Kendall County Board GOP primary still too close to call

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Still uncounted absentee ballots may determine the winner in last week’s Republican Party primary election for a seat on the Kendall County Board.

Voters in the board’s District 2 were asked to cast ballots March 15 for three candidates and chose Matthew Kellogg, Tony Giles and Diane Selmer. However, just 17 votes separate Selmer and another candidate, incumbent board member Dan Koukol.

The Aurora Election Commission issued a statement March 17 saying that all eligible absentee, grace period and provisional ballots for the primary will be counted on Tuesday, March 29.

As of March 15 there were 96 ballots within the jurisdiction of the Aurora Election Commission that had not been returned. There are 479 grace period and 197 provisional ballots to be counted, according to the commission.

Aurora Election Commission’s results, which was spread out across the city, and called for a referendum to be placed on November’s ballot to do away with the comDiane Selmer mission.

The Aurora City Council voted to place such a referendum on the ballot in 2010, but the Election Commission refused to do so, arguing that the issue could be placed on the ballot only through voter petitions.

“The Aurora Election Commission’s abysmal failure Tuesday night to properly provide online the election results from within its jurisdiction to the public is but the most recent example of the general incompetence of the Commission Board, as well as the staff and the Board attorney, who are collectively and individually wasting local tax dollars,” Weisner said in a statement.

“The Aurora Election Commission is a ‘one trick pony’ – and a lame one at that,” said Weisner.

The statement from the commission did not say how many ballots were outstanding in the Kendall County portion of Aurora. However, Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette Dan Koukol estimates her office is waiting for about 42 absentee ballots in the rest of District 2 located in Kendall County outside of Aurora. Gillette’s office does not count ballots in the Aurora portion of Kendall County.

She added that her staff was reviewing any ballots cast after 7 p.m. on election night when the polls were kept open an extra hour due to a ballot shortage.

“No person shall be provided with a daily breakdown of ballots returned to the Commission, nor shall the Commission release the names of the voters who have ballots outstanding. A count will be provided to the public on the website auroravotes.org,” the Aurora Election Commission statement said.

Last week Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner took note of the delay in the

Kendall County Clerk Debbie Gillette apologized for balloting delays that were reported during last week’s primary election as a near-record number of voters went to the polls.

Gillette told the Kendall County Board during a meeting March 16 that she was getting mixed reports during the election about ballot supply.

“I apologize for any inconvenience. We did Debbie everything that we could Gillette possibly do to make sure the wait (for ballots), if there was any, was short,” she said. “It kind of depended on what judge you talked to – maybe they weren’t sitting at the ballot table, I honestly don’t know, because I’m hearing one thing and people are saying another thing.”

Democratic Kendall County Board member Elizabeth Flowers asked how long some precincts went without ballots.

“I don’t have a good confirmation – some people were saying they were out of ballots, judges came back in and

I asked if they were out of ballots and they said no,” Gillette said. “I was hearing conflicting things. What’s being told to me is that maybe some of them were out 15 to 20 minutes. It was a long day.”

Kendall County polling places were kept open one hour past their scheduled 7 p.m. closing on election night. Earlier in the day some Democratic Party voters reported problems with their ballots.

One Democratic voter in Yorkville reported receiving a ballot that included only the federal candidates. She said election judges asked her to return to the polling place later in the day when corrected ballots would be available.

“We did run into a situation where some precincts did run low on ballots,” Gillette said. “As soon as the judges let us know that their counts were down, we started to print more and delivered them immediately.”

Gillette said that judges and staff at precinct polling places were calling her office before they were out asking for more ballots.

“We printed them and got them out there as fast as we could,” Gillette said.

She added that the polling places do not have the ability to print ballots onsite, but her office does have two print-

ers from which they can print ballots.

While there may have been an issue with ballot supply, the voter turnout was near record highs for the primary. Gillette reported that 45 percent of registered voters in Kendall County cast ballots in either the Democratic or Republican party primary. In the last three primary elections, voter turnout was at about 20 percent of local registered voters.

“It is my hope that the voters continue to come out to vote in the same amount as they did this election. I hope the trend continues. I’m looking forward to this type of turnout in the future,” Gillette said.

She pointed out that this was the first election during which voters could register to vote on Election Day at their polling place.

Kendall County Board Chairman John Shaw said that he was keeping a close eye on the situation and thanked Gillette for handling the reported ballot snafu.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to clerk Debbie Gillette for my several frantic and irate phone calls to her about where in the hell are the ballots,” Shaw said. “You did a great job.”

City Council awards $4.3M contract to Geneva Construction

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Work should begin this spring on a project to improve the water mains and repave the roads in Yorkville’s Countryside subdivision. The City Council approved a base bid plus two alternates Tuesday night from Geneva Construction for the work at a total cost of $4.3 million.

A memo from Brad Sanderson, the

city’s engineering consultant, indicates that the base bid is $3.94 million and that first alternate comes in at $272,657 and the second alternate totals $86,274.

Bart Olson, the city’s administrator, said the project should begin in late April or early May. A pre-construction meeting will be scheduled in the next few weeks with the contractor to develop a firmer timetable.

The subdivision is located northwest of the Route 34 and Route 47 intersection.

The project also includes resurfacing all of the roads in the subdivision something that Olson said hasn’t been done since the early 1990s. The water mains themselves date back to

the 1970s when the subdivision was originally developed.

Olson said the water mains have been prone to breaking and the project should fix that.

He added that residents might see improved water pressure and quality once the project is completed by the end of the year.

Olson said the city received seven bids for the project, a sign that it was a competitive market.

The project also came in $1 million under the engineer’s pre-bid estimate of $5.4 million.

Olson said the project is being funded with revenue from the city’s capital projects fund as well as a bond sold last year.

But official tells council city’s overall financial condition is good

mschury@kendallcountynow.com The City of Yorkville is facing a $158,000 deficit in its general fund for the fiscal year 2017 budget.

The deficit is a small percentage of the $14.6 million in total annual expenditures in the city’s general fund budget, Bart Olson, the city’s administrator said, and the city council could still tweak the budget before it comes up for a final vote next month.

The City Council held a public hearing on the fiscal 2017 budget Tuesday evening. The council will vote to adopt the budget prior to the end of the current fiscal year April 30.

meeting.

Despite the deficit, Olson said that Yorkville, overall, is in pretty good fiscal health.

He said city officials had a couple of years before when they had to make hard choices about cutting expenses or hoped that revenue projections were better than anticipated.

“We’re stable for the time being but we’ve got some deficits in the five-year budget,” Olson said. “If the local economy improves a little bit then it’s not out of the question that sales tax revenue or something similar to that could offset your deficits.”

The city shows a projected surplus of $10,000 in the fiscal 2016 budget that is ending in May. With about five weeks left in the fiscal year, that surplus is expected to come in around $158,000, according to Olson.

Meanwhile the city is projected to have a $4.8 million fund balance next year.

“Fund balance is like your savings account or reserves. Our policy is that

for any given year we have 30 percent of our total annual expenditures in reserves,” Olson said. “The whole purpose of that is to basically withstand downturns in an economy.”

The fund balance is projected to decrease over the next five years, dropping to about 19 percent by fiscal year 2020, according to the city’s projections.

“If our conservative revenue projects and expenditure projects hold with how we think they will, then we’re planning on drawing it down and the city council does have a policy so that when it does go below 30 percent in any given year that we are supposed to make some decisions to get it back above 30 percent,” Olson said.

They have been conservative about revenues, Olson said, and the $4.8 million fund balance gives the city some flexibility “whether we want to throw extra money at roadways or other projects in the downtown. You really have time basically when you have that level of fund balance.”

Yorkville is one of many communities that faced a troubled economy over the past years.

An unfortunate by-product of this was budget cuts that reduced library hours of operation and limited the purchase of needed materials – just when these services were needed the most. In spite of this, the library has continued to serve the community.

The National Library Symbol, which depicts a generic human figure reading a book, was designed by Ralph E. DeVore for use in the Western Maryland Public Libraries. It appeared as the official symbol for the American Library Association in 1982. In 1985 the symbol was accepted by the Federal Highway Administration for inclusion in their manual that sets highway sign standards.

National Library Week has been sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country since 1958.

County coroner should resign The Kendall County Coroner’s Office will start a new era in December when Ken Toftoy completes his final four-year term and a new coroner – to be elected in November – is sworn into office.

We believe that county residents shouldn’t have to wait until December and Toftoy’s term to end for change to come to the coroner’s office. Instead, we believe Toftoy should step down from the position now. By resigning, Toftoy would provide the county board with an opportunity to appoint an interim coroner to complete his term.

We do not make this recommendation lightly. However, we are appalled by surveillance tapes made of Toftoy at his Yorkville office that have been widely circulated on the internet in recent weeks. On one of the tapes Toftoy can be heard discussing how the county building and zoning department could be used to harass one of his political opponents while on another he can be heard making a lewd remark about a deceased individual’s anatomy.

Meanwhile, as we reported March 10, Illinois State Police are continuing with a criminal investigation of the coroner’s office. A state police spokesman declined to comment on the specifics of the investigation, but confirmed that it is of a criminal nature. We look forward to learning and reporting on the results of the investigation when it is complete.

We are concerned the conniving and sophomoric behavior Toftoy exhibits on the tapes – especially when handling the deceased – will continue until he leaves office. While Toftoy remains in office, county taxpayers have absolutely no assurances that it won’t.

We believe the taxpayers deserve a coroner who will show sensitivity, dignity and respect to all the deceased handled by the coroner’s office starting right now.

Local women’s history a story of determination REFLECTIONS Roger Matile While it’s true that women certainly haven’t had an easy time of it during the past several millennia, it’s also true that here in the U.S., they’ve had many more opportunities to make a go of it on their own than in virtually any other nation on earth.

Women enjoyed better prospects in the United States almost as soon as it was established, although it took a long time for the law to catch up to the idea that women were perfectly capable of owning their own land, voting, and otherwise participating as full citizens.

Especially during pioneer times, the frontier was a place where single women could, if not always thrive, at least make their own way.

For some reason, many tend to view the role of women during the nation’s frontier era as similar to that of the poor women who have suffered under the Taliban and other religious fundamentalists of virtually every creed. In reality, women were key ingredients in the settlement of the frontier as it moved west from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

From the 16th through the 19th century era of settlement, women were almost a requirement for a successful settlement. They were most needed by the farmers of that era.

It was not merely a whim that his father immediately sought another wife when Abraham Lincoln’s birth mother died from disease (the dreaded ‘milk sick’). On the Kentucky frontier of that era, it really did take a couple to make a household function.

Husbands were expected to do the farming and other heavy manual labor, while wives were expected to take care of many and varied household tasks – which were also heavy manual labor in their own right – ranging from raising the kids to the backbreaking job of doing the wash to tending large gardens and preserving and preparing food.

It’s sometimes claimed that women couldn’t own property during the frontier era, but that’s simply not true. Here in Kendall County, for instance, at least 22 women obtained

farmers and business owners. The 1850 Census of Kendall County, the county’s first, recorded a number of widows who were carrying on for their late husbands as heads of households.

For instance, 38-year-old Maria Arnold took over for her husband, Levi, when he died in 1844. Arnold was one of the founders, with Lewis B. Judson, of Oswego, operating the first store and post office in the village. After his death, Maria became a successful farm operator. By 1850, her Oswego Township land and holdings were worth $6,000, a considerable sum for the era. Meanwhile, Emeline Gaylord, 48, was overseeing a farming operation worth $2,400 in Lisbon Township while raising four children.

The fair-mindedness of socialism, where basic human needs morph into basic human rights, which are to be satisfied for all by the few who have more than their reasonable share, is an ideal to be embraced. The young are never greedy. It’s always the other guy who is greedy. Sure, they want free stuff like healthcare and higher education at the expense of those who have so much more than them. But that’s not greed. It’s called fairness. It matters not that most of these perceived greedy people actually started out just like them believing in the same ideals they do. They have not yet come to that moment of realization which inevitably transforms most of them into capitalists – their first paycheck. When young socialists get to see how much all of this free stuff actually costs them personally in income and payroll taxes, and they recognize that they’re working the first four months of each and every year solely for the government, the light comes on for most of them. I can’t say all of them because, despite this reality check, some still continue on as Democrats.

Before this game changing moment happens, most young socialists don’t realize that they’re really capitalists in disguise when it relates to a currency they can understand like grades or spots on a team.

When faced with the idea of sharing their success with others who didn’t share their effort, fairness takes on a new meaning for them. They suddenly think that some things are meant to remain a matter of merit.

So my message to young socialists is simply if you want more, do more. Your hard work will guarantee your success. It’s pretty straightforward. If you want to have what a doctor has, become a doctor. If you want to have what a CEO has, become a CEO. You are the only one stopping you.

That’s the beauty of capitalism.

The one right you keep overlooking is the right to exercise your own special talents and abilities and become as successful as you want to be. But don’t expect it to be as easy as sitting around waiting for someone else to do it for you. You’ll find that success is simply overcoming the inevitable obstacles standing between you and your end goal. If you choose the harder road of doing it yourself, your journey to success will end when and where you decide it should end. If you depend on others to carry you through life, it will end when they decide.

And a walk through any pioneer cemetery in the county tells tragic tales of disease and death that struck entire families. From smallpox to diphtheria to typhoid to recurrent malaria, women and their families were always at risk. In those days when a letter writer asked after the health of the person to whom she was writing, it wasn’t an idle question.

It is to their credit, then, that so many pioneer women survived and prospered despite the danger and hardships that most of them took in such graceful stride – something worth recalling as we observe Women’s History Month.

Professor previews spring forecast SHAW MEDIA The official start of spring came this month on Sunday, March 20. Waubonsee assistant professor of earth science Karl Schulze, who teaches classes such as meteorology and climate and global change, took a moment to explain what we can expect here this spring. Spoiler alert: No groundhogs were used in the making of this spring forecast.

March is off to a promising start, so can we expect an “early” and warm spring Karl Schulze this year, or what are your predictions for the overall spring forecast?

Dr. Schulze: The temperatures have

been above normal for the entire winter, and the spring is certainly off to a warm start. I can’t see any reason why we should suddenly drop to below normal for an extended period of time.

Even though temperatures in the middle 60s is awesome for early March, we need to remember that the 30-year average temperature (or “normal high”) should only be in the middle 40s.

While I expect the spring to continue to be above normal as a whole, we can’t rule out a few-day stretch here or there

where the temperatures can drop to below normal.

How will El Niño and other factors impact our weather in the coming months?

Dr. Schulze: The current expectations are for El Niño to weaken later this spring or early summer, so its effect on our weather will gradually diminish.

In addition, El Niño has its biggest impact on Illinois weather during the winter season, so it normally doesn’t have much of an influence once we enter spring and summertime.

Are there any other significant factors that forecasters need to consider or that could change the expected weather patterns?

Dr. Schulze: When meteorologists

attempt to do a seasonal outlook or forecast, one element is El Niño or La Niña. From there, other important factors include soil moisture, amount of ice on the Great Lakes, the amount of snow cover in Canada, etc.

When it comes to soil moisture this year, we are near normal. If you recall the hot, dry summer of 2012, we had temperatures in the 80s on St. Patrick’s Day, and the dry ground allowed the heat and dryness to continue into summer.

We don’t have much ice cover on the Great Lakes this year, which should allow for warmer lake temperatures later this spring and perhaps less prominent lake breezes in Chicagoland this summer.

So given the current trend and all these other miscellaneous factors, it seems like spring should continue being warmer than normal as a whole.

Is there anything helpful that the average person might want to consider regarding the spring. For example, if it starts out unseasonably warmer, is it safe to plant earlier?

Dr. Schulze: I wouldn’t plant any

earlier. Although the spring as a whole is expected to be above normal in terms of temperature, that doesn’t mean we won’t have another blizzard, or another cold Canadian air mass moving in, to cause a hard freeze and the loss of sensitive plants.

In the Waubonsee neighborhood, we still have a 50 percent chance of seeing temperatures at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit all the way through April 29 (on average). Maybe that date can move up a little this year, but since the length of our growing season is plenty to enjoy those flowers, I see no reason to rush and plant them early.

Josephine Eakle will celebrate her 95th birthday on March 28. She was born in Richmond, Ky to Leslie and America (Mary) Lanter.

She was married to James Eakle for 57 years. The couple had one daughter, Linda Wendling (David) and two grandchildren, Amy Clever (Jon) and James Wendling (Michelle). She has three great-granddaughters, Shae Marie, Lily Jo and Shelby Lynn.

Yorkville students enrolled in fifth grade to 12th grade band, choir and orchestra are now selling five-pound boxes of Vienna Beef products as their yearly fundraiser. From each box sold, $5 will be used to buy new music instruments and equipment for Yorkville’s 1,679 student musicians, fund music-oriented field trips as well as award camp scholarships to students wanting to pursue their love of music in the summer.

Seven varieties of Vienna Beef products are available. These include: hot dogs, polish sausage, hamburgers, jumbo hot dogs, corn dogs, original bageldogs and cheddar bageldogs. These boxes are a convenient way to have grill-ready foods on hand throughout the busy summer months.

Boxes sell for $25 each. The last day for orders is Wednesday, April 6. Products will be delivered to students on Wednesday, May 4, for distribution.

For nearly 20 years, dads and daughters in the Yorkville community have made memories at the Yorkville Grade School (YGS) PTO’s Daddy Daughter Dance. This year the theme is “An Evening in the Enchanted Forest”. The dance is set for Saturday, April 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Yorkville High School.

The Daddy Daughter Dance is open to all girls in the community in grades preK12. Tickets are $18 per family and can be purchased at any Yorkville elementary school, YIS or YMS. Adult summer softball registration Looking to play softball this summer?

The Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department has begun registration for both a men’s and co-ed softball league.

Registration will last until Friday, April 8, and is $900 per team for co-ed, and $800 for men’s teams.

The co-ed league will feature a 20game schedule, and the men’s league will feature a 16-game schedule (double-header format) with games being played from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Both leagues are USSSA sanctioned. Shaw Media to acquire Elburn, Sugar Grove weekly newspapers SHAW MEDIA Shaw Media, owner of the Record and Oswego Ledger, is acquiring Kaneland Publications Inc., the publisher of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald. The deal is expected to close the first week of April, the two companies announced Tuesday.

According to Shaw Media Vice President J. Tom Shaw, the acquisition is part of Shaw Media’s strategy to expand its weekly

newspaper network in suburban Chicago.

Last June, Shaw acquired weekly newspapers in the suburban communities of Oswego, Yorkville, Plano and Sandwich.

In October of 2012, Shaw acquired 22 suburban Chicago weekly publications from GateHouse Media.

With the addition of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald, Shaw will publish 31 weekly newspapers in the Chicago suburbs, as well as dailies in DeKalb, McHenry and Will counties.

Hastert sentencing delay approved SHAW MEDIA A federal judge overseeing Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case has granted prosecutors’ request to delay the former U.S. House Speaker’s sentencing until the end of next month, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Judge Thomas M. Durkin has scheduled Hastert’s sentencing for 10 a.m. April 27 at the Dirksen Federal Court building in Chicago. Objections in the case must be filed by April 8, according to the AP. th

The AP reported that a federal court transcript says an alleged sex abuse victim could testify at the sentencing. It’s the first time the court has referenced sex abuse in the case.

Durkin agreed in January to push sentencing back after Hastert’s attorneys said the 74-year-old had health problems.

Youth summer basketball league The Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department will begin registration for the youth summer basketball league on Monday, April 4, and registration will run through Friday, April 15. The program will be held on Wednesday nights only from June 15 to July 13.

Divisions offered include kindergarten (co-ed), 1st/2nd grade (co-ed), 3rd/4th

grade (co-ed), 5th/6th grade boys only, and 7th/8th grade boys only. All divisions are based off of the 2015-16 school year. Registration is $50 for residents and $55 for non-residents.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS DUI among charges Sheriff’s deputies arrested Claudia Jazmine Alejandro-Rivera, 35, of the 1900 block of Burry Circle Drive, Crest Hill, after stopping her vehicle March 22 at 2:26 a.m. on Route 47 and Ament Road south of Yorkville.

Police said Alejandro-Rivera has been charged with driving under the influence and was ticketed for improper lane usage, no valid registration and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Police said they stopped Alejandro-Rivera’s vehicle after being alerted by several concerned motorists. A sheriff’s deputy observed her driving in an oncoming lane of traffic prior to stopping her vehicle.

DUI, drug arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Justin Ely Svoboda, 43, of the 60th block of South River Street, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle at Routes 71 and 47 March 16 at 7:37 p.m.

Police said Svoboda has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of cannabis. In addition, he was

cited for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Police located more than 550 pills suspected to be Valium and a small amount of cannabis and drug paraphernalia while conducting a search of Svoboda’s vehicle.

Svoboda was taken to the county jail in Yorkville pending a bond hearing.

Cannabis arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Reakwon Demon Howard, 20, of the 1000 block of Symphony Drive, Aurora, after stopping his vehicle March 21 at 10:09 p.m. on Route 30 and Gastville Street east of Oswego.

Police said Howard faces charges of possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia and was ticketed for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Paraphernalia arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Anthony F. Fremarek, 20, of the 14000 block of Colonial Parkway, Plainfield, after stopping his vehicle on Reservation Road at Chippewa Drive near Oswego for a lane use

violation.

Police said Fremarek was found in possession of a pipe used for smoking cannabis.

Motorist hits building County sheriff’s deputies ticketed Raymond J. Ridsdale, 53, of the 2000 block of Navarone Drive, Naperville, after they responded to a report of a motorist striking a building that houses a retail store in the 1300 block of Route 30 in Oswego Township.

The collision resulted in no major damage to either the vehicle or building, according to police.

Police said Ridsdale was ticketed for not having a valid driver’s license.

Traffic stop arrest A McHenry resident, Chaz R.D. Rosson, 27, of the 100 block of Glenbrook Trail, was arrested by county sheriff’s deputies after they stopped his vehicle on Helmar Road west of Route 47 for speeding March 19. Police said Rosson was cited for driving on a suspended license and speeding. He was taken to the county jail in Yorkville for booking.

Warrant arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Boulder Hill resident, Concepcion Jose Reyes, 38, of the 60th block of Hubbard Way, March 20 in the 13000 block of McKanna Road, Minooka, on a Kane County warrant for contempt of court. Police said the suspect was taken to the county jail for booking.

No charges in disturbance County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance involving family members at a residence in the 100 block of Rickard Drive in Bristol on March 18. Police said both individuals involved in the incident declined to cooperate with the investigation and there was no evidence of a battery. No charges were filed.

Domestic arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Gavin Michael Redmon, 51, of the 0-1000 block of McHugh Road, Yorkville, on a charge of domestic battery at his residence March 17.

Kendall County fugitive apprehended in Springfield Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force in the direction to find Bates, who had been a fugitive since September of 2015, police said.

“I’m proud to say that from our first post we were able to capture one of our most wanted down in Springfield,” Baird said. “It came from a tip from someone around here and then we worked with the authorities down in Springfield and were able to apprehend him.”

“We’re just looking for new ways to work with the public and communicate and get criminals off the streets.

I was very proud of that,” Baird said.

Last month the sheriff’s office began listing the county’s most wanted fugitives on the agency’s website at www. co.kendall.il.us/sheriff and sharing that information to the sheriff’s Facebook page “Fugitive Friday” feature.

Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird says he believes his office’s initiative to apprehend fugitives by using social media is working.

Baird told the Kendall County Board at the March 16 meeting that the sheriff’s office successfully captured their first fugitive since launching their Fugitive Friday campaign on Facebook.

Members of the U.S. Glen Bates Marshals Service Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force caught fugitive Glen Bates in Springfield on March 14, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

Bates, 32, was wanted by the Oswego Police Department on two counts of violation of an order of protection and one count of domestic battery, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

An anonymous tip was received from a citizen who observed the Kendall County most wanted persons list, and pointed members of the Great

Team 1006 nets 4 state medalists KENDALL COUNTY RECORD

TEAM 1006 wrestling competed in the IKWF state championships March 11-12 at Rockford’s BMO Harris Bank Center.

The team qualified 14 wrestlers to this highly competitive event. On the road to qualifying for state, the team earned regional and sectional championships.

TEAM 1006 finished 13th at the state tournament with 175 teams represented, and finishing in the top 10 at the novice division. Wrestling for TEAM 1006 at the state championships were Joseph Fernau, Luke Barron, Zach Sato, Anthony Cantu, Robert Gonzalez, Braden Hunter, Luke Childers, Brenden Watkins, Julian Navarro, Aric Nieves, Cole Pradel and Derick Platt.

TEAM 1006 had four medalists. Julian Navarro, a student at Yorkville Middle School, became TEAM 1006’s first state champion, going 2-0 in his finals match at 156 pounds in the Novice Division. Navarro capped off an undefeated season with a 26-0 record.

TEAM 1006 competed in the 16th Annual Midget Championships in Danville March 19-20. This tournament is for wrestlers ages 8-10. In total, TEAM 1006 had 13 wrestlers competing: Jason Duy, Aiden Crissie, Noah Dial, Drew Torza,

Joey Griffin, Jack Gillen, Tyler Martinez, Ethan Waters, Ben Alvarez, Ryan Kowalski, Kyle Kowalski, Tommy Isitt, and Braden Hunter.

TEAM 1006 finished seventh to earn a trophy, and seven individuals received a medal. Jack Gillen won the 84-pound title with an escape in double overtime in his championship match, and Braden Hunter pinned every opponent in the tournament to capture the title at 130 pounds.

Other medalists included Ben Alvarez (5th at 101lbs), Noah Dial (8th at 64lbs), Tommy Isitt (7th at 108lbs), Tyler Martinez (4th at 84lbs) and Drew Torza (6th at 72lbs).

Stemmet named IKWF wrestling state champ

Nick Stemmet, an 8th grader at Yorkville Middle School, won the 156-pound bracket at the IKWF state championship wrestling tournament last weekend. He finished the season 41-1.

Stemmet wrestled for both YMS and the Bolingbrook Jr. Raiders Wrestling Club this winter. He wrestled for Team No Ego Wrestling Club for eight years before joining Bolingbrook Jr. Raiders.

Stemmet will compete at Nationals in Las Vegas on March 27.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office.

Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

Mike Crackel was satisfied with how his first season with the Newark softball team panned out.

In 2015, the Norsemen went 18-9 overall and finished second in the Little Ten Conference behind Class 1A state-runner-up Somonauk - a team that ended their season by one run for a regional title.

“We are hoping to build on (last season) quite a bit,” Crackel said. “We have six starters back, great senior leaders and a lot of experience to draw from.”

Two All-Conference seniors return in shortstop Kelsea Zitt (.519 batting average, 10 home runs, 36 RBIs) and catcher Megan DiClementi (.488, 20 RBIs). Seniors Shelby Hoddy (nine wins, 79 strikeouts), left fielder/pitcher/infielder Emily Oldenburg (.297), outfielder Sara Hipsman (.482) and sophomores Riane Tomsa (.424) and Nikki Kala (.347) are back, as well as junior Skye Isenogle and sophomores

Becca Sweeney, Lexi Pagel, Alyssa Schofield, Cheyane Copeland and Regan Tomsa. The newcomers are senior Delaney Drew and freshmen Natalia Elizalde and Alyssa Gittins.

Hoddy is expected to see the most innings on the mound this spring while Oldenburg, Copeland and Kala will also see time in the circle.

“We’ve got some options and some people ready to step up,” Crackel said.

“It’s all about opportunity.”

Newark’s season started on Monday at Aurora Central Catholic. The Chargers won, 10-0 in five innings with hits from Zitt, Isenogle and Oldenburg.

The Norsemen will start conference action in the two-game series against Somonauk on April 4-5. That will be followed with more two-game league series against Earlville-Leland (April 7-8), Serena (April 11-12), Paw Paw (April 14-15), Indian Creek (April 25-26) and Hinckley-Big Rock (May 2-3).

“I feel this is a strong group, and I’m looking forward to going out there and competing,” Crackel said.

Norsemen confident for 2016

Newark coach JR Veliz isn’t exactly sure why he thinks his Norsemen are already ahead of schedule compared to last year.

Perhaps it has been the pleasant weather, allowing Newark to get more time on the field. When the weather has been unfavorable, however, the Norsemen have been able to gain access to a new indoor facility – SWING! Baseball and Softball Training Facility in Montgomery. Then again, it could be something as simple as good team chemistry.

“This group here is a family. We are so close,” Veliz said. “There are a lot of freshmen coming in, and seeing how they all work together. They are picking things up, and it’s so good to see already.”

Last year’s team ended up just shy of a .500 season at 13-14 overall and finished 9-7 in the Little Ten Conference.

Junior Steve McGrath is the top returning player after he batted .426 and scored a team-best 46 runs. Three top pitchers are also back – senior Austin Pagel led the Norsemen with four wins (4-4), Aurora University commit Ty Mulligan had a 3.67 ERA and two wins in 21 innings pitched and senior Kendall Endres also

had two wins on the year and recorded a team-high 36 strikeouts.

Senior Kevin Klock and junior Cam Myre are also two returning pitchers that will see time in the rotation. Other returning senior players include Ian Cerney, Jake Putty, Mitch Schmidt and Austin Green. The returning juniors are Conner Christian and Zach Perkins while Austin Wiesbrook and Remington Kempiak are returning sophomores.

Jack Clausel is the lone new senior, Trent Owens is a new sophomore and there are four freshmen expected to play on varsity – Connor Swanson, Billy Gebhart, Jacob Slivka and Corey Jacobson.

McGrath, Clausel, Endres, Schmidt and Myre joined the baseball team about a week and a half after practice officially started on Feb. 29. The five players also play basketball, and their season was extended when the team made it to the supersectional.

“It’s great to be back in baseball,” McGrath said. “I know there is a lot of talent on the team and a lot of good freshmen, so we expect to do some good things this year.”

Thanks to fund-raising, for the first time in program history, Newark will be taking a spring break trip to Jacksonville, where the season will start on Thursday against Hampshire.

Several familiar names on the Yorkville baseball team have graduated, including two Division-I players in Sam Flamini and Kyle Shimp, leaving 10 returning players up for the challenging of mixing with the 14 newcomers on the roster.

“I think we have a very interesting mix [of] some returning starters and a bunch of new guys – a bunch of young guys who we think have a lot of talent,” Yorkville coach Scott Luken said. “We feel very, very confident with the group of young men we have here. They have quickly adapted to what we are doing and have bought it to what we are doing. There’s a lot of athleticism and a lot of baseball knowledge.”

The top returning players include four-year starting pitcher/first baseman Cameron Van Boekel (Honorable Mention All-Conference in the Northern Illinois Big 12, .262 batting average, 26 RBI; six wins on the mound as a starting pitcher), junior catcher/ outfield Max Warren (All-Conference,

The season started on Saturday with an 8-7 loss to Joliet West. For the first time, the Foxes will spend spring break in Union City, Tenn. in the L.H. Ladd Baseball Classic facing teams from Pennsylvania, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas.

The Foxes will not play their first conference series until April 11 against DeKalb. Kaneland won the East Division last year and Yorkville was second. The Foxes finished the season with a 25-12 overall record.

OFFSEASON COMMITMENTS Preseason work helps Foxes jump out to a 3-1 start this spring

The Yorkville softball team was definitely productive in the off-season.

Coach Jory Regnier said her Foxes spent a lot of time in the school’s new and improved weight room, where they not only got stronger, but they bonded as well.

“It’s hard for kids to not want to be in there,” Regnier said. “They committed and pushed themselves as well as each other, and that has brought them all together as a team. All that time they put in really helped them grow. What they did together gave them a lot more respect for one another.”

In Regnier’s first year, the Foxes went 9-22 overall and 0-8 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference.

“Last year, there was a learning process for everyone – for the kids and myself. It was definitely a learning year and a growing year,” Regnier said. “I have a better idea of how I want to run things and do things, so that helps.”

“I feel this year we have a different focus and a different energy,” added senior Bekah Hahn, the lone returning All-Conference player who posted 36 hits and 24 RBIs. “We didn’t have the greatest season last year, so we have that chip on our shoulder. We

The returning juniors are Sydney Woodworth (29 hits, 19 RBIs), Brittany Thomas (11 hits, five RBIs) and pitcher Hannah Jaros (one win). The remaining juniors are all new, including Megan Corneils, Mackenzie Nance, Ally Martin, Hannah Bazan and Cassie Carpenter.

Yorkville (3-1) started its season at the seventh annual Lenz Field Softball Jamboree in Jacksonville. The Foxes lost their first game to Naperville Central (10-0 in five innings), but defeated Marquette Academy (10-8) and Dunlap (6-5).

The first conference contest is at home against Kaneland on April 5. The Foxes will also again be a part of West Aurora’s tournament, which is scheduled for April 15-16.
