By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The owners of Crusade Burger Bar are planning to open their next project on that same block of Bridge Street in downtown Yorkville sometime this spring.

1836 Drink Lab & Provisions is set to locate in the former Cobblestone Bakery & Bistro space at 101 W. Van Emmon St., with an opening planned for sometime in April.

Dale Lewis, owner/partner of the restaurant, said it would be a farmto-table concept restaurant similar to Sovereign restaurant in Plainfield, of which he is also owner/partner.

“1836 will have a similar style of menu,” he said. “It’s going to be locally-sourced products, no freezer, no microwave, a chef-driven menu, prepped daily. It will be just good old American comfort food, slightly elevated. And we’re going to focus on wine and cocktails.”

The restaurant will offer smallbatch spirits and wines made in the United States, he said.

Lewis said there will be changes to the building’s interior from when it was Cobblestone. He said there were five different entrances to the building, which confused customers. The main entrance will be off Van Emmon, with double doors, and the former bakery area will “become part of the foyer.”

“So that people will clearly know where to go in to get to the restaurant,” he said.

The at-grade east entrance along Bridge Street will remain for those that need access, he said. The former western entrance will be blocked off, he said.

The former wine tasting area will become a beer bottle shop, he said.

“That will be a retail-type establishment, once we get that done,” he said.

Lewis said the interior of the main dining area will be changed to make it “more of our style.”

“It will be more like 1920s, ’30s Gothic-type atmosphere, a little darker but not too sinister,” he said. “And we’re going to redo the bar and it will have a ton of display space for all the wines and whiskeys we’re going to be housing.”

The former Mongolian 211 and Bridge Street Cafe space will be broken up into two spaces, and part of it will be used as a workspace for meat processing. He said the meat processing for the restaurants has been in high demand.

“Now that we’re adding a third restaurant, and two more in Plainfield, we’re going to need more room to process and dry-age more of our beef, make our sausage, pork loins, stuff like that,” Lewis said.

The meat production space will open before fall, he said.

The main dining space in the former Mongolian restaurant will become a processing area, he said. The former

hibachi area will be turned into a meat counter sometime next spring probably, he said.

“We’re going to turn that into a meat counter so that people can come in off the street and buy dry-aged loins that we age in house,” he said.

The beef comes from R. Cooper Farms in Yorkville, he said.

“We’re going to showcase all their beef,” he said.

The pork will be supplied by local farmer Jeff Brummel, he said.

Also, the room that was a lounge as part of the Mongolian space will be turned into “a little dive bar, kind of like a hangout,” he said.

“We’re just gonna focus on old man beers that our grandfathers used to drink, and it will just have bar snacks, nothing crazy,” he said. “Just a place to be casual and hangout and not have to worry about ordering food or dressing up or being pretentious.”

That bar will probably be the last project they open in that block, he said.

Lewis said Crusade Burger Bar, down the block at 209 S. Bridge St., is “killing it.”

“Yorkville’s been good to us with that store,” he said. “It’s done an amazing job. Revenues are solid, staff is solid, you couldn’t ask for a better environment.”

Driver Vasquez sent to prison after five teen passengers died

A reminder of bad decisions

State’s Attorney Eric Weis said the office decided to place a frame featuring photos of the crash victims, a photo of the car at the crash scene, and the date of the crash, in the office’s waiting room in Yorkville. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of one’s decisions, he said. The office’s victim/witness coordinator, Holly Mann, organized the piece, Weis said.

“We had been working on something little to do as sort of a reminder for those that come through this office of what happens sometimes with split-second decisions, how they change people’s lives,” he

said. “We didn’t want to single out this case ... we didn’t want to single out one victim over another, to say you’re more important or less important.”

Weis said he thought it was appropriate “to put that out there as a dedication to all the victims that come through this office.”

Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird said Vasquez was trying to do a good thing by giving the teens a ride home.

“These kids sought her out and they were trying to get home, and she thought she was doing the right thing by trying to take the kids home, and because of her impairment, that was the bad decision,”

Ten years ago this Saturday, in the early morning hours of Feb. 11, 2007, an Infiniti sedan packed with eight teens and a drunk driver named Sandra Vasquez slammed into a utility pole along Ill. Route 31 in Oswego.

Five of Vasquez’s passengers died: Matthew Frank, 17, Tiffany Urso, 16, Jessica Nutoni, 15, and Katherine “Katie” Merkel, 14, died at the scene and James McGee, 14, died of his Sandra injuries a week Vasquez later. Three of the other passengers, all teenagers, suffered injuries but survived, and testified at Vasquez’s trial.

Vasquez, now 33, was found guilty in 2010 of multiple counts of aggravated DUI and reckless homicide, and sentenced to 15 years in state prison. A state appellate court upheld the sentence in 2012.

Vasquez currently resides in Logan Correctional Center in downstate Lincoln, Illinois.

Her projected parole date is March 28, 2023, and her projected release date is March 28, 2025, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

According to testimony and court documents, Vasquez had consumed alcohol – one beer and a “Jagerbomb” – before traveling to her aunt’s house in Boulder Hill to pick up her sister, whom she dropped off at the house earlier. When she got to the house to pick up

her sister, she encountered a drinking party. Vasquez testified that when she went to leave, she agreed to drive some of the teens home but others piled into the car.

Kathleen Colton, the Geneva-based attorney who defended Vasquez in court, said she will occasionally hear from her former client via a Christmas card, but has not contacted her recently. She said Vasquez’s family had been regularly visiting her in prison.

Colton is a seasoned defense attorney, having worked trials involving murders, rapes, and other horrific crimes, but said Vasquez stood out for her as a client.

“She was just a very good person, very sweet-natured, and easy to deal with as a client,” she said.

Colton said she is still convinced that something happened in the vehicle to cause Vasquez to crash.

“I always will believe up to today and afterwards that something happened in the passenger compartment of that car to cause the crash,” she said. “The problem was that the person or persons who knew that, knew what happened, wouldn’t admit it in court. And that was very frustrating. I don’t believe the full truth ever came out at that trial.”

Colton said “everything was blamed on” Vasquez.

Citing the raw emotions around the anniversary, Donna Dwyer, the mother of Matthew Frank, declined to speak about the tragedy, but posted a statement on social media that

School forums gave info on difficult topics School District 308 and Yorkville School District 115 have hosted special forums over the past two weeks to present information on important, yet extremely difficult topics affecting today’s students and parents.

A program on youth suicide and depression was presented by Northbrook-based Elyssa’s Mission on Jan. 26 at Yorkville Middle School. School officials noted that program was especially important due to the loss of a YMS student to suicide last October.

Katie Baker, program director with Elyssa’s Mission, said the organization uses the S.O.S. or “Signs of Suicide” national program when they teach suicide prevention and they will be bringing the program to eighth-grade classrooms at Yorkville Middle School later this spring. Over at Oswego High School, sexual assault, sexual harassment and

social media use by teens were among the topics addressed Jan. 30 by representatives from a social service agency (Mutual Ground), a licensed clinical psychologist, and the district’s two high school resource officers from the Oswego Police Department.

Rhonda Annala, Mutual Ground’s prevention education coordinator, said educators from Mutual Ground give age-appropriate prevention education to the district’s students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Annala noted that sexual abuse crosses all demographic boundaries. “It doesn’t matter how much money you make, it doesn’t matter what color your skin is, where you go to church. None of that matters. It crosses every single solitary boundary,” she said. Dr. Lorna London, a psychologist based in Naperville, suggested parents should keep an eye on their kids’ social media presence, and let them know

that they are protecting them as parents. Perhaps even more importantly, London said parents should model good behavior themselves when they are online.

Unfortunately – but not surprisingly in today’s hectic world of working parents – both forums were sparsely attended. Despite the light turnout, the school districts should be commended for hosting the forums and attempting to inform parents and the community at large about how they are helping students deal with these extremely difficult issues.

From our perspective, the overriding message from both forums is that parents should strive every day to be fully engaged and involved in their children’s lives, and if that is not enough they should not hesitate to reach out to school officials for help and/or a referral.

Black History Month a good time for reflection REFLECTIONS Roger Matile I suspect that most of us really would like to believe that race doesn’t matter as much as it used to. And in some ways, that’s a fair statement.

Until Jan. 20, a black man sat in the Oval Office in the White House, a black man has been chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, two black women in both Republican and Democratic administrations have served as National Security Advisors, and we’ve become used to seeing all manner of black celebrities, from sports heroes to TV stars.

But the legacy of slavery and the pernicious effects of Jim Crow still persist, as we see in those all-too-frequent headlines.

On the positive side, it’s been a while since we had our last major race riot. The most recent disturbances, with residents of black neighborhoods rioting, were caused by real and perceived unfairness, bias and prejudice in the justice system.

In fact, I suspect many of us tend to think of riots concerning race and racial issues as relatively recent things. The ones that stick in the minds of most of us Baby Boomers, for instance, are those that occurred after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in the late 1960s, during which large portions of several major cities were destroyed.

Homecoming suggestion

To the Editor: To the principal and homecoming committee at Yorkville High School: It has been brought to our attention that the committee is considering changing the format of the annual homecoming celebration to a three-day affair. The class of 1950 was responsible for the actual development of the celebration and the original chairwoman of the occasion is still living in the area.

We, the alumni, are very much aware that the homecoming is for the student body, but it is also a meaningful time for the alumni.

The class of ’50, which was a class of 36, had 12 of the class back to celebrate in 2015. Some of us come a good distance and would find it very difficult to travel back and forth for three separate days of events. Also, many of the alumni from out of town have no family left in the area to stay with. That causes an overnight expense many of us cannot afford.

We request that you consider, possibly, playing the game on Friday night and the parade and socializing, reuniting, on Saturday during daytime hours.

County board meeting times to stay unchanged

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. and the third Tuesday of every month at 9 a.m., despite a proposal by some board members to change the schedule to two evening meetings.

The board voted 5-5 Tuesday evening on a proposal by board member Tony Giles to change the regular meeting schedule to two night meetings a month.

Giles, Chairman Scott Gryder and board members Audra Hendrix, Matthew Prochaska and Elizabeth Flowers voted in favor of the change, while Matthew Kellogg, Bob Davidson, Lynn Cullick, John Purcell, and Judy Gilmour voted against it.

The board needed seven positive votes to make a change in its rules of order, so the motion failed.

Giles, a teacher, had argued that changing the schedule to two evening meetings would allow more people to attend the meetings who work during the day.

However, Kellogg said the current schedule is preferable, as it allows people with different schedules to attend meetings either at night or in the morning.

Davidson also said it’s easier to access county staff during the morning meetings if the board has questions about an issue, and elected county officials are more likely to show up during the morning meetings.

Giles said that “a common theme” when he was walking door to door during the election was that the County Board has an “elitist mentality.”

He said the “majority of the people can make an evening meeting.”

Purcell pointed to the mostly empty room and said people don’t attend the evening meetings.

Representatives from a number of Kendall County area government agencies pleaded their case for funding to local legislators at a breakfast event Thursday morning in Oswego.

Legislators who attended the event were state Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora; state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Plainfield; state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego; state Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego; and state Rep. David Welter, R-Morris. State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, was unable to attend due to a work commitment, Wheeler said.

Oswego Village President Gail Johnson, School District 308 Superintendent Dr. John Sparlin, Oswego Fire Protection District Chief Michael Veseling, Oswegoland Park District Executive Director Richard Zielke and Waubonsee Community College’s Director of Governmental and Multicultural Affairs Lulu Blacksmith were among the local officials at the meeting.

Ali Mehanti, District 308’s assistant superintendent for business and operations, gave the legislators an eye-opening overview of the district’s finances.

Mehanti said the district has a $191 million budget, and 49 percent of its

Most of the district’s expenditures are for salaries (69 percent) and benefits (15 percent), Mehanti said. The remaining 16 percent, or $30 million, is spent on technology, buses, food service, utilities, building maintenance, curriculum, and other expenses, he said.

Mehanti showed that the district’s fund balance – or their reserves – was between $31 million and $33 million between 2011 and 2015, and dropped to $25.8 million in 2016. He said the district should have a fund balance of about $60 million, according to the state, which recommends a balance equal to around 30 percent of the district’s budget.

Mehanti said if the expenses increase at about three percent annually, and the state maintains its current funding formula, the district could see a $30 million deficit in fiscal year 2022.

Mehanti said the district doesn’t have a large commercial project such as the Fox Valley Mall that provides tax revenue without the impact of kids entering the district.

“We don’t have a large tax base; we don’t get enough revenues from businesses,” he said.

The district still is owed $49 million in unpaid capital development grants, $21.5 million in unpaid General State Aid, and $7 million in delayed state categorical payments, Mehanti said.

Rezin said she and Bertino-Tarrant sit on the 25-member bipartisan School Funding Reform Commission, formed

by Gov. Bruce Rauner, which recently released a report following months of investigation.

The report states, “At the time of writing this report, the amount of additional state money needed for all districts in Illinois to be at or above their adequacy target is estimated to be a minimum of $3.5 billion over the next decade.”

The state currently spends $11 billion annually on K-12 education, according to the report.

“Currently the state funds school districts at 26 percent,” Rezin said.

“The goal is to input more money from the state to relieve property taxes, as well.”

Johnson told the panel that it’s important that Oswego continues to receive its share of Local Government Distributive Funds, or LGDF, from the

state. She disagreed with a description of it as “financial aid for municipalities.”

“It’s part of a grand bargain made years ago, we agreed not to do local income tax, and the state agreed to give us a portion of the state income tax,” she said.

Oswego Village Administrator Daniel Di Santo said the village’s amount of LGDF has gone down over the years. He said that while the unemployment rate has gone down, the income tax revenue has not increased.

Johnson said legislators should oppose a property tax freeze, stating that the village has an “extremely low (property) tax rate” for its portion of a resident’s property tax bill.

“The village of Oswego tax rate is at around 1.5 percent,” she said. “You compare that to Montgomery, which is over 5, Yorkville is over 7, and Plainfield is over 6. So we are doing an extremely good job with the resources that we have.”

Johnson also urged the legislators to pass a state budget and capital bill, include municipalities in pension legislation negotiations, support Metra service to Kendall County, and protect municipal authority. She said local government should have a seat at the table for workers compensation reform and that representatives should be part of a governing body that guides water supply planning and policy.

“When I volunteer, it is fulfilling to help others,” Stephanie said of her involvement. “It is as if I have been blessed with an incredible life and the small volunteer opportunities are chances to give back some of what I have been given. It is also an amazing feeling to be an active member of my community.”

Stephanie has had a very active volunteer career during her last four years.

When she’s not studying, motivating others as varsity track and field captain, or participating in the National Honor Society, Stephanie spends her times making sure others find fun, friendship and success during high school.

She volunteers in the school’s writing center, coaches kids as a volunteer track and basketball coach during summer sports camps, and is a volunteer with her church.

She works caring for a special needs child, and has assisted wheel chair-bound classmates by helping push them to and from classes. You can also find her participating in the school’s powder puff games, lip sync challenges and as a former student ambassador.

“I have gained traits, friendships, satisfaction, and so many more incredible things from being involved in my school and community,” Stephanie said.

Sports give her leadership skills and a sense of accomplishment. Volunteering provides another sort of satisfaction by helping her gain different perspectives about life.

“I am reminded to be grateful for my blessings because I am introduced to a world where life becomes harder. The world does not revolve around me, and each different perspective on life changes my mindset for the better.”

Stephanie hopes to own an interior design firm that specializes in architectural aspects of buildings.

“I have learned many effective strategies and skills that will help me achieve my goals for my future and ensure my success,” she said.

DUI charge in crash Two motorists received non-life-threatening injuries in a head-on crash on Ridge Road south of Wheeler Road in NaAuSay Township Feb. 5 at 10:37 p.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. Phantom of the Opera Paranormal investigators host ghostly event at Sandwich Opera House

Roe is the executive director at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich. After having one or two odd experiences at work, she decided she would try to determine what was happening.

But instead of calling the Ghostbusters, she invited members of the Midwest Ghost Society to the opera house to conduct a private investigation.

“Once, as clean-up for an event was ending, I was told that the lights in the basement were on,” Roe said. “I knew nobody had been down there because the door was locked. When I went downstairs, the lights were on. I don’t know how that happened.

Aurora residents plead guilty, sentenced in cocaine sales case SHAW MEDIA Two Aurora residents, Rosalio Ramirez, 54, of South Bishop Road, and Lino Sosa, 36, of Rural Street, were both recently sentenced to prison by the Judge Timothy J. McCann for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance pursuant to negotiated plea agreements, according to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.

Both Ramirez and Sosa pleaded guilty to the crimes, Weis said.

Ramirez will serve a 10-year jail term, while Sosa will serve nine years for his role in a cocaine delivery that occurred last February.

According to Weis, charges were filed against both Ramirez and Sosa after an investigation by members of the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team (CPAT) revealed that

Ramirez was selling cocaine. During the investigation, officers learned that Sosa was also involved in the sale of illegal narcotics to undercover officers.

Both Ramirez and Sosa were caught on authorized overhears discussing the sale of cocaine with undercover officers just prior to their arrest.

Weis stated that because a high volume of narcotics was involved in this case, more than 100 grams of cocaine,

By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged an Aurora resident, Stevi Myerscough, 29, with drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, in connection with the death of an Oswego man last summer.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 0-50 block of West Anchor Drive in Oswego Township Aug. 24 on a report of an unresponsive man who was later identified as Chester Secor, 44, of Oswego.

Police said Secor was pronounced dead at

the scene and an autopsy later determined that his death was due to a heroin overdose.

While investigating the incident, police said they determined that Myerscough, an acquaintance of Secor, had proStevi vided him with the fatal dose of Myerscough heroin.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force took Myerscough into custody without incident Feb. 1 and transported her to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, where she remains in custody. Her bond was set at $100,000.

BRIEF Aurora man gets 5 years for selling cocaine

An Aurora resident, James F. Olden, 56, of the 800 block of North Fordham Avenue, has been sentenced to a five-year prison term by Kendall County Judge Timothy McCann under terms of a plea agreement, according to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.

Olden was charged with delivering cocaine to an individual who was working with the Kendall County Cooperative Police Assistance Team in September 2014.

According to Weis, Olden had a prior conviction for unlawful possession of a controlled substance in 2009 as well as a conviction for delivery of a controlled substance from back in the early 1990s.

Olden will be required to serve two years of mandatory supervised release after he serves his five-year prison sentence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Gorup.

Olden was represented by Attorney Ned Kahn.

Dogs and electronics can pick up the lower decibels. But sometimes, our technology can’t explain what we hear or see. Most of us have theories about what they are, though.”

When the group was investigating the Tinker Swiss Cottage in Rockford, Hawke had a direct response when she asked aloud, “Can you say my name?”

“Right now, we don’t know what they are or why we can see or hear these things,” Hawke said. “Maybe they are from another dimension or are souls or energy left behind when a person passes on. Some people call them ghosts, but we use the terms spirits or entities. We have also witnessed shadow figures, dark shadows with no features.”

Attendees of the opera house event had their own theories. David Lemmons of Aurora attended with his son and two family friends.

“I’ve never done a ghost hunt before, but I’ve seen them on TV and they’re really interesting,” Lemmons said. “I haven’t seen a ghost, but there’s always a first time for everything.”

Amateur investigators Lisa Seifrid of Hinckley and Lynette McNamara of Batavia used an EMF sensor and a camcorder during the sessions. Both Seifrid and McNamara heard odd noises during the investigation and will be reviewing their recordings to determine what they heard.

“We’ve had experiences in the past, seeing what looks like a person when nobody is there and hearing disembodied voices,” Seifrid said. “I’m Catholic, and I’ve talked to my priest about it. I definitely believe. I want to help them communicate what they want to communicate and move on.

“This is our first time in the opera house, but my aunt was from the area and always commented that it was haunted,” she said. “We have to look at our evidence to determine if what we heard was anything, but the event was fun, ghosts or not.”

January 2016, MGS has held four guided paranormal investigations open to the public at the opera house. On Jan. 28, 11 of the group’s 16 members held its fifth guided investigation for 30 members of the public.

“We hosted this event and other public investigations to introduce people to what we do,” Lemire said.

“We want people to get involved, learn about our equipment and have a good experience.”

Lemire started MGS, which is based out of Plano, in 2010. Since its founding, MGS has traveled across the country to investigate public locations, businesses and private residences. For some of the locations that are farther away, the group spends the night or even a few days in the building while they investigate.

Ray Buchanan Jr. of Newark, one of the MGS’ original members, described the investigations as fun, social group outings.

“I love being in a goal-orientated team environment,” Buchanan said.

“Many of us have a love of history and historical places. There are a few locations that we visit regularly. The events are fun, but we use scientific methods in our investigations to both disprove and prove if anything is out there. I am both a believer and a skeptic, but it’s hard not to believe.”

Some examples of phenomena MGS has reported and can’t explain include seeing spheres of light in dark rooms, having chairs pushed over and hearing mysterious noises such as whispers, screams and whistling.

Tammy Hawke of Hinckley, who has been with MGS for more than five years, said she had her first paranormal experience after having a nightmare as a child.

“I remember waking up from a horrible nightmare, and there was an old lady sitting at the foot of my bed,” Hawke said. “She told me, ‘It’s OK, honey, go back to sleep.’ That’s when I realized that ghosts were real. I work for Fermilab. I believe very strongly in using science to debunk what we see. However, some things can’t be explained by science.”

To try to debunk phenomena, the group uses electromagnetic field sensors, REM-pods with temperature detection, video cameras with night vision capabilities and audio recorders.

They also use a converted AM/FM radio to generate white noise, hoping to capture electronic voice phenomenon, or EVPs. Setting up and taking down the equipment and wires is the most time-consuming task the day of investigations. Reviewing the collected video, audio and data can take MGS two weeks or longer.

Obviously, she’s probably looked back at that night more than anyone in this room and said what could I have done differently.”

Baird recalled getting the call to go out to the scene, and quickly checking on his son and friends who were in his son’s bedroom, playing video games. He knew that teens would sometimes sneak out and do things they weren’t supposed to be doing.

“They were in the room, but I gotta tell you, I questioned, maybe my son snuck out, because I was asleep,” he said.

Weis said the case affected him deeply.

“I remember just going through the whole case and the trial itself and being emotionally drained,” Weis said.

“You don’t ever celebrate; I don’t think there’s a celebration when the trial’s over and the verdicts come back. Obvi-

ously you want to prevail, you want to make sure justice was done, and in this case justice was done. The families had a substantial burden lifted off them when the case was over.”

He continued, “By the time you’re done, [you’re] just like, I just want to go home and see my family and tell them I love them and put them in a bubble and sit there for a little while.”

But Weis said in his line of work they “don’t get that lull.”

“She was sentenced on a Friday, and Friday night we were out at a shooting,” he said. “So when I think I can sit down and relax for a little bit, something else happens. And in our line of work, that’s just going to happen.”

Oswego Police Chief Jeff Burgner, who was a sergeant at the time, wasn’t working the night of the crash but was involved in the investigation afterward, and interviewed Vasquez.

Burgner spoke of the impact the crash had on the community.

“It resonated through our community very strongly for years,” he said. “Even today, people still talk about this incident, this crash, and it still

has a presence within the community. So many officers in our department had an involvement in that in some way, shape, or form. It had an impact on all of them in a way that, I don’t think any of them had probably ever seen anything like that and probably will never see anything like that again in their career.”

Operation Impact teaches consequences

To make some kind of positive change out of an awful situation, Brian Caldwell and Jennifer Jones Sinnot of the Rotary Club of Oswego put together Operation Impact, a program that educates kids about vehicle safety, including the consequences of drunk driving.

“We collectively gathered a group of community leaders,” Caldwell said. “Rotary was kind of the catalyst of getting this program started.”

The Oswego Police Department, School District 308, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the Kendall County Coroner’s Office, and Rush-Copley Medical Center are among the partners that participate in the program, Caldwell said.

“The whole idea of the program, and the concept, is, if you make a bad decision you’re going to wind up at the police department,” he said. “If your bad decision caused injury, you’re going to go to the ER, and if it’s extremely significant you’re going to wind up in the coroner’s office.”

Sinnot teaches the impact of such decisions on students’ insurance bills, Caldwell said.

“For each and every decision, there’s a consequence,” Caldwell said. “From an insurance standpoint, there’s an increase or decrease of premiums, based on driving experience.”

Burgner said the fact that the school district continues to use the Operation Impact program since 2008 “shows the value in the program.”

“To have them step up and see the need and move this program forward, and still have that program in our schools today, shows that it is a sustainable program,” he said.

Burgner said that over the past 10 years as Oswego’s population has grown, the proportion of teens involved in crashes has remained the same. He said his department also saw a

slight reduction in the number of crashes where teens living in the Oswego ZIP code were at-fault drivers.

“To me, even though it’s not a monumental number in the grand scheme of things, it’s still a reduction,” he said. “To me, that’s a success.”

Baird praised the Operation Impact program. Baird said Oswego saw a more than 20 percent decrease of accidents from 16- to 20-year-olds for five years following the crash, but it’s unknown whether it’s related to the crash or Operation Impact.

“That could be a positive,” he said. “There’s a positive interaction because the sheriff’s office, Oswego police, and local business people have more interaction with the youth of the community.”

Weis said it’s difficult to quantify whether programs like Operation Impact, or the lasting effect of the crash, affect young people’s thinking about drinking and driving.

“If it stopped one person from getting behind the wheel or one person made that decision, we’ll never know that that actually happened,” Weis said. “I like to think it does.”

Working overtime Yorkville loses heartbreaker to Geneseo, then upsets DeKalb in OT

By CHRIS WALKER sports@kendallcountynow.com Jonathan Suarez and Yorkville faced a tall task Saturday.

The Foxes were coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to Geneseo the night before. They had to hit the road to DeKalb, unbeaten in conference.

On top of it Suarez, the Foxes’ 5-foot-10 senior guard, was giving away four inches in guarding Northern Illinois football recruit Cole Tucker.

Surprise.

Suarez held Tucker to just two points in the second half, eight points total, and Yorkville came away with a 42-34 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win in overtime to snap a four-game losing streak.

“Suarez is only 5-10 and is giving up a few inches to Tucker on top of the fact that Tucker is a Division I athlete,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “I am proud of the way Suarez stuck with him tonight.”

Jake Eberhart scored 14 points and hit all four of his free throws in the fourth quarter to lead Yorkville (10-12, 3-5), which outscored DeKalb (14-8, 6-1) 11-3 in overtime. Yorkville led 11-10 after a quarter and 16-14 at the half, then trailed 29-23 after three quarters before holding DeKalb to just two points in the fourth quarter.

Javell Moore added 12 points and Logan Habada had nine.

“Moore is learning how to play at the varsity level and is a great scorer for us,” Dunn said. “He is probably our leading scorer with around eight points a game.”

Missed opportunities from the free-throw line and some awful luck ruined Yorkville during its game against Geneseo on Friday.

The Foxes made just 15-of-29 free throws and fell in overtime, 41-39, in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference play in Yorkville.

“We’re about 57 percent on the year for free throws and we’ve continued to struggle to score,” Dunn said. “But, again, our kids came out and competed. I thought they played extremely hard and if we make free throws at the end of the ballgame, it’s a closed deal. We didn’t and [Geneseo] made some big plays.”

The biggest came from Jacob Pauley, who scored 13 points.

And never should have happened.

Yorkville squad eyeing elusive regional title

When Geneseo teammate Isaiah Rivera (14 points) dribbled the ball off of his leg, it redirected to Pauley. Pauley’s long 3-pointer gave the Maple Leafs a 41-39 lead with 5.8 seconds remaining in overtime.

“I just thought that I needed to get a shot off,” Pauley said. “Everyone wants that last shot. I didn’t think I was going to get it. Their guy dove and almost got the ball, but I got it and just threw it up.”

The Foxes could only manage an off-balance long 3-point attempt from Jake Eberhart before the buzzer sounded.

“This was again the telltale of our season,” Dunn said. “We played another grind, more of a football game and only give up 41, and that was with overtime. But you still have to score more to win. We have to find ways to win games and we didn’t do it.”

late 3-pointers from the Maple Leafs (9-8, 3-6).

Prior to Pauley’s game-winner, Suarez had split a pair of free throws with 14.1 seconds left in regulation to give the Foxes a 35-32 lead. It set the stage for Keaton Rice, who tied the game with a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left.

In the overtime, Yorkville’s Moore (21 points) came up with a couple big baskets, but he also struggled from the free throw line, missing his final two attempts.

“Today was probably our worst game all season with free throws,” Moore said.

“We were able to stay with it because of our defense. For me, offense, I try to attack and just get the whole team involved.”

The Foxes lost at Ottawa 44-36 Tuesday. They are back in action Saturday at home against Plainfield Central.

Katie Nolan and Yorkville’s four other seniors have already checked off three big milestones.

The Foxes have clinched back-to-back conference championships. Nolan has cleared 1,000 career points, and is Yorkville’s all-time rebound leader. She’s closing in on the program’s career scoring lead.

One big hurdle remains, though.

Yorkville has yet to win a Class 4A girls basketball regional. The program’s last regional title, in 2002, came prior to the IHSA’s expansion to four classes.

The Foxes can make their mark next week.

Yorkville (23-2), seeded fourth in the Class 4A East Aurora Sectional, starts regional play at Joliet Central on Feb. 15 against the West Aurora-Joliet Central winner.

“It would mean a ton to win a regional, especially for our seniors,” Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said. “They have been phenomenal. We’ve had great kids in the past. This group has piggy-backed off of that work ethic and raised it a notch.”

Indeed, with two wins this week and two in regionals Yorkville can match the program win record, a distinction held by the 1981 sectional champion.

Nolan is averaging 12.7 points and 9.1 rebounds and Lauren Daffenberg 13.5 points to lead the Foxes.

The Foxes entered this week in a rare position - coming off a loss.

Minooka beat Yorkville 48-38 on Saturday, Yorkville’s first loss since before Thanksgiving. Minooka is seeded third in Yorkville’s sectional.

“While you’re never happy with a loss, it is a great learning opportunity,” Wensits said. “We’d much rather experience that now than next week.”

Yorkville and West Aurora (11-12), the potential regional final opponent, are no strangers. The Foxes beat the Blackhawks 44-39 in November.

“We did not play well. It was our first game with Katie back after she got her tonsils out,” Wensits said. “It would be nice to play them again.”

Yorkville lost to Neuqua Valley in last year’s regional final, and likely could get another Naperville team next week.

Naperville Central (21-8) is led by junior guard Mia Lakstigala, who has offers from Northern Illinois, Duquesne and Marist.

“Obviously our main focus would be shutting her down,” Wensits said. “So much of it is the mental hump, getting over that. I think they know what it takes. It really falls on those seniors’ shoulders.”

tics or figure skating, teams have to hit a certain difficulty level in their routines to hit a certain amount of points.

If a girl falls, it’s a deduction.

“The girls really strive for not getting those deductions,” Graff said.

“They really focus on your dance and motion as well as your projection and showmanship. How is your voice, how is your energy.”

And, of course, there’s the jumps.

So much of competitive cheer comes down to whether or not a girl has basic tumbling skills.

“Their jumps have to be super high, and they have to be willing to change their jumps,” Graff said “With a younger team at the beginning of the year it was about teaching skills.”

Morris leads three sectional qualifiers

What a difference a year makes.

Morris, Yorkville’s senior 285-pounder, won two tough decisions at the Class 3A Rock Island Regional on Saturday.

He joined fellow regional champ Nick Stemmet (170) and Brady Fisher, third at 182, as qualifiers for this weekend’s sectional meet in Normal.

The Foxes were hoping to contend for a team regional title, but the competition in Rock Island proved rugged. Plainfield South (171.5) took the team title with Minooka (169.5) second.

Yorkville (74.5). placed seventh.

“We kind of expected to get more guys through, so it’s a little disappointing,” Yorkville coach Jake Oster said.

“The three guys that did advance did what we thought they could.”

For Morris, it didn’t come without high drama.

Down four points going into the third period, Morris got an escape and a takedown, and two more takedowns in the final 25 seconds for a 10-7 win.

Morris went on to win a 2-1 decision over Plainfield South’s Dominic Ferraro in the final.

“He gave us a little bit of a heart attack in that semifinal match,” Oster said. “He had tried to take the kid down a couple times and the kid just countered his attacks.”

Stemmet (35-8), also seeded first, made short work of his opponents at 170.

He pinned Rock Island’s Chase Spicer in 3:02, Minooka’s Connor Colbert in 1:53 and Normal West’s Ahmad Qahwaji in 1:39.

“He looked like he was ready to go,” Oster said. “He was in control of all of his matches. He had been sick a little bit during the week, so we said let’s get off the mat as soon as we can.”

Fisher (28-13) rebounded from a 9-3 loss to Adrian Cervantes of Plainfield South in the 182-pound semifinals to win an 11-2 major decision over East Moline’s Tyler Berhenke.

Stemmet and Morris earned firstround byes for the upcoming sectional meet.

Fisher will open with Neuqua Valley’s AJ Lighthall at 182.

“Our three guys have good shots at getting through,” Oster said. “Brady has the kid from Neuqua that he lost to at Sycamore, so that’s a match we’ll hopefully flip. Nick will probably start with the kid from Lockport that he wrestled at the beginning of the year.

Nick won a close one. The guys have to wrestle tough and hope to move on.”

Newark never trailed in regulation, after a 19-9 first quarter that saw Clausel score nine of his 28. The lead ballooned as big as 29-15 midway through the second quarter on a Patrick basket.

Jordal, though, beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer, then hit a second to close Indian Creek to 29-24 early in the third quarter.

The two teams combined to shoot a staggering 78 free throws, 59 of those coming in the fourth quarter and two overtimes. Clausel’s missed free throw preceded Jordal’s 3-pointer to force overtime, but he hit six straight free throws in the first overtime. It seemed to salt the game away, until the foul and technical with 23.1 seconds left and Newark leading 65-61.

“It was just a crazy game,” Patrick said. “Toward the first part I was really nervous; I hadn’t been put in that position before. Will said going into that second overtime I needed to keep the ball in my hands and take care of it.”

Playing in four straight conference championships, and winning the last three, wasn’t lost on Clausel.

The Norsemen beat Indian Creek the last two years.

“Last year wasn’t easy, either,” Clausel said. “We have a hard time with Indian Creek. They are a good team and they have a good coach.

Three in a row is great. I’m fortunate. We’ve had a good run.”

Annawan 69, Newark 56: Newark lost to fellow state-ranked Annawan on Monday. Clausel scored 21 points and Myre added 17 for the Norsemen.

Now this is something to cheer about.

Yorkville’s competitive cheer team took fifth place among 25 teams in the medium-school division of the state tournament on Saturday in Bloomington.

The Foxes scored a season-high 85 points to place at state for the second straight year.

But wait, the story gets better.

Yorkville took fourth last year, but this year’s team was nearly a whole new group. Only five girls returned from last year’s 20-girl roster. Most of this year’s team was made up of freshmen and sophomores. A few girls quit.

Others got sick.

“At the beginning of the year, after the first competition we would not think this was possible,” Yorkville cheer coach Caitlin Graff said. “Nobody predicted for us to even go to state. For these girls just to go to state is a huge accomplishment.”

Competitive cheer season practice

starts in late October. The first competition is in November.

Yorkville practices six days a week during the season, two and a half hours per day.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” Graff said.

“In the beginning of the season we were dropping a lot of stunts during competition, not scoring high.”

Graff said the turning point came at a meet on Jan. 22 at Huntley, where the Foxes scored 81.11 points for second place. They took fourth at conference, then finished third at sectionals with another season-best 83.97 points.

“It just came together,” Graff said.

“The girls started trusting each other.

During warmup time they were getting each other pumped up and focused on the routine.”

The pressure at any state meet is palpable, but consider this: In Friday’s preliminaries Yorkville had one routine, 2 minutes and 30 seconds, to determine if they’d make Saturday’s final 10.

Teams get one more routine during the finals.

Routines consist of tumbling, stunting and pyramid. Similar to gymnas-

When Newark’s All-State senior reacted to his fifth foul in the last minute of overtime in Friday’s Little Ten Conference Tournament championship in Somonauk, he was subsequently called for a technical foul.

Four Indian Creek free throws later, disbelief and double overtime.

Clausel, from the bench, had parting words to teammate Dylan Patrick in between overtimes.

“I told him, ‘OK, now you need to play,’” Clausel said.

“Dylan had not been having his best game. He really stepped up.”

Indeed he did.

Patrick scored eight of his 14 points in the second overtime, and Newark survived to take the back-and-forth final 80-73 to win its third straight tournament championship.

Patrick banked in a baseline runner to give Newark (20-4) the lead for good, 7069 with 2:46, and hit six free throws in the second overtime period.

“Big players were out of

the game, I felt like I needed to make plays,” said Patrick, a junior guard. “We had many chances to win that game. We had to take it right there.”

Newark’s 20th championship, in the 98th edition of the Little Ten Tournament, was a memorable one. The Norsemen led by 14 in the second quarter, and by seven with two minutes left in regulation.

They weathered Indian Creek’s comebacks to win the longest championship game since 1961.

“The fans got their money’s worth,” Newark coach Rick Tollefson said. “Winning without Will in that second overtime, that’s going to be big for the kids as we move on. We gutted it out.”

Clausel scored 28 points, going 17-for-22 from the freethrow line. Steve McGrath and Beau Brown both added 14 points and Cam Myre six points - all of them in the second overtime.
