Sheriff’s deputies reDeverick sponded to the jail MonAlex day morning at about 6:43 a.m. to assist corrections deputies with a non-compliant inmate. Police said that Alex was identified as the inmate refusing to comply with corrections deputies’ orders after attempting

to clear multiple inmates from the pod common area at the jail. “[Alex] allegedly forcibly detained another male inmate in the pod with a weapon,” according to a sheriff’s office statement. “Alex was observed threatening to kill the inmate if his demands were not met. Corrections deputies were able to de-escalate the confrontation with Alex and he was taken into custody without incident.”

The male inmate whom Alex detained did not sustain any physical injuries, the sheriff’s office reported.

BRIEFS Kids reported missing find their way home

Two children reported missing from Circle Center Grade School last Thursday were found safe at home, police said.

Yorkville police, along with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Bristol-­ Kendall Fire Protection District, responded to the school at 4:02 p.m. March 2 to a report of two children missing.

Police said they were told that there were a missing 5-year-old and 6-year-old who had not boarded the school bus to go home at the end of the school day.

“A search of the area located the juveniles and it was learned that they had safely walked home instead of getting on Lisbon Seward Fire Department the bus,” Yorkville police reported.

American Legion Auxiliary offers scholarships

The Yorkville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 489 is offering two scholarships: one to a high school senior graduating this year and one to a student currently attending college.

Downtown Yorkville businesses will host St. Pat’s event March 18

Several of the downtown Yorkville businesses will be hosting a St. Patrick’s festival on Saturday, March 18.

Four-foot-wide safety shoulders will be added to Fox Road this summer from Poplar Drive to Fox River Drive as part of a $1.45 million Kendall County highway project.

“While we were out there working we thought, you know what, let’s put some safety shoulders on there ...”

“That is a complete closure of Galena Road, which we hate to do because there is a lot of traffic,” he said.

There are some structural issues with the creek bridge, Klaas said. He said officials would rather replace the bridge than to have to close it because of dangerous structural problems.

“That bridge is having some issues,” he said. “The substructure is having some problems and before we would have to post the road, we figured let’s just get the whole thing replaced and it should be good for another 50, 60, 70 years.”

around this time next year, with a start date in late spring and completion in late summer or early fall of 2018.

Traffic on westbound Galena will be detoured onto Kennedy Road. The county, city of Yorkville, and Bristol Township recently entered into an intergovernmental agreement that involves the county contributing $160,000 toward the repair of Kennedy Road to prepare it as a detour route.

Klaas said the city wanted to perform a more complete repair of Kennedy Road that should make it last a decade or more.

“We were going to design that improvement on Kennedy, where we would be the lead, but the city said we want to spend a little more money on it because it’s in such bad shape,” he said “That simplified things a lot for us.”

Klaas said the Kennedy Road repairs should be complete in time for motorists to use the road as a detour for Galena Road when it is closed that summer.

“They’ve agreed to have that Kennedy Road work done by May of 2018, so the road would be in good shape before we close Galena Road,” he said.

Kendall County will be adding safety shoulders to Fox Road between Yorkville and Plano this summer as part of a nearly $1.5 million project.

The County Board approved spending $1,450,000 in motor fuel tax revenue on the Fox Road project at its Feb. 21 meeting.

County Highway Engineer Fran Klaas said bids on the project will go out on March 31 and work will begin sometime this summer, most likely in June.

The project will involve resurfacing Fox Road’s pavement and adding 4-foot-wide safety shoulders along the side of the road, from the Fox Lawn subdivision at Poplar Drive to Fox River Drive.

“The road hasn’t been resurfaced in approximately 15 years, so it’s due to get resurfaced,” Klaas said.

The safety shoulders will help pedestrians who are using the road, he said.

“While we were out there working we thought, you know what, let’s put some safety shoulders on there because so many people are walking, jogging, riding their bikes from Yorkville out to Silver Springs,” he said.

Prior to the road being resurfaced, crews will be fixing up a “tiny bridge” on Fox Road just west of the Fox Lawn subdivision, he said. Klaas informed the County Board last July that the bridge would need to be replaced due to a federal weight limit mandate. He said the re-evaluation of the bridge is part of a recent federal mandate to agencies to take a look at older bridges for structural integrity. The bridge was built in 1958 and widened in 1981, he told the board.

“We are going to slide a precast box culvert through the existing bridge opening, it’s kind of a unique thing,” Klaas said. “We bid that late summer, fall, but the contractor has not been out there yet.”

Klaas said there is a May 31 deadline for the box culvert to be installed “and we would like to have that completely finished before we pave the new road.” He said he expects that work to be done in April or May. He said Fox Road should remain open with some daytime lane closures during the project.

“We don’t anticipate having to completely close the road for either the box culvert or the overlay projects,” he said. “The plan is to keep Fox Road open.”

Why April 4 election is worth the bother When it comes to local elections like the one coming up on April 4, historic voter turnout here in Kendall County indicates that most voters just don’t want to be bothered.

In the last local election held in April 2015, just 11 percent of all the eligible registered voters in the county cast ballots. The same number – 11 percent of the county’s registered voters – went to the polls in the 2013 local election.

But voters – especially those who pay property taxes and have children in schools – should take an active interest since the candidates that will be elected to local school and village boards, city councils and township offices will help shape the budgets and property tax levies adopted by those agencies every year. Those elected to local school boards will also help chart the educational direction of

local schools, while those elected to village boards and city councils will have a direct say in the future development of their respective communities.

By state law, the role of township government is significantly more limited and, as a result, the nine township governments in Kendall County account for a tiny portion of the amount owed on local property tax bills each year. But those elected to township offices still have the same responsibility to taxpayers that all local governments share: to provide the

required public services in a fiscally sound and transparent manner.

Early voting is now underway here in Kendall County at the county clerk’s office at 111 W. Fox St. in downtown Yorkville. Voting and voter registration is available in Room 103 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, and Saturday, April 1. The last day to cast an early ballot at the clerk’s office will be Monday, April 3, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Early voting will also be available at Oswego Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill in Oswego and at Plano City Hall, 7 N. James St., beginning on Monday, March 20. City of Aurora residents living in the Kendall County portion of the city can register and cast ballots through the Aurora Election Commission. Full Snow Moon offered hope spring was coming According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, this month’s full moon will rise tomorrow evening, March 10.

By the time February rolled around for our pioneer ancestors, they’d been coping with a frontier winter for a couple months, and were watching their food and firewood consumption pretty carefully.

The Native Americans of the region who had been displaced by the pioneers had looked on February with trepidation, an attitude that shows up in their nicknames for the month’s full moon.

The February full moon was called the Full Snow Moon in some tribal traditions, and it’s not hard to see why.

Even today, February is the month when we’re likely to get the most winter snowstorms. Its alternate, grimmer, nickname was the Full Hunger Moon, which suggests a time of year when food was running low.

Those nicknames were embraced by the pioneers as well, because life on the frontier was hard for both Indians and whites alike.

Some winters were, of course, a lot harder than others. The Winter of the Deep Snow, 1830-1831, was one of the harshest ever in the Upper Midwest, and was a bleak milestone for those who had arrived and were trying to survive. Forever after, those who lived

The struggle to merely survive the fierce winters of the settlement era had effects that extended throughout the subsequent months. Usually, winter was the time when a variety of upkeep chores were done, from repairing harnesses and plows to make sure they were ready to go on the first spring day farmers could get in the fields with their teams, to threshing and winnowing the grain that had been harvested the previous autumn.

Threshing during that era was a labor-intensive family affair with wives and children all pitching in, first to beat bundles of dried wheat, oats, rye, and barley with flails to separate the grain from the stalks and then to winnow it to separate the kernels of grain from the chaff.

And no matter how much firewood had been stockpiled the previous summer and fall, it always seemed like more was needed to heat the pioneers’ drafty log cabins. During a northern Illinois winter, a cabin fireplace

Harvesting firewood went on nearly all year round as time permitted.

Trees had to be felled and then cut into lengths to be hauled to the cabin where the logs could be split for use in the fireplace. The old saying that firewood warms you twice, once when you cut it and once when it’s burned for heat, was never truer than during those

pioneer years.

During the winter months, men took care of the farm’s livestock, hauling forage for cattle and horses and feed for the farm’s pigs. Meanwhile, farm wives worked at spinning and weaving along with the usual cooking and cleaning.

Flax grown during the summer was laboriously processed until it was ready to be spun into linen thread, which then could be woven into linen cloth on the family loom. Likewise,

Then a new loom was constructed in the pioneers’ new home. That’s apparently the method my great-great-grandparents used to build my great-great-grandmother’s countermarch rug loom – a piece of

People looking to really cut health care costs are using very high deductible plans in excess of $10,000 for a family.

These are combined with health savings accounts (HSA) and the consumer is really involved in choosing or just refusing certain procedures. These sound like Obamacare Bronze and Silver plans.

But those are going to be scrapped and forgotten really soon when Congress gets done with them.

The new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Tom Price, is a big fan of HSAs and price transparency. He thinks a patient with “skin in the game” will pick the most effective medical procedure if they know the costs. So when you are on the table in the ER clutching your chest and you are given a choice of a drug-eluting stent or a full CABG, the patient will most likely choose the more cost-effective treatment.

Medicare is now being offered to seniors based on a trial model called value-based insurance design (V-Bid). There are services that have a high value, such as cancer screenings, and the patient pays a lower deductible. Then there are services like spinal surgeries or knee surgeries that are considered low value, and the patient pays a much higher price The isolation of those pioneer families during northern Illinois’ long winters was profound. There really weren’t any towns close at hand when the earliest settlers arrived; often neighbors were miles away. But those sparse and scattered farm families did their best to try to get together to create their own social situations.

Shelling bees, where neighbors would get together to shell corn from cobs, quilting bees, sewing bees, and other events making the drudgery of early 19th century rural life go by a little quicker were popular pursuits.

In the years after those first ones on the frontier when families had the wherewithal to buy sleighs, February became a popular month for hitching up the team and heading across the fields to visit friends or attend church or gather at the local one-room school for an evening of socializing.

In the 1840s, many of the settlers who arrived were from New York and the New England states, folks who took both religion and education seriously. Schoolhouses often did double duty in those early years as school

rooms during the week and churches on Sunday. The communities that grew up around them considered those early schools and churches to be the equivalent of modern community centers.

As February wore on, the days began getting longer and the cold nights shorter, fortunately because lamps and candles were expensive and always in short supply. Abraham Lincoln’s reminisces of using the light of the family’s Kentucky farm home fireplace to read by was not uncommon into the mid and late 19th century.

But each of those lengthening days was a promise that better, warmer times were on the way. As long as provisions and firewood held out, it gave pioneer families keeping close to their cabin’s fireplace something to look forward to as the Full Snow Moon lit up the Fox Valley’s frozen winter landscape.

“With the renovation, the library

feels more open and modern,” Library Director Lynette Heiden said. “The library feels bigger, less boxed in. People have been excited about the changes.

Usually, we average 40 to 50 people per day. Since we reopened, we’ve been averaging 80 people per day. The phone has been ringing off the hook.”

The library began as a Mothers’ Club for area women in 1924. In 1961, Charles B. Phillips, a local-born printer and farmer, donated $20,000 to fund the construction of a library building.

The Charles B. Phillips Library held a dedication and open house in June 1962. In 2002, a referendum passed creating the Charles B. Phillips Library District.

The library’s renovation process started in January, when the library board planned the purchase of a new circulation desk.

“The current circulation desk used to be at the old Sandwich Library in the 1950s and is held together with tape,” Heiden said. “The library started getting dingy looking, and we needed an update, something to change the

NEWARK – Brandon Sullivan of Newark visits the library every other week with his two children to select movies and books to take home. After not visiting the library last week, he arrived this week to find an entirely renovated library.

“The renovations are really nice, and everything just seems better,” Sullivan said. “The library feels more modern and new. The new carpet is much more durable, especially with my two kids running around, and everything is a lot more opened up.”

The Charles B. Phillips Library, 6 N. Jackson St. in Newark, closed for interior renovations on Feb. 13 and reopened Feb. 27. A library open house to celebrate the renovation will be held sometime in April.

Changes during the renovation, which cost approximately $25,000, include a new shade of paint and new carpet flooring. A new custom-built circulation desk, which cost approximately $10,000, is expected to be installed March 23. The library will be closed for the day during the desk’s installation.

Continued from page 7 look. The flooring had never been changed and the last time the walls were painted was more than 20 years ago. “The renovation started with the new desk, then we decided to paint the back room, then paint the entire library, then add carpet flooring,� she said.

During the January meeting, the library board also decided to update the library building by painting the walls, changing shades from a pale yellow to the more modern “greige,� a shade between brown and gray.

The library’s tile flooring, original to the building and installed in the early 1960s, began to chip away. With no extra tiles and the floor becoming increasingly damaged, the library board also discussed purchasing new flooring, but they did not have enough money in their budget.

When the Friends of the Library learned that the library board could not afford a new floor, they donated $10,000 toward the purchase of carpeting. “As the Friends of the Library, we support our library any way we can,� said Rita Smith, president of Friends of the Library. “Through donations over the years, we saved money. When

we heard about the renovation, we voted unanimously to help with the project.� “We thought that if we were going to fix up the library, we should do it right,� said Nancy Larson, Friends of the Library secretary. “With carpet flooring, it will give the library a warmer, quieter feel. Children can sit on the floor and read more comfortably.�

Heiden said she is grateful to the library staff, who worked around the clock to move rented shelves on wheels during the renovation process.

Four crates of books were pushed uphill in the middle of the road and were housed by the Newark Fire Department when the new flooring was installed. The fire department also allowed the library the use of their facility during the renovation. “Newark is all about community,� said Barb Sucich, treasurer of the library board. “The library is so important to our small town. Families visit the library together and children stop in on their way home from school. In Easter, we have the ‘Egg Hunt with the Bunny.’ In May, we host the high school students’ art show and we have the pork chop barbecue on the Fourth of July. “My hope is that when we’re all done with the renovation, everyone will come into the library and take a peek,� she said.

GENEVA – American Legion Fox River Geneva Post 75 was host to more than 80 veterans March 3, who packed the hall’s meeting room so a panel of experts could hear their concerns.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, Dr. Steve Braverman, director of the Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital, and Hughes Turner, executive director of the VA Regional Office in Chicago, fielded questions for more than an hour. The Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission hosted the event.

Todd Latham One concern that veterans have is long travel times to get to Veterans Administration hospitals, as explained by Todd Latham, commander of VFW Post 1486 in Sandwich.

Latham said the trip to Hines is an hour and a half one way.

“I found it very difficult to get vets in there to receive their care,” Latham said. “It takes several hours to receive their care, and then drive an hour and a half home. To me, that is unacceptable.”

Latham said a mobile unit in North Aurora is closer, but the care available is limited.

Braverman said Hines was in the process of being upgraded on several levels, from facade improvements – as portions of the brick were falling down – to upgrades to the boiler. It’s also getting a new MRI facility.

“We are committed, as best as we can, to get the services, equipment and facilities for what your service has earned you the right to have,” Hultgren said.

To another question about allowing veterans the right to go to “regular” doctors for care instead of traveling to Hines, Hultgren said he could see the process opened up for them to see any doctor.

“I think there is a big group of us who support that, but not enough,” Hultgren said. “My hope is we will get there … [and] allow our veterans to go where they want to go.”

Tammy Anderson, superintendent of DeKalb County Veterans Assistance, asked what is being done to address notices of disagreement that are Randy filed when veterans’ claims are denied.

Hultgren “If we file a notice of disagreement on a veteran claim, it’s three years,” Anderson said.

“We’re looking at 2020.”

Turner said there is a backlog, and – at the moment – claims from 2014 are currently being dealt with.

“We are trying to address that by modernizing the appeals process,” Turner said. “That is the best answer I can give you.”

Police said they were advised of a reckless driver traveling southbound on Route 47 in the area of Route 34. Police stopped Thomas’s vehicle in the area of Route 47 and Fountainview Drive. As Thomas exited the vehicle, police said they observed “a large unknown bulge... in his basketball shorts concealed in the buttock area.”

New book club aimed at disabled adults

By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com A new reading club is being formed by the Oswego Public Library District for those age 18 and older who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Sarah Skilton, library director, told library trustees at a recent board meeting that the program called the Next Chapter Book Club is a community-based book club for adults with special needs. She said the goal of the program is to provide social connections for readers of all skill levels.

The weekly reading sessions, to be held at both the district’s Oswego and Montgomery campus libraries, will each last one hour and be led by trained library staff members, she said. She said staff members will learn how to work in teams of two to three people. They will receive special training on how to create the clubs and work with the individual club members so the program will be successful.

Skilton said they plan to start with two clubs, one to meet during the day and the other to meet in the evening. If the two clubs are successful, the staff can add more clubs as more people be-

She said each club should have no more eight members in the group. At their meetings, the members usually read a book together and all levels of reading will be able to participate.

More clubs will be started if more people request them, Skilton said.

“The program is adaptable to different age groups and locations,” she added.

Dr. Thomas Fish, founder of the nonprofit program, said it offers community-based book clubs for adolescents and adults with Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and other intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“Our members (including some who cannot read) love books for the same reasons most people do. They

enjoy being transported to different worlds where they meet interesting characters and learn about exciting new things. Taking that journey with a group of friends makes it even more delightful and fun,” Fish said.

The library district will be joining a growing number of organizations, including other public libraries, social service agencies and parent groups – often working in collaboration with each other, he added.

Rachel Jones, founder of a club in Ohio, said most of the people attending the programs didn’t have a lot of positive experiences being in the community when they first joined the club.

“Now they learn about social interactions through the characters and story lines of the books they’re reading and get to practice them with staff, customers and each other. I regularly observe them behaving in a very polite manner,” Jones said.

“The Next Chapter Book Club has clubs in the U.S. as well as other countries and is hoping that one day it would be as widely available as Special Olympics,” Skilton said.

Early voting underway in Kendall County SHAW MEDIA

Early voting for the April 4 election is now underway at the Kendall County Clerk’s Office at 111 W. Fox St. in downtown Yorkville.

Voting and voter registration is available in Room 103 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, and Saturday, April 1.

The last day to cast an early ballot at the clerk’s office will be Monday, April 3, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Voters may also cast early ballots at Plano City Hall in the building and zoning department conference room at 7 N. James St. in Plano, beginning Monday, March 20, through Thursday, March 30. By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com School District 308 Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin confirmed Saturday that a group of teachers and some administrative office staff were laid off Friday.

A source familiar with the situation said approximately 30 elementary school teachers and 15 high school teachers were given layoff notices Friday, and Sparlin confirmed that there were “close” to that many teachers laid off. He also confirmed that some office staff were given layoff notices Friday.

Sparlin said, however, that the action is pending approval by the Board of Education at its March 13 meeting.

The board will vote on resolutions approving the personnel moves, he said.

Board of Education meetings start at 7 p.m. in the community room at Oswego East High School, 1525 Harvey Road in Oswego.

Sparlin said there were several reasons for the move.

Construction to start on new Oswego police station Public invited to groundbreaking ceremony March 23 on Woolley Road site SHAW MEDIA

The village of Oswego will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction on the new village police station at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, at the new building site located at 3355 Woolley Road, immediately east of the Oswego Fire Protection District Station 1.

Village President Gail Johnson, the Board of Trustees, Police Chief Jeff Burgner, members of the police department and village staff will be joined by the building’s design engineers, Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Inc., as well as representatives from the consulting firm of McClaren, Wilson & Lawrie of Wheaton and the construction management company Gilbane Building Company to celebrate the ground breaking.

The site, however, is landlocked and lacks space for the construction of an addition or for the expansion of the building’s parking lot.

No ordinary Jones Senior guard carried young Panthers

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com By now, it’s hard to imagine Oswego basketball without Jaylen Jones.

He was a four-year starting guard. His last high school point was his 1,000th.

How the connection was first made, though, is an interesting story.

Jones moved to Oswego from Minooka the summer before his freshman year, and played all summer with the sophomore team. The last day of summer basketball, his parents drove Jones to Illinois Wesleyan to watch his older brother play with the varsity.

“I was just going to watch. They went 0-4 the first day and a lot of the guys were injured,” Jones said. “Coach saw me on the sidelines wearing sweats and he asked if I had shorts on underneath them. I said yes and he asked me if I wanted to play.”

don’t know many kids who would jump right in there. We knew right then he’d be a four-year player.”

The rest, yes, is history.

A four-year varsity starter, Jones finished his career in spectacular fashion.

The 5-foot-10, 153-pound point guard carried a young Oswego team that played three sophomores and a freshmen.

He averaged an area-best 18.3 points, led Oswego in assists (2.5 per game) and steals (1.8) and hit 70 3-pointers. In conference games, Jones even led the Panthers in rebounds.

For these efforts, Jaylen Jones is the Ledger/Record Newspapers All-Area Player of the Year.

“We kind of went as he went,” Borrowman said. “We knew with what we had graduating that he would have to have a big senior year for us. He had some monster games. He’s had a remarkable four years, and he’s been through a lot.”

Elijah Maisonet, Plano, senior, forward: Returning all-conference player, a tight end in football, helped lead Reapers to second straight Class 3A regional title and conference championship. Maisonet was averaging 11.9 points and 5.6 rebounds, both second on Plano, going into sectionals.

Cameron Myre, Newark, senior, forward: This 6-foot-7 wing had 11-inch growth spurt in high school, but kept shooting skills. Myre was averaging 13.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.0 blocks going into this week’s supersectional. He’s hit 60 3-pointers at a 38 percent rate.

Tahj Oliver, Oswego East, senior, guard: Committed to St. Xavier for football, Oliver came on strong in the second half of the season for 15-12 Wolves. He led Oswego East in scoring with 12.6 points per game, averaged 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists and had 39 steals.

This year, though, he shot them at a 35 percent clip. In a win over Oswego East he hit seven 3-pointers in scoring a career-high 36 points.

He’s never afraid to let it fly, either.

“He’s one of those kids that you have to live with some of the shots he takes,” Borrowman said. “He takes some wild shots, but when you’ve been around the kid for four years you know he’s going to make a lot of them.”

Jones will be missed, for sure.

Borrowman estimated that he’s received about 20 emails from teachers telling him how much they love Jones.

His son adores him. It isn’t uncommon for Jones to slap a mere acquaintance friendly on the back in conversation like they’re old friends.

A student with a 3.2 GPA, Jones is leaning toward following ex-teammate Malique Ross to Rock Valley College.

Brown University, though, has showed interest of late.

“He’s just a genuine young man,” Borrowman said. “Selfishly, my family wants him to go to college close by. He is a great kid, a great kid to be around.”

Huge then, to have him healthy this year on a team that had graduated 10 players.

“It reminded me of my freshman year how we were so young,” Jones said. “I looked up to those older players.

That’s what I wanted to do, was make a good impact on them.”

Being the elder statesman was an unusual position for Jones, the youngest of five brothers. His game was steeled in driveway battles.

“Me being the youngest, the only way I got the ball was sneaking up from behind and stealing the ball,” Jones joked.

Jones is small in stature, but don’t be fooled. He bench presses 225 pounds and squats 365.

“He’s one of the strongest kids we’ve ever had,” Borrowman said.

Taylor Neville is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

The daughter of Anne and Patrick Neville, Taylor will study Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin--Plattville in the Fall.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Responsibility is a word Taylor Neville knows well. The YHS senior is involved in more than a dozen activities and programs hosted through her school and community, and spends hours upon hours every week meeting her obligations as a teammate and leader.

“Keeping myself so busy has forced me to be responsible for my time management, punctuality, accountability and self-motivation,” Taylor said.

Taylor has played travel softball for 12 years, and been a member of the high school softball team for three years. Off the field, you’ll find her singing as a member of the Madrigal and Varsity choirs, or practicing Tae Kwon Do, which she has earned a black belt in. She’s been a member of the Speech Team, and been named Most Valuable Supporting Actress for the school’s Fall play. Taylor has also participated in the Spring musicals and has taken five years of voice lessons outside of school.

Through each of these activities, Taylor said she got “a good look at the real world and exposure to a competitive lifestyle,” that she hopes will help her in her college pursuits.

“If you want something, you have to get up and get it for yourself,” she said.

Taylor has spent many of her high school days helping others through her work at the Kendall County Food Pantry, Feed My Starving Children and helping the homeless at Hesed House. “(Poverty) is a real problem that not many people are aware of until they are in the moment seeing how thankful someone is for a new pair of shoes, or a meal for their family for one night,” she said. “Experiencing this first-hand has really motivated me to work extremely hard in school and at work so I can help pave my future path.”

And, paving her path is exactly what she’s doing.

In her second year working at Raging Waves Waterpark in Yorkville, Taylor was promoted to a 17-year-old supervisor, in charge of food kiosks across the park.

“This will help me with my future schooling and career because I know how to work under pressure and take the initiative to get the job done,” she said.

Will Clausel, Newark, senior, guard: Fouryear starter has played for three sectional champions and is the eighth Newark player to reach 1,500 career points. Clausel was averaging team-best 15.5 points, 5.5 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals going into this week’s supersectional for the 27-4 Little Ten champions.

Stephon Harris, Oswego East, senior, forward: Rugged post was second on Wolves in scoring at 12.0 points a game, and led in rebounds with 9.3. Harris, an all-conference pick, also averaged 2.4 assists and had 27 steals and 19 blocks for the season.

Jaylen Jones, Oswego, senior, guard: Four-year varsity starter overcame injury-plagued last two years to enjoy sensational senior season to finish with 1,000 career points. Jones, an all-Southwest Prairie Conference pick, led area in scoring with 18.3 points a game, hit 70 3-pointers and averaged 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals.

Nathan Shead, Plano, senior, guard: After a year at East Aurora, Shead returned to lead 23-6 Reapers to Interstate Eight regular-season and conference championships and a Class 3A regional. Shead is averaging teambest 16.4 points as well as 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists going into this week’s sectionals.

Jackson Smith, Sandwich, senior, guard: Three-year varsity player finished with 996 career points. Smith, a first team all-Interstate Eight Conference pick, averaged 16 points, six rebounds and three assists and shot 35 percent from 3-point range for 15-13 Indians.

Maisonet plays everywhere for Plano, scores 38 points in two regional games

His first sport was baseball. His future figures to be in football, where the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Plano senior holds a scholarship offer from Valparaiso.

On the basketball court, Maisonet seamlessly moves from the post to the perimeter.

“I’m more of an inside/outside player,” Maisonet said. “When I start getting it going inside, that’s when I can stretch it out.”

Maisonet was putting it all out last week.

He had 24 points, four rebounds and four assists to help Plano hold off Kankakee 65-61 in a regional semifinal. Maisonet followed that up with 14 points and six rebounds in a 56-35 win over Herscher, helping Plano clinch its second straight Class 3A regional championship.

For his efforts, Elijah Maisonet is the Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week.

Plano coach Kyle Kee is used to getting a little bit of everything from Maisonet, a two-time all-conference player.

Maisonet is averaging 11.9 points and 5.6 rebounds, both second on the team, while shooting 44.2 percent in 29 games – 27 of them starts.

“He’s done everything that we need him to do,” Kee said. “He hits the big 3, he grabs the big rebound, he gets in the open floor. He can score in so many different ways when he is under control.

He has great touch around the basket and he’s such a tough matchup.”

Maisonet played primarily the post for Plano as a junior. Most of his offense came from the short corner or high

Maisonet struggled in Plano’s last regular season game, scoring just two points in a win at Sandwich. That didn’t last.

“I had a rough game. I knew I had to step up for my teammates,” Maisonet said. “My teammates were finding me open, and [Kankakee] was leaving me open down low a lot. They were giving me open lanes to the basket and I was just finishing.”

Maisonet, yet uncommitted for college, thinks skills transfer from the football field to the basketball court.

“They actually transfer over quite a bit,” Maisonet said. “What I have to do as a tight end is be physical. That’s one of my jobs on this basketball team is I have to guard people and shut them down.”

He’s a tough matchup, regardless of where Plano puts him on the floor.

“He has the quickness to get around bigger guys with size, and the quicker guys he can take in the post,” Kee said.

“With his elevation, at 6-2 when he used his athleticism he can get up and dunk it.”

One last playoff run means a lot to Maisonet. He’s played together with most of his teammates since the fourth grade. He noted that the chemistry “is insane.”

A nice feed inside from Clausel to Beau Brown for an easy score got things going with 2:40 left, giving Newark a 45-40 lead.

“It was a tough game, but we made some big plays,” Brown said.

The Eagles got a pair of free throws, but Patrick countered by making four in a row over a 14-second stretch to give the Norsemen a 49-42 lead with 1:44 left.

“Dylan made his free throws, which was huge,” Tollefson said.“I think that making our free throws and holding them to only one shot while getting the rebound was big. That was the difference in the fourth quarter for us. You have to do that in big games like this.”

Clausel added 14 points for the Norsemen while Brown and Cameron Myre each chipped in with seven points apiece.

“Everybody did what they had to do,” Clausel said. “So many guys came up and made big shots or grabbed a rebound or made a defensive stop. It was a whole team effort.”

Dylan Patrick wants the ball in his hands, especially late in games.

His Newark teammates made sure he was the recipient during the final two minutes of Friday’s Class 1A Somonauk Sectional championship, and Patrick made sure he delivered at the free throw line to help the Norsemen hold on for a thrilling 53-47 victory over Aurora Christian.

Patrick made all nine of his freethrow attempts in a jam-packed gym with a raucous crowd and led the Norsemen with 18 points.

Patrick, a junior guard, was clutch all week at the line for Newark. He made nine of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter of the Norsemen’s sectional semifinal win.

“I told my teammates to get me the ball in the end because I’ve got this,” he said. “I’ll make the free throws. I tell them every time. That helped us pull away. What an awesome game for us.”

The game featured six ties and seven lead changes.

Newark (27-4) took the lead for good late in the third quarter. Will Clausel hit a jumper, and Steve McGrath a free throw to nudge the Norsemen ahead 38-36.

“We got a little rattled when they went up by seven so coach had to calm us down and after that we felt pretty good,” Clausel said. “Dylan played really well. He couldn’t miss his free throws and really bailed us out. We’ve been through this before and Dylan really came through when we needed him.”

Aurora Christian (21-9) relied heavily on 3-pointers. While the Eagles drained eight of them compared to just two by the Norsemen, they also missed far too many of them.

A hand in their face certainly made things difficult.

“Even with someone in their face they still made some of them.

They’re just great shooters,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said.

“We’ve seen them get really hot and knock teams out. I thought we did a nice of getting a hand in their face and contesting them though.”

LEADING THE WAY Newark’s Steve McGrath keys smothering defensive effort in supersectional

Steve McGrath was the right man for the job.

Colfax Ridgeview came in with the state’s No. 1 ranking, Tyler McCormick the reputation. Ridgeview’s star hit seven of his team’s 12 3-pointers in a sectional final Friday.

It was nothing that Newark’s ace defender couldn’t handle.

“Steve is just outstanding, energy-plus. He’s the best defender I’ve ever coached,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said of his 6-foot senior guard. “I don’t know if McCormick had ever had a guy guard him like that.”

Indeed.

For four quarters Tuesday McGrath chased McCormick, and frustrated him. The rare times McCormick found room, a second Newark defender stepped up to close the space.

Newark, ranked No. 5 in the state, held Ridgeview to a stunning two points in the third quarter and rode that to a 43-32 win in the Class 1A Illinois State Supersectional at Normal’s Redbird Arena.

The Norsemen (28-4) advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since winning the 2011 title. They’ll play Okawville at 12:45 p.m. Friday in Peoria.

“I followed that 2011 team a lot, and that was special,” said Newark senior guard Will Clausel, who had a teamhigh 12 points and five assists.

Newark was no stranger to Tuesday’s setting. The Norsemen were playing in their sixth supersectional since 2009, but it’s been a stubborn nut to crack. Other than 2011, Newark was winless in its four other tries.

For a half Tuesday, it looked like it could be more of the same. Ridgeview (30-2), which came in on a 16-game win streak, led 20-17.

“It was one of those deer in the headlights looks. I think everybody here could tell that we were tentative,” Tollefson said.

“I told the kids we had to either ratchet it up or we were going home.”

The Norsemen got the message.

Cameron Myre, who had 11 points and seven rebounds, sank a baseline jumper 14 seconds into the third quarter.

McGrath, who had 10 points, followed with an acrobatic baseline drive and reverse layup in transition to give Newark a 21-20 lead.

Myre hit another jumper to give Newark the lead for good, 24-22, and McGrath followed with a steal and a score.

Stunningly, Ridgeview scored just two points over the first 10 minutes-plus of the second half. By the time Myre

Ridgeview shot just 31.7 percent (13-for-41) for the game, 3-for-17 on 3s.

“Our defense in the second half was the game-changer,” Tollefson said.

McGrath sure was.

Newark started out in its zone, but switched to man-toman midway through the first quarter and stuck McGrath on McCormick.

Ridgeview’s 5-foot-9 guard scored just five points on 2-for13 shooting from the field, 1-for8 on 3-pointers. He went score-

less in the second half.

“I knew he was a good shooter – they ran him a lot going side to side,” McGrath said.

“I didn’t help off him much. I tried to stay with him because I knew he had a good shot.”

McGrath clearly wore on him.

In the fourth quarter McCormick was fouled on a 3-pointer, but missed all three shots. Next time down, McCormick airballed a 3-point attempt.

“That’s what Steve does,” Clausel said. “Steve’s the best defender we got and he showed why. I don’t think [McCormick]

got a shot off and when he did it was challenged.”

For Clausel and the rest of Newark’s players, Tuesday was redemption a year in the making.

Some thought the Norsemen were among the best in 1A last year, but they lost to LeRoy in the supersectional. Clausel’s older brother Jack, a senior on that team, was in the first row at Redbird Tuesday.

“We thought we were going to make a run last year and it cut short,” Clausel said. “Us seniors, we weren’t ready for it to end.”
