Riverfront playground could be installed in fall

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com City of Yorkville officials are hoping to clean up contaminated soil located under a proposed new playground at Riverfront Park, with a goal to have the playground up sometime this fall.

Tim Evans, the city’s parks and recreation director, said the city is working with environmental consultants to come up with a few proposals related to the new playground.

The city received an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant in 2013 for the Riverfront Park playground. The grant was suspended with others in the spring of 2015 by Gov. Bruce Rauner, but was reinstated last September. The OSLAD grant has a listed completion date for the play-

ground of Dec. 31, 2017.

The city had planned a community playground build at Riverfront Park last Oct. 1, but that event was postponed indefinitely when the contamination was discovered.

Although the city has a state grant for the playground, local funds will have to be used to clean up the site, City Administrator Bart Olson said.

Evans said the city is working with the environmental consultants to determine what can be done.

“We’re still working with the environmental consultants to figure out the game plan or resolution to solve the contaminated soil down there,” he said.

“Once we get that figured out, we’re hoping to have that all solved by the beginning of summer and then at a minimum we’re hoping to put the playground back

in in the fall.”

Evans said if the soil is removed, the plan would be to place concrete or asphalt down before putting the clean soil on top. There is a retaining wall built where the playground would be built on the east side of the park.

The playground could be built in another area of the park, but that would be a City Council decision, Evans said.

For now, the city is trying to complete the Bristol Bay Park, Evans said. The city received an OSLAD grant for that park project in 2014, and the grant includes a completion date of June 30, 2018.

“We’re trying to get that one done, because that has to be done by next June, in 2018, and we really don’t want to have to ask for another extension on that,” he said. “We’d rather ask for an extension on the Riverfront one.”

Money raised by the sale goes directly to support the library. The Friends of the Yorkville Library is a volunteer group of individuals focused on supporting and promoting the services and programs of the library. The Friends meet the second

What differentiates you from the other candidates running for board seats?

I feel I can bring a logical approach as to how public tax dollars are spent and make sure they are spent wisely. I am a firm believer in the need for political positions to have term limits because there needs to continue to be a fresh perspective. I believe I can take what I have learned from being a business owner for the last 17 years and apply it to this position.

My family comes from a Kendall County farming background. We have continually owned property in the county since 1868. I went to the last one room country school in the county, then Plattville Grade School, and then graduated from Yorkville High School in 1967. My point is, this is home and I want to make sure that it is well taken care of.

I have longevity as a trustee on the board and believe this experience along with going to various educational conferences hosted by Township Officials of Illinois are advantages.

Life-long citizen. I know a lot of the history of the township. I know all the roads in the township.

To follow the Illinois Constitutional convention of 1970 as one of four auditors of county bills to see that they are part of the approved budget.

Maintain the roads of the township, and keep township taxes in line.

If elected, what would be your top priority as a board member?

I think one of the most important things our township is lacking is the ability for our community to see where their tax dollars are being spent, how they are being taxed, the ability to see how their Board is operating via meeting minutes, and when the meeting dates and times are. In order for us to accomplish these goals a website would need to be created for public transparency.

To continue attending township educational seminars and make sure that the township is being governed at the most current State guidelines and code standards.

To maintain and monitor the financial stability of the township and to expand and enhance the transparency within the township.

What project or projects would you like to see the township government accomplish over the next four years?

I would like Kendall Township to participate in the 2017 Illinois Township Day this coming September, so that the people of Kendall Township could meet their elected officials and view the township facility and equipment used to maintain 15 subdivisions and 50 miles of road.

Last year was the first year that Township Officials of Illinois designated a fall day to be the First Annual Townships of Illinois Day and I feel that Kendall Township should start using the designated day as a way of inviting all individuals living within the township to come to the township building to ask questions, explore the township building, examine equipment and bring in the children to introduce them to township government.

To continue maintaining the township roads in both summer and prompt snow plow in winter.

Finish getting all township records on the computer and keep the township roads in good shape.

Would you support the consolidation of township government with either local municipalities or Kendall County? Please explain.

Yes, I would support it if it was going to save tax payers money as long as there wasn’t any loss of services.­­

Not for Kendall Township. By law, Illinois townships are charged with three basic functions: 1) general assistance 2) the assessment of real property for the purpose of taxation; and 3) maintenance of all roads and bridges outside federal, state, and other local jurisdiction managed by the Twp. Highway Commission. If these functions where removed from the control of the township, additional personnel would be needed by the government agencies charged with these additional functions.

Not at this time. Kendall Township is still predominantly rural and I feel there is a need for township government to have that direct contact with the electors, and have a check and balance of township finances. I know the township can be more efficient and responsive than a larger body of government where the electors must go through a series of bureaucratic steps to get answers to their questions.

No. The county assessor would have to hire 11 new union employees and the superintendent of highways would have to hire a minimum of 10 new union truck and operating engineers.

How could that save money???

No. The township board knows its township. The rural area and unincorporated subdivisions are best served by the township. I don’t feel there would be any tax savings at this time.

As the township grows or loses its rural base it would be time to look at it.

Special census helps city gets share of state funds As we reported this past week, the City of Yorkville received notice from the U.S. Census Bureau that a previously planned special census will in fact be conducted in the city either late this spring or in early summer. The city council had approved the special census for selected areas of the city last October in an effort to assure that it is receiving all of the state-reimbursed per capita (per person) revenue to

which it is entitled. However, due to a federal hiring freeze imposed by the Trump Administration, city officials were concerned that the Census Bureau would be unable to complete the special census.

But Mayor Gary Golinski told the city council March 14 that the hiring freeze will not affect the special census and it will proceed as planned.

The state reimburses the city $150 per resident each year as the city’s

share of income, use (sales) and motor fuel tax revenues, based on the results of the national census taken every 10 years.

Currently, the payments are calculated based on the 2010 census which placed the city’s population at 16,921. However, city officials believe that 1,280 new residents have moved into the city since 2010 and estimate that the city could gain approximately $600,000 over the next

three years in additional state-reimbursed revenues.

City officials should be commended for seeking to have the special census completed to assure that the city is receiving the maximum amount of state-reimbursed revenues to which it is legally entitled.

We’re certain that Yorkville taxpayers want the state to reimburse the city for the full amount of MFT and other tax revenues it is owed.

Lucy Hayes had some firsts as the First Lady Since the equinox was Monday, are you in a happier mood now that it’s officially spring?

Generally, spring in Illinois is pretty much the same as winter but wetter. In fact, these March days when it’s 38 degrees and raining with a 20 mph wind blowing out of the northwest make one positively wish winter had not segued into what is purported to be a completely different season. Of course, we could look back on those balmy days of February if we get lonesome for warm weather, I suppose.

But now that it is actually spring, we can do all sorts of things. We can watch the days get progressively longer, rejoice that it’s not completely dark when we get up every morning, and watch spring bulbs turn into daffodils and other hardy flowers that mark the turn of the seasons.

And, of course, we can continue heading out front to the mailbox to see what someone felt was important enough to put a stamp or a postage meter mark on and entrust to the U.S. Postal Service.

We have noted lately that a significant portion of what we receive each day does not meet the criteria of “serious” mail. Loads of contest offers, catalogs of varying interest and entertainment, missives from politicians entreating us about this and that, and fundraising notes from Indian reservations and wildlife organizations too numerous to mention have turned up.

Fortunately, we have also received junk mail of real substance, which, before we chucked it into the recycling bin, informed us of the following news we’re sure we can all use:

Downtown Oswego developer chosen Multi-story, mixed-use project with parking deck planned for former lumberyard OSWEGO LEDGER Oswego Village President Gail Johnson and the village board of trustees have announced the selection of Shodeen Group LLC as the developer for the former Alexander Lumberyard site in the village’s downtown.

The village board voted 6-0 Tuesday evening to approve a purchase and sale agreement with Shodeen for the property. The agreement authorizes Shodeen to pursue development approval for the site through the village’s public review process.

According to a statement released by the village, Shodeen plans to develop The Reserve at Hudson Crossing, a multi-story, mixed-use development on the site, including residential units, a public parking deck, and commercial space on Washington Street. The development is expected to include the reconstruction of Jackson and Adams streets and public amenities to the streets and walkways adjacent to the development.

The village will prioritize attract-

ing restaurants to the development, according to the statement.

“Revitalization of downtown Oswego is one of our top priorities. In two short years, we approved our first TIF district and have now selected the developer that will finally end a decade of stagnation at the Alexander Lumber property,” said Johnson. “We are thrilled to be working with a prominent, experienced developer. Shodeen started in the Fox Valley and has completed successful projects in Geneva and St. Charles, to name a few, and now they have chosen to bring that expertise to Oswego’s downtown.”

Based in Geneva, Shodeen has been in the residential and commercial development and construction business for over 50 years. Under terms of the purchase agreement, Shodeen will have nine months to receive approval from the board for the development plan, preceded by a public hearing with the plan commission, and redevelopment agreement (RDA) approval from the Village Board.

The RDA will establish the devel-

opment conditions, including village incentives such as the use of TIF increment revenues to help finance the project.

Recognizing that impediments exist to private sector development in the downtown, the board approved a TIF district last September as a financing vehicle to activate reinvestment in the downtown.

In December, the board purchased 59 S. Adams St. in order to accelerate, and ultimately control, the development of the property at a cost of $1,492,500. In January, village staff solicited proposals from several area developers. The selection team recommended Shodeen Group LLC as the preferred developer.

The village’s 2015 Comprehensive Plan envisions a transformative development at 59 S. Adams St. that will bring restaurants, retail, public parking, and new residential units to downtown Oswego.

The Alexander Lumberyard closed in 2006 and there has not been a formal development proposal for the site since 2010.

County to provide economic development cash to cities

The Kendall County Board voted 5-4 Tuesday morning to allow the county to loan local governments – including the county – money through its economic development revolving loan funds.

Board Chairman Scott Gryder, Economic Development Chairman Audra Hendrix, and board members Matt Kellogg, Matt Prochaska and Elizabeth Flowers voted in favor of the measure, while board members Judy Gilmour, Robert Davidson, Lynn Cullick and John Purcell voted against it. Board member Tony Giles was not present at Tuesday’s meeting.

Those voting against the measure said they didn’t know the parameters of the loans to governments before voting on the measure.

However, Hendrix, who brought the measure to the board, argued that the measure only opened up the county to lending money to those government entities. She said rules are already in place for businesses wishing to get a loan from the county, and that any loan would have to be approved by the County Board.

Hendrix said when the county received its first money from the state for economic development loans in the 1980s, the money came with restrictions, one of which was that it could not be lent to local governments. The state has since rescinded those restrictions, she said.

“This is basically reverting back to the way we were doing it before” 1988, when the state gave the county the funds, Hendrix said.

Hendrix said that the county had recently been approached by a local government – the Village of Oswego – whose revolving loan fund was depleted

because of successful economic development projects.

Oswego Village Administrator Daniel Di Santo, who attended Tuesday’s meeting, confirmed later that the village had been approached by businesses asking for an economic development loan from the village.

“We’re thrilled with the decision that the county is willing to lend to municipalities,” Di Santo said. “Oswego has had great success with the revolving loan program. Every one we’ve had has been successful, we have many in play now. That’s also the reason we’re here, because we’ve lent out all the money; there’s not much left to lend. We do have a few projects that have expressed interest in additional loans, and since we didn’t have any, we directed them to the county. That’s when we learned that the county was interested in lending directly to municipalities to reduce their risk.”

During a discussion on the measure, Davidson said there should be a limit set as to how much money the county would loan a municipality. However, Kellogg said the measure being voted on would just change the language of the county’s revolving loan policy to allow such loans, and that the county could “hash out those details” if a local government approaches them about a loan.

Kellogg also said the measure would allow the county to access the funds in case of an emergency.

“This frees up the money so we can manage it more properly,” Kellogg said.

Hendrix said there are projects that could go forward but that their respective municipalities or other local governments have depleted revolving loan funds. She referred to a loan from the county to a hotel complex in Sandwich in which the county only recovered 10 percent of its original $750,000 loan.

Yorkville police cited Shakira Gaines, 18, of the 1000 block of Marketplace Drive, Yorkville, for operating an uninsured vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident following a rear-end crash March 18 with another vehicle at the intersection of Route 34 and Autumn Creek Drive.

County sheriff’s deputies arrested Melissa Fae Lewis, 39, of the 700 block of Suzanne Street, Sandwich, after stopping her vehicle for speeding 75 mph in a 55 mph zone on Galena Road at Jones Road in Little Rock Township March 20 at 8:34 a.m. Police said Lewis has been charged with driving on a suspended license.

Property damage reported

County sheriff’s deputies took a report of criminal damage to property at a residence in the 1000 block of West Jones Street in Little Rock Township March 20. Police said someone broke out the window to a garage at the residence.

Motorist cited in crash

A Bristol resident, Adam Wayne Howard, 31, of the 9000 block of Corneils Road, was transported to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora for evaluation after the vehicle he was driving went off Galena Road east of Highland Road

in Bristol Township March 18 at 5:09 p.m. and struck a mailbox and a cable TV box, according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said Howard was cited for driving without insurance and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Police said Anderson faces charges of driving under the influence and driving while license revoked. In addition, he was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Big Grove Township officials told county sheriff’s deputies March 13 that three road signs in the vicinity of Whitewillow Road and Town Road appeared to have been damaged by projectiles from a firearm.

Juveniles arrested

County sheriff’s deputies arrested two female juveniles after stopping their vehicle for an equipment violation on Route 126 at Schlapp Road in NaAuSay Township March 18. Police said a juvenile driver of the vehicle was found to not have a driver’s license and in possession of alcohol. The juvenile passenger was also found to be in possession of alcohol. Both suspects were transported to the County Jail in Yorkville and were later released to guardians.

A resident of Meyer Road in Oswego Township told county sheriff’s deputies March 19 that someone had stolen her purse. Police said they are investigating.

County sheriff’s deputies responded to a verbal domestic situation that occurred in the 0-100 block of Chatham Place in Boulder Hill March 15 at 11:40 p.m. Police said deputies learned that a male at the residence had broken items in the home that belonged to other family members. Police said the family members refused to sign complaints for the damaged property.

• County sheriff’s deputies arrested Michael Edward Alcala, 18, no address, in the 0-700 block of West Veterans Parkway, Yorkville, March 15 at 3:54 p.m. on a warrant for aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Police said the suspect was transported to the County Jail without incident. Police said the suspect also faces a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

• County sheriff’s deputies arrested Phillip M. Chandler, 21, of the 100 block of Colonial Parkway, Yorkville, at his residence March 15 at 1:53 p.m. on a Kendall County warrant for sexual exploitation of a child.

• County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Jason E. Dodson, 42, of the 90th block of Ashlawn Avenue, Oswego, at his residence March 15 at 11:30 a.m. on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of retail theft. Police said the suspect was transported to the County Jail in Yorkville pending court proceedings.

Kevin John Ode, 39, of the 100 block of Linden Drive, Oswego, March 16 at 4 a.m. in the 2000 block of Ogden Avenue in Bristol Township. Police said the suspect was taken into custody on a Kendall County warrant for failure to appear in court on a prior charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police said the suspect was transported to the County Jail without incident for booking and bonding.

ID theft proves costly

A resident of Miller Road in Little Rock Township told county sheriff’s deputies that someone used his personal information to secure a $770 loan on the internet. Police said they are investigating.

Bail bond violation

County sheriff’s deputies arrested Michael Christian Duvall, 41, of the 40Th block of Afton Road, Boulder Hill, while responding to a report of domestic trouble at his residence March 13 at 5:08 a.m. Police said they arrested Duvall on a charge of violation of his bail bond.

Two juveniles injured

County sheriff’s deputies reported that two female juveniles were injured in a single vehicle crash at Walker and Arbeiter roads in NaAuSay Township March 14 at 4:58 p.m. Police said Plainfield Fire Protection District paramedics transported the juveniles from the scene, while Illinois State Police assisted with the crash investigation.

Damage reported

Someone caused an estimated $500 in damage to a gate at a business in the 15000 block of North Ridge Road in Seward Township sometime between March 15 and March 17.

School district to host Vision Update If you go

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com In an effort to heighten transparency and get stakeholders involved in the educational process, the Yorkville School District is inviting students, residents, taxpayers and business owners to attend the district’s Vision Update event, held in April.

It will feature entertainment, giveaways, an information fair, and a State of the District address given by Superintendent Dr. Timothy Shimp. This is the first year the district is putting together an event of such caliber, district spokesperson Kristine Liptrot said.

“If your tax dollars are going to the school district, or you’re an employee here, this is one hour annually to get the information you need to understand the direction of the district,” she said. “We understand the limitations on people’s time. Not everyone can get to a board meeting or keep up-to-date on social media. But, hopefully everyone has an hour out of the year to find out how the majority of their tax dollars are being spent.”

The event will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

Last year, parents, teachers and residents were surveyed about what they feel should be the district’s priorities.

Transparency and communication were two topics that came up often, Liptrot noted.

“The initiative is to hold the State of the District address and to hold us accountable,” Liptrot said. “We want to let people know in a timely and transparent matter how we are following through with their wishes (and the

strategic plans).”

Shimp will touch on topics ranging from student success to operational excellence, home and community partnerships, and the learning community.

Following the presentation, an information fair will take place to allow parents and stakeholders to get any unanswered questions out on the table.

Representatives from the district’s food and transportation vendors will be on hand, as well as student services, fine arts and athletic departments, and district technology experts.

The district is hoping to live stream Shimp’s address and have the video available for residents to watch at their convenience. Participants will be treated to musical and theatrical entertainment from local students, as well as learn about the district’s current endeavors.

“We don’t want the event to just be people sitting, getting information and having no way to react,” Liptrot said.

“We wanted to make this more of an event than just a State of the District address.”

Participants will be awarded raffle tickets for attending, and can win prizes ranging from classroom visits by the Yorkville mascot, reserved parking at the high school, and season tickets to district sporting events.

bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – About 100 people gathered outside the Campton Hills district office of U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, on March 16 to ask the congressman to resist President Donald Trump’s proposed deep cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Among them was Jeanne Neltnor of Geneva, carrying a sign with a picture of the earth and the words, “Protect what you love.”

“I’m here because we can’t live without clean air and clean water,” Neltnor said. “And to destroy the EPA – it’s going to destroy humankind. I want him to vote against these cuts.

Say no and stand up to Trump and his cronies.”

Candida Kyle of Elgin also carried a sign with a picture of the earth – only her message was, “There is no planet B.” “If we do not have clean water, if we do not have clean air, if our food is not inspected, then what else is

there?” Kyle asked. “We will not be able to survive these next four years.

We need clean water; we need clean air. We need protected food. … I don’t want him to dismantle the EPA. We need environmental protection.”

Kyle said years ago, the Fox River was polluted and people worked for years to clean it up.

“In a very short time, that can all come back,” Kyle said. “We cannot have that. I want him to vote against the dismantling of the EPA.” Sugar Grove resident Tabitha Elzer, with her 9-month-old daughter Maxine, said she joined the group because she wants a safe environment for her daughter to grow up in.

“I want to prevent budget cuts for the EPA,” Elzer said. “It should be about the good of the people, not just money.”

As during recent protests at Hultgren’s office from Indivisible Fox Valley and other groups, those driving by honked and waved their support.

First St. Patrick’s Fest brings out Irish smiles KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Yorkville and area residents of all ages enjoyed a St. Patrick’s festival in the city’s downtown Saturday. Organized by Tim Gleason of Yorkville, the first-of-its-kind fest featured a 5K run, a hunt for a leprechaun’s gold, plenty of food and beverages at downtown restaurants and lots of live music, including a performance by the Gleeson Irish Trio, featuring Frank Loria.

Gleason said he sought to organize the fest to help promote the downtown businesses and provide a family-oriented day of fun for all ages.

In an email, Hultgren did not respond to constituent concerns about cuts to the EPA. Instead, Hultgren’s email stated the president submitted his budget request for the American people to see where his budget priorities lie.

“As we continue to write the budget and follow through with the appropriations process, members will have their chance to weigh-in on the priorities that matter for our constituents,” Hultgren stated.

The event also included six speakers, who all spoke with a bullhorn to be heard above the wind and traffic.

Sugar Grove resident Amanda Tracy of Food & Water Watch, said a clean environment shouldn’t be a partisan issue.

“We know the protections that the EPA offers … are intended to protect everybody’s well-being,” Tracy said.

“We want Randy Hultgren to stand up for our environmental protections.”

Reed Scherer, professor of micropaleontology and biostratigraphy at NIU in DeKalb, said “climate change is a reality.”

“Scientists are skeptical by nature,” he said. “That is what we are trained to do. We do not embrace a con-

clusion before we have any evidence to prove it.”

Scherer criticized EPA Director Scott Pruitt and Trump for making policy decisions about the EPA that are not based on scientific evidence.

Scherer said a proposed 31 percent cut to the EPA and the elimination of NASA’s climate change research would impact the fundamental data on climate change that scientists rely on.

“Randy Hultgren is not a dumb man. He speaks with knowledge of science,” Scherer said. “Yet, he votes in lock-step with his party. The reason I am here today is, if you believe in science, act on your belief and vote.”

Jeff Mengler, president of the Fox River Ecosystem Partnership, said the EPA’s leadership has been essential to the environmental progress of the last decade.

“I have spent a career repairing environmental degradation,” Mengler said. “I am acutely aware of the need for these protections on a local level.”

Mavis Bates, adjunct professor of sustainability at Waubonsee Community College, said she came to environmental awareness after witnessing an atomic blast when she was 12 and living in Hawaii.

“I was, and still am, filled with a sense of urgency, an awareness of the fragility of this planet,” Bates said.

Norsemen look to extend success to the diamond

Days off are apparently not in the Newark DNA. Two days after the Norsemen took fourth place in Class 1A boys basketball, eight Newark basketball players traded in their gym shoes for spikes.

Newark baseball coach JR Veliz likes the vibe they’ve carried over.

“I gave them the option to take a couple days off and they were like ‘Nope, not happening,’” Veliz said. “I wasn’t surprised, to be honest. They’re bringing that positive energy from basketball to baseball.”

Steve McGrath, a starter on the Newark basketball team, leads the returnees back from a baseball team that went 15-10 last spring.

McGrath, a four-year starter, hit .345 with 18 runs batted in as a junior, and was 21-for-21 on stolen bases with a .430 on-base percentage.

He’ll play shortstop and is slated to bat leadoff.

“His work ethic is amazing,” Veliz said. “He carries himself in a way that’s not cocky, and he’s got great speed and baseball smarts. The younger guys look up to him.”

McGrath, though, is really the only Norseman on this team who has played consistently at the varsity level. Newark graduated six starters, and most of its pitching.

Corey Jacobson and Jacob Slivka, two members of a talented sophomore class, got 32 and 44 varsity at-bats, respectively, last year.

“I’m really calling it the year of the unknown,” Veliz said. “The sophomore class has amazing athletic ability. If we can put that on the field we’ll have success.”

Senior Connor Christian, 4-0 with a 2.1 earned run average in 30 innings last year, moves up to be Newark’s No. 1.

“The big games will be his now,” Veliz said.

Cameron Myre missed most of last baseball season, but Veliz expects big things from the 6-foot-7 senior.

“His energy on the baseball field is awesome,” Veliz said. “I was hoping to get him in the rotation by mid-April and he said ‘Coach, I’ll be ready.’”

Four newcomers from various backgrounds could be big contributors.

Sophomores Billy Gebhart and Connor Swanson, state track qualifiers last year, will do double duty this spring. Senior Ryan Rayburn, a transfer from Ottawa Marquette, could pitch, play second base and outfield.

And All-State basketball player Will Clausel is playing baseball for the first time in high school.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Veliz said, “but he’s looking good.”

Veliz thinks expectations might have tightened up last year’s team, but this group looks loose. The Norsemen will get started this weekend with three games in Jacksonville.

“I feel like our defense will be better, it looks sharp. The offense will come,” Veliz said. “There is a sense of looseness around this team.”

Plano’s Unified team takes second at state

This school year, Cline was part of an athletic experience that goes beyond the court and field.

Cline, a Plano sophomore, was part of Plano’s first-ever Special Education Unified basketball team. The program partners general-education students like Cline with special-education kids.

“It’s breaking down barriers through athletics, getting all the kids in the community to come together and ignore their differences,” said Will Brown, head coach of Plano’s Unified team.

They made quite a memory in the process.

Plano’s Unified team took second place to Thornton in the IHSA’s first-ever Special Olympics Unified State Championship this past weekend in Peoria.

For their efforts, the team of DeJuwan Howard, Ohagie Watkins, Connor Orin, Richard LaCoco, Joey Oidtman, Dalton Cline, Jason Jimenez, Ernesto Rosales, Art Padilla and Robert Luckey are the Record Athletes of the Week.

“It was fun meeting new people,” Cline said. “I actually liked it. To be honest, I didn’t know if it would be fun but I actually loved it. They were fun to play with.”

Unified sports have been going on in other states, but it was new this year to Illinois.

Four out of the five general-education players in Plano’s program also played for Brown in the Reapers’ football program.

Plano held two practices a week, and played five regular-season games.

The connection didn’t stop there.

Brown said the general-education kids now stop by his classroom all the time to say hi to their teammates.

“It was an amazing experience, something I’ll never forget,” Brown said. “Realistically, in the world in general, people put that wall up. It was special to see these kids not even pay attention to that, to work really well together and become such a good team.”

Cline didn’t think his special-education teammates would be as talented as

they were on the court.

“I talk to them a lot more now,” he said. “They’re fun, they’re goofy. Sometimes they can be annoying but it’s OK. I love to play around with them.”

Plano won its regional at Metea Valley, beating the host school. Eight teams total advanced to state, grouped in two four-team brackets by their finish at regionals.

Plano beat Princeton in the semifinals to advance to the final against Thornton. The state tournament was played at the March Madness Experience inside the exhibition hall at the Peoria Civic Center, outside of Carver Arena.

“Just having the opportunity to take them down to state and play in a championship bracket, and play for a state

championship, there was nothing like it,” Brown said. “It was pretty sweet.”

Winning the regional, and going to state, has spread awareness of the program around school. Students from both Plano and Yorkville participated on the Unified team, but they are all students at Plano High School.

The IHSA is also offering Unified soccer this spring.

“Everybody’s realizing now that this is an IHSA event. I’ve had kids come up to me asking me to join the team next year,” Brown said. “The word has spread quickly. That’s the best thing is seeing more people want to get involved with it. This will hopefully help them get involved with special-education kids and we can keep growing from here.”

Future looks bright for Yorkville, which went 12-8-2 last year

She assisted the last four years, and now takes over both the boys and girls programs.

She’s never quite seen this kind of speed, though.

Between boys and girls, Yorkville has close to 150 out for track, a few more on the boys side. The program could be taking several of its athletes to the Top Times Indoor Championships this weekend at Illinois Wesleyan.

“For our program, it’s exciting,” Vriezen said. “We’re never really had too much depth with the guys sprints.

It’s been really fun. Not completely new, but a slightly new experience.”

Torok, who will run the 100 and 200 along with the sprint relays, is making his mark already.

He broke the school record in the indoor 200 at Sterling, winning the race in 23.11 seconds. Torok, Javell Moore, Logan Sudduth and Peyton Frankenreider have already broken the program’s 800-meter relay record twice this indoor season. They went 1:33.42 for second place at conference.

“Jackson has put up some pretty incredible times,”

Vriezen said. “He’s showing some really good leadership.”

Yorkville didn’t have its whole distance squad at conference, but that didn’t stop junior Zack Price. He won the 1,600 in 4:43.24, and could be another going to Top Times.

“Zack has put in a lot of hard work training during the winter,” Vriezen said.

“It’s nice to get some positive results from that. We should have some pretty strong distance guys again.”

In the field events, Frankenreider set a new indoor program record in the triple jump at Sterling, going 43,

feet, 7.75 inches. David Frazier threw the shot put 46-11 at conference.

“Seeing how far Payton has improved, we’re pretty excited at what can happen outdoors,” Vriezen said.

The Foxes head outdoors April 4 with a dual meet at DeKalb, and follow that by going to the Niles West Invitational April 8. They’ll host their own Matt Wulf Invite April 13.

“We have quite a few freshmen who have come out for track, and a few sophomores come out who are doing well,” Vriezen said. “It’s exciting.”

When you only lose one senior from a winning team, there’s reason to be excited about the upcoming season.

When one of your returnees is only a junior, but has already scored 51 goals, you have reason to be beyond thrilled.

Perhaps the only disappointing news for the Yorkville girls soccer team this spring is that the Foxes lost Lupe Anguiano due to a preseason injury.

Regardless, there’s a lot of optimism in Yorkville, which made a huge stride last year in coach Lauren Anderson’s first season.

The Foxes bounced back from an 8-11-2 and winless conference season in 2015 to post a 12-8-2 mark, 3-4-1 in conference.

“Last year we were starting five or six freshmen a lot of the time,” Anderson said. “So we were young, but we started building the program in the right direction. It may be a little thing but we have two teams again this year where in the past we only had one. Last year we beat DeKalb and Morris for the first time, and the year before we didn’t win a single conference game.”

Willie, who is verbally committed to Illinois.

“She’s simply an incredible player with a lot of speed and now all the schools know about her,” Anderson said. “After her freshman year they started to double team her, but with her speed, she still was a difference maker. Her speed is one-of-a-kind. And if teams want to double team her, it opens up another player and we’ve got some strong players around her and should be able to execute off that.”

One of those players is freshman midfielder Madison Grandys.

“Madison is going to be something special,” Anderson said. “She has a lot of talent and is going to make an impact as a freshman, which is exciting since we’ll have her for four years. She has great vision of the field, great endurance and is the whole package.”

Grandys’ ability to connect with Willie from the midfield will be huge.

Having sophomore Katie Straznickas (six goals, four assists last season) to anchor the backline is also a strength.

Anderson sets the bar high Yorkville senior has state medal in hand, eyes scholarship at Louisiana Tech

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com When Sydney Anderson jumps these days, it’s with one eye on her future.

Maybe both.

The Yorkville senior took seventh in the Class 3A high jump last spring, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. She made 5-5 in her first indoor meet this year at North Central College, and again at Sycamore.

She’s not exactly satisfied, for good reason.

Anderson plans to attend Louisiana Tech next year to study computer science. Right now, she plans to walk on for the school’s track team. If she clears 5-8, though, she’s been promised a half-scholarship.

“We have family down there, we visited LSU and Louisiana Tech. It was a medium-sized school, plus it never snows,” Anderson said. “I know they’re D-I and their high jumpers are really good.”

Anderson leads a Foxes’ team with big aspirations on the track this spring.

Yorkville is coming off a second-place finish to DeKalb at the Northern Illinois Big 12 indoor conference meet at Sterling last Saturday. The next stop for many of the Foxes is likely the Top Times indoor state championships this weekend at Illinois Wesleyan.

First-year Yorkville head coach Lauren Vriezen doesn’t need reminding that she has a stellar high jumper. Vriezen was assistant coach the last four years.

“Aside from her body type, and long legs, Sydney has that spring,” Vriezen said. “She’s worked really hard to tweak that form. She’s really finetuned her approach, making sure she is looking up and over the bar instead of just jumping into it.”

As usual, Yorkville should be loaded in the distance events.

cross-country, were slowed by minor injuries during indoor season but Vriezen is optimistic they’ll be fine for outdoors.

Seniors Stephanie Schlichting and Mischara Palmer should score well in the triple jump and sprint relays. One to watch is freshman Rachel Hunter. A standout in middle school, Hunter has already run a 1:01 400 and set an indoor 200 school record of 26.83.

“She’s also a good long jumper and hurdler,” Vriezen said. “I’m excited to see where she can find her niche.”

Anderson found her niche in the high jump early on.

She followed her sister Sierra into it in middle school.

She wasn’t an instant success,

though.

“I was really bad,” Anderson said. “I wasn’t going to do it freshman year, but it seemed fun.”

Anderson was stuck around 4-8 or 4-10 most of freshman year, but had a breakthrough at sectionals jumping 5-1. That same year, Yorkville junior Rachel Augius took third in the high jump at state. Augius was fourth in 2015, and Anderson joined her in the Class 3A finals.

“I was really motivated.

My coach bribed me with gummy worms and I was like, ‘I’ll do it,’” Anderson said.

“After freshman year all I did was practice all the time. I practiced every day as much as I could.”

Since Yorkville doesn’t have an indoor facility, Anderson is resourceful. She trains at Jump High Athletic Club at Lewis University.

“For me, high jumping is all mental,” Anderson said.

“Sometimes if I get really frustrated that I can’t clear a height I just breathe and focus.”
