been set at $100,000, while Parker’s bond is $50,000.

Police said they began their investigation after receiving an initial report of jewelry, electronics and firearms being stolen Aug. 5 from a home on Maple Ridge Lane.

Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Deborah Lynn Krupinski, 56, of the 2100 block of Brookshire Court, Plainfield, and Terry Eugene Dreblow, 44, of the 4000 block of Moon Beam Drive, Crossville, Tennessee, at 4:45 p.m. April 9 on Caton Farm Road near Peterson Road in NuAuSay Township on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Police said Dreblow was also charged with illegal transportation of alcohol and driving with an obstructed windshield.

Police said deputies were initially dispatched to the area of Wheeler Road and Hopkins Road, also in NuAuSay Township, on a report of shots being fired from a vehicle.

Police said a Glock 9mm pistol was recovered from the car and open alcohol containers were also located within the vehicle. Neither suspect possesses a valid FOID (firearm owner’s identification) card, according to police.

Reminder on school bus stop law

The Yorkville Police Department issued a reminder to all motorists that on Illinois roads with four lanes or more, with traffic in both directions, vehicles traveling in the opposite direction of a stopped school bus need not stop.

Police said motorists may proceed after stopping for a bus if one of the following occurs: the bus resumes motion, the bus driver signals the motorist to proceed, or the flashing lights are turned off and the stop arm signal is no longer extended.

Police said there has been an increase in complaints about vehicles stopping when they do not need to, especially in the area of Bridge St. (Route 47) near Walnut St. If you have any questions or concerns you may contact the Yorkville Police Department at 630-553-4340.

Congressman Randy Hultgren gets a taste of work, coffee at local Starbucks

news@kendallcountynow.com It wasn’t the first time U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren stopped for some Sumatra at Starbucks’ Yorkville location on Bridge Street, but this time, the morning pit stop was for an entirely different reason.

On Friday, Hultgren donned a signature green apron of his own – specially embroidered with his name – and stepped behind the bar to make a few drinks with baristas during the store-sponsored event.

“Behind the Bar” is a program that gets politicians into their local Starbucks to meet with baristas, managers and district managers to talk about the business and issues that affect them and their regions. A handful of company employees – some who drove more than 60 miles to make it to the event – happily spent an hour sharing their stories with the congressman.

But, the morning wasn’t all about business. A coffee tasting made the event a bit sweeter for the Plano-based Republican, who said he loves a good brew.

He slurped, smelled and sipped on a reserve-blend as he met the green-apron-clad crew.

From a district manager who worked her way up with the company over 18 years, to an Air Force veteran who is supporting his family by managing his own Starbucks store, there was no shortage of diversity among the employees in the room.

“What are the biggest challenges you all face?”

Hultgren asked. “What are you excited about?”

There was talk of Route 47 construction – completed last year – which negatively impacted business at the Yorkville coffee shop.

“Some days it was just crickets in here,” one manager said.

But, the Yorkville crew was happy to talk about some of the ways they’re bouncing back and refocusing after the construction.

The Yorkville shop is one of a handful of local Starbucks now offering wine during the evenings and an expanded food menu including truffle mac and cheese and bacon-wrapped dates. Hultgren said he was pleased to hear about the new local options.

He said he was also happy to hear about the company’s tuition reimbursement program, which has been formed in partnership with Arizona State University.

The employee said he left a successful career after coming to a crossroads, and decided to head back to school – with Starbucks’ help.

Because he was already raising a family, the employee said the tuition reimbursement aspect of the Starbucks mission makes him happy to come to work in the morning.

“On days that are difficult, I think about some added benefits that Starbucks provides that other [jobs] don’t,” he told Hultgren.

With four children of his own, Hultgren said he knows the struggle of paying for an education.

“How many people go to school just to go to school?” Hultgren said, talking about the number of students who don’t know what they want their futures to look like when they first enroll.

“To be working and going to school is hard, but there’s a greater focus. You’re not doing it to simply check a box. You’re doing it because you see where you’ll be when you finish,” he said.

Besides education, Hultgren also focused on military benefits provided to Starbucks employees who have served their country.

One employee spoke about the benefits Starbucks has afforded him and his other military counterparts in the form of transfers to different states, bases, etc.

“I’m very proud to say I’m here and serving my customers and taking care of business,” the former airman said. “The company has done well helping me.”

Hultgren extended his support to the military man and the rest of the Starbucks staff.

“If we can be helpful to you, to veterans, to anyone, just let us know,” Hultgren said. “We’re excited to see what you’re doing here [at Yorkville Starbucks]. I’m personally supportive, but more than that, I just want to celebrate good things that are happening. Good things that you’re doing. It seems like the media want to pick out negative stuff to push out and focus on. But, I think there’s many positive things happening.”

A step toward doing away with insurance perk?

They may or may not be aware of it, but voters in the March 15 Republican Party primary may have taken a step towards eliminating the health insurance benefits that are now available to members of the Kendall County Board.

Though service on the county board is considered a part-time job, the 10 board members remain eligible – if they so desire – to receive the same taxpayer-funded health insurance benefits that the county’s full-time employees receive.

We have long opposed the board’s health insurance perk on the grounds that it is costly and should be offered only to the county’s full-time employees.

With the exception of the Yorkville City Council, we are not aware of any other elected, governing boards in the

county whose part-time members are eligible to receive taxpayer funded health insurance for their part-time service. (Fortunately for Yorkville taxpayers, the city council voted do to away with its health insurance benefits for newly elected council members beginning in 2013. Unfortunately, some aldermen elected prior to 2013 continue to claim benefits at taxpayer expense).

While efforts to do away with the county board’s health insurance have stalled, taxpayers might find some relief at the ballot box in November.

In last month’s Republican Party primary election, GOP voters nominated three newcomers to run as candidates from the board’s District 2: Diane Selmer, Tony Giles and Matthew Kellogg.

Based on their responses to a Record Newspaper questionnaire, the county’s GOP voters went for the candidates who indicated, for now at least, they do not plan to participate in the county’s health insurance program.

In a Record Newspaper questionnaire, Selmer emphatically stated she would not accept it if elected, while Giles wrote “as of right now” he has no plans to take the insurance. Kellogg wrote that he intends to keep his current insurance but added, “If changes in my coverage occur and I can’t get the best doctors for my family I will have to look at the options.”

Meanwhile in the board’s District 1 GOP race, another newcomer candidate, Jerry Bannister, has pledged not to accept the county’s health insurance.

We look for the question of whether or not the county should continue to offer health insurance to its board members to be an issue in the November general election as the GOP candidates square off against two Democrats in the Board’s District 2 – Elizabeth Flowers, an incumbent, and Kristine Heiman – and one Democrat in District 1, Audra Hendrix.

We’re hopeful that the five board members who are elected will decline the county’s health insurance and thereby save taxpayers thousands of dollars during their terms. Better still would be for voters to elect new board members who will vote to do away with the health insurance benefits.

We’re certain that would be a pro-taxpayer gesture that all county residents would welcome.

Illinois’ Union loyalty was not inevitable Most folks probably take it for granted that Illinois was staunchly pro-Union during the Civil War. After all, Abraham Lincoln was from Illinois, and the state provided 259,000 soldiers for the Union Army, a total surpassed only by New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

And if you look locally at how Fox Valley communities contributed in the conflict, you could be excused if you accepted that Illinois was an eager participant.

After all, nearly 1,300 men and boys from Kendall County fought on the Union side against the Southern insurrectionists during the war – when the county’s entire 1860 population stood at just over 13,000. That means that nearly 10 percent of the county’s entire population of men, women and children served in the war.

More Kendall County volunteers served with the 36th Illinois and the 127th Illinois Infantry than any other regiments. The 36th had so many Kendall and Kane soldiers in its ranks it was nicknamed “The Fox River Regiment.” Companies D (Lisbon), E (Bristol), and I (Oswego) were recruited in Kendall County, and Company F from Kendall and Kane counties – mostly from Newark and Aurora.

The 127th, too, had a healthy leavening of Kendall County men, with Company A recruited in Oswego, then the Kendall County Seat, and Companies F and K recruited in Little Rock and Bristol townships.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Besides the infantry, Kendall County men served in cavalry and artillery units, as well as in the U.S. Navy and Marines. Some of Union swabbies from Kendall County served in the “Brown Water Navy” that crewed timber and iron-clad riverboats on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers where they helped with the capture of Vicksburg.

However, loyalty to the nation was far from universal throughout Illinois. A number of counties, mostly in the central and southern portions of the state, were heavily populated by disloyal, subversive factions, called Copperheads by Union loyalists. They were the Civil War’s “Fifth Column.”

One group of southern Illinoisans even served in the rebel army.

Traitorous elements in the Copperhead counties fomented considerable trouble, including an 1864 draft riot at Charleston, during which nine people were killed, many of them Union soldiers. In fact, it got so bad that thousands of Union soldiers were diverted from front line units to guard against uprisings by disloyal elements throughout Illinois.

In August 1864, young Alfred Browne of Newark joined several of his neighbors from Fox, Big Grove and

Little Rock townships and enlisted in the 146th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, one of the 90-day regiments formed to free up combat troops from doing guard duty in Illinois’ Copperhead regions.

After arriving at his post in Quincy, Browne wrote a letter to Henry C. Cutter in Oswego reporting on his new military career. In the letter, Browne told Cutter that the 146th had been sent to Quincy to put down Copperhead activities and generally assure the loyalty of the surrounding countryside.

Illinois wasn’t the only Midwestern state where treason caused problems for the war effort, either. Wisconsin had its share of riots, including one at Port Washington, where Luxembourg immigrants rioted when they feared they might be drafted.

In fact, many of the nation’s newest immigrants were among the strongest opponents of the war. The dreadful July 1863 riots in New York City that resulted in 119 deaths were mostly caused by Irish discontent over the draft. Although the draft may have started the riot, it quickly turned into a race riot in which many free blacks in the city were murdered.

The internal problems the war caused in Illinois, even with the state’s favorite son, Lincoln, elected to the presidency, arose because Illinois was a state with a split personality when it came to slavery. Although the Northwest Ordinance under which Illinois

Illinois went for its favorite son, Abraham Lincoln, in the election of 1860, and followed that up by vigorous-

ly supporting the Union cause after the southern states began the Civil War by bombarding Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. Certainly Illinois took the national lead by not only producing the wartime president as well as the general – U.S. Grant – who won the war for the North.

But during the war itself, while 620,000 men were being slaughtered on battlefields from Arkansas to Virginia to Pennsylvania, a fair number of Union troops, as I noted above, proved to be needed to keep order right here in Illinois lest insurrection break out.

But let’s say the governor says a few parsed words about how messed up the state is and the rating agency gets skittish and raises the rates the city or state must pay on these bonds. Considering there are several billion dollars worth of bonds currently being raised because the state and local entities are broke, the market is hopping.

Today if you don’t trust the stock market then where do you put your money? Banks and treasury bills pay almost nothing. But bonds can pay out, and when secured by municipalities or schools, can be very safe.

But they may not pay very well because of the safety that they won’t default.

Since Rauner and his friends, like billionaires Sam Zell and fellow hedge fund guy Ken Griffin, are the kind of people who appreciate the safety of earning seven or eight percent guaranteed, why not make the bonds a bit riskier and force the interest up a little more. Illinois citizens with retirement funds would love to see those returns.

Every one percent increase in interest on a bond to pay pensions or fix roads would add millions to the monied people buying the bonds. The downside is it’s only going to affect the citizens paying more property taxes or sales taxes. Why else would Rauner refuse to budge on such inconsequential items such as workman’s comp or injury payouts.

But maybe it’s not about the money but in fact it’s about protecting the students, the elderly, the disabled, the homeless and anyone who is impacted by a stalled budget.

Maybe the governor is really a kind-hearted guy who wants to do good by the citizens.

Or maybe he just likes watching the bond market.

Expecting a ‘pass’

To the Editor: It is a sad commentary on our democracy when individuals as Hastert put themselves above the law and are immune from the full force of our laws. In this case, Mr. Hastert will for all practical purposes be given a “pass” but the reality is he destroyed several lives that take a lifetime to heal if ever. And for acquaintances in Yorkville to lament the fact that “no tax money was involved” and “who did Hastert really damage?” speaks to the issue of our democracy when career politicians can subvert the laws for their own gain and in this instance Hastert was a heartbeat away from the presidency. That is scary and we should all keep our politicians accountable just as we as citizens are accountable each and everyday. Very sad commentary on Hastert’s life. mschury@kendallcountynow.com At least one Kendall County Board member says she objects to the completion of engineering studies for the proposed extension of Metra commuter rail service into the county from downtown Aurora.

Judy Gilmour went on the record as saying she believes the federally earmarked money would be better spent elsewhere.

Last month U.S. Rep. Judy Gilmour Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, held a task force meeting to discuss what to do with the remaining $6.6 million in federal funds that have been earmarked for the studies.

“I’m not in favor of this study,” she said.

Reading from prepared remarks Gilmour told the board that spending $6 million to continue the engineering studies “is not a good use of taxpayer money.” Gilmour added that the county simply cannot afford a Metra service and should move on with other projects.

Metra Board Chairman Martin Oberman said at Hultgren’s meeting that the money might be better used for something else.

“Metra’s own spokesman told us it would cost $200 million to extend Metra to Yorkville and even more to go all the way to Sandwich,” she said. “This means one thing – that the taxpayers of Kendall County would be the ones to pay the bill.”

Gilmour read her remarks shortly before Kendall County Board Chairman John Shaw announced that a letter was sent to Hultgren stating the county and area municipalities strong support the for completion of initial environmental and engineering studies.

The letter of support is signed by Shaw, Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski, Plano Mayor Robert Hausler, Sandwich Mayor Rick Olson, Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley and Oswego Village President Gail Johnson.

Gilmour added that she hears from residents in the county that taxes are already too high.

Alexa Weiss Alexa Weiss plans to major in biology in college.

A Yorkville High School senior, she is a candidate for the 2016 Student of the Year scholarship award. Push for the Path is a 501(c)(3) notfor-profit organization created to raise funds to build a 2.72-mile multi-use asphalt path parallel to Kennedy Road from Route 47 to the existing trail south of Mill Road in Yorkville.

It was recently announced that the official groundbreaking for the 10-footwide path will be Saturday, May 7, following a 5K run/walk fundraiser.

This project costs about $1.7 million.

Yorkville received a $1.3 million grant to fund this project – 80 percent of the total cost. The remaining 20 percent, which is $357,000, must be privately raised. Currently just over $200,000 had been raised.

The 5K run/walk to contribute to the remainder of the cost to construct this path is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, May 7, beginning and ending at Yorkville’s Rosati’s Pizza and Pub at 1985 Marketview Drive, the sponsor and host for this event. Entry fees are $30 per person or $100 per family (up to four per household) for preregistration, or $35 and $100 the day

of the race. The entry fee includes a goody bag, a T-shirt with the sponsors’ names (while supplies last), and a slice of pizza.

Arrest after Rt. 30 crash County sheriff’s deputies arrested Joel Lee Castillo, 23, of the 1700 block of Ivy Lane, Montgomery, after the vehicle he was driving on Route 30 at Dickson Road at 4:09 a.m.

April 9 drove through a stop sign, struck a directional sign and then landed in a ditch.

Police said Castillo was located nearby and taken to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Castillo has been charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident, disobeying a stop sign and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Investigate battery County sheriff’s police are investigating a battery that occurred on a school bus on Long Beach Road at Winrock Road in Boulder Hill April 9.

Domestic disturbance County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 1500 block of Light Road in Oswego April 9 at 11:21 p.m. Police said a person battered another individual at the residence, but had left the residence prior to the deputies’ arrival.

Police said they are investigating.

Air conditioner stolen An air conditioning unit was stolen from outside a home in the 1700 block of Kennedy Road in Bristol, county sheriff’s deputies were notified April 7. Police said the home is in foreclosure and the theft was discovered by property management personnel. The air conditioning unit is valued at less than $500, according to police.

Property damage An unknown person tossed an ashtray at the entry door to a residence in the 0-10 block of Rocky Way in Boulder Hill, county sheriff’s deputies reported. The force of the ashtray broke a window in the door, police said.

Domestic battery County sheriff’s police responded to a report of a domestic battery at a residence in the 9000 block of Chicago Road in Newark at 12:15 a.m. April 8. Police said they determined that a male subject made allegation that he was pushed by another individual. However, police said no complaints were signed in the incident.

Arrested on Rt. 126 County sheriff’s deputies arrested Jenni Jean Marie Garza, 30, of the 600 block of Davidson Drive, Minooka, while investigating a traffic crash in the 6000 block of Route 126 in Kendall Township at 8:52 p.m. April 5.

Police said Garza, the driver of the vehicle, was found to be wanted on a DuPage County warrant for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of possession of cannabis.

She noted that while the money may be specifically earmarked for these studies, it is “taxpayer money and not free money.”

“The mindset of spending taxpayers’ money just because it’s there needs to stop, especially when we have so many critical needs we could be addressing,” Gilmour said. “We need to be realistic about this and not waste anymore public money on studies.”

She concluded that “this is unnecessary spending” and suggested that people were leaving the county because of high taxes.

Additionally, a small number of people use Metra service, according to Gilmour, and the money can be spent

better on other transit projects that benefit the whole county.

“At a time when the federal government is broke, the state of Illinois is broke, cities are in trouble – let’s not forget that we were elected to represent the taxpayers and we should be watching every dollar very closely,” Gilmour concluded.

Shaw suggested Gilmour send her letter to Hultgren and the village of Oswego.

Johnson, the Oswego village president, has gone on the record as being a strong supporter of proceeding with these studies, as have the other mayors in Kendall County.

“Kendall County is still the fastest growing county in the state by quite a bit,” Johnson said last month. “We just want the studies done so that when federal money becomes available we can say we need a piece of that – without that [study] we have nothing.”

Yorkville Middle School’s YMS S.T.E.P. Team and the Yorkville Stepping Foxes of Yorkville High School are looking to qualify for the Youth Step USA National Stepping Championship at the Youth Step Illinois Regional. The regional will be held at Yorkville Middle School located at 920 Prairie Crossing Drive in Yorkville, on Saturday, April 16. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the show starts at 4 p.m.

Newark boys, girls represented at conference All-Star game

The Newark basketball teams were well represented at the 34th annual Leland Lions Club Little Ten and Interstate Eight All-Star Shootout on Saturday at Plano.

Seniors Kelsea Zitt, Megan DiClementi and Maddie Friestad represented Newark’s girls team on the Little 10 squad that defeated the Interstate Eight, 68-47.

“It was great to play with Megan and Maddie one last time,” Zitt said. “I didn’t think this was going to happen again, and it was great.”

Seniors Jack Clausel, Evan Schomer and Mitch Schmidt, along with Newark coach Rick Tollefson and his staff represented the Norsemen on the Little Ten squad that fell to the Interstate Eight, 114-100.

“We got 100 points, and that’s what we were trying to do,” Tollefson said. “It’s always fun to get out one more time.”

“It was an honor to play one last time, and in a gym where I’ve had a lot of great memories,” Schomer added.

All-Star Girls: Zitt was the second leading scorer from the Little Ten team.

She posted 13 points, including three three-pointers, and four rebounds. Her three-pointer that banked in with 22.2 seconds left in the first half gave the L-10 the 39-20 advantage at the half.

Friestad, a starter, hit a three-pointer with 5:06 left in the second quarter for her only points of the game. She also grabbed five rebounds, as did DiClementi, who tallied a free throw with 4:56 left in the first quarter.

“It was a lot of fun. We didn’t take it very seriously,” DiClementi said. “We all just had a blast. We were laughing on the court. I was glad I was able to be here tonight.”

All-Star Boys: Clausel finished with a double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds), Schomer tallied six points and six rebounds while Schmidt ended up with four points and seven rebounds.

“It was an honor to be a part of this,” Schmidt said. “The environment was great. Everyone was so relaxed.”

“I haven’t done a lot since the season ended, so it felt good to get back out there,” Clausel added.

Mike Klimavicius admits he checks weather updates quite a bit – especially if the forecast doesn’t look good.

Klimavicius is the owner of the Montgomery-based Swing Baseball and Softball Training Center, a new 22,000-square-foot indoor youth training facility that opened its doors in January.

Now that spring is here, inconsistent temperatures and conditions have also arrived. If the weather is bad, business is good – and so far, most of April has kept the facility and Klimavicius busy.

“Those who come here are very grateful for this place when the weather is bad,” Klimavicius said. “They now have accessible tools that will continue to develop their skills. It’s just nice to know there is an alternative for people to come inside and work on things.”

The facility is located at the intersection of Routes 30 and 31. The building used to the Anchor Brush Company.

There are batting cages, pitching lanes, an open field area and a speed and agility area. There are seven cages available for both softball and baseball players.

They cater to as little as 6-year-old teeball players to high-school-aged club athletes. It is also open to the public.

“They’ve done a great job with this place,” Yorkville Fury 12U baseball coach Tom Harris said. “Anything you want to do with your team – hitting, fielding, pitching, an open area for strength and conditioning. A quick email to Mike, and within a matter of an hour, we have time reserved. That’s it. You show up and practice.”

Teams in Kendall County and the surrounding area did not have many alternatives before Swing opened.

“It’s convenient for those in Yorkville,” Yorkville Fury 9U baseball coach Brian Drew said. “There isn’t a place other than ESP [Elite Sports Performance in Oswego] in the area that is comparable.

“With my older son, we used to travel all the way to St. Charles for indoor practices. Having this in Montgomery really saves time,” Drew said.

The Yorkville Fury organization calls Swing home more than any other program. Other teams from Yorkville, Sandwich, Newark, Aurora, Oswego and Aurora University, however, have also practiced there when the weather was unfavorable.

Eight-run explosion in sixth inning seals win for Foxes

sports@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville baseball team exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put away DeKalb in a 17-3 victory after six innings Monday.

Yorkville (6-4, 1-0 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) had six walks in the big inning. DeKalb (3-5, 0-1 NI Big 12 East) was unable to score any runs in the bottom half of the inning – forcing the game to end by way of the 10-run rule.

Yorkville’s late-inning explosion came after a series of mental errors committed by the Barbs earlier in the game.

“We get down on ourselves and its part of our makeup that we have to work through to improve,” DeKalb coach Justin Keck said. “We made a few mistakes, and right now we’re not at a point where mentally some or all of our players are able to let it go and keep playing. I believe in these guys and I know it’ll change.”

The Barbs were hanging right alongside the Foxes for three innings with starting pitcher Jake Perkins on the mound. After three innings, the

Foxes held a 4-2 lead before the offense switched gears and scored 13 runs in the final three innings.

Perkins finished the game allowing 13 hits, with only four earned runs before he was pulled out of the game. The leading batter for the Foxes was center fielder Mark Sommers, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Despite showing their ability to get players on base and score runs quickly, Yorkville coach Scott Luken doesn’t credit his team’s offense as its strong suit.

“We don’t exactly know what our strength is on this team and we’re still trying to find it,” Luken said. “Overall, I would say our pitching has been strong this year, and Ty Liaromatis was great on the mound for us today.”

Liaromatis had a productive outing after finishing the game by allowing seven hits with five strikeouts after six innings.

Yorkville lost to West Aurora, 3-2, on April 5 and saw games against Plano, Oswego and Metea Valley canceled last week.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com Ella Holland took the ball and with the perfect amount of touch played it ahead to her sister and fellow Sycamore soccer player Saydie Holland, who sped past the Yorkville defense for the first goal of a Northern Illinois Big 12 East contest on Tuesday.

Eleven minutes later, Saydie Holland returned the favor to her sister, leading her with the perfect pass for another first half goal, as the Spartans topped Yorkville 3-1.

The Spartans (9-1-1 overall, 4-0 conference) get through the first half of conference play undefeated, and were 4 minutes away from not allowing goal in league action, until Madi Brusak scored on a penalty kick for the Foxes (4-1, 1-1).

The Spartans were up 3-0 at the time because of a goal from Carly Kresge in the 53rd minute, popping in a shot off a rebound in front of the Yorkville goal.

Ella Holland’s goal came in the 25th minute, while Saydie Holland score with 0:48 left in the first half.

The Spartans won by a combined 15-0 against the Foxes last year, and Yorkville coach Lauren Anderson

said she was glad the Foxes have shown that much improvement.

“We started off strong, probably the first 20-25 minutes of the first half we were controlling the game,” Anderson said. “We were playing well but we started to breakdown at the end of the first half. They were just fighting to stay in the game after that.”

Last week, Yorkville topped Coal City with a 7-0 shutout April 6 and defeated DeKalb 1-0 April 7. Against the Coalers, Holly Sutkay scored off a Katie Straznickas cross in the first half, and the Foxes added six more in the second half. Freshman Abi Wahl got the first hat trick of the season with three goals (two assists from Kelsi Brummerstedt). The other goals were from Yari Aguado, Guadalupe Anguiano and Catelyn Peterson. Peyton Willie earned the shutout win in goal.

Against DeKalb, the Foxes scored their lone goal from Yariliz Aguado (assist from Sutkay). Willie posted seven saves.

Yorkville continues conference play with a pair of road games, traveling to Morris on Thursday and DeKalb on Saturday before returning home to face Plano in a non-conference game Monday.

Six Yorkville track athletes made a weekend trip to Southern California to represent Illinois in the largest high school invitational in the United States.

Seniors Summer Pierson and Julia Schultz, juniors Alexis Grandys and Maddie Dearborn and freshmen Nicole Greyer and Emily Eberhart competed in three relays and two open events last Friday and Saturday at the 49th Annual Arcadia Invitational.

“We ran very well as a group,” said Yorkville assistant track coach Chris Muth, who made the trip with the athletes. “There were some very, very good performances and some we wish we could have back. Southern California was rainy for all three days, so that was an interesting twist. The competition was unbelievable. We were very small fish in an ocean. It was great for the kids to see that and the girls stepped up to the challenge.”

efforts of Eberhart, Schultz, Greyer and Grandys, but placed 13th overall.

“It was a tough race and I know they could have done better,” Muth said. “It was very crowded, and we posted a time that could have been a lot better. That’s one race I wish we could have back.”

Greyer, Grandys, Dearborn and Eberhart combined to run the 4x1600-meter relay on Friday night and crossed the finish line in 21:09 to place seventh overall. Pierson capped off the night in the 3,200-meter event with a personal best finish in the event with a time of 10:46.04 to place third in a talented field.

“By far the best race I’ve ever seen out of Summer Pierson was this past weekend in the 3,200. I can’t tell you a place in that race that I would have had her do something different,” Muth said.

On Saturday, Yorkville returned to the competition with the 1,600-meter run and the distance medley relay. Grandys took 15th with a time of 5:08 in the mile event, with Greyer following in at 5:13 for 29th place. Dearborn, Schultz, Eberhart and Pierson ran the distance medley and placed 17th with a time of 12:39.85.

After the Yorkville softball team suffered tough losses to Plainfield North and Coal City, coach Jory Regnier knew her Foxes would learn from them.

Regnier was right. The Foxes have won three straight since then, including a pair of Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference victories by one run against Kaneland (6-5 on April 5) and Sycamore (10-9 last Thursday).

After the 4-1 victory over Sandwich on Saturday, Yorkville was 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the league entering action this week.

Against Sycamore, the Foxes trailed 8-4 but were able to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Bekah Hahn led the inning off with a double, Hannah Bazan got hit by a pitch and Sydney Woodworth recorded her fourth hit of the day. With the bases loaded, Megan Corniels hit a walk-off triple. It was her second hit of the day.

“It’s fun to watch this group of girls play,” Regnier said. “The fight they have and hold one another accountable for having is paramount in these close wins.

They really know how to make things interesting.”

Against Sandwich, Yorkville scored its runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings. Hannah Jaros earned the win on the mound after she threw the distance with six hits, three strikeouts and one walk.

“The key to this game was getting ahead early in the game and scoring in multiple innings,” Regnier said. “Sandwich struggled to get their bats going against Jaros, which allowed us to secure the win without a bit offensive outing.”

The Foxes will face DeKalb and Plainfield Central before being a part of West Aurora’s tournament, which begins Friday against Metea Valley. The winner will play the winner of Oswego/Batavia on Saturday.

“It is always a good tournament,” Regnier said of West Aurora. “We get to see some teams we otherwise would not play against, and it gives us a better idea of what we might be up against in the postseason.”
