A Herscher High School teacher is due at the Kendall County Court on Jan. 7 on charges of multiple counts of felony criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery in connection with an incident involving students from that school at a Yorkville hotel last month.

The teacher, David Murphy, 29, is free on bond, which was set at $250,000 shortly after he turned himself in to Yorkville police David Jan. 1. According Murphy to conditions of his bond, Murphy must wear a GPS monitoring device and not have contact with any minors.

The Illinois High School Association’s website lists Murphy as head wrestling coach at the school located in downstate Herscher.

According to Yorkville police, the incident that led to the charges against Murphy occurred the weekend of Dec. 11. The Herscher High School wrestling team was competing that weekend in a tournament at Plano High School.

The charges involve five juveniles and one 18-year-old victim.

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com The Aurora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (AACVB) has put the welcome mat out for the Village of Oswego to rejoin the organization.

Cort Carlson, the bureau’s executive director, made a pitch before village trustees Tuesday evening on behalf of the organization that promotes local towns in the lower Fox Valley as tourist destinations using revenues from a hotel tax collected in each of the participating towns.

Municipalities currently in the AACVB are: Aurora, Batavia, Big Rock, Hinckley, Montgomery, North Aurora, Plano, Sandwich, Sugar Grove and Yorkville.

Village trustees, however, seemed skeptical of Carlson’s request. The village had been part

of the visitors bureau in the 1990s but left in 2002. At that time, the Oswego Economic Development Corporation (OEDC), a public-private agency, assumed responsibility of tourism marketing for the village.

The OEDC, however, disbanded a few years ago when the board voted to create its own economic development office.

Village Board member Pam Parr told Carlson she wanted to know if re-joining the AACVB would mean the village would receive a better return on its tourism dollars than from its current, in-house efforts.

“I’m trying to find out if there is really a cost benefit or not,” Parr said.

Carlson said the AACVB offers a more regional approach to tourism promotion than a municipality like the village can do on its own.

Murphy also faces an additional misdemeanor charge of renting a hotel room for someone knowing alcohol would be provided to minors, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Charges relating to the first victim includes one count of Class 3 aggravated battery where prosecutors say Murphy knowingly made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature.

Murphy is alleged to have pulled the victim’s pants back to expose her underwear, squeezed her buttocks and groped her breasts over her clothing.

Charges relating to the second victim include aggravated criminal sexual abuse. According to the state’s attorney’s office, Murphy knowingly groped the victim’s breast for the purpose of his own sexual arousal. That charge is based on a position of trust, authority or supervision in relation to the victim.

According to the charges, while at a public place of accommodation – the hotel room – Murphy squeezed the victim’s buttocks, kissed her on the forehead and pulled back her pants to expose her

underwear.

Murphy is charged with two counts of Class 3 aggravated battery toward another victim. The first count is knowingly making physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with the victim in a public place of accommodation.

According to the charges, Murphy kissed the victim on the cheek and lips and squeezed her buttocks and pulled back her pants to expose her underwear.

A second count alleges he committed a Class 3 aggravated battery. Murphy made physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with her, put his arm around the victim, squeezed her buttocks while saying “last night was fun,” according to the state’s attorney’s office.

The fourth victim alleges Murphy squeezed her buttocks and pulled back her pants to expose her underwear.

The fifth victim alleges Murphy grabbed the victim by the throat and stated that “he was going to kill the [victim] and rip out [the victim’s] larynx,” according to the charges.

The sixth victim alleges Murphy grabbed her by the neck and shoved her into a hotel room door, saying: “If you don’t get them to open the door in 10 seconds I’ll break the [expletive] door down.”

The village’s hotel tax currently generates about $70,000 annually. If the village were to rejoin the AACVB they would have to give the organization about $63,000 of those revenues, according to Daniel Di Santo, village administrator.

Michele Brown, community relations manager for Oswego, said the village currently uses the revenues to promote local events, including PrairieFest and Wine on the Fox. The AACVB has an estimated $500,000 annual budget for the current fiscal year, according to Carlson Village President Gail Johnson felt that with Oswego contributing $60,000 “seemed like a high number” since Oswego only comprises

about 10 percent of the total population in the bureau’s service area.

“This doesn’t seem to correlate with our current population numbers,” Johnson said.

Parr agreed.

“What are you willing to give us for $60,000 and a percentage and some grant money; and it’s got to be more than--’You can be in our region’,” Parr said. “It’s just got to be more than that.”

Village Board member Joe West pointed out that as the board works on its budget they will be looking for money to develop a marketing and branding strategy for the village.

“That’s something that is going to cost money to create and if we are also going to be sending money out of the village to join this bureau then that’s also money we don’t have to pay for this marketing and branding strategy,” he said.

New DUI laws have officials on the fence

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Several changes to Illinois’ driving under the influence (DUI) laws went into effect Jan. 1.

One changes allows some offenders to drive with a breath monitoring device in their vehicle under certain circumstances.

Yorkville Police Chief Rich Hart said he hadn’t heard any local law enforcement agencies clamoring for an expansion of the breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID) program, but sees merit in its use.

“I kind of understand where they are coming from that people have to work and support their families, but it always comes down to privilege and if they [DUI offenders] are a danger to themselves or others on the road they shouldn’t be on the road,” Hart said.

He added that he doesn’t have a problem with the BAIID device but they can’t be expected to prevent people from drinking and driving.

“A lot of times the issues with those devices is if you have a passenger in the car they can always blow into it if they haven’t been drinking,” he said.

SB 627 lays out major provisions based on recommendations from the state’s Traffic Safety Advisory Committee. One such provision allows offenders to apply for a monitoring device driving permit or restricted driving permit, with the installation of a BAIID. The legislation also requires any offender with two or more

DUI or reckless homicide convictions to install a BAIID as a condition of a restricted driving permit.

The act also requires an offender to install a BAIID as a condition of the permit if they are convicted of a DUI involving death or great bodily harm.

“The concept behind the laws is probably a good natured thought but like everything else I’m sure people will find a way around that,” Hart mentioned.

He did point out that if an offender wants to drive on a restricted driving permit they do have to meet some sanctions.

Another new law allows drivers who had their license permanently revoked after a fourth DUI conviction to obtain a restricted driving permit after five years if the person shows a minimum three years of uninterrupted sobriety and successful completion all of the recommended rehabilitation activity.

“Before that it was tough and it was really difficult for them to get their license back,” Hart said, adding that there was a resident who had three DUIs during the 1980s and he was permanently revoked from driving.

The man has since passed away but had been sober for 25 years and the sheriff and ranking law enforcement officials wrote letters for him vouching for his character and that he has been sober.

“He had to spend a lot of money and go to special hearings down in Springfield but he did get a restricted driving permit back,” he said. “That’s the only person I ever wrote a letter like that

The question of whether repeat DUI offenders should be able to drive again hits Hart personally.

“I see both sides of it. I’ve got a family member who’s been revoked for life and he can’t get to job sites where he wants to work and if his rides fall through he loses his job,” he said. “But at the same time he’s the one who caused the problems that led to his driving issues.”

Kendall County State’s Attorney Eric Weis feels similarly ambivalent about the new laws, though he hopes they will do some good if a person is trying to straighten out their life.

Weis said it doesn’t change things from his standpoint in prosecuting these offenders.

“The criminal punishment doesn’t change who goes to prison

and what a conviction does to your charge,” he said, “It does changes some of the ramifications with the Secretary of State’s Office.”

For instance while the new laws allow offenders to possibly get restricted driving permits it wouldn’t make any difference if that person is on probation or in jail.

“It’s a good start. I think that these devices do help and obviously if you are following the rules you are not drinking and you’re not driving, which is what we want,” Weis said. “It will be interesting to see what happens, obviously those that have reformed and truly taken steps to correct themselves from a problem that they have – that’s a good step to making them a more productive member of society.”

Weis and Hart both say there

hasn’t been a great spike in DUI arrests in the county during the last few years. Weis pointed out that there are about 250 DUI cases in the county annually.

Hart adds that Yorkville police had a traffic unit that would focus on DUIs but in 2010 it was folded back into the general patrol.

“They flow up and down – sometimes they go up because a lot of them are related around accidents,” Hart said. “We have been having more accident-related DUIs than in the past.”

One thing concerning Hart and Weis is the company that is profiting from installing the BAIID devices in offenders’ vehicles. The devices are paid for by the offender and there is a rental fee as well as an installation fee.

“If they can’t afford it they are just going to drive around with out a license like most of them do nowadays,” Hart said. “We stop people every day that have revoked or suspended licenses that can’t afford to pay the fees to get their stuff reinstated.”

The next step might be more advanced technology. Weis and Hart both said devices that DUI offenders can wear that monitor their alcoholic intake around the clock. That monitoring is a little out of reach because it is expensive and cumbersome but it could be where the monitoring technology is heading in short order.

“If they’ve already got ankle bracelets out there that detect that these people are drinking alcohol … it’s only a matter of time before they are able to tie that into a computer in your car,” Hart said.

Shaw looks ahead to final year as Kendall County chairman

By MATT SCHURY mschury@kendallcountynow.com Kendall County Board Chairman John Shaw believes that 2016 could be a year that growth begins to return to Kendall County or at least the prologue to growth returning.

As Shaw begins the final year of his term on the County Board he sat down with the Record Newspapers to reflect on 2015 and look ahead to his goals for county government for 2016.

Shaw started his recap and look ahead with the fact that the county is currently negotiating five contracts with the Fraternal Order of Police that will have a huge impact on next year’s budget.

Shaw couldn’t get into specifics but did say there was some confusion as they try to sort out the details and there are some lively discussions over benefits and wages and other things.

“It just turns into the Bickersons,” he said. “Mr. [Bob] Davidson’s call to arms and his whole thing about being re-elected is that we have to cut taxes – taxes, taxes, taxes,” Shaw said.

He added that while cutting taxes is a noble endeavor there are

Turning toward the county’s Health Department, Shaw acknowledged that there is some fence mending needed. In November the County Board requested that the Health Department pay for a portion of their employees’ health insurance costs and benefits out of their department’s budget instead of the county’s general fund.

“Mr. [John] Purcell came up with the idea that for a certain part of [health department employees’ salaries] benefits funded by us,” Shaw said. “Their budget is in the millions over there and it’s grown.”

Shaw said some of this animosity was brought upon by Dr. Amaal Tokars, health department director, addressing the board at a meeting this fall.

“We were read a manifesto

by Dr. Amaal Tokars that told us we were a bunch of bullies and I remember listening it and wondering what is she trying to say,” Shaw said. “It’s going to be interesting to see how this all turns out.

It is a sad problem because there are a lot of good people over there.

There’s some hard feelings now.”

‘Per-diem-gate’

Shaw added that he might bring up the idea of switching County Board members to a straight salary instead of paying out a per diem for meeting attendance.

In addition to an $85 per diem for going to meetings, board members collect an annual salary and stipends. They can also collect reimbursement for mileage as well as opt in to the county’s health insurance program and they can become vested in the state’s IMRF retirement system.

As Shaw put it he’d like to have

“per-diem-gate” on a meeting agenda soon for discussion.

In 2013 a Kendall County grand jury began investigating the per diem matter and the sheriff’s office interviewed 11 current and former board members. A committee was also formed to look into the per diem payments. The committee had been asking the 11 board members to pay back $45,997. The Kendall County State’s Attorney Office later determined the members owed just under $10,000 collectively.

Following the investigation, the County Board voted to switch from per diems to just salaries but the motioned failed.

“We voted on it a year ago and it was a tie,” he explained.

Shaw doesn’t want to form another committee but plans to bring it up for discussion and see if there is any consensus.

“There’s an election coming up and maybe people would like to take time to hear,” he said. “It depends on what the rhetoric is when we come up to the primary.”

When asked about the prospect of growth returning to Kendall County in 2016, Shaw said he is optimistic.

“People have said, ‘Do you want

the growth?’ Well, why wouldn’t I want the growth?” he said. “The encouraging factor is that the south end of Yorkville and across the Route 47 on the east side … they are still building houses out there. I think that it’s starting to come back – the building.”

Townships should stay

Shaw mentioned that he sees a place for township government in Kendall County.

“I hear stuff all the time about doing away with townships, which to me doesn’t make any sense for Kendall County,” he said.

Shaw pointed out that the assessment department would have to hire 12 new employees if they no longer could use the township assessors. He added that he also talked to Fran Klaas, county’s highway engineer, who doesn’t like the idea either.

“People are very demanding about their roads in the townships,” Shaw said, adding that maintenance and snow removal is done through the townships.

Shaw said it might make sense to eliminate townships in a county with larger municipalities that overlap but Kendall County still has a lot of unincorporated area.

Hopeful signs for wave of business growth Several hopeful signs for a significant uptick in the pace of commercial and industrial business development in Kendall County were evident in 2015.

In Yorkville, a Chicago-based investor purchased the Kendall Marketplace shopping center last summer and the new owner talked of “accelerating development and leasing” at the center on Route 34 at Cannonball Trail. Also, the completion of the Route 47 widening project last fall should also help make properties along and near the highway in the city more attractive to potential retailers.

In Montgomery, a new supermarket – La Chiquita – opened in November following a $6 million renovation of the former Montgomery Marketplace supermarket store on Douglas Road, while U-Haul purchased the former Settlers Landing shopping center, also on Douglas Road.

Meanwhile in the village’s downtown, the new River View restaurant opened along the east bank of the river in the village’s downtown and South Moon BBQ opened in the former Gray’s Mill on the river’s west bank.

On Montgomery’s west side, American Crystal Sugar Co. started construction on a $40 million bulk sugar storage and transfer facility. The project is significant not only due its size and dollar value, but American Crystal is also the first firm to locate in the new west side TIF (tax increment financing) district established by the village board in 2014. Village officials have said they hope to soon announce the name of a second firm that will locate in the TIF district. Along Orchard Road on Montgomery’s west side, the opening of a new Speedway gas station has spurred hopes that additional retailers will be locating

along the road south of Route 30 in Kendall County.

In Oswego, vacant storefronts remain hard to find, especially along the village’s thriving Route 34 retail corridor. Meanwhile, village officials continue to work to secure a new tenant for the most prominent available retail space: the former Dominick’s store in the Oswego Commons shopping center. Village President Gail Johnson said she is optimistic that plans will be forthcoming this year for the redevelopment of long-vacant properties in the village’s downtown. Those plans, she confirmed, will likely be tied in with the village board’s approval of a TIF district in the downtown area.

From 2000 to 2010, Kendall County’s population more than doubled from 54,000 to 114,000. All that population growth served to attract regional and national

retailers and restaurants to the county communities. County municipalities also gained many smaller industrial businesses and professional offices. But the rapid pace of population growth slowed dramatically as new home construction all but came to a halt in the county – outside of the village of Oswego – in the wake of the 2008 recession. As a result, growth in county’s business sector – retail, commercial and industrial – also slowed.

We don’t expect to see the halcyon days of residential and business development that took place here during the first several years of this century return anytime soon. But with national economic conditions continuing to slowly improve and unemployment down, there is reason for some renewed optimism that the pace of business development will quicken here in 2016.

Junk mail reveals site of God’s ‘phone booth’ A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with a friend about how you can influence almost anyone in the United States by simply purchasing a mailing list and sending out pleas for money and power via the U.S. Postal Service.

Well, I’m not suggesting Uncle Sam is monitoring my conversations or anything, but since then, I have been flooded with an unprecedented deluge of junk mail from all points of the globe. It has been a truly amazing performance. So, in an effort to tunnel my way out from under this veritable avalanche of not entirely useless information, here are a few things I never would have found out about – or even wondered about – if I hadn’t opened all the junk mail each and every day (that the mail carrier showed up out in front of the Matile Manse): Looking for an intimate chapel to get married in? Try the Monte Casino Chapel at Thomas More College, Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The smallest church in the world, Monte Casino holds just three people at a time. It’s kind of like God’s phone booth.

The U.S. Mail used to be a cheap way to send things. How cheap? Well, the Bank of Vernal in Vernal, Utah, is the only bank in the world sent mail order. The good folks in Vernal discovered in 1919 that it would be cheaper to mail enough bricks to their town to build the bank, seven to a package, than it would have been to have them shipped commercially. Now those were the days.

To the Editor: What a wonderful time my 4-year-old granddaughter and I had at Lyon Farm on Dec. 20. She enjoyed making all the crafts, watching the model trains run and taking the wagon ride through the farm. The 4-H kids and their advisors are to be commended for the way they handled the event. All the instructors were very patient and kind to the children. The building was clean, warm and inviting as well.

I ate my first roasted chestnut. The wagon ride was informative and we are anxious to go back in warmer weather. Thank you to everyone who made the day special.

Worse off thanks to NIU

To the Editor: An article in the Dec. 31 edition of your paper asserts Northern Illinois University “contributes” $900 million to the regional economy.

Let us analyze this using a “black box”: assume that NIU and businesses catering to student needs are in a black box. Into the box goes state, federal and local tax dollars and “property tax exemptions,” and parent tuition. Out of the box come well-compensated faculty and other employees and businessmen, plus educated students who mostly leave DeKalb and even Illinois, to earn money to pay off tuition debts.

Public colleges cost local communities money in the same way local elementary and high schools do. It is the generosity of local and other taxpayers as well as parental sacrifice that permits education beyond high school.

What have you learned?

To the Editor: This is a huge year for America. By the end of this year, we will have weathered the political campaigning and inevitable robo-calls, and hopefully will have found ourselves taking our voting privileges seriously.

Election time is always important but this one holds even more weight as there is so much more at stake as to where we are headed. Will we continue our turn to the left, or will we turn in a more conservative direction? We must ask ourselves what we think of our Constitution. What do we think and believe about our founders in general? What do we think about this country’s birth? Were the newly-granted “rights” a positive or negative thing for those living here? Will we elect leaders who desire to subvert the Constitution or uphold it? Will we be a government of, by and for the people or will these just be by-words? Will we elect another despotic president, or will we elect someone who will restore this country to greatness with strong leadership abilities and a strong sense of government’s true purpose?

We just returned from a vacation in northern Wisconsin where two WWII veterans live. We know them both and know the price they each paid in defending America, its ideals and foundations. It is an honor and privilege to know each of them. The younger of the two fought in the Battle of the Bulge. They are intelligent men and more committed to America than what I see now. Who among our young college grads is willing to fight for our country? Often

I see them making demands and protesting on city streets and wonder if they understand the truth of what makes America great. Do they understand that the past often is a predictor of the future?

Our political correctness and our obsession with human rights for some but not for others has caused us great distraction. We redefine things that are not ours to define in the first place. We stand for tolerance, yet don’t tolerate those of different opinions, and we penalize people in Draconian ways for having the “wrong” opinions. We view the Constitution as just another museum piece for earlier times. If this is where human reason and arrogance has brought us, then I would have none of it.

I don’t believe the lies we have had pushed into our faces and lives. I believe that life, liberty, and the traditional family are worth defending, and I hope others will believe likewise and vote accordingly. I can’t march off to war in the WWII sense, but I can march with my fingers in voicing the truth about where we are headed. In the last seven years, we should certainly have learned our lessons. A malaise feeling overcomes me every election cycle as I watch politician after politician promise free healthcare, free prescriptions, free education and the American people take to the rhetoric as a piranha takes to the scent of blood.

A feeding frenzy ensues in which one politician tries to “out free” the other while the people divide themselves under false principles to justify politicians’ demands. The promise of free goods at the expense of another is nothing more than placing chains and shackles on a fellow American by means of a majority mob rule.

There are those who say that it’s time for a third party, heck, I wish there were two, as members of both parties are guilty of the political ways of the wicked. Every time a politician opens his mouth I’m reminded of Proverbs 6:16-19, “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers” I would warn my Christian brothers and sisters that we, too, are at fault. 2 Corinthians 11:14 reads “No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” We have become lazy hypocrites. It is said “Feed a man fish and you will have fed him for a day, teach him to fish and you will have fed him for a lifetime.” Who are we to yell at our children “I’m not your maid or servant” then turn around and elect politicians to tax the free to death to feed the poor? The Biblical burden to love they neighbor has been placed on our shoulders and to elect someone to do it for us is laziness and the works of a sluggard that invites shame and disgrace and is only worthy of praise from the devil himself. As the primaries and elections approach I warn parents to vote wisely and read about the consequences of your vote in Exodus 20:5.

Can we keep this republic?

To the Editor: When the deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 ended and Benjamin Franklin exited Independence Hall, he was asked by a Mrs. Powel, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” He replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

Now, I’m not a Constitutional expert and I have never read the Federalist Papers, but I have picked up a few things about the start of this country over the years. One of those things was the intent--or, at least, the hope--that the people we elected to run the country would be citizen administrators. That is, they would hold office for a short period of time, pursue their duties with the general interest of the country guiding their efforts, and then return to their former lives.

I believe that Mr. Franklin’s answer was made with the full realization of human nature and what it would take to keep a true representative republic. I think we have failed and, over the last few decades, have begun a downward slide along rails that have been greased by seven years of Obama. We have exchanged the concept of citizen administrators for a ruling class that builds their lives around holding public office. Whatever life they may have had prior to holding office shrinks away as the possibilities for personal advantage blossom before them. We call this kind of lifelong office holder a Politician. Being a successful politician requires a kind of behavior that tends to be described with words like compromise, middle ground, bargain, getting along, working with, and reaching across the isle.

Republicans have won big in recent elections and now have the power to influence the direction of this country. Instead, they follow the established mode of correct ruling class conduct and refuse to rock the boat. We are now at a point where our ruling class feels they have the power to engineer their own glorious vision of the future. That future requires bypassing the fundamental ideas of the Constitution and, in the end, rewriting it. Our ruling class now has a Congress that will not stand against their illegal behavior, and another eight years of Democrat rule will, probably, give them a crack at four seats on a Supreme Court that is already falling into line with them.

There are certain aspects of history that I have studied closely, and I have come to the opinion that the brightest moments were achieved when men and women used their intellect to step above and beyond the limits of human nature. The start of this country was one of those moments, but the end may now be within our reach and Hillary Clinton’s public declaration of her willingness to change or ignore the Bill of Rights scares the hell out of me.

Man surrenders handgun to police SHAW MEDIA A male subject surrendered his handgun to Oswego police early Monday afternoon, ending a three-hour stand-off at a residence in the 5000 block of Fox Sedge Court in the village.

Oswego police said they were summoned to the home at 10:12 a.m. to check on the well-being of an individual. Upon arrival at the home, police encountered a male subject in the garage of his residence armed with a

handgun.

As a precaution, police said they set up a perimeter around the residence and area residents were advised to go to their basements and stay away from doors and windows. Area traffic on nearby Half Round Road was also shut down, police said.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. the situation was safely resolved when the person cooperated with police and relinquished his gun. Oswego police said no one was injured and there were no

other occupants in the home at the time of the incident.

The male subject was transported to a local hospital for examination.

His name and age were not released.

Police said they are still investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed.

Police said they wish to extend thanks to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery Police Department for their assistance in handling the incident.

The Friends of the Yorkville Public Library invite you to play minigolf on Sunday, Jan. 31.

An 18-hole course will wind through both floors of the library. This family-friendly Mini-Golf FUN Raiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (last tee-off at 4). Funds raised will be used to support children’s programs and books.

A fast food restaurant in the 300 block of Douglas Road in Oswego was burglarized Jan. 1, village police reported.

Police said two people stole in excess of $500 from the restaurant.

The burglars were described by police as African-Americans, one ap-

Police said both were wearing dark clothing and left the scene in a dark colored SUV or minivan.

Deputy pulls motorist from retention pond Hailed for breaking window to rescue woman in freezing temps SHAW MEDIA A Kendall County sheriff’s deputy, assisted by Oswego police, rescued a motorist from a vehicle submerged in a retention pond just west of Ill. Route 31 and Washington Street (U.S. Route 34) early New Year’s Day. Here is an account of the incident provided by the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office: “Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Johnson arrived at Stonewater Lane and Washington Street in Oswego at approximately 1:50 a.m. on New Year’s Day for a report of an occupied vehicle in a retention pond at that location.

“As one of the first responders on the scene, Johnson saw the vehicle (which was nearly 100 feet offshore) sinking into the pond, eventually becoming completely submerged.

“With air temperature wind chill readings of minus 1 and water temperatures just above freezing, Deputy Johnson entered the water, swimming to the vehicle in an attempt to rescue the driver and sole occupant. After several at tempts, he Tyler was able to Johnson break out the rear window of the vehicle, and extract the driver from the car.

“With the help of Oswego police officers on the scene, Deputy Johnson was able to bring the driver safely to the shore. Deputy Johnson was treated and released for hypothermia and minor injuries he sustained while breaking out the vehicle window. He is currently doing well and in good spirits. The driver

Johnson rescued was treated, and subsequently arrested by the Oswego Police Department for DUI.” The sheriff’s statement concludes: “We are extremely proud of Deputy Johnson’s selfless courage, and his dedication to the citizens of Kendall County!”

Oswego police identified the motorist rescued from the vehicle as Paula Mason, 50, of the 200 block of West Washington Street, Oswego.

Police said Mason faces charges of driving under the influence and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

She was treated for her injuries and later released from a local hospital. Mason was then arrested on the charges and later released pending a court appearance.

Oswego police reported later that afternoon that the vehicle had been recovered from the pond with the assistance of Aurora Fire Department Dive Team members.

Car drives into Yorkville Rosati’s SHAW MEDIA A car jumped the curb and crashed into the Rosati’s Pizza restaurant in the 1900 block of Marketview Drive at about 10:20 a.m. Dec. 31, Yorkville police said.

According to reports, a juvenile driver was behind the wheel of a Toyota owned

by a driving school. When the juvenile attempted to park the vehicle, the driver pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, police reports said. The car struck the building’s front and partially entered the dining area, reports said.

No injuries were reported to people in the vehicle or the building, police said.

YORKVILLE POLICE REPORTS Possession charges Michael Myland, 21, of the 400 block of Norway Circle, Yorkville, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia at about 3:45 p.m. Dec. 29 after an incident in the 400 block of Norway Circle, Yorkville police said. According to reports, police were called to the address on a report of criminal damage to property.

KENDALL COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORTS Plano, was charged with driving while license suspended at about 9:20 a.m. Jan. 2 at Routes 47 and 126, Yorkville police said.

According to reports, Zizas also was cited for having no front license plate and operating a motor vehicle when registration is suspended for no insurance.

Warrant arrest Devontae J. Totten, 22, of the 900 block of McClaran Avenue, Aurora, was found to be wanted on a warrant on a charge of driving while license suspended at about 9:50 a.m. Jan. 2 at Route 34 and Eldamain Road, Yorkville police said.

Deer collision A deer ran across Fox Road near Pavillion Road at about 6:45 p.m. Dec. 31 and struck the front bumper and driver’s side fender of a car, Yorkville police said. No injuries were reported and the car did not require a tow, reports said.

License violation Jessica Wilson, 22, of the 1300 block of Pearl Street, Montgomery, was charged with driving while license suspended at about 4:05 p.m. Jan. 2 at Route 47 and Big Bend, Yorkville police said.

Criminal damage Someone scratched a windshield on a car sometime between Dec. 30 and Jan. 1 in the 500 block of Birchwood Drive, the owner told Yorkville police. Damage was estimated at $200.

Two-car crash Brenden J. Mauricio, 20, of the 100 block of Riverside Drive, Yorkville, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after a two-car collision at about 4:25 p.m. Jan.

License violation Robert P. Zizas, 50, of the 4000 block of Deames Street,

2 at Route 34 and Countryside Parkway, Yorkville police said.

There were no injuries in the crash, reports said.

Traffic citations Ignacio Gabriel, 51, of Chicago, was charged with having no valid driver’s license, no vehicle insurance and impeding the flow of traffic at about 8:55 p.m. Jan. 2 at Routes 71 and 47, Yorkville police said.

License violation Craig M. Conley, 50, of the 500 block of Cardinal Avenue, Oswego, was charged with driving while license suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle at about 11:45 p.m. Dec. 29 at Route 71 and Pavillion Road, Yorkville police said. According to reports, Conley also was found to be wanted on a warrant.

Possession charge Anna M. Szczepaniak, 22, of Homer Glen, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop at about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 29 at Route 47 and Dickson Road, Yorkville police said.

Gas station robbed at Boulder Hill Pass, Rt. 25 bery at 4:20 a.m.

A clerk told deputies that two masked people entered the business, dressed in all black clothing, and displayed screwdrivers.

The pair left the business with an undetermined amount of money.

No one was hurt in the incident, the sheriff’s office reported.

Seat-belt violation Two people were injured in a one-car crash at about 6:10 a.m.

Dec. 29 on Brisbin Road south of Chicago Road in Seward Township, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. According to reports, a car driven by Angel A. Navarro, 26, of the 1600 block of West Galena Boulevard, Aurora, went out of control after going through standing water and struck a guardrail. Navarro and a passenger, Alexander J. Moreno, 26, of the 200 block of Fernwood Road, Boulder Hill, were both taken to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, reports said.

Navarro and Moreno were both cited for failure to wear a seat belt, reports said.

Theft report A debit card, gift card and cash were taken from a Yorkville man’s wallet between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Dec. 29 at a business in the 3800 block of Eldamain Road, Plano, Kendall County sheriff’s police said. The debit card was later used at two businesses in Plano, reports said. The case is under investigation.

Officers’ rescue efforts save runner from cardiac arrest SHAW MEDIA Patrolling parks as an occupation is diversely challenging but equally rewarding. As a Fox Valley Park District police officer, every day is eventful when your territory involves 165 parks, 48 miles of trails and six community centers.

Their patrol areas are set amid the great outdoors, in beautiful green spaces that evoke public pride and strengthen our sense of community. For officers, however, it’s more than a walk in the park.

Sgt. Lawrence Stefanski and officer Cherese Spears can attest. During a patrol last fall at Phillips Park in Aurora, a peaceful evening was abruptly interrupted when a bystander ran up to them, screaming in distress.

A short distance away, a middle-aged man was lying face down and unconscious in the grass along a trail adjoining Mastodon Lake. Stefanski immediately rolled the man over, shaking him, yelling, rubbing his sternum – anything to get a response.

Stefanski, a 32-year police veteran who served with the Oswego Police Department from 1986 to 2009, realized this was a life or death situation. The man was in full cardiac arrest.

“He wasn’t breathing and had no pulse,” Stefanski recalled, “so I immediately began to administer CPR.” While Stefanski continued resuscitation efforts, Spears, also a former Oswego police officer, retrieved their automated external defibrillator (AED), a portable electronic device that automatically diag-

Every Park District squad car is equipped with an AED. Spears continued CPR after the initial shock, at which point the AED indicated another shock was required.

“We cleared the patient, and after the

second shock, his heart resumed beating,” said Stefanski.

Aurora Fire Department paramedics arrived at that time, and within minutes, the patient was intubated and on his way via ambulance to Rush-Copley Medical Center.

The man, Jesus Delgadillo Jr., 43, is

alive and well. He attended a recent Park District board meeting to express his gratitude for Stefanski and Spears and their efforts that brought a happy ending to a potentially tragic story.

“I’m extremely fortunate these officers were nearby and knew exactly what to do,” said Delgadillo. “I will always be thankful for them.”

Delgadillo is an avid runner who eats well and stays in good shape. In fact, he was on his second run of the day when the incident occurred. Shortly after he was released from the hospital and received medical clearance, he was back walking several miles per day.

“I can’t stand still; I need to be active,” he said.

In time, he hopes to be back running at Phillips Park and other local trails, with one request of Stefanski and Spears. “Can you please make sure you’re there?” he asked with a smile.

This wasn’t the first time Stefanski had been on a scene where mere minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

“You don’t think about it that way,” said Stefanski, “because if your emotions run high, that can open the door to confusion, and that’s the last thing you want in that situation.

“It’s a matter of falling back on your training, processing what needs to be done and executing it calmly. Getting caught up in the emotion of the moment can be a detriment. You do that afterward, when you’ll have time to sort those things out and take a deep breath.”

Student-of-the-Week Danielle Klein Danielle Klein plans to attend Loyola or the University of Wisconsin at Madison to prepare for a career as a nurse practitioner.

A Yorkville High School senior, she is a candidate for the 2016 Student of the Year scholarship award.

A total of 25 YHS seniors, selected by a panel of faculty members and a junior Student Council representative, will be recognized throughout the school year in the Record. Seniors applied for consideration as a Student of the Week through the high school guidance office.

Co-sponsored by First National Bank and the Kendall County Record, the $4,000 Student of the Year scholarship will provide $1,000 each year for four years to the college of the recipient’s choice.

The 2016 Student of the Year will be announced in May. A panel of community leaders will choose the finalists and the winner based on their transcripts, applications and an interview. Nomination and the final selection will be based on scholastic achievement, involvement in school and community, leadership and responsibility, ambition and citizenship. Financial need is not a consideration.

The Yorkville boys basketball team managed to cap 2015 on a positive note on the final day of the Plano Christmas Classic with a 5740 victory over Mendota on Dec. 30.

The Foxes – the No. 10 seed – ended up 2-3 at the tournament and now have an 8-6 overall record entering the second half of the season.

No. 1 seed LaSalle-Peru won the 24-team tournament with the 79-74 triple overtime win over No. 6 Dixon. No. 4 Newark was third after beating No. 2 Burlington Central, 66-58.

“I thought finishing with a win over Mendota [the No. 16 seed] was the best we played all tournament,” Yorkville head coach Mike Dunn said. “We played

with a lot of enthusiasm and passion. We shot better and played with a lot more purpose. The tournament was as talented as it’s ever been.”

The Foxes started tournament play with a win over unseeded Coal City, only to lose the next three against No. 7 Aurora Christian, No. 8 St. Bede and No. 12 Hope (66-58).

“We wanted to do better.

I think we lost some energy after the [Aurora Christian] loss [a 48-44 decision on Dec. 26],” Yorkville senior Dan Kaczmarek said. “We’ll get it back; I know we will.”

Against Mendota, Yorkville led 23-12 after the first quarter and 35-19 at halftime. The Foxes had the 50-27 advantage going into the final frame and were led

by Kaczmarek (13 points), senior Master Davis (13 points) and senior Cameron

Van Boekel (12 points).

Against Hope on Dec. 29, the Eagles led 34-24 at halftime and 42-31 entering the fourth quarter before Yorkville edged them out in scoring in the final frame, 26-25. The Foxes were led by DeAndre Manuel (15 points), both Kaczmarek and Suarez each scored 11 and junior Josh Tatum chipped in 10 points.

“We were missing energy, and I don’t think we were ready to play,” Kaczmarek said. “We just have to come ready to play every game.”

The Foxes are hoping to maintain their above .500 record in the second half of the season, which starts at Sycamore on Friday in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference matchup.

That game will be followed with another league outing against Kaneland at home on Jan. 15.

“We are excited,” Dunn said of the second half of the season. “We’ve struggled with consistency, but we are improving every single time we play.”

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com Jasmine Mitchell, a 6-foot-3 junior center on the Newark girls’ basketball team, experienced the trip of a lifetime when she went on a missions trip to Nepal in late November.

Mitchell’s trip, which was through Global Ventures, was something she had always wanted to do. When the opportunity came about, she signed up, even though it would eventually mean she would miss several basketball games.

Mitchell originally planned to miss just a game or two, but an earthquake in Nepal in April 2015 changed the dates of the trip. “Missing two games, I was still unsure, but it was a missions trip.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and obviously coach was understanding,� Mitchell said. “I completely gave her my support from the beginning,� added Barb Scott, Newark’s first year head coach. “I told her I’ve been on missions trips before and it’s a chance of a lifetime. A lot of people are not able to get that experience, so I told her to go for it.�

Mitchell made the decision to continue with the trip, and played in Newark’s first two games of the season before departing Nov.19.

Mitchell described her time in Nepal in a lot of different ways, but certainly not as a vacation. “There was work involved, and I was exhausted by the end of the 10 days. It was definitely worth it,�

Newark went on a four-game losing streak over the time Mitchell was out of the lineup. She dressed with the team on Nov. 30 against Annawan, but due to jet lag and the time change, she played limited minutes.

The Norsemen had to learn what it was like to play – and win – without Mitchell. “As a team, we missed her a lot, but I was happy for her to get the opportunity,� Newark senior Megan DiClementi said. “The day

she came back, I could just tell how exhausted she was, but I could tell she learned a lot out there and enjoyed it very much.� “We got stronger and we played tough teams [without Mitchell], but we had some battles,� Scott added. “Her whole outlook changed after what she saw and experienced when she came home.�

So did Newark’s record. The Norsemen turned a 2-4 start into a 10-4 record following Mitchell’s return to the lineup. Newark’s win streak ended with a loss to Illiana Christian in the Lisle Holiday Cage Classic. “We lost some games, but we learned a lot,� DiClementi said. “You can tell when one person was gone, and that one person really makes a difference, so we are so glad to have her back.� “[Mitchell is] big presence in the middle and makes such a big difference, but Kelsea [Zitt], Maddie [Friestad] and Megan [DiClementi] really brought it defensively.

That created a lot of havoc against the teams we played,� Scott added. “Add Jasmine’s presence in the middle and they’ve been playing very well off each other, including Morgan Myre as our other post player inside. They’ve really been connecting well together. Jasmine is a huge piece, but the other four starters have been really, really big too.�

Mitchell looks forward to possible future trips, including India. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come home [from Nepal],� Mitchell said, “so I would definitely do it again.�

The Newark girls basketball team got 2016 started on a positive note with the 72-37 victory over LaMoille in Little Ten Conference action at home on Monday.

The Norsemen, who improved to 11-6 overall (4-0 in the conference), closed out 2015 at Lisle’s Holiday Cage Classic with a 62-41 loss to St. Francis and ended up placing fourth of 16 teams.

An undefeated Antioch squad ended up winning the tournament with the 65-56 victory over Illiana Christian on Dec. 30. “It was nice to get a solid conference win over LaMoille,� Newark head coach Barb Scott said. “I continue to be pleased with the effort and attitude that my team demonstrates every game. I told the girls that competition like we faced in Lisle will only help make us stronger as we continue through our season.�

Newark started the Holiday Cage Classic with a 4738 victory over Lisle, a win by forfeit against Hampshire and a 55-37 loss to Illiana Christian.

The Norsemen resume conference action this week against Paw Paw at home before heading to Aurora Christian for a non-conference contest on Tuesday.

Scott said Newark’s list of accomplishments for 2016 are simple. “Our immediate goals are to continue to improve as a team and compete for the Little Ten Conference championship,� Scott said.

Newark makes lasting impression Team turns 29-8 deficit into 66-58 win over Rockets

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@kendallcountynow.com Finishing in third place at the Plano Christmas Classic wasn’t exactly the plan for the Newark boys’ basketball team, but the Norsemen still managed to make a lasting impression at the 24team tournament.

Newark, the No. 4 seed, started the tournament with a 34-point win over Streator, extended the winning streak to 11 with a come-from-behind win over No. 5 Kaneland, but fell to No. 1 LaSalle-Peru, 62-56, in a hard-fought battle on Dec. 29.

The Norsemen, however, bounced back in the third-place game against No. 2 Burlington Central, 66-58, on Dec. 30, in another exciting come-from-behind win.

The Norsemen capped 2015 with a 12-2 overall record, as the Clausel brothers, Jack and Will, made the All-Tournament team. This was Jack’s third time on the 18-player list.

“Obviously, I wish we were playing [for first place], but being a small [Class] 1A school, third place is something to be proud of,” said Newark senior Evan Schomer, who scored 15 points.

“We love this tournament – we hate to see it end,” Newark head coach Rick Tollefson added. “It’s just great. It wouldn’t be Christmas without it.”

Against Burlington Central, Newark found itself trailing by as much as 29-8 with 3:15 left in the first half after the Rockets led 13-6 after the first quarter.

The Norsemen, however, ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run and reduced the lead to 33-23 at halftime.

In the third, Newark went on a 14-0 run and took the lead back for the first time since the middle of the first quarter.

Newark outscored Burlington Central 21-12 in the third quarter, but the Rockets still led 45-44 entering the fourth quarter after four straight points in the final 35 seconds.

The Norsemen led the entire fourth quarter after points from Schomer and Will Clausel (14 points) opened the final frame’s scoring. The Rockets were able to reduce the lead to 50-49 with 5:37 on the clock, but Newark then proceeded with an 11-0 run, led by four different players.

With 2:47 left in the game, Newark led 60-49 after Will Clausel sank a pair of free throws.

Freshmen get the job done Foxes pick up win over L-W Central

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@kendallcountynow.com Although it was Senior Night for 10 Yorkville wrestlers on Tuesday, it was the freshmen who got the job done on the mat.

Yorkville trailed visiting Lincoln-Way Central 31-30 entering the final bout between freshman Brady Fisher and the Knights’ Brett Kirkland. Fisher jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead and finished with a 13-3 win by major decision to help the Foxes to a 34-31 dual victory.

“It’s his first match back and we want to make sure he’s ready to wrestle tonight, and clearly he

was,” Yorkville head coach Joe Fornell said of Fisher. “We had four freshmen win tonight, so that’s awesome. The guys wrestling up had big wins for us.”

Fisher had been out of the lineup for the past month with an injury, but was one of three starters who returned Tuesday night to strengthen Yorkville’s roster in the 2016 opener. Senior Joey Nauman came back from a knee injury that kept him off the mat since late November while junior Hunter Vester made his season debut after breaking his wrist prior to the start of the year.

Nauman was the first to step into the circle against the Knights at 170 pounds and turned an early 4-0 lead into an eventual 11-1 major decision. Senior Bryce Shewan ended his match in the second period with a tech fall win

(4:11), and the Knights forfeited at 195 to give Yorkville an early 15-0 lead.

“I’m getting there. I still feel like I have more in the tank,” Shewan said. “I’m still working on my conditioning, and we’ll see where that takes me.”

Freshman Joe Bass made quick work of his 106-pound opponent, winning by pin in 1:59 after getting the call just before the horn. But L-W Central went on to win the next four, including a pair of falls at 113 and 120 to take a 28-21 lead over Yorkville.

Senior Alex Warren had a quick pin at 138, but the Knights won by decision at 145 for a 31-27 lead. Freshman Wyatt Murphy rode out a 1-0 decision at 152 to keep the Foxes in the hunt leading into Fisher’s final bout.

Whenever a big snow does arrive this winter, area sledders of all ages will likely head to the garage to find their faithful sleds, saucers, inner tubes, snowboards and even their grandpa’s old toboggan. Then they’ll have to decide where to go.

Fortunately there are numerous locations in and around Kendall County for sledders of all ages to get their speed on.

Here’s a look at some of the more popular public places for sledding: • Harris Forest Preserve, Route 71 just west of Route 47 near Yorkville.

Perhaps the best place to sled in Kendall County. The steep hill at Harris provides sledders with a fast and fun downward ride while the view of the surrounding countryside from atop the hill is especially picturesque on clear, cold winter days. Stairs built

into the hill help ease the strain of the climb back up – somewhat.

Ample parking and a picnic shelter are located near the foot of the hill.

The Kendall County Forest Preserve District owns and maintains Harris.

• Silver Springs State Park, Fox Road just south of Plano. Sledding has been a popular winter activity at Silver Springs for decades. A hill is located inside the park’s east entrance off Fox Road. The 1,350-acre park is owned and operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

• Jaycee Pond, Center Street, Yorkville. Generations of Yorkville residents have enjoyed sledding on this hill located along the south side of Center Street, not far from Yorkville High School. A small pond is located close to the bottom of the hill so sledders are advised to be prepared to brake or turn left. The pond is owned and operated by the city’s Park and Rec Department.

• Prairie Point Community Park, Plainfield Road in Oswego. This

manmade hill offers a short fast ride for more accomplished sledders and an easier slope for the younger-set.

Plenty of parking and a picnic shelter adjoin the hill in this Oswegoland Park District facility.

• Chesterfield Park and Lake, Chesterfield Drive, Oswego. This Oswegoland Park District park adjoins the Waubonsie Trail and includes a small sledding hill.

• Community Park at Grande Park, South Ridge Road, Plainfield. The largest park in the Oswegoland Park District’s system of parks includes a sledding hill.

For those sledders venturing outside Kendall County, we recommend: • Oakhurst Forest Preserve, Aurora. The forest preserve located off Fifth Avenue just west of Kautz Road on Aurora’s east side features the steepest sledding hill this side of Harris Woods in Yorkville. Like at Harris, it’s a steep climb up the hill at Oakhurst, but worth it for any sledder looking to thrill to a fast

downhill descent. Also like Harris, the hill offers a nice view of the surrounding area, including the heavily wooded forest preserve and the Fox Valley Mall and Rush-Copley Medical Center.

• Waubonsie Lake Park, Aurora.

Close to the Oswego-Montgomery area on Montgomery and Kautz roads, this hill is not quite as steep as the ones in Oakhurst Forest Preserve and Harris, but still offers a quick ride down. The Fox Valley Park District, which owns and maintains the park, rates the hill as “intermediate.”

• Johnson’s Mound Forest Preserve, west of Route 47 on Hughes Road near Elburn. It would figure the highest natural point in Kane County – elevation approximately 200 feet – would have a most excellent sledding hill. Alfred C. Augsburg, age 80, of Hinckley, IL, passed away on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Season’s Hospice in Naperville, IL. He was born on January 24, 1935 in Aurora, IL, the son of Alfred and Josephine (Feyereisen) Augsburg.

Alfred was united in marriage on September 25, 1954 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Aurora, IL to the former Miss Jean Brummel and they spent the next 61 happy years of their lives together.

He was employed for thirty years by Caterpillar Inc in Montgomery, IL and was an active member of UAW Local #145 in Aurora, IL. He also farmed in the Hinckley area for many years.

Alfred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Augsburg of Hinckley, IL; his six children, Debra Augsburg of Sheridan, IL, Carol Tellez of Lamar, CO, Jeanine Augsburg of El Paso, TX, Judy (Lou) Leifheit of Big Rock, IL, Barbara (David) Tellez of Oswego, IL, and James (Donna) Augsburg of Oswego, IL; his ten grandchildren; his nine great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Ruth Ann Strope of Ottawa, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Josephine Augsburg; and his brother-inlaw, James Strope.

Born: May 20, 1956 Died: Dec. 30, 2015 Joel P. “Joe” Beck, 59, of Sandwich passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. He was born May 20, 1956, in Aurora, IL, the son of William P. and Ruth A. (Holt) Beck.

Joe married Janet Zimmer on November 10, 1984 in Las Vegas, NV, and spent 31 wonderful years together. He was a member of Harvest Chapel Church in Sandwich, IL and Faith Assembly of God in Peru, IL. Joe worked at Designed Stairs for over 20 years and was a very talented wood worker. He enjoyed boating on the Illinois River with his wife, Janet, and his furry companion, Greta. Joe impacted many lives and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

Joe is survived by his wife, Janet of Sandwich, IL; one son, Aaron (Teresa) Calhoon of Seneca, IL and their children, Logan and Brandon; one daughter, Lynn (Kenny) Carr of San Diego, CA and their child, McKenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at Harvest Chapel Church in Sandwich. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016, at the church in Sandwich.

Bernell Pierce, age 98, of Amboy and formerly of Oswego passed away December 30, 2015.

He was born on July 17, 1917, in Lovilla, Iowa. He moved to Vermillion, South Dakota as a child and then relocated to Yorkville, IL in 1936. Bernell was an Army veteran of WW II having served 4 1/2 years under General Patton, in Germany. Bernell was united in marriage to Bessie Brettelle, March 2, 1946, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aurora, IL. She preceded him in death April 27, 2015. Bernell and Bessie farmed in the Oswego area for 41 years. He retired in 1989. He enjoyed traveling to see the country and his relatives.

He is survived by two sons, John (Linda) Pierce of Granbury, TX, and Kenneth (Chris) Pierce of Amboy; 5 grandchildren, Daniel (Kristen) Pierce of Carol Stream, Kristen (Brian) Sharp of Madison WI, Michael (Amy) Pierce of Genoa, Angela (Justin) Tubbs of Plainfield, Ryan (Chris) Pierce of Newark; eight great grandchildren; sisters, Laura Panikis of Yorkville and Wilma Patula of Oswego; brother, Oliver Pierce of Oswego; and sister in law, Esther Pierce of Yorkville.

DARLENE MAE (FREDERICK) TERANDO

Born: May 3, 1937 Died: Dec. 27, 2015

Darlene Mae (Frederick) Terando, 78, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at her home surrounded by the love of her two daughters, Terri and Tammy.

She was born on May 3, 1937 in Peru, IL, daughter of Theodore and Esther (Miller) Frederick.

She grew up on a farm where she learned how to sew and how to milk cows.

Darlene graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School, and for a time, worked at Westclox Manufacturing.

She met the love of her life, Leonard Terando, at a roller rink. They were married in 1959 and soon moved to Boulder Hill, where they began to raise their 5 children. Darlene continued to live in their Boulder Hill home for the remainder of her lifetime.

Darlene and Lenny enjoyed a full life, raising their children and spending time with family and friends. Sadly, Lenny passed away in 1978, and Darlene was left to raise 5 teenagers on her own. Despite her loss, Darlene still found great joy in life, and when her first grandchild was born, Darlene began what she described as the most amazing experience of her entire lifetime.

She became a full time caretaker of her grandchildren while her daughters worked.

Darlene eventually found companionship again with Richard Pendzinski, who became her partner for the next 25 years.

Darlene spent her days enjoying her grandchildren and then enjoyed socializing with friends and family on the weekends. She also never missed her monthly appointment at the hair salon.

Darlene never met a stranger

She is also survived by her adored grandchildren: Megan, Jason, and Lauren Allen, Stan IV, Jake, Jarred, and Sydney Woodworth and Teagan and Tatum Terando. Two brothers also survive: Roger (Kathy) Frederick and Ron (Diane) Frederick as well as a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband Lenny, Darlene was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Hoskins.

RONALD J. WRIGHT Ronald J. Wright, 74, formerly of Sandwich Illinois died peacefully on December 22, 2015, in Homosassa Florida.

He is a graduate of Sandwich High School and served 8 years in the Air Force and also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Ron is survived by his twin sister, Barbara (Wright) Scheidecker, Vicki Wright, Bob Wright, Jim Wright, Linda Vincent, Aprill Vincent; and sister-in-law, Lagene Wright; also several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Rhoda Goebel Wright; parents, William J. and Helene Wright, Betty Vincent Wright; and brother, William R Wright.

Dr. Kelly Lally and Jeffrey Mitchell were inducted to membership at the club’s last regular meeting of 2015.

Dr. Lally is a chiropractor who works for the Chiropractic Place in Oswego.

Mitchell works for Thrivent Services, a not-for-profit offering financial services.

Shoger/Schoger family gathers for 2015 reunion SHAW MEDIA The Shoger/Schoger family reunion was held July 11 at the Harris Forest Preserve in Yorkville. The family celebrated 161 years in America since Andrew, Fredrick and William immigrated in 1854 from Marklustenau, Germany. Thirty-two descendants of Georg Michael Schoger (17601842), children and grandchildren,

came to the Plainfield/Oswego area even though he did not come himself.

Marilyn Shoger and Lynn Shoger have organized the reunion for several years. Alice Mawdsley, Stan Shoger and Bonnie Shoger organized the group photo. After the photo, a potluck lunch was served. Members of the family related what they had been doing the past few years.

The 2017 reunion is being planned.

According to reports, Garcia knowingly provided a false name and address to a police officer who had detained him. Bond was set at $1,500 and a Jan. 6 court date was scheduled.

• Devin T. Morgan, 19, of the 400 block of Fawn Drive, Oswego, entered a guilty plea on Oct. 13 to charges of unlawful possession of alcohol, unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia,

according to Kendall County Court documents.

Morgan was accused of having three glass pipes in his possession for the purpose of inhaling cannabis in connection with an incident Sept. 27 in the 100 block of Chesterfield Drive in Oswego, court records said.

Morgan was sentenced to 12 months of court supervision, and ordered to pay court costs, submit to an evaluation for alcohol/drugs and perform 40 hours of public service, court documents said.

• Ty D. Counsil, 28, of the 300 block of West Rock Street, Plano, was charged with obstructing a peace officer in connection with

an incident Sept. 26 at Bill and Jones streets in Plano, Kendall County Court documents said. According to reports, Counsil was a passenger in a car when he became verbally combative and exited the vehicle to confront an officer. Counsil refused commands to get back into the car and had to be detained in the middle of the road, records said. Bond was set at $1,500 and a Jan. 7 court date was scheduled.

• Jacob M. Neal, 22, of the 400 block of North Main Street, Earlville, was charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with an incident Sept. 27 in the 14000 block of Fox

Road in Plano, Kendall County Court documents said.

According to reports, Neal is accused of possessing cannabis and a steel pipe used for inhaling cannabis. Bond was set at $1,500 and a Jan. 5 court date was scheduled.

• Thaddeus A. Jones, 19, of the 600 block of North May Street, Aurora, was charged with retail theft in connection with an incident Sept. 26 in Oswego, Kendall County Court documents said. According to reports, Jones is accused of taking merchandise from a business in the 2700 block of Route 34, Oswego. A warrant has been issued in the case, reports said.

Former landfill offers panoramic view • SLEDDING

• Roy C. Blackwell Forest Preserve, Route 56 (Butterfield Road) in Warrenville.

This former landfill features Mt. Hoy, a massive, manmade hill which tops off at 836 feet above sea

level. The DuPage County Forest Preserve District limits sledding on the hill to inner tubes, which can be rented on weekends and school holidays December through February when three inches or more of snow cover the hill. Tube rentals are offered at the base of the hill.

In addition to a fast ride down, the hill offers tubers a panoramic view of the western suburbs.

SHAW MEDIA Take Charge of Your Health, Live Well, Be Well is a new class on managing health issues being offered in 2016 at the Senior Services Associates Yorkville office to help seniors and those with chronic illnesses start the New Year off just right.

The evidence-based sixweek course will be offered at Senior Services Associates, 908 Game Farm Road in Yorkville, from Jan. 29 through March 4. Classes will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. each Friday in the Austin Room at the Beecher Community Center. Class materials are available to participants free of charge through the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging.

This small group course is limited to the first 15 registrants. It is a chance to learn new techniques

Local 4-H’ers kick off 2016 beef gain contest SHAW MEDIA On the icy, cold morning of Jan. 2, Kendall County 4-H youth kicked off the new year by traveling with their beef steers to officially weigh in for the 2016 Rate of Gain Contest sponsored by the Kendall Grundy Beef Association.

Entering its 26th year, the contest’s initial weigh-in took place Saturday morning at David Wheeler Farm in Yorkville.

Participants include: Ryan Bateman, 18, of Yorkville; Jacob Benson, 15, of Newark; Dakota Bregar, 15, of Grand Ridge; Cole Wheeler, 10, of Yorkville; and Molly Wheeler, 9, of Yorkville. All chose black crossbred steers, which varied from 495 to 719 pounds.

“Each 4-H member had a unique story about choosing a steer, and for the next six months, they will work hard to properly care for and feed the animals, with the goal of greatest gain,” said Kim Eisnaugle, 4-H Program coordinator for Kendall County.

“In July, the steers will be weighed again and a winner will be determined. The youth

also will show the animals at the Kendall County Fair and 4-H Show in August.”

The beef association has a $600 budget for awards for the youth participating this year, and Bregar Farms provides an extra incentive for youth who complete all parts of the event. This includes both January and July weigh-ins, completed record books with daily feed rations, and an interview. The remaining requirements are due July 19, which is 200 days from the start of the contest. Then, a judge also will do a live animal evaluation.

4-H offers positive youth development programs that provide the opportunity for youth to feel a sense of belonging, develop independence, practice generosity, and experience mastery. Led by a qualified volunteer, this six-week program will explore basic coding principles in a small group setting.

“Open to youth ages 8 to 14, this SPIN club allows members to discover computer coding fundamentals through a fun, handson experience,” said Jo Ann Britton, a 4-H Program coordinator with University of Illinois Extension in Kendall County. “This program provides youth ownership of the project in all its stages, and the process promotes technology, communication and

organizational skills.”

The Computer Coding SPIN Club will meet on Thursdays from Feb. 5 through March 10 at the Yorkville Public Library.

Cost is $20 per youth, which covers the annual 4-H program fee. Current 4-H members are free with previously paid 2015-16 4-H program fee.

First session registration is now open through Jan. 22, or when the class meets capacity. Space is limited, but an additional session may be added with enough interest.

The village of Oswego will partner with the Oswego Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Jan. 14, to host a free viewing of the “INK 180” documentary which recently won Best Documentary, Best Directing and Best Editing awards from the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Ryan Anderson will be featured on the Jan. 10 episode of Sportsman Channel’s “Brotherhood Outdoors” TV series. A passion for sportsmanship and education is led Anderson to branch out in his community to volunteer and work to make a difference.

SHAW MEDIA The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s “Brotherhood Outdoors” TV series will feature Ryan Anderson, a union painter with District Council 30/Local 448 from Montgomery, guiding the show’s hosts on an Illinois waterfowl hunt at 10 a.m.

Central time on Jan. 10 on the Sportsman Channel.

A staple in Sportsman Channel’s “Red, Wild & Blue” programming, “Brotherhood Outdoors” puts American workers in the spotlight as co-hosts Daniel Lee Martin and Julie McQueen take viewers to the homes, communities and job sites of hardworking men and women and into the wild for heart-pounding, gut-wrenching, unforgettable hunting and fishing adventures across North America.

Anderson is known in his community as a giver and a contributor. He helped establish the 3.1-mile, 20-obstacle Heroes Mud Run that benefits military veterans and encourages youth to be active outdoors. Anderson also sits on the board of directors for the Illinois Conservation Foundation, the Spectrios Institute for Low Vision and the Marmion Alumni Association.

His dedication to his community is one of the things that immediately stood out when he applied to be a guest on the show.

“The first thing I thought when I saw Ryan Anderson’s application come in to be on an episode of ‘Brotherhood Outdoors’ was, ‘Wow! This guy does a lot for his community!’” said McQueen.

In May of 2015, co-hosts McQueen and Martin met Anderson in Aurora, for the Heroes Mud Run. After a great time and positive experience, Anderson invited the “Brotherhood Outdoors” team to join him and his friends for two days of fellowship, fun and duck hunting on the mighty Mississippi River.

Throughout his childhood, Anderson spent time hunting rabbits and pheasants on northern Illinois farmland with his dad and brothers, and hunting remains an integral part of his family life today.

Waterfowl and upland bird hunting are favorites of Anderson, and he meticulously prepares for each season months in advance, making sure to include friends and family along the way.

“I most enjoy hunting while spending time with my son, daughter, family and friends,” said Anderson. “It’s also very important to me that we spend time edu-

cating youth on the safe practices of the sport and introducing youth to the wonder of the great outdoors.”

This passion for sportsmanship and education is what led Anderson to branch out in his community to volunteer and make a difference in any way he can.

After meeting him in person, competing in the Heroes Mud Run and seeing the mutual respect and passion he shares with his community, Martin and McQueen agreed that Anderson was a deserving, qualified candidate to appear on “Brotherhood Outdoors.”

While the show’s hosts typically take guests on guided hunting and fishing trips, Anderson turned the tables and included Martin and McQueen in his annual opening weekend duck hunting and camping trip with his close friends at Illinois’ Blanding Landing Recreation Area on the banks of the Mississippi.

Optimist Club sponsors student essay contest

The Optimist Club of Oswegoland is encouraging area students to contemplate the phrase “Lead by Example: Reality or Fiction” as part of the Optimist International Essay Contest for 2016.

The guidelines require that contestants be younger than age 18 as of Oct. 1, 2015, and have not yet graduated high

school or the equivalent.

This contest is open to all area students. You do not have to live in Oswego.

Winners will win a cash prize and a medallion.

The first place winner will advance to the District contest to compete for a $2,500 college scholarship.

The Essay Contest is sponsored by the Oswegoland Optimist Club to give young people the opportunity to write about their own opinions regarding the world in which they live. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective.

Community Foundation offering scholarships

The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley’s 2016 scholarship program offers scholarships to students who will attend an accredited institution of higher education on a full-time basis during the 2016-17 academic year.

Eligibility is limited to residents of the Community Foundation’s service area, which includes Kendall County along with the city of Aurora and southern Kane County. The majority of Community Foundation scholarships are based on academic ability and financial need.

A few scholarships do not consider financial need and are based on academic ability or academic excellence.

Scholarship application forms are available through Feb. 1 and may be obtained online at http://go.cffrv.org/ scholarship2016. The deadline date for receipt of application materials is Monday, Feb. 1.

Last week, in the middle of Monday’s ice storm, some of Trinity’s children and their families traveled to the packing facility in Aurora for Feed My Starving Children and gave time to help children worldwide. Feed My Starving Children is a nonprofit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. These meals are shipped to distribution partners. FMSC meals have reached nearly 70 countries around the world. Trinity Church United Methodist teaches children to help others. Repurpose your Christmas tree Just about now, you can see holiday trees sitting in the front or side yard, waiting for the assigned pickup date to be collected and mulched.

This is one way to be sure your holiday tree gets recycled to the benefit of the environment.

If your tree is composted in a community program, make sure you take advantage of the composted material later by bringing some back home and using it in your landscape beds.

Those fallen needles that need to be collected as you take the tree outdoors can go to the compost pile.

If your community does not recycle holiday trees, consider contacting wildlife organizations to see if they can benefit from using your tree.

They may, for example, be used to provide habitat for fish. Sharing this information annually is a great reminder of how easily you can help the environment.

There also are ways to continue to benefit from your tree right in your own yard. If you are feeding the birds, set your tree up nearby to give birds a place to sit while they take turns going to the feeder. This gives us more to watch and saves the birds

That tree also provides shelter from stormy weather. If you already have some evergreens in the landscape, you already have witnessed this survival technique. If you have an artificial tree, there likely is a neighbor that has a live tree that you can get ahold of.

For any tree, you can buy or make your own suet balls to hang in the tree as another source of food and energy for the birds. You will begin to attract the larger birds that really enjoy suet and provide more entertainment. Other sources of food and a great family activity will be to pop some popcorn, buy a bag of cranberries and string them together to hang on the tree. Clear out the crisper drawer in the refrigerator and put out apple or orange slices that are too

far gone for us to eat.

If your winter activities don’t include the birds, you can use the tree in the home landscape.

By using the evergreen branches cut from the trunk to cover tender perennials, you will be providing winter protection and hiding them from the rabbits early next spring when there is little else to eat. Any branches covering the perennials also will collect additional blowing leaves for protection. The soil will remain colder too, delaying early spring growth that could be caught by that late spring frost.

Save the trunk for the 2016 garden season and plan on using it to support peas or beans, or for growing morning glories in the garden. By the end of the garden season, the trunk can be burnt in the outdoor fire pit.

Act boosts conservation incentives Expands eligibility for creating land easements; local group pushed for law Landowners and the environment will benefit from a federal tax incentive supporting land conservation passed by the U. S. Congress in December 2015 and now signed into law.

The incentive is part of the America Gives More Act, a package of tax incentives to encourage charitable giving. The law significantly expands the number of private landowners who can fully utilize the tax incentives for permanently protecting important natural, scenic and historic resources. The new law is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2015.

The Conservation Foundation, a Naperville-based nonprofit focused on protecting land and watersheds, strongly supported passage of the measure as a member of the Land Trust Alliance that led the campaign for permanence.

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, and Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., co-sponsored the original conservation easement bill and both voted in favor of the America Gives More Act, which contained the conservation easement incentive, along with Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. U.S. Reps. Tammy Duckworth, D-Hoffman Estates, Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, and Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, are among

legislators in The Conservation Foundation’s service territory who also supported this bipartisan bill.

“This tax incentive promotes private land conservation, which benefits the public in Rep. Randy many ways, Hultgren including enR-Plano suring cleaner water and cleaner air for the future,” Conservation Foundation President/ CEO Brook McDonald said.

“Congress heard voters who continually approve local bond referenda for open space preservation.”

McDonald said since local government can’t afford to purchase all that is needed, this bill provides private landowners a financial benefit for the public good when giving up development rights in perpetuity through a conservation easement.

Land Trust Alliance

President Rand Wentworth said this is the single greatest legislative action in decades to support land conservation.

“It states, unequivocally, that we as a nation treasure our lands and must conserve their many benefits for future generations,” Wentworth said.

The conservation incentive first was enacted as a temporary provision in 2006 and is directly responsible for conserving more than two million acres of America’s natural outdoor heritage. The incentive grants certain tax benefits to landowners who sign a conservation easement.

These private, voluntary agreements with local conservation land trusts such as The Conservation Foundation permanently limit uses of the land to protect its conservation values.

Lands placed in the conservation easements can continue to be farmed, hunted or used for other specific purposes.

In addition to the conservation easement incentives, the agreement additionally encourages donations to food banks and reinstates the IRA Charitable Rollover, allowing donors age 70 and a half and older to contribute up to $100,000 annually to charity tax free. Married donors can contribute as much as $200,000.

The Conservation Foundation is one of the region’s oldest and largest not-forprofit land and watershed conservation organizations. Since it was founded in 1972, TCF has helped preserve nearly 33,000 acres of open space, restored and cleaned miles of rivers and streams, and educated thousands of children by engaging them in nature and the outdoors.

Seeing bald eagles in our own backyard – what an amazing sight.

Bald eagles have made a remarkable recovery nationwide. Illinois in particular has seen dramatic increases in the eagle population in recent years, including in Kendall County and surrounding areas.

Eagles and their amazing story will be the focus of an upcoming program, Bald Eagles: A Conservation Victory, to be held at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the Little White School Museum, 72 Polk St. in Oswego.

The program is being jointly sponsored by the Oswegoland Heritage Association, The Conservation Foundation and Oswegoland Park District.

Advance reservations are encouraged to attend the program. To register, or for other information, phone 630-554-1010. There is a $5 registration fee.

The presentation will discuss why eagles became endangered in the first place, how the conservation community was able to achieve such a dramatic recovery, and what factors threaten the continued growth of eagle populations. There also will be discussion on legal aspects of protecting the birds, such as obtaining permits for potential work in the areas they live.

Drew Becker, fish and wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Rock Island Field Office, will be the speaker. He serves as the eagle biologist for Illinois, Iowa and Missouri, and his duties include providing technical assistance

Many homeowners also enjoy seeing the other more common birds and wildlife in their backyards. There is even a National Squirrel Appreciation Day observed this month every year on Jan. 21. Some people enjoy watching these as backyard “buddies” and others look at them as a nemesis around the bird feeder.

But, either way, it is a good reminder that there can be fun and benefit to feeding and protecting wildlife in our backyards.

One exception to remember if feeding wildlife is that since 2002, it has been illegal to feed deer in Illinois due the possible spread of disease.

Peasant dishes use wholesome ingredients

efore cornmeal starred in polenta and rice became risotto, cornmeal was fried up as cornmeal mush and rice was eaten in beans and rice. These were peasant dishes at their best – based on local, inexpensive ingredients available to all. These foods weren’t gussied up with fancy sauces or garnishes; instead they were meals that conserved (and recycled) and made do with little. Peasant dishes, with their earthy, honest ingredients, now star in hip restaurants across the country, a testament to their lure and durability.

Here’s a dish born out of a lean pantry. It’s perfect for adapting to what you have on hand and improvising at length.

Braised Chicken and Vegetables Serves 4

n 1 tablespoon olive oil n 6 bone-in chicken thighs n 1 potato, peeled and chopped n 1 yellow onion, finely chopped (1 cup) n 2 carrots, chopped n 2 garlic cloves, minced n ¾ cup white wine such as Chardonnay n 1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth n 3 sprigs fresh thyme n 1 tomato, chopped n Juice of 1 lemon n ½ teaspoon salt n Freshly ground pepper n Lemon slices (optional, for garnish) Heat oil in a large, heavy skillet over medium. Add chicken and cook until brown on both sides, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from pan. Add potato, onion and carrots; cook 5 minutes. Return chicken to skillet (with any juices). Add garlic, wine, broth, thyme, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Cover and simmer 15 to 20 minutes. Add chopped tomato, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

BRIEFS Waubonsee seeks tutors to support adult literacy

The Adult Literacy Project at Waubonsee Community College is seeking volunteers to tutor adult students in reading, writing and speaking English.

The Adult Literacy Project will offer a tutor training from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Waubonsee’s Aurora Campus, 18 S. River St. Additional online, self-paced readings also are required. All training and materials will be provided at no charge.

Participants must register for the training by Jan. 18.

Volunteers tutor once a week for one hour. Morning, afternoon and evening opportunities are available. Tutor applications are available online at waubonsee. edu/adultliteracy and also can be obtained by calling 630-8017900, ext. 4221.

Upcoming events at Chapel on the Green

The Chapel on the Green Historical Society has several events planned for early 2016.

Howard Manthei will present an accordion program, “The Lawrence Welk Era,” focusing on the history of band leader Lawrence Welk at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 16.

“Golden Days of Hollywood” will be presented by Martina Cassidy at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7. She will portray gossip columnist Luella Parsons, Hollywood’s most dynamic and powerful gossip columnist and the first American movie columnist.

The scintillating stories and scandals of the actors, actresses and studio moguls in Hollywood’s Golden Age is the topic for this captivating and fascinating presentation.

On Sunday, April 10, “Here Comes the Bride” will be presented by the Decades of Dresses ladies, featuring wedding dresses from the 1900s to the 1960s. Reservations for this program will be taken.
