The name Arranmore comes from the island Arranmore five miles off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland. Shannon Greene’s family lineage, on her mother’s side originated from there and relatives still live there today. It’s a land where time slows down and life becomes simpler. Neighbors are family. I have been a resident of Oswego for almost 15 years. I have always been attracted to the rich history of Oswego and the beautiful historic buildings in the area.

This collage was created with 4 inch high invidual mini acrylic paintings. Each painting depicts a recognizable Oswego landmark at some point throughout Oswego’s history – the modern Route 34 bridge over the Fox River, The Little White Schoolhouse as it appears today, the church on the corner of Washington and Madison when it was known as the old Oswego Federated Church before the addition, a white barn on Route 71 representing rural Oswego, and The Oswego Post Office as it appeared on Main Street in the early days of Oswego. These Oswego landmarks have stood the test of time just as the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce.

Just as the village’s population has grown, the school district has seen tremendous growth and expansion.

Local retailers Jewel-Osco, Meijer and Wal-Mart are among the next largest employers in the village. Jewel-Osco has approximately 362 employees, followed

by Meijer with around 300 employees and Wal-Mart employing 260 people. The village’s retail growth has seen an increase in larger retailers as well as new smaller businesses in the community.

Oswego’s location within Kendall County,

its proximity to Kane and DuPage counties, as well as its access to major transportation make it appealing to those working in nearby areas and commuting from Oswego. Since its early days, Oswego’s location has been a feature drawing people to set down roots and enjoy the benefits of a small community, even as this small community has seen tremendous growth and expansion through the years.

came to the area in the mid 1950s and attracting people to the area for work and where they would begin to settle in the growing communities surrounding Montgomery.

Another large employer in the area is the food processor Carl Buddig, which acquired a manufacturing facility in Montgomery in 2018. The Montgomery location was the company’s fourth manufacturing site in Illinois. The facility added about 300 jobs to the area in 2018.

Within Kendall County one of the largest employers is Caterpillar, Inc, staffing around 2,500 with manufacturing work in Montgomery and Oswego. According to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity the next largest employer is the Mendard’s Distribution Center with around 600 employees followed by another manufacturing employer, Plano Molding in Plano/Sandwich. As the county has seen an increase in residents it has also increased retail business opportunities. Among the largest retail employees in the county is Wal-Mart which provides estimated 500 jobs within the county.

ALWAYS A CROSSROADS FROM HISTORIC RIVER CROSSING TO KENDALL COUNTY HUB, OSWEGO’S GROWTH HAS CENTERED ON ACCESS

Oswego emerged as a crossroads and through the years its location has played an important role in the growth and development of the community, some 50 miles west of Chicago.

The first American settlers arrived in the 1830s as they saw how Native Americans were able to cross the Fox River where it meets with the Waubonsie Creek, according to historian Roger Matile.

Matile is the director of the Little White School Museum in Oswego. Built in 1850 the museum was initially a church and later a school house. The museum offers visitors with an opportunity to explore the village’s history. When the galleries reopen this spring after renovations, there will be multi-media presentations including one on the Oswego Drag Raceway, alongside the village’s archives and artifacts.

According to Matile’s research, the first settlers were William Smith Wilson, his wife, Rebecca, and his brother-in-law Daniel

Pearce in the years 1832-1833. When two businessmen, Lewis Brinsmaid Judson and Levi F. Arnold arrived in 1834 they decided to call the new village Hudson and by 1836 the area was on a stagecoach line called the High Prairie Trail.

Township won a referendum to relocate the county seat to Oswego from Yorkville in 1845, however Yorkville reclaimed the county seat in 1864; Matile says noting it was more centrally located for those traveling within the county for business.

“It became a cross roads, as during the stage coach era it was one of the major stops in routes from Ottawa to Yorkville, or Ottawa to Naperville or up to Geneva,” Matile says.

Like many small communities, Oswego began to flourish and it also faced hardships. A fire destroyed many buildings on the east side of Main Street in 1867 but businesses would rebuild. When the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad decided to extend the Fox River Branch through the village in 1870 it proved to be another economic boost for the area. Years later the village further increased its desirability with the increased in state highways through town including Route 25, Route 71, Route 31, Route 34 (Ogden) and Route 30.

Matile writes that while they called the village Hudson, the U.S. Post Office called the village Lodi creating confusion and in 1837 there was a referendum to determine the area’s name and instead of using the prior names, the residents selected Oswego, after a city in New York.

With travelers along the river early settlers began to establish a commercial area including a hotel and the Kendall House and Smith House where travelers could eat, rest. With its population growing Oswego

Oswegoland Heritage Association in addition to his writing on the area for a local blog. His love of history is rooted in his family’s story of how they left their agricultural background in 1950s to move “into town” and join his grandparents who had also retired from farming in nearby Wheatland Township. Matile’s Queen Anne home built in 1908 has passed through five generations of his family and is currently a home to Matile’s son.

The village saw a post World War II boom as families, like Matile’s left their agricultural roots and moved into the Oswego’s city. Additionally Caterpillar, Inc. and Western Electric located facilities within Oswego Township, drawing more people to the area for work.

Matile says the sprawling Boulder Hill subdivision just north of Oswego would become one of the largest communities in the county.

As the housing boom emerged in the mid 1980s in nearby Naperville and Aurora people once again saw Oswego as a prime location close to transportation and jobs. Matile says the village trustees began to extend the footprint through annexations. In 1990 Oswego’s population was at 3,875 according to the U.S. Census. In less than 10 years this population would triple.

In 2005 the village’s estimated population was at 21,000 and with another major housing boom in the village’s population would continue to swell. Today’s population estimate hovers at about 36,000 Matile says.

And while the community has grown considerably through the years, residents like Matile says it retains its small-town feel and the charms of seeing friendly faces when shopping or taking in one of the many festivals and activities in the community.

“My wife and I graduated Oswego High School in 1964 and we still see get together with classmates and see people from school,” Matile says. “Even though it is a much larger community then when I graduated high school.”

EDUCATION Numerous studies have demonstrated the enormous impact that a quality public education has on income level, the area’s economic growth and the quality of life for those who call that community home. Oswego is fortunate to be the home of a strong public education system.

As the seventh largest among 852 public school districts in Illinois, Community Unit School District 308 remains one of the fastest growing districts in the state, with 22 schools (13 elementary, five junior high and two high schools) and more that 18,000 students.

About 20 minutes from Oswego, Waubonsee Community College has been providing quality educational programs and services since 1966. Transfer programs prepare students for transfer to baccalaureate degree-granting colleges and universities while workforce education and training is designed to meet the workplace needs of individuals and organizations.

Complementing the public education offered in the Oswego area is Rasmussen College. Regionally accredited and offering more than 50 career-enriching programs, Rasmussen is a private college that’s conveniently located in neighboring Aurora. With an emphasis on career-focused degrees, students also have the luxury of taking classes online, if they wish.

ith the emergence of alternative healthcare as an integral component of overall physical health, the Oswego community has been forward thinking in drawing alternative health providers – including chiropractors, acupuncturists and massage therapists – to the community in response the healthcare needs of its residents.

Kelly Taylor, LMT, is a licensed massage therapist in Oswego. An expert in helping people recover from pain and stress, and in helping them deeply relax, Taylor also enjoys working with athletes of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND IN OSWEGO

f you’re looking for something fun to do, then Oswego is the right place. The area boasts a host of outdoor recreation to fit the bill for just about everyone, no matter what your age. We’ve listed just a few here.

Lyon Farm, in Yorkville, home of the Kendall County Historical Society, sits on 39 acres donated by Frances Lyon in 1974. Surrounded by modern residential subdivisions, the restored farm buildings imported from nearby communities offer a glimpse of life in the United States long ago. They include the one-room Union School, Corrigan Brothers General Store and post office. Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Depot, Yorkville City Hall and others.

The farm is family-friendly, hosting special events annually, including Christmas at the Farm, Halloween on the Farm, a Fall Festival and more.

An Oswego area staple since 1954, Knollwood Gun Club, in Yorkville, offers skeet shooting for anyone from the novice to the most accomplished competitive shooters, while still maintaining a family friendly atmosphere. Knollwood operates three skeet fields and has a heated/air conditioned clubhouse. Knollwood Gun Club is open to the public on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm.

rom finding the perfect spot for a date night to making time for slow sips of coffee and a shopping stroll there is something for everyone in downtown Oswego “You can find a ton of stuff on Main Street,” says Megan Dell’Aringa, president of the Oswego Downtown Association. She and her mother are business owners of Floral Expressions and Gifts Inc. a 26 Main St. Dell’Aringa and Platt, moved their 18-year-old business from a nearby shopping plaza to the downtown area nearly 12 years ago and says it was the best move for finding a network of fellow businesses and enjoying the flow of customers who visit whether they are out running multiple errands, strolling through the downtown or attending one of the many festivals and events.

The Oswego Downtown Association is a collaboration of business owners who volunteer their time serving on the executive board as well as taking the reins of event planning and marketing. As a small business owner, Dell’Aringa says on any given day she can wear multiple hats, from handling customer service to inventory purchasing and beyond. With the Oswego Downtown Association she can collaborate with fellow business owners.

Oswego Downtown Association have several signature events throughout the year.

Visitors of all ages will enjoy the annual Bunny Hop Saturday, April 13. With car shows, festivals and the annual farmers market there is no shortage of reasons to come out to the downtown during the warm months while the Oswego Downtown Association members are excited to once again host the Fox Fall Fest on Sunday, Oct. 6 and there will be Trick or Treating in the downtown Saturday, Oct. 26.

DELTA SONIC OSWEGO WILL BE ITS “PREMIER” CHICAGO AREA LOCATION

Dell’Aringa grew up in Oswego and remembers when the back of her house looked out to open farm fields. Still, while the community has grown tremendously she says it retains its small town feel and no place better exemplifies that than its downtown. Dell’Aringa’s floral shop is located in a historic building that used to house Schuler’s Drug Store.

She says customers tell her stories of when they used to come to the shop and buy penny candy.

Customers are seeing the value in shopping local, Dell’Aringa says. She enjoys being a part of her customer’s celebrations from birthdays to anniversaries and, as a small business owner takes the time to get to know her customers through the years.

“We invest in our customers and they invest in us,” Dell’Aringa says.

While the Oswego Downtown Association has a spotlight on the downtown business district, the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce serves the entire business. This year marks the chamber’s 35th anniversary and Angie Hibben, president of the Chamber of Commerce says much like the community, the chamber has grown considerably through the years.

The role of the chamber is to help promote local businesses, while also providing local businesses with networking and educational resources.

At the chamber Hibben and her board members celebrate new businesses, provide marketing resources and networking opportunities between businesses and one of her favorite opportunities is connecting Power Partners, two businesses that can work together to benefit each other.

“So we can all grow together,” Hibben says.

The chamber boasts more than 500 members with 300 members from Oswego and the remaining members residing in 22 communities in and around Oswego. The chamber’s Hometown Expo, Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Oswego High School Field House is a great way to learn more about the area’s business community and enjoy a day full of activities for the entire family.

Hibben and her husband moved their young family to Oswego in 1986 and she has witnessed the village’s tremendous growth through the years. She says while its business and residential populations have expanded considerably she still finds the small town mentality that first brought her to the area.

“It’s still a small town and you still have the community, the families who band together to fill each others’ needs,” Hibben says. “We have the advantages of a larger community but it’s still a community that works together.”

In the words of Delta Sonic itself, “The story began in 1967 in the honeymoon capital of the world, Niagara Falls, NY. Delta Sonic became known as the ‘kissing clean car wash.’” Fast forward to 2019 and Delta Sonic has 38 car washes in three states — New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania, with six more currently under construction.

In approximately 15 months yet another Delta Sonic will open, this one in Oswego, and it will be Delta Sonic’s flagship facility.

“It will be the largest Delta Sonic in the Chicago area.,” says James A. Boglioli, attorney and Director, Right to Build Northeast US, Benderson Development Company, LLC. Benderson Development is owned by Ron Benderson, who started Delta Sonic back in the ’60s, making continued improvements over the years, based on customer input.

“We manufacture all our own soap in Buffalo and ship it out to Chicago,” Baglioli says. “We actually build a lot of the car wash equipment ourselves. It’s a family-owned company.”

Delta Sonic hired chemists and engineers to develop its special, ph-balanced soap formulas and mild lotions, and is known for its gentle touch-less washes.

The Oswego facility, which will be located along Ogden Avenue, will be the largest in the area. Approved by the village last year, the multi-building car wash is scheduled to break ground March 1 and will include 50,000 square feet of buildings, including a convenience store with drive-thru and restaurant — 9,200 square feet, a 5-bay oil change building — 6,750 square feet, an express detail building — 9,300 square feet, 20 interior climate-controlled vacuum stations — 13,725 square feet, gas pumps with a canopy including 16 fueling stations, car wash and prep building for prewash — 10,000 square feet. Outdoor vacuums will be available for use at no cost.

“Areawise, it’s the largest lot size for a Delta Sonic, and that enables us to offer a number of additional services that are not available at other locations,” says Baglioli. “It has a faster car wash than other car washes as the result of additional prep booths we’ve added so the cars move faster through the car wash, reducing wait time and stack time.

Technologically, it’s going to have solar panels and water recycling so environmentally it’s headed in the right direction.

“We’re very excited about this site,” Baglioli says. “When we get done it’s going to be our premiere car wash in the Chicago area. We can’t wait to get started in March.”
