Gets court supervision for incident where she struck colleague at bar

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson pleaded guilty to battery and was sentenced to court supervision Monday afternoon.

Ingemunson was alleged to have struck an employee of hers during a holiday celebration Dec. 21 at a Yorkville bar. The employee is the current wife of Ingemunson’s ex-husband.

DeKalb County Judge William Brady, who was hearing the case in lieu of a Kendall County judge at the request of Kendall County Presiding Judge Timothy McCann, sentenced Ingemunson to 18 months of court supervision along with a $300 fine and $192 in court costs.

The plea, known as a “blind plea,” was given after Brady, Kendall County Assistant State’s Attorney Ryan Phelps and Ingemunson’s attorney,

Lisa Accardi of Oswego, held a conference without Ingemunson. Ingemunson then joined Accardi and Phelps in a separate conference before agreeing before the judge on the plea.

Phelps had asked Brady to require Ingemunson undertake a drug and alcohol evaluation, due to the alleged use of alcohol during the battery incident, and perform 30 hours of community service work. Phelps said Ingemunson told law enforcement that she had “consumed too much alcohol” and that if “she had been sober, the inRobyn Ingemunson cident would not have taken place.”

However, Accardi objected to the alcohol evaluation, stating that alcohol was not a factor in the incident and that there is not a history of alcohol abuse. She said it was an “isolated incident” and a “family matter.”

Brady agreed with Accardi and said there was no proof that Ingemunson was intoxicated at the time and no witnesses to attest to that.

Phelps also wanted Ingemunson to be required to perform 30 hours of community service work, related to an

alleged violation of her bond that occurred when she traveled to Wisconsin recently with her children and texted back and forth with her ex-husband about the incident. State’s Attorney Eric Weis had filed a motion to either increase or revoke her bond. Phelps had also asked that there be a restriction on no “hostile” or “offensive” contact by Ingemunson with the victim during the supervision period.

However, Accardi argued that it was her ex-husband who initiated the conversation, and that the parties have had contact and will continue to have contact regarding the shared custody of their children and other matters. She reminded the judge that Ingemunson and the alleged victim still work in the same office, and that the victim recently dropped the kids off at Ingemunson’s house.

Brady said the travel out of state was not an “aggravating factor” in deciding the sentence, and that restricting communication that was considered hostile would be “difficult to enforce.”

Ingemunson is set to appear before Brady again at 9 a.m. Aug. 28 at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore.

Early voting for April election underway in Kendall County SHAW MEDIA Early voting for the April 4 election is now underway at the Kendall County Clerk’s Office at 111 W. Fox St. in downtown Yorkville.

Voting and voter registration is available in Room 103 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, and Saturday, April 1.

The last day to cast an early ballot at the clerk’s office will be Monday, April 3, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Early voting will also be available at Oswego Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill in Oswego, beginning on Monday, March 20, through Thursday, March 30.

Early voting hours will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with the exception of Satur-

day, March 25, when early voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Early voting will not be available at Oswego Village Hall on Sunday, March 26.

Voters may also cast early ballots at Plano City Hall in the building and zoning department conference room at 7 N. James St. in Plano, beginning Monday, March 20, through Thursday, March 30.

Voting hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m. daily, with the exception of Saturday, March 25, when early voting will be offered from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Early voting will not be available on Sunday, March 26, at Plano City Hall.

City of Aurora residents living in the Kendall County portion of the city cast ballots through the Aurora Election Commission.

The Yorkville School District has scheduled parent information and kindergarten registration events for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 7 and 8, at Yorkville High School, 797 Game Farm Road.

The “Welcome Class of 2030 to Yorkville Schools” events will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and child care will be available.

During the sessions, school district officials will present information on curriculum, registration, immunizations, transportation, day care options, dual language/English Learners, and answer questions about specific district schools.

Limited snow in winter not a problem for crops, plants

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County may have not seen much white stuff on the ground this winter, but there’s plenty of water for growing crops and there won’t be much of an effect on flowers and other plants, local experts say.

Dan Reedy, manager of the Kendall County Farm Bureau in Yorkville, said there has been enough rain to sustain moisture in the ground for growing crops in the summer despite the lack of snow this winter.

“Even though we did not have snow, we had plenty of rain during the month of January and into February to not have any concerns at this point that we do not have subsoil moisture,” he said. “At the times when it rained, even back in January, the ground was not as frozen as what you’d normally “With the good think at that point in weather we’ve had time. It’s like they’re a periscope deciding whether they want to continue or not. With that extra layer of leaves to get to the surface now they have to go farther. Hentschel said the flower bulbs are “only responding to their environment” and “that’s pretty typical.”

“We have very early spring bulbs, snowdrops and other early spring bulbs, I’ve seen them in bloom with snow on them,” he said. “So those very early guys are going to be up anyway, and perhaps this year earlier.

But they are responding to the environment.”

Hentschel said flowers will bloom as usual in the spring.

“If we had a turn of cold weather and the top of what’s out of the ground froze, the flower for that bulb is still down in the ground, inside the bulb,” he said. “So we’re still going to get the flower show. We may have leaves that are fried at the top, burnt, and

the rest of the leaves will come out later and then the blooms will come out. So I’m really not expecting tragedy.”

He said, however, that the trees might be affected from the longer fall temperatures.

“There is a bit of a concern there because normally in fall the temperatures progressively get colder and that’s a signal to the plant, hey, it’s time to go to sleep,” he said. “With the long protracted fall, there are a variety of trees that, if they were down in Southern Illinois they’d be growing. They get shut off by the stimuli of cold weather and things here. So that did not happen and that’s why all those leaves hung on as long as they did and finally came down after our first heavy snow.”

He continued, “If those buds and associated growth with those leaves, especially toward the tip, did not get hardened off in time, because of the long fall, then we would expect to see bud death, twig dieback, winter kill in other words. And on trees and plants that are not truly zone hardy up here, that can happen anyway. But I think that potential is certainly there.”

Time for Hultgren to hold a town hall U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, has been making the rounds in his district in recent weeks. The congressman recently toured the Aurora Specialty Textiles plant in Yorkville and Friday, Hultgren will join a forum on veterans issue at the American Legion Fox River in Geneva hosted by the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission.

Hultgren, however, has yet to schedule a general town hall meeting or meetings with his constituents since the swearing-in of President Donald Trump on Jan. 20 in Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, his constituents appear very interested in meeting with their congressman.

In late January, dozens of people converged on Hultgren’s office at the Fox Mill Professional Centre in Campton Hills in Kane County. The group sought to talk to Hultgren’s staff members and to request a public meeting with their congressman. But Hult-

With the new president signing executive orders on immigration, the environment and a host of other issues, and Congress moving ahead with efforts to repeal and apparently replace the Affordable Care Act, it’s understandable that Hultgren’s constituents would be interested – if not extremely wary – as to

what is happening in Washington, D.C. We give Hultgren high marks for his efforts since his election to Congress in reaching out to his constituents. We’ve covered his prior town hall meetings, his numerous appearances at meetings with Kendall County and other local governmental officials, and visits to area businesses. In every appearance Hultgren has shown a keen interest and a willingness to listen to local concerns.

Yes, the political winds have shifted dramatically over the past few months and any Hultgren-hosted town hall meetings are more than likely to prove contentious affairs. But given the significance of the issues that the new administration and Congress are dealing with and their direct impact on people’s lives and pocketbooks, it is imperative that their elected public servant – Hultgren – hear their concerns in a public forum.

Three Kendall County women ahead of their time You must admit that the role of women in society has certainly evolved for the better during the past century and a half.

In the 19th century, women were still legally considered the property of, first, their fathers and later their husbands. Denied the right to vote, they were likewise often denied the right to manage their own affairs.

It took women of unusually strong drive and personality to fight their way out of the boxes in which society insisted they belonged. But there actually were some strong female personalities, women who proved they could do the same jobs men traditionally held if they could only get the chance to do so.

Three of those strong female personalities were born here in Kendall County. Sadly, two of them were forced to carry on some of their most important activities in secret while the other apparently denied herself the fulfillment most women today take for granted.

Emily Murdock was born into an influential Oswego family in 1853.

Mary Rippon was born near Lisbon Center in Lisbon Township in 1850.

And Sarah Raymond was born in 1842, also in Lisbon Township.

Of the three, two became respected educators, while the other became a mystery novelist, all during a period that frowned upon their career choices.

Emily Murdock’s father, Charles, was a justice of the peace and prominent Republican official in Oswego.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Her brother, Alfred X. Murdock, was a lively young man who marched off to fight in the Civil War with his comrades in the 127th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Unfortunately, Alfred was killed at the Battle of Ezra Church outside Atlanta. For her part, Emily followed tradition, reportedly marrying Lawrence L. Lynch, a traveling sales representative, when she came of age. Local news accounts report that Emily traveled with Lawrence until he apparently died a few years after their marriage.

Emily returned to Oswego and married Dr. Abraham Van Deventer, a prominent local physician, becoming one of the community’s leaders. But her friends in Oswego had little idea that Emily Murdock Van Deventer led a secret life – she was a successful mystery novelist, a field then almost solely the purview of men. Realizing her chances for success were slim under her own name, Emily instead chose a man’s pen name. And for that name she picked “Lawrence L. Lynch,” the name of her first husband. In order to be successful at her chosen field, then, Emily had to pretend – in print at least – to be a man.

Sarah Raymond was born in Lisbon Township in 1842 and was educated in her local one-room school. She was

FORUM To the Editor: Fern Dell Historic Association directors would like to thank everyone who supported the 32nd annual kumla dinner and silent auction. We could not have asked for a nicer day than 60 degrees on Feb. 18.

A huge thank you to all the businesses and individuals who sponsored the ham and potatoes and provided items for the silent auction, also to the many people who baked cakes. A lot of members and friends of Fern Dell helped by coming to peel potatoes, cut up and cook the hams, mix, stir and ready the kumla for cooking. It takes a whole kitchen full of strong people to cook kumla for 500 people.

We especially thank the Newark FFA students and their teacher, along with Scout Troop 45 and their leaders and families. They did an excellent job of serving beverages, helping people with their trays, and clearing tables.

Volunteers directed the dining room, served the meal, cleaned the tables and washed pots and pans until well after everyone was finished eating. The ticket takers and silent auction people were kept very busy, too. We want to thank everyone who helped in any way to experience an excellent fundraiser for Fern Dell. We also thank all the hungry people who came to eat and bid on the silent auction items. The museum also had a nice number of visitors that evening.

dominant presence in the state and I’ve never seen reference to a single Republican in a position of authority. The state legislature has been under liberal control, holding the speaker position and super majority of representatives for much of the past 30-plus years. I was talking politics with a liberal one time and mentioned how the state was in dire financial shape. She said (can you believe this?!) “What about the Republicans?”

I said “You can’t hold someone responsible when they don’t have any power”.

So, how have the liberals been doing for the people of Illinois all these years of passing legislation, negotiating contracts, and managing departments? Despite having some of the highest tax rates in the country.

It is apparent, at least to me, that they have done a horrible job. For example, the state has over $150 billion in debt. Illinois lost more residents in 2016 than any other state (when people leave, that is not a good sign). The murder rate in Chicago last year rose to the highest rate since 1996. To the Editor: March 1 marks the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period preceding Easter, when many Christians abstain from animal foods in remembrance of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness before launching his ministry.

The call to refrain from eating animals is as old as the Bible. In Genesis 1:29, God commands humans to eat only plants; then Prophet Isaiah predicts that “none will hurt or destroy on God’s holy mountain.”

A number of Christian leaders have followed the call, including Methodist founder John Wesley, Salvation Army founders William and Catherine Booth, Seventh-day Adventist Church founder Ellen G. White, and prominent evangelical leader Franklin Graham.

A meat-free diet is not just about Christian devotion. Dozens of medical studies have linked consumption of animal products with elevated risk of heart failure, stroke, cancer and other killer diseases.

A United Nations report named meat production as the largest source of greenhouse gases and water pollution. Undercover investigations have documented farm animals being caged, crowded, mutilated, beaten and shocked.

Yorkville man facing weapon, assault charges Montgomery police arrested a Yorkville resident, Raymond G. Gunderman, 48, of the 6000 block of Polo Club Drive on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, disorderly conduct and aggravated assault following an incident on Hill Avenue at Route 34 Feb. 22 at 5:06 p.m.

Police said the victims told them that a man stopped on the passenger side of their vehicle and used a racial slur towards them be-

fore pointing a gun at them and driving away.

The victims gave police a description of the person and a license plate Raymond G. number. Police said Gunderman that Oswego police officers later located Gunderman in Oswego. Police said the victims identified Gunderman as the suspect and a gun was retrieved from the inside of his vehicle.

Plano man faces DUI, other charges in crash SHAW MEDIA County sheriff’s deputies arrested Demetrius Peterson, 23, of Plano, after the vehicle he was driving left the roadway at 4:10 p.m. Feb. 22 in the area of River Road and Blackhawk Road near Plano and crashed into a utility pole.

Police said Peterson fled the crash scene but was soon apprehended by sheriff’s deputies assisted by Plano police, Conservation Police and the Kendall County Criminal Intelligence Team.

Little Rock-Fox Fire Protection District paramedics transported

Peterson to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police said Peterson became combative with the officers and paramedics on the way to the hospital.

After being treated at the hospital, Peterson was transported to the Kendall County Jail, where he was released after posting bond.

Police said Peterson has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery (both Class 3 felonies) and possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony.

In addition, he has been charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.

The Yorkville Area Chamber of Commerce Woman 2 Woman will host their monthly luncheon Tuesday, March 14, at Kennedy Pointe Restaurant and Pub in Bristol. The luncheon program this month is “Millennials and Beyond: Tips for managing your future workforce,” with guest speaker Harriett Parker.

Parker will focus her talk on understanding the dynamics of Harriet the growing millennial Parker workforce.

Parker, from Waubonsee Community College Workforce Development, will share seven tips for building a more dedicated workforce and ways to protect your best asset: your people.

Parker sells Customize Business Training for Waubonsee Community College’s Workforce Development division. Prior to that, she served as manager of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee for 10 years. Parker has more than 30 years experience managing successful startup businesses, where she played a key

role designing and marketing software products that are in use nationwide today. In addition to her role at Waubonsee, she is co-owner of HubTack, Inc., a web-based business serving land surveyors and engineers. Parker actively supports the local business community through her involvement on numerous boards and committees.

Kennedy Road resurfacing part of county-city pact

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council and Kendall County Board have approved a pact that will result in a portion of Kennedy Road being resurfaced soon.

Aldermen voted unanimously in favor of the agreement Tuesday evening. The County Board unanimously approved the agreement at its Feb. 21 meeting.

Kendall County will be reconstructing the bridge over Blackberry Creek on Galena Road west of Kennedy Road from late spring to early fall 2018, County Engineer Fran Klaas told the County Board at its meeting. As a result, the county plans to direct motorists to use Kennedy Road and Bristol Ridge Road as a detour during that project, as Galena Road will be closed.

The detour route would be approximately 7,400 feet of Kennedy Road between Galena Road and Bristol Ridge Road, according to a memo to aldermen

The entire Kennedy Road project is estimated to cost $601,500, according to Willret. Of that money, $441,500 has been budgeted. The county has agreed to reimburse the city $160,000 as part of the agreement, according to Willret.

The agreement calls for the city to complete the project no later than May 15, 2018. According to Willret’s memo, in order to meet that deadline the city will go out for bid on the project in early May and be ready for construction this June. Her memo states that the project will extend the life of that portion of Kennedy Road by 10 years.

Klaas told the County Board that while Galena Road typically sees 7,000 vehicles a day, he expects one-half to one-third of that amount to use the Kennedy Road detour during the project.

“I know the detour’s gonna tick a lot of people off, but I am so excited for this project because Kennedy Road is horrible,” Alderman Joel Frieders said.

The Yorkville City Council unanimously approved plans and a change to an annexation agreement Tuesday evening for a new assisted living facility at Route 34 and Cannonball Trail.

The two-story, 73-unit Cedarhurst of Yorkville development will be an assisted living facility and memory care center, planned for the northeast corner of Route 34 and Cannonball Trail.

The 65,000-square-foot building is set on a 6.7-acre property that also could include a medical office building in the near future. Developers of the project

are aiming for an April 1 groundbreaking and a spring 2018 opening.

Jordan D. Dorsey of Dover Development told the City Council at its Feb. 14 meeting that it would employ 30 to 40 people.

Alderman Chris Funkhouser had argued that the development should have signs that are smaller than the proposed size of 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide, but a motion to enforce that change failed in a 4-3 vote. Funkhouser and aldermen Jackie Milschewski and Seaver Tarulis voted in favor of the change, while aldermen Joel Frieders, Ken Koch, Diane Teeling and Carlo Colosimo voted against it.

By ERIKA WURST news@kendallcountynow.com With the school year more than halfway through, the Yorkville Community Unit School District is reflecting on student progress and working to ensure all students are meeting their goals come the year’s end.

At a Board of Education meeting Monday evening, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Nick Baughman presented the district’s K-8 mid-year student achievement data report, citing the results as a way to see where more focus should be directed.

In December, students in grades K-8 participated in MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing. The test’s goal is to show student’s academic growth.

According to the results, the district as a whole has shown expected growth in the categories of math, reading and overall testing.

A total of 69 percent of kindergarten through eighth-grade students achieved proficiency in reading and math combined, according to ISAT benchmarks.

This is the same percentage as those showing proficiency in both subjects during the 2015-16 school year.

While the district’s overall percentages showed expected growth, there were schools, grades and subgroups that showed a need for improvement.

When it comes to reading, all grade levels are achieving expected growth, except grade 3, which is achieving lower than expected growth.

Math, however, is showing more grade levels falling behind.

We’re ready to make adjustments midcourse to make sure we’re maximizing student achievement...Some buildings require us to further analyze what’s going on so we can be as supportive as we can.”

Baughman noted that none of the statistics “stick out,” but “it’s just noteworthy for us to pay attention to the numbers and dig deeper.”

He said he had an opportunity to visit each of the K-8 schools, and said administrators were aware of their data results.

“We felt overwhelmingly that all the buildings knew their data very well and will be adjusting action plans to implement in real time between now and the end-of-the-year assessment period,” Baughman said.

As far as interventions are concerned, Baughman said grade level teams will use data to adjust instructional groups, and additional time will be made for students to practice deficit skills.

Mathematics instruction will include K-8 Title 1 mathematics interventionists, as well as a committee that will research guided mathematics practices and develop a guided mathematics instructional framework. Teachers on Special Assignment (TOSA) will also offer instructional coaching to teachers.

“We wanted to stay here [in Yorkville] and you plan accordingly and you end up having to maybe put things together that don’t make for the most efficient flow of things,” he said. “The process can get a little bit hamstrung. We’ve done well, but as we grow we just needed to have more room and do it more efficiently than we’re doing it now. This will allow for that and we’re excited about it.”

In recent years, the company has provided mixes for two family-owned frozen custard companies that are growing, Steinwart said.

“We’ve realized most of our growth in the frozen custard side of things,” he said. “We’ve partnered up with a couple of growing frozen custard chains, one based out of Wichita, Kansas, and another based out of Springfield, Missouri. They’ve both done quite well and we’re blessed to be a part of that growth. That’s been the impetus for a lot of our growth and for our move.”

Piper Buyansky is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

The daughter of Pamela and Steve Buyansky, Piper will attend an undecided university in the fall to become a veterinarian.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors It would be safe to say that YHS Senior Piper Buyansky has sacrificed a lot during her four years as a Yorkville Fox, but she certainly doesn’t see it that way.

“I would not say that I have had to sacrifice anything for these activities because I enjoy each of them and am willing to participate in any way possible,” the band and track stand-out said.

A company known for its ice cream mixes is moving to Sandwich after 45 years in Yorkville.

Steve Steinwart, president of Meadowvale Inc., said the company found a property at 1305 E. 6th St. in Sandwich that will give it room for future growth.

“We hope to be in by December,” he said. “We’re in the process of getting our bids in. Once that process is complete, we’ll select a general contractor and get moving. It’s a rather aggressive timeframe but that’s what we’ve got ahead of us.”

The company was founded by Steinwart’s uncle, John Steinwart, in 1967 in Joliet. John Steinwart moved the company to Yorkville, locating in the Fox Industrial Park. The company, one of the first to locate in the industrial park, has been at that location ever since. Steve Steinwart became president of the company in 1993.

“We’re going to have quite a bit more space over there,” Steinwart said. “We’ve got: A. more land and B. just more space under roof.”

Steinwart said the company’s current space in Yorkville is around 30,000 square feet. The new main building at the Sandwich location is 80,000 square feet and Steinwart estimates the company will use two-thirds of it initially.

Plans in works for downtown development in Oswego

By STEVEN JACK news@kendallcountynow.com Oswego is less than two weeks away from learning of two new developments that will help change the face of the village’s downtown.

Village President Gail Johnson gave her State of the Village address Feb. 22 at the newly renovated Kendall 11 movie theaters, and during her presentation said she was “sworn to secrecy” over plans for downtown redevelopment.

However, in a follow-up interview later that evening, Johnson revealed the village is in the final stages of negotiations for a large-scale development on the former Alexander Lumber site on Adams Street and a separate development on the former Village Hall lot on Main Street.

“I don’t want to jeopardize these plans, so there isn’t too much more that I can say. We should be ready to make an announcement after our next Village Board meeting on March 7,” Johnson said.

The developments are proposed by two separate developers. Johnson said work on the former Village Hall lot adjacent to the Dairy Hut should begin quickly. Because of its complexity, the Alexander Lumber lot project will take much longer “to get shovels in the ground,” she said.

During her address Johnson credited the surge in downtown development to the September 2016 creation of a downtown tax increment financing (TIF) district. She said the village began receiving inquiries from develop-

ers “almost immediately” after the TIF district was passed.

A TIF district encourages redevelopment in blighted or underdeveloped areas by using future property taxes resulting from new construction or capital improvements. Property taxes generated prior to the creation of the TIF district – the base level – continue to be distributed to local taxing bodies at the same amount.

The gradual growth in tax revenue above the base level – the increment – is used for redevelopment as property values rise. TIF funds may repay borrowing done by the municipality to finance redevelopment within the district, or they may finance improvements only as new revenue is generated.

To quicken the pace of development on the Alexander lot, the village bought the land in December for $1.49 million.

“I think it’s important for people to know that when the village purchased that property that we were already in talks with developers,” she said. “There was a plan in place.”

During her State of the Village address, Johnson also revealed the creation of an entrepreneurship and co-working partnership between the village and the Oswego Public Library District titled “OsWeGrow.”

Golinski honored with Scout leader award KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Two local area Boy Scout leaders were honored recently by being awarded the District Award of Merit for their outstanding and noteworthy service to youth in Scouting or outside Scouting.

Bruce Aderman of St. Charles, and Gary Golinski of Yorkville, were each awarded the Maramech Hill District Award of Merit at a ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 26. The ceremony was part of the annual dinner held to honor Scout leaders in the Kendall County and surrounding area. The dinner was held in Yorkville.

Aderman is presently serving as Chartered Organization Representative and Committee Chair for Venturing Crew 0413 in Elburn. He was previously Committee Chair for Troop 7 in Elburn, and was awarded the Boy Scout Leader’s Training Award.

Aderman has served as a merit badge counselor, helped with fund rais-

ers, and attended many High Adventure trips to Philmont Scout ranch in New Mexico and Sea Base in Florida.

He is a member, and has been on numerous committees, of St. Gall Catholic Church in Elburn.

Golinski is presently serving as Maramech Hill District Chair, and Scoutmaster of Troop 40 in Yorkville.

Previously he has served as Troop 40 Committee Chairman. As a youth he earned the rank of Eagle.

Golinski is a member of the Three Fires Council Executive Board, and currently serves as Mayor of Yorkville.

He has coached youth baseball for the last 12 years, and is a member of the Yorkville Moose Lodge, Sons of the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge.

Yorkville Cub Scout Pack 350 Den 9 Tigers recently visited Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Public Safety Center with Assistant Den Leader David Berault. Pack 350 is part of the Boys Scouts of America. The program prepares young boys (kindergarten to fifth grade) to make sound choices over their lifetime, to respect others, to learn lifetime skills and to care for our world’s natural resources through fun activities which include: service projects, hikes, campouts, outings, and attend pack and den meetings.

While at the public safety center, the pack was trained on bicycle safety and

safety gear with Deputy Collins. The Pack was introduced to K9s Luke and Miko, along with their handlers Deputy Decamp and Deputy Larsen. This is part of the Pack 350 Den 9 training to receive their Rolling Tigers training.

Sheriff Dwight Baird spoke about his position as a Sheriff and what Sheriffs are elected to do.

‘We want a town hall,’ Hultgren is told Protesters gather at congressman’s office

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Cloudy skies, blustery wind and a cold drizzle were no deterrent as approximately 100 people protested outside the Campton Hills district office of U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, on Feb. 23, brandishing signs demanding a town hall and occasionally chanting, “We want a town hall.”

This group and others held similar demonstrations outside their GOP congressmen’s offices as part of an Illinois Day of Action sponsored by Indivisible, a national movement countering President Trump’s initiatives and policies, particularly the Affordable Care Act. Their signs carried various messages, such as that Hultgren is missing in action or MIA, calling for a town hall, and asking how he can represent them if he won’t meet with them.

Several signs declared they were not bussed in and are not being paid to protest – a response to an assertion from the White House that billionaire liberal George Soros is bussing in protestors and paying them to undermine the Trump presidency.

And as they held up their signs, nearly every car or truck that passed beeped its support.

“I want to tell him I expect him to hear our voices,” said Gerry Becker of Aurora. “I’m just saying how important these issues are to us, particularly the ACA, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security. There’s many, many, many issues we would like to talk to him about.”

Becker said she has Medicare, but supports others to have access to affordable health care.

“I have Medicare, so I’m lucky – for a while,” Becker said. “But we don’t know what he’s going to do to Medicare, either. I think our representatives need to be our voice in Washington. … Not just follow the party line; they need to be our voice.”

Rex Zimmerman, 69, of Batavia, said his main concern was health care.

“So many people don’t have health care,” Zimmerman said. “I don’t see how you could be a good Christian without making sure there is health care for all. And, for me, that is the major issue.

The Democrats have put something together – good or bad. The Republicans have done nothing. And this is a major issue in a civilized country that we don’t have it.”

“I would see people survive their first bout of cancer – then mortgage their house and lose everything,” Zimmerman said. “A study in Congress showed that not having health care was one of the major reasons for bankruptcies. So affordable health care is extremely important. And I’m not fighting for my age group. I’m fighting for everyone younger, that we have that legacy.”

Charles Cappell, a retired sociology professor from Northern Illinois University and a former Campton Hills village trustee, said he dropped off a public memo to Hultgren concerning Medicaid expansion and the ACA enrollment in his 14th Congressional District.

The memo seeks to have Hultgren sign a promise “to my constituents that I will not vote for any changes to or repeal of the Patient Protection and [Affordable] Care Act that will diminish in any way the quality, scope, benefits coverage or that will increase the personal health care costs to patients currently covered by the ACA.” Cappell’s memo also states that if Hultgren does not sign the promise, that he should provide “a justification and rationale for the harm your actions will do to the least well-off among us.”

“The policies of the Republican party, that they are promulgating now that

Trump has been elected, are going to hurt the most vulnerable people in our society,” Cappell said. “I am here to let them know they do not have the majority of people behind them. There is ample evidence and data of how many people have benefited from the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for the Republicans to just unilaterally make vacuous promises and plan to cap benefits.”

In Illinois alone, Cappell said, eliminating the Medicaid expansion benefit to people below or slightly above the poverty level would jeopardize the health and wellbeing of some 671,100 residents who now get that support.

In an email response, Hultgren stated he appreciated getting input from constituents. Hultgren’s email noted that he has hosted Coffees with the Congressman, one-on-one meetings with constituents, and conference calls and meetings with businesses, churches, hospitals, schools, nonprofit organizations and municipalities.

“While some constituents have communicated a frustration about their demands for a particular format of meeting, I have met individually with many of these same constituents one-on-one who have provided valuable input on various aspects of how best to repair the ACA,” Hultgren stated in a email response.

“Unfortunately, there is an ele-

ment of this group who are following a well-publicized ‘playbook’ on how best to disrupt and prevent a civil dialogue on important issues, such as health care and veterans issues,” Hultgren’s email stated. “That’s not fair to all 14th District residents who deserve a respectful discussion.”

In the coming weeks, Hultgren stated he will continue to look for new ways to engage constituents “in civil dialogue that is necessary to cover these critical issues.”

“We are still fortunate in the 14th District in that we haven’t forgotten that in the end we are all neighbors,” Hultgren’s email stated.

Geneva resident Jeanne Scown, who helped organize the event, said she told Hultgren’s district staff that they would not yell and shout at him as has been reported at town halls with other congressmen.

“I saw that stuff on television,” Scown said, referring to coverage of boisterous town halls. “I would not have a town hall if it was going to look like that. … We will self-police.”

Scown said Hultgren has not had a town hall for a long time and if he had, maybe constituents would not be so up in arms.

“He’s our rep. That is what they’re supposed to do – have town halls,” Scown said. “He is our servant, and he needs to understand that.”

Domestic battery Yorkville police said a male resident of a home in the 500 block of Arrowhead Drive called 911 at 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and hung up before speaking with the dispatcher. Police arrived at the home and the man admitted to calling 911 because his wife hit him once during an argument, police reported. The man did not need medical attention and he did not want to sign criminal complaints against his wife, police said. He agreed to leave the house for the night, police said.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Madison Childs and Jason Wilcox, sophomores at Yorkville High School, will join other outstanding musicians from across the nation as part of Music for All’s 2017 Honor Band of America Childs and Wilcox were selected from numerous applicants from across the nation for membership in this prestigious honor ensemble. Both are members of the Yorkville High School Wind Ensemble under the direction of Victor Anderson and Bobby Vriezen.

Both Childs and Wilcox play the clarinet and were selected by audition to rehearse and perform in concert as part of the Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha, March 9-11 in Indianapolis, Ind. They are being supported by a generous scholarship from the Yorkville Music Boosters.

The Honor Band of America students will first come together on Wednesday evening, March 8, from 26 states representing 66 high schools, and will perform in concert Saturday night, March 11 at 8 p.m. under the direction of Michael Colburn,

Director of Bands, Butler University. Michael Colburn was the 27th Director of “The President’s Own” United States Marching Band from 20042014. The concert will take place at Clowes Memorial Hall, located on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Childs and Wilcox have also received numerous honors including performing with the ILMEA All State Orchestra and Honors Band respectively, the Northern Illinois Big 12 Honors Band and the Fox Valley Music Festival. Childs is also the clarinet section leader for the Marching Foxes.

Band members are selected by recorded audition and evaluated by leading music educators.

“To be selected for membership in this elite national ensemble is a great achievement and honor,” says Eric Martin, Music for All President and CEO. “The 2017 Honor Band of America members are ambassadors of America’s music programs, as well as their states, schools and communities.”

Third-graders take part in courtroom simulation KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Leslie Kressin’s third grade classroom at Bristol Grade School explored a Fairy Tale Unit that ended in a court room simulation.

Students wrote their own version of a fractured fairy tale. One memorable fairy tale had Rumpelstiltskin turning stone into beautiful sought after porcelain toilets.

The class then learned about court room legal terms/ vocabulary and processes.

They read “Little Red Riding Hood,” discussing the possible crimes that could be tried against Mr. B.B. Wolf

and after acting as a Grand Jury, it was decided that he must go to trial. Students broke off into teams of prosecution, defense and jury, and with the help of parent volunteers, wrote their own testimonies and questions for the trial.

The class then went to court at the Kendall County Historic Courthouse. While court was in session, our jury foreman summoned several parents to sit on our jury.

The parents under guidance of the jury foreman found that B.B. Wolf was only found guilty of Cruelty to Children and Fraud.

Yorkville loses regional heartbreaker to L-W West

Yorkville took defending Class 3A runner-up Lincoln-Way West to two overtimes Monday in a Class 4A Sandburg Regional quarterfinal.

The 16-seeded Foxes, with two starters fouled out and point guard Jonathan Suarez on the bench hurt, came back from down five in the second overtime to tie it.

Lincoln-Way West, though, won it 62-60 on a tip-in as time expired.

“Our kids played their hearts out,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “I couldn’t ask for more as a coach. We had opportunities to win that game.”

Javell Moore scored 20 points and Logan Habada fought through illness to add 10 points with a big 3-pointer in each of the overtimes. Austin Avery and Jake Eberhart each added nine.

The Foxes led 11-8 after a quarter and 25-24 at half, then trailed 36-33 going into the fourth quarter and by two with two minutes left in regulation.

They forced overtime, and led the first extra session by four with a little over a minute left.

“We were up two with 20 seconds left and were going to the free-throw line, and we had a great look at the end of overtime,” Dunn said. “It was a back and forth game all night.”

The Foxes only managed 16 points after being tied 10-10 after one quarter.

“They went more zone than when we first saw them, but we expected it,” Dunn said. “DeKalb is very good.

They’ve won conference two years in a row for a reason and they showed why.”

Yorkville had upset the Barbs, 4234 in overtime in early February in DeKalb.

“That last time we played we held them to only 31 points in regulation, so our defense was there but we couldn’t

score and they had a lot to do with it,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said.

“Mike (Dunn) prepares as well as anybody on our schedule and they exposed our weaknesses. This time we were able to open some things offensively and beat them vertically.”

DeKalb (18-10,10-3) was able to attack the basket and get to the free-throw line, making 12-of-17 while Yorkville was just 2-of-3.

“Our kids hit their free throws,” Biancalana said. “When we played them last time we were 3-for-11, scored in our first possession of the fourth quarter

and didn’t score again. We were able to do some things offensively that we didn’t do last time.”

Yorkville only trailed 20-14 at halftime and scored the first basket of the second half, but would never get any closer.

A 12-4 run by the Barbs increased their lead to 32-18.

Eberhart’s 3-pointer with 27 seconds left in the third quarter gave the Foxes some life, but DeKalb’s Cole Tucker answered with a 3-pointer of his own at the buzzer to make it 35-21.

Eberhart opened the fourth-quarter with a three-point play and Alexx Nauman followed with a layup to make it 35-26, but the Foxes went scoreless for the final 6:22.

The Foxes committed 16 turnovers while DeKalb only had six.

“They switched up defenses a lot and put pressure on us that we didn’t handle well,” Eberhart said. “We turned it over way too much, forced some things and were sloppy.”

Eberhart accounted for half of Yorkville’s offense with 13 points.

The regional game was indicative of the effort seniors Eberhart, Nauman, Nick Owens, Suarez, Joel Salinas, Jason Lewan and Avery put forth all season.

Of Yorkville’s 28 games, 11 were decided by five points or fewer.

“It’s been a special group to coach,” Dunn said. “We struggled at times to score, but they always played hard.

I couldn’t ask for anything more. I wouldn’t trade this group for anybody.”

Newark’s Mitchell second in Class 1A 3-point Showdown

That’s an understatement.

Newark’s 6-foot-3 senior post, who passed 1,000 career points in November, attempted just two 3-point shots all season.

Good luck convincing folks in Normal that.

Mitchell took second place in the state in the Class 1A 3-point Showdown at Redbird Arena last weekend.

“My dad was a post in high school, he taught me everything I know with my back to the basket, but he could shoot well - he made sure to teach me that, too,” Mitchell said. “I wasn’t able to showcase it as much in high school. It was nice to be able to showcase it there.”

Mitchell was 10-for-15 in Thursday’s preliminary round, tops among the 32 shooters at Normal to ad-

vance to the finals. She made all five of her attempts from the first rack Friday and looked on her way to winning the competition, but only made one more shot.

Greenfield junior Kassidy Walters, the first shooter Friday, won the competition with seven makes.

“I thought about it a little too much,” Mitchell said. “I probably psyched myself out a little bit.”

Mitchell estimated that she practices “hot-spot shooting” for about 10-15 minutes in practice. Senior year, she figured to have a little fun and give the competition a shot.

She only made four shots in regionals, requiring a tiebreaker to advance. Sectionals was smooth sailing, as Mitchell made 9-for-15.

She’d never been to Redbird Arena for state before, but relished the experience. Mitchell will be play at Indiana Wesleyan next year.

“It was cool to get a feel for the college floor,” Mitchell said. “It was a fun experience to have a reason to go down and watch basketball.”

Nolan’s been a big part of Yorkville basketball since day one freshman year.

It was a transition, though.

She came to Yorkville from Cross Lutheran, where her mom is a school secretary.

Nolan contemplated attending Aurora Christian, where her brother went.

“It’s completely different,” Nolan said. “My eighth-grade

graduating class had like 14 kids. My senior class here is over 400. It was a little overwhelming freshman year, but everybody in basketball and volleyball helped with the transition.”

Wensits, a varsity assistant for Nolan’s first three years, knew she’d be something special.

“Honestly, with her it was the sky’s the limit,” Wensits said. “To see someone come

in with that height, we don’t see that a lot in Yorkville. We absolutely knew she’d be a special player. She rebounds better than anybody I’ve ever seen.”

Nolan is indeed a ferocious rebounder and fierce competitor. She’s a different animal off the court, though.

“For as big as she plays on the court, she is such a teddy bear,” Wensits said. “When she’s off the court she’s all

smiles, extremely polite. I can’t tell you how many people come up and say how nice of a kid she is. It’s a compliment to her character.”

Nolan plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice while playing basketball at Division II Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.

Basketball is taking Nolan to borders she’s never crossed.

She’ll be traveling to Spain this summer with her college team, her first time in Europe.

She’s pretty proud of what she’s left behind for future Foxes.

“I definitely hope that this last year we set a great example,” Nolan said. “The six of us seniors talked about that our goal was to step up and teach the younger girls to be leaders for future Foxes, people to look up to.”

Katie Nolan just can’t get away from basketball.

Five days removed from her team’s last game, the Yorkville senior was back at a court Sunday watching her neighbor’s game. Nolan’s 6-year-old niece just started playing, another excuse to take in a little hoops.

“I love watching any age, even when they’re young,” Nolan said. “Just the other day we watched the first and second grade rec team.”

Nolan’s leaving a nice example for those youngsters to live up to.

The 6-foot-1 post will graduate from Yorkville as her school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. In two recent regional games, she had a combined 47 points and 28 rebounds – leading the 26-3 Foxes to their first regional championship since 2002 and first-ever in Class 4A. For her efforts, Katie Nolan is the Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week.

Museum looking for those with memories of ‘The Fox’ trophy Do you remember “The Fox?” The traveling basketball trophy was part of the rich history of the Fox Valley Conference from the late 1940s until it disbanded in the late 1960s. Yorkville, Oswego, Plainfield, Minooka and Newark were among the schools who competed for the trophy.

To honor that tradition, The Fox has found a permanent home in the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Museum in Pontiac.

As part of that special display, the hope is to gather reflections from the era of The Fox from players and fans.

Parkview Christian: The Falcons’ sea-

son came to an end with an 81-76 loss to Crossroads Christian. Sophomore Jake Angelo scored a career-high 25 points for Parkview Christian (11-14).

Austin West added 19 points and Josiah Finnestad 14. West, the school’s first 1,000-point scorer, was named Illinois Christian Conference first team, with Angelo and Finnestad second team. West, Jared Hagen, Jeremy Osika and Jack Swenson were all four-year seniors for the Falcons.

Yorkville sophomore: The sophomore Foxes beat Sterling 33-31 on Feb. 21. Jimmy Eberhart scored 11 points, Alex Avalos seven and Mason Klaas six for Yorkville (14-11, 7-5).

The Yorkville fifth-grade Lady Foxes basketball team took first place in the 3rd Annual DeKalb Barbs Blast basketball tournament on Feb. 4. The girls went 3-0. The Yorkville Judo Club entered eight players at the Wisconsin State Judo Championships hosted by Wahadachi Judo Club at Milwaukee. Yorkville won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Thirteen-year-old Nate Perez entered two divisions, 11-12 and 13-14 year old, winning gold in both. Sensei Rick Undesser came out of retirement and won gold in the Masters 211-pound division. His son Rick won silver in the 132-pound 13-14 year old division. Ian Kiilsgaard entered the 113-pound 11-12 year old division and won the bronze.

Ryan Lambert also won bronze in the 144-pound 8-9 year old division. Also entered were Makayla Undesser, 91-pound 9-10 year old girls division; Sam Sleezer, 62-pound 9-10 year old boys division; and 15-year-old Ethan Loeffelholz, 146-pound senior novice.

Long-limbed and lean, Battle isn’t a player easily defined by one spot on the floor. Like the way her dad played, she always seems to be moving.

She keyed Oswego East’s pressure defense, and her kinetic skill set formed quite a connection with Schultz. Battle’s bounce makes her a relentless rebounder.

She’ll be a guard at the next level, though. Battle works on those skills with her dad, and her Illinois Evolution AAU coach Brett Love.

“It’s just a lot of repetition,” Battle

said. “I’ve really improved more on my guard skills such as dribbling and shooting.”

She’s left quite a mark at Oswego East in two short years.

“That’s the one thing, besides the recognition we’ve received,” Carretto said.

“Now girls in our feeder programs and camps want to be the next Ty or Sydney. The girls in the future are going to want to have the success they had and maybe set some goals they didn’t accomplish.”

Amaya Johns, Oswego East, junior, guard: Transfer from Plainfield North averaged 10.0 points and shot 78 percent from the free-throw line, helping Wolves score a school record 68 points per game.

Jasmine Mitchell, Newark, senior, forward: Four-year starter and Indiana Wesleyan recruit led Norsemen to conference and regional championships. Mitchell averaged a team-best 16.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. She passed 1,000 career points in November.

Sarah Ness, Sandwich, sophomore, guard: All-conference player was second on Indians in scoring with 8.4 points per game.

Ness also led Sandwich in rebounds (5.7), steals (4.0) and assists (2.5).

MaKenzie Vann, Plano, sophomore, guard: Her older sister MaKayli’s running mate on conference co-champion Reapers, Vann was second on Plano in scoring (10.2 points per game) and rebounds (7.0), led in assists (3.1) and was third in steals (2.8).

Gillian O’Neil, Oswego, senior, center: All-conference player was second on Panthers in scoring (7 points per game).

O’Neill also led Oswego in rebounds (6.5) and blocks (3.2).

Ty Battle found a good outlet to get over Oswego East’s crushing playoff loss.

Track.

The Wolves’ star basketball player is doing high jump this spring for the first time in high school.

“It [the playoff loss] didn’t really hit me until a couple days ago,” Battle said. “I just want to stay in shape. I think track will be a good fit.”

She’s used to soaring to new heights by now.

In two seasons after transferring from Joliet Catholic, Battle led Oswego East to a 51-8 record – 28-0 in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

This year the 6-foot-1 Battle, an Indiana State recruit, led the 24-5 Wolves in every statistical category except for blocks. She averaged 16.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.2 assists, finishing her high school career with 1,497 points, 304 steals and well over 800 rebounds.

Her conference’s two-time Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American game nominee, Ty Battle is the Ledger/Record Newspapers All-Area Player of the Year.

Battle best exemplified the kind of teammate she is in arguably Oswego East’s biggest game.

In a thriller at No. 1-ranked Montini, Battle threaded the needle for a pass to freshman Christine Corpuz for a backdoor layup to force double overtime.

“It goes to show that she trusted all of her teammates and wanted them to get involved,” Oswego East coach Abe Carretto said. “She probably could have averaged more points, but she looks for the open person. She’s such an unselfish player.”

The daughter of former West Aurora and Illinois star Kenny Battle, Battle started as a freshman for a Joliet Catholic team that took second in Class 3A in 2014. District 308 was home, though.

Battle went to Wheatlands Elementary and Bednarcik Junior High, and played AAU with Oswego East teammate Sydney Schultz before that.

Battle relished the reunion the last two years.

“It was a good experience playing with different girls that I haven’t played with for a couple years,” Battle said. “We were really close.”

FIRST TEAM

Ty Battle, Oswego East, senior, forward: Indiana State recruit led 24-5 Wolves in every category except blocked shots, including scoring (16.5 ppg), rebounds (6.8), assists (3.8) and steals (3.2). Battle is the two-time MVP of the Southwest Prairie Conference.

Lauren Daffenberg, Yorkville, junior, guard: Committed to Hillsdale College, Daffenberg scored 18 points in regional final win as 26-3 Foxes won first title since 2002 and set program win record. Daffenberg averaged 13.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and hit 44 3-pointers.

Katie Nolan, Yorkville, senior, forward: Four-year starter and Seton Hill recruit led 26-3 Foxes to first-ever Class 4A regional championship, and second straight conference title. Her program’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, Nolan averaged 14.0 points and 9.8 rebounds a game.

Sydney Schultz, Oswego East, senior, forward: Missouri State recruit was second on Wolves in scoring (12.8 ppg), rebounds (6.6) and assists (2.5) and led in blocks (1.5). Schultz is Oswego East’s all-time leading scorer (1,179 points) and rebounder (811).

MaKayli Vann, Plano, junior, guard: Transfer from Indian Creek led 19-9 Reapers to first-ever Interstate Eight Conference championship. Vann averaged area-best 19.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, team-high 4.3 steals, and 2.6 assists and hit 53 3-pointers.

Myre’s shooting, switching defenses spring Norsemen into sectional final

By JOSHUA WELGE jwelge@kendallcountynow.com Cameron Myre came to Newark three years ago a 5-foot-8 guard, and will leave a 6-7 wing in a post’s body.

Growth spurt and all, some things never change.

“I was a shooter back then,” Myre said, “and I’m a shooter now. That skill stuck.”

Myre showcased that skill for all to see Tuesday.

He knocked down three 3-pointers in the first quarter, springing the Norsemen to a fast start. That, and a full bag of switching defenses allowed Newark to breeze past DePue 62-42 in the Class 1A Somonauk Sectional semifinal.

Myre finished with 17 points, Dylan Patrick added 13, Will Clausel 12 and Steve McGrath had eight points and seven rebounds for Newark (26-4), which advanced to play the Annawan-Aurora Christian winner in Friday’s sectional final.

The Norsemen rolled early, thanks to their lanky senior.

Myre took one dribble and drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing on Newark’s first possession, then hit a deep contested 3-pointer from the same spot two minutes later.

By the time Myre hit a third 3-pointer from the top of the key, it was 15-3. The margin got to 20-3 by quarter’s end, part of an 18-0 run that eliminated any suspense over the outcome.

“It was just one of those nights,” Myre said. “After getting that first one to go down it took the pressure off, not just me but for the team. That first one went down, and the hoop looked that much bigger.”

Not even an unfamiliar jersey could slow Myre.

His usual No. 10 was ripped in Newark’s first regional game, so he wore No. 30 Tuesday. He looked at home rejecting a DePue shot in the first minute, and assisting a McGrath 3-pointer later.

The sectional game was unfamiliar territory for DePue (26-4), coming off its first regional title since 1989.

Newark threw off the Little Giants even further.

The Norsemen came out in a high 3-2 zone defense, and switched to man-to-man midway through the first quarter.

For fun, they threw in a 1-3-1 zone press.

It stopped DePue’s offense in its tracks. The Little Giants missed six of seven shots in the first quarter, and spent most of the time passing around the perimeter.

“They’re a fast-paced team and they seemed a little confused and hesitant when we threw all that at them,” Patrick said. “We can switch defenses.

That’s one thing coach said is good about us. He doesn’t see a 1A team that can change defenses like we can.”

It helps to have a seasoned team that starts three seniors and a junior. DePue, by contrast, started four juniors and a sophomore. Junior Eduardo Moreno led the Little Giants with 18 points.

Newark can break out four to defensive five sets on a given night.

“Different looks just to disrupt them so they don’t get comfortable in any one spot,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “I thought that 3-2 was very disruptive in the first quarter. It come from different spots and it’s hard to detect.”

Newark is now a win away from its sixth sectional title since 2009.
