Ingemunson is accused of misdemeanor battery against one of her deputy clerks at a Yorkville bar in December.

Kendall County Judge Timothy J. McCann sent a letter Jan. 12 to 23rd Circuit Court Chief Judge Robbin J. Stuckert asking that the case be heard by a judge from outside of Kendall County. The 23rd Circuit consists of Kendall and DeKalb counties.

Kendall County chief deputy coroner resigns

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Coroner Jacquie Purcell’s chief deputy has resigned, Purcell confirmed Monday.

Samantha Marshall was introduced to the Kendall County Board in December as the office’s new deputy coroner; she had worked in Grundy County before coming to Kendall.

Purcell said Marshall “resigned during a disciplinary hearing.”

Purcell said she and Senior Deputy Coroner Brian Leonard would fulfill the chief deputy role in the interim. She said she will see how that “plays out over the next few weeks” and a decision would be made whether Leonard would go full-time.

She said if she decides to hire someone to replace Marshall, she will post the job on the website for the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.

“Regardless, someone would come in with full experience,” she said.

Ingemunson According to a Yorkville Police Department news release, Ingemunson, 49, of the 2300 block of Iroquois Lane, Yorkville, was charged after a Dec. 21 incident that occurred at a bar in the 600 block of West Veterans Parkway, where she made “physical contact with the victim.” However, the release states that the victim was not injured in the incident.

A complaint filed with the Circuit

Clerk’s Office on Dec. 27 states that Ingemunson “knowingly made physical contact with [the alleged victim] in that she placed her hand on her head and pushed her head.”

The alleged victim is an employee of the Circuit Clerk’s Office, according to court records.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis filed charges Jan. 9 against Ingemunson for misdemeanor battery.

Weis explained that if a new judge is assigned, the case would still be physically heard at the courthouse in Kendall County but that the judge would be from DeKalb County.

A court hearing and plea setting for Ingemunson has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville.

City buys Rt. 47 property for future Public Works expansion TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The city of Yorkville has purchased an old house on Route 47 for the possible expansion of the Public Works building.

The City Council approved the purchase Tuesday evening of the property at 609 N. Bridge St., the former home of Don and Judith Burks, for $160,000 plus payment of the 2016 property taxes on the property. The closing date for the sale is Feb. 24, officials said.

The entire property is about twothirds of an acre in size, according to a memo from City Administrator Bart Olson. It includes a renovated home that is about 100 years old, as well as a detached garage.

“The value of the property to the city lies in the adjacency to 610 Tower Lane and the access to Route 47,” Olson wrote. “While the city has no immediate plans to expand the Public Works facility at 610 Tower Lane, we felt that the permanency of the water tower, well, and water treatment facility on the site meant that we would use the site to grow and/or re-orient the facility in the long-term future.”

Senffner said he had been attending the parades since his children were little and that the “alumni we get are local anyway.” He said if it’s unpopular or doesn’t work, the district can always switch it back the following year.

“If the students at the high school feel like it’s something they want to try for one year, it’s not my homecoming, it’s the kids’ homecoming,” he said. “I don’t see anything wrong with trying something different, and if it doesn’t work, then you switch it back the next year.”

Burks said homecoming has been a hot topic during her 16 years on the board.

“My only reservation is, homecoming is exactly what it is – it is about the students and the kids, but it’s also about the alumni because it’s called homecoming,” she said. “I think we have to balance both sides. I think we have a fabulous homecoming for the kids anyway with what we have now.

So in terms of the kids and the parade, I don’t think the kids really matter. But I am very concerned about the fact that we have to support alumni, and it is somewhat unreasonable to think that we could get them to come on Thursday because that’s two days off of work.”

Burks said the one stakeholder group Travis didn’t mention “was the alumni.” She said she would feel more comfortable with input from alumni.

She also addressed Senffner’s comments.

“Jason I know you’re new to this town, but we did have one of the most, really great homecomings,” she said.

“We had a homecoming parade on Saturday with the game on Saturday; it was a really nice event. And we had a storm once on Saturday and we had a knee-jerk reaction and I’ve heard nothing but comments from alumni since.

I’d feel more comfortable if maybe we could pause it and go to what I think is probably another important stakeholder group, the alumni, and talk to them a little bit.”

Burks was referring to the change by the district in 2006 to host the homecoming game on Friday evening instead of Saturday when it was traditionally held. She said she has seen alumni “numbers dwindle” at the parade since the game day was changed.

Burks said there “used to be 400 people in that park on Saturday, and it’s just not there anymore.”

Fisher also asked if the school has involved alumni.

Travis said his understanding from student council sponsors is that they have reached out to alumni “in the past,” and that they “haven’t gotten a wide turnout for that.”

“I think we really thought through this process of how to engage alumni and make them part of the homecoming celebration that we have, and certainly reflecting bringing them in as part of that Hall of Fame experience and bringing them in during day on Friday for our assembly,” he said. “I think Friday is a big turnout, with the alumni tent.

I think more and more students come back and more and more alumni come back for that.”

The Yorkville High School Homecoming parade will take place on Thursday evening rather than Saturday morning starting next school year after the Board of Education approved the move in a 4-1 vote Monday night.

The change was part of a few changes put forward by the high school’s student council in collaboration with school administration, according to a memo from Principal David Travis.

“For your understanding, the sponsors approached building administration regarding the proposed changes due to the continued challenge to decorate the gym, cafeteria, and sports lobby on Saturday prior to the event,” Travis wrote in his memo.

Board Vice President Lynn Burks cast the lone “no” vote. Board members Ashley Shields, Dean Fisher, Tom Kozlowicz and Jason Senffner voted in favor of the change. Board President Dave Dockstader and board member Dr. Robert Brenart were absent.

The parade has long been a combined school and community event that has included many alumni riding in cars and on floats.

According to Travis’ memo, the homecoming parade will be at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 28, with parade lineup at 5 p.m. Monday would be a movie night, or maybe a replacement of movie night with a boys volleyball tournament or other event; Tuesday would be a bonfire, moved from Thursday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Wednesday would be the powder puff game from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Thursday evening following the parade would be a district Hall of Fame banquet at 7 p.m. A representative panel of Yorkville Education Foundation members, building and district leaders and the Board of Education would select up to three inductees annually, Travis’ memo states. The inductees would serve as grand marshals in the parade.

On Friday, the Hall of Fame inductees would be invited to the high school to share their stories with current students throughout the day, and would be incorporated into the homecoming assembly that day, Travis’ memo states.

The Hall of Fame inductees also would be recognized at the game Friday evening, and there will be an alumni tent and recognition of classes, the memo states. The homecoming court will be presented during the game, as well, the memo states.

The Student Council will decorate the athletic lobby and cafeteria between the end of school and the beginning of the sophomore game, the memo states. Student Council will use Saturday morning to decorate the gym in preparation for the homecoming dance.

The dance will be from 7 to 10 p.m.

The memo also proposes naming the Yorkville Fox mascot, where each school would choose a name and the district would vote on it.

During a discussion prior to the vote, Fisher said he was concerned about alumni being able to travel to homecoming festivities if the parade took place on a Thursday evening.

Plenty of bad news, but did you miss these stories?

Over the past several weeks you may have noticed that we’ve published a significant amount of bad news – most of it involving serious crime here in and around Kendall County. But in case you missed it, we’ve also published several “good news” articles over the same several weeks and want to call your attention to just a few of those stories in case you overlooked them: • In the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday, the students in Lisa Paluch’s third-grade class at Prairie Point Elementary School in Oswego made and then with the help of their parents distributed 300 snowman decorations to residents in several local nursing homes. We’re certain the decorations helped brighten the holiday for many of the nursing home residents.

• The past several months have

been extremely difficult for the many volunteers at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry in Yorkville.

In June the pantry’s former longtime director Maria Spaeth was found dead of a prescription overdose, just days after the Yorkville police department executed a search warrant at the pantry. Then, last week Spaeth’s husband, Ken, was arrested at his home in Lake Holiday and his father-in-law, William Crowley, 77, of Scottsdale, Arizona, was taken into custody by authorities in Arizona in connection with the theft of between $150,000 and $200,000 from the pantry.

Despite the unfortunate series of events, the pantry and its determined group of volunteers have managed to continue to serve the county’s neediest residents over the past several months and through the holidays without missing a beat.

As Tandy Pinter, a member of the new food pantry board, said, “The search warrants, missing money and shocking drug overdose of our trusted leader in June should have collapsed the operation. Instead, our 50-plus volunteers kept their heads in the game, showed up every week, and persevered through their grief to guarantee the mission was fulfilled – caring for the hundreds of clients each week, relying on us to help feed their families.”

• Over the past few weeks several buildings in downtown Oswego have been vandalized with graffiti. In one especially despicable act, a vandal or vandals spraypainted a wall at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Oswego Public Library. We’re happy to report this week the graffiti was not on the wall for very long, thanks to Nedrow Decorating Inc. Last Wednesday morning, Nedrow

employees Matt Gibson and his cousin, Bryan, chemically removed the graffiti. They are set to return in late spring or early summer when warmer weather will allow them to powerwash the entire memorial and then seal it to protect it from further damage.

Nedrow, a commercial painting firm based in Aurora since 1965, is providing its services at no charge to the village.

Matt Gibson, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, said being able to repair and protect the memorial means a lot to him. The memorial also means a great deal to the many veterans in our community, their families and, we’re certain, the many other area residents who understand and value the sacrifices made by our nation’s veterans. Thanks to Nedrow Decorating, the memorial should be protected for years to come.

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile Congratulations are in order! We’ve managed to survive the mid-winter holiday season relatively intact, from the grueling Christmas shopping season, through school and church programs and concerts, and ending up welcoming in 2017 with the fervent hope that it won’t be any worse than crazed 2016 was.

We spent another typical Matile New Year’s at home where we kept our supply of pickled herring handy to welcome in the year as we watched TV hosts acting goofy and trying, unsuccessfully, to pretend to be wild and crazy hipsters. And with the start of 2017 we’re now practicing writing the new year on our checks and still trying to decompress from the November election.

With election and holiday hysteria both now thankfully past, we can start dealing with our regular, day-to-day hysteria.

It’s times like these when we grab onto any bit of normalcy we can find, and for me, that means anticipating each day’s mail delivery with its usual load of junk and real mail. But even junk mail – absent those aluminum siding and Publishing Clearing House circulars – can provide the alert reader with a few new factoids to file away. And so, with no (or at least very little) further ado, here are a bunch of things I never would have found out had I not carefully opened, scanned and recycled all the junk mail that arrived each and every day the mail carrier showed up at the mailbox out in front of the Matile Manse:

Fern Dell owns four buildings: the one room school, blacksmith’s shop and two other buildings downtown that house the majority of their vast collection of local history. One of the museum buildings also has space set aside for historical items from neighboring communities. The current display is on loan from Mr. Bill Perkins of Millbrook.

Our two biggest fundraisers are coming up soon. First is the annual rummage sale, which is held at the Newark American Legion. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Donations for the rummage sale will be accepted at the Legion Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Next is the 32nd Annual Ham & Kumla dinner which is held at the Newark Fire Station on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Newark to use Yorkville adjudication services

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com If a Newark resident gets a citation for an ordinance violation, they will have to travel to Yorkville City Hall to get it taken care of, following an action by the Yorkville City Council Tuesday.

Aldermen unanimously agreed that the village of Newark could use Yorkville adjudication hearings for its residents’ tickets.

City Administrator Bart Olson said in a memo to aldermen that Boyd Ingemunson, Newark village attorney, approached the city a few months ago about using Yorkville’s hearings for Newark’s tickets.

“Newark writes a few tickets per year for various issues, and currently prosecutes them through the circuit court system,” Olson wrote. “Since Newark writes so few tickets, they did not think the effort of creating their

own administrative adjudication system would be worth it.”

Olson wrote that having an intergovernmental agreement for such services would “be a good example for intergovernmental cooperation.”

Olson’s memo states that for the first six months, the city of Yorkville “will cover the cost of adjudication and will evaluate how much cost should be apportioned to Newark at the end of the six months. We will then use that

framework to establish cost sharing going forward.”

Following the vote, Alderman Joel Frieders praised the action.

“This is an example of governments spending money wisely,” he said.

“Since Newark doesn’t have much... going on in the way of ticketing, it does makes sense to allow them to utilize our adjudicator. So I think this is just another example of creative government spending, and I’m all for it.”

YORKVILLE PARKS AND RECREATION PROGRAMS 2-Ball Competition, Friday Feb. 3: Show off your basketball shooting skills in a two person team while competing in a shooting competition against your peers.

The Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a 2-Ball Competition on Friday, Feb. 3, at Autumn Creek Elementary School (2377 Autumn Creek Blvd., Yorkville).

Boys and girls in grades K-8 are eligible to participate.

Teams can be co-ed, boys only, girls only, or parent/child in the following divisions, K-second grade, third-fifth grade, and sixth-eighth grades. This is a free event.

City tightens rules on golf carts, other off-road vehicles

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Yorkville City Council tightened rules Tuesday prohibiting golf carts and other off-road vehicles to travel on public city property.

According to a memo from City Administrator Bart Olson to the City Council, last year a resident was ticketed for using a golf cart in the Countryside subdivision common areas. The ticket was thrown out at the city adjudication hearing because the city’s ordinance only prohibited such vehicles on park properties, and the common areas in the subdivision were not considered a park, Olson explained.

et “insisted that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) allowed him to drive a golf cart on all public properties,” Olson wrote. However, a letter from City Attorney Kathleen Field Orr clarified that the law does not apply to driving golf carts.

“While the ADA requires a public entity to afford a disabled person an equal opportunity to participate in any service, program or activity, the use of mobility devices in public thoroughfares is not mandated by this law,” Orr wrote.

The new ordinance, which the council approved unanimously, clarifies the restrictions by the city, prohibiting all non-highway vehicles from all city properties, whether they are park properties or public buildings.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Failure to reduce speed Yorkville police cited Christopher Assmar of the 300 block of East Orange Street, Yorkville, with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident Jan. 17 at 3:30 a.m. following a crash on Route 47, just north of Fox Street. Police said Assmar was traveling northbound on Route 47 when he lost control of his vehicle; the automobile skidded off the roadway and hit a utility pole. No injuries were reported.

Criminal damage to property • Yorkville police took a report of criminal damage to property in the 600 block of South Bridge Street. Police said two large windows were damaged with approximately 19 small holes possibly caused by a BB or pellet gun.

• Yorkville police investigated a report in the 300 block of Essex Court in which $500 worth of damage was caused to a vehicle parked in a driveway.

Mayor holds off on appointment for Ward 2 alderman

Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski said Tuesday evening that he would not appoint a resident to the vacant Ward 2 alderman seat.

Golinski was going to appoint a resident to the seat, which was left vacant when former Alderman Larry Kot retired in December, but said he didn’t think it was fair to appoint one of the three people running for the seat.

Instead, he said he would appoint the winner of the April 4 municipal election to the seat on April 11, approximately one month before they would normally take office.

Former Alderman Arden Plocher, Yorkville Park Board President Deborah Horaz and Robert Gryder are running for the Ward 2 alderman spot.

Golinski said he worked with Plocher when they were both on the City Council, worked with Horaz when they were both on the city’s park board, and knows Gryder “really well.”

“It’s a very hard decision to make for me,” he said. “I hate to take a decision out of the residents of Ward 2.

“So I just think, leave it up to the people and let the best person win.”

Joseph Galmarini is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

The son of Charles and Suzanne Galmarini, Joseph plans to attend Clemson University and pursue a career in industrial engineering.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors When it comes to drive, Joseph Galmarini’s got it.

Not only is the YHS senior a varsity athlete and academic stand-out, he’s also an entrepreneur who has already created two businesses of his own.

Joseph put together a small moving crew, which is available for hire, and has created and marketed his own lawn service businesses over the last three years.

Did we mention he does volunteer work and works a host of after school jobs?

At school, you can find Joseph participating as the founding member of the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, a member of the Student Council, Future Business Leasers of America, the robotics team, and as a varsity football player and wrestler.

All of this comes in addition to taking a full course of AP and honors classes, which has proven to be no easy task, Joseph said.

“My life experiences have prepared me for my future in so many ways. While there are still a countless number of things to be learned about life, I am confident that I have the skills and motivation required to be a successful person,” he said.

Through his school years, Joseph said he’s figured out how to use his time efficiently, complete assignments in a quality and timely manner, and how to deal with the great amount of dependence he’s placed on himself throughout high school.

Police said the victim declined medical attention and the incident remains under investigation.

Motorist clocked at 94 mph County sheriff’s deputies ticketed Francisco Velazquez, 19, of the 6000 block of Morningstar Lane, Plainfield, with speeding 35 mph or more over the posted speed limit after stopping his vehicle on Ridge Road at Johnson Road in NaAuSay Township Jan. 22 at 10:07 p.m. Police said Velazquez’s vehicle was traveling 94 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Foxes take 3-game win streak into big weekend

What is Jake Eberhart and Yorkville’s secret to playing stingy defense?

It starts with juice. No, really.

It has nothing to do with a healthy diet, either.

“We keep track of a defensive play chart, and if a kid makes 10-plus plays they get the juice award,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “The kids take pride in that, where they’d almost rather do that than score points. We pride ourselves on our defense.”

The Foxes sure are putting the squeeze on opponents lately.

Buoyed by the defense of Eberhart and others, Yorkville beat Morris 42-30 on Jan. 20 for its third straight win.

Javell Moore led the Foxes (9-7, 2-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) offensively with 10 points, and added three steals and two blocks. Jason Lewan had a two-handed slam dunk among his eight points, and grabbed seven rebounds.

Yorkville still doesn’t score a whole lot, and lately it hasn’t mattered. The Foxes haven’t topped 46 points in a game in a month. They have, though, won their last six games in which they hit at least 40 points.

“That is our recipe,” Dunn said.

“We’re improving offensively and the guys believe in what we are doing.”

Eberhart had a big hand in holding Morris leading scorer Matt Shaw to five points.

“We stuck Jake on Shaw and he denied him the ball,” Dunn said. “It was a team effort. Any time you get a Morris game it’s going to be physical, but our guys did a great job.”

Yorkville has a big weekend on the road ahead.

The Foxes are at Oswego Saturday.

But first, they will seek to avenge two earlier losses to Kaneland. The Knights beat Yorkville 35-32 on Dec. 2 and 39-37 Dec. 27 at the Plano Christmas Classic.

Kaneland (4-15, 1-4) and Oswego (413) have fewer wins than Yorkville between them, but don’t tell Dunn that.

A long bus ride Saturday afternoon didn’t faze the Yorkville girls basketball team one bit.

The Foxes came out on fire after a 1-hour, 45-minute trip to Sterling, and the Golden Warriors couldn’t find an answer.

Yorkville shot 58 percent (18-for-31) from the field in the first half – including 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from 3-point range – and built an insurmountable lead by the midway point of the second quarter in a 70-47 Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover victory at Musgrove Fieldhouse.

“We’ve had a tendency to build big leads and let the other team back into it,” Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said, “and I was pleased with how we held it and then stretched it out today.”

The Foxes (19-1, 10-0) scored the first 14 points of the game, and led 18-2 before Mya Pearson’s baseline drive and layup to get within 18-5 after one quarter. Early in the second, 3-pointers by Lauren Daffenberg and Olivia Ross ignited a 20-7 run to push the lead to 38-14 with 3:21 left in the first half.

Freshmen Reeder, Stemmet among four conference champions

Cale Reeder has come a long way.

Reeder, Yorkville wrestling’s 138-pound freshman, was pinned by DeKalb’s Jakob Norman in his first varsity match.

Reeder got his revenge at an opportune time.

Winning the 138-pound final by a 5-4 decision, Reeder was one of four individual champions as Yorkville narrowly defeated DeKalb for the Northern Illinois Big 12 conference title on Saturday at Kaneland.

Led by champions Reeder, Brett Stauffenberg at 145 pounds, Zack Katula (152) and Nick Stemmet (170), Yorkville held off DeKalb 184.5-178.

“I was going for a conference title as a freshman, and I did it,” Reeder said. “I’m very proud. It feels good to get the win.”

Reeder led his match 3-2 after two periods, and started the third on the bottom. He got a quick reversal, and held the lead.

“It was really big,” Reeder said of the reversal. “It really turned around the match, closed the victory. I had to wrestle my match, keep scoring and stay aggressive, and not give up.”

Reeder has a 16-11 record on the season.

“He’s made some huge strides this year,” Yorkville coach Jake Oster said. “Coming in as a freshman, we knew he was good. He got in the lineup early in the year, he wrestled that kid from DeKalb and got pinned. But he’s gotten so much better. He’s going to be really good if he keeps this up.”

At 145 pounds Stauffenberg (20-11), a senior, won a 16-2 major decision over LaSalle-Peru’s Lucas Burris. Yorkville sophomore Katula (21-10) made it championships in three straight weight classes, winning a 5-3 decision over Sterling’s Turner Garcia.

Later Stemmet, (32-8) another of the Foxes’ freshmen, won a 7-6 decision over Sycamore’s Artimus Cunningham.

Stemmet trailed 5-0 in the match and 6-4 going into the third period, but got an escape and takedown to pull out the decision.

Yorkville had 12 wrestlers place in the top six in their respective weight classes.

Ryan Morris was the runner-up at 285, Julian Vasquez was third at 120 and Joe Roberts and Ben Stemmet placed fourth at 132 and 160, respectively. Justin Hames (113), Tyler Peach (126) and Jacobs Simmons (220) took fifth and Derek Butts (106) placed sixth.

“It was a great team effort,” Oster said. “We were wrestling without two of our top guys, Brady Fisher and Brandon Lee. Brandon hurt his ankle the other day, we put him in to see if he was good to go and he couldn’t wrestle. So we were basically wrestling without two weights. It was awesome to see the guys battle through that.”
