City officials broke down the number of new homes built per subdivision in Yorkville in 2016.

The greatest number of homes were built in the Windett Ridge subdivision

(42 homes), with Autumn Creek (41 homes) close behind. And 36 homes were built in the Grande Reserve subdivision.

There were 17 new homes built in the Blackberry Woods subdivision, four in the Country Hills subdivision, four in Heartland Circle, two in Cornerstone Briarwood, two on Main Street, one in Prairie Meadows and one in Rivers Edge.

Big band dance, concert set for Sunday

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Circuit Court Clerk Robyn Ingemunson has been charged with misdemeanor battery stemming from an incident Dec. 21 at a Yorkville bar.

According to a Yorkville Police Department press release, Ingemunson, 49, of the 2300 block of Iroquois Lane, Yorkville, was charged following an incident that occurred in the 600 block of West Veterans Parkway, where she made “physiRobyn cal contact with the vicIngemunson tim.” The release states that the victim was not injured in the incident.

Ingemunson has retained a private attorney, Lisa Accardi of Oswego. Accardi said Jan. 5 that neither she nor Ingemunson would comment on the matter.

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis charged Ingemunson with battery Monday, and Judge Joseph Voiland sought a bond of $1,500. A court hearing and plea setting is scheduled for Feb. 13 at 8:30 a.m. at the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville.

The Yorkville American Legion welcomes back the 21-piece Yorkville Big Band Sunday, Jan. 15, for its monthly Sunday dance. Every third Sunday from September through May, the Legion hosts the Big Band for a concert and dance.

WCC offering SAT prep course

Now that high school juniors in Illinois are required to take the SAT college entrance exam, Waubonsee Community College has expanded its test prepa-

ration courses. The college is offering affordable SAT prep courses to help high school students prepare for the exam.

These low-cost courses will be held on Saturdays in January and February. Students can opt to take prep courses in English, math or both. The classes include reviews of key subject matter as well as strategies proven to help students raise their score. Students can also sign up for an SAT practice test course.

The Caterpillar Inc. plant on Route 31 just south of Montgomery as it appeared in 1975. with parts and materials.

Though referred to by company officials as the firm’s Aurora plant, it is physically located in unincorporated Oswego Township adjacent to Montgomery’s municipal limits, west of Ill. Route 31 and east of Orchard Road. Caterpillar has operated the plant at that location since 1957. At one time, the plant employed more than 6,000 workers.

In addition to providing a major source of jobs, the plant has been a significant source of property tax revenue for local governmental agencies over the years, including School District 308, based in Oswego. According to Kendall County property tax records, Caterpillar owns four parcels in the county: three smaller parcels and its plant at 275 Route 31. The records show Caterpillar paid $1,244,318 in property taxes this past year on the plant. Of that amount, $846,792 went to School District 308.

Caterpillar spokesman Jamie Fox said in an email last week that the plant currently employs approximately 2,000 workers, with 800 of those involved in production.

Fox said a “contemplation period” is part of the company’s contract with United Auto Workers, the union representing the plant’s employees. The decision to consolidate is not final, he said.

“A contemplated decision simply means it’s one the company is considering; no final decision has been made,” Fox said. “Faced with challenging marketplace conditions, we continue to evaluate reductions in global manufacturing capacity and how best to cut op-

By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com Among those being hurt by the state’s ongoing budget crisis are some of the area’s most vulnerable citizens, as domestic violence organizations learned recently that a stopgap budget passed last summer did not include funds they were promised.

One of those organizations, Aurora-based Mutual Ground, serves Kendall County residents along with those in Aurora and southern Kane County. The organization opened an office in the Kendall County Courthouse in Yorkville last February.

Michelle Meyer, Mutual Ground’s executive director, said she and approximately 50 domestic violence shelter representatives learned of their funding problem during a meeting with state Sen. Pamela Althoff, R-McHenry, in late November.

“We got together at Sen. Althoff’s office to discuss how we could work better with the funders – DHS, Attorney General, those are some of our funders – as far as paperwork goes and administrative work, so that we could provide the best service to the clients instead of doing a bunch of administrative stuff,” she said. “I was really excited to go to this meeting.”

erating costs. We must use our existing space in the most efficient way possible while maintaining the ability to meet demand when it returns. During the contemplation period, Caterpillar will continue to gather additional information to make a final decision.”

Fox said a final decision on the consolidation is expected in the second quarter of this year, which ends in March.

“Faced with lower demand, we continue to evaluate our global manufacturing capacity,” Denise Johnson, Resource Industries group president, said in a press release.

Following an “extensive review,” the company is contemplating moving production of large-wheel loaders and compactors to Decatur and medium-wheel loaders to North Little Rock, Arkansas. While manufacturing would move out of the Oswego Township site, the company plans to maintain an office there for engineering and product support work, according to the press release.

“Should we move forward with the decision to relocate production, we will support the local leaders to mitigate the impact on our employees, their families and the community,” Johnson said.

“We value and respect the significant contributions all employees in Aurora have made in ensuring Caterpillar maintains its unparalleled record of quality and service to our customers and dealer network.”

Montgomery Village President Matt Brolley said his phone “blew up” with calls last Wednesday after Caterpillar Inc. announced in a statement that it is considering shifting production of its large- and medium-wheel loaders out of its Oswego Township plant to Decatur, Illinois, and North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Brolley said he discussed the fate of the Caterpillar plant with several other concerned area governmental officials, including Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder, interim Aurora Mayor Bob O’Conner, Oswego Village President Gail Johnson and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville.

Brolley said the officials agreed they would seek a meeting with Caterpillar officials to discuss the firm’s plans for the massive local plant. Following a village board meeting Monday evening, Brolley said he and the other officials have contacted Caterpillar officials.

“We’ve reached out to them. [But] we have not solidified anything yet,” Brolley said.

He confirmed that initially the local officials expressed interest in scheduling a meeting with Caterpillar’s chief executive officer. But Brolley said he and Gryder have since discussed setting up an “economic development-type forum” with local Caterpillar officials.

“One of my concerns is, OK, we have people reaching out to the Caterpillar CEO, but if the decision [to shift production] from the local plant has been made, that is more or less out of our control, so we have to look at what comes next,” he said.

Brolley noted that any shift or changes in production at the local Caterpillar plant has a ripple effect on local and area firms that supply the plant

An event important to your property tax bill As in past years, Yorkville-area property owners should find their annual property tax bills in their mailboxes at the end of April or in early May. If the long-established trend continues, most property owners – much to their consternation – will notice that the amount they will owe on their bills is continuing to creep upward.

But before those tax bills arrive we want to remind property owners of another event that will be held earlier in April that will affect how much they pay in property taxes. The other event is the next local election set for

April 4.

In the election, voters will be asked to cast ballots for members of the School District 115 Board of Education, Yorkville City Council and Kendall and Bristol Township positions.

Of those agencies, the school district accounts for nearly 70 percent of the total amount owed on property tax bills each year.

All of the officials elected April 4 will have a role in determining how much local property owners will pay on their tax bills beginning next year and beyond. Sadly, however, local

elections here – despite their significance to the local taxpayers’ bottom line – have historically attracted low if not dismal turnouts. For example, just 11 percent of all voters registered in Kendall County in 2015 cast ballots in that year’s local election. This spring’s voter turnout will likely be no different. However, on the plus side those voters that do cast their ballots will see their ballots really count. Often in local elections the winners are determined by a handful of votes.

Nearly three quarters (71.67 percent) of all of Kendall County’s registered votes took the time to cast their ballots in the November presidential election. That election – like all elections – was crucial to the future course of our country. Voters should remember this spring that the April 4 local election is crucial to the future direction of the very community in which they live and how much they will pay in property taxes.

Pioneer Illinois a dangerous land of opportunity REFLECTIONS Roger Matile In 1826, pioneer Robert Beresford headed north up the Fox River from Ottawa to stake a claim in what would one day become Kendall County. Pierce Hawley soon followed, the two families settling in a hardwood grove in what would one day become Kendall County’s Big Grove Township. They staked their claims in what was then known as Weed’s Grove (named in honor of early settler Edmund Weed), but whose name changed to Holderman’s Grove after Abraham Holderman arrived and bought out the earliest pioneer families.

In 1828, Beresford sold out to John Dougherty and moved back to Ottawa. Dougherty was followed by the aforementioned Edmund Weed, who decided to finally settle down in the grove that bore his name. Also arriving that year was Vetal Vermet, a one-time fur trader who had decided to settle down with pioneer missionary Jesse Walker’s daughter, Huldah, as his new wife. Not too far away, Fredrick Countryman settled with his Potawatomi wife, En-Do-Ga. At the time, the small settlement was the only one along the trail from Chicago southwest to Ottawa.

The Kendall County community of the 1830s was small, and anyone who reads local history soon becomes familiar with that era’s small band of hardy settlers. It’s hard, in fact, not to begin treating them almost like family friends. Besides the Weeds, Doughertys, Hawleys, Vermets and Countrymans, there were the Sweets (Stephen and Allanson), Edward Ament, Peter Specie, and the Hollenbacks, among a few others.

In that familiar, exclusive group there was also Bailey Hobson. Hobson, besides having one of the all-time great sounding pioneer names, was one of the earliest arrivals along the Fox River.

And like Pierce Hawley, his name suddenly disappears from Kendall County records and old

and politician.

According to “A History of the County of DuPage, Illinois” by C.W. Richmond and H.F. Vallette (Scripps, Bross and Spears, Naperville, 1857), in the spring of 1830, Hobson decided to prospect for land west to Illinois. A native of Tennessee, he had married and settled in southern Indiana. But, he recalled in Vallette and Richmond’s book, by the spring of 1830, he had grown “weary of the toil of clearing the encumbering forests from the rugged banks of the Ohio river.”

In May of that year, Hobson left his home in Orange County, Indiana, to prospect for land in Illinois. As strange as it might seem to those of us weaned on television and movie frontiersmen who always traveled armed to the teeth, Hobson left Ohio “without arms amounting to more than a jack-knife for defense and destitute of chart or compass.”

He traveled northwesterly until he suddenly emerged from the Eastern forest onto the prairie country in western Indiana. Turning farther north and west after crossing the Wabash, he eventually struck the Illinois River near the modern town of Peru. Then setting his course up the Illinois to the Fox River, he headed up the east bank of the Fox. He eventually came across Holderman’s Grove and the tiny settlement of five cabins there.

Making the grove his headquarters, Hobson explored farther east, traveling up the DuPage River to Walker’s Grove at today’s Plainfield. He also Photo provided ascended the Fox River as far as Long Grove, just Bailey Hobson was one of the earliest settlers in both south of Yorkville.

Common sense superseded

To the Editor: Wow, what a close call! The Yorkville City Electoral Board has removed an alder­manic candidate from the April ballot for failing to number the pages on his candidacy petition. Not just one page, but both of them. Imagine confused petition readers not knowing which page to start reading first and clerks not knowing whether to file one page in front of the other, or if they should somehow go side by side. Oh, the humanity.

Fortunately, the good citizens of Yorkville will never have to worry about missing page numbers because of this menace to society. The damage he could have done to our city in the future would have been unlimited – missing commas, pencil where pen was mandated, paper clips instead of staples. Why, I’ll bet he even would have used a government email account to wish his wife a happy anniversary.

Thankfully, we live in a society where the rule of case law supersedes common

Drainage district costs

To the Editor: An interesting letter regarding cost allocations in drainage districts appeared in the Record’s Dec. 15 edition.

The wet Illinois prairie of the pre-1850s became rich farmland by lowering the water table two feet or more. The cost of deep ditches to maintain lower water levels was averaged over the area converted from seasonal swampland.

Developments a hundred years later on such reclaimed land which incorporate retention ponds to compensate for impermeable housing “footprints” are as dependent upon the drainage ditches as farmland, and have much more to lose with rising water levels. Three lots valued at $500,000 cover the acre worth maybe $10,000 as farmland. Maybe the development property owners are under-assessed.

The drop in the water table caused field drainage sloughs to become small streams eroding farmland, countered by planting grass and constructing terraces, dams, etc. The slumping of ditch sides with freeze-thaw cycles, not just farmland soil migration, is a major factor in drainage district expenses.

It would be interesting to see published the drainage district rationale for its assessments.

To the Editor: In response to the Dec. 1 editorial titled “Is participation in the AACVB worth the cost?” I offer my view on the subject.

I worked for the CVB. As a longtime Yorkville resident, I promoted Yorkville to the traveling public every day. Is this the whole story? No, just 400 words.

The article states that Yorkville pays a “$70,000 bureau membership fee” annually. This is not true. There is no “membership fee.” Not one penny comes out of the pockets of Yorkville residents or the city budget. The article states, by law, the hotel tax collected by the city has to be spent on tourism. It is sent to the CVB to help fund their marketing efforts on behalf of Yorkville and other communities.

This tax is paid by out-of-town visitors that stay in our hotels.

Yorkville is better off because of the other surrounding communities. Visitors from 70 countries tour the Farnsworth House in Plano. Buses would stop at Cobblestone afterwards for lunch. When there’s a tournament at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, our hotels are full.

Large tournaments come to the 377-acre Sports Complex in Montgomery. Yorkville hotels were often filled with out-of-state teams. Many would visit Raging Waves

Waterpark, eat in our restaurants, shop and fill their gas tanks.

Tax revenue from tourism in Illinois is enough to pay over 30,000 teachers’ salaries. Tourism is also one of the largest job creators. When it comes to tax revenue generated, growth and number of jobs, we are holding our own in Kendall County.

Let’s take an honest look at Yorkville.

St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia and Naper­ ville have turned their downtown and riverwalks into revenue generating machines. Our downtown has empty restaurants, theater, bank, newspaper building, cabinet store and tile store. The riverfront has rusting scrap metal in front of the Yorkville sign and abandoned buildings. Not exactly the well-oiled revenue generating machine, huh?

Yet, the solution could be right under our nose! You’ve heard of Hershey chocolate tours, Milwaukee brewery tours and LEGOLAND that attract millions of visitors every year.

If Yorkville would like to work with the AACVB to bring visitors here, let’s work with Wrigley to create SKITTLELAND. What kid wouldn’t want to see where Skittles come from and how they are Alphonse I. Johnson made? We would have to build more Lisbon

modern Peoria before turning their course northward, finally arriving at Holderman’s Grove about Sept. 22 after a 400-mile trip.

While Hobson sowed some fall wheat, cut prairie hay for the livestock he had brought along and built a cabin, the family stayed at Holderman’s. After three weeks of hard work, the Hobsons moved to their claim.

But Hobson was not satisfied with the land in Kendall County. Later that fall, he explored north to Specie Grove in Oswego Township, where he stayed briefly with Peter Specie, before heading east to the DuPage River, exploring into what would one

day be DuPage County’s Lisle Township before he found land that finally suited him.

In December 1830, Hobson and Stewart traveled to the new claim, having to wade the partially frozen DuPage River. Cold, snow and wind forced the two to return to Hobson’s old claim, however. The rest of the winter – called the Winter of the Deep Snow by pioneers – was so severe the family nearly starved, only managing to survive after Hobson’s epic, grueling 14-day trip east to buy food.

In the spring of 1831, Hobson permanently moved his family to the new DuPage claim. Although disappearing from Kendall County’s history, Hob-

son built a mill on his DuPage claim and was named a county commissioner charged, in 1842, with obtaining land on which to build the first DuPage County Courthouse in Naperville.

By the 1850s, he was a prosperous businessman and farmer.

While many of the region’s earliest settlers faded into the mists of history, many others did not. Bailey Hobson was one of those hardy pioneers who managed to survive and thrive in their new homes on the Illinois prairie.

“We’re talking a little over 50 domestic violence agencies across the state that were completely just broadsided with this information,” Meyer said. “And shame on us, shame on me, for not going through that budget line item by line item, making sure that domestic violence services were in there.

I should have done that; I just assumed someone at the state level would let us know.”

In an email to providers, Vickie Smith, CEO and executive director of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, who was among the audience in that meeting with Althoff, wrote in a letter to providers that on Nov. 30, she met with James T. Dimas, Illinois secretary of Human Services, and that he confirmed that domestic violence “services were not on the list negotiated by the legislators and the governor.”

“I told him that the providers and ICADV were not made aware of this

until 11/21,” Smith wrote. “I asked the secretary if this meant the providers would not be paid for July through December services. He didn’t have an answer but will get back to me.”

Meyer said she assumed Mutual Ground would not get the entire amount, given the current political and fiscal environment of the state, but that the organization budgeted a portion of the funds expecting they would get at least that.

“We were never given a reason to believe that we weren’t going to get that money,” she said. “We knew it wasn’t going to be the full amount, probably.

So for us, for instance, we put about 65 percent of that award amount in our budget, thinking OK we’ll be ahead of the game somehow.”

In a letter to domestic violence shelters dated Dec. 16, Dimas wrote that there had “been some confusion regarding the stopgap budget and funding obligated to domestic violence prevention and intervention contracts.”

“Despite the governor proposing funding for domestic violence programs in both his budget proposal and stopgap proposal, there is currently no General Revenue Fund appropriation for domestic violence programs for Fiscal Year 2017,” Dimas wrote. “However, domestic violence programs are still receiving some funding through special state funds and federal funds.

olence programs that have contracts with the state in full once the General Assembly works with the governor to pass a balanced budget.”

Staff has been cut to cope with the lack of funding, according to Meyer.

There were 38 employees at Mutual Ground in November of 2015, and there are now 29. However, the population at the facility has increased in the past year. There were 47 residents – 15 women and 32 children – at Mutual Ground in November, compared to 37 residents – 18 women and 19 children – at the facility in November of 2015.

The number of orders of protection filed for Mutual Ground clients has also soared, from 34 in October and November of 2015 to 60 in October and November of this year, according to data supplied by Meyer. In Kendall County, nine orders of protection were filed in that period in 2015, and 38 were filed in that period in 2016.

Mutual Ground served 84 domestic violence clients in Kendall County in October and November of last year, according to Meyer. During the same time period in 2015, they served 43 clients in Kendall.

“We have an office ready for us to start counseling in Kendall County in Yorkville at the food pantry and we have nobody to work in it,” Meyer said. “We have a counselor in our office in Batavia who has a full caseload and we’re unable to give her more

hours out there. So there are a lot of services that are going unmet.”

Meyer said she recently met with state Rep. Keith Wheeler, R-Oswego, and state Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, on the budget issue and to plead her case.

“I understand that it’s gonna require some cuts and some taxes, so tell me how much is gonna be cut and let’s move on,” she said. “Because I can put that in my budget and I can plan. Right now, I have no way to plan. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Meyer said the money the organization gets from the state for both domestic violence and sexual assault services is a “big chunk” of its budget, a total of $600,000 of the $2 million budget.

“We’re definitely trying to fundraise more, we’re trying every day, but there’s no magic bullet for raising $600,000,” she said.

Meyer argued that the state has a responsibility to the victims of domestic violence who need these services.

“The state has a certain responsibility to use taxpayer money to support individuals that are vulnerable going through something like this, and we have a contract with the state to provide those services,” she said. “If the state wants to provide that service on their own, they could do that, but they’re contracting with us to do this and they’re not holding up their end of the bargain.”

Teen dies in crash following high-speed police chase

By TONY SCOTT A 17-year-old girl from Dolton was killed following a high-speed police chase in Yorkville’s Heartland subdivision last Thursday, following a report that she had been stealing packages off porches in the neighborhood.

At approximately 9:06 a.m. Jan. 5, Yorkville police were dispatched to the 700 block of Arrowhead Drive in Yorkville for a report of the theft of a package from the front porch of a residence.

Police located the vehicle involved in the theft, a 2003 Toyota Avalon which was reported stolen on Jan. 2,

and stopped it at Omaha and Homestead Drive in Yorkville. The offender fled the traffic stop at a high rate of speed through the subdivision, police said.

The driver then lost control of the vehicle in the 600 block of Heartland Drive and it struck a large tree in the parkway, ejecting the driver from the vehicle, police said.

The crash victim was identified as Nichelle Hill, 17, of Dolton, Illinois, police said.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the traffic crash report and the Illinois State Police assisted with the traffic crash reconstruction, according to Yorkville police.

Suicide prevention training program coming to YMS KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Free suicide prevention training will be offered to Yorkville School District 115 parents and staff at a program at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Yorkville Middle School auditorium.

This presentation will cover important risk factors and warning signs for suicide, as well as how parents can talk to their children about this often difficult topic and where to find help when needed.

Presenter Katie Baker, LCPC, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and director at Elyssa’s

Mission. She has extensive experience in suicide prevention education.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for young people ages 10-34. For the first time ever, middle school students ages 10-14 are dying more by suicide than automobile accidents. The suicide rates for girls in this age range have tripled since 1999.

Elyssa’s Mission provides resources to help prevent teen suicide. The community-based organization was founded in 2006 in honor of Elyssa, a bright, gifted and outgoing Chicago-area girl who bravely battled post-traumatic stress disorder and depres-

sion. Elyssa’s Mission provides hands-on support to area public and private schools and community organizations in order to educate students, staff and parents on how to recognize and assist those teens most at-risk. Elyssa’s Mission fully funds and implements the evidence-based SOS Signs of Suicide Prevention Program in more than 100 middle and high schools in Illinois. State Reps. Wheeler, Breen say they won’t keep $1,506 leadership stipends

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com State Rep. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, said he won’t keep a stipend of $1,506 for two days of work after being named as an assistant House Republican leader in the waning days of the 99th General Assembly.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin appointed Breen to fill the position following the retirement of state Rep. Ed Sullivan. He State Rep. also appointed state Keith Rep. Keith Wheeler, Wheeler R-Oswego, to the post of House Republican conference chairman.

Durkin named Breen and Wheeler to fill the posts on Jan. 9 and 10, the last two days of the 99th General Assembly. The 100th General Assembly began Jan. 11.

The leadership positions carry a monthly stipend of $1,506. But because Breen and Wheeler weren’t named to the posts until the final two days of the 99th General Assembly,

they were effectively being paid that amount for two days of work.

Both Breen and Wheeler said they have no plans to keep the stipends, which they technically haven’t received yet.

Wheeler, who is a freshman lawmaker, said he plans to accept the stipend and donate it back.

“We don’t have a choice by law, but we will then be donating it back to the state by some process that I am not fully aware of yet,” he said.

“That is what our legal people told us is the way it has to be done.”

Wheeler said he also was honored to have been named to the leadership post, even temporarily.

“The purpose was really so I’d be eligible to serve as a minority spokesman in the next General Assembly because we are so short-handed,” he said.

“We’re getting paid six months in arrears, so I wouldn’t even see that money until June,” Breen said. “It wasn’t like I got a check that day.”

Breen was elected to the General Assembly in 2014. House rules state that committee spokesman positions may only be held by lawmakers with

at least three terms under their belt or lawmakers who have been named to a leadership position.

“There’s a special provision of the rules that says you can be a spokesperson if you get a leadership stipend in the prior General Assembly,” Breen said. “That’s how it happened.”

Breen said he didn’t even know how much the stipend would be until he read about it in a news story.

“There was never any intention to unduly increase the salary, certainly,” he said.

“It was two days of work. The way the law reads, as I understand it, is that the gentleman who retired will get a stipend, and then they would have paid me a stipend, as well. So there is no reason to have a double payment of a stipend to two different representatives.”

Now that a new General Assembly is beginning, Breen said he doesn’t know whether he will be able to keep his leadership post.

“I’m honored to serve in whatever way I’m chosen to serve,” he said.

“It was a great honor to be selected for this.”

Pedestrian struck Yorkville police responded to the intersection of Route 47 and Galena Road Jan. 4 at 10:25 p.m. for a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian. Police said Christopher Hansen, 44, of the 1000 block of Galena Road, Yorkville, was walking northbound on Route 47 when an unknown vehicle struck him from behind. Hansen was injured and transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for further evaluation, police said.

Domestic battery Yorkville police arrested Jason M. Doyle, 38, of the 300 block of East Countryside Parkway, Yorkville, on Jan. 5 following an incident at that address.

The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora for treatment of their injuries.

Theft of package Yorkville police responded to a home in the 1200 block of Mistwood Court for a report of the theft of a package. The homeowner told police that a package was delivered at 9 a.m. and was taken from the front porch by an unknown person. The value was estimated at $461.

Juvenile warrant Yorkville police arrested a juvenile Jan. 9 on a no-bond warrant for a family offense. The juvenile turned himself in on the warrant, police said, and he was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville.

Tape on vehicle Yorkville police investigated an incident of a report of criminal damage to property in the 200 block of West Veterans Parkway for an unknown person who put tape on a vehicle parked in a parking lot, causing approximately $100 worth of damage, police said.

Stolen sign Yorkville police took a report that someone stole a Remax for sale sign from a residence in the 100 block of East Fox Street sometimes between 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 and 6 p.m. on Dec. 29.

Running hose A resident reported to Yorkville police that someone turned on a water hose spigot at a residence in the 800 block of Omaha Drive sometime in early December and it was left running until about Dec. 23, causing approximately $98 worth of lost water, police said. No damage was done to the house, police said.

Yorkville man charged with firing handgun into air

Yorkville police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of firing a handgun into the air.

Police arrested Adrian Jowers, 26, of the 1300 block of Marketplace Drive, Yorkville, for reckless discharge of a firearm following Adrian reports of a man Jowers shooting a gun from a second-floor balcony.

When police arrived on the scene, they learned of a possible address of the offender from a witness, police said. Evidence located around the scene led police to Jowers’ residence and he was arrested without incident, police said.

Police recovered one semi-automatic pistol from the scene, as well as several fired shell casings.

Marijuana arrest Yorkville police cited Cody Groner, 20, of the 1700 block of Suzy Street, Sandwich, Dec. 31 for unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police also cited his passenger, a juvenile, for the same charges as well as a curfew violation, during a traffic stop at the intersection of Route 126 and Route 47. The vehicle was stopped for a rear registration light violation, police said.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Route 71 DUI arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Daniel A. Rutkowski, 20, of the 400 block of East Erie Street, Spring Valley, in the 15000 block of Route 71 in Fox Township Jan. 7 at 7:20 p.m. Police said Rutkowski was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and cited for driving on a suspended license and other moving violations. He was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville pending court proceedings. Police said they were summoned to the 15000 block of Route 71 on a report of an erratic driver. Upon arrival, police said they found Rutkowski had driven his vehicle off the road.

One hurt in crash A Sandwich resident, Mary Jane Rohrer, 51, of the 50th block of Countryside Drive East, was injured Jan. 9 at 6:58 a.m. when her vehicle, which was stopped in traffic in the 6800 block of Route 71 in Bristol Township, was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Ginaly Gonzalez, 26, of the 500 block of Westgate Drive, Aurora, according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said Rohrer was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora with non-life-threatening injuries.

Domestic reported County sheriff’s deputies took a report of a domestic battery at a residence in the 0-50 block of Gawne Lane in Bristol Township Jan. 8 at 8:46 p.m. Police said the victim told them that the offender had left the residence prior to their arrival. No charges had been filed in the case as of press time, according to police.

Motorist injured, cited in crash An Oswego resident, Mirah L. Martin, 27, of the 500 block of Chestnut Drive, was injured in a single-vehicle crash on Plainfield Road at Southfield Road in Oswego Township Jan. 6 at 11:20 a.m., according to the county sheriff’s office. Police said Martin’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a culvert. She was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Police said they cited Martin for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage.

Leaving crash among charges County sheriff’s deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the area of Rock Creek Road south of Sears Road in Little Rock Township Jan. 8 at 1:30 a.m. Police said upon arrival at the scene they found the vehicle unoccupied. However, the driver of the vehicle, Ivan Chavez, 22, of the 700 block of West Rock Street, Plano, reported the crash the following day. Police said Chavez was charged with leaving the scene of the crash and failure to report an accident. In addition, they said, Chavez was cited for other traffic violations. He posted bond and was released pending a court appearance.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities and Honors Audrey Macciomei knows what it means to give back, both to her school and her community.

As a student ambassador, Audrey carves out time to welcome new students to YHS. As a student council member, she helps plan activities for every student to enjoy, and as captain of the girls’ basketball team leads her teammates to victory.

These are things that not only help others, but help Audrey in her own quest for success.

The activities have helped her break out of her shell and build a newfound confidence that she wouldn’t have without her participation, she said.

“I believe that I have grown as an individual throughout my high school career and much of this growth is a result of my participation in these activities,” she said. “I am excited to see where I end up at the end of my senior year.”

But, Audrey’s involvement stretches far beyond the school walls. She said she also believes in giving back to her community as a whole, and she does this in a number of ways. She volunteers at local camps where she coaches kids. She’s part of her church youth group and has volunteered at the Kendall County Food Pantry and the St. Vincent DePaul clothing drive. She feeds the homeless by volunteering at the soup kitchen, and also participates and puts on the Hoops for Hope Cancer fundraiser through her school.

“It has opened my eyes to all that I have to be thankful for and has made me want to help out with volunteer activities more often,” she said. “It gives me a great amount of satisfaction to know that I’m working for a good cause and is a great learning opportunity.”

In addition to her educational, athletic and volunteer pursuits, Audrey has also carved out time to work as a former gymnastics coach and as a cashier at a local restaurant.

Man gets 7 years in prison for sex assault, domestic battery SHAW MEDIA

A Lake Holiday resident, Michael P. Fernschuss, 25, has been sentenced to a seven-year prison term by Kendall County Presiding Judge Timothy J. McCann for one count of criminal sexual assault (a Class 1 felony) and one count of aggravated domestic battery (a Class 2 felony).

Both charges were against the same victim but occurred on separate dates, according to Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis.

Fernschuss was originally charged with aggravated domestic battery back in September of 2014 when, during a verbal and physical argument, he choked his girlfriend to the point where she could not breath. During the course of this investigation, police learned that Fernschuss had sexually assaulted the victim when she was unable to give consent.

The criminal sexual assault charge went to a jury trial in September of 2015.

During the trial, testimony from the victim, electronic recordings, computer analysis and conversations between the victim and Fernschuss were presented to the jury. Ultimately, the jury found Fernschuss guilty of criminal sexual assault.

Derek Butts is Yorkville’s smallest varsity wrestler.

He’s already made a big impression.

Butts, a 96-pound freshman wrestling at 106, notched a 7-5 decision over Morris’ Abby Eisenbies in his first varsity match to help Yorkville to a convincing 68-3 dual win on Thursday.

“Derek has been wrestling JV all year and is smaller than everybody that he wrestles, but he just goes out and wrestles hard,” Yorkville coach Jake Oster said. “He’s going to grow into a nice 106-pounder the next few years.”

Yorkville got pins at the meet from Zack Katula (152), Ben Stemmet (160), Ryan Morris (285), Joe Roberts (132), Cale Reeder (138), Jacob Simmons (220).

Brandon Lee notched a 3-2 decision at 195 pounds and Tyler Peach a 3-0 decision at 126 and Brett Stauffenberg won by technical fall at 145. Nick Stemmet (170), Justin Hames (113) and Julian Vasquez (120) received forfeits.

The Foxes’ only loss was more than respectable. Brady Fisher dropped a

“We really try to not use our hands like that on defense but we do have a lot of length, which we like to use,” Daffenberg said. “I think their goal was to try to get points in transition and we kind of pulled them out of that, especially after the first quarter.”

Wensits liked seeing the forced turnovers but was leery about how the Foxes caused many of them.

“We might’ve gotten a little lucky at times there and could’ve been called for some fouls with a different referee crew,” she said. “But it was nice to see overall. We got a lot of rotations in there and a lot of kids got to see the court.”

The game was just the second for the Foxes since their holiday break and after winning the Ottawa tournament. It was their first home game since beating Geneseo on Dec. 15.

“We finally had a home game. We hadn’t done that in a while and it was the first time having the pep band play,” Wensits said. “They were able to relax and find a good rhythm later in the first quarter and then that just carried over.”

Daffenberg led the Foxes with 22 points while Harrison added 18 and Nolan chipped in with 15.

Rochelle was energetic at the start of Saturday’s Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference matinée at Yorkville.

That suited the Hubs just fine until the Foxes decided it was time to get up and go themselves, which they did abundantly in a 73-51 victory.

“I thought Rochelle had a really good start with a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” Yorkville coach Kim Wensits said. “They got some quick points on us and it took us a while to settle down and get our transition game going, which is where we look to score the most.”

The game was deadlocked at 8-8 with 3:56 left in the first quarter, but it wouldn’t stay that close for very long.

The Foxes (15-1, 6-0) closed the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 20-10 lead.

There would be more of the same in the second quarter. The Hubs only scored 8 more points in the first half, while the Foxes erupted for 35 to take a 43-16 lead at halftime.

“One of our identities is executing our plays well and that’s something we’re really focusing on in practice,” Daffenberg said. “We know all of our games aren’t going to be like this and we need to execute in the bigger, closer games.”

OHS, YHS in Hoops for Hope fundraiser set for Jan. 28 SHAW MEDIA The communities of Oswego and Yorkville are once again coming together to participate in the Communities vs. Cancer Hoops for Hope charity basketball fundraiser. This event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 3:30 p.m. at Oswego High School, 4250 Route 71 in Oswego.

Festivities are planned for children and adults of all ages. The evening will feature games between

the Oswego High School and Yorkville High School boys and girls sophomore and varsity teams. The event also includes games for the kids, halftime and between-game contests, and a raffle for the chance to win various baskets filled with products and gift cards from area businesses.
