hat had been a balmy and mild November quickly changed last Friday and Saturday as a cold front and then a snowstorm struck northeastern Illinois. Snowfall totals for Kendall County ranged between three and seven inches while, according to the National Weather Service, a record 11.2 inches of snow fell on Chicago. The heavy, wet snow kept plow crews busy Friday night and throughout the day on Saturday.

Much of the snow was expected to melt today, Thursday, as temperatures were predicted to reach into the low 50s.

By KATHY FARREN news@kendallcountynow.com A teacher, two parents and two students addressed the Yorkville Board of Education at their meeting Monday evening, urging them to settle the teachers contract to avoid a Dec. 2 strike.

They received their wish late Tuesday night as the board reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with the district’s teachers’ union.

All of the speakers drew extended applause and some standing ovations from the 200 or so people in attendance.

Yorkville High School senior class president Francis Papa told the board, “If you truly recognize teachers, then compensate them with what they deserve.”

He said it wasn’t right that administrators’ paychecks were so much more than teachers, when it was teachers who worked with students teaching lessons and giving advice. He also stated that the additional hour of time that the district is asking teachers to attend meetings or training each week after school would cut into the time they are available to give students additional help.

Papa recited a list of student activities which would be canceled during just a one-week strike – in-

cluding athletic events, the Math Team competition and performances by the Madrigal Singers. Teams would have to forfeit games, he said, adding “We will sacrifice for teachers, but after six months without results, it’s time for action.”

Tom Brophy questioned information presented by the district administration explaining how the salary changes would affect staff members who make $100,000 a year.

He said the district’s 408 teachers have salaries averaging $48,000, while administrators’ average $128,000 and principals $88,000.

Brophy said the Yorkville Education Association, representing teachers, provided five pages of information on their position in negotiations and called the district’s 100 pages “smoke and mirrors.”

“It seems like you’re pushing them through the door. What you’re doing is not right,” Brophy said.

Yorkville Middle School teacher Tamara Eaton said she has taught in the district since 1987 and knows the community’s history.

“The only way to build that is through longevity and loyalty to a district,” she said.

Now she said the board’s proposal calls for a drastic cut in what teachers about to retire receive.

Currently teachers get a six percent pay increase for their final four

“We aren’t asking anything exorbitant, just maintain the six percent in our last years of service,” Eaton said.

Patrick Carter, the parent of two students at Grande Reserve Elementary School, referred to the district’s proposed tax levy and the fact that new construction is not subject to the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (PTELL), commonly called the tax cap.

“I would think the board would want more new construction. One way to get it is to draw more people to good schools,” he said.

Carter noted that when Papa spoke, he learned what he needed to make a good presentation from teachers. He said that the district’s

last teacher contract raised beginning teacher pay, however now 33 percent of the district’s teachers are non-tenured, newer teachers.

When teachers look at what their pay will be over a more than 30year career, they see they can do better in other districts, he said.

“Eventually we will be left with a whole bunch of teachers without experience,” Carter said, adding he compared Yorkville salaries with other districts’ and found Yorkville at the bottom.

He questioned time teachers were pulled away for meetings and training that wasn’t needed.

“The amount spent on administrators is outrageous and yet teachers have the most time with students. Yet you don’t want to give them the time to spend with students,” Carter concluded.

A member of the YHS Madrigal singers expressed concern about the possibility that a Dec. 2 strike would cancel their performances on Dec. 4, 5 and 6.

“It would break my heart if we couldn’t have it because of a strike,” after so many hours preparing for it, senior Mackenzie Burke said.

She added that students are talking about a possible strike all the time.

“It’s affecting me and other students,” she said.

Yorkville reviews levy request Weighs separating city, library portions

By DAN WAITT dwaitt@shawmedia.com The Yorkville City Council on Tuesday held a public hearing on the proposed tax levy, which is expected to hold the line on the amount homeowners pay in property taxes for the city portion of their tax bill.

City Administrator Bart Olson said the total levy request for the city is $3.17 million. That compares to about $2.99 million extended in the previous year.

“We always ask for more than we think we are going to get,” Olson said.

One of the areas of discussion for the city this year is whether to separate the city portion of the levy from the Yorkville Public Library portion of the levy.

According to Olson’s memo to the council, the property tax bill lists the city and the library as two distinct itemized charges. The city’s (capped

and uncapped) estimated levy extension is projected to be 1.91 percent lower than it was in the 2014 levy year (payable in 2015). The library (capped and uncapped) levy is projected to be 1.09 percent higher than it was in the 2014 levy year (payable in 2015).

Based on these two statements, the combined amount that each property owner pays to the city and to the library should be lower than the prior year’s tax bill, assuming that the property’s equalized assessed value does not exceed the overall increase in aggregate EAV (currently projected at 3.11.)

The library’s levy request is for 0.15 per $100 in EAV. At issue is whether the city should apply the tax cap to the library. However, that would result in about a $7,000 fund reduction to the library.

Library Board members Sandy Lindblom and Barb Johnson spoke in favor of keeping the library rate at 0.15 per $100 of EAV. Lindblom noted that the library structure is now eight years old and in need of painting. Earlier this year, the library board needed to re-

move some trees in order to improve drainage from the gutters.

Lindblom said the library has traditionally had control of its levy amount and its expenditures and that Illinois Supreme Court rulings have upheld the library boards’ authority.

“Our staff has not had a salary increase in five years,” she said.

While the council will not have to decide on the levy until December, some spoke in favor of keeping the library levy at its current rate.

“I don’t see this as a problem ... keeping it at 0.15,” Mayor Gary Golinski said.

Alderman Carlo Colosimo said that the city will have to address the issue at some point in the future, as the levy rate for the city continues to drop, while the library remains at a fixed rate.

Olson said the city has unofficially adopted a plan to reduce its tax levy for fiscal years 2015 through 2018.

A homeowner with a house valued at $150,000 would likely see a reduction in their tax bill of about $5, based on the preliminary estimates.

BRIEF Sex offender arrested on registration charge

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged Joseph Williams, 51, of the 1000 block of U.S. Route 30, Aurora, with one count of unlawful failure to register as a sex offender, a Class 2 felony, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office reported that Aurora police took Williams into custody on Nov. 18. He has since been released on a $10,000 bond, pending a court appearance early next month.

The charge against Williams, a registered sex offender, stems from a sheriff’s office investigation. In seeking to verify Williams’ address, sheriff’s deputies received information that he had failed to notify the sheriff’s office of an address change with within three days as required under state law.

we are keeping our families, our students and our teachers without a disruption in their learning,” Collins said, adding, “There were obviously concessions made but in the grand scheme of things every teacher has to look at the contract and see how it will impact their teaching and their lives to make that decision for them. It’s difficult for me to say whether it is 100 percent fair for everybody.”

If the contract is ratified by the YEA soon, the Board of Education will consider a vote of approval later this month.

Dr. Robert Brenart, a Board of Education member, said he felt compromise was made and neither side got everything they completely wanted. He added that both sides are relieved to avoid a strike.

“It is certainly a feeling of satisfaction that we aren’t going to disrupt the children and I’m sure both sides, I know, felt strongly about that,” Brenart said.

The two sides had been attempting to negotiate a new contract since October of 2014.

“We can’t do it this way again.

It is a very poor method of negotiation and we label this like shuttle diplomacy and I just don’t think it works,” Brenart said. “There has to be ongoing discussion and an inclusion and desire for both parties to be included in just what the budgetary issues are.”

Brenart added that he doesn’t anticipate any hard feelings from the prolonged negotiations.

“We’re all adults here. I know on the board’s part … you just move on,” he said.

Both Brenart and Collins said they also wanted to avoid a strike because it would have impacted upcoming arts and athletic programs scheduled at the school.

“We’ve got a couple big music events coming up … that group of people would have not been very happy,” Collins said.

Neither Collins nor Brenart wanted to talk about the exact details of the new contract.

Brenart did say that pension issues in light of what is happening at the state level continue to be a concern.

Teachers had been working

without a contract since June and the two sides have been negotiating for about a year. Sticking points in the negotiations had been compensation, retirement benefits, the length of teachers’ work days and the details of planned teacher evaluations.

Collins said going forward he hopes the district can show appreciation for teachers even if it is not directly written into a contract.

“The board and the district office are going to have to do some things to show us that they value us because I think that contract or no contract they have to make some moves on things that are non-monetary to show us that we are valued.”

Yorkville schools OK tentative tax levy

By KATHY FARREN news@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville Board of Education members adopted a tentative property tax levy Monday, asking for $58,644,646 in 2015 real estate taxes payable in 2016. However, they don’t expect to receive the full amount.

Because the amount of the levy is more than five percent greater than the amount received in taxes last year, the district will have to hold a public hearing before the final adoption of the levy.

That hearing will be held at the Dec. 14 board meeting.

Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Dean Romano said that the district can’t receive more than 0.8 percent (the level of the Consumer Price Index) more than last year on all funds subject to the Property Tax Extension Limitation Law (PTELL), commonly called the tax cap.

The Bond and Interest Fund, used to repay bonds sold to finance district construction projects, is not subject to the tax cap.

The levy must be adopted by the end of December, months before the district knows the actual equalized assessed value (EAV) of all property in the district.

Since taxing districts cannot get more in taxes than they request in the levy, Romano explained that the total levy allows for a difference in the EAV of up

to three percent.

The district expects to receive about $778,650 in new revenue allowable under the tax cap. When the Bond and Interest Fund is added, Romano said he expects the district will get $56,162,592 in taxes, an increase of less than two percent over last year.

Because there is no maximum rate in the Transportation Fund, as there is in the Education Fund, Operations and Maintenance Fund, Working Cash Fund and Special Education Fund, the district will ask for more taxes in the Transportation Fund and transfer money to the other funds.

This year, the district’s tax rate was $7.70 for every $100 of equalized assessed valuation. Under that rate, the owner of a home valued at $180,000 that did not claim any available exemptions paid $4,620 in property taxes to the district.

Clean audit

Scott Klein of the district’s auditing firm, Klein Hall CPAs LLC, presented the results of the district’s annual financial audit. He said it was a clean audit which found no material weaknesses in the district’s finances.

Personnel changes

adding an additional half-time custodial/-maintenance position, increasing a math interventionist at Yorkville Middle School from half-time to full-time, increasing a half-time reading specialist at Autumn Creek Elementary School to a full-time reading interventionist, and adding two math interventionists, one a full-time position split between Yorkville Intermediate School and Autumn Creek Elementary School, and the other a part-time position at Bristol Bay Elementary School.

The board hired Jill M. Snell for the YMS math interventionist position, Matt Smith for the part-time custodian position, and Christine Yunger as a parttime lunchroom supervisor at Yorkville High School.

They also appointed Reggie Kennedy as YMS assistant track coach, Jessica Slovak as YMS assistant track coach, Katie Jurak as YMS newspaper sponsor, Jacob Austin as Autumn Creek Elementary School intramural fifth-grade girls basketball coach, Kelly Bachewicz as Bristol Bay Elementary School intramural sixth-grade girls basketball coach, and Jonathan Bridge as BBES intramural fifth-grade girls basketball coach.

The board accepted the resignation of Bristol Grade School custodian Dawn Stockwell and terminated Armelinda Aguirre and Edin Lopez.

Projector purchase

Board members approved the purchase of 220 Epson PowerLite Projectors for $98,896.60 from CDW-G using Providence Capital Network LLC as the leasing agent for a 48-month lease.

District Technology Director Ryan Adkins recommended the purchase to update classroom projectors so all teachers and students can connect wirelessly.

The projectors at Yorkville High School and Yorkville High School Academy have already been updated to wireless models and this will put all other classrooms at the same level.

The purchase is part of the district’s four-year technology plan.

ACT cost covered

The district will cover the cost of the ACT test for all YHS juniors next spring. The board approved a recommendation from Director of Teaching and Learning Kelley Gallt and the high school administrators to pay for the test even if the state doesn’t this year.

Gallt said if the state provides the test for all students, possibly on Tuesday, April 19, there would still be a cost to the district but they would not have to pay for additional transportation to the school or other test site.

If the state does not provide the test for use on a weekday, the district will pay for students to take the test on Saturday, April 9, or Saturday, June 11, and will also

pay for transportation to the test sites.

The highest cost to the district would be $26,255 to cover the cost of the ACT and its writing component for all students as well as transportation.

She also said the YHS staff is planning an ACT preparation course and the results will be shared with teachers so they can use them in their instruction.

New courses approved

Four new Yorkville High School courses were approved, three to start next fall and another in the fall of 2017.

Next year the school will add the third Project Lead The Way engineering class called computer integrated manufacturing, as well as theater arts and Advanced Placement environmental science.

An Advanced Placement physics class will be added in the fall of 2017. Both AP classes and the engineering class will have weighted grades.

Board member Dr. Robert Brenart asked if the physics class would be calculus-based. High School Principal David Travis said that only a very small group of students were now prepared to take that level of physics. However, as students advance through the new math and science curriculum, he said he expects more students will be able to take the more rigorous course.

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com The Kendall County Board approved a 2016 fiscal year budget in a 7-3 split vote Tuesday night that included a request to the Kendall County Health for a $350,000 contribution to offset the costs of benefits for health department employees.

That budget also shows a deficit of about $1.4 million in the general fund.

Board members Jeff Wehrli, Judy Gilmour and Elizabeth Flowers cast the negative votes.

The County Board briefly discussed the merits of requesting the money from the Health Department.

Wehrli and Flowers said they had problems with making the request in light of the uncertainty with the state budget. Wehrli also said he didn’t know the “mechanism” the county would use if the health department decided not to comply with the request.

Last week the Board of Health voted to contribute $125,000 to the county’s general fund. The counter-offer came after the County Board approved putting their budget on display with the $350,000 request to the health department.

Two file petitions to run for county coroner SHAW MEDIA Two Kendall County residents filed petitions this week to have their names placed on the March 15, 2016, Republican Party primary election ballot as candidates for Kendall County coroner.

Filing petitions were current deputy coroner Jacquie Purcell of 458 Landmark Ave., Yorkville, and Chad Gutierrez of 62 Riverview Court, Oswego.

The two candidates are seeking to succeed long-time incumbent coroner Ken Toftoy, who announced earlier this year he would step down from the position when his current term ends next year.

The one-week period for candidates to file petitions to have their names placed on the March ballot began on Monday at the county clerk’s office in Yorkville and concludes Monday, Nov. 30.

Also filing petitions Monday was incumbent Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis of 455 E. Barberry Circle, Yorkville, also a Republican.

As of press time Weis was the only candidate to file a petition to run for state’s attorney.

The Republicans filing petitions to have their names placed on the ballot as candidates for county board seats from the board’s District 1 were Todd Milliron of 61 Cotswold

Drive, Yorkville, and John Purcell of 458 Landmark Ave., Yorkville.

The Republicans filing petitions to run as candidates for the board’s District 2 were Dan Koukol of 1690 Collins Road, Oswego, and Diane Selmer, 568 Heritage Drive, Oswego.

Purcell and Koukol are incumbents.

No Democratic Party candidates had filed petitions as of press time.

County not immune to city crime Kendall County Sheriff Dwight Baird made some interesting comments concerning crime trends and gangs in the county during a recent meeting of the Neighborhood Watch program in the unincorporated Boulder Hill subdivision.

As we reported last week, Baird told an audience of more than 25 subdivision residents that crimes in the county are caused by both county residents and those outside the county. He noted that this has always been the case.

Concerning gang activity, Baird reminded the audience that it is nothing new to the county. He recalled there was a gang presence in Boulder Hill when he grew up there in the 1980s. However, what is relatively new concerning gang crime in the county is its location. According to Baird, there is now more gang activity in residential developments between Yorkville and Plano than in Boulder Hill or other areas of the county.

When questioned further, Baird noted that many of the people involved with gangs came to the county due to changes in subsidized housing rules in Chicago.

Baird’s comments should serve as an unsettling reminder to all Kendall County residents that we are in no way isolated or immune from the effect of the carnage now taking place on the streets in some Chicago neighborhoods. What happens in the city or other communities in the suburbs has a ripple effect throughout the region. As a result, the need to find solutions to the problems that lead to the violence in the city should be a matter of concern to us all – not just those in the city.

An opportunity to help those in need this year Kendall County has grown and changed significantly over the past many years, but it’s nice to see that so many county civic and religious organizations continue to offer programs during the Christmas holiday season to help out the many amongst us enduring difficult times.

Just one example: the Oswego Fire Protection District, School District 308 and the Oswego Optimist Club are teaming up again this year to collect new toys and bicycles as part of the Toys for Tots program. Those wishing to donate toys to the program are invited to drop off new, unwrapped toys and bicycles at any of the fire district’s four station or at District 308 junior high schools. Optimist Club members will later help distribute the toys and bikes to needy county families before Christmas.

There are many other food, clothing and toy drives now underway throughout the county. This week on page one of our Countywide section we’ve published a listing of several of these programs and encourage our readers to consider supporting at least one of them with a donation. Giving thanks … for shopping season?

We all know the very first Thanksgiving dinner in the New World was cooked up by the Pilgrims following their first successful harvest in 1621. But then again, we probably think we’re actually voting for president when we go to the polls every four years. Neither, of course, is true.

In the case of the presidential election, we vote for electors, who, in turn, cast their ballots in the Electoral College. And as we saw in the 2000 election, the candidate getting the most popular votes isn’t necessarily elected president.

Likewise, the Pilgrims did indeed celebrate a Thanksgiving in 1621, but it wasn’t the first in what would one day become the United States. Actually, 30 vastly relieved Englishmen who had sailed to the new colony of Virginia in 1619 aboard the rickety ship Margaret thanked their lucky stars – and God – during a heartfelt Thanksgiving service on Nov. 30 of that year. They then upped anchor and sailed up the James River into history.

A year later, in the autumn of 1620, the Pilgrims – a grim group of Puritans who fled what they believed to be a thoroughly Godless society – sailed west across the Atlantic hoping to find the same Virginia colony the passengers of the Margaret reached the year before. But the Mayflower and its 102 passengers landed much farther north due to a combination of stormy weather and bad navigation.

So, instead of finding Virginia’s sunny clime, the Pilgrims and their Mayflower compatriots struck land at Cape Cod, anchoring off what today is Provincetown, Mass. After exploring the vicinity for several weeks, the party decided to settle around what eventually became Plymouth Plantation, the first colony in New England.

That first winter proved fatal for many of the Pilgrims, who had no real experience with winter weather in the northern New World. And the ones who survived made it through thanks mostly to the generosity of the local Native Americans.

The survivors planted crops the next spring, again with the assistance of local members of the Wampanoag Tribe under their leader, Massasoit. In particular, the Indians taught the English how to plant corn by including a codfish in each hill of corn that acted as fertilizer. Corn, beans,

After the successful harvest of 1621, Massachusetts Gov. William Bradford decreed that a day of thanksgiving be set aside to thank God for the Puritans’ survival. Bradford and the Pilgrims invited their Wampanoag benefactors, including Massasoit and 92 of his people, to the feast.

The meal included wild turkeys shot by the Pilgrims and food the English had raised, including popcorn. It must have been an interesting meal for both sides.

The Pilgrims remained friendly with the Wampanoag while Massasoit and his eldest son, Wamsutta, lived. But following Wamsutta’s death, Massasoit’s other son, Philip, assumed leadership of the Wampanoag. Growing friction with the Pilgrims eventually led to war. Called King Philip’s War after the Wampanoag leader, the Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive those first terrible years were virtually annihilated in a pattern followed for two and a half centuries until the Native American tribes that inhabited North America were either subdued or exterminated.

The Pilgrims continued to celebrate Thanksgiving even after they had eradicated the Indians who had helped them survive during those first terrible years.

Through the years, that first Thanksgiving was both remembered and embellished, even though some of the reasons the Pilgrims were around to celebrate it at all were conveniently forgotten.

In fact, it remained a mostly New England holiday for the next 200 years, although transplanted Yankees took the celebration with them as they headed west, settling other areas of the growing country.

Then in 1863 during the depths of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day to be held on the last Thursday in November. The president acted, at least in part, in response to Sarah Josepha

Hale, the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular magazine of the era.

Hale had begun campaigning for a national Thanksgiving Day in 1846, and by 1852 she had persuaded people to celebrate a Thanksgiving Day on the same date in 30 of the nation’s 32 states. But it was far from an official celebration.

With President Lincoln’s declaration, the celebration became national – at least in the states still loyal to the Union. Following the war, most states passed laws making the last Thursday in November the official Thanksgiving Day. Then, since this is the United States, the commercialization of the holiday surfaced and began to accelerate.

The nation was just starting to crawl out of the Great Depression triggered by the stock market crash of October 1929 when President Franklin Roosevelt’s 1937 tax increase, approved in a misguided effort to balance the national budget in a time of depression, threw the nation back into recession. But by 1939, its effects were beginning to wear off. That year, Federated Department Stores’ chief, Fred Lazarus Jr., persuaded Roosevelt that a longer Christmas shopping season would greatly help the nation’s flagging economy – not to mention Federated Department Stores’ bottom line.

Roosevelt then proclaimed Thanksgiving would henceforth be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November instead of the last, thus in many years adding another week to the Christmas shopping season. Within a few years most states fell into line, passing laws making November’s fourth Thursday Thanksgiving Day. From that year on, Thanksgiving has become more and more a commercial holiday marking the start of the Christmas shopping season rather than a true day of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and survival in a harsh world.

In more ways than one, the celebration of Thanksgiving Day has symbolized the change of the nation’s economy from a rural-based farm economy to one based on consumerism. Depending on your point of view, that may be either bad or good, but I think we all have to admit the meaning behind the holiday has certainly changed during the past 152 years.

FORUM Focus on local law enforcement

To the Editor: I think it’s time to shift attention away from a broad, national conversation on law enforcement and focus on our police here in Kendall County.

Perhaps you, like me, didn’t feel any particular need to outwardly support our own police until a national, media-driven conversation seemed to force people to criticize or defend all police.

I always had a favorable impression of our law enforcement but never took the time to appreciate just how fortunate we are in Kendall County.

My respect for these men and women grows every time I encounter someone from court security, patrol, or even Sheriff Baird himself.

Based on the professionalism and civility they have always shown me, I feel fortunate to know the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the safety of my community.

Not only do I have my own first-hand positive snapshots of these exceptional men and women, I also see how they treat people who are not as enthusiastic about police as I am.

Let’s just say these are the people you would hope to encounter if you ever found yourself on the other side of the law.

Every time I think we could not be more fortunate, I get a different look at the exceptional public servants from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office. I want to share with people of Kendall County my latest positive experience and thank Sheriff Baird and Deputy Pavlik for allowing me to see how law enforcement serves and protects us every day.

Last week, I had the privilege of doing a civilian ride-along.

The experience was something I will never forget, but not just for the excitement of flashing lights and sirens. After spending several hours on patrol, I had a new appreciation for what law enforcement officers do every day and how they do it Kendall County.

It was clear from the beginning that Deputy Pavlik takes pride in professionalism and attention to detail. Perhaps the most impressive thing, aside from being a great deputy, was the constant courtesy shown to everyone he encountered during those hours. He was willing to tell me what he was doing and why, even answering my questions.

Whether speaking with dispatch, officers from other law enforcement agencies, or civilians, this deputy was focused on accuracy, detail and efficiency. He handled the most important technical aspects and also managed to treat everyone in a way (I imagine) we would all want to be treated in a given context. It was clear that Deputy Pavlik cares about the safety and well-being of the community and what it means to be a public servant, an exceptional one.

Deputy Pavlik and all the other public servants I have or have not had the pleasure of meeting, thank you for serving and protecting Kendall County with professionalism, courage, and integrity. Sheriff Baird, thank you for doing the same and leading by example.

I like a good fight

To the Editor: Profit is very simply revenue above expenses.

Carla Taylor’s Nov. 19 letter reflects her belief that Planned Parenthood is not profit generating. She calls Planned Parenthood a charitable organization, defined in the dictionary as one set up to provide help and raise money. This describes many for-profit and nonprofits alike.

The difference is what they do with that money that exceeds expenses. A nonprofit must plow the money back into their work rather than provide it for shareholders. Though Planned Parenthood has been designated as a nonprofit by the IRS, it is not necessarily a charity. The word does, though, nicely deflect the truth about their monetary situation.

From 2005 to 2009, Planned Parenthood, in their own documents, made about $319 million.

It likely is more now, but that’s not the point.

They state that $78 million should be deducted for “investment losses” but the resulting net is still a paltry $240 million. Of course, they choose not to use the word “profit” but prefer to use the “revenue over expenses” terminology.

It sounds nicer. The real question is how they can even begin to defend that we taxpayers apparently should continue to choose to give so much money in our governmental budget to their wonderful charity.

As far as government shutdowns blamed on that awful “radical right wing” contingent, it seems an oversimplification the media would love us to embrace. Possibly many do. But when you resort to calling names, I’m sure it makes you feel better. It’s sad.

Yes, abortion is legal. It has long been known that just because someone has a right to do something does not make it right. On the GOP website, they state this: a “culture should respect and protect life.” Unfortunately for us, we have some confused Republican representatives and senators that subscribe to the Democrats’ ideals of family, life and marriage. I wish they would just become Democrats, but we can vote them out when they can’t defend the GOP platform. It’s simple: just look for the conservative candidate.

It’s also a laugh to know Carla’s definition for my life as a conservative is that my life is “good” and that the status quo works best for me. Poppycock. If I wanted to leave things the way they are right now, I would shut up and call myself a Democrat. It is my perception that, when listening to the liberal ideas spewed by our media, they are the ones who do not want to listen to the ideas of others. As my grampa would say, they reside in the land where the motto is “It’s my way or the highway.”

Whether you call it pro-abortion or the sugary term “pro-choice,” I would say we should choose. Choose life. Someone asked, “Why fight a battle you can’t win?” to which we must respond, “These are exactly the battles we should fight; if you knew you could win, it wouldn’t be a fight,” and I like a good fight.

I have spent the past couple of months gathering signatures at various events, booths and by simply walking door-to-door. Do we not live with terrorists every day? Terrorists are not defined by religion or nationality alone. The greatest terrorist act in the U.S. prior to 9/11 was perpetrated by a white, Christian, decorated veteran, registered Republican, NRA member and fervent defender of the Second Amendment. That would be Timothy McVeigh.

Now that would be an interesting demographic for the FBI to target. 168 people died in Oklahoma because someone was upset how our government operated.

We walk among terrorists all the time. White Supremacists, KKK, Mexican and Columbian Cartels, gangs from inner cities that have migrated to small towns. Motorcycle gangs that drive into Waco, Texas and start shooting. We have religious people shooting abortion doctors and kids grabbing weapons and killing kids in schools. And we worry about a refugee might be a terrorist?

Do we think we will be safer by blocking our borders? If we stop people from floating in on boats from Cuba, then we could have eliminated two Republican candidates. These people we want to reject may have among them someone who may become violent or they may be someone who will bring greatness to our shores.

Einstein was a refugee. Steve Jobs was raised by Syrian refugees. Yes, let’s be shortsighted and block our borders. Think of the money we could get if we scrap the Statue of Liberty. Make a dent in our national debt.

To the Editor: I’m writing to rave about the most spectacular Christmas decorations at Schaefer’s Greenhouse. So many beautifully decorated trees made it a one of a kind experience. I didn’t want to leave because I was so spellbound at such talent. It made me want to throw my decorations away and start over. Give teachers a fair contract

To the Editor: I have three students in Yorkville School District 115 and my children have had teachers from five schools within the district. For the last four years, I have also substituted as a teacher in the district. The teachers work hard, the teachers care about the students, and the teachers deserve a fair contract.

We have an abundance of hard working teachers. As a substitute, I see firsthand the time teachers commit to teaching our children.

With the exception of the last couple of months where teachers are abiding by the old contract, teachers stay late and come in early to work.

Our teachers work tireless hours outside of school preparing lesson plans, researching new topics, and grading papers and tests. Substitute teachers receive very detailed plans from our wonderful teachers, which take lots of time to put together.

Our teachers care about the students.

Even though they are tasked with numerous assessments and evaluations that they have to administer to our kids, they still find time to teach our kids. The day of giving students a pair of scissors, some glue and crayons are long gone. Although they still use these tools rarely, most of their time is spent helping students by working with the ones that are struggling one on one. Disciplinary, struggling, or exemplary our teachers work with all of the students to help them succeed. Class sizes have increased in some of the schools, yet our teachers work hard with the students. Teachers donate items to our students all of the time without compensation: clothes, food, books, etc.

A fair contract is deserved by all of our teachers. With the exception of our non-tenured teachers (those teaching four years or less), our teachers are woefully behind surrounding school districts in pay. Every year I come to teach there are new teachers in the schools, while some are internal transfers, most are new teachers.

About a third of our teachers in the district are non-tenured. The average cost of our teacher’s insurance is less than half per family than our administrator’s insurance.

To the CUSD 115 school board, please do not force our teachers to strike. Give them the fair compensation they deserve and do it now before it is too late.

Home repair fraud Yorkville police are investigating a possible home repair fraud that occurred in the 200 block of West Elizabeth Street. The incident was reported on Nov. 17, reports said.

Retail theft A female juvenile was charged with retail theft in connection with an incident at about 1:50 p.m. Nov. 17 in the 900 block of Erica Lane, Yorkville police said.

The juvenile was released to a parent, reports said.

Warrant arrest Lydia E. Gonzalez, 60, of the 400 block of West Kendall Drive, Yorkville, was found to be wanted on a warrant from Kendall County at about 5:55 p.m.

Nov. 19, Yorkville police said.

According to reports, Gonzalez locked her keys in her car while it was running. Police were able to unlock the car but a check of registration revealed the warrant, the report said.

Domestic incident Heather L. Bueschen, 42, of the 300 block of McHugh Road, Yorkville, was charged with assault at about 6:15 p.m. Nov. 19, Yorkville police said.

According to reports, Bueschen is accused of throwing several pieces of furniture and other household items at another person in a domestic altercation.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Ring missing A gold diamond ring with ruby stones was reported missing at about 2:55 p.m. Nov. 20 in the 200 block of Greenbriar Road, the owner told Yorkville police.

The incident is believed to have occurred Nov. 3 or 4. The ring is valued at $500, reports said.

Tablet missing A Microsoft computer tablet valued at $600 was taken from a car between Oct. 17 and 18 in the 1500 block of Orchid Street, the owner told Yorkville police on Nov. 21.

Residential burglary A bicycle valued at $579 was taken sometime before 8:50 a.m. Nov. 22 from a home in the 100 block of East Main Street, the owner told Yorkville police.

Icy road conditions Icy road conditions on Nov. 21 contributed to a number of traffic accidents, Yorkville police said. Police responded to collisions at the following locations.

In each of the incidents, injuries were determined to be minor and no tickets were issued: 1:09 p.m., Route 47 and Galena Road; jackknifed semi-trailer truck closed the state highway for about 2 hours 5:27 p.m., 1600 block of Beecher Road; two vehicles collided on a private drive 9:23 p.m., Eldamain Road about one mile south of Galena Road; vehicle skidded on ice and struck curb 9:23 p.m., Eldamain Road about one mile south of Galena Road; motorist stopped vehicle to check on another motorist whose car spun on ice; second car struck the rear bumper of the parked car.

Turner, 31, of the 0-99 block of Circle Drive East, Boulder Hill, was charged with driving while license suspended, suspended registration and having no vehicle insurance after a traffic stop at about 10:55 a.m. Nov. 17 at Long Beach and Winrock roads in Boulder Hill, Kendall County sheriff’s police said.

Possession charge Peter M. Konigsfeld, 21, of Plainfield, was charged with illegal possession of cannabis after a traffic stop at about 1:25 a.m. Nov. 17 at Cherry and Grove roads in Na-Au-Say Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said.

Hit-and-run crash Erin Summerson, 25, of Sheridan, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after a two-vehicle crash at about 8:10 a.m. Nov. 17 at Route 71 and Reservation Road in Oswego Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said.

The other driver left the scene in a silver Chevrolet Tahoe without providing any information for the accident report, deputies said.

Warrant arrest Joseph H. Villagrana, 35, of the 500 block of Ashland Avenue,

Aurora, was charged with driving while license revoked and expired registration at about 9:20 p.m. Nov. 18 at Douglas Road and Seasons Ridge Boulevard in Montgomery, Kendall County sheriff’s police said.

Villagrana also was found to be wanted on a warrant from Kane County, reports said.

License violation Robert L. Beasley Jr., 42, of the 100 block of Circle Drive West, Boulder Hill, was charged with driving while license revoked at about 11:20 p.m. Nov. 19 at Ashlawn and Circle Drive West in Boulder Hill, Kendall County sheriff’s police said.

License violation Juan Rodriguez III, 18 of the 800 block of South Fourth Street, Aurora, was charged with having no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at about 11:50 p.m. Nov. 10 in the 2000 block of Baseline Road in Oswego Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said.

Rodriguez also was cited for speeding, reports said.

Burglary An air rifle, a camera and several tools were taken between 4 p.m. Nov. 20 and noon Nov. 21 from a detached garage in the 0-99 block of Curtmar Court, Oswego Township, the owner told Kendall County sheriff’s police.

Suspicious fires Kendall County sheriff’s police are investigating two fires at abandoned residences on Nov. 21 near Whitewillow and Church roads in Lisbon Township. Both residences had utilities shut off and both fires appear to have been intentionally set, reports said.

Three-car crash Cassie McDonald, 30, of the 2000 block of Rosemont Avenue, Aurora, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident at about 4:05 p.m. Nov. 21 at Galena and Rock Creek roads in Little Rock Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. Inclement weather conditions contributed to the collision, reports said. One woman was taken to Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora for treatment, report said.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD This year’s Yorkville Junior Women’s Club’s Holiday Walk has been transformed to a Christmas Tree Walk. The Christmas Tree Walk will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Whitetail Ridge Golf Club, 7671 Clubhouse Dr., Yorkville.

Walk through uniquely decorated trees on display (each created by local businesses and families), enjoy the fabulous luncheon, do some holiday shopping at the Christmas Bazaar and check out many amazing gift baskets that will be raffled off.

BRIEFS Operation Santa collecting for Kendall County kids

Operation Santa is a program run by the Yorkville Junior Women’s Club that collects gifts for children in need in the Kendall County area. This program has run in conjunction with the Kendall County Food Pantry for over 20 years. Last year, gifts were provided to almost 1,400 children.

Gifts are needed for children ages newborn to 13 years old. It is requested that gifts have a minimum value of $10. The club also accepts gift cards, batteries and wrapping paper.

Items should be turned in by Thursday, Dec. 11. There are several area businesses serving as collection sites. In Yorkville, Club 47 and Advanced Physical Medicine.

In Oswego, any Oswegoland Park District location and Keith’s Car Care. In Plano, Possibilities Hair Salon.

Boy Scout Christmas Tree sale starts Friday at fire station

Bristol Boy Scout Troop 34 will sell Christmas trees in front of the Bristol-Kendall Fire Department Station No. 1 on Ill. Route 47 at Beaver Street in Yorkville. Sale hours will begin on Friday, Nov. 27, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and continue Saturday, Nov. 28, and Sunday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Starting Monday, Nov. 30, the tree lot will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. weeknights and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends.

Scouts will be selling five types of fresh trees, wreaths, cuttings, and handmade ornaments. Fraser firs from 3’ to 4’ tall will sell for $20 each; 6’ to 7’ Scotch pines will sell for $40 each; 7’ to 10’ balsam and Frasier firs will sell for $50 to $80 each; and 8’ to 10’ white pines will sell for $60 to $70 each. Also available are 24” wreaths for $15, bundles of cuttings for $5, and scout-made ornaments for $1.

A really chilly Chili Chase KENDALL COUNTY RECORD This past weekend’s cold and snow served to put the chilly into Sunday’s Chili Chase 5K held from the Yorkville American Legion in Yorkville. Temperatures were just over 12 degrees as 181 runners ran the 3.1-mile course through the city’s Heartland subdivision. The race was organized by the city’s Park and Recreation Department. Proceeds will benefit the family of Ben Divin, a 9-year-old fourth-grad-

er at Yorkville Intermediate School who was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy five years ago.

Finishing first was Zack Price of Yorkville with a time of 18:20, followed by Patrick Black, also of Yorkville, in 18:25. First place female finisher was Allysia Muth of Yorkville with a time of 20:09.

Second place in the women’s division was Lauren Foster of Elburn in 21.04. Following the race, runners were treated to bowls of chili served up inside the Legion Hall.

State Police warn public of new drug SHAW MEDIA Illinois State Police have announced the appearance of a new drug in the area.

In August, three people were arrested during traffic stops in the Grundy County area while they were attempting to deliver “shatter,” District 5 Safety Education Officer DeAnn Falat said in a statement, and 105 pounds of shatter was seized during the stops.

Shatter is extracted from cannabis plant resin and can be six times stronger than the average joint, Falat said in the statement.

This high concentration is extremely poisonous and destroys nerve tissue.

When the resin dries it looks like a brown or amber sheet of glass, Falat said.

According to police, shatter is most commonly used by heating and inhaling the smoke, but has also been eaten or injected.

“Shatter causes a mental disorder characterized by disconnection from reality,” Falat said.

The process to make shatter uses gases and chemicals that have caused explosions in illegal laboratories, according to police.

The Yorkville Public Library is 100 years old.

Join the staff and Friends of the Yorkville Public Library as they culminate their yearlong celebration with a large 100th birthday party bash from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4 with refreshments, balloons, face painting, crafts, photo ops and a grand prize drawing of electronic tablets.

The library kicked off its yearlong celebration in January with a continental breakfast and history program and presentation. Throughout the year the library has had

special events and activities, all leading up to the 100th birthday party.

In looking to the future and another 100 years of service, the library is always aiming to grow their patron base and increase community involvement in the library. It strives to keep up with the community’s expectations and stay relevant in ever changing technology and different platforms of media delivery.

The firehouse, some businesses, the library and Newark Lutheran Church will welcome visitors.

There will be snacks available, and Newark Lutheran Church will feature a quilt show and a bake sale.

The Yorkville Phoenix Soccer Club 13U team recently closed out their fall season with two victories. The Firebirds defeated the Chicago Magic on their home turf followed by a home victory at the Yorkville PNA Camp over FC Chicago as daylight slipped away. The Firebirds, who were promoted to the Gold Division this season, tied for first place in the division with a regular season record of 7-2-1. In addition to participating in Chicagoland tournaments, the Firebirds also traveled to the Scott Gallagher Tournament in St. Louis in October. The Firebirds are coached by Danny del Toro.

Yorkville resident Mason Bumba traveled to Benidorm, Spain, from Nov. 3-8 to represent the United States World Kickboxing Association in the Unified World Championships. Bumba, age 10, competed in Martial Arts creative forms, traditional weapons, extreme weapons, and kickboxing (point fighting). He entered seven divisions and qualified in each division to advance to the medal rounds on the final day. He won gold medals in all seven divisions for his country. Team USA brought 16 competitors to Spain to compete with over 70 countries and bought home 64 gold medals, 22 silver, and 11 bronze.

Newark boys basketball opens season in Sycamore with OT loss KENDALL COUNTY RECORD The Norsemen opened the season at Sycamore’s Leland G. Strombom Tournament against Jefferson and fell 68-66 in overtime. The game was tied at 59 after regulation.

Newark was led by four players in double-digits: Jack Clausel (20 points, 14 rebounds), Will Clausel (15 points) and Evan Schomer and Cam Myre (14 points each).

Parkview Christian: Kankakee Trinity Academy defeated the Falcons, 64-61, on Nov. 17. They

were led by Austin West and Zach Anderson, who scored 20 points each. Last Saturday, Parkview Christian finished in third place in the Families of Faith Tournament in Channahon. The Falcons lost the first game, 48-44, to the host team. Russell Lanehart led the way with 18 points and Anderson and West each added 11.

It its inaugural season, Yorkville went 6-4 overall at duals and placed fourth at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference meet. Junior Hannah Jaros and Washburn were named to the All-Conference team while Washburn qualified out of the regional and to the sectional as an individual.

Washburn and Jaros are expected to lead the pack of young players on the Foxes.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office.

Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2016 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

For two years, Cailin attended Rosary High School where she was in the National Foreign Language Honor Society and in the Model United Nations Club. In addition to tutoring in Spanish, she was on the Math Team and a member of Mu Alpha Theta. She also played softball at Rosary.

She is co-captain of her travel softball team and worked on Hometown Days and the Fall Festival through the Yorkville Park Board.

Yorkville wrestling offers deep, talented lineup

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Despite graduating four of its six state qualifiers, the Yorkville wrestling team will forge ahead with a new lineup packed full of both young talent and veteran leadership.

“We’re going to have to wrestle off and fill in with whoever can earn that spot,” Yorkville head coach Joe Fornell said. “We have a very good balance of seniority and we’ll get a lot of young guys in the lineup, which is good for their future. They may take their

licks as freshmen, but that’s only going to make them better. As a freshman, Will Ferguson only had five wins and last year as a junior he was a state placer.”

Ferguson is among the top returners for the Foxes after placing sixth in the Class 3A state finals at 220. Senior state qualifier Bryce Shewan (160) is also back in the mix in addition to senior and returning sectional qualifier Joey Nauman (170). Sophomore returner Johnathon Salgado will move from 106 to 120 and will anchor the lightweights.

“The schedule isn’t changing a whole lot, and we still wrestle a tough schedule,” Fornell said.

Foxes girls basketball wins 2 straight

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com After losing the season-opener to Indian Creek at IMSA’s Hoop Happenings Tournament, the Yorkville girls’ basketball team reeled off back-to-back wins against Rosary and IMSA. The Foxes defeated Rosary, 51-31, last Thursday, only to turn around the next day and top IMSA, 60-10. “[Since Indian Creek], I think our defense has improved and causing more havoc with the pressure,” Yorkville head coach Luke Engelhardt said. “They are going to keep learning every game and will get better.”

“I think we are jelling better, our communication is better and we are starting to do the small things, like boxing out and passing well,” Yorkville junior Natalie Malinowski added.

third-place game of the tournament on Saturday at Aurora Christian, but inclement weather postponed the game to Nov. 25. The firstplace game, however, still resumed, and Indian Creek (4-0) won the tournament title after the 49-34 victory over Aurora Christian.

“Ottawa is always a fun rivalry game,” Engelhardt said. “We’ve had some good games against them in the past few years, so I’m expecting another fun one.”

Against IMSA, the Foxes scored the first eight points of the game and led 18-2 after one quarter, limiting the Titans to just two free throws.

Yorkville scored the first nine points of the second quarter behind points from

Audrey Macciomei, Lauren Daffenberg, Erica Cyko and Malinowski for the 27-2 advantage. IMSA posted its first field goal of the game with 1:36 left in the first half.

At the break, the Foxes led 30-4.

The Foxes ended up outscoring the titans 13-3 in the third quarter, and when senior guard Aynia McGowan scored early in the fourth, not only did that push them ahead 47-7, but she was the 11th and final dressed player to post points for Yorkville.

No one finished in double digits, but the Foxes were led by Malinowski (nine points, five rebounds) and Erica Cyko and Audrey Macciomei (eight points each).

“We have a really deep bench, and everyone plays,” Yorkville senior Bekah Hahn said. “It’s good to see everyone get minutes and work together.”

Against Rosary, Yorkville was led by Daffenberg (12 points), Macciomei (11 points) and Lindsay Harrison (10 points). The Foxes led 22-6 after the first quarter and 39-10 at the half.

“We had a nice spurt in the second quarter and got a nice glimpse of what we can do if we push the ball well and make shots out of the transition break,” Engelhardt said.

After the IMSA tournament, Yorkville returns to action on Dec. 4 at LaSallePeru.

Yorkville student athletes play on 362 would be affected if teachers strike

and CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com The winter sports season is now in full swing at Yorkville High School, but student athletes may have an extended halftime if teachers carry through with their intent to strike next week.

With a strike deadline of Dec. 2 quickly approaching, the Yorkville School District and the teacher’s union announced a tentative agreement on Tuesday night. The teachers have been working without a contract since June 30, and contract negotia-

tions between the district and the Yorkville Education Association have been ongoing.

The YEA membership is expected to review the agreement next week and then consider a ratification vote.

Leading up to Tuesday night’s announcement, Yorkville athletic director Seth Schoonover was keeping things business as usual in the athletic department. In the event of a strike, all athletic events and practices would be canceled until school resumes.

“I’m optimistic they’ll get it done. I really am,” Schoonover said.

There are currently 362 student

athletes participating in winter athletics at Yorkville.

The IHSA handbook includes a section outlining its strike policy, noting that if a member school does not have 51 percent of the students in the district in attendance on a daily basis, it shall not engage in interscholastic activities. Practice may be held if it is approved by the local Board of Education and school administration and cannot practice with a team from a school that is not in strike.

In the event of a strike, Schoonover said that any events scheduled would be either rescheduled or forfeited, and that decision will be made on a case-by-case situa-

tion.

“There would be no sports during that time,” Schoonover said.

Yorkville coaches were not ready to make preparations for potential cancellations.

“I don’t think you can really prepare for anything like this.

This is something none of us have ever had to deal with,” said Luke Engelhardt, the head girls basketball coach and assistant athletic director. “It is in the back of our heads and in our minds, and I know everyone is hoping and praying it gets resolved, but I have faith in both sides that they will come to the right agreement.”

“We really haven’t talked too much about it,” added Yorkville head boys basketball coach and social studies teacher Mike Dunn.

On the first day of Ottawa’s Dean Riley Shootin’ the Rock Thanksgiving Tournament, Metamora defeated the Foxes, 63-47. Yorkville will resume play with two games on Friday against Streator and Marengo.

“I thought we did some good things,” Dunn said. “I thought our first half was outstanding, [but] in the second half, they put a lot more pressure on us. We turned the ball over and defensively, we were not where we needed to be. Give [Metamora] credit.

That’s a good basketball team.

They haven’t lost in four years [at this tournament], but I give our kids credit. I’m proud of the kids.”

“We played hard, but we

played a really good team,” Yorkville senior Cameron Van Boekel added. “They just beat us up and down the court.”

Metamora led the entire opening quarter, but when Yorkville junior Austin Avery banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer, it started an 11-0 run that continued into the second quarter. A three-pointer from Van Boekel, a layup

Metamora was held to just four points in the second quarter – a field goal and two free throws – as Yorkville led 23-20 at halftime. “[Junior] Austin Avery took a big charge [in the second quarter], and we got some momentum off of that,” Van Boekel said. “We were making our shots and playing good defense.”

Yorkville never led in the second half, but the closest the Foxes came was by two points twice after buckets from Dan Kaczmarek and Van Boekel in the middle of the quarter. Metamora then went on a 14-0 run that lasted into the opening minute of the final frame. After back-to-back three-pointers from Dehm, the Redbirds led 47-30 with 6:54 left to play.

A three-pointer from Kaczmarek stopped the run, as he finished with eight of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter. Davis was next with six points. “[Metamora] did a nice job getting us out of what we wanted to do in the second half,” Dunn said. “We turned the ball over too much and gave up some easy baskets and some open looks.”

The Newark girls’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season against Plano in the third game of Somonauk’s Tim Humes Breakout Tournament last Thursday. The Reapers shot out to a fast start and led by double-digits early, en route to their 44-41 victory over the Norsemen.

Newark finished 2-2 at the tournament after Wheaton Academy topped the Norsemen, 54-26, on Friday. The Warriors won the tournament, 4-0. It was the second game without 6-foot-3 junior center Jasmine Mitchell, who is on a two-week mission trip in Nepal.

“I have the five starters who are all upperclassmen, but after that, everyone is young,” Newark head coach Barb Scott said.

“I’m using this week as a learning curve. It’s only going to make us stronger down the stretch. I’m proud of the effort.”

Plano scored the first 11 points against Newark behind points from Bradi Gann (10 points, four rebounds), Khiyanna Magee and Shannon Tierney. The Reapers capped the first quarter with a 13-7 advantage.

The Reapers were able to keep the lead for the rest of the first half and owned the 23-17 advantage at the break. The Norsemen, however, started the second half on a 7-0 run behind Kelsea Zitt’s five points and took the lead (24-

23) for the first time.

The only tie of the contest was on the next point, when Plano’s Ashontik Jones (eight points, seven rebounds) hit a free throw. She then went on to score the next five points to push the Reapers ahead, 29-24, with 3:20 left in the third quarter. Entering the final frame, they led 37-32.

In the middle of the fourth, Newark went on a 7-0 run, and when Megan DiClementi (eight points, five rebounds) scored a bucket with 2:25 left in the game, the Norsemen led 41-39.

That was the last time Newark scored, as Tierney responded with a huge three-pointer that gave Plano the 42-41 lead. Four timeouts later, Magee connected on a pair of free throws for the final points of the contest.

“They could have folded and it could have been over, but they fought back,” Scott said. “I’m proud of the fact they kept fighting.”

Prior to Plano, Newark defeated Aurora Central Catholic, 42-38, on Nov. 17. Morgan Myre hit two clutch free throws at the end. DiClementi led the Norsemen with 14 points and Mitchell finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

“I was really proud of [Myre] and for her to able to step up in that position and put those free throws in,” Scott said. “They kept their composure and battled back.

It was a huge win for such a young team.”

he Christmas holiday season of giving has arrived and there are a wide variety of ways Kendall County residents can help their neighbors in need. Here is a listing of just a few of the many charitable drives and programs now underway: • Operation Santa is a program run by the Yorkville Junior Women’s Club that collects gifts for children in need in the Kendall County area. This program has run in conjunction with the Kendall County Food Pantry for over 20 years. Last year, gifts were provided to almost 1,400 children.

Gifts are needed for children ages newborn to 13 years old.

It is requested that gifts have a minimum value of $10. The club also accept gift cards, batteries and wrapping paper.

Items should be turned in by Thursday, Dec. 11. There are several area businesses serving as collection sites. In Yorkville, Club 47 and Advanced Physical Medicine. In Oswego, any Oswegoland Park District location and Keith’s Car Care. In Plano, Possibilities Hair Salon.

• The School District 308 Transportation Department and the Oswego Transportation Association are collecting winter ac-

cessories including hats, scarves,

gloves, ear muffs, mittens and any other winter weather gear from Nov. 30 to Dec. 15. The donations will be given to the Brokaw Early Learning Center in Oswego.

Donations may be given to any school district bus driver bus, or dropped off at the district’s Transportation Center, located at 55 Stonehill Road in Oswego.

• The Oswego Fire Protection District is collecting toys for this year’s Toys For Tots program. Every year the fire district, School District 308 junior high schools, United Stated Marine Corps and the Oswego Optimist Club team up to collect toys for families in need during the holiday season.

The fire district, the junior highs and Marine Corps collect the toys and the Oswego Optimist Club distributes the toys just before Christmas.

Anyone wishing to participate and help out local families in need may drop off a new, unwrapped toy at any of the fire district stations in Oswego, Montgomery and Plainfield.

More importantly, the fire district would like to make everyone aware that if you are a family in need or you know a family in need, contact them at 630554-2110. You may also go to the Oswego Optimist Club website directly at oswegooptimists.com.

• The Optimist Club of Oswegoland is preparing for their “Family Christmas Project.” The club works with School District 308 to find families in need. The club sets up a sponsor for each needy family who puts together gifts and clothing for the children and groceries for the holiday.

The number of families and children increases every year and the Optimist Club works very hard to provide for all of them. The committee that oversees this project begins months in advance to assure that as much as possible is done for as many as possible. There are fundraisers in place throughout the year that raise funds and canned goods.

For many years, businesses and individuals in the community have participated in this project. Whether it is by purchasing gifts for the children and families, donating cash (which

the club uses to purchase the food), donating hats and mittens at the local schools, or helping distribute the items to the families, there is always a way for someone to take part and give back within the community. In addition, the club has been working with the “Toys For Tots” program in conjunction with the Oswego Fire Protection. • The Oswego Fire Protection District will hold its annual meat and cash raffle on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m. at Prohibition Junction Sports Bar & Grill. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the fire district’s Christmas Gift program. The public is welcome to attend.

• The 2015 Franklin Mall Christmas Project is now underway in Sandwich. This annual holiday food drive, directed by the Sandwich Lions Club, has been a community tradition for over 60 years. It originated in 1954 when the late Franklin “Red” Mall and his wife, Peg, began taking groceries for holiday dinners to folks who were “having a tough time of it.”

In recent years more than 200

food boxes plus grocery gift cards have been delivered to families within the Sandwich School District. In addition, over 400 Christmas Cheer Boxes are taken to homes and care facilities on Christmas Eve by teams of Lion “Santas” and their helpers.

Donations of nonperishable foods are needed. In addition to canned goods, dry goods such as pastas, cereals, boxed dinners, etc., and high nutrition items such as peanut butter are suggested. Red collection bins are now in a number of sites where donations may be placed.

Bins can be found at: Ultimate Fitness, For Kids Only, Fox Valley YMCA, Arrowhead Medical Building, Sandwich Manor, Heartland Banks, First National Bank (formerly Castle), NB&T, Sandwich and Somonauk Libraries, United Church of Sandwich, St. Paul’s Church, Salem Lutheran Church, The Federated Church, Ironwood/Sandwich Rehab, Valley West Hospital, Plano Molding, Casey’s, Gjovik Ford, and Art’s Super Market.

Monetary donations are also needed to cover the cost of the grocery gift cards that accompany each food box. Bishop, age 82, formerly of St. Charles, passed away on Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at BRIA of Geneva Nursing Home in Geneva. She was born April 22, 1933, in New Albany, Mississippi, the daughter of Morris and Ethel (Miller) Stephens.

Glenda was united in marriage on February 4, 1950, in New Albany, Mississippi, to Mr. Arnold Earl Bishop and they spent 57 happy years together until his passing on December 14, 2007.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Melba (John) Gosnell of Cambridge, IL, Faye (Donald) Brigham of Geneva, IL, and Lori (Jeffrey) Summers of Fort Worth, TX; her seven grandchildren, James (Kim) Gosnell, Tammy (Eric) Powell, Christopher Gosnell, Jennifer (Craig) Borneman, Crystal Flowers, Mindy (Angie) Koz and Scott Schilling; her eleven great-grandchildren; her brother, Travis (Sheila) Stephens of Aurora, IL; her two sisters, Gail (David) Edwards of Poplar Bluff, MO and Ruth (Don) Olin of Oklahoma City, OK; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen Larson-Dempsay, Yorkville resident, passed away on November 20, 2015, with the same sassy attitude as when she lived.

She was born in Oswego Township on July 3, 1931.

Having grown up in Yorkville Mary Ellen came back to her roots after retiring. Once back “home” she became a consummate volunteer at the Kendall County Food Pantry (aka: “The Hat Lady”) and was a representative for that organization at their “Stand By Me” fundraiser

Rose was born March 6, 1929 in Kirksville, Missouri to E. Lynn and Marjie (Martin) Myers.

While in high school, her family moved from Missouri to Morris and she graduated from Morris High School in 1947. She was a graduate of the Joliet School of Cosmetology and was a licensed beautician for over 60 years.

Rose married Ivan M. Nelson on November 8, 1952, in Morris.

Ivan passed November 7, 2009.

Rose owned and operated the Newark Beauty Salon in their home until her retirement in the early 1990s. She enjoyed sewing and in later years taking weekly classes with her daughter Phyllis and sister Lenore to learn the art of porcelain doll making. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed her travels with the family.

She is survived by her son, Fred Nelson of Newark; her daughter, Phyllis (Richard) Johnson of Newark; her step daughter, Nancy (William) Bercott of Pace, FL; her step grandchildren, Angela (Michael) Dees of Pace, FL. John Bercott of Pace, FL. Travis Johnson of Belvidere, Kristopher (Laura) Johnson of Rockford and Casey

Johnson of Dallas, TX; and a brother, Joe (Carol) Myers of Morris.

Annabelle Rathbun, age 93, of Oswego, passed away on November 17, 2015, at her residence with her daughter at her side. She was born January 7, 1922, to Jacob and Maud (Heckerman) Longenecker in Whitehouse, Ohio. She greatly enjoyed gardening, playing games and quilting. She was a longtime member of The Church Of The Brethren in Boulder Hill.

She was married to L. Arden Rathbun for 66 ½ years until his death on December 4, 2007.

App Challenge open to 11th Dist. teens SHAW MEDIA U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, has announced that entries are open for the Congressional App Challenge for high school students.

The Congressional App Challenge is a yearly competition held by the House of Representatives to encourage high school students to show interest in the STEM subjects: science, technology, engineering, and math.

It is open to all high school students who reside or attend high school in the 11th Congressional District.

Students will design and build an original app as well as submit a short video

Local groups collecting food, coats, gloves Hundreds of dozens of homemade cookies and candies are needed to fill the 400 cheer boxes that will be delivered on Christmas Eve. Persons who would like to help in a hands-on way are welcome to assist in packing the grocery boxes at the Sandwich Fire Station on the evening of Dec. 17. The community can also assist with the packing of the cheer boxes on the evening of Dec. 23 at the United Church of Sandwich.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs are looking for volunteers who are interested in sharing their skills, talent and knowledge while volunteering to prepare tax returns.

Christmas Song and Carol Sing coming up

Chapel on the Green in Yorkville will have a Community Christmas song and Carol Sing, starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 13.

“Come and spend an hour singing the old familiar Christmas songs and carols,” said Martha Price,

co-chair of the event.

Tryna Zeedyk will narrate the historical backgrounds of the songs and carols and how they have become Christmas traditions. A song leader will guide the singing which will be accompanied on piano or the 1899 organ.

The Chapel will be decorated to add to the spirit of the season. There is no charge for this program. The Chapel is at Church and Center streets, just off Route 47, across from Yorkville’s Town Square Park.

Paul Schimpf, a U.S. Marine lieutenant colonel (retired), on Nov. 17 chronicled serving as lead American attorney-adviser to Iraqi prosecutors in dictator Saddam Hussein’s 2005-06 trial for crimes against humanity. He gave the keynote address at the November meeting of the Aurora Council, Navy League of the U.S. Schimpf is running for the Illinois 58th District State Senate seat.

Oswego-themed gifts available at Museum SHAW MEDIA Looking for a truly unique Oswego-themed gift for friends and relatives?

The latest entries in the Oswegoland Heritage Association’s Oswego’s Main Street Series miniature wooden replicas of historic Oswego buildings are available at the museum store.

Produced by Cats Meow of Wooster, Ohio, the first three buildings in the series last year were the Rank and Schlicker buildings in downtown Oswego and the Little White School Museum, plus the classic “Welcome to Oswegoland” sign sponsored

by the Oswego Women’s Civic Club.

This year the heritage association is offering the Tripp Insurance, Village Grind, and American Male & Company buildings, all located on North Main Street near the Oswego Public Library, plus the Dairy Hut on South Main. The original group of three buildings and the Oswegoland sign are also still available.

The facades of the buildings are architecturally accurate and measure approximately 6 x 4 inches each, with the building’s history on the reverse. Buildings are available at $20 each.

The facades of four more historic downtown Oswego buildings have been created in miniature and are now available for sale at Oswego’s Little White School Museum.

Also available at the museum store this holiday season are a selection of Oswego marked stoneware from the

Great Bay Pottery Co., North Hampton, N.H., along with books and pamphlets on Oswegoland history, and books

and videos featuring the Oswego area’s environmental crusader, “The Fox.” Copies of Oswego Township, a 128 page pictorial history containing dozens of historic photos from the museum’s collections are $20 each. “150 Years Along the Fox: The History of Oswego Township, Illinois,” a 192 page hardbound volume is available at $35 per copy.

“By Trace and Trail,” a history of stagecoach and mail routes through Oswego Township, is available at $10 per copy. Also available are monographs on Waubonsie Creek and the Oswego School District at

$1 each as well as “A Taste of the Region: Recipes from the Illinois Lincoln Highway National Scenic Byway,”

Delgado named Waubonsee Community College trustee The Waubonsee Community College Board of Trustees has appointed Jimmie Delgado to replace former trustee James Pilmer, who recently resigned upon accepting a new position as the executive director of the Fox Valley Park District.

Delgado will finish the rest of Pilmer’s term, which ends in 2017.

Delgado is currently the controller at Fox Metro Water Reclamation District in Oswego, and has more than 12 years of experience as an accountant. He is an MBA candidate at Aurora University with an expected graduation in May 2016.

Delgado’s ties to Waubon-

see began as an undergraduate. He graduated from Oswego High School and enrolled at Waubonsee after receiving a Lucile Gustafson Scholarship. In addition to volunteer service as part of the Gustafson Scholarship program, Delgado served as a peer tutor, Student Senate secretary and as Student Trustee during the 2002-03 academic year. He graduated from Waubonsee in 2003 and was named one of the college’s “Fab 40” in 2006.

After graduating from Waubonsee, Delgado enrolled at Aurora University (AU), where he was awarded the Dunham Scholarship and continued his community service activities through this scholarship program.

In addition to seeing Pope Francis at the Wednesday Audience, they visited the shrines of St. Francis, St. Clare, St. Benedict, St. Scholastica, Michael the Archangel, St. Matthew, Padre Pio and the mountain abbey at Monte Cassino. They were led by Deacon Dale and Chaplain Arlene Metcalfe, spiritual directors with DeaconTravel Ministries.

Goat comes to Plano Bible Church

Trinity Church collects worldwide children’s gifts This year Trinity Church served as a relay center for the Shoebox Collection for Operation Christmas Child through the Samaritan’s Purse. Over 1,000 shoeboxes were collected from members of Trinity Church and other churches and individuals. More than 100 boxes were given by Trinity. Shoeboxes were filled with items such as toys, candy, shoes, socks and personal hygiene items for boys and girls ages 2-14. They are sent to countries including Barbados, Burundi, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Suriname, Tanzania, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago. Though the project is titled, “Operation Christmas Child,” shoeboxes are delivered throughout the year due to the logistics of shipping, customs and delivery methods.

Illinois Farm Economics Summit scheduled in Dec. SHAW MEDIA Should cash rents be lowered? Will fertilizer and seed prices decline and provide some measure of relief? What do margins look like if grain prices recover to longer-term averages?

These and other questions will be addressed at this year’s Illinois Farm Economics Summit in December.

“The big story in Illinois agriculture in 2015 was the ‘margin squeeze’ faced by crop producers,” said U of I agricultural economist Scott Irwin. “This squeeze was brought on by continued declines in corn and soybean prices and costs of production that remained at historically high levels.

The key question going forward is how the crop sector will adjust to this new re-

ality.”

Speakers from the University of Illinois Extension farmdoc team will explore the farm profitability outlook and management challenges from several perspectives, including the 2015 outlook for prices, farm income prospects, land rents and valuation, long-term credit cycles, nutrient management, and the outlook for conventional bio-fuels.

Irwin said that the format for the meetings will be fast-paced and allow plenty of time for questions from the audience.

Sponsored by U of I Extension, the farm economics summit will be offered at five different locations during the month of December.

Tips offered on preventing wildlife damage in the yard Before we get to the consistent cold of winter, now would be good time to deal with potential future damage to our landscape plants.

This is one of those yard activities that will benefit the landscape next spring with more robust growth and less plant damage, and it is one I feel is important to address ever year about now.

Colder weather, frozen soil, fallen and windblown leaves and any accumulated snow will force rabbits to take shelter and begin to look for food anywhere they can. Once the ground is frozen, the wildlife will have fewer places to take shelter

While the weather remains favorable, rabbits will feed on the diversity of plant material in the home landscape, lessening damage to any one plant.

They will feed on grass, clover and other lawn weeds as long as the ground is open or has very little snow cover. Once those choices

are gone, rabbits turn to young twigs and branches of plants, and then once that food source is exhausted, tender bark on thin barked trees. Examples would be fruit trees, crabapples and burning bush. Come spring, it is common to find young trees completely girdled by the rabbits, having eaten the bark all around the small trunks from the ground up several inches. On the smaller plants, rabbits can eat them down to the ground quickly if that is the sole source of food. Rabbits tend to find a place to live for the winter and move out from there locating food. Damage

is worse closer to their winter home than farther out in the yard.

Feeding damage can be prevented using chicken wire or a more specific type of fencing designed to keep the younger rabbits from getting into your plantings next spring. This fencing has wire at a much smaller spacing near the bottom so a baby rabbit cannot get through it. This is not so important in the winter, but is great for next spring when offspring are feeding. If possible, get the fencing in place before we have cold weather and work it down into the soil surface so later when

the ground does freeze it is locked in place. If you have a perennial bed, it is easier to fence out the entire bed than create individual structures for each plant. If protecting young trees, the fencing will need to be several inches larger than you may think.

The height will vary, just keep in mind a rabbit will walk up the snowdrift and feed higher on the tree so a typical roll of poultry fence may not be high enough if you know your yard drifts around your trees, so plan accordingly.

There are other materials that can be found at most garden centers that work

well too. Plastic wraps that spiral around the trunk work. You may need to use more than one to get up high enough on the trunk. There also are rolls of tree wrap that will prevent feeding and provide winter protection from the sun, especially on thin barked trees.

Steps outlined for selecting the perfect tree this holiday season Selecting the “perfect” Christmas tree this holiday season is simply a matter of following a few steps, according to a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

“Picking out the perfect tree can be a fun, memory-filled family tradition,” said Ron Wolford, who offers the following tips to help select a fresh tree for the home and keep it looking its best.

Pick a spot in your home before heading out to buy it.

Pick a spot away from heat sources, such as TVs, fireplaces, radiators, heaters, and air vents. “A dried-out tree is a safety hazard,” he said.

Choose a tree that makes sense where it is to be displayed. If the tree is displayed in front of a large window, all four sides should look as good as possible. If the tree is against a wall, three good sides would be OK. A tree with two good sides would work in a corner.

Measure the height and width of the space where the tree will be placed.

“There is nothing worse than bringing a tree indoors only to find it’s too tall,” Wolford said. “Take a tape measure with you to

the farm. Trees always look smaller outdoors so measure to be sure and don’t forget to bring a cord to tie your tree to the car.”

If buying from a retail lot, Wolford recommends going during the day. “Choosing a tree in daylight is a much easier experience then trying to pick out a tree in a dimly lit lot,” he said. “Purchasing a tree from a Christmas tree farm ensures that you will have a fresh tree.

A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles.

“Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand.

Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree. It is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop,” he added.

Make sure the handle or base of the tree is straight and long enough so it will fit easily into a tree stand after fresh cuts are made for water uptake. Store the tree in an unheated garage or some other area out of the wind if you are not putting it up right away, Wolford noted.

“Make a fresh 1-inch cut on the butt end and place the tree in a bucket of warm wa-

ter. When you bring the tree indoors, make another fresh 1-inch cut and place the tree in a sturdy stand. The water reservoir of the stand should provide one quart of water

for every inch of diameter of the trunk.”

Be sure to keep the water level above the base of the tree. If the base dries out, resin will form over the cut

end and the tree will not be able to absorb water and will dry out quickly. Commercially prepared mixes, sugar, aspirin, or other additives in the water are not

necessary.

Hosted by the Kendall County 4-H Federation, the training provides information on parliamentary procedure, club officer duties and leadership tips.

Plus, the youth participated in fun skill-building activities.

The seven life skills explored were: self-understanding, communication, learning to learn, making decisions, managing resources, getting along with others, and working with groups.

4-H Federation will host a five-hour, skill-building workshop, also on Dec. 5, but at the Yorkville location. It is open to youth ages 8 to 18. Finally, on Saturday morning, Dec. 12, the Kane County 4-H Ambassadors will lead projects designed for ages 5 to 7 in St. Charles.

“You do not need to be a 4-H member to take advantage of any of these fun opportunities,” said Deanna Roby, 4-H Youth Development Educator with University of Illinois Extension. “Each workshop is designed with different ages in mind, and all three allow youth to have a hands-

on experience. In addition, parents can take the time to address items on their weekly or holiday checklists.”

4-H Robotics SPIN Club still taking sign-ups SHAW MEDIA Join Kendall County 4-H for a special interest (SPIN) club focused on robotics concepts and programming this school year. Led by qualified volunteers, this multi-month program will explore basic robotics design, programming, and principles.

“Open to youth in grades fifth to eighth, this SPIN club allows members to discover technology and engineering through a fun, hands-on experience,” said Jo Ann Britton, a 4-H Program Coordinator with University of Illinois Extension in Kendall County. “This program provides youth ownership of the project in all its stages, and the process promotes teamwork, communication and organizational skills.”

The team will begin by working with a Lego Mindstorm kit to understand the functions, and in January, the group will start to address a specified statewide 4-H challenge.

The team is encouraged to participate in both the tri-county 4-H Robotics Showcase in spring 2016 and the State 4-H Challenge on April 23, 2016.

Native seeds are especially successful germinating via this method because they need the repeated freezing and thawing.

The resulting plants will be featured at the annual Master Gardener Plant Sale, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2016.
