egun in 1924 by the Newark Mother’s Club, it was a much different place.
A group of women from town and country met to form the Newark Mothers Club, a forerunner of the Newark Women’s Club. One of their main projects was a small lending library. It was first housed in the upper floor of a building at Front and Johnson Streets. Staffed by volunteers, it had limited hours. Over the years it changed locations several times.

volunteer help from several retired teachers and Women’s Club members. The community supported the library with cash and memorial donations for shelves, card catalogs and furniture. In the early 1960s, Charles B Phillips made a donation to the Newark Women’s Club that enabled them to build a new building. Expenses for operations were still funded by dinners and donations. The new building was dedicated and opened. Books (according to stories) were carried up the street from the previous building Today it is a full service library in the heart of town. t’s been 10 years since American Express established Small Business Saturday–the Saturday after Thanksgiving–as a way to promote small businesses. Since then, the movement has generated more than $103 billion in local sales, and its popularity in many aareas has extended it into a two-day event. Angie Hibben, president/CEO of the Oswego Area Chamber of Commerce. “We had a welcome center, maps, goodie bags and a raffle.” Facebook postings, flyers and e-blasts all contributed to an influx of shoppers. “We’re also seeing more and more groups of people shopping,” says Hibben. “They’re making a day of it. It’s becoming an event, and often they become return customers. Every year we see more focus on shopping small.” John Purcell owns Ace Hardware stores in both Oswego and Yorkville, a family business for nearly 50 years. Purcell also happens to be Yorkville’s mayor. “The great thing about small businesses is that many of the owners live in the community and the money generated pours back into the community,” says Purcell. “Almost every dollar earned stays local, and there’s a commitment to the community. Many of them
volunteer for the school board or the PTO or the Lion’s Club or the Knights of Columbus. The people who work here usually live here, as well. Yorktown has hundreds of small businesses. For me, as a local business owner, it’s a good way to interact with the public. Customer service is something we can resolve without corporate red tape. Our local stores are frontline people. There are a lot of advantages.” Winding Creek Nursery & Garden Center in Millbrook is fourthgeneration family-owned, and in the same location since 1957. Winding Creek holds its open house on Small Business “weekend” “I think our customers like to shop here because it’s more convenient and people like the fact that they’re supporting the community and they don’t have to fight the crowds in a big box store,” says co-owner Penny Monkemeyer. “We help carry things out to people’s cars and provide more one-on-one. They keep
coming back through the years and become like family. I love it when people come in and tell us stories of their generations.” “Small Business Saturday is a day we feel the love of our community supporting us and making it a point to shop local,” says Megan Dell’Aringa, co-owner of Floral Expressions & Gifts, in Oswego since 2001, and president of the Oswego Downtown Association. “It’s fun to watch it grow each year. It’s becoming an entire weekend event. “You can find a little bit of everything in our downtown,” says Dell-Aringa.” We’re starting to feel the shift in people shopping locally. We know you, your personal style, and we give you one-on-one attention, and more money goes back into the community when people come back and shop yearround. “You can shop, have coffee and stay for dinner.”

Haul Out The Holly TRADITIONAL COLORS AND VINTAGE FAMILY HEIRLOOMS ARE FILLING HOLIDAY DÉCOR THIS SEASON
S
ome folks can hardly wait for the holiday season to begin, hauling out those Christmas decorations before the Thanksgiving turkey is even on the table. But for others, especially first-time homeowners or firsttime holiday hosts, the task can seem daunting.
BY PAT SZPEKOWSKI “We have so many cultures and multi-cultural families in the area, that it’s important to make sure everyone gets in the festive feel. But for the main decor, it’s traditional all the way,” she says.
Don’t let the thought of creating a winter wonderland make you anxious. Steal some ideas from a few local experts who are more than happy to share their favorite holiday decor tips.
This year, flashback to simpler times, as well, with vintage touches and family items. “Bring your old sleds out and put on your dining room table,” Frantz adds. “ Use your Christmas family heirlooms and put banners in your Christmas trees.”
Trends in color for holiday decorating run the gamut across the color wheel. “This year seems to be very nostalgic with a modern/ chic twist,” says Alexandra Almodovar, owner of A Lady and Her Tools in Oswego. “The classic red, greens, and gold are in, but dark blues, greys, forest greens and burgundy are big this year.

“Also the classics are coming back with red colors”, says Ronda Frantz, owner of Bittersweets in Sandwich. “If less is more to you and you want to use your everyday items, just place some florals and candles along with them. Put a red throw on your couch, but choose a red that you can use again for the 4th of July.

Place a garland of greens and berries and add snowflake ornaments into the garland.” Griesmann believes in making the most of what you have, as well. “Use your teacup collection to decorate your Christmas tree,” she suggests. “Use old black and white family photos to dress up a garland on your mantel, or pull those old wooden toys from your closet to decorate under your tree or as part of a whimsical centerpiece.” Simple country and farmhouse decor is a favorite with Pat Almy of Farmer’s Daughter in Sandwich. “A real craft look with vintage, country | NOVEMBER 2019 |

antiques and farmhouse barnwood accents is always popular,” says Almy. “Tablescapes can include lanterns, cards, candles, and garland on lace runners and doilies. Country-style silicone bulb lighting and silicone Santas have that Americana feel. “As far as color, I like the icy-blue and green look. Just add a snowman so your decorating can extend throughout the winter season.”

ome families have holiday baking and cooking traditions that can be traced back for generations. For others, it’s as simple as sitting in pajamas and ordering online from a local bakery, restaurant or caterer. Passionate about cooking and baking since she was a child, Marlene Zebleckis opened Sweet Temptations Dessert Company in 2004 after graduating from culinary arts school. Initially operating out of her home, she continued to grow as word spread and more customers sought out her cakes, cookies, bars, cheesecakes and more. After renting a church kitchen for a few years, she opened her current storefront in December 2015. “One of our favorite recipes is my mother-in-law’s apple slices,” she said. “Think slab pie with a cinnamon apple glaze.” Her favorite cooking tradition occurs at Thanksgiving where about 25-30 people gather and share their favorite made-

from-scratch dishes. For some, opening their own place was the next step after a long road in the hospitality industry. For others, it was a new career path. Friends and family had been the recipients of Steve Buresh’s delicious cheesecakes for years. But after he lost his job and struggled in finding a new one, he opened the first Steve Buresh’s Cheesecake Store and Sandwich shop. He opened a store in Oswego last year. Opening Upper Crust Catering in 2003 was the culmination of plenty of hard work and great success for chef Mitch Morrell, who worked as an executive chef a tprivate country clubs in Florida and Illinois before opening his full service catering company in Yorkville. Jodi Behrens opened The Village Grind Coffee & Tea Co., 23 years ago, because Oswego needed it and she wanted it. “Our inspiration for opening was to have a cozy, homey place for people to share fellowship, coffee and laughter,” she said.
Angie Davis was in the banking, not baking, industry but had previously worked at her aunt’s country market/gas station, which had a bakery. Long story short, she ultimately met her husband there, got married and started family. When her aunt retired, and with her own children older, Davis decided to turn it into Angie’s Sugar Buzz and today it’s one of the most popular spots in Sandwich. “God had a plan for me,” she said. “I never dreamt of owning a bakery, but I’vea lways been creative and artistic so I’m passionate about baking and decorating.”
rave about them and we sell them in sheets. And our pies are also popular, especially for Thanksgiving.”
Now’s the time to get one of Angie Sugar Buzz’s favorite holiday treats – pumpkin bars.
While the turkey sandwich with homemade relish and toasted pecans is a popular choice at The Village Grind, at the Behrens home, holidays are complemented with son Nate’s smoked cornish game hens, featuring a variety of spices and sauces.
“They are amazing,” Davis said. “People

ell-regarded food blogger Maria Lichty, in her first cookbook, describes Black Bean-Quinoa Enchilada Bake as one of her family’s favorite meals. Lichty’s recipe (below) is one of 115 representative dishes in “Two Peas & Their Pod” (Grand Central Publishing). The flavorful recipe satisfies meat-lovers, vegetarians and kids. It makes the kind of dinner fare that can easily be prepared on a weeknight but also freezes well if one is planning ahead, Lichty writes. Other recipes run the gamut from pumpkin-chocolate chip streusel muffins for breakfast and kale and wild rice salad with maple-mustard vinaigrette to a main-course barbecue chicken pizza. Under an easy entertaining heading readers will find guidance on running an ice cream sandwich party.

We’re all in this together.
In a medium saucepan, combine the quinoa and 2 cups water, bring to a boil over medium heat, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 15 minutes, until all the water is absorbed. Remove the pot from the heat and fluff the quinoa with a fork. Cover and set aside.
State Farm® has a long tradition of being there. That’s one reason why I’m proud to support the Community of Oswego.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic and jalapeno and saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the bell peppers and corn and cook and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in the lime juice, chili powder, cumin and cilantro and remove the pot from the heat. Sea son with salt and pepper to taste.
Here to help life go right.®
In a large bowl, combine the cooked quinoa and black beans. Add the sauteed vegetable mixture and enchilada sauce and stir to combine. Fold in ½ cup of the shredded cheese. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with the remaining 1½ cups shredded cheese and cover the pan with aluminum foil. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the edges are bubbling. Let the casserole cool for 10 minutes. Garnish with your toppings of choice and serve warm with tortilla chips, if desired.

s a longtime journalist and a shorter-time dad, there are certain sensations that have just become second nature.
Consider the lack of funds in the bank. Some parents may recall a time before their joyous additions arrived, when their account balances boasted a few more zeroes after an initial whole number and before the decimal point.

But as one who spent much of the past few decades getting by on a byline in a local paper and living on the accompanying paychecks, I can attest the shock from the new financial demands placed by new arrivals is significantly lessened by the shorter distance for that whole number to travel to reach the decimal.
This is not necessarily as bad as it sounds. Sure, one could perceive being taken for granted as a sign of disrespect. And certainly everyone likes to feel appreciated, from time to time. It’s why, even years after leaving local

newspapers, I still harbor a collection of notes and other trinkets given through the years from readers and interview subjects, who took the time to say thanks – and why every hug and handshake from many others remains emblazoned in my memory. But most will never take the time to say thank you in any real way – and that’s OK. The way I see it, when some choose to “take someone for granted” it means that someone has become such an important and ingrained aspect of their existence, they can’t imagine their life, their family or their community, without that someone in it. This thought had time to churn recently while working on a home plumbing project. I’ll spare you the details, but it involved an inordinate amount of time spent lying on my back, my head and shoulders inside the cavity of the cabinet of the bathroom vanity, the pain in my neck rising along with my blood pressure and frustration as I tried in vain to align a new drain and trap, to transport waste water from the sink to a sewer pipe in the wall. After a couple hours, realizing any further flailing about beneath the sink could result in further potential water damage to the base of the vanity, my next steps found me darkening the door

of the local hardware store. Sure, I could have gone to the big box home improvement outlet down the street. Certainly, such outlets have taken more than their fair share of those zeroes from my bank account through the years. But for this kind of project, more expert advice and patience was needed – commodities I knew would be in stock with the grizzled veterans of the local shop. And they did not disappoint, taking the time to talk through the problems with me, piecing together a solution that, as of this writing, has withstood the test of time. Later, while mindlessly enjoying the smooth and drip-free flow of water once more from my bathroom sink, my thoughts returned to that store’s door, and the sign posted on it, proclaiming my good fortune at having my problems arise before 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday. While on this occasion, I found amazing helpful hardware folks inside, creating a true value, there will be others in which these kinds of projects won’t fit neatly inside a workaday window of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, while the big box home improvement folks up the street will. Multiply this by dozens of shopping trips per year, and suddenly even a

math-challenged journalist can run the numbers, and recognize the peril faced by these kinds of local treasures. As a dad, my young ones should be able to presume I’ll always be there, ready to help, any time of the day or night. But these kinds of local mom-and-pop establishments can’t be taken for granted. Without support from their neighbors and their community, like so many local newspapers, these pillars of the community may one day turn out the lights for good. For now, though, on behalf of busy parents and homeowners throughout these communities, allow me to kindly and gently ask these amazing local shopkeepers to please, find a way keep the lights on and doors open a bit later, to give us the chance to experience the difference a local touch can make.
Home For The Holidays.. As you decorate your home for the holidays and enjoy time with family and friends, I want to thank you for the pleasure of helping you make your new house a home. May you fill it with traditions, love and wonderful memories. Happy Holidays!
Jonathan Bilyk writes about the triumphs and travails of being a modern-day dad who legitimately enjoys time with his family, while tolerating a dog that seems to adore him. He also doesn’t really like the moniker “Superdad” because it makes it sound like he wants to wear his undergarments on the outside of his pants. (Also, the cape remains on back order.)

Don’t let
hidden holiday allergies ruin your good cheer
W
hile everything may seem merry and bright, if you have asthma or allergies, this is when you need to be cautious. A season full of tradition and good cheer can often come with hidden allergy triggers if you’re not aware and prepared. The experts at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology share the most common hidden holiday allergies you should be aware of:
The holidays are a time to gather for food, friends and festivities.

which can cause nasal allergies to flare. Take time to rinse off live trees before you bring them in. If you have an artificial tree and decorations that you use every year, clean them to remove dust and potential mold.
CANDLES AND FIRES Although many people light candles to enhance the holiday atmosphere, those scented candles can quickly trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, including headaches, watery eyes and aggravated noses. Wood burning fireplaces, while stunning during the holidays, are also a trigger due to smoke. Consider flameless candles and an electric fireplace, which have the calming appearance, but no scent or smoke to make you cough or wheeze.
HUGS AND KISSES You enjoy seeing your friends and relatives during the holidays, but you may want to reconsider all the hugs and kisses, which can easily spread germs. Flu shots are available now, and it’s not too early to get yours - before flu and holiday seasons are in full swing. If you have asthma, it’s particularly important to wash your hands thoroughly and regularly. If you have an egg allergy you may have been told in the past not to get the flu shot. But years of studies have shown the vaccine is safe and does not contain enough egg protein to cause an allergic reaction, even in people with severe egg allergy.
TREES AND WREATHS Fresh fir trees and wreaths are beautiful, but some people have contact skin allergies to a substance called terpene, found in the sap of trees. What’s more, some live trees still have mold spores and pollen on them,
EATS AND TREATS Holidays are a time to gather to enjoy delicious meals and tasty treats. If you have food allergies, you must be particularly vigilant about knowing what’s inside each item. Some people are sensitive to even

trace amounts of certain foods, and this can be particularly concerning for bakery goods prepared in commercial kitchens. Always ask before you eat something new, and be an advocate for your children if they suffer from allergies. When in doubt, if you have food allergies it’s best to turn down a holiday treat with unknown ingredients. DUST AND DANDER If you are allergic to indoor allergens like dust, mold and dander, you probably diligently clean your home. But that doesn’t mean the host of the party you’re attending does the same. Many of these triggers are invisible, so even a home that appears clean can cause that dreaded runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes for allergy sufferers. If you’re attending a party, or traveling to see friends, consider packing allergy medicine just in case you start to feel symptoms from triggers tugging at your good time. Before your social calendar fills up, consider

hosting a holiday event yourself. Even though entertaining takes work, it adds a level of control, so you don’t have to worry about allergy concerns. You get to cook with foods your family can safely eat and decorate with flameless candles and other allergy-friendly decor. Plus, you know your house is free of Fido’s fur or hidden dust bunnies. If people offer to bring food, make sure they know of any allergy concerns, or consider putting them in charge of other items, such as holiday napkins or paper plates for the kids. Have questions about an existing or potential allergy for you or a loved one? Allergists are the best-trained medical professionals to treat allergies and asthma, and can help you live the life you want. With the amount of surgery and reconstruction that I had to undergo, I would probably not have been able to go through it without sedation. My experience was great. I was not aware of the entire appointment, so I remember no pain. Dr. Kim’s team made me feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the entire process. I think sedation is a wonderful way to do major dental work, and if you are not great at dealing with the fear of going to the dentist. Patient D.S.
