Meet Oswego's new economic director

NEW ECONOMIC DIRECTOR

Kevin Leighty takes on role with village of Oswego

In May the village welcomed Kevin Leighty as its new economic director. In his role he will balance supporting current businesses and recruiting new ones to the area.

Leighty’s arrival to the village was met with a busy agenda and within days of turning on the lights to his office he was out and about meeting members of the business community, taking part in events for the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce and getting to know the community. “In that first month he really had to get up to speed on available properties and put together a game plan,” said Oswego Village Administrator Dan Di Santo Oswego has seen tremendous growth in its business community. Last year it had record high collection of sales tax, to support the community, Di Santo said. “We are a growing community. People want to be move here and be here and that brings new restaurants and retail that want to be here too,” Di Santo said. There are still opportunities for more new businesses and that will be one area of focus for Leighty. Leighty said he is excited to be a part of Oswego and be able to support the business community while finding ways to bring more businesses to the area as well. “One of the reasons why I wanted to come here was the opportunity. I saw all the exciting things going on here,” Leighty said. Prior to Oswego, Leighty worked for more than seven years for the Village of Schaumburg in its Economic Development Department, helping to recruit, retain and assist businesses. His time in Schaumburg served as great learning opportunity with the diverse business community. “Schaumburg is pretty diverse with not only retail but also more than 12 million square feet of industrial businesses,” Leighty said. Leighty said he’s always had an interest in government, and it was while pursuing a degree in public administration and working with the city of Elmhurst that he connected with the department of Economic Development. “I realized how important economic development could make on a city,” Leighty said. In addition to his master’s degree in public administration he is pursing an additional certification in Economic Development. He will also maintain a great relationship with the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce and the greater businesses community, working to support the existing businesses. He said economic development is a balancing act. “The chamber is a great place,” Leighty said. “It’s very active with a lot of members. We want to help the business community thrive as much as possible.”
