City Administrator Bart Olson said that the census process would start in late spring or early summer.

anticipated revenue if the special census is not completed. There have been an estimated 1,280 new residents who have moved into Yorkville since the 2010 regular census, according to city officials.

The city receives $150 a year per resident in tax disbursements for income tax, use tax and motor fuel tax, according to city officials. The city anticipates it could gain more than $600,000 in additional revenue between now and the next census with this newly updated census.

The last day to cast an early ballot at the clerk’s office will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Voting hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m. daily, with the exception of Saturday, March 25, when early voting will be offered from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Early voting will not be available on Sunday, March 26, at Plano City Hall.

Yorkville Big Band dance set for this Sunday

The 21-piece Yorkville Big Band is hosting its monthly dance Sunday at the Yorkville American Legion Post 489, 9054 E. Veterans Parkway in Yorkville.

The band performs at the Legion on the third Sunday of every month, September through May. A dance lesson runs from 6 to 7 p.m. and the dance is from 7 to 9 p.m., and is open to the public.

Why are you seeking a seat on the Yorkville City Council?

It has been my privilege to serve the citizens as Ward 1 Alderman for the past 5 years. I am seeking re-election to ensure that their voices are heard and concerns addressed. My focus is responsible finances, tax reduction and dramatic growth in the residential, commercial, & industrial sectors.

As a business manager in downtown who lives above the shop, I eat, sleep, and breathe Yorkville. Leadership, experience, passion for public service, a commitment to transparency and a genuine approach to communication.

I am a respected and tireless leader when it comes to advocacy on the City Council on behalf of our citizens.

I believe a promise made is a promise kept. I promote open Government and less Government when possible.

I love and adore Yorkville. A primary point of distinction between myself and my opponents is that I both live and work in downtown Yorkville. My next door neighbors are the shops, parks, bars, and restaurants that give Yorkville its unique culture. My business is one of them. I can’t help but feel that my personal success or failure and the City of Yorkville’s success or failure, very much rely on each other.

What you’re getting with me is a tenacious advocate of all things Yorkville.

If elected, what would be your top priority as alderman?

That the residents of Yorkville Ward 1 are aware of the resources available to them and that we remain fiscally responsible, as we meet the needs of our community.

Encourage business and commercial growth, add jobs, and maintain our infrastructure, keeping taxes and finances in line.

My top priority is already and, once elected, will continue to be championing Yorkville. This is such a great town with so many fantastic and unique amenities that it really sells itself once folks get here to look around. If you’ve looked at your tax bill then you know it’s not cheap to build a town like we have. By enticing outsiders to come share in our wonderful community and enjoy our setting, we’re spreading the tax burden out to make the pill a little easier for us all to swallow.

The Yorkville City Council will see some changes no matter who wins April 4, with incumbent Ward 4 Alderman Diane Teeling deciding not to run and Larry Kot stepping down as alderman for Ward 2 at the end of last year.

Alejandro Hernandez is running unopposed for Teeling’s seat in Ward 4, and Kot’s vacant seat has resulted in a a three-way race in Ward 2 between former Alderman Arden Plocher, Park Board President Deborah Horaz, and Robert J. Gryder.

Safety shoulders will improve access to Silver Springs When it comes to roads in Kendall County it isn’t nor should it be all about motor vehicles. That’s why County Engineer Fran Klaas should be commended for seeing to it that four-foot-wide safety shoulders will be added to Fox Road between Yorkville and Plano as part of a $1.5 million maintenance project set for the road this summer.

According to Klaas, the project will include resurfacing the road between the Fox Lawn subdivision at Poplar Drive west, past Silver Springs State Park, to Fox River Drive and the

installation of those four-foot-wide safety shoulders.

Klaas correctly noted that in addition to the motor vehicles, many cyclists, walkers and runners use Fox River Drive from Yorkville to reach Silver Springs. Installation of the safety shoulders should make it safer for those non-motorists using the road and make it easier for motorists to pass them.

Ultimately, one day we would like to see a trail extended to reach Silver Springs, one of Kendall County’s most important recreational and natural

area assets. But that day is likely decades away – if it ever happens. The addition of the safety shoulders will, in effect, help bring Silver Springs a tad closer to Yorkville and its growing population of cyclists, runners and walkers.

And while we’re on the topic of trails here, we want to remind our readers that the Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department and Yorkville’s Rosati’s Pizza and Pub are once again combining to host the PeppeRUNi 5K at 8 a.m. Saturday, May, 13 from Rosati’s on North Bridge

Street (Route 47). As in past years, proceeds will go to Push for the Path, a nonprofit organization that continues to raise funds for the construction of a 2.72-mile multi-use path along Kennedy Road. When completed, the path will provide a safe passageway for walkers, runners and cyclists to access the growing trail network in Oswego, Montgomery and the rest of the Fox Valley area. March offers evidence of dawn of spring on the prairie For our pioneer ancestors, March finally offered the first real evidence of spring on the prairie.

As the days slowly lengthened, the additional daylight was welcomed after our Native American and white pioneer forebears managed to get through the deep winter months of January and, especially, February.

While snow was still frequent, the amounts were far less (at least in general; the occasional March blizzard still blew up out of the northwest) than in the preceding two months, and what snow did fall tended to melt much faster than it did weeks before.

Some Native American traditions named March’s full moon the Worm Moon. Others called it the Crow Moon, while others referred to it as the Sugar Moon. Each of those names is descriptive of an important part of Native American life.

The Worm Moon refers to those longer days and sun-thawed ground, with the occasional warm night that persuade earthworms to crawl out of their burrows for the first time. Even Native Americans used nightcrawlers and red worms for bait on the fishhooks they received in trade. And I suppose their ancestors used them on the bone hooks they fashioned in the centuries before white fur traders arrived as well.

Also in March, crows are noisily busy foraging among the unlucky animals that failed to live through the long winter. The retreating snow cover annually reveals this bit of spring bounty for the noisy and surprisingly intelligent birds, as well as the other scavengers who make up Mother Nature’s cleanup crew. A gregarious and

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile social bunch, crows are not easy to dismiss, and their noisy congregations during this early season before true spring arrives undoubtedly gave the month’s full moon its alternate name.

And finally, the Sugar Moon name is a reflection of another of Mother Nature’s annual gifts, the rising of maple tree sap. Clear, watery, and nearly tasteless, maple sap can nonetheless be processed into about the only sweet that existed before Europeans arrived in North America. For it was the Europeans who brought the industrious honeybee to these shores.

But in those pre-honeybee days – and forever after – March’s maple sap was collected and boiled down to create the maple syrup and maple sugar treats so valued by the indigenous people of North America and then by the Europeans who supplanted them.

Since maple sap is only about 2 percent sugar, it takes a lot of it – 40 or 50 gallons – to boil down into a gallon of syrup or eight pounds of sugar.

It also takes a lot of firewood to boil the sap down over fires carefully tended and kept burning 24 hours a day.

In the pre-fur trade era, boiling was done in bark or hollowed wood vessels by placing rocks that had been heated red hot in fires into the sap. After the arrival of European fur traders, iron and brass kettles became available that could be heated directly over fires.

This 19th-century illustration shows Native Americans collecting and boiling maple sap to create maple syrup and maple sugar treats. was tapping maple trees by cutting a diagonal slash in the bark and fixing a bark spout at the low end. The sap ran mostly during the daytime, running fastest when temperatures went below freezing at night and warmed up during the day.

One account of a Native American family group in Michigan during the 1760s reported that the eight men and women in the party tapped some 700 trees in order to gather around 13,700 gallons of maple sap, which collected from the taps in birch bark buckets.

When the buckets were full of sap, they were taken to the sugaring camp

where they were dumped into large tanks assembled from animal hides.

The sap was dipped out of the holding tanks and poured into the 12 iron and brass kettles ranging from 12 to 20 gallons in size the group used.

Fires were kept burning under all 12 kettles around the clock, and during a month’s time, 1,900 pounds of maple sugar and 36 gallons of maple syrup were produced.

As you might guess, the process was pretty labor and materials intensive. It takes about a cord of wood – a

The city obtains $150/year per resident from income taxes and motor fuel taxes rebated by the state. By paying the Census Department $135,000, the city will obtain $640,000 starting in 2017.

This is good? Look at it this way: By wasting $135,000 on a useless census, $640,000 can be redistributed from declining Illinois communities to more prosperous Yorkville. Net result: Illinois wastes $135,000. This obtained unanimous approval of Yorkville’s City Council.

Now: Next step: 1,000 more expanding communities do this. 1,000 times Yorkville’s expenses and benefits: $640 million from the fund; $135 million for census efforts. Where does the state get this money? Take a census of all declining communities? Wait till the 2020 census?

No wonder the state is broke.

Not good for homeowners

To the Editor: It’s time to rid the Yorkville City Council of aldermen that support the Build Program. In 2011 the city put in place a program that rebates $5,000 in permit fees to buyers of new homes that qualify, and in August of last year it was reported that the city had rebated nearly $1.5 million in permit fees to those buyers.

That sounds great until you ask, “If the city is rebating permit fees that include impact fees that cover the costs of infrastructure expenses on new homes, then who is picking up the tab for the lost infrastructure revenue?” If you’ve lived in Yorkville for any length of time, you might know the answer to that question, because you’ve seen your water billing skyrocket due to the Infrastructure fees

Some of the men were detailed to hunt and fish to feed the group while they worked. And according to the account we have of the process, the group also ate 300 pounds of maple sugar while they worked. According to one expert, two pounds of maple sugar a day is sufficient to feed a mature adult.

But, clearly, the bit of dietary variety provided by fish and other game the hunters brought in was undoubtedly welcomed.

We don’t do much maple sugaring

around these parts any more, but at one time it was not uncommon – thus the name given to Sugar Grove in honor of the sugar maples that made up many of the trees there when the settlers arrived. As late as March 1893, Kendall County Record Editor John Marshall noted, “Pure maple syrup from the old Long Grove sugar camp is not bad eating with good warm biscuits or hotcakes.”

Nowadays, we buy our maple syrup at the grocery store or at specialty shops while on vacation, and we don’t

have to wait until March to enjoy it, either. But the nightcrawlers still wriggle out of the ground on a warm, damp March night, and raucous murders of crows still gather to feed on the unfortunates who did not survive another northern Illinois winter as the nights grow a little bit shorter and a little bit warmer under the full March moon.

Civic engagement offers lessons in leadership, development My journey from a newly enrolled student at Waubonsee Community College to president of the Waubonsee Community College Student Senate has been defined by civic engagement.

Involvement in one’s community is not only an important way to give back, but it is also an opportunity that widens your network, sharpens your skills and opens your mind.

During my first year at Waubonsee, I was introduced to several clubs and activities, including the Waubonsee Student Senate. I decided to run for Student Senate to gain leadership experience because I believe that if you want to positively change the world, you should start within your own community. As a student representative, I went from a senator, to vice president, to my current position as senate

This experience has helped me grow in many ways. With this new involvement and new responsibility, I not only developed as a person, but my network and the community I built around myself grew, as well.

As a Waubonsee Community College student, I have learned that “student” is a word that you can mold into whatever experience you seek to gain.

But I have also learned that keeping an open mind is the most important part of the journey of a student, because that allows you to try new things, meet

new people, and discover interests and abilities in yourself that you never imagined before.

Before joining Student Senate, I didn’t know how to format an email, I didn’t know how to properly use a copy machine, and I had never heard of Robert’s Rules of Order as a way to conduct a meeting. But my lessons have been about more than learning new tools and skills. But the rewards of this experience have been many: Not only have I learned all of these skills, but I have also met many people who continue to mentor me, support me and open doors for me. Civic engagement is the thread that binds a community together, and it takes many individuals to create a strong bond. While I have learned much as a student in the classroom, I have also learned so much by engaging with the community that is built around those classrooms.

St. Patrick’s Festival set for Saturday in Yorkville Live music, activities for kids on the agenda

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Live music, food, and a 5K race will be part of the St. Patrick’s festival in downtown Yorkville this Saturday.

Van Emmon Street will be closed east of Route 47 on Saturday morning to make way for the 5K race, according to festival organizer Tim Gleason of Yorkville. Registration for the race starts at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. at Southbank Original Barbecue. Those interested in signing up in advance can do so at runsobrun.com/ signup.html.

The music starts early at 9 a.m. at Southbank with the Gleeson Irish Trio.

Kids activities will be at Southbank in the morning during and after the 5K including face painting, a hunt for leprechaun’s gold, and coloring activities.

Yorkville School District’s Class of 2030 got a warm welcome to the Fox family this week when hundreds of kindergartners and their parents met up for the first time.

The district hosted Kindergarten Welcome Night on March 7 and 8, providing anxious parents everything they need to know come their little ones’ first day of school in August.

There were buses to board and booths to visit, each activity a small way to relieve concerns of parents new to the district.

One of those parents, Courtney Mickelson, was grateful for the opportunity to learn more about her daughter’s educational future. Mickelson recently moved to Yorkville from California and is enrolling her daughter in the district as a kindergartner this year.

“I want to cry,” she said when asked her feelings about the upcoming first day of school. “It’s like she’s five going on 15. I’m trying to keep myself together. But, in case I don’t, they gave me tissues today to use on the first day of school.”

In addition to tissues, parents were given registration packets and invited

“This year, we’ve combined each of those into a district-wide program to make sure all parents are receiving the same information in the same way. It’s our effort to get everyone on the same page and bring consistency,” Dr. Nick Baughman, the district’s chief academic officer, said.

Parents were given a glimpse into the Kindergarten curriculum and provided resources to prepare their students for what’s to come academically.

Most importantly, they were given heart-felt reassurances that their students will be in good hands come fall.

“We know what you’re going through from an emotional standpoint,” Baughman, a parent, told the room of anxious parents. “We have people here that care for your kids as if they’re our own, and I’m one of those people.”

Doctor’s 2nd sex abuse trial could be in Aug.

Accused of assaulting patients at Yorkville office

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville doctor accused of molesting his patients will be going on trial again sometime this summer for another five of his many charges.

Dr. Haohua Yang appeared in Kendall County court March 10 with his new attorney, Robert Motta of Aurora, before Judge Timothy J. McCann.

Yang, who lived in Naperville but practiced in Yorkville, is facing multiple counts of criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse related to accusations that he assaulted female patients at his Yorkville practice. Yang is being held without bond at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

McCann found Yang not guilty of one count of criminal sexual assault in a bench trial in January. A bench trial is decided by a judge and not a jury. This next trial would be on the remaining five charges related to another victim in the case, officials said.

During his hearing last Friday, Motta said he needed some time to go over the case because he just took over as Yang’s attorney.

Following a discussion between Motta, First Assistant State’s Attorney Nemura Pencyla, and McCann, it was decided that a trial could most likely start in August.

Referring to the Haohua Yang length of time from now until the start of the trial, McCann noted that Yang is being held in jail without bond. Motta said he would be filing a motion to modify bond for Yang.

In April of 2015, Yang traveled to and was denied entry to China, and was arrested by federal officials at O’Hare International Airport upon his return to Chicago.

A status hearing was set for 9 a.m.

Abuse victim’s lawyer plans to depose Hastert SHAW MEDIA A lawyer for a sexual abuse victim of Dennis Hastert said she’ll depose the former U.S. House speaker after he’s released from a federal jail, according to the Associated Press.

Kristi Browne represents a former Yorkville High School athlete who is suing Hastert for breach of contract in the hush-money pact that led to the Illinois Republican’s downfall.

Browne said March Dennis 8 that no settlement has Hastert been discussed.

Her client, now a married father, argues he kept his end of the bargain to keep quiet about Hastert’s misconduct when he was the wrestling coach at YHS in the 1970s. Hastert paid him $1.7 million. The man says he’s owed $3.5 million.

The 75-year-old Hastert is due for parole in August. He’s serving a 15-month sentence for illegally structuring bank withdrawals to avoid reporting re-

quirements.

In sentencing Hastert last April in federal court in Chicago, Judge Thomas M. Dunkin, also required that Hastert undergo sex offender treatment, serve two years of supervised release after his time behind bars and pay a $250,000 fine to go to a crime victims’ fund.

In his own statement, Hastert admitted that he “mistreated” some of his YHS athletes and said he was “deeply ashamed.”

“I am sorry to those I hurt and misled,” Hastert said. “What I did was wrong and I regret it.”

When the judge asked whether he sexually abused one wrestler specifically, Hastert said yes, the AP reported.

Hastert left teaching and coaching at YHS in 1981 following his election as a state representative representing the Kendall County area.

He was elected to Congress in 1986.

He was elected Speaker of the House in December 1998.

He left Congress and retired from politics in 2007.

Do you support the BUILD program or other building incentive programs for developers and homebuyers? Why or why not?

The BUILD program helped spur new home construction, following a difficult economic period. Like any taxpayer funded program, its ongoing impact needs to be evaluated timely and transparently.

I don’t have any problem with the BUILD program as long as the city is in the black. Fortunately, we’re not hemorrhaging money right now so if a lesser impact fee, or a delayed payment on permits, or a $10,000 credit to a homebuyer brings new development and new residents to the city, I’m all for it. I look at it as the city making an investment in itself. Say a development makes full-use of the BUILD program, and the city has to write a check for $10,000 to put a family in a new home.

If that family stays for a decade, the city will have made a significant return on that money.

I do support the BUILD program that we can use in focus areas for completion of developments that still need this program. I support TIF districts.

While initially a good way to revitalize growth, the BUILD program now places unfair financial burdens on current residents in Ward 2. Therefore, if elected, I will vote no on the continuance of the BUILD program. I am open to incentive programs that do not place financial burdens on the taxpayers or the city.

Commercial development requires residential rooftops. A top request of the City’s Economic Development Committee is to attract a grocery store on the south side. We are close to making that a reality, which would not have been possible without the residential growth we have seen in Ward 1.

Stay the course! Bonds are being paid off, parks are being developed, trails are being paved, roads are being fixed, businesses are opening and succeeding, residents enjoy a high quality of life. The long-held dream of a grocery store south of the river seems to be picking up traction, for instance, thanks to the hard work of city staff. I don’t see any need for any radical changes to what we’re already doing. That said, I’m always open to new ideas!

A Bristol woman was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove following a single-vehicle accident late Friday evening.

Drive in Bristol was driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Galena Road just east of Kennedy Road at around 11:55 p.m. Friday night when the vehicle went off the road and flipped over. Rambow was issued a ticket for improper lane usage, police said.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Disorderly conduct Yorkville police arrested Lanell D. Robinson, 38, of the 1000 block of Marketplace Drive, Yorkville, following an incident at a store in the 1500 block of Sycamore Road on March 7.

Police said they were dispatched to the store for a report of a woman refusing to leave the store. Police said Robinson had a problem with the ATM in the store and was demanding that the store give her the money that the ATM would not. Once she was told to leave the store, police said Robinson became belligerent and loud, and was then arrested for disorderly conduct.

Battery Yorkville police arrested James Hoak, 77, of the 600 block of Victoria Avenue, Yorkville,

on March 7 following a fight in the 200 block of East Veterans Parkway. Police said they responded to the location for a fight in progress. Police said Hoak struck the victim after a verbal argument over the victim’s child’s behavior. Hoak was arrested for battery, police said.

Dog bite Yorkville police cited Mason Allen, 20, of the 300 block of East Van Emmon St., Yorkville, March 6 after his dog allegedly bit a person. Police said they responded to the 300 block of East Van Emmon for a report of a dog bite. The victim was taken to a hospital and Allen was cited for not having his dog on a leash and a dangerous animal charge, police said.

Yorkville man charged with DUI after high-speed crash

A Yorkville man was arrested on DUI and other charges last night after a high-speed crash on Galena Road.

Yorkville police arrested Bryan S. Dymacek, 28, of the 200 block of Bertram Drive, Yorkville, for Bryan S. driving under the Dymacek influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident, illegal transportation of alcohol, no insurance, speeding 102 mph in a 45 mph zone, and cited him for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said Dymacek’s vehicle, a 2012 Ford Fusion, was traveling eastbound on Galena Road east of Kennedy Road at a high rate of speed at approximately 11:39 p.m. when police attempted to turn around and catch up with his vehicle. An Ottawa woman and her two passengers were taken to area hospitals with critical injuries following a two-vehicle crash on Route 52 at Grove Road south of Oswego Monday morning, State Police said.

State Police said that, according to a preliminary investigation, Brittany Hutcheson, 28, of Ottawa was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition northbound on Grove Road and was stopped at the stop sign at Route 52, and a 1996 Mack tractor trailer driven by Jose Guardado, 51, of Joliet was traveling eastbound on Route 52, at around 8:55 a.m. Monday morning.

State Police said that for unknown reasons, Hutcheson’s vehicle entered the intersection in front of the Mack truck and the truck struck the driver’s side of Hutcheson’s vehicle.

Hutcheson and her two passengers were taken to area hospitals and Hutcheson remains in critical condition, according to State Police. Hutcheson was cited with failure to yield at an intersection.

Guardado refused medical treatment, police said.

All parties were wearing seat belts, police said.

The Illinois State Police Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating this crash and it remains under investigation, police said.

Informational meetings next week on Newark referendum KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Two informational meetings are scheduled next week on the bond issue referendum for Newark Community High School District 18.

One will be next Monday, March 20, at the high school, 413 Chicago Road in Newark, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Another meeting is set for next Tuesday, March 21, at Millbrook Junior High, 8411 Fox River Drive in Millbrook, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The meetings will address the referendum for a $16 million building bond issue on the April 4 ballot that will cover building renovations, classroom improvements and a gym, locker rooms, fine arts center, concession stand, restrooms and weight room. District reserve funds will also be used, according to the referendum

committee.

Proposed plans for the high school include: new science labs; ADA compliant improvements (elevator); updated Family and Consumer Science room; new Fine Arts Center for band, chorus, drama, and Art Department space for various events; weight room with community access; new competition gym and locker rooms; relocate baseball and softball fields to adjacent property (all fields will be together with restrooms, concession stand and paved parking); creation of new classrooms, nurse’s office, social services offices and administrative offices.

According to the referendum committee, the added property tax amount for a home with a $200,000 market value would be $627.28 per year.

16-year-old Plainfield girl dies in Walker Road single-car crash

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A 16-year-old girl from Plainfield was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the area of Walker Road and Arbeiter Road in unincorporated Na-Au-Say Township Tuesday evening, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection at approximately 4:58 p.m. for a report of a single-vehicle car accident where the vehicle struck a utility pole.

Police said when deputies arrived, the driver of the car, a 16-year-old female, was being treated for her injuries by Plainfield paramedics.

The passenger, identified as Alyssa Smith, 16, of the 2000 block of River Bend Lane, Plainfield, was located in the vehicle and transported to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was later pronounced dead, according to Sheriff’s police.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash with the assistance from Illinois State Police.

AURORA – Aurora University is planning to cut 30 full-time faculty lecturers and 15 administrative staff members due to a lack of state funding resulting from the continuing budget impasse, a spokesman said.

The problem is the state stopped funding $6 million in annual Monetary Award Program grants, which help some 1,500 students, university spokesman Steve McFarland said.

As the state is in its second year without a budget, no MAP grant money has come to the university for its students, McFarland said.

The university pledged to make up that gap for each student who qualifies for the MAP grant, because they “should not be burdened by a political stalemate,” McFarland said.

“The last couple of years caused us to cut more and more from our operating budget,” McFarland said. “It’s not just faculty; we’ve had a number of administrative staff who have also been let go and positions eliminated.

We’ve had salary freezes, and, finally, we just could not overcome the effects of Springfield any more.”

The school’s officials told 30 fulltime lecturers that they would be cut from the private university’s staff at the end of the spring semester. McFarland said the faculty lecturers are on year-to-year contracts, as opposed to assistants and full professors who have longer contracts.

“We told them in February, so they can plan accordingly through the end of the semester in early May,” McFarland said. “What we then did, though, was identify teaching assignments and teaching needs and offered a different title of visiting professor … and offered that contract to 17 of them.”

The university’s students were promised $6 million per year and – for many years – the state fulfilled that 100 percent, McFarland said.

“Given the current stalemate, we are unhopeful that anything will happen,” McFarland said. “We are afraid the program will go away in its entirety.”

The money is generally dispersed through the university for students who are promised a certain amount of money from these grants, he said.

McFarland said this is the first time in 15 years the university was forced to take action like this.

State Rep. Steve Andersson, R-Geneva, said the actions by Aurora University are “just another excellent example of why we need to get past this impasse and get a budget.”

“I respect what Aurora University is doing and making hard choices,” Andersson said. “Unfortunately, the state is not making the hard choice of coming together and developing a real compromise so we can start funding higher education and other core services we have an obligation to provide. This is another example of the tragedy of not having a budget.”

Aurora University is a private, fouryear school with about 5,000 students across all its campuses, and 200 faculty, McFarland said. The school’s tuition is $11,290 per semester for 12 to 17 hours of credit or $650 per semester hour for students taking one to 11 semester hours, according to its website, aurora.edu.

Woman had worked for county; teen girls had attended OHS

Brittany and Tiffany Coffland attended Oswego High School until December of 2014, according to information provided Tuesday by School District 308.

Two 9 mm handguns were recovered in the condo, but Kintz said police have not yet confirmed that they were owned by Randall Coffland, or which weapon or weapons were used in the shootings.

One gun was in the vicinity of Randall Coffland; the other was found in a closet, Kintz said.

Evidence technicians found a single bullet casing in the vicinity of each victim, Kintz said. A single bullet injured both of Anjum Coffland’s legs, he said.

“The weapons are still part of our investigation … to determine where the weapons came from. He did have a valid FOID card,” Kintz said, referring to the firearm owner’s identification card that gun owners are required to have.

“We have no indication of a struggle, other than the violence of the crime with gunshots,” Kintz said. “As far as I know, there was nothing strewn about to show there was a fight. The coroner

will have to take a look at that on Monday.”

One daughter was found on a couch and the other in a bedroom, he said.

Police spoke to the mother at the hospital, but Kintz said he did not know the content of those conversations.

Kintz also could not say why Anjum Coffland was at her husband’s residence that day.

“We have to figure out what brought her back to the apartment,” Kintz said.

Police do not know what, if anything, triggered the chain of events, and investigators plan to talk to friends and others who knew the family, Kintz said.

“We don’t have anything at this point,” Kintz said. “That is part of the follow-up – we have to talk to people and determine what led to this. … This was a tragic and horrific event. Three lives were lost, and another was injured. First responders have also had to deal with the aftermath of this event, and our entire community mourns the loss of the victims.”

Kintz said that although the shootings still are under investigation by both his department and the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, the official causes of death will be determined by the coroner.

ST. CHARLES – Randall Coffland told a 911 dispatcher Friday that he shot his daughters to death, that he shot his wife, and that he was going to shoot himself.

“I just shot and killed my children,” Randall Coffland is heard saying on a 911 recording. “And I shot my wife.

And I’m going to shoot myself. … I’m going to kill myself now, too.”

At a news conference Sunday, St. Charles Deputy Chief David Kintz released the 911 tapes in addition to chilling details about the deaths of 16-year-old twins Brittany S. Coffland and Tiffany S. Coffland at the hands of their father.

Even as Randall Coffland was telling the 911 dispatcher what he had done, his wife, Anjum Coffland, 46, can be heard screaming to another emergency dispatcher that her husband had

killed her girls and shot her in the legs.

“Oh my god, my husband shot my kids!” Anjum Coffland said to the 911 operator. “My daughters are dead! …

I’m going into shock. I’ve lost a lot of blood. … He’s finally lost it.”

Randall Coffland, 48, and his daughters all were found with single gunshot wounds to their heads in a condominium at 450 S. First St., St. Charles, where he lived with the girls, Kintz said.

His wife was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Sunday, Kintz said.

The girls would have celebrated their 17th birthdays Tuesday, Kintz said.

Randall Coffland and the twins were living at the South First Street address, while Anjum Coffland was living separately from her husband in another condominium on South Fifth Avenue in St. Charles. Kintz said he did not know how long they had been living apart.

Prior to 2015, Randy and Anjum Coffland lived on Highview Court south of Mill Road in Oswego. According to Kendall County property records, they bought their Oswego home in 2002.

PEORIA – Cameron Myre stared into the spacious backdrop of Carver Arena, a shooter searching for an answer.

Myre and Newark couldn’t find it Friday.

The Norsemen, for all their offensive abilities, have struggled to shoot on the college courts the past two years. They did in a supersectional loss last year.

Newark’s defense covered for its shooting shortcomings in this year’s supersectional.

Not so this time.

Newark’s cold shooting, coupled with inopportune foul problems for star Will Clausel, was a perfect storm in the Norsemen’s 63-48 loss to Okawville in the Class 1A state semifinal.

The Norseman shot just 33.9 percent (19-for-56) Friday, including 4-for-23 from 3-point range. They missed 19 of their first 21 3-point shots.

“It’s partially the environment. It’s our second game in an arena like that, and we didn’t shoot very well in the super,” Clausel said. “Maybe that’s part of it, but it was just a bad game for us.”

Dylan Patrick scored 17 points and Clausel added 12 for Newark. Clausel’s driving runner 21 seconds into the game gave the Norsemen their only lead, 2-0.

Noah Frederking, a 6-foot-4 Evansville recruit, led Okawville (32-3) with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

Newark shot just 2-for-14 in the first quarter, and endured an eight-minute drought in the first half. When Myre hit a corner 3-pointer to end the third quarter, it was Newark’s first basket outside

15 feet.

“Our worst shooting game that we’ve had all year, tied for the most misses we’ve ever had with last year’s supersectional,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “They’re a good defensive team, but I thought we had plenty of looks. Sometimes that’s just the way it goes.”

For all its shooting woes, Newark had an opening to make it a game.

Patrick scored eight of his 17 points in the third quarter. Patrick’s jumper cut Okawville’s lead to 33-27, the closest the margin was since the first quarter.

“We started off slow, so I had to get something going for my team,” Patrick said.

He did it playing at far less than 100 percent.

“People don’t know it but Dylan was sick the last two days,” Tollefson said. “He was having trouble. He he’s a strong game and he’s competitive.”

So, though, is Frederking, named a first team All-State selection by the Associated Press.

He scored 15 of his 24 points in the third quarter. Frederking had nine straight Okawville points after Patrick’s basket, pushing the margin back to double figures. He did so after second-team All-State selection Clausel was switched off him with three fouls.

“I would have liked a better shot at him,” said Clausel, who had played Frederking once previously in AAU. “Foul trouble kind of took it away from me. I just have to stay away from those.”

Clausel entered the game with 1,599 career points, fifth-most in Newark history.

Yorkville senior in 3-point competition

He listens to his own music, and falls asleep for a spell. Then he wakes up and shoots.

It’s worked like a charm for the Yorkville senior.

Owens has advanced to the Class 4A state 3-point showdown in Peoria this weekend. Owens is among 32 finalists who will be shooting in preliminaries Thursday at Carver Arena.

It will be Owens first time at state, fan or participant.

“It’s nice to continue my season,” Owens said. “It’s kind of nerve-wracking going down there and a big deal. I don’t really know what to expect.”

He wasn’t expecting this.

Owens shot just 21 percent (12-for58) from 3-point range this season for Yorkville. He hit 11 of 15 shots, first in regionals, and then was one of three shooters to go 10-for-15 at sectionals.

“He’s a great kid, has worked extremely hard,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “We’re happy for him. He’s been coming in in the morning getting five, six, seven rounds in. We’re setting it up for how it’s going to be.”

Owens will have a little extra cheering section.

His grandparents live in Lewistown, 40 miles southwest of Peoria, and rarely get to Yorkville for games. They’ll be at Carver Arena.

“It will be a whole new experience,” Owens said. “I’ll just try to hit as many shots as possible.”

Samantha Keane

Samantha Keane is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

The daughter of Marta and Michael Keane, Samantha will study Aerospace Engineering at an undetermined university in the Fall.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Samantha Keane prides herself in her ability to help others. Throughout her personal life and educational career, the future Aerospace Engineer has made selflessness her goal.

For six years, until her grandmother passed, Keane spent time before and after school taking care of her sick grandmother, in addition to participating in band, tennis and various other clubs.

She helped found the school’s Medical Club, is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in the school’s Art Club. This comes in addition to her volunteer pursuits and school work load taking Advanced Placement classes.

When her grandmother passed away in 2013, Samantha began volunteering more as her extra time would allow.

From the Plainfield Environmental Fair, to Recycle Palooza and hosting Household Hazardous Waste events, Samantha sought out ways to help others. She made blankets for cancer patients and tutored students in need.

“From all of my activities I have learned to assist people and I have gained time management skills over the years of doing these tasks,” she said.

Taking AP classes has helped Samantha prepare for a future college workload, and helped teach her good study habits.

“By taking a variety of classes throughout high school, I have discovered my career path of engineering and though I have also learned that I am a well rounded individual in English, music, math, science and history. I have also learned my weaknesses and how to overcome them.”

Farren played in the outfield as a sophomore, then was plugged in at second base last year. Committed to Central College in Iowa, Farren will bat leadoff or hit second.

Anchoring Yorkville’s lineup will be senior Brendon Reifsteck, who led the Northern Illinois Big 12 East in batting average (.467) and on-base percentage (.610) last year.

New mom Regnier back on the diamond to coach Foxes

Yorkville’s softball coach on January 27 gave birth to her first child, a baby boy. Regnier is still on maternity leave from school, but being a new mom didn’t stop her from making practice from day one as a full-time coach.

profession. Tom Regnier also teaches at Yorkville, and is an assistant football coach.

“I don’t think my players were completely surprised I kept coaching, but maybe they were surprised that I’d be back for tryouts,” Regnier said. “I wanted them to know that you can be a working mom. Coaching softball is my passion.”

Jaros will be joined on the mound by juniors Allyson Dilday and Katie Marker. Hannah Bazan is a third returning starter in center field. Flanking her in left field will be senior Brittany Thomas, who missed all of last season with a broken arm in a scrimmage but is in her fourth year on varsity.

What does 50 years in coaching mean?

“I don’t know, you’ve got to be around a long time,” said Davidson, who just completed his fourth year as coach of the high school program at Yorkville’s Parkview Christian Academy – his 50th overall. “I think I still have a lot of fire for the game.”

Davidson will be 72 in three weeks, yet the calling to mold young Christian men is still in the blood. So is his love for basketball. He’ll be in Peoria this weekend with his 10 grandchildren to watch the state finals.

Few have Davidson’s perspective on the game.

He played baseball and basketball at Minooka, and at Illinois Wesleyan where he graduated in 1967.

He’s coached non-stop since he was 22.

Davidson spent 10 seasons at Yorkville High School, coaching the varsity the final six (1971-72 through 1976-77), posting an 82-73 record. He followed that with 31 years at Aurora Christian, retiring from coaching there in 2008 after 549 wins.

The move to Aurora Christian felt like a higher calling to an athletic program he started. He’s come full circle to a program similarly in its infancy.

Davidson started four freshmen on the varsity team the first year, three the next year. The Falcons have gone 45-51 in four years.

Parkview only has 40-some high schoolers - most of the school’s 300-plus enrollment are younger kids but 16 of the 40 or so play basketball.

Just like at Aurora Christian, Davidson is basket-

ball coach, AD, teaches Bible and history and serves as Dean of Students.

“I do exactly the same thing here,” Davidson said, noting “I don’t have quite the energy 40 years later.”

Maybe not, but Davidson holds big plans.

The Falcons currently play their home games at Helmar Lutheran Church in Newark, but that could change soon. Parkview in July plans to purchase the entire Club 47 Fitness facility on Countryside Parkway where its upper campus is currently housed.

An approved member of the IHSA, Parkview hopes to be a full member within two years. Davidson thinks his team will be pretty decent next year with 6-foot-4 Jake Angelo and 6-2 Josiah Finnestad and Stephen Brennwald. Parkview, part of the Illinois Christian Conference, played Mooseheart this year, and Davidson would love to get Aurora Christian on his schedule.

“I’m going to call them,” Davidson said.

Davidson wants his kids to love basketball, “a great game.”

What he takes most pride in, though, has nothing to do with dribbling or shooting.

“I want to have a part in kids coming to Christ, to help a Christian boy develop into a Christian man and then hopefully a husband, maybe a dad,” Davidson said. “That’s the reward in coaching. The wins and losses, nobody remembers them anyway. People will remember how you helped them develop into a man of God.”

Yorkville junior Kerigan McKenna took second place at the Illinois Girls Folkstyle State Championships this past Saturday.

North this year, went 13-2 in JV matches. She also got in two varsity matches.

“She’s not one to shy away from competition,” Oster said.

It’s easy to see why.

The McKenna triplets – Kerigan and brothers Sean and Quinn – started wrestling with the Waubonsie Wrestling Club when they were 6. Sean now wrestles at Marmion, Quinn at Naperville North.

Their dad, Robert McKenna, wrestled at Naperville Central.

He passed along wrestling to his daughter, but that’s not all. He also showed her the basics in boxing since she was little.

During wrestling season, she goes to wrestling practice until 5:30 p.m., goes home to eat, then heads to Pache-

Ko Boxing in Aurora for practice from 6 to 8 p.m.

McKenna had her first bout in November, winning by technical knockout, and will be competing in the Golden Gloves Tournament in April in suburban Cicero.

“I’ve been trying to get more [bouts],” McKenna said. “Wrestling and boxing, they’re both aggressive sports. Other than that there’s not much similarity.”

McKenna also practices judo, and with high school wrestling season over plans to take up jiu jitsu.

McKenna last year earned a spot on the Illinois/USA wrestling team. She traveled to Las Vegas, Texas and North Dakota.

She’s beaten a wrestler who made

news this month.

Mack Beggs, a 17-year-old transgender boy from Texas who had been taking testosterone for well over a year, was thrust into the national spotlight after winning the girls state title.

McKenna wrestled Beggs in 2015 in Fargo, North Dakota.

“It was when [Beggs] had started taking the testosterone,” McKenna said. “At the time I had no idea [he] was doing that. I just thought of it as a normal match. I wrestle boys all the time. Everybody was talking about it for a while. It was cool that I beat [him].”

McKenna admitted to being scared about the move to Yorkville from Naperville this year, but she liked the fit.

Interest in girls wrestling has taken off the last two decades. Since 1994, the number of girls wrestling in high school has gone from 800 to well over 11,000, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Oster had a girl that wrestled for him at Lockport go on to the Olympics, and has had other girls wrestle for him at Yorkville. McKenna had wrestled with Yorkville’s Brett Stauffenberg and Justin Harnes in kids’ club.

“I like how they’re more into wrestling here at Yorkville,” McKenna said.

“At the scrimmage for wrestle-offs, the people from the school come out to support wrestling.”

Jake Oster has seen both sides to Kerigan McKenna.

Yorkville’s junior is a typical giggly teenager when she walks into the wrestling room for practice.

“But when we start wrestling, the switch comes on,” said Oster, Yorkville’s wrestling coach. “She’s a girl that likes to compete.”

McKenna, indeed, means business.

At the first-ever girls state tournament sponsored by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association in Springfield last weekend, McKenna took second in the 122-pound weight class.

McKenna pinned all three opponents at sectionals to reach state, then pinned Mascoutah’s Eve Slago in 49 seconds and Larkin’s Cassandra Brother in 2:48 to reach the finals.

There she lost a 10-0 decision to East Peoria’s Randi Robison.

For her achievement, Kerigan McKenna is the Record Athlete of the Week.

“My first two matches were good matches. That last one, I think I underestimated her,” McKenna said. “She got me on two good moves. The third period I kept trying to turn her, but she was stronger than I expected.”

McKenna is no stranger to the state experience.

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com PEORIA – Will Clausel’s basketball story at Newark came full circle, an arc that losses in his last two games couldn’t break.

Clausel’s uncle, Tracy, starred for the Norsemen in the 1970s. Clausel, older brother Jack and lifelong neighbor and teammate Steve McGrath were kids who grew up following the 2011 Newark state championship team.

Clausel appreciated the chance to be at the other end.

Almost three full sections of Peoria’s Carver Arena was a sea of Newark blue for two days, there to support Clausel and the Norsemen.

“I wish our season could have ended like theirs did in 2011,” Clausel said, “but like coach said in the locker room there’s little kids that are looking up to us like we were looking up to those guys. It’s nice to be a part of it. Hopefully in a few years there will be another group down here and we’ll be cheering them on.”

The Norsemen took home the program’s second state basketball trophy, although it wasn’t quite the one they aspired toward. Chicago Hope Academy beat Newark 60-46 in the Class 1A third-place on Saturday.

Clausel, a second team All-State selection by the Associated Press, and fellow senior Cameron Myre both scored 19 points for Newark, who led 29-28 at halftime. But the Norsemen (286) couldn’t overcome Hope Academy’s sizzling 61.1 percent shooting. Newark made just two field goals in the third quarter after its hot start.

All-Stater Jordan Doss led Hope Academy with 20 points, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range.

“We didn’t want to come home with fourth place, but the important thing is we got here,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “Basketball is a funny game. (Hope Academy) hit two outside shots (in the semifinals) Friday. Today was a different story.”

Hope Academy and Newark were not strangers. Newark’s 2011 team beat Hope Academy in a sectional final at Mooseheart en route to the state title.

This was Hope Academy’s first state appearance.

Both Newark and Hope Academy struggled through cold shooting in the semifinals. Both broke out early Saturday.

For the Norsemen, Myre hit his first four 3-point attempts, and Clausel scored seven in a first quarter that saw Newark shoot 54.5 percent. It was tied 18-18 after a quarter, and Clausel’s two free throws sent Newark into halftime ahead 29-28.

The Norsemen never led again after Doss’ 3-pointer to start the third quarter.

“I wasn’t necessarily feeling it in warmups, but I was definitely feeling it in the games,” Myre said. “I just really didn’t want to lose.”

Newark didn’t lose too often the last four years with seniors like Clausel, Myre and McGrath, going 96-29.

Tollefson put the ball in Clausel’s hands as a freshman point guard, and he ran with it. That faith was not lost on the Newark senior, who finished his career fifth on the school’s all-time scoring list with over 1,600 points.

“A lot of coaches wouldn’t have done that for a little freshman, but he trusted me,” Clausel said. “We did some special things.”

Clausel’s immediate future is on Newark’s baseball team, a sport he laughed he hasn’t played since “pony league.” Basketball is in his future, too, a college decision he expects to make soon.

Newark will return starters Dylan Patrick and Beau Brown next year, as well as sixth man Corey Jacobson.

Tollefson won’t forget his seniors.

“I can’t say enough about these guys. They’re etched into my heart,” Tollefson said. “I just love these guys like they’re family. They’re disappointed now but years from now they’ll look back on this with fondness.”
