By TONY SCOTT tscott@kendallcountynow.com A candidate for Yorkville alderman has been kicked off the April ballot because he didn’t put page numbers on his candidacy petitions, a city electoral board has ruled.

Andrew Graham, 110 N. Conover Court, and Alejandro Hernandez, 2325 Titus Drive, both filed as candidates for Ward 4 alderman in the April 4 municipal election.

Mayor Gary Golinski, City Clerk Beth Warren and Alderman Diane Teeling, acting as the city’s electoral board, unanimously agreed Tuesday evening with an objection to Graham’s petitions filed by his opponent, Hernandez.

Hernandez argued in his objection filed with the city that Graham did not

number the two pages of his candidacy petition as mandated by the state’s Election Code. Hernandez cited instances in 2009 and 2011 where local candidates’ petitions were nullified because of this same issue.

Yorkville attorney Gregg Ingemunson, representing Hernandez, made the same argument during Tuesday’s hearing.

Aurora attorney Brian Pollock, representing Graham, argued that case law allowed petitions to be “substantially compliant” with the Election Code.

But City Attorney Kathleen Field Orr said various cases show that numbering pages is mandatory in order for a set of petitions to be valid.

Golinski said in his mind that it was an “open and shut” issue.

On the other hand, the electoral

board dismissed an objection to Hernandez’s petitions when it appeared that the objector had misread an address.

Resident Steven Urness had objected to Hernandez’s petitions, stating that two of his signatures were from people who were not registered voters.

Urness’s attorney, Pollock, told the board that he had checked the voting records of the residents at 2688 Lilac Way and that no registered voters were living there.

However, Orr pointed out that she and the board had read the address of the people who signed the petitions as 2658, not 2688. There were registered voters at the 2658 address, she said.

Orr said following the hearing that the parties can appeal the board’s ruling via the Kendall County Circuit Court.

Yorkville library Mini-Golf FUN Raiser set for Jan. 29 KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Friends of the Yorkville Public Library invite you to play mini-golf on Sunday, Jan. 29. An 18-hole course will wind through both floors of the library.

The family-friendly fourth annual Mini-Golf FUN Raiser will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last tee-off at 4 p.m.). The funds raised will be used to support children’s programs and the purchase of library books.

Cost is $5 a person, cash or check.

Children age 10 and younger must have adult supervision. There will be visits from the Merry Hearts Clowns, “Ozzie” from the Kane County Cougars and “Spikes” from the Joliet Slammers. Refreshments and activities will

be available at the “19th Hole.”

A variety of raffle prizes have been donated. Sixteen baskets are on display in the lobby of the library, and the raffle winners will be announced at the end of the golf day. Items include a handmade quilt, an American Girl Bitty Baby Doll, a ukulele and many more.

The Yorkville Sons of The American Legion is hosting its monthly breakfast fundraiser from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, at the Yorkville American Legion, 9054 E. Veterans Parkway.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD We reached out to Yorkville Mayor Gary Golinski to ask him about his top five goals for the city of Yorkville heading into the new year. Here is how he responded:

Mayor Gary Golinski of life. GC Housing has also submitted plans for construction that will lead to additional rental housing stock within the city. Cedarhurst Assisted Living Facility and Memory Care have submitted plans as well as an Enterprise Zone Application through the Upper Illinois River Valley Development Authority to receive additional funding to move forward with the project. The city continues to see residential development in existing subdivisions, including new areas of Grande Reserve.

Development has restarted in the Caledonia Subdivision and the city has interested parties inquiring about Whispering Meadows and Raintree Village residential subdivisions, as well.

Roads will always be a priority for the city as we see population and development increase. Many state routes are on schedule for construction in 2017. Planning for U.S. Route 34 west continues, with a potential letting in spring 2017. Expansion of Route 34 eastbound has begun. Planning for the

When 7-year-old Avery Anderson’s mom asked her what she wanted to do for her 8th birthday party, the Yorkville girl told her that she wanted her friends to bring donations to help others instead of gifts. Avery recently gave those birthday donations to the Kendall County Community Food Pantry.

Considerable planning and discussion goes into planning each calendar year for the municipality. Council and staff meet and discuss goals for the coming year in the fall and a plan is developed for achieving the actionable items out of the goal setting session.

Five goals for the United City of Yorkville for 2017 are as follows.

One of the goals is the continuation of extensive downtown planning and riverfront development. Acquisition of new restaurants such as the 1836 Drink Lab and Provisions will be coming soon to the downtown area. New downtown and riverfront wayfinding signage will be looked at, including design and location. Staff is continuing with further analysis of the Riverfront Park layout. The city is continuing work with the property owners to extend the downtown Tax Increment Finance District. Also, the city will be working to initiate actions within the Comprehensive Plan that was adopted in September 2016 for the downtown/ riverfront area.

Secondly, the city is continuing to pursue and see results in commercial, manufacturing, industrial and residential development. The city will focus on the Eldamain Road Corridor and the potential for industrial and manufacturing clients in that geographic area.

Go For It Sports has secured permits for the area along Galena Road. This project exemplifies facets of smart investments of funds, and will promote education, health and social opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to improve their quality

Prospects bright for continued business growth The new year brings with it some definite reasons for optimism concerning continued business development in the greater Kendall County area, based on the steady pace of new stores and industrial business openings here in 2016.

In Yorkville, perhaps the most significant economic development news was Mars opening an expanded production line for Skittles in June.

The expansion added 75 new jobs to the approximately 300 jobs already at the firm’s plant on city’s north side. Yorkville also saw its new home building permits outpace 2015’s numbers by August, which the city’s economic development consultant, Lynn Dubajic, said will help the city secure more retailers. More rooftops are among the things retailers are looking for when considering a new

location, Dubajic said. Yorkville’s downtown saw changes and growth in 2016, with the opening of new restaurants and the demolition of a number of vacant buildings that most would agree improved the aesthetics of the area.

In Oswego, village officials are expected to announce plans in the coming months for the redevelopment of the former Alexander Lumber yard property in the village’s downtown.

The old lumber yard has sat vacant and desolate along Washington Street (Route 34) smack dab in the middle of the village’s historic center for nearly a decade. Village officials are hopeful that a new, mixed-use development on the site, when eventually constructed, will serve to attract not only new businesses to the downtown area, but also generate additional customers

for existing stores and restaurants.

Meanwhile on Route 30 in Montgomery, 9er’s Grill moved into the former Applebee’s and the pace of industrial development accelerated with construction proceeding on the 52,000-square-foot Old Dominion Freight facility immediately west of the VVF (former Dial Corporation) plant. Old Dominion follows two other large firms to locate in the village over the past year, United Sugars and Michels Corporation. On the retail side, the village secured the opening of a Binny’s liquor store in the Ogden Hill shopping center on the village’s east side, while a car wash and other retail users located along Orchard Road on the village’s west side.

In Plano, ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held in October for the Groot Waste Transfer Station just

north of the Menard’s distribution center on Kendall Farms Road, while in Sandwich the future of the WOW movie theater was assured when it was purchased by the Classic Cinema chain. The new owners promptly remodeled and reopened the theater as Cinema 7 in September.

The business growth over the past year should be welcome news for county residents who have for too long been collectively carrying the lion’s share of the county’s property tax burden. Each new business that locates here helps broaden the property tax base, while new stores help boost local municipal sales tax revenues. In many cases the new businesses also provide yet another source of much-needed local jobs. May the positive trend of increased business activity continue here in 2017.

Midwest winter travel has always been strangely popular These days, individuals, couples and whole families think nothing of driving to O’Hare or Midway, and hopping a plane to Florida or the Caribbean, or California to escape the cold.

But winter travel wasn’t so easy once upon a time – and in fact not all that long ago – but strangely enough it was the preferred time for overland journeys during Illinois’ earliest colonial days.

The first European explorers made their way to Illinois from Canada, making use of the region’s extensive system of lakes and rivers. Louis Jolliet, the intrepid French explorer and mapmaker, and his companion, Father Jacques Marquette, S.J., guided the members of their small expedition consisting of two birchbark canoes, west from Fort Michilimackinac at the strait between Lakes Michigan and Huron, and then down the western shore of Lake Michigan to Green Bay in 1673.

From there, their course led them up Wisconsin’s Fox River and across the portage to the Wisconsin River, and then downstream to the Mississippi. Paddling down the Mississippi, they eventually reached the Arkansas River, where Joliet determined the Mississippi’s course was due south to the Gulf of Mexico and not southwest to the Pacific, plus fear of Spanish interference caused them to turn around and head back north to Lake

As they passed through the rich prairie lands along the river, both Marquette and Jolliet accurately predicted the region would someday make excellent farmland.

One of the things that made the land rich was the region’s extensive system of wetlands, with swamps and sloughs peppering the Illinois prairie, along with timbered groves. Until those wetlands were drained, they spawned millions of black flies, horse and deer flies, and mosquitoes by the tens of millions. First-person accounts by the hardy early explorers and missionaries unlucky enough to travel the prairies in summer are replete with complaints about the clouds of stinging and biting insects.

As a result, travel was mostly confined to the watercourses during the summer months, though even by keeping to the center of rivers, including the mighty Mississippi, was no guarantee of avoiding hordes of insects. Only during the fall and winter when the insects were dead and the landscape frozen was overland travel the least bit comfortable. If you can call making your way across Illinois’

tundra-like frozen landscape in winter “comfortable.”

French explorer and entrepreneur Robert Cavelier de LaSalle, for instance, conducted his first expedition to Illinois in the late fall of 1679 by sailing ship and then canoe. When financial reverses (including the loss of his ship, the Griffin) compelled him to return to Canada and France to settle accounts, he left the Peoria area in the very early spring of 1680, traveling overland across the frozen prairie, avoiding both the insects and the extensive swamps.

When LaSalle mounted his second expedition to colonize Illinois, this one successful, he set off in the very early spring down the Illinois River. It was so cold that the river was frozen solid, and the party mounted their canoes on runners, towing them down the frozen stream until they found open water south of Peoria.

Due to its isolation, Illinois was settled by Europeans very slowly. By the late 1700s, only a few hundred French residents lived in the small villages of Kaskaskia, Cahokia and Prairie du Rocher, stretching along the banks of the Mississippi in what is now southern Illinois.

When Virginia Gov. Patrick Henry sent Lt. Col. George Rogers Clark and 180 men to occupy the Illinois Country in the summer of 1778 to stop British-led Indian attacks on the western Virginia frontier, the expedition float-

ed down the Ohio River from Pittsburgh to their advance base at the site of old Fort Massac. From there, they walked across the southern pit of Illinois to the French villages on the Mississippi.

The tall prairie grass, the heat, and the insects made the march a hard one, but on July 4, Kaskaskia was captured without firing a shot. When the British counterattacked by capturing Vincennes, Indiana, effectively cutting Clark off from Virginia, the intrepid commander ordered a march across Illinois in February. During the march his small army had to deal with flooded streams – the Wabash had grown to three miles in width – but at least they didn’t have to cope with clouds of biting flies.

The state’s waterways remained the favored mode of transportation until Americans arrived in greater numbers during the first decade of the 19th century, when roads finally and gradually became important. The settlers who began arriving in Northern Illinois in the 1820s sometimes came by foot and horseback, but more and more often covered wagons hauled family possessions from the East along the National Road to Vandalia or on the Territorial Road from Detroit to Chicago before they arrived at the claims they had usually previously prospected months earlier.

Vernon Strong, chairman of the math department, told the board the program would have all district students in grade one through nine studying with a computer at least 15 minutes a month.

A freight train was starting to cross Route 47 about the time the fire trucks were rushing to the scene. Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Usry was able to the get the train stopped so the fire trucks could get through.

The Great Storm of 1967 started Thursday, Jan. 26 and by the time it settled down to just a wind blowing affair on Friday morning, the entire area was virtually paralyzed. About 20 inches of snow fell. A week before, temperatures hit 65 degrees.

January 1962 Rumors say that Route 126 will be straightened so that it will hit Route 47 at right angles, with a four-way stop at 47 and 126 and those so called safety islands that some engineer dreamed up to confuse the unwary motorist.

Continued from page 4 As all those Eastern farmers arrived, they almost immediately began draining the state’s extensive wetlands. The elimination of Illinois’ swamps and sloughs created additional farmland, and also drastically decreased the numbers of disease-car-

rying mosquitoes.

Malaria, sometimes called, swamp fever or the ague, was common among our early settlers, but as the swamps disappeared, so did the diseases connected with them.

Within a few decades of their arrival, the settlers had eliminated most of the native prairie grasses, drained the sloughs, and forever altered the environment of Northern Illinois.

Such profound changes always have negative and positive trade-offs. We’ll never again see native grasses and flowers stretching to the eastern horizon on Oswego Prairie in the spring.

And without the regulating influence of extensive wetlands on stormwater runoff, floods became more frequent and more destructive. But then again, fewer and fewer of us had to worry about contracting malaria during

Illinois’ muggy summer months.

And though we do it for very different reasons than did those early colonials, and while it’s a lot less arduous than it was in colonial days, it’s interesting that winter travel from Illinois is again popular.

He plans to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia in the Fall where he will study to become an engineer. Ryan is the son of Mike and Debbie Pizzo.

Darwin and Joanie Brown are celebrating their 60th year of marriage. Since their marriage on December 29th, 1956, they have been blessed with health, happiness, three children, six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Their children are Patty Brown of Aurora, Mark Brown of Yorkville, and Eric (Pam) Brown of Plano. The couple celebrated with a family reception.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record.

Seniors applied for consideration through the high school guidance office.

Co-Sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year Scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice. The 2017 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview.

Outside of school, he hones his theatre skills as a member of the Fox Country Players Theatre Arts Academy, and as a mentor and counselor with the Yorkville Middle School Summer Theatre Camp. When he’s not on stage, he’s a practicing member of the YHS Speech team, which he’s been involved in for four year. “My participation in plays, musicals and speech team has helped build my social abilities on and off stage,” Ryan said. “The performances themselves helped in my presentation skills, and off-stage I learned how to communicate ideas, build friendship and promote positivity.”

In addition to his theatrical pursuits, Ryan is involved in the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society and National Honor Society. He is an alter server at church and is taking honors and AP academic classes. He has said that all of these activities have helped prepare him for college in helping teach him to organize time and adjust his schedule. But, the biggest benefit of his involvement has been the way his activities have helped him cultivate communication skills, Ryan said. “I have always been strong in the mathematics and science fields. I believe that my extra-curricular activities have prepared me well for the presentations and discussions that will be ever prominent in the college and work settings,” Ryan said. “I believe that further into the future, my experiences with educating children in theatre will aid me in educating future generations of young minds, to strive for new and innovative ideas without fear of sharing them with the world.”

Man charged with ID theft SHAW MEDIA The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged a Yorkville man with felony identity theft.

Police said Kendall County sheriff’s deputies took a report for identity theft on April 7 where the victim stated her personal information had been used to set up residential utility services. The bills were never paid, leaving the victim with a large balance, police said.

Following an investigation, prosecutors charged Gerald Skowronski,

64, of the 5000 block of Waters Edge Court, Yorkville, with identity theft, a Class 3 felony.

Skowronski’s bond was set at $20,000, with 10 percent required to be Gerald posted to get out of jail, Skowronski police said.

Police said Skowronski was taken into custody without incident Dec. 28 and transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, where he posted bond. He currently awaits his next court appearance.

Those on the schedule are: Madison Court, between West Madison Street and the west end; Madison Street, between Morgan Street and the west end; South Main Street, between West Van Emmon Road and West Hydraulic Avenue; South Main, between South Bridge Street and West Ridge Street; West Washington Street, between West Morgan and South Main; Pavillion Road, between Fox Road and city limits; East Ridge Street, between the east end and Mill Street; Tower Lane, between Somonauk Street and the Public Works building; City Hall parking lots; Public Works parking lot; Beecher Center; and Library parking lots.

A progressive relationship with Oswego and Montgomery has resulted in several shared services between the municipalities. This will continue as all have seen positive results. The municipalities have added Montgomery into the public works equipment agreement. This allows the municipalities to share equipment and manpower across municipal lines. This was taken advantage of in the fall of 2016 and it worked

very well. Oswego and Yorkville have put out a job posting for purchasing manager that would look at procurement for both municipalities including bids and proposals. Interviews will be conducted in January 2017. The benefit of shared services is large and the municipalities will continue a strong relationship in the future.

The City Council has approved no increase in property taxes in Fiscal Year 2018 (paid in summer 2017). The city did unofficially adopt a plan to reduce its tax levy for fiscal years 2015 through 2018. This plan was a modified extension of the process began in Fiscal Year 2012 as a result of non-abated property taxes and the passage of the non-home rule sales tax referendum.

There were planned decreases between 2 percent and 1 percent from Fiscal Year 2015 through Fiscal Year 2018.

However, taxes decreased at a rate quicker that was expected (3 percent reduction in Fiscal Year 2015, 1.66 percent in Fiscal Year 2016 and 1.68 percent in Fiscal Year 2017). This made it possible for the City Council to not increase the property tax in Fiscal Year 2018.

The city is committed to achieving these goals in 2017. These goals are intended to set priorities and achieve results on important issues facing the city. By identifying these important issues, staff can implement a strategy to effectively, efficiently, and economically address these high priority goals.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Cut down tree to get drone Yorkville police took a report New Year’s Day at 3:39 a.m. of people trying to cut down a tree in an area east of Kelly Avenue and Redhorse Lane, causing approximately $100 worth of damage to the tree. The people were located and told police they were attempting to dislodge a drone they were flying that was stuck at the top of the tree by cutting the tree down, police said.

No complaints were signed, police said.

Domestic battery Yorkville police took a report Jan. 1 at noon from a father in the 400 block of East Barberry Circle who called police because his juvenile son was out of control and damaging items in the house, police said. The father said he was pushed while trying to take an electronic device from his son, police said. The father was not injured and did not want to press charges, police said.

Drinking boyfriend A woman at a home in the 2300 block of Iroquois Lane told police Jan. 1 that her boyfriend entered her house through a basement window because she did not want him at the house when he had been drinking alcohol. No complaints were signed and the boyfriend agreed to leave the house and stay with friends, police said.

Injured, cited in accident Yorkville police cited Jacob R. Gabel, 24, of the 300 block of Edgewood Drive, Minooka, with improper lane usage following an accident on Route 47 on Jan. 3. Gabel’s vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 47 and entered a center turn lane where a vehicle facing southbound was waiting to turn left into a driveway. Gabel’s vehicle struck the other vehicle head-on, and he was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora with injuries.

Yorkville resident shot in Aurora SHAW MEDIA Aurora police are seeking information on a shooting in the city on Dec. 28 in which a 17-yearold Yorkville male was critically injured.

Police said the shooting occurred around 10:55 p.m. in the 2000 block of Coral Avenue.

Police said they responded to a 911 call for a suspicious person who was banging on a front door and asking for help at a residence in the 1900 block of Coral. Upon arrival on Coral Avenue, police found the 17-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and a deep cut to one of his arms.

Police said they learned the shooting occurred in or near the teen’s Chevy Tahoe, which was found parked in the street in the 2000 block of Coral, and that he was shot by an unknown assailant believed to be male. After the shooting, both the victim and the shooter fled the scene.

started banging on a front door window trying to get help, and broke the window, which caused the cut to his arm, according to police. Police described the teen as “mostly uncooperative” when responding to officers as they rendered first aid to him before an ambulance arrived.

The teen was taken to an Aurora hospital where he underwent surgery for life-threatening wounds. He was stabilized but remains in critical condition. It is believed he will survive, according to police.

Police said they have no suspect description and drug or gang involvement cannot be ruled out as a motive.

Light Road arrest County sheriff’s deputies arrested Kevin William Debolt, 25, of the 2500 block of Hartfield Drive, Montgomery, in the 2000 block of Light Road in Oswego Township Jan. 1 at 7:09 p.m. on a charge of aggravated battery.

Inmate charged with battery County sheriff’s deputies arrested Stephawn Arkell Johnson, 22, an inmate at the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville, Jan. 1 at 9:40 a.m. on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated resisting a peace officer. Police said Johnson, who has a home address in the 600 block of South Lincoln Avenue, Aurora, would not comply with commands made by corrections deputies to exit an area of the jail to which he was assigned. Johnson physically resisted the deputies’ commands and was eventually restrained, police said.

One of the deputies received minor injuries in the incident and was treated at an area hospital. Johnson was also treated at the jail for a minor injury, according to police.

Campground domestic County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic battery incident at a campground in the 8000 block of Van Emmon Road in Oswego Township Jan. 1 at 4:49 a.m. Police said one of the individuals involved in the incident, a female, had facial

wounds and was transported to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora. The other individual, a male, also sustained facial wounds in the incident but declined a trip to the hospital, police said. The incident remains under investigation, according to police.

By Denise Freese As sound waves reach the inner structures of your ear, the vibrations become nerve signals that your brain interprets as sound; this is how you hear. The ability to hear allows us to enjoy music and other entertainment, communicate with others, and be warned of impending danger.

When you find yourself unable to hear clearly, it’s important to be checked by an audiologist, a doctor who specializes in helping patients hear better. Knowing what can contribute to hearing loss can also help people make better decisions throughout their lives.

Conductive hearing loss involves problems with the ear drum, ear canal, or the inner workings of the middle ear. It can usually be treated, depending on the cause. Allergies, colds, and ear infections can contribute to conductive hearing loss, usually by accumulating fluids in the middle ear that interferes with the movement of the eardrum. Impacted earwax,

benign tumors, or something stuck in the ear can also be contributing factors.

A perforated eardrum, a Eustachian tube that doesn’t function correctly, and malformation of the ear canal or outer/middle ear structures are additional potential causes of hearing loss.

Diabetes, along with circulatory, cardiac, or thyroid conditions can cause hearing loss, as can certain medications. Antibiotics, minor surgery, allergy medications, and treatment of other conditions can help reverse the effects of these issues.

Sensorineural, or nerve-related, hearing loss is caused by problems in the inner ear. This type of hearing loss is permanent, and can be caused by exposure to prolonged loud noises, or even just one loud explosive noise. Head trauma, autoimmune or viral diseases, and a malformed inner ear can also be factors. Meniere’s Disease, tumors, and general aging are additional potential causes of sensorineural hearing loss.

Assassination scam An Oswego Township resident filed an harassment by electronic communication report with the county sheriff’s office Dec. 28.

Police said the victim had received messages that someone had taken out a contract to have her assassinated. Police said the victim continued to received messages indicating the contract would be called off if the victim were to pay an undisclosed amount of money.

Police said the messages appeared to have been a scam and the victim did not provide the individual with any money or information.

Judge John McAdams said he will see his first cases come before the county’s drug court this month, after the Illinois Supreme Court certified the program.

The Illinois Supreme Court certified the Kendall County Drug Court, along with some other Illinois “problem-solving courts” at the end of November.

The Administrative Office of Illinois Courts adopted certain standards for “problem-solving courts,” which include drug court, mental health court and other related programs, at the beginning of 2016, McAdams said.

“We just followed the standards set by the Illinois Supreme Court, which

were really copied off of the best practices standards from the National Association of Drug Court Professionals,” he said. “Illinois just adopted the national standard, and Illinois wants everybody doing it the right way.”

The process to begin the drug court program started in November of 2013, when a group of judges met with representatives from the State’s Attorney’s OfJudge fice, the public defender, Timothy probation department, McCann sheriff’s office, and the county health department to discuss and plan the program.

Judge Tim McCann, who is part of the original drug court planning group, said the group started a year ago “grouping people we thought would likely be candidates for drug court.”

McCann said until the program was certified by the Supreme Court, they couldn’t use the term “drug court.”

“We were not able to conduct ourselves as a drug court until we got this certification,” he said. “We were not allowed to use the term ‘drug court’; it was simply another felony call.”

McAdams said a court call in drug court will be different than a typical drug arrest court hearing.

“In a normal court when the defendant is in front of judge, it’s two minutes if it’s a status date,” he said. “In drug court, they say the longer you spend with them, the better off your results are. So... it’s very, very different from regular court.”

McCann said the state’s goal is to reduce the prison population by using drug courts as alternative sentencing.

“The overall goal is to reduce the prison population,” he said. “That’s

why the state of Illinois is choosing to participating in funding this. The state’s position is, by entering into drug court, Kendall County is committing that we’re going to attempt to reduce the number of people that go to prison.

In its most basic terms, drug court is an alternative to facing a likely prison sentence.”

McCann said those who participate in drug court will be watched closely.

“There will be very close monitoring,” he said. “Somebody on a typical felony caseload that gets put on probation won’t see me for a year or maybe longer if they don’t violate their probation. With drug court, they’re going to be back very frequently, oftentimes weekly; that’s part of the program and that gets reduced over time. They’re going to get very frequent drug testing and checks of employment and housing status and those types of things.”

One suspect in custody, two others still at-large SHAW MEDIA Oswego police are continuing their investigation into the burglary of a cellphone store in the 2800 block of Route 34 in the village Dec. 30 at 3:45 a.m.

Police have arrested one man, Cortez R. Morrow, 34, of the 6000 block of Rhodes Avenue, Chicago, in connection with the incident.

Morrow has been charged with one count of burglary and driving on a revoked license, according to police.

Police said witnesses heard an alarm coming from the store and observed two men dressed in black running away from the store towards Douglas Road and a white

Nissan with Pennsylvania license plates that was parked on the road. The vehicle then drove off, but police later stopped the vehicle and Morrow was taken into custody.

Police said a window at the store was broken and merchandise worth in excess of $500 was taken.

Police described the two other men who were seen fleeing the store as African-Americans of medium build and height. Police said one of the pair appeared to be in his mid-30s with short hair and the other appeared to be in his 20s with wavy hair.

Anyone who may have information regarding the incident is urged to call police at 630-551-7300.

The victim subsequently provided her bank account information to the individual. Police said an investigation is underway.

The 10U Northern Illinois Reds have been busy this year practicing baseball, but they have also been practicing giving back to the community. The team volunteered at the Kendall County Community Food Pantry, collected for the Salvation Army and donated to Marilee Garrett of Oswego. Marilee is a 16-year-old leukemia survivor who is collecting money and toys for young patients at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Yorkville isn’t a team that sulks.

After Kaneland rallied from a 17-point deficit for the win over the Foxes on Dec. 27, Yorkville could’ve moped. Instead, they regrouped and defeated John Hope the next day.

The Foxes faced a much bigger challenge on Thursday in Plano’s 54th annual Christmas Classic, and once again rose to the occasion, beating Streator, 46-35, in a game they led from start to finish.

“Streator is a good basketball team and has some really nice players,” Yorkville coach Mike Dunn said. “Our kids played their butts off though, which really makes me proud as a coach. We practice really hard and try to be consistent with it and I think we’re really improving.”

Yorkville (6-5) jumped to a 7-0 lead and never allowed Streator to get closer than three points.

OTTAWA EDGES NEWARK Norsemen hang tough in Plano Christmas Classic title game

The ending didn’t go as planned either, but all told, the Norsemen had a successful performance during the 54th Annual Plano Christmas Classic.

Playing in the championship game for the first time since 2010, and vying for their first title since 1992, the Norsemen fell short against Ottawa, 48-37 at Plano’s Reaper Gym on Dec. 30.

Will Clausel, Cameron Myre and Dylan Patrick were all named to the all-tournament team, but the Pirates held Myre scoreless and Clausel to just an early basket. Myre was the only one to have a solid scoring night, leading the Norsemen with 16 points.

“This was just a different kind of game than we normally play. It was physical, and it was very hard for us,” Noresemen coach Rick Tollefson said.

“Coop [Ottawa coach Mark Cooper] does a great job with his kids, and that’s a great level of defense that they play at. You could see that we just couldn’t run an offense, got all tangled up many times due to their pressure, and frankly, they did a great job. That’s the way it works. We weren’t able to take that amount of physical play.”

As dominant at Ottawa was, the Norsemen still were within striking distance in the game late. Riding the momentum of a strong finish to the third quarter, Newark pulled to within 32-27, but Wyatt Hill hammered home a pair of three-pointers to make it a 38-27 game and pretty much seal it.

Still, they battled hard against the much bigger Ottawa squad.

Rewinding back to Newark’s tournament opener against Princeton on Dec. 27 and you’d see that the Norsemen nearly landed in the loser’s bracket.

They trailed by four points with under a minute left, but got a huge three-pointer from Patrick to pull within 59-58 before Clausel’s heroics.

Corey Jacobson snagged an offensive rebound and then sent a pass to Clausel who drilled a jumper from just behind the free throw line in the final seconds.

“Corey got a big rebound and I would not have been able to do that without him,” Clausel said.“I found myself open and knocked it down.”

Clausel finished with 22 points, Patrick had 13 and Myre added 11.

The Norsemen cleaned things up in a 51-37 win against Morris to advance to the semifinals.

Once again Clausel had a big night with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Myre added 11 points.

Arguably Newark’s finest moment in the tournament came in its 65-57 win against previously undefeated Burlington Central in the semifinals.

Zach Schutta punished the Norsemen for 31 points and 14 rebounds, but the Norsemen rode the combo of Clausel and Patrick who combined for 43 points. Clausel added seven assists.

The team won’t have much time to regroup. They’ll host Ottawa Marquette on Jan. 3 and Serena on Jan. 6.
