Referendum fails by margin of nearly 10-1

The referendum seeking voter approval to issue $16 million in bonds

was defeated in a landslide, with 1,135 voters casting “no” votes and 132 voters casting “yes” votes, or 89 percent to 11 percent.

Two new members elected Koch, Plocher to return to council TONY SCOTT

Two new board members were elected to the Yorkville School District Board of Education Tuesday evening, according to unofficial vote totals.

Incumbent board member Jason Senffner received 1,030 votes and challenger Dr. Garrett Katula received 1,122 votes, edging out challenger Jeffrey A. Fapp, who received 791 votes.

Katula, 49, is a family physician.

Incumbent board member Dr. Robert Brenart, who ran for re-election for one of two seats representing Bristol Township

37N7E, or Bristol Congressional Township, received 1,320 votes.

Two residents, Dr. Shawn Schumacher and Jorge Ayala, ran write-in campaigns.

While the Kendall County Clerk’s Office showed 875 writein ballots cast, information was unavailable late Tuesday evening as to which candidate – Schumacher or Ayala – received the most votes. An official with the Clerk’s Office noted that the results will have to be counted by hand.

Board President and longtime board member Dave Dockstader did not run for re-election, not did longtime board member Dean Fisher.

KENDALL TOWNSHIP

New supervisor, board member chosen KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Steve Gengler is the new Kendall Township supervisor, replacing incumbent Kenneth Walker, following Tuesday’s election.

Gengler received 347 votes to Walker’s 139 votes, and third candidate Jack R. Westphall received 323 votes.

Gengler most recently was a Kendall Township Board member.

In the Kendall Township Board race, the top four vote-getters for four seats on the board were Carolyn Pottinger with 479 votes, John A. Shaw with 466 votes, Doug Thanepohn with 427 and Don M. Hirsch with 416. Candidate Fred Davis received 411 votes.

Shaw, who recently left the Kendall County Board as its chairman after declining to run for re-election, is the new board member, replacing Gengler.

One incumbent Yorkville alderman has been re-elected to the City Council, a former alderman has been returned to the council, and a new alderman has been elected to an unopposed seat.

City of Yorkville voters on Tuesday re-elected Ward 1 Alderman Ken Koch over two challengers, elected Arden Joe Plocher to the Ward 2 seat, also over two challengers, and resi- Ken Koch dent Alejandro Hernandez has been elected as a new Ward 4 alderman in an uncontested ballot. Incumbent Ward 3 Alderman Joel Frieders ran unopposed for his second term.

In the Ward 1 race, Koch received 182 votes to challenger Arden Joe Amy Cesich’s 137 votes and Bob Plocher Allen’s 75 votes.

Koch, 55, an operations specialist at Fermilab, wrote in a questionnaire submitted to the Kendall County Record that his top priorities as alderman would be to “encourage business and commercial growth, add jobs, and maintain our infrastructure, keeping taxes and finances in line.”

In Ward 2, Plocher received 178 votes to challenger Robert Gryder’s 152 votes and challenger Deborah Horaz’s 95 votes.

Plocher, 34, who served a term on the City Council from 2007 to 2011, is a journeyman pipe fitter. He wrote on his questionnaire that his priorities would be “to help encourage and maintain responsible growth that does not place greater financial burden on current residents.”

Last year, Ward 2 Alderman Larry Kot retired from office; his term was set to expire in April.

Also, Ward 4 Alderman Diane Teeling decided to not run for re-election.

Also according to Olson, Shah has also applied with the state for an enterprise zone designation via the Upper Illinois River Valley Development Authority, a regional economic development agency.

A hotel may be locating in the Kendall Crossing development, in the area formerly known as Countryside Center, as soon as next year, a developer announced at a city meeting Wednesday.

Sonny Shah of Kendall Hospitality LLC told the Yorkville City Council’s Economic Development Committee Wednesday that he is proposing a four-story national chain hotel with more than 90 rooms on an approximately 3-acre parcel northwest of the NCG Cinemas movie theater.

The development also will feature an approximately 10,000-square-foot adjacent banquet and conference center, Shah confirmed. The center will seat about 385 people in a banquet setting and 575 people in a setting for a seminar or conference, according to Shah.

The $10 million project is expected to create approximately 70 jobs, Shah said.

Shah said he was unable at this time to reveal the brand of the hotel, as they are finalizing the franchise documents with the chain.

“I will tell you one thing, it’s in the top five (hotel) names in the United States,” he said.

Jason Pesola, partner in the Kendall Crossing development, said he and his partners conducted a feasibility study two years ago to determine if a hotel would work in that space. Following a positive result from the study, Pesola pursued a hotel for the development, he said.

Shah said he was approached by Pesola about the development, and later was introduced to Lynn Dubajic, the city’s economic development consultant, and Kendall Crossing developer Jim Ratos to discuss the development.

“It’s a very nice community, very nice people,” Shah said of Yorkville.

Former bank should become new city hall As we reported this past week, a majority of city of Yorkville alderman voiced support for a proposal to have the city purchase a vacant former bank building at the corner of Rt. 47 and Van Emmon Road from a private owner at a cost of $1,170,000 for possible use as city hall. City staff and police currently share space at City Hall on Game Farm Road. The council may vote on the purchase as soon as their next meeting on April 11.

If the city buys the former bank, the current city hall would be renovated for use exclusively by the city’s

police department.

To finance the purchase, city staff has suggested using a combination of downtown TIF (tax increment financing) funds and the proceeds from a loan that the city would take out for four years at an interest rate of three percent from a local bank.

We believe the proposed purchase has merit and should be seriously considered by the council, given the city’s continuing geographic and population growth. Both city staff and police are already outgrowing their shared quarters and the need for

larger facilities for the city’s administrative functions and police are only going to increase in the years ahead.

We especially like the idea of city offices being located in the downtown.

Over the past decade or so, officials in both neighboring Oswego and Montgomery studied and then wisely decided to construct new village halls in their respective downtowns. In so doing, they continued the tradition of having their downtowns areas serve as community gathering places and focal points. By acquiring the former bank, Yorkville officials can do the

same for the city’s downtown, at a fraction of the cost of building a new city hall.

By moving city offices out of the current City Hall and renovating the building entirely for a police station, the city will buy some time – probably several years – before it will need to construct a new police station.

Though the city’s patrol officers are never far, we also like the idea of the police department being located within walking distance of Yorkville High School, the grade school and public library for a few more years.

Finding a good story’s true makes for historical fun Every once in a while, myth turns into truth, and when it does, it makes history dabblers like me happy.

I must admit that, on the local level, the historical myths that predominate will likely never be proven. We were told, beginning when we were kids, that it’s a well-known fact that some famous or infamous person did this or that thing right here in our own hometown or neighborhood. And sometimes it really happened, which is great, but most often it didn’t – although there’s almost always a grain of truth in every story about the past of our home regions we hear.

For someone like me, who enjoys telling a good story, it’s always a little off-putting when the story is good, but might not be true. That means using a lot of indefinite words and phrases to make sure readers know that the story might be good, but it might also be untrue. And when one of those good stories is proven true, it’s especially satisfying.

For instance, the story I heard as a youngster that the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad really wanted to cross the Fox River at my hometown of Oswego, but didn’t do it because the silly residents here thought railroad technology was just a flash in the pan. Instead, they held out for the road proposed by the Oswego & Indiana Plank Road Company that was to extend from Oswego east all the way to Indiana.

Well, there really was such a plan for a plank road, which really did fall through, with only a couple miles built linking Joliet and Plainfield. But did the railroad really think Oswego was the spot to cross the Fox River

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile and not Aurora? I couldn’t find much, if any, proof of that. Until one day when I was researching stagecoach routes, and came across Ensign, Bridgman & Company’s “Rail Road and County Map of Illinois” published at New York in 1854.

The map showed the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad tracks heading west of Chicago to Junction – today’s West Chicago – where the line split, one running northwest to Galena and the other, the Aurora Branch Line, curving south. But instead of the Aurora Branch Line crossing the river at Aurora, the map showed it passing through Aurora, running down the east bank of the Fox River to Oswego – where it crossed and ran west.

Obviously, the information for the map had to have been collected earlier than its publication date, suggesting that when the mapmakers interviewed Aurora Branch Line officials the plans were still in effect to cross the river at Oswego. By 1852 the railroad was itching to cross the river and get its rails headed west, but Oswego officials demurred, so when construction began in 1853, the line crossed at Aurora and ran southwesterly across the prairie to Mendota. Marcus Steward told railroad officials if they ran the line through his land, he’d build a town. They agreed, and he laid out Plano on Feb. 28, 1853. The rails reached the new town that August. Thanks to Oswego’s stubbornness, the rail line

missed the village by two miles to the west.

And then there’s the great story of town-building chicanery in the early 1800s that resulted in Montgomery not only losing its stagecoach link but its post office to Aurora. In that era, a post office was vital to growth, allowing residents to keep in touch with the rest of the country.

The way the story’s been told over the decades is this: The original southern road to the Galena’s lead mining region extended from Chicago to Naperville and then west to Montgomery where it crossed on the Fox River ford before heading westerly across the prairie to Dixon and then Galena.

But Samuel and Joseph McCarty were vigorously promoting their own new town that eventually became Aurora, and realized a stagecoach connection bringing passengers and mail was vital. So they organized a crew to improve the road to Naperville through the timbered wetlands comprising the Big Woods, building bridges and leveling the route into a decent road.

They also told officials of the Frink, Walker & Company stagecoach line that carried the mail and passengers that they’d provide free room and board for the stage drivers as well as the teams pulling the coaches.

The problem was, the story went, a post office had already been awarded to Montgomery. So the McCartys somehow managed to intercept the official postmaster’s key before it was delivered to Montgomery. In that day, the mail was defined as whatever was in the official portmanteau – a large canvas bag secured with a special

lock. By law and regulation, a person couldn’t be a postmaster without the key, which Aurora took.

It was a great story, but couldn’t be verified until the National Archives digitized the records of postmaster appointments. Debbie Buchanan, who rides herd on Montgomery history, decided to search the database almost as soon as it was posted, and she struck local history gold.

Turns out, Elijah Pearce (a brother of the Pearce founders of Oswego), who maintained a stagecoach inn at the Montgomery ford, was appointed postmaster of a post office named Wyponsie – probably after famed Chief Waubonsee – on Aug. 25, 1834, which would have made it one of the oldest post offices in northern Illinois. But then those scalawags up in Aurora apparently managed to get Pearce’s key, which they kept. With no key, the Wyponsie Post Office was discontinued Nov. 16, 1835. The Aurora Post Office was officially established March 2, 1837. Montgomery wouldn’t get its own post office until 1844, meaning Aurora stole a decade-long march on growth.

In 1908 when an Aurora history was written, longtime residents were asked what they felt were the most important happenings in the community’s history. Second on the old settlers’ list was “The getting of the post office from Montgomery.”

Great stories make history fun.

I believe the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has been focused on protecting consumers since the 1970s, should maintain its jurisdiction over this area. Rolling back the FCC’s proposed rule puts the full authority for compliance back with the FTC. In a bid to expand its own power, the FCC stripped the FTC of its jurisdictional authority and reclassified ISPs as common carriers.

The FCC’s power grab created a dual-track system in which the FCC applies its own set of rules to ISPs while the FTC monitors the rest of the internet ecosystem. The FTC has been the “cop on the beat” for decades and the FCC’s decision created a bifurcated approach in order to advance its own political clout.

Plattville Cemetery sets annual cleanup and meeting KENDALL COUNTY RECORD

The annual cleanup at the Plattville cemetery is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, with a rain date scheduled for Wednesday, April 12. Any grave blankets or artificial flowers will be removed and discarded the day of the cleanup.

The annual meeting will be at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, April 9, at the Plattville Methodist Church. The meeting is open to anyone with an interest in the cemetery.

The cemetery association appreciates and thanks those individuals who have supported the cemetery with their donations and memorials.

‘No’ vote recommended on shooting range plan

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Kendall County hearing officer has recommended a negative vote on a special use zoning request for an outdoor shooting range in the county.

Wally Werderich, a special use zoning hearing officer, reviewed the request at a meeting Monday evening in Yorkville, and heard testimony from neighbors of the property at 16502 Church Road in unincorporated Lisbon Township who oppose the project.

Following the testimony, Werderich reviewed the required “findings of fact” to determine whether the special use zoning should be approved, and said the project did not meet the standards. The project will now be reviewed by the Kendall County Board’s Planning, Building, and Zoning Committee at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, at the County Office Building, 111 W. Fox St. in Yorkville. The committee will then forward its recommendation to the full County Board.

Robert Delaney is proposing a 24-lane shooting range on his approximately 30-acre property. The range would have berms and be subject to 33 conditions under the special use zoning, according to information from the county. One of those conditions is that pistols will be the only firearms allowed to be used at the range. Delaney currently uses the property for private shooting for friends and family, although residents at the meeting claimed that it was being used for classes, as well.

“Mr. Delaney has shown by his actions a willingness to skirt the regulations and shove this gun range down our throat,” Peterson said.

White Willow Road resident Joe Phillips said he was concerned the shooting range would bring down his property values and those of his neighbors. He also claimed that the current range is situated so people are shooting right at his property.

Phillips said he recently called the sheriff’s office when those using the range were shooting towards his property, and questioned the regulation of the range. He noted that a company had been advertising shooting lessons at the range.

“I think it’s kind of an open game out there,” Phillips said. “I don’t know what’s really happening.”

Yorkville attorney Daniel J. Kramer, representing Delaney, said it would be better to have a supervised range. He pointed to the 33 conditions that would restrict the use in the special use zoning.

Kramer said there is “a need for this type of facility in the community.”

Kramer also said that the courts have ruled that a special use request should be granted if the conditions are met.

“Popular or unpopular, pleasant or unpleasant, the Illinois courts have said if a governmental body takes upon itself to give that checklist and you go through that checklist and the applicant can make and comply with each of those provisions, then it’s a ‘must’ not a ‘may’ of granting the special use,” he said.

Manufacturing to exit Oswego Township plant

“Any employees who are impacted will have the opportunity to apply for other opportunities within Caterpillar,” Miller said.

Gryder also said the Caterpillar representative told him local officials could speak to the company’s director of real estate about the future of the plant site. Miller said the company would “work with community leaders” on that issue.

“Production will not be fully moved out of the facility until the end of 2018,” Miller said. “During that time, Caterpillar’s nonproduction workforce will continue to work at the facility. The company will work with community leaders to determine the future use of the facility as the company goes forward.”

Caterpillar representatives have notified local government officials that the company plans to move its manufacturing out of its Oswego Township plant.

Caterpillar had announced in January that it was considering the move, but it has now made it official, according to Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder, who learned of the move in a call from Caterpillar representatives Friday afternoon.

In a statement Friday, the company said that although manufacturing will move out of the Oswego Townshipplant, the company plans to maintain an office for engineering and product support work at the plant. The transitions are expected to be complete by the end of 2018.

A Caterpillar spokesman said in January that 800 of the plant’s 2,000 workers were involved in production.

Gryder said the Caterpillar representative told him that employees would be able to go through the human resources process and be able to apply to the jobs that were leaving town.

“While it’s not good news by any stretch, I was pleased that they weren’t precluded from making an attempt if they’re able to do so,” he said.

The statement says that Caterpillar will transition its prime products currently made in the local plant to the following Caterpillar facilities: large wheel loaders and compactors to Decatur, Illinois, and medium wheel loaders to North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Though referred to by company officials as the firm’s Aurora plant, it is physically located in unincorporated Oswego Township adjacent to Montgomery’s municipal limits, west of Ill. Route 31 and east of Orchard Road.

Caterpillar has operated the plant at that location since 1957. At one time, the plant employed more than 6,000 workers.

In addition to providing a major source of jobs, the plant has been a significant source of property tax revenue for local governmental agencies over the years, including School District 308, based in Oswego.

According to Kendall County property tax records, Caterpillar owns four parcels in the county: three smaller parcels and its plant at 275 Route 31.

The records show Caterpillar paid $1,244,318 in property taxes this past year on the plant. Of that amount, $846,792 went to School District 308.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Juvenile son batters mom Yorkville police were called to the Rush-Copley Emergency Center in Yorkville April 2 for a victim of a domestic battery. Police said they determined the victim was battered by her juvenile son, who was later taken into custody at his residence. Police said the juvenile was referred to court services for charges.

DUI Yorkville police arrested Sergio Miramontes, 25, of the 2000 block of Helmar Road, Yorkville, for driving under the influence at 12:44 a.m. on April 2. Officers responded to the area of Fox and Mill streets regarding a vehicle that had been running and parked on the roadway. Police said it was discovered that Miramontes, the driver, was intoxicated.

Juveniles use counterfeit money Yorkville police identified three juveniles allegedly using approximately $300 in counterfeit money at a business in the 1500 block of North Bridge Street March 31. Police were called three times to businesses in that block that day regarding the counterfeit money. The juveniles were referred to Kendall County court services, police said.

Intent to deliver, possession Yorkville police arrested Trevor Alexander, 30, of the 900 block of Kensey Court, Plano,

on March 29 at 4:30 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver after police were called to the 300 block of Countryside Parkway for a report of a male causing a disturbance. Police said they found Alexander in possession of a controlled substance. Alexander was taken into custody and felony charges are pending, police said.

Possession of alcohol, pot by minors Yorkville police were dispatched to a parking lot in the 900 block of Mill Street April 2 at 11:24 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle. When officers arrived they found five juveniles in the car. Two of the juveniles claimed ownership to cannabis, paraphernalia and alcohol in the car and were cited, police said. The other three juveniles were not charged, police said. All five juveniles were released on the scene after parents were contacted and arrived to take custody of them, police said.

Customer chases employee Yorkville police investigated a report of disorderly conduct at a business in the 1400 block of Cannonball Trail on March 29. Police said a customer was causing a disturbance in the business and “allegedly chased an employee around the parking lot.” No charges were filed, police said.

Motorist strikes police vehicle, charged with DUI County sheriff’s deputies arrested Mary O’Connor Verhagen, 42, of the 600 block of Cherry Street, Sugar Grove, after the vehicle she was driving struck a Yorkville police vehicle at Route 47 and Waterpark Way in Bristol Township March 31 at 1:29 a.m. Police said the Yorkville police vehicle was stopped to investigate another accident. Police said Verhagen has been charged with driving under the influence, and cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and no proof of valid insurance.

Inmate damages TV County sheriff’s deputies arrested Alex C. Deverick, 25, of the 300 block of West 92nd Street, Chicago, at the county jail April 3 at 2:38 p.m. on a charge of criminal damage to property. Police said that Deverick, an inmate at the jail, used a mop handle to strike a wall-mounted television. Damage to the television was estimated at $200, police said.

Juvenile injured in crash A 17-year-old received non-life-threatening injuries when the vehicle he was driving on Line Road near Holt Road in Seward Township left the roadway April 3 at 4:20 a.m. and struck a utility pole, according to the county sheriff’s office.

ID theft attempted A Bristol resident told county sheriff’s deputies April 3 that someone attempted to open credit card accounts using her personal information between Feb. 26 and March 12.

Police said they were summoned to the area of the crash on a report of someone driving in the ditch on the north side of Route 126. A Schlapp Road traffic sign was also struck and damaged. Parkview Christian Academy conducted its science fair Tuesday, March 21. Students were able to show off their projects at an evening ice cream social.

Kindergarten and first grade completed class projects. Second through sixth grades competed with their individual projects.

There were two top winners in each class with each winner receiving a gift card to NCG Cinemas. There were two overall Best in Show projects, and they received tablets.

Lisbon Grade School announces valedictorian, salutatorian KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Lisbon Community Consolidated Grade School recently announced the valedictorian and salutatorian for the 2016-17 school year. Valedictorian has been awarded to Morgan Long.

She achieved a 3.90 GPA during her time at LGS. Salutatorian designation has been awarded to Madison Malone. She attained a cumulative GPA of 3.80. Congratulations to both award winners.

Yorkville beat Greenback (Tenn.) 7-1 on March 31 behind a complete-game, nine-strikeout performance from Sewruk. Haddox doubled and drove in two runs and Lucas Farren scored two.

Yorkville’s Michael Wojcik threw a complete-game five-hitter, striking out six, as the Foxes beat Northwestern (Ohio) 2-0 on March 31. “He is aggressive with fastballs in the strike zone and a grinder with two strikes until he makes sure he can put something in play,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “And he doesn’t just connect, he hits the ball hard. Regardless of what pitchers throw, he has

managed to find counts where he can drive the ball.”

Reifsteck seems to speak with disdain about any at bat not ending on his terms.

“I’ve always been taught to be aggressive. You’re not up there to walk, you’re up there to hit,” Reifsteck said.

Brendon Reifsteck knows his baseball, and he knows his bats.

When Reifsteck and Yorkville took their spring break trip last week, they got a taste of baseball history. The Foxes visited the Louisville Slugger Bat Museum and Factory, where bats have been made since 1884, en route to Tennessee.

Reifsteck has an appreciation for that history.

He previously took a trip to the Louisville museum with his family. Born and raised a St. Louis Cardinals fan, Reifsteck intentionally wears the No. 20 of ex-Cardinal great Lou Brock.

“He had the same birthday as me, too,” Reifsteck said. “I loved his speed and his mental ability. He’s one of the greats.”

Reifsteck had a pretty great road trip.

The Yorkville senior went 10-for16 with three doubles and seven runs batted in. The Foxes (8-0) went 5-0, the last four at the Daily Times Classic in Maryville, Tennessee. Yorkville scored 44 runs over the five games.

For his efforts, Brendon Reifsteck is this week’s Record Athlete of the Week.

“Our whole lineup, one through nine, just hit the ball so hard,” Reifsteck said. “No at bats were wasted.”

Reifsteck is never one to waste an at bat.

The right-handed hitter led the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference in batting average (.467) and on-base per-

That attitude toward bat and ball runs hot in the Reifsteck family.

His dad played baseball growing up in downstate Lincoln and later in Freeport, his mom softball in Peotone.

It’s a split Cardinals/Cubs household, Reifsteck following his dad’s St. Louis allegiances.

“Last year, Cubs, that was a heartbreaker,” Reifsteck said.

Reifsteck’s parents got him started at a young age playing T-ball. He didn’t need encouragement to work at his craft.

Reifsteck joined the Lincoln-Way Prospects travel baseball program three years ago. Reifsteck goes to the Baseball Institute every Sunday with his younger brother Josh to hit in the cages for an hour or two. When that’s not enough, he’ll do tee work in his garage.

Reifsteck last week committed to play baseball at Wisconsin-Platteville, where he plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

Regardless of what position Reifsteck’s at, Luken likes penciling his name in the lineup every day.

“Brendon exudes a level of confidence that is a good trait, not in any way a cockiness or ego,” Luken said.

“He has confidence in his abilities day in and day out. I like the way he carries himself.”

Reifsteck likes the way the Foxes are carrying themselves.

Perfect through two weeks, they remain guarded about getting ahead of themselves. It’s a long season.

“We’ve started off great, better than ever, but we can’t stop working hard,” Reifsteck said. “Coach told us that on the bus ride going home. What we did down there doesn’t mean we can’t stop working. We’ve all talked about it, and we’re getting after it in practice this week.”

Working overtime Yorkville beats Plainfield Central in 12 innings on Evans HR, loses in eight at Kaneland

It’s been a thrill ride.

Yorkville’s softball team has put coach Jory Regnier on one in the last week.

The Foxes beat Plainfield Central 6-4 in 12 innings on Saturday, Dani Evans delivering the game-winning two-run homer. Yorkville scored two runs in the top of the seventh Tuesday at Kaneland, but came up short 6-5 in eight innings in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East opener.

Yorkville’s last four games have been decided by the winning team’s last at bat. The Foxes rallied with three runs in the seventh to beat Coal City March 29, and scored one in the bottom of the sixth to edge Plainfield North 1-0 March 28.

“This group of kids, they have a lot of heart - they play until the last out is made,” Regnier said. “That’s why we are in so many games. They don’t stop playing. If we get down, we don’t pout about it. They are doing whatever they can to pick each other up.”

Evans, a sophomore outfielder, hit two home runs in the Plainfield Central win. Ally Martin also went deep to back the pitching of Hannah Jaros and Allyson Dilday.

“Dani is one of those kids, she is always confident at the plate,” Regnier said. “She is an explosive hitter.

If she doesn’t hit a home run she is hitting the ball hard somewhere.”

Beating Plainfield Central, a program that’s won five straight regional titles, was big for the Foxes.

“It was a great win,” Regnier said.

“They are always a good program, they have 11 seniors this year, a lot of experience. That kind of win says a lot about our girls and where we are at this season. They really had to earn it.”

The Foxes (7-2, 0-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Kaneland, but the Knights answered with four runs in the fifth.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Haylee Reyes’ ball in the infield was misplayed, allowing Sydney Woodworth and Brittany Thomas to score.

In the bottom of the eighth Kaneland’s Natalie Kraemer reached on a walk, Lauren Callahan put down a punt and Kraemer came around to score on an errant throw to third.

Yorkville only managed five hits against Kaneland pitcher Aly Jesonowski.

“We’ve played well the last couple games, there’s no doubt about it,” Regnier said, “but against Kaneland the hitting wasn’t there like it was the first seven or eight games. Our approach wasn’t as relaxed as it has been. Even when we were ahead, it seemed like we were pressing a little Sarah Minor for Shaw Media bit.”

Austin West, a four-year starter on Parkview Christian’s varsity boys basketball team, was honored at the winter sports banquet as the first 1,000-point scorer in the four-year history of the

program. West scored 1,034 points, leading the team in scoring as a sophomore (396) and again as a senior (362). He was the third-leading scorer during his junior year when seniors Russell Lanehart and Zach Anderson played for Parkview for their senior years.

Yorkville grad healthy and pitching relief for Iowa after TJ surgery

Kyle Shimp, like any relief pitcher, doesn’t measure a job well done these days strictly by his own wins.

He has extra reason.

Just stepping on the mound, a place he’s barely stood competitively the last three years, makes Shimp’s season a success.

Shimp, an ex-Yorkville star now a redshirt freshman at Iowa, earned his first collegiate win March 19 in relief against Kansas State.

His bigger celebration came a month before. Shimp made his first regular-season appearance in an Iowa uniform on Feb. 22 against Loras, working two innings of scoreless relief.

He toasted the moment at dinner with his dad, in Iowa City for the game, and his sister, a freshman at Iowa.

“It was definitely a humbling experience, with the road I’ve taken,” Shimp said. “More than the win, it was nice to just go out there and compete.”

Indeed, it’s been a long climb back up the hill 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate.

Shimp, a 6-foot-7 lefthander, went 4-4 with a 3.33 earned run average as a high school sophomore at Yorkville.

He filled into his frame, recruiting interest took off that summer and he committed to Iowa.

His ascent hit a detour.

Shimp first started feeling elbow soreness and a velocity drop in the fall of his junior year at Yorkville. He shut himself down for the winter, but elbow discomfort persisted in the spring of 2014. Shimp stopped throwing after two outings. He experienced burning down his forearm and tightness, so he only hit the rest of the season.

He wouldn’t throw another competitive pitch during the spring for three years.

“That’s when the circus started,” Shimp said.

Shimp visited three doctors in Illinois, and went through rounds of therapy. Finally, a fourth doctor – this one in Cincinnati – and a third MRI confirmed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Shimp underwent ligament reconstruction surgery, commonly known as Tommy John surgery, on Aug. 30, 2014, a full calendar year after he believes the ligament was first torn.

He missed his senior basketball and baseball seasons. For two months, he wrote a blog charting his rehabilitation and pouring out his emotions about time lost on the diamond.

Shimp sat out a second spring in 2016, redshirting his first year at Iowa.

“There are some guys that come off of Tommy John relatively easy. I took the longer route,” Shimp said. “It was both a physical and a mental battle.

I was fighting a lot of mental battles with myself.”

Shimp still practiced, and dressed with Iowa last year – but didn’t travel with the team. It wasn’t time wasted.

Shimp took advantage of those weekends when the Hawkeyes were on the road to continue his rehabilitation.

“I was hopeful that I could come in and contribute right away last year, but now that I look back on it I don’t think I was ready to compete physically and mentally, “ Shimp said. “The velocity wasn’t there yet, and the offspeed wasn’t there. I had to trust the process.”

Through the Iowa coaching staff Shimp was connected with the Lombard Orioles in the Chicago Suburban Baseball League, a semi-pro league with many college and former professional players.

Shimp finally felt his old stuff come back last summer with the Orioles. His arm strength returned. Shimp’s fastball, which hovered in the mid 80s in high school and dipped lower than that when he hurt his elbow, now touches 93. He’s developed a slider to go with his changeup. Day by day, he feels his delivery grow more repeatable.

“There were times last year that i just felt lost with my mechanics. It was very frustrating,” Shimp said. “The consistency is still coming, but the stuff is night and day from last year.”

Shimp has had ample opportunity to showcase his stuff this spring.

Iowa’s heavily-used bullpen has accounted for close to 50 percent of the team’s innings. Shimp, pitching well, has thrown himself in that mix.

In six appearances this season Shimp is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA with nine strikeouts and only three hits allowed in 8.1 innings. Hardly surprising for a pitcher working the rust out, Shimp’s walks (10) have been high.

He feels strong, though, and grateful to be back on the mound.

“It’s a completely different world when you are out there putting the uniform on with the boys. It’s pretty fun,” Shimp said. “I personally feel as confident and strong as I have ever been.

I’ll be the first to say I’ve had my share of struggles. I’ve stuck with the process and things are starting to shape up. The big thing now is just being prepared when my name is called.”
