More summer school offerings proposed

news@kendallcountynow.com Yorkville School Board members will be asked to approve three more summer school programs at their March 28 meeting.

Michael Duback, Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning, said that administrators would like to offer a three week program for English speaking students in the dual language program. The aim would be to give them more practice in speaking Spanish so they don’t lose ground over the summer.

That program would be offered from July 11 to July 29 and would cost the district about $2,000, not including transportation.

He also proposed a one-week program for English speaking kindergarten students about to enter the dual language program. It would give them an idea of what to expect in the fall.

Duback estimated the cost of the July 25 to 29 program at $500, not including transportation.

Administrators also will recommend regular summer school classes in language arts and math at elementary schools that do not qualify for Title I federal grant funding.

Purcell wins GOP race for coroner She picks up decisive win over challenger Carl Gutierrez of Oswego

mschury@kendallcountynow.com Jacquie Purcell took the Republican nomination for Kendall County coroner Tuesday night. Purcell beat out GOP challenger Carl Gutierrez of Oswego.

Final ballot results showed Purcell with 8,675 votes to 6,858 for Gutierrez.

“I am just so happy right now – I felt confident all day,” Purcell said. “I am so grateful and so thankful.”

She said she hopes to restore integrity and respect to the office if elected to the position in the November general election.

“From the very first piece of literature I had printed it said on there ‘integrity’ – true integrity and I meant it from the very beginning of my campaign and I mean it right now,” Purcell said. “Day one, integrity will be restored back into that office.”

Purcell has been a deputy coroner in Kendall County since 2003. The vic-

tory comes despite the current incumbent coroner, Republican Ken Toftoy, endorsing Gutierrez in the race.

She said the victory came down to voters picking the candidate with the most experience and she was the “common sense choice.”

When asked if she thought the Democrats would slate a candidate against her in November, Purcell said she doubted it.

“I’ve had a lot of Democrat support,” Purcell said. “This was a hard fight with Carl and I just don’t know that there is anybody that would be able to win against me in November.

I’m not trying to be arrogant saying that.”

Purcell’s husband, John, also won his bid for the Republican nomination for Kendall County Board in District 1.

Recognition a long time coming Region should for Native American code talkers pursue new Metra study OUR VIEW

The chairman of the Metra commuter rail service’s board of directors, Martin Oberman, threw some cold water on continuing efforts by Kendall County governmental officials to secure commuter rail service for county municipalities during a meeting convened by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, in Yorkville last week.

At issue is whether it would be worthwhile to spend $6.6 million in federal funds on yet another study examining a possible Metra expansion into the county. Oberman told officials that if he were in their shoes, “...I could use that $6.6 million for something I could sink my teeth into right now rather than a study that is going to sit on a shelf.”

Oberman also noted that Metra is currently faced with its own daunting financial challenges, including an estimated $11.7 billion in capital infrastructure needs.

Oberman’s comments serve to put county and municipal officials in a tough spot. They could take Oberman’s advice and lobby federal and state officials to redirect the federal funds to help pay for the widening or resurfacing of one of the county’s busy highways or they can soldier on and secure completion of the study.

We believe Metra service should remain a long-range goal for the county and its municipalities and county and municipal officials should support the completion of the study to obtain a better understanding of the current cost to extend Metra service.

They should also make certain the study provides a definitive answer to the question of whether Kendall County or a portion of the county would have to join the Regional Transportation Authority in order to secure Metra service.

By continuing with their Metra service effort, county and municipal officials will be doing their part to one day help relieve some of that traffic congestion that is already slowing rush-hour commuters to a crawl on Routes 30, 47 and 34.

Oswego Village President Gail Johnson correctly noted that if the proposed study is not completed, the county and its municipalities will not be in a position to claim additional federal funding to help pay for the service extension – should those funds ever become available.

“Without the [study] we have nothing,” she said. Johnson is correct. The cost of the study will be worth it if it keeps Kendall County positioned to move to the next step in its quest for Metra service.

The feature film, “Wind Talkers,” was probably the first time most people heard that Native Americans, members of the Navajo Tribe in the case of the movie, were pressed into service during World War II to create secure communications, foiling efforts by both the Germans and Japanese to listen in.

But the Navajo was far from the only tribe involved in the project, and World War II wasn’t the first time Native Americans were pressed into service to secure voice communications during wartime.

During World War I, the men of the 142nd Infantry Regiment, comprised of National Guardsmen from Texas and Oklahoma, were suddenly and unexpectedly thrust into combat when a portion of the French line collapsed and Germans poured into rear areas. During the confusion, an officer of the 142nd overheard some of his men talking back and forth in a strange language, which turned out to be Choctaw.

The army was suffering because its communications were being intercepted by the Germans who were tapping their landlines, and the officer’s bright idea was to put Choctaws at both ends of the unit’s telephone lines to translate from English to Choctaw at one end and back into English at the other. The idea proved a rousing success.

It was so successful that according to the U.S. Army, after the war, Germany sent some scholars to the U.S. to covertly study Native American languages in case another war broke out, but the government discovered their aim and sent them back home.

The reason the code talkers were so effective was that of all the Indian languages, only the Cherokees had a written language, famously developed by Sequoia. As a result, the only way to learn any of the languages was to live with the tribes, which pretty much limited the opportunities to missionaries and government officials.

Ironically, the U.S. government had done its level best to eradicate the languages of the Native People, going so far as to punish students at government-run Indian schools who were caught speaking their own languages.

But when World War II broke out, their best efforts had failed to stamp out the Indians’ languages and the idea of “code talkers” was quickly revived.

The Navajos who served with the U.S. Marines are the best known code talkers, but both the Marines and the Army also made use of servicemen from the Comanche, Ojibwa (Chippewa), Choctaw, Creek, Hopi, Kiowa, Menominee, Seminole, Oneida, Pawnee, Sac and Fox, and both Lakota and Dakota Sioux tribes as well as many others. In all, some 33 tribes and tribal subgroups served during the war as code talkers.

Even so, with war on the horizon, Native American men began flocking to the colors. Early in 1941, on the eve of World War II, a group of young men from the Fox and Sac homeland at Tama, Iowa, enlisted in the Iowa National Guard. They were assigned to the 168th Infantry Regiment, a component of the 34th Infantry Division.

Eight of the men were assigned to the communication section of Company H in the 168th’s 2nd Battalion. The Fox and Sac code talkers included Dewey Roberts, Edward Benson, Melvin Twin and Dewey Youngbear, and two sets of brothers, Frank and Willard Sanache and Judy Wayne Wabaunasee and Mike Wayne Wabaunasee (whose surname ought to ring a bell with Fox Valley residents).

I haven’t been able to track down the origin of the Wabaunasee boys’ surname, but it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility they might have some distant relationship to our Chief Waubonsee, even if he was a Potawatomi.

After training in Louisiana, the men of the 34th Division were loaded aboard transports and sailed to Northern Ireland where they received more training, before being assigned to the invasion of North Africa.

They went ashore at Algiers and then moved on into Tunisia where they collided with Gen. Rommel’s Afrika Korps in some of the U.S. Army’s first heavy land warfare of World War II. In fact, the Fox and Sac boys from Tama became the first code talkers to find themselves in combat.

And it didn’t go well. At the battles of Faid and Kasserine passes in February 1943 the inexperience of the U.S. Army’s commanders became all too apparent, as the Germans and Italians chewed up both the 1st Armored Division’s obsolete Grant tanks and the badly deployed men in the 168th Infantry.

And given their positions as communications scouts, three of the Sac and Fox code talkers were captured, Frank Sanache by the Italians, while Dewey Youngbear and Judy Wayne Wabaunasee were captured by the Germans. All three spent the rest of the war in German prisoner of war camps,

5 like a grade school bully. Just because you talk tough doesn’t make you tough. Trump simplifies issues that are much more complex. In most cases there is no way he will be able to keep his promises.

I think people need to try to become more informed about the candidates. Even if you disagree with who I vote for, try to make a more informed decision when you vote. I will be voting for Hillary Clinton, but if you are voting Republican, I suggest you give John Kasich a look. I may not agree with all his ideas, but he is certainly a very qualified candidate. He is very reasonable.

He is not outspoken and has not received as much attention as he deserves. Some people say their vote doesn’t matter.

Well, if Trump or Sanders win their party’s nomination, maybe your vote could have prevented that.

To the Editor: Yorkville High School has taken a wrong turn in allowing cellphones/electronic devices during the school day. This student-led initiative of allowing cellphone use during lunch periods, study halls, and passing periods should never have been approved. I am shocked and saddened that the quality of education is not given top priority for YHS. The academic performance of the school will suffer as a result of this new policy.

Cellphones are a distraction that even adults have difficulty controlling. If a student in study hall has a choice of a video game, reading a Facebook feed, or texting a friend versus reading a book or writing an essay, what will they choose? YHS is not even in the top 100 in the “Best Public High Schools in Illinois” in 2016 according to Niche.com, a national ranking and review website. YHS will sink even lower in rankings, given their focus to prioritize cellphone use above academic work.

I believe this cellphone policy could also lead to increased bullying at YHS. Who will stop a student from texting a bullying message during school hours? Who will stop a student from taking a photograph of another student and sending this throughout the school? Teachers should not and cannot be held responsible to monitor these behaviors. Students will now be able to access any website on school time.

School computers have filters to prevent looking up inappropriate websites. A student’s cellphone likely does not have this filter.

In conclusion, I am fearful for the future education of our students. I hope this trial cellphone policy fails. Since when does the school board cave in to students’ desires?

There is absolutely no educational benefit to having phones in YHS. There is merit to technology in education through students completing a PowerPoint presentation or other similar assignments. But cellphones are essentially a device for communication, entertainment, and for social media which all are contrary to education. I do not want this poor policy trickling down to the middle school or elementary schools.

To the Editor: I would first state that I am a 60 year-old moderate Democrat. This year’s Republican and Democratic primaries indicate people want change from the previous status quo. They are not happy with the direction our country has been headed.

Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have been the candidates who those wanting change have been attracted to. I would certainly admit everything is not perfect, but can Trump or Sanders really improve the state of our nation? I don’t think so.

Bernie Sanders wants to have a Medicare-type of healthcare, a single payer national health care system. He wants free college tuition for all and a minimum wage of $15 an hour . This all sounds good on paper, but is it realistic? All of his proposals to pay for this are said to be far too optimistic by most economists. We are already taxed too much. One thing I have learned in life is you rarely get anything for free. If it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly is. President Obama was lucky to get Obamacare approved with a Democratic Senate and Congress. Do you really think Sanders can get any of his ideas passed? I will admit I would like a single payer healthcare system, but realize it would be next to impossible to pass due to a Republican Congress and the insurance/drug company lobbies.

Yorkville man arrested in public indecency incident SHAW MEDIA A Yorkville man, Christopher A. Assmar, 33, of the 300 block of Orange Street, was arrested by Oswego police detectives at his residence in connection with a public indecency incident that occurred in Oswego last Friday.

Police said Assmar has been charged with two counts of public indecency, one a felony charge and the other a misdemeanor charge.

According to police, at approximately 1 p.m.

last Friday a female runner called police after a male driver, after asking for directions, allegedly exposed himself to her at Bloomfield Circle East at Colchester Drive. The man’s description matched the culprit in a similar incident that occurred two weeks earlier in the village. During the investigation, detectives were able to identify a possible suspect and made contact with Assmar at his Yorkville home, where he was arrested and taken into custody.

Police said one of the charges against Assmar is

classified as a felony since it occurred within 500 feet of a school while children were present on the grounds.

Assmar was transported to the Kendall County Jail in Yorkville. A judge has set his bond at $10,000.

Police said the suspect climbed into a white Ford F150 pickup truck registered to an individual in Aurora and then left the parking lot.

DUI arrest Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Seth Alan Rife, 33, of the 0-10 block of Ottawa Court, Oswego, at 11:38 p.m. March 12 on a charge of driving under the influence.

Sheriff’s deputies were summoned to

Ottawa Court on a report of an unconscious subject in a vehicle parked in the roadway at Ottawa Court and Chippewa Drive. The person was subsequently taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

Scam reported An 81-year-old Yorkville resident reported a suspected scam to Kendall County sheriff’s deputies March 10. According to the sheriff’s deputies, the victim reported receiving an offer over the telephone for some real estate he owns. The caller asked the victim to send a Moneygram in the amount of $898 to the caller to pay for a title search. The victim did so and was called again and asked to send an additional $1,100 to pay for tests. The victim declined and then called the sheriff’s office.

DUI charge after crash Kendall County sheriff’s deputies arrested Cristian Segura-Castillo, 23, of the 100 block of 4th Street, Joliet, after the vehicle he was driving was involved in a rollover crash in the 15000 block of Ridge Road in Seward Township south of Oswego at 12:20 a.m. March 15.

Police said Segura-Castillo was not injured in the crash. However, he faces charges of driving under the influence and was cited for improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and illegal transportation of alcohol.

KENDALL COUNTY RECORD Area residents are invited to share and read books from the Little Free Library placed recently in front of the Yorkville Parks and Recreation Department building at 201 W. Hydraulic Ave. in the city’s downtown courtesy of the efforts of Girl Scout Brownie Troop 1441 with the support of city officials.

The library was constructed by Jeff Creps with the assistance of the Brownies and their dads.

Both Menard’s and Home Depot contributed to the project. Community contributors included Carol Morris and Judy Somerlot from the Friends of the Yorkville Public Library and Lynda Cox from the Yorkville Garden Club.

Last weekend, the Yorkville Middle School wrestling team competed in the IESA state wrestling tournament. The Foxes captured third place out of nearly 130 teams with eight state qualifiers and five state medalists.

Cale Reeder wrestled an outstanding tournament on his way to a state runner-up finish. After his first round bye, Reeder pinned his opponents in the first round, quarterfinals and semifinals to

advance to the finals. Reeder captured second overall and finished the season as the highest placing individual wrestler in YMS school history.

Joey Roberts placed third while Jackson Murphy and Ben Stemmet captured fourth and Robby Isaacs was sixth to round out the medalists for Yorkville.

Foxes finish 11-17 in coach’s 1st year

In Mike Dunn’s first year as coach of the Yorkville boys basketball team, the Foxes went through their fair share of ups and downs.

Yorkville ended up 11-17 overall and 3-10 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference. The Foxes started the year with six seniors, ended up with four and have nine juniors coming back next year.

“As far as wins and losses went, we were not where we wanted to be, but it’s a process,” Dunn said. “We are extremely excited about the future. The conference was loaded this year, but the kids bought into what we were trying to do. We will see improvements.”

Yorkville started the season at Ottawa’s Thanksgiving tournament, where it went 2-2 and placed fifth. The Foxes went on a five game winning streak into the Plano Christmas Classic, where they placed 15th. Entering 2016, they had an overall record of 8-6.

Once Yorkville got under .500, it stayed there for the rest of the season.

The Foxes struggled in league play with wins against Morris, Rochelle and Geneseo. DeKalb won the East Division’s league title and there was a three-way

tie in the West Division between LaSalle-Peru, Sterling and Ottawa.

The Foxes’ season ended in the first round of the Class 4A Minooka Regional against Romeoville (58-56). It was the final game for seniors Cameron Van Boekel, Dan Kaczmarek, Tracy Kurz and Thor Hester. Kaczmarek led the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game and was a NIB-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Van Boekel averaged 6.7 points per game earned the Jerry Farber award. Van Boekel, Kaczmarek and Hester were also Academic All-Conference.

Leading the pack of returning juniors is DeAndre Manuel, who averaged 6.1 points per game, earned the team’s Most Improved Player award and was a NIB-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. Josh Tatum (4.3 ppg) and Austin Avery (3.5 ppg) are also back, along with Jason Lewan, Nick Owens (Coaches Award), Jake Eberhart, Alexx Nauman, Jonathan Suarez and Joel Salinas. Academic All-Conference was earned by Avery, Lewan, Salinas and Tatum.

“We should have a good off-season,” Dunn said. “These are good kids who work hard and want to be here. I’m excited.”

Katherine Hacker

Katherine Hacker plans to major in accounting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A Yorkville High School senior, she is a candidate for the 2016 Student of the Year scholarship award.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office.

Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2016 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview.

Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

Activities, jobs and honors Katherine is the daughter of Jacqueline and Michael Taylor.

She has been a class officer every year, serving as treasurer as a freshman and senior, and as vice president as a sophomore and junior. A three-year member of the Future Business Leaders of America, she was a manager as a junior and again this year.

Her other activities include being a member of Teens Reaching Youth and of Student Council for all four years at Yorkville High School. In addition, she serves on the Principal’s Advisory Committee this year. Katherine has worked as a corn detasseler and at McDonald’s.

Roberts lost and dropped into wrestlebacks. He kept his composure and wrestled many matches to earn his way back onto the podium in third.

Murphy wrestled well during both days of the tournament. After losing in the quarterfinals, Murphy outworked opponents in the wrestlebacks for several come-from-behind victories to place fourth in state. Stemmet wrestled a tough tournament, losing a very close match in the quarterfinals. He regrouped and earned his way to the medal rounds by winning several matches in the wrestlebacks.

Isaacs, a first-year wrestler, had one of his best tournaments yet. He was recruited from the football team for his

size and athleticism. After making it all the way to the semifinals, he lost to the eventual state champion. Isaacs reached the medal round and took sixth.

Justin Cole wrestled well, beating several ranked kids early in the tournament. He eventually lost in the quarterfinals and wrestlebacks. First-time state qualifier Caleb Redman came out strong, but suffered a heartbreaking loss in the first round, ending his tournament. Nathan Batres was a first-time state qualifier and only a second-year wrestler; a testament to his hard work and dedication to the program. Batres dropped his first match in a close decision, ending his tournament.

“As coaches, our goal has always been to shape our athletes into better people through the principles of wrestling,” Yorkville coach Shawn Corwin said.

A NEW LOOK FOR YORKVILLE SQUAD Lauren Anderson takes over Foxes’ program

Lauren Anderson has returned to coaching in Kendall County.

In July 2015, Anderson became the newest Yorkville girls soccer coach.

She was previously in the West Aurora school district, and prior to that coached at Oswego East. She is a 2000 Oswego grad who also played soccer at Kent State.

“I missed this,” said Anderson, who took over for Andrew Johnson after he resigned. “I am really excited for the season to start. This is truly an awesome group of girls. They are hard workers and a good group to coach. I feel very fortunate that going back into coaching, I have a great group of kids.”

Anderson inherits a Yorkville squad that went 8-11-2 overall and finished 0-6-1 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference. Sophomore forward

Peyton Willie is the lone returning All-Conference player after she led the Foxes with 26 goals, five assists and five hat tricks. She has already verbally committed to the University of Illinois.

“She’s an extremely talented player. Everyone in the area is going to know her name if they don’t already,” Anderson said of Willie.

The other returning players include seniors Alyssa Tirado and Madison Mahr, juniors Kelsi Brummerstedt and Jessica Luptak, sophomores Peyton Bammer, Madi Brusak, Nicole Loquercio, Katy O’Malley and Catelyn Peterson. The newcomers are freshmen Yari Aguado, Katie Neahring, Rebecca Schuberth, Katie Straznickas, Holly Sutkay, Abigale Wahl, sophomore Emily Brown and juniors Lupe Anguiano, Jessica Lizzio and Allison Novak.

Last year, there was just one team in the program. This year the roster has grown to include two teams, even though the majority of the varsity squad are underclassmen.

“That was one of my first goals – to come in here and get two teams going.

In order to build a program, we need to get these numbers up,” Anderson said.

“We have six freshmen on varsity, which is exciting. These girls are going to be playing together for years to come, which is just going to help us.”

Yorkville’s first conference game is April 7 against DeKalb, followed

by Sycamore, the defending league champs, on April 12.

Oswego East 4, Yorkville 2: Yorkville fell short to Oswego East in 4-2 loss to open the 2016 season. The Wolves

led 2-0 before Straznickas scored Yorkville’s first goal of the season with a shot outside the 18 yard box at 21:50. Oswego East answered back with 11:14 left on the clock.

Straznickas put Yorkville back on the scoreboard with a goal off a free kick with only 1:33 left in the first half. The Wolves scored the lone goal in the second half. Anguiano had a stand out performance in defense while Lizzio played 80 minutes in goal with 14 saves.
