By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The husband of the former Kendall County Food Pantry director and the director’s father were formally arraigned on criminal charges and pleaded not guilty in Kendall County court Tuesday afternoon in Yorkville.

Kenneth Spaeth of Yorkville and William Crowley of Scottsdale, Ariz., appeared in court before Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann.

The two men were flanked by their attorneys – Spaeth represented by Edward Edens of Naperville and Crowley represented by Gary Johnson of Aurora.

Kenneth Spaeth is the husband of Maria Spaeth, the former director of the Kendall County Food Pantry, and Crowley is Maria Spaeth’s father.

Yorkville police served a search warrant on the food pantry headquarters in Yorkville and a Kendall County residence last June.

Maria and Kenneth Spaeth, who served as the pantry’s treasurer, resigned from their positions at the pantry two weeks later.

Shortly after resigning, Maria Spaeth was found dead in her family’s Lake Holiday home from a prescription drug overdose, according to the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office.

between $150,000 and $200,000 from the pantry’s coffers, according to law enforcement sources.

A Kendall County judge appointed a special prosecutor to the case in July.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who previously served on the pantry’s board, said he could be called as a witness in the case. In September, the Yorkville police handed over their completed investigation to Charles Colburn of the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Special Prosecution Unit.

New leadership took over the pantry in August and it now has a new name, the Kendall County Community Food Pantry.

At a hearing in February, both Johnson and Edens said they would

be filing motions requesting a change in venue to a court outside of Kendall County. However, Edens suggested after Tuesday’s hearing that he would not be pursuing that request.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the two men said they understood the charges filed against them. Judge McCann said if they are found guilty of the Class 2 felony charges, they could face between three and seven years in state prison followed by two years of probation, as well as a fine of up to $25,000, or up to 14 years in prison if they are considered “extended term eligible.”

A status update on the case was set for 1 p.m. May 10. McCann approved a request by Johnson to allow Crowley to stay in Arizona and not require him to attend that hearing.

The Yorkville City Council showed support for buying the property at 102 E. Van Emmon Road in downtown Yorkville at its meeting Tuesday. The property was home to Yorkville National Bank and Old Second Bank before it was purchased by Imperial Investments in 2012. payment of $215,222 would be due April 1, 2018, according to an analysis by City Finance Director Rob Fredrickson.

During a discussion at the City Council meeting Tuesday evening, Mayor Gary Golinski said he sees the building, ultimately, as a future city hall.

That would free up room at the current City Hall for the police department, which splits space in the current building with city offices, he said.

“It’s the perfect place for a city hall, in the downtown,” Golinski said. “It’s got immediate access to parking, and the true driver is, eventually we’re gonna need a bigger police station. As the community continues to grow, the idea is, if we were to move our city hall to the downtown bank building, we could expand this [current CIty Hall] to a [police station], which would buy us probably upward of eight to 10 years before we would build a new police [station].”

Golinski said the move would spur foot traffic downtown and bring visibility to the City Hall if it was located downtown.

Golinski said the “biggest downside” of the move is money, adding that the HVAC system is in bad shape, the building needs a full remodeling and

the parking lot needs to be resurfaced.

He said on top of the purchase price, the city is looking at another $1 million potentially for the cost of renovating the building.

Alderman Carlo Colosimo said he was in favor of the purchase. He said it would be less expensive than having to build a new police station, pointing to the cost of new or recent police stations built in the area.

“Frankly, I’d rather put a million dollars into that building purchase, and another million dollars to convert it to city use, and even if we have to put another million into this building to convert it to PD use, we’re still millions of dollars ahead,” Colosimo said.

Alderman Diane Teeling said she agreed with Colosimo about the building purchase. She said it is a good spot for a city hall, and it will encourage people to come downtown. She said the city hall location on Game Farm Road is “lost back here.”

Alderman Chris Funkhouser, however, said he had issues with the Game Farm Road building being a police station “long-term.” He also said he had issues with the city obligating TIF district dollars to a project and taking a building off the tax rolls by converting

Most Yorkville aldermen seem to be in favor of purchasing a former bank building in the city’s downtown for potential use as a future city hall.

Aldermen discussed the possibility of purchasing the building at 102 E. Van Emmon Road at the City Council meeting Tuesday evening. The City Council could vote on buying the property at its April 11 meeting.

In a memo to aldermen, City Administrator Bart Olson states that city officials had “for years” discussed the possibility of purchasing the building or using the property for public parking.

“When the most recent tenant, Vault Gym, sought to move operations out of the building in anticipation of a new tenant, the city engaged the property owner, Imperial Investments, to see if they would be willing to sell the building to the City for a reasonable price,” Olson writes in his memo. “After several weeks of negotiations, the City and the property owner agreed to a purchase price of $1,170,000.”

The 14,000-square foot building was a bank for many years until it was purchased by Imperial Investments in 2012 for $714,649, according to county records. Imperial Investments owns several buildings and lots in the downtown area, including the vacant lots east of Route 47 and the restaurant buildings along the west side of Route 47 between Van Emmon Road and Hydraulic Avenue. Imperial Investments paid $37,929.58 in property taxes on the property last year, including $2,390.82 to the city of Yorkville, according to county records.

Olson states in his memo that the property is part of the downtown TIF district, and is eligible to be purchased with TIF proceeds. The downtown TIF fund has approximately $250,000 in reserves, so Olson said the city will need a loan to cover the purchase.

City officials are recommending an $800,000 loan ($860,887 including interest) from First National Bank of Omaha, Yorkville branch, for four years at 3 percent interest. The city would make a down payment of $370,000. The first

“We have very low security for the police department as is,” he said. “We have a bleacher system, which is perfect for somebody to sit up there and take sniper shots at somebody. We have people running in and out of our parking lot while squad cars are parked there. We have football games and other activities. Golinski pointed out that Funkhouser used to work for Boombah in Yorkville. Both Boombah and Imperial Investments are owned by Rick Tollefson. Funkhouser acknowledged that he did used to work for Tollefson for one year, and said that he wants Tollefson to succeed.

Some candidates for elected office in the audience spoke in favor of the project.

Robert Gryder, running for Ward 2 alderman, manages the Law Office Pub in downtown Yorkville, and said he was in favor of the move.

“The benefits of having City Hall be one of the partners in making downtown thrive is just enormous,” he said.

Amy Cesich, a city Park Board member who is running for Ward 1 alderman, said Funkhouser’s issue with using TIF funds is “valid,” but said there are a “lot of ‘pros’” to the move, including having more parking and having room for Parks and Recreation Department programs. She said she is interested to see how the city will pay for the measure.

“Going door to door (campaigning), what’s the number one thing: our taxes are too high, our streets suck,” she said.

Alderman Jackie Milschewski expressed support for the purchase, calling it a “good opportunity” and saying it could bring new people downtown.

Alderman Ken Koch said it would be a “good fit” for a City Hall, and acknowledged that there are a “few issues we have to deal with” in the building before the city can use it as a city hall.

County makes bold move on development loans The Kendall County Board took an innovative step last week when they agreed to use revolving loan funds to lend money to local governments in addition to private businesses.

The county has traditionally loaned money directly to private businesses to help stimulate economic development. The downside to this method was apparent when the county lost nearly $750,000 when they loaned funds to a

Sandwich hotel complex for a project that fell through.

County officials were alerted to a change in state policy that would essentially allow the county to lend economic development funds to local governments, who could then loan the money out to private businesses.

This would permit the county to add interest to its revolving loan fund, while mitigating some of the risk of

loaning money to private businesses. It will also help out municipalities that, due to thriving economic development, have depleted their own revolving loan funds. In fact, Oswego village officials have recently approached the county about economic development loans to businesses within the village, according to Oswego Village Administrator Daniel Di Santo.

While some County Board members

were concerned about not knowing the parameters of the loans to local governments, we are confident that those details will be worked out by the board and we know that such loans will be approved by the board members.

We think this is a bold move by the county that could help add interest to the county’s revolving loan reserves and gives more tools for economic development in the long run.

Koch has a proven track record of having the City of Yorkville live within its means, giving taxpayers a greater value for their dollar; helped to create new jobs; and has refused to punish homeowners with more taxes unlike his tax-and-spend opponent. I believe it’s time we start growing people, families and our communities rather than growing government and, therefore, I’ll be voting for Ken Koch to manage our interests.

Oswego man faces 20 years in state prison Taylor Cano also faces trial in August 2015 shooting incident

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com An Oswego man accused of threatening a massacre in Oswego in August of 2015, and shooting at police, has been sentenced to state prison for multiple crimes against corrections deputies at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis announced Monday.

Judge Timothy McCann sentenced Taylor Cano, 26, of Oswego to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections Friday morning.

Cano was sentenced for three charges of aggravated battery to a corrections deputy and one charge of possession of contraband in a penal institution. He was sentenced to five-year prison sentences on each of the Taylor Cano four charges, but by law the charges must be served consecutively to one another, back to back, totaling 20 years, Weis said.

Cano has been in custody at the

county jail since August 2015, when he was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Cano was sent directly to the Illinois Department of Corrections after the court hearing on Friday, according to Weis.

Cano, who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to all four charges on Friday, will receive mental health treatment in state prison, Weis said.

Cano still will face charges of the attempted murder of a police officer from back in 2015, Weis said. That case has been set for jury trial in June of this year, Weis said.

Weis said that Cano’s actions “have

put the safety of several corrections officers at risk.”

“This sentence will help to ensure that he is given the mental health treatment he is requesting while protecting the public and those assigned to guard him,” he said.

There have been several alleged incidents by Cano taking action against corrections deputies. According to a sheriff’s office press release, Cano allegedly struck a corrections deputy Thursday evening, the night before his Friday court hearing.

Public defender Victoria Chuffo represented Cano, and the cases were prosecuted by Weis and first assistant Nemura Pencyla.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Newark Community High School District 18 is seeking voter approval in the April 4 election to issue $16 million in bonds to cover building renovations, classroom improvements and a gym, locker rooms, fine arts center, concession stand, restrooms and weight room in the high school. District reserve funds will also be used, according to information provided by the referendum committee.

Proposed plans for the high school include new science labs; ADA compliant improvements (elevator); updated Family and Consumer Science room;

new Fine Arts Center for band, chorus, drama and Art Department space for various events; weight room with community access; new competition gym and locker rooms; relocation of baseball and softball fields to adjacent property (all fields will be together with restrooms, concession stand and paved parking); and creation of new classrooms, nurse’s office, social services offices and administrative offices.

According to the referendum committee, the added property tax amount for a home with a $200,000 market value would be $627.28 a year.

Newark high school district seeks referendum passage

Yorkville area residents will see some changes to the Yorkville City Council, the Yorkville School District Board of Education and the Kendall Township Board following the April 4 election.

Last year, Ward 2 Alderman Larry Kot retired from office; his term was set to expire in April. Also, Ward 4 Alderman Diane Teeling decided to not run for re-election.

Resident Alejandro Hernandez is running unopposed for Teeling’s Ward 4 spot, and there is a three-way race to determine Kot’s replacement in Ward 2.

Park Board President Deborah Horaz, former Ward 2 Alderman Arden Plocher, and resident Robert Gryder are running for the Ward 2 seat.

In a three-way race in Ward 1, incumbent Alderman Ken Koch is facing former City Treasurer Bob Allen and former Kendall County Board member and current Park Board member Amy Cesich.

Incumbent Ward 3 Alderman Joel Frieders is running unopposed. He had initially stated that he would only run for one term, but is running for a second four-year term.

In the Board of Education race, incumbents Dr. Robert Brenart and Ja-

son Senffner are running for re-election. Board President and longtime board member Dave Dockstader is not running for re-election, nor is longtime board member Dean Fisher.

Senffner and residents Jeffrey A. Fapp, a web development consultant, and Dr. Garrett Katula, a physician, are running for two seats with fouryear terms on the board.

Brenart is running for re-election for one of two seats with a four-year term that represents the Bristol Township 37N7E, or Bristol Congressional Township, per state statute. The other candidates – Senffner, Fapp, and Katula – are running for seats that represent the remaining congressional townships in the school district.

Brenart is running unopposed as a filed candidate on the April 4 ballot, but he is being joined by two writein candidates: professor Dr. Shawn Schumacher and retiree Jorge Ayala.

In the Kendall Township races, the township board ballot includes incumbent board members Don Hirsch and Carolyn Pottinger, and challengers John Shaw, Doug Thanepohn and Fred Davis. Voters will be asked to choose four trustees who will serve four-year terms.

Current board member Steve Gengler is not running for re-election and is instead running for township supervisor against incumbent Supervisor Kenneth Walker and challenger Jack R. Westphall.

Yorkville School District 115 The Yorkville School District Board of Education will see some new faces following the retirement of two long-time board members.

Board President Dave Dockstader is not running for re-election, and neither is long-time board member Dean Fisher.

Residents of the Bristol Congressional Township, or Bristol Township 37N7E, will see incumbent board member Dr. Robert Brenart on their ballots. They will also have the option to write in two candidates: Dr. Shaun Schumacher and Jorge Ayala. Voters will be asked to choose two candidates for board seats in that race.

Residents of the remaining congressional townships in the Yorkville School District will see three candidates for two seats: incumbent Jason Senffner, Jeffrey A. Fapp, and Dr. Garrett Katula.

To promote an education that prepares children for the challenges of the 21st century.

I will promote excellence, global outlook, diversity and respect for multiple cultures in the educational goals.

Schools are the heart of our community, and I enthusiastically support public education. The northern end of the district lacks board representation, and few on the board have children in the district. Living at the northern end with kids attending three different schools—soon to be four—I am invested in serving this community.

My children have benefited greatly from their journey from Circle Center through Yorkville High School. I would like to give back to the district by utilizing my experience within the community to help steer our school district to even higher academic and extracurricular achievements.

What differentiates you from the other candidates running for board seats?

I have been and still am a professor. I have significant corporate experience that kept me in contact with industrial and academic leaders around the world. I understand the importance and the impact of technological advancements in industry and in education.

There are many commonalities among most individuals who run for school boards, a sense of community service an interest in the development and success of the upcoming generations. My personal contributions are in the areas of curriculum development, particularly integrated with technology, and finding which are the best ways to reach each student.

My background in technology provides insight into tech issues that would be an asset, as we seek to balance technology with tradition. Volunteering in my kids’ schools, I see a lot of what the district has to offer, and hear about a lot of areas where it can be improved.

My medical practice is located in Yorkville. I have close relationships and extensive knowledge of the concerns of Yorkville families. My background with the youth athletic organizations gives me insight into the needs of some of our community organizations. Being a member of the Yorkville Educational Foundation, I have additional experience pertaining to the needs and potential financial solutions of our school district. I currently participate as a teacher iin a postgraduate program.

To help build a district where the educational experience is more equitable for all students.

I support full-day kindergarten, activity busing for students, and a stronger partnership with their families.

My priority as a school board member would be to encourage our school district to continue to grow academically and be competitive with the top school districts in the state.

If elected, what would be your top priority as a board member?

I will promote excellence and accountability as well as a personalized and diverse education with high academic standards for all.

Being part of a group effort, students, teachers, administrators , and board members to design individual instruction for each student and help them recognize their strengths and how to build on them.

What can local school officials do to help ensure the district receives its share of funding from the state?

Increase contact and communication with state and federal representatives. Working closer with other boards through the Illinois Association of School Boards to collectively advocate to the state for receiving our share of educational funds.

Be involved in the lobbying efforts of school organizations,such as the Illinois Association of School Boards, as well as personal involvement in political campaigns.

We depend too heavily on property taxes in Illinois, putting our schools at risk. School officials should inform the community about the situation and encourage engagement with our representatives to affect change.

In the shadow of the Illinois financial crisis, the financial goals should be that of responsible spending and assuring accountability.

Additional resources will need to be identified to enhance and grow school programs and extracurricular activities. It would be my goal to incorporate other community resources and businesses through such organizations as the Yorkville Educational Foundation.

Technology enhances our kids’ education in exciting ways, but it should be viewed as a tool to help, not the primary focus. Technology cannot replace good teaching or direct student interaction.

The ability to utilize and adapt to advances in information technology is mandatory for all successful teachers and students. However, fundamental knowledge in reading, writing, and arithmetic is a necessity. It should be the school district’s goal to give the teachers the appropriate tools and education to guide and help students understand the use and implications of the technology.

What do you see as the role of technology in education?

Technology needs to be embraced and properly incorporated in the educational goals of our children. I will advocate for the utilization of technology but I will also advocate that high academic standards are maintained for all students in the district.

The role of technology in education is myriad and its value is just beginning to be understood. How a student learns varies among individuals, most productive time of day, auditory, visual, incorporation of physical movement, group collaboration, virtual environments to name a few can be integrated into new curriculums with the use of technology .

Why are you seeking a seat on the School District 115 Board of Education?

As an educator for the past 27 years, I value education as an avenue for a more prosperous, joyful life and for its contributions to a stronger community, civic, and political environment. As a YHS alumnus, I value service to our schools and the community.

I feel that my educational philosophy and value system lines up with most of the people I meet in Yorkville. I feel like I can be a voice for our community.

What differentiates you from the other candidates running for board seats?

Serving students throughout my lengthy career in education greatly differentiates me from other candidates. Teaching in higher education and coaching youth have provided me with a strong understanding of students’ emotional, social, and cognitive needs, the necessity of constructing effective educational curricula and policy, and the importance of engagement in school and community spirit.

I feel strongly that my 19 years as a teacher is a huge difference between myself and other candidates. Even though I teach in Oswego and not in Yorkville, I am in the classroom everyday which provides me with a strong understanding of curricular topics and the ability to make decisions based on what is best for all students.

If elected, what would be your top priority as a board member?

My top priorities as a board member are to support our schools through pragmatic staff professional development and curricular needs, foster excellence in teaching and learning, and cultivate inspirational partnerships between our schools and community.

Besides the obvious answer of “doing what is best for students”, I am in the early stages of talking to people about how to get more factories in Yorkville to ease the tax burden for Yorkville residents. I believe that this is one of the only ways that we can help lower the burden to district residents.

What can local school officials do to help ensure the district receives its share of funding from the state?

Serving as Vice Chair for the Faculty Advisory Council to the Illinois Board of Higher Education, I have learned the significance of working with legislators and advocating for increased funding.

Although our current educational budget is experiencing tremendous instability, local officials must create a strong message, advocating for the imperative need of substantial funding.

I feel that local school officials and all other districts throughout the state are all in similar financial situations. Talking to local politicians is a great start, as well as talking to the appropriate channels in Springfield.

What do you see as the role of technology in education?

Technology in schools is constantly changing. I think that while it is important to keep up with technological advances that help District 115, we also need to have a clear vision for the future and possible adaptations, due to advancements in technology.

Motorist arrested after 13 trying to elude police SHAW MEDIA Plano police arrested James L. Pheal, 38, of the 1200 block of Marshall Boulevard, Aurora, in the vicinity of Route 47 and Galena Road in Yorkville March 24.

Police said Pheal faces charges of fleeing and eluding, driving on a revoked license, resisting a peace officer and endangering the life/health of a child. He was also cited for failure to properly secure a child under age 8 in a child restraint system, disobeying a stop sign and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Police said felony charges are pending against Pheal.

Police said at about 11:08 a.m. they attempted to stop his vehicle for a traffic violation in the area of Rock Creek Road north of Miller Road. Police said Pheal continued to drive north on Rock Creek Road and turned onto eastbound Galena Road at speeds of more than 80 mph. Police said they stopped their pursuit of Pheal’s vehicle, but soon located it near Route 47 and Galena Road where it had stalled.

When officers reached Pheal, he resisted arrest. A struggle ensued between Pheal and an officer. When the officer attempted to tase Pheal, he kicked the device out of the officer’s hand and then fled into a farm field where he was eventually taken into custody with the assistance of Yorkville police and Kendall County sheriff’s deputies. Police said a female passenger in the vehicle was detained and a 2-month-old infant in the front seat of the vehicle was found unrestrained.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services are assisting with the investigation, police said.

Criminal damage to property on Bruell, East Main Yorkville police responded to a home in the 300 block of Bruell Street the morning of March 18 for a report of a fence that was torn down between March 17 and March 18. A bench was also knocked over on the property

Driving without headlights Yorkville police cited Michael Murphy, 68, of the 2300 block of Woolley Road, Oswego, March 20 for driving without headlights when required, improper lane usage and operating an uninsured vehicle following an accident on Galena Road at Cannonball Trail. Police said Murphy’s vehicle was traveling eastbound on Galena Road at Cannonball Trail at approximately 7:41 p.m., while a second vehicle, driven

by Luisa Solis, 44, of the 200 block of Burnett Street, Yorkville, was traveling westbound on Galena. Police said Murphy’s vehicle was traveling without headlights and crossed the center line, striking the rear side quarter panel of Solis’ vehicle. Murphy was injured in the crash and taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Solis and her two passengers, a 22-year-old Yorkville woman and a one-month-old baby girl, were not injured in the crash.

Lisbon kindergarten registration set KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Kindergarten registration for Lisbon Grade School District #90 will be held at the school on Friday, April 7 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the school library. During registration, the incoming kindergarten students are invited to visit the current kindergarten classroom.

While their children are in class, parents will go to the library to pre-register the students for the fall session. At this time, registration and enrollment forms need to be completed. Information needed to complete these forms include: names and telephone numbers of the child’s doctor and dentist, phone numbers where the child’s parents can be reached during the day and a relative or neighbor whom the school should contact if unable to

Hultgren gives statement on health care bill SHAW MEDIA U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, released a statement Friday afternoon on the withdrawal of the American Health Care Act, which had been scheduled for a House vote that day.

“I have heard loud and clear from thousands of my constituents that they want a health care system that is more affordable and works for them,” he wrote. “I had great concerns about this bill, and expressed many of

those to Speaker [Paul] Ryan and House leadership. But maintaining the status quo is simply unacceptable.

“Too many are paying monthly premiums higher than their mortgage. Too many Medicaid recipients who need care can’t gain access to a primary care doctor. Too many only have one insurer providing one plan in their area.

That is wrong. Doing nothing isn’t an option.

We must take steps toward real health care reform that will benefit Illinois.”

Senior Jasmine Mitchell is back after playing freshman and sophomore year, and will play first base and pitch. She’s expected to share pitching duties with Sophie Schomer, one of at least four Newark freshmen who could contribute.

Junior Riane Tomsa played outfield last year, but could move to third base at some point.

“She’s a nice offensive player with excellent speed, another gap hitter,” Crackel said. “She works as hard as anybody.”

Two other juniors, Nikki Kala and Becca Sweeney, will play center field and catcher, respectively. JJ Mitchell, Meggie Scott and Lexie Long are three other freshmen who could contribute.

“We’re a lot younger, but I think there will be a lot of competition for playing time,” Crackel said. “I’m hoping it turns into a nice team. I think it will.”

TACKLE CHEER - Practice starts July 24

Registration: Open from March 1st - March 31st

Registration: Open until June 11th

Cost: $225 for a family’s first player, then $200 for each additional player.

Fundraising Obligation: $100 per player, with a $200 max per family. $50 buyout per player/ cheerleader will be available at the time of registration. Tackle football is open to athletes 7 years old through 7th grade. The tackle program travels, playing games at Yorkville Middle School, Burlington, DeKalb, Kaneland, Naperville, Oswego, Aurora Christian, and Plainfield. Practices are held at Rotary Park, in the Grand Reserve subdivision on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7:30pm. YYTF follows USA Football’s Heads Up program to structure practice lengths and tackling techniques.

Age Requirements/Grade Level: The player’s grade will be the first qualifier when determining the level of play. The birthday has been pushed back to June 1st, from September 1st, to allow players of the same grade to play together.

Player Evaluations: All Tackle Football Players will be evaluated on April 8 & 9 at the Yorkville Middle School gymnasium.

Yorkville’s Kennedy Schmidt won the Level 4, Youth D, all-around title at the Illinois USAG Gymnastics Championship meet March 10-12 in Bourbonnais.

She earned a 37.55 all-around after receiving a 9.5 on bars, 9.55 on beam, 9.45 on floor and 9.05 on vault. Schmidt is a student at the Yorkville Intermediate School and is a member of the Phenom Gymnastics team in Oswego.

Newark softball will start games a little late this season.

The school band is taking a trip to New Orleans, which takes away five girls from the softball team. The Norsemen’s overall numbers, though, are sweet music to Newark coach Mike Crackel.

Returning all-conference infielder Alyssa Schofield leads a team 17-deep coming off a 20-10 regional championship. Newark opens its season March 30 against Serena.

“Really happy with 17 girls,” Crackel said. “For a school of 170 that’s a lot of girls out for softball.”

Schofield hit nearly .450 last year as a sophomore. She has good gap power and hits lots of doubles, will hit leadoff and likely slide over from second base to shortstop.

“She’s comfortable hitting leadoff,” Crackel said. “I’m going to leave her where she’s comfortable. She’s a good allaround player.”

Crackel expects his team to be strong defensively, and hopes the hitting comes along. The Norsemen cracked over 20 home runs last year.

“I don’t expect to do that again,”

“Really happy with 17 girls.

For a school of 170 that’s a lot of girls out for softball.”

Yorkville senior off to hot start at plate

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com Ally Martin’s last two softball seasons couldn’t have started any differently.

Yorkville’s senior catcher was hit in the eye taking infield before last year’s season opener against Naperville Central.

“It knocked me out, I didn’t play,” Martin said, “and we got slaughtered.”

Same opponent, far different outcome. Martin went 3-for4 with two doubles and five runs batted in for Yorkville in its 14-2 season-opening win over Naperville Central.

It was a harbinger of good things to come.

Martin was hitting .412 with eight RBIs going into this week, and added two more hits Monday in a win over Hampshire.

For this hot start at the plate, Ally Martin is the Record’s Athlete of the Week.

“She has worked a lot in the offseason behind the plate, and she’s obviously hitting well,” Yorkville coach Jory Regnier said. “She’s doing a lot of good things for us.”

Martin started last season as Yorkville’s starting catcher, but eventually a senior took the job. Martin assumed a utility role, and struggled some with the bat.

“She’s a lefty and going with outside pitches was something she really struggled with,” Regnier said. “Now that’s what she is doing best with. She’s going with that outside pitch and that’s where she’s getting a lot of her key hits. She just seems more relaxed and more confident.”

The confidence is back, for sure. To Martin, it comes down to keeping things simple

and clearing her head.

“Last year I was overthinking everything,” Martin said.

“Now I literally tell myself to see the ball, and hit the ball.

I don’t think about anything else. I have trust in my hands that I’m quick enough to get through the zone. My confidence is back.”

Martin attributed much of her improvement to hitting every week the last few months with Ernie Alvarez of ESP

Baseball/Softball Training in Oswego.

“I wasn’t keeping my weight back on those outside pitches,” Martin said. “You have to let the ball travel a lot deeper in the zone and take it to left field. He knows I have the mechanics. He’s taught me to trust my hands, to see the ball and to hit the ball.”

Martin is already committed to play at North Central College, where she plans to

major in biology or forensics.

She holds a 3.6 GPA, and plans to be a doctor, possibly in pediatrics or as an obstetrician.

On the softball diamond, Martin figured out at an early age that catching was her best fit.

She’s unique to the position, a left-handed thrower, but Martin believes it plays to her advantage.

“There aren’t that many of us, that’s for sure,” Martin said. “Most people don’t see catchers throwing lefthanded and they get freaked out. I have an easier throw down to first base. I think it’s an advantage.”

“She brings a lot of control to the game from behind the plate,” Regnier said. “She’s a good leader, and she’s good with our pitchers.”

She’s definitely strong in the batter’s box, which can be said for many of Yorkville’s hitters lately.

The Foxes have scored 55 runs in their four wins. Senior shortstop Sydney Woodworth entered the week batting .476 hitting leadoff. Sophomore Haylee Reyes came in hitting .471.

Martin, lying in the weeds hitting sixth or seventh, has been the spark near the bottom of the lineup.

“In any lineup you need that one person to break things open hitting-wise. Ally’s done that in a couple games,” Regnier said. “She’s had some really big hits to break things open.

In our lineup there’s not an empty spot right now.”

Juan Leal, in his first year as Wolves head coach, is already used to getting a little bit of everything from Peck.

“She’ll do anything you ask for her,” Leal said. “If i ask her to man mark somebody, ask her to put the ball in the back of the net, ask her to play

in the center, ask her to flush players out wide, she’ll do it all. She’s just so valuable.”

The same can certainly be said for Willie.

The Foxes’ junior made several long runs with the ball throughout the first half, but couldn’t cash in. She finally did just before the half, and added a spectacular goal early in the second.

Willie had a long run down the left side of the field, outran two Oswe-

go East defenders and punched in a left-footed shot from a difficult angle inside the left post.

It left even Yorkville coach Lauren Anderson, used to Willie’s talents by now, awestruck.

“Left foot, extremely difficult shot to make and she pulled it off,” Anderson said. “She’s just an incredible player, great speed, a fun player to watch.

I’m glad she’s on my team.”

Alexe Anderson gave Oswego East back its two-goal lead in the 23rd minute of the second half, her shot from right of the box trickling inside the left far post.

Willie had a few opportunities late, but one shot went wide and another was blocked by Wolves’ goalkeeper Julia Peters.

She noticed the extra attention come her way.

“They had two outside backs, a third in the center, (Peck) was on me the whole game, at least toward the end. I could feel her,” Willie said. “It felt good to get those two goals in but I missed a couple toward the end.

They’re not all going to get in.”

Oswego East 4, Joliet West 1: Jasmine Ruiz scored three goals and Alexe Anderson added a score for the Wolves.

Alyssa Edwards (11:11.35) and Maddie Dearborn (11:13.30) took 10th and 11th,

respectively, in the 3,200.

The 3,200 relay team of Emily Eberhart, Olivia Borowiak, Sam Moreno and Hunter took seventh in 9:39.97 and Eberhart was 12th in the 800 (2:29.03).

Taylor Peck and Oswego East are all grown up now.

Peck, a senior, was one of nine Wolves promoted to the varsity soccer team as a freshman.

She can laugh at the memory now.

“It was a rough season, all of us coming from different clubs,” Peck said. “Now that we’re all seniors it’s going to be an exciting year.”

So far, so good.

Peck had a goal and an assist early Monday, and played big defensively late as Oswego East held off host Yorkville and junior sensation Peyton Willie 4-2.

Willie, a junior committed to Illinois, has scored 51 goals her first two seasons at Yorkville and showed why Monday. She scored twice, closing a 3-0 Oswego East lead to 3-2.

In the closing minutes Peck was called on to mark Willie, to preserve the Wolves’ lead.

“Once we got up by two, we wanted to make sure we wouldn’t let another one in,” Peck said. “(Willie) was very dangerous, very fast. We needed an extra player on defense. Coach told me to stay on her, stay within five yards, don’t let her get the ball. I just tried to stop all the through balls, stay right on her hip.”

Peck earlier did her part offensively, part of an early flurry of Wolves’ goals against a Yorkville team playing its season opener.

Yorkville junior lefthander strikes out nine in win over Sandwich

On a deep Foxes’ pitching staff, five of them throw from the left side.

Stephen Sewruk can’t explain it, but he likes it.

“It keeps hitters off balance,” said Sewruk, one of those lefties. “They don’t know what to expect.”

Sewruk sure had Sandwich guessing Friday.

The lanky 6-foot-2 junior struck out nine batters over five innings, and Yorkville held off Sandwich 4-3 on a balmy late March afternoon.

Sewruk shook off two unearned runs in the first inning, setting down the last 10 batters he faced in his first start of the season before turning things over to Andrew McKee. He allowed two hits and didn’t walk a batter.

Arm soreness limited Sewruk to 2530 innings last year – and it’s easy to see why Yorkville coach Scott Luken is happy to have him healthy and ready to go this spring.

“What don’t you like about him?”

Luken said. “He can throw three pitches for strikes, he’s very composed and he wants to go out there and compete.

He does that every day.”

Sewruk’s offspeed pitches, in particular, were effective pitch Friday.

Sewruk struck out the side in the third inning, two on swinging third strikes down in the zone. He got two more in the fourth for the Foxes (3-0).

“His changeup is like a right-handed pitcher’s cutter. It has a lot of movement,” Yorkville catcher Max Warren said. “Stephen, he’s just got bigger, stronger, more mature and the one thing I like most is his body language.

When you look him in the eyes you know he’s there for business.”

Sandwich (0-4), seeking its first win, meant business early.

Jake Roop made a spectacular overthe-shoulder catch in deep center in the first inning, and doubled off a Yorkville runner. In the bottom half, Austin Salemi whistled a two-out, tworun double over the third-base bag for a 2-1 lead. Sandwich had ample opportunities late to steal a win, though.

The Foxes will be heading south next week for five games in Tennessee during spring break.

“Couldn’t be more happy with the result,” Luken said. “Every day we just try to get a little bit better than before. There’s still some things to shore up, but that’s to be expected.”
