By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A Kendall County judge has found a Yorkville doctor accused of sexual abuse and assault involving 17 female patients not guilty in one of the cases.

Judge Timothy J. McCann found Haohua Yang, 51, not guilty Friday following a bench trial related to the 28 counts of criminal sexual assault and sexual abuse in connection with incidents involving women and girls who were patients at his Yorkville practice, according to court documents. In a bench trial, a judge hears the case rather than a jury.

Terry Ekl, a Naperville attorney representing Yang, said he anticipates

other future trials in the future related to the other counts.

“There is a strong probability of future trials, and that would be plural,” he said. “I know Haohua Yang that the state will try him again. The question becomes, how many times will they try him? But with each of these alleged victims, there’s a likelihood of at least one more trial, possibly more.”

Ekl praised the verdict by McCann.

“I think Judge McCann’s [verdict] was logical and it was well-reasoned, and it was an appropriate finding based upon the evidence that was presented to him,” Ekl said.

Prosecutors charged Yang in December 2014 in a single indictment that alleged there were 17 victims between January 2010 and December 2014.

Three of the alleged victims were juveniles, according to court documents.

Yang was a doctor at Yorkville Medical Center on Veterans Parkway and also had an office in Naperville. He is in custody. In April of 2015 he was detained by federal authorities at O’Hare International Airport after he attempted to board a flight to China, according to reports.

A status hearing was set on the Yang case for Feb. 15 at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville. Yang is currently being held without bond at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Todd M. Falkos, 38, of the first block of Sherwick Road, Oswego, faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted of the felony charge.

Assistant State’s Attorney Carrie Thompson said Jan. 12 that similar charges against Falkos could be filed in Kendall County. An investigation Todd M.

The crime occurred in 2011, according to charging documents contained in court records. Falkos was arrested Jan. 12. A warrant for his arrest had been issued Jan. 6.

Judge Phil Montgomery set bond at $750,000. He cited the facts and circumstances of the charges and the probability that additional charges would be filed in his decision.

DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch said he plans to seek a bond reduction for Falkos, who is due in court for a preliminary hearing Feb. 10.

The Friends of the Yorkville Public Library are inviting the community to play mini-golf inside the library on Sunday, Jan. 29. An 18-hole course will wind through both floors of the library. The family-friendly fourth annual MiniGolf FUN Raiser will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last tee-off at 4 p.m.

The funds raised will be used to support children’s programs and the purchase of library books.

Cost is $5 a person, cash or check. Children age 10 and younger must have adult supervision.

There will be visits from the Merry Hearts Clowns, “Ozzie” from the Kane County Cougars and “Spikes” from the Joliet Slammers. Refreshments and activities will be available at the “19th Hole.”

A variety of raffle prizes have been donated. Sixteen baskets are on display in the lobby of the library, and the raffle winners will be announced at the end of the golf day.

Ex-treasurer, father of ex-director accused of stealing from nonprofit

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Indictments have been handed down and arrest warrants have been issued for the husband of the deceased former director of the Kendall County Food Pantry in Yorkville and her father.

A Kendall County grand jury met last Friday and handed down the indictments for Kenneth Spaeth, 55, the onetime treasurer of the pantry and husband of pantry director Maria Spaeth, and Maria Spaeth’s father, William Crowley, 77, for charges of felony theft.

Law enforcement sources said Tuesday afternoon that Kenneth Spaeth had been arrested at his home in Lake Holiday. Sources said Crowley was arrested

by Scottsdale, Arizona, police Tuesday as well.

The indictments list both Kenneth Spaeth’s and William Crowley’s address as a home on Emily Court in Yorkville. Bond for Spaeth and for Crowley was set at $25,000.

The indictments state that both Kenneth Spaeth and Crowley “knowingly exerted unauthorized control over property of Kendall County Food Kenneth Pantry, being United States curren- Spaeth cy, having a total value in excess of $10,000, intending to deprive the Kendall County Food Pantry permanently of the use of the property.”

New leadership took over the pantry in August and it now has a new name, the Kendall County Community Food Pantry.

On June 1, Yorkville police executed a search warrant on the pantry, located at 208 Beaver St. in

Yorkville’s Fox Industrial Park, and a Yorkville residence following reports by pantry volunteers of suspicious transactions and possible theft of funds from the pantry’s accounts, according to police. Law enforcement sources estimated that between $150,000 and $200,000 was taken from the pantry.

A week after the raid, both Kenneth and Maria Spaeth resigned from their positions at the pantry.

On June 21, Maria Spaeth was found dead in her vacation home in Lake Holiday of a prescription drug overdose, according to DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

A Kendall County judge appointed a special prosecutor to the case in July. State’s Attorney Eric Weis, who previously served on the pantry’s board, said he could be called as a witness in the case. In September, the Yorkville police handed over their completed investigation to Charles Colburn of the Illinois Office of the State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Special Prosecution Unit.

Colburn handled the grand jury and the investigation.

After planning and restructuring

for more than a month, on Aug. 11, a newly formed corporation, Kendall County Community Food Pantry Inc., with a completely new Board of Directors, officially purchased all the assets and operations of the previously troubled Kendall County Food Pantry.

The new KCC Food Pantry has been operating under completely new management and procedures for nearly six months.

Board Chairman Greg Witek said, “One of the greatest concerns I hear during public engagements is about whether the new pantry will be more forthcoming with its activities and financials. I am proud to say the new board is unanimously committed to transparency. In addition the mandatory tax filings, we plan to produce a formal public annual report within the next 90 days. One of the most rewarding aspects of this report will be the community’s ongoing support. Generous donations of food, volunteer time and dollars continued to send a clear message. This community wants its

most needy to be cared for.”

The new pantry board continues to field questions regarding the previous pantry leadership, the June search warrants and the possibility of misappropriated funds.

Grant Wegner, legal counsel for the new pantry, said, “Within days of the new board taking operational responsibility this past summer, the pursuit of every legal option of investigation and possible prosecution have been paramount to the new board. Every available avenue has been and is being aggressively pursued.”

After a nearly catastrophic blow just a few months ago, the new KCC Food Pantry has rebounded, implemented management and financial controls, and supplements the needs for food, clothing, pet food and personal items for thousands of people in Kendall County.

Yorkville shaking off the 2008 recession The city of Yorkville appears to be finally shaking off the ill effects of the 2008 recession. As we reported last week, the city issued 152 permits for new single-family homes last year, an increase of 80 percent over the 84 homes permitted for construction in 2015.

According to city officials, the two most active subdivisions for new home

starts were Windett Ridge off Route 47 on the city’s south side and Autumn Creek off Route 34 on the city’s northeast side. A total of 42 homes were permitted for construction in Windett Ridge and 41 in Autumn Creek.

When the recession hit nine years ago, home construction in the city’s many developing subdivisions all but stopped, leaving homeowners who had

all ready moved into those subdivisions to contend with acres of unsightly vacant lots and miles of partially constructed streets.

The uptick in new home building should be a welcome development for the local homeowners who have longed to see their subdivisions completed. It’s also good news for Yorkville officials as they seek to attract new

sales tax generating retail stores and restaurants to the city. To retailers and restaurant owners looking for new markets, it’s all about the number of residential rooftops in a given area.

This past year’s homebuilding activity should send businesses looking at new markets a very positive message that Yorkville is a desirable place to live and a place they should be.

Early Kendall settlers had very few ‘good rifles’ When folks decided to up-stakes back East and head out here to the Illinois frontier in the 1830s, it is natural for us, at this great remove and after being indoctrinated through generations of television westerns and related historical dramas, to figure they were a well-armed crew.

But the fact is, by the time the 1830s rolled around, most of the conflict with Native Americans east of the Mississippi River was over. Further, the bulk of the settlers arriving during the prime settlement era of the 1830s were farmers, not the hard-bitten “long hunters” like Daniel Boone or Davy Crocket.

The lack of armed settlers is not only surprising today, but it was also surprising back then, as well.

The U.S. Army’s Gen. Edmund Gaines, surveying his options and resources as the war with Black Hawk’s band of homeless Indians began in 1832, complained in a letter: “These settlements are even more sparse and feebler than I had anticipated. Few of the inhabitants are supplied, as our border men used to be, with good rifles, or other means of defense.”

And indeed, after the war broke out some 125 frightened settlers gathered at the home of the Rev. Stephen R. Beggs near Walker’s Grove (now Plainfield) for mutual protection. The Rev. Beggs, writing about that exciting time some years later, recalled that among all those pioneer families, only four firearms were available to defend the settlers. Even more startling, the Rev. Beggs noted that “some” of the four firearms didn’t work.

So the question someone in the 21st century might legitimately ask is how did pioneer families survive without weapons for hunting?

The question illustrates, in part, how our view of the past has been

REFLECTIONS Roger Matile skewed by constant exposure to the entertainment industry’s versions of frontier life, not to mention myths created, embroidered upon and perpetuated by those who have one political ax or another to grind.

By 1833 when settlers started arriving here in large numbers, it had been 20 years since the U.S. fought its last major war. The Native American tribes still living east of the Mississippi were increasingly acculturated. The “Five Civilized Tribes” living down in Georgia and neighboring states were so civilized they kept slaves. Of course, that didn’t save them from being evicted in the late 1830s as whites decided to seize their land, but it certainly removed the need for regular citizens to go about armed.

Kendall County’s pioneers were, almost without exception, either farmers or businessmen. The folks living here when the first farmer-settlers arrived did include some of the kinds of frontiersmen we generally picture in our mind’s eye when we think about pioneer days.

Frederick Countryman was a white man with an Indian wife who lived among his Indian neighbors and relatives. Vetal Vermet was a fur trader of French Canadian descent. Peter Specie, another French Canadian, was a farmer and businessman who had also worked in the fur trade.

But the old frontiersmen were quickly overshadowed by the pioneer settlers. The tide of settlement, a trickle until 1833, became a veritable flood as thousands of people emigrated to northern Illinois and dozens settled

FORUM To the Editor: The village of Lisbon is proposing issuance of $900,000 in bonds to further construct a municipal sewage system required by the State EPA and enforced by the Kendall County Health Department.

The EPA specifies septic fields to be two feet above seasonal high water table levels, four feet above “bedrock,” 75 feet from a well, etc., resulting in many homes being unable to comply.

The result of this arbitrary EPA requirement has been a multi-year past and present effort to construct a sewage treatment facility and collecting mains – i.e., substituting one large, somewhat elevated septic field and miles of sewage mains and pumps for individual systems at costs estimated at $20,000 to $30,000 per home.

Currently, there are many alternatives to municipal systems. Mechanical systems aerate filtered sewage leachate. Fill can raise septic fields above water tables and bedrock. Cluster septic fields can serve homes not meeting EPA standards. Nearby wells can be cement lined to avoid water contamination. That none of this is permitted exemplifies the one-size-fits-all environmental mind.

The EPA rules date from the 1990s and have discouraged owners of properties fouling the storm sewers with raw or septic sewage from spending thousands of dollars on repaired or new septic tanks and leach fields when installation of a municipal system would render them worthless. Hence the EPA mandates and no money to execute them have worsened water quality.

Possibly this is a clever way to prevent people from leaving Illinois – sufficiently decrease a resident’s home value by high taxes that he can’t sell it for enough to move elsewhere. I plan to stay in Lisbon.

Perplexing to watch

To the Editor: Things seem to have quieted down now regarding the stories that a manufacturing facility may close some of its operations and leave Illinois. There has been some fear for public officials and some folks about a move. Why are folks worried and why should anyone panic or scramble to keep them from leaving?

In July of 2014 it was reported that

more than 850,000 people had left Illinois since 1995 at a rate of one person leaving every 10 minutes. Just last month it was reported that Illinois lost more people than any other state at a now accelerated rate of one person leaving every four to six minutes. Illinois is fast becoming the new East Berlin/ East Germany of the Cold War era.

It is perplexing to watch government officials at all levels panic and scramble to keep a few hundred jobs here, yet pay no mind to the thousands of tax-fleeing refugees. The local, county, state and school solution government to keep our residents from leaving? More property taxes, new and higher fees along with new laws and to make criminals out of innocent citizens for the purpose of “generating new revenue.”

More heartbreaking to me was when I learned that an elderly semi-disabled Vietnam vet was forced to leave her home. Though I admit that I don’t have all of the details, I must question, “Where do these mighty warrior public officials get these universal powers to keep corporations from leaving and then why do they suddenly become powerless when it comes to saving a little old vet?”

I say if a manufacturing facility wants to leave Illinois, then let them leave.

Our vets and citizens should come first.

No one appreciates these companies anyway. The EPA grumbles they pollute, the NLRB is always accusing them of labor injustices, OSHA always finds them dangerous, the IRS sees them as tax felons who can’t be trusted while local road, transportation, workmen’s comp, unemployment, retirement, county, state, municipal, etc. taxes look for ways to get their fair share of revenue like a parasite looking for the best place to suck the lifeblood of its host.

Our so-called “leaders” fail to inspire to keep companies and families from fleeing, and not protecting our vets, shows that you can no longer pay taxes, obey the law and proclaim I am free in Kane and Kendall County, Illinois.

County OKs union contracts for three departments

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board unanimously approved a group of union contracts for employees at its meeting Tuesday morning.

Board members Tony Giles, Elizabeth Flowers and Audra Hendrix were not present at the meeting.

The board approved a three-year contract with the General Chauffeurs, Salesdrivers, and Helpers, Teamsters Local 330 for the Clerk and Recorder’s Office, for Dec. 1, 2016, through Nov. 30, 2019. The contract covers 13 employees, according to Assistant Kendall County State’s Attorney Leslie Johnson, who presented the contracts to the board.

Johnson said there will be changes to the employees’ health insurance similar to what was changed for the Fraternal Order of Police contract that was recently approved.

There is a new provision in the contract that the employer is to notify the

union of any new hires within the first 30 days of employment, Johnson said.

Sick leave notification is increasing from a half-hour to an hour, she said.

Wages will increase by the following: starting Dec. 1, 2016, a $1,400 lump sum; Dec. 1, 2017, $1,400 increase; Dec. 1, 2018, $1,300 increase plus an additional $100 as a quid pro quo for the union’s acceptance of the health insurance changes, Johnson said.

Johnson said starting salary will become no less than $25,407.

The board approved a three-year contract with the General Chauffeurs, Salesdrivers, and Helpers, Teamsters Local 330 for Facilities Management employees. This contract would start on Dec. 1, 2016, and end Nov. 30, 2019, Johnson said.

Johnson said there are six employees affected by this contract: four maintenance 1 employees and two maintenance 2 employees.

There are changes to health insurance coverage in the Facilities Man-

agement contract as well, Johnson said. The employer notification of new employees to the union would be the same as the Clerk and Recorder contract, she said.

The on-call pay would increase from 75 cents per hour to $1 per hour, Johnson said.

Another change is that in the event that the department head hires a subcontractor and lays off an employee, the department head would send a letter to the subcontractor requesting that they hire the laid-off employee, Johnson said.

Wages will increase by the following: starting Dec. 1, 2016, a 2.25 percent increase; Dec. 1, 2017, a 2.25 percent increase; Dec. 1, 2018, a 2 percent increase plus a 0.25 percent increase as a quid pro quo for the union’s acceptance of the health insurance changes, Johnson said.

Starting salary for maintenance 1 employees will be $37,193, and for maintenance 2 employees, $47,009, she

said.

The board approved a four-year contract with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 and Highway Department employees, for Dec. 1, 2016, through Nov. 30, 2020.

Johnson said the contract includes seven full-time and part-time employees that are engineering technicians and highway maintenance crew members.

The contract includes the same health insurance changes as the Teamster contracts, Johnson said.

Johnson said sick time and vacation time will have to be used in eight-hour increments instead of four-hour increments to help with scheduling. For sick time, the employees have to provide one-hour notice, and for vacation time, at least 18 hours notice, she said.

Wages will increase by the following: starting Dec. 1, 2016, a $1,200 increase; Dec. 1, 2017, a $1,300 increase; Dec. 1, 2018, a $1,300 increase; Dec. 1, 2019, a $1,500 increase, Johnson said.

This year, three of the seven counties in the 14th Congressional District were left with one insurance issuer, leaving residents of Kendall, McHenry and Lake counties with a true insurance monopoly. DeKalb, Kane and Will counties will be left with only two insurance issuers. Individuals with these exchange plans could face proposed rate increases for 2017 of up to 77.3 percent, according to a news release from Hultgren’s office.

In addition, the release said, Illinois exchange plans have removed some of the best hospitals and doctors in the state from both their HMO and PPO provider networks.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, supported House passage of legislation Jan. 12 to begin the process of repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare.

The budget measure, called reconciliation, does not immediately repeal the ACA but directs the four health care committees to find more affordable health care solutions for Americans in an effort to save billions in taxpayer dollars.

“The ACA was not repealed today, but this vote begins the process of replacing the law with more affordable and accessible health care solutions for Americans,” said Rep. Hultgren. “I do not believe in simply repealing the ACA and walking away. If repeal is to happen, I will work with my colleagues to replace the law gradually over time with a system that offers Americans more and better choices for health insurance. Any replacement of the law must improve plan choice, provider choice and affordability for people in the 14th District or I won’t support it.

Federal funds awarded for purchase of land near Maramech Forest Preserve

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has awarded the Kendall County Forest Preserve District federal grant funds toward the purchase of land adjacent to Little Rock Creek and the Maramech Forest Preserve near Plano, officials said this week.

The state announced a $750,000 grant for the purchase of 134 acres along the Little Rock Creek corridor, as part of a statewide $3.6 million federal grant disbursement. The land is adjacent to the 92-acre Maramech Forest Preserve, an Illinois Dedicated Nature Preserve.

David Guritz, the forest preserve district’s executive director, said the district is pursuing plans for the potential acquisition of the property.

“The District and The Conservation Foundation were approached in 2016 by the property owner(s) to determine interest for acquiring the property, and a concept plan was developed for the purchase of approximately 134-acres connected to Maramech Forest Preserve,” Guritz said via email.

“As part of this effort, The Conservation Foundation and District have been working to pursue funding that would be required for the potential acquisition.”

Guritz said the grant is “an important first step towards securing the

funding needed to acquire the property.”

“Funds awarded under the Land and Water Conservation Fund grant program require a direct one-to-one match,” he said.

Guritz said the property does not include Maramech Hill, which he said is located on private property and is “not publicly accessible without landowner permission and consent.”

Guritz said the Little Rock Creek corridor includes 26 fish species, and that protection of the creek corridor is “essential to maintain the hydrology which supports these and other cold-water fish species.”

“This area is unique in that it meets numerous county-wide acquisition priorities, preserves an important section of Little Rock Creek, adjoins to a regionally significant nature preserve area, and expands conservation lands around the Silver Springs State Park macrosite,” Guritz wrote.

“The property shares some of the same mesic and dry-mesic upland forest communities as Maramech Woods, and it would also serve to buffer the Nature Preserve, furthering its longterm protection and sustainability.”

Guritz said plans for the site would be for “resource-based conservation and passive recreation, with habitat protection and enhancement.”

According to the IDNR, the site will include parking, a shelter, interpretive trails with overlooks, and signs.

Dennin, 48, of the 800 block of Casey Drive, was injured Jan. 16 at 5:55 p.m. when the vehicle she was driving left the roadway on Grove Road near Sherrill Road in Seward Township and struck a utility pole and overturned, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office. Property damage County sheriff’s deputies responded to a criminal damage to property incident at a residence on Bonnie Lane in Kendall Township Jan. 11 at 5:17 p.m. Police said it was alleged that a female juvenile damaged a male juvenile’s property after a break-up.

Wallet theft reported A resident of the 9000 block of Corneils Road in Bristol Township reported a wallet stolen from his residence Jan. 11 at 3:08 a.m.

Motorist injured in crash A Sandwich resident, Kristin A. Hefele, 51, of the 300 block of West Fifth Street, was injured Jan. 10 at 7:57 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle due to ice and it slid into a ditch on Griswold Springs Road at Little Rock Road in Little Rock Township, according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said Hefele was transported to Valley West Hospital in Sandwich for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Montgomery police are seeking information in a shooting incident Friday evening on Orchard Road in which a motorist was critically injured.

Police said they were summoned to the area of Orchard and Jericho roads at 9:44 p.m. on a report of shots fired. Upon arrival at the scene, police said they located a vehicle on Orchard Road just north of Jericho Road that had been in a single-vehicle crash.

Police said the vehicle had been struck by multiple gunshots and one male inside the vehi-

cle had sustained a gunshot wound.

The male was transported to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora by Aurora fire department paramedics and then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition, according to police.

Montgomery police were assisted at the scene

by Aurora, Oswego and Yorkville police and officers from the Kane and Kendall County sheriff’s departments.

Cross Lutheran School Millbrook Junior High lists open house set for Jan. 29 honor rolls for second quarter SHAW MEDIA Cross Lutheran School will host its Community Open House on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Tours of the school’s Early Childhood Department which includes preschool and kindergarten programs will be available. The open house will also provide an opportunity to meet preschool and kindergarten staff.

Cross Lutheran School, established in 1881 and celebrating its 135 year of continuous Christian education, has been a pillar in the Yorkville community serving families who want to provide a solid Christian education for their young children.

At Cross teachers and staff focus on all aspects of each of our student’s growth, spiritually, socially, and emotionally, preparing them for the next levels of their ed-

ucational experiences.

The preschool combines hands on learning experiences which are developmentally and age appropriate and “Project Approach”, in which student interest drives subject matter and exploration.

Programs for 2’s, 3’s and 4’s with a variety of scheduling options are available.

The full day kindergarten program offers a blend of traditional curricular subjects, such as reading and math, and “Project Approach.”

The Project topic and its course are determined by student vote.

Yorkville went on to sweep both weekend’s games, beating Sandwich 40-35 on Saturday to avenge an earlier loss.

Jake Eberhart is a candidate for the 2017 Student of the Year scholarship award.

The son of Mary Ann and Jim Eberhart, he plans to study finance at an undetermined university in the fall.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice. The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview.

Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Jake Eberhart knows that the pressure of being a standout academic, volunteer, leader and athlete could amount to stress instead of success. But, the Student Council President, varsity track captain, tutor and camp leader has made it a point to assure that never happens.”While time constraints cause many people to crumble, I have found that the key to success in a schedule like mine is to maintain a stress-free attitude.

The more positive and relaxed I am, the better the results,” Jake said. So, Jake takes on his roles as the Future Business Leaders of America co-leader and National Honor Society member with grace and perseverance, although he knows he could never do it all alone.

With three siblings, each involved in a host of YHS activities, Jake said it can be difficult to make sure everyone is where they need to be, when they need to be there. Whether it’s a shift in the school’s writing center as a tutor, as a member of the school’s math team, or volunteering at local summer camps teaching students with disabilities, Jake is expected to be in many places at many times.

“Without the scheduling magician that my mom is, I doubt my siblings and I could be anywhere near as involved as we are,” Jake said. “I would not be the person I am today without her unmatched dedication as a mother over the years.”

Jake said that like his mother, he strives to be a good leader and influence on his school. “I like to focus a lot of my involvement on being a positive role model for the youth of the community,” he said.

As such, Jake exudes positivity on and off the court and field. “I have set a standard of success for myself,” Jake said. “In any endeavor I undertake, my personal expectations allow me to maintain focus and motivation until I reach my goals, and they even allow me to push beyond what I believed to be possible....I now hope to be successful in the future not for my own benefit, but so I can use my resources and my success to service the people around me.”

Cale Reeder (138 pounds), Nick Stemmet (170), Jacob Simmons (220), Ryan Morris (285) and Justin Hames (113) all notched pins for Yorkville. Also winning were Joe Roberts (132), Brett Stauffenberg (145) and Brandon Lee (195). At the same meet Yorkville lost 48-19 to Deerfield. Stemmet and Morris both got pins, Brady Fisher (182) won a major decision and Lee a decision.

Yorkville dropped a 41-18 decision to Stevenson. Roberts and Morris had pins and Fisher and Lee won decisions.

The Foxes defeated Kaneland 51-24 in a dual meet on Jan. 12. Reeder, Zach Katula (152) and Lee all notched pins for Yorkville. Ben Stemmet (160) won a decision, who also got five forfeit wins.

Alyssa Schofield scored eight points and Meggie Scott had seven points and eight assists. Newark followed that win up by beating Hiawatha 6232 on Tuesday. The Norseman, the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Little Ten Conference Tournament, play LaMoille on Thursday.

“I was having a terrible game, I had nothing going on,” Clausel said, “but I just needed a few plays to get us the lead. I knew we could pull this out if we got the lead.”

Trevor Guerra scored nine points to lead Indian Creek, all nine in the first half, his two free throws taking the Timberwolves into halftime leading 29-28.

Indian Creek posts Nolan Govig and Tanner Lutz gave Newark fits in the first half, combining for 14 points.

In a possession typical of the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-7 Myre rejected backto-back shots at the rim.

“They have great length and they used it to their advantage,” Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said.

Newark will be back home on Tuesday, when the Norsemen host Dwight and high-scoring guard Justin Fox. This one was a good one to get against an opponent Newark could see again in the upcoming Little Ten Tournament.

Sam Anderson remembers Redbird Arena most for all its blue.

It’s been nine years, but the ex-Newark star won’t soon forget the scene from her state basketball experience.

“I remember walking into Redbird thinking ‘Is this really real?’” Anderson said. “I remember looking into the stands and seeing all the blue and thinking the whole town of Newark must be here.”

Anderson, likely known around Newark by her maiden name of Sam Akre, made the community many memories.

She rewrote the Newark volleyball record book. In 2008, her junior year, Anderson and close friend Laura Johnson led the Norsemen to second place in Class 1A in Newark’s first state tournament appearance.

She was named All-State.

Still, Anderson didn’t expect the Newark Hall of Fame induction she received Jan. 6.

“The words Hall of Fame, those are such big words.

I don’t think of myself like that,” said Anderson, humble to the core. “It’s definitely a big honor.”

Anderson went on to play volleyball collegiately at Olivet Nazarene, but her heart really never left Kendall County. She came back home after she graduated and was hired as a Newark freshman coach.

Last July she married Kurt Anderson, himself

son is a freshman volleyball coach and softball assistant.

To her players, she’s just “coach.”

“Of course I don’t talk about my past,” Anderson said. “Some of these kids were 10 years old or younger when I was playing. They don’t remember.”

Perhaps their parents can fill them in.

Anderson’s senior year Newark went 32-3 in volleyball, setting a program win record. Anderson set program records for career kills (663), single-season kills (359) and single-season blocks (101).

She’ll always, too, have the basketball run her junior year.

The Norsemen beat Moweaqua Central A&M in overtime in the state semifinal, and lost to Flanagan in overtime in the final.

The most exciting game to Anderson, though, was a one-point sectional final win over Little Ten rival Hinckley-Big Rock.

“Lauren hit a last-second shot,” Anderson said.

“The play was designed for me to take the shot. I saw that she was open. She loved moments like that. She made it and it was probably one of the best moments of my career.”

Anderson feels blessed to be a part of it all.

“To a lot of people, college is the best four years of their life. Not many people go through high school having as much fun as I did,” Anderson said. “There is something about high school in a small town you cherish.”

Habada’s late block seals win for Foxes

Yorkville junior Logan Habada, though, looked closer. He considered Sycamore’s near-halfcourt heave going into halftime to define his team Friday.

“We almost took it as a spark,” Habada said.

“We had three guys diving on the floor on that play. You can’t ask for anything more.”

Habada gave a little more.

Giving help defense on Sycamore’s Jack Mizgalski – who hit the shot to end the first half – Habada got a hand on the game’s last shot to help the Foxes hold on to a 40-38 Northern Illinois Big 12 East win in Yorkville.

Mizgalski wasn’t Sycamore’s first option on the last play, but it was no surprise he ended up with it on the right wing after a timeout with six seconds left.

“We knew [Mizgalski] was going to get it.

He’s their best player,” Habada said. “All practice we worked on that situation. He was Jake Eberhart’s man and I helped him at the last minute on the screen.”

Habada was allowed his late heroics be-

cause of Javell Moore’s determination.

After a timeout with the score tied 38-38 Moore, a 6-foot-1 junior post, took the ball from the top of the key and drove hard down the left side of the lane. Avoiding a charge just before the rim, Moore soared over the Sycamore defender to drop in the game-winner.

“I realized my man was too far off,” said Moore, who scored 11 points and had six rebounds to lead Yorkville. “I just drove right at him.”

It was a final play drawn up to match Moore’s skill set. It almost didn’t happen.

Moore appeared to step on the halfcourt line as he was pressured by Sycamore, but the Foxes got a timeout.

“Javell got downhill on that drive and that’s what we do,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said.

“He’s a tough defense, especially when he gets downhill like that.”

Habada added 10 points and Eberhart had eight for Yorkville (7-7, 1-2), which had dropped three of its last four games coming in. Jonathan Suarez added nine assists. Ty Sulaver led Sycamore with 11.

Katie Nolan, short-handed Yorkville hold off Sycamore

Yorkville’s senior center learned during the last period of school that day that a teammate has an illness and could miss as much as five weeks of school. Nolan and her teammate are close friends, almost like sisters.

“I didn’t process it at first, and then I started crying a little bit,” Nolan said.

“We have such a great connection and we’re so close. You feel a loss.”

Nolan, though, wouldn’t let that loss follow the Foxes to the court.

She scored 19 points – six in the fourth quarter – to help host Yorkville turn back Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Sycamore 43-38.

Yorkville (17-1, 8-0) trailed 23-22 at the half, but came out with the upper hand to win its 14th straight game and sweep the season series with Sycamore (12-6, 4-3).

“Kaneland is our biggest rival, but Sycamore is next. They have two great players and it’s always a tough game,” Nolan said. “I really wanted to win. It’s my senior year. I don’t want to lose a home game.”

Nolan played like it, particularly in the second half.

Twice during the third quarter she ripped away rebounds from Sycamore opponents, turning them into baskets.

She kicked out to Lauren Daffenberg for a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, and scored on a follow shot. Later, she bowled through two defenders for a basket.

In the final minute Nolan called her own number, taking a long inbounds pass from Natalie Malinowski for a score to pad the lead.

“I got after them early in the game that we have to have rebounds and we can’t sit back. I think Katie took it to heart,” Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said. “She’s just taking a huge leadership role. Sidelines out of bounds, she

Nolan shared heroics with Yorkville’s youngest player.

After Sycamore surged ahead 38-37 on Kate Majerus’ back-to-back 3-pointers, Yorkville freshman guard Lily Guerra had the answer.

She drove to the left of the lane and flipped up an off-balance one-handed runner to give Yorkville the lead for good, 39-38 with 2:30 left.

“It just happened,” Guerra said. “I was thinking about passing and then

I saw the defender come to one side. I spinned and I just put it up.”

Her coach was impressed.

“Quite honestly we have kids that need to step up. There’s a void there, with Lindsay out,” Wensits said. “Lily did there.”

Daffenberg and Audrey Macciomei each added seven points for Yorkville.

Macciomei’s two free throws in the closing seconds were the clincher for the Foxes, who travel to Kaneland Tuesday.

Majerus scored 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers for Sycamore.

Yorkville, though, held talented Spartans’ freshman Kylie Feuerbach to just four points.

“They have two kids that are absolute studs,” Wensits said. “It’s always a good one when we play Sycamore.”

Yorkville followed up its Sycamore win by beating Kaneland 67-49 on Tuesday. Daffenberg scored 14 points, Nolan had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Ellysse Trembley and Malinowski 11 points each for the Foxes.
