I was a junior bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding. I wore a long dress and got to sit at the head table, toasting the happy couple’s marriage with sparkling juice.

Then, just last fall, I again stood in a bridal party. This time, the magic of weddings seemed even more apparent. While the bride and groom were rightfully the centers of attention, it was wonderful to see couples of all ages celebrating love for each other, too. As a bridesmaid, I had been clued in as to the amount of detail-oriented planning that the wedding required, but standing there during the ceremony, it was abundantly clear that the moments we’d remember would be all about the evening itself.

What memories do you hold from weddings? Maybe after you finish reading this, you’ll pull out your own wedding

album, or reminisce with your spouse about weddings you’ve attended together.

Or maybe you’ll look at the save-the-date hanging on your fridge and resolve to RSVP “yes!”

Our love and weddings issue features everything from amazing, brag-worthy bouquets for Valentine’s Day (P. 8) to a preview of the revamped Geneva Bridal Stroll (P. 14). If you’re not feeling very romantic this year, we have plenty of other stories for you — I found the feature on Kane County’s local “baby whisperer” (P. 34) to be very informative and interesting.

Local florists’ tips on choosing a Valentine’s Day bouquet worth bragging about

uscious red roses — they’re one of those telltale signs that the holiday of amour is upon us. But, while roses may never leave their coveted spot as the top blossom for Valentine’s Day, florists throughout the area agree that outside-the-box arrangements are seeing increasing popularity. And for good reason, as there’s hardly anything more romantic than an elegant and ethereal bouquet (or a sustainable one!) for an adored recipient.

Here florists share the industry trends they’re seeing as well as insights for placing orders this Valentine’s Day. As with declarations of love, it’s best not to wait.

 PARAGON FLOWERS This year’s Valentine’s Day will mark the 10th for the St. Charles-based business, and more than 40 in the industry for owner Michael John. John prides himself on Paragon’s customer service and thinks of the shop’s staff as family.

When it comes to less traditional arrangements, he has more than a few suggestions.

“We are doing more and more mixed arrangements that still say love, but we are using giant Oriental lilies, which have a beautiful fragrance,” he says.

Other flowers to check out include the feathery Pink Mink protea, the delicately speckled purple vanda orchid and the striking calla lily. Or for something truly distinctive, John recommends the hanging heliconia, a plant that draws comparisons to a lobster claw.

If it has to be roses, however, John finds pink Geraldine roses to be a popular pick. They’re even a personal favorite of the florist himself.

 FARMDOG FLOWERS With an organic micro flower farm located outside St. Charles, Farmdog Flowers knows its petals inside and out.

“During the warmer growing season here, we grow a significant amount of cut flowers and foliage that we use in our retail arrangements, weddings and special events,” says farmer, florist and proprietor Gerrit Husar.

Farmdog Flowers specializes in the style of a European garden, which translates to fresh blossoms arranged loosely with an emphasis on textures, hues and composition.

Ordering well before the holiday is key, the expert notes, as is flexibility in making selections due to shortages.

“Our pre-order arrangements will be a mix of blooms that may include the garden roses you would expect on Valentine’s Day, but will also feature other exotic blooms and greenery that are sure to impress,” says Husar, who is

planning to open a brick-and-mortar location in Batavia early this spring.  WILD ORCHID CUSTOM FLORAL DESIGN Located in Elburn, this family-owned and -operated shop is in the business of bringing its patrons’ visions to life.

“We want to be accessible in talking with our customers when they have questions or helping them decide on flower choices,” says Marie Pauly, owner and floral designer.

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, Pauly acknowledges that red and pink flowers are always a solid pick, but to also consider something more unexpected. She sees a move toward more earthy colors and natural elements.

But, whatever the choice, early ordering is always on trend.

“Pre-booking your Valentine’s flowers ahead of time is the best way to help ensure you get what you really want,” she says.

A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE Looking for something long-term? When it comes to floral arrangements, those of the wooden variety may be just the thing.

Derived from a marshy plant, the pliable sola wood proves itself an uncanny facsimile. Bouquets of these unique faux flowers are an eco-friendly way to brighten someone’s day.

Nona Kaushal, owner of Wood Blossom Creations in Aurora, sells her handcrafted pieces via her Facebook page as well as at the Painted Tree boutique in Naperville. She asks for a minimum of two weeks’ notice for Valentine’s Day orders.

“The beauty of these flowers is that they can be dyed to match any color palette and customized to fit any aesthetic,” Kaushal says. “My customers like the fact that they can display their arrangements all year-round.”

ason Stoffels loves to prepare his signature meals for his clients’ weddings, birthdays and other celebrations at Enticing Cuisine in Batavia.

And when his clients are looking for something different, this chef loves to show his creative side.

“I will share my menu with clients and tell them we can pick from here or you can tell me what you want,” Stoffels says. “I recently had a customer who wanted a brunch for her daytime wedding reception.”

He first decided to pursue his own business in 2007, as a personal chef. Later he established Enticing Cuisine with his wife, Diocelina. The full-service catering company allows Stoffels to use his culinary skills to customize clients’ biggest celebrations.

When he had the opportunity to bring his fresh flavors to the Batavia banquet location of the former Riverview

Banquets in 2020, he says it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. He opened the doors in January 2021 with a remodeled banquet hall as a space for wedding receptions and other events.

Stoffels has been working in kitchens since 1988. He attended Kendall College back when it was located in Evanston and earned his degree in culinary arts in 1996. “Kendall College was a great place to learn,” Stoffels says. Following college he worked in several top kitchens, adding that in the restaurant world, experience is what truly teaches one how to thrive.

“Cooking is really hands-on and you learn what you can with life experiences,” Stoffels says.

For Stoffels, having a business in Batavia is more than just a great location. It’s a place he’s lived in for a large part of his life, having watched it grow and evolve through the years.

“Batavia has a great small-town feel,” he says.

It wasn’t easy: The ongoing pandemic created challenges for clients trying to host events, but the couple maintained their vision. He handles the food, and she assists with the decor, reservations and many other aspects of the business. They are a small business, but he says that allows them to be hands-on when it comes to serving customers and creating a dining experience that fits their event.

Like many banquet halls, he offers traditional items but also isn’t afraid to get creative, whether a client is looking to feature a special ethnic dish or to serve guests something fun and different.

The first year in the Batavia location has brought weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. There were bridal and baby showers and even a bar mitzvah, too.

Having guests celebrate life and love while enjoying his cooking gives this chef joy and inspires him to continue creating cuisine that entices the senses.

Stumped as to what to give that special someone? You can’t go wrong with the gift of jewelry.

“Dainty styles, whether single or double layers, 16 to 18 inches in length, are trending now, or some longer pieces that are great for any of your outfits for going out for a special occasion for Valentine’s or lovely gifts for everyday wearing.”

Kane County Magazine tapped local experts to uncover current trends in the sparkly stuff so you can give a piece that will be worn time and again.

From fine jewelry to everyday wear, there’s a price point to fit every budget — and what’s popular now may surprise you.

“I love how people are really connecting to gifts,” says Karen Hollis, owner of K.Hollis Jewelers in Batavia. “There’s been a lot of births and engagements this year, and it seems that diamonds seem to cover all of it. Say you have a mother with three children. I’ve had a customer buy three rows of diamonds, calling that her mother’s ring.

Another person had two kids and she got two rows of diamonds. That’s never happened before. People are just getting creative with what they want. I just think that’s so cool.”

Lynne Ball, manager and buyer at Liz & Kate Boutique in Geneva, says heart-shaped jewelry is still big for Valentine’s Day, whether embellished with rhinestones or simple silver or gold. “A lot of moms get them for their daughters,” says Ball.

“Simplicity is still trending because we still are not heading out and about overabundantly,” says Ball.

“Simple silver and gold with a little bit of dazzle in stones is moving forward. Because we’re still wearing masks, not large statement pieces, not large hoops, but more sophisticated and dainty earrings, bracelets and whatnot.”

Liz & Kate carries a selection of rings that flex to fit, opening over the knuckle and securing around the base of the finger, “if you want to have a little bit of something on your hand,” says Ball. “Or it might just be a bracelet as opposed to a whole set. It really comes down to personal preference.”

“Oval diamonds seem to be popular, but round is definitely the most popular shape because it is the most brilliant,” says Hollis at K.Hollis Jewelers. She’s also done a handful of blue sapphire rings. As for the ring itself, yellow gold has been on the rise, “but white gold is still on top,” she notes.

“Engagement is a fun way to get creative,” Hollis, who specializes in custom redesign, says. “It’s my favorite thing to do. Bridal has been really fun when someone has inherited Mom’s diamond and they want to take it out of the old setting.”

Hollis lets nothing go to waste. After the stone is removed, she makes the band into a necklace for the bride or the mother.

She also shares a money-saving tip with couples: Lab-grown diamonds are outselling mined diamonds seven to one. “They can get a bigger diamond, higher color, higher clarity for almost half the price of a mined diamond. The trend now is girls are starting with 1.25-carat diamond and going up. They’re wanting the skinniest, simple band with the big diamond on top. That’s really hot right now. Then they are adding diamond wedding bands with it.”

Matchy-matchy seems to be on the decline. “Brides aren’t necessarily buying a wedding band to match their engagement ring,” she says.

“They’re looking to stack one on either side or getting a different band totally instead of the one that matches. There are no rules.

Everyone is getting creative and making it their own, and I love that.”

The Geneva Bridal Stroll will bring together 30 businesses to showcase how they can help with your big day

he date has been set, and the next few months in your planner are just waiting for dress fittings, hair appointments, makeup tutorials and tastings to fill them.

It’s time to plan your wedding day and with such a momentous occasion on the horizon, any help with details and logistics is welcome.

“The Chamber was approached to see if we would like to create a new Bridal Stroll, (and) the first one was supposed to be in 2020.”

After being put on hold due to the pandemic, the Bridal Stroll is back and will be a ticketed event.

If this is you, mark your calendars for the first Geneva Bridal Stroll from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 27.

Bundle up, gather your nearest and dearest and head to downtown Geneva to begin your wedding planning journey on the right foot.

“The Bridal Stroll will consist of 15 storefronts located in downtown Geneva as well as a couple in Batavia,” notes Rogers. “Businesses who do not have storefronts will be partnering up with Penrose, Copper Fox and Cafe & Barr where they (will be) able to display their products and services for brides (and) weddings!”

Nancy McElvenny, owner of top-tier bridal boutique and participating vendor The Crystal Bride, encourages attendees to make the most of the Bridal Stroll. “It’s a great event where brides get to come into the town of Geneva and (visit) the venues to get a sense of what the store is like and what they offer, and they can follow up and make appointments at a future date,” she says. “It’s wonderful to get to meet the brides and let them know that we want to be a part of their story and we want to be a part of their special day.”

M

andy Buerster, like many people, found herself taking stock of her professional life in the face of the pandemic.

Although she enjoyed running a T-shirt business out of her home, Buerster knew she wanted to do something outside of her house after being stuck at home during the early days of COVID-19.

Her son’s girlfriend came across the right opportunity for Buerster — Magnolia, a national company that makes plant-based bath and soap products. Intrigued by the business model, Buerster purchased a licensing agreement to open a St. Charles location of Magnolia Soap and Bath Co. last spring.

The company was founded by a mom looking for alternative beauty products for her daughter’s sensitive skin. Throughout the country, there are more than 20 stores, including the one in St. Charles, that are locally owned and operated.

Buerster likens the store’s uniqueness to that of a restaurant where you can watch the products being prepared.

“We make everything right here in the store. It’s an experience to see the soap

poured or bath bombs being made,” says Buerster, a St. Charles resident.

“Since we make every product ourselves, we know exactly what goes into them,” she says.

The most popular item is the soap bars.

Bars come in different singular colors, like purple for lavender, or a kaleidoscope of colors, like the mixture of different shades of blue and white for the “Frozen” bar. The store also makes its own laundry soap, of which free samples are available.

Many of the containers are reusable, such as the dough bowl candles. Once the candles burn down, customers can get a refill for $15, Buerster explains.

If you’re looking for a fun girls’ night out or date night activity, check out the store’s popular private parties. Each attendee makes two to three bath bombs per person during these interactive parties held after store hours. You can

So far Buerster notes the response has been wonderful from not only the St. Charles community but the surrounding area. She even has customers coming in from Chicago to buy these products.

“It feels like a small business even though it’s (a) franchise,” she says.

The biggest change for Buerster is being out interacting with people instead of working alone at home.

“I enjoy helping people find products that might help them relax during this stressful time.  KC: Can you share some examples of how you’ve gone above and beyond?

JH: From finding a backup photographer the day of the wedding when the couple’s contracted photographer accidentally double-booked, to a time my colleague was ready to stand in and officiate when the couple’s booked officiate had not shown up with two minutes until go time. I can go on and on with similar stories, but at the end of the day our team is here to handle whatever the big day

sends your way.  KC: What’s your favorite wedding proposal story?

JH: I love hearing our couples tell us how they came to the Paramount Theatre for their first date, or were proposed to on the riverwalk outside the Meyer Ballroom. Being such a staple in downtown Aurora is so magical, and we get to continue making couples’ memories here. We’ve even had couples get married here and then come back for a baby shower.

he Herrington Inn and Spa hailed its silver anniversary in 2018, and in spring 2023 will commemorate 30 years as a destination along the Fox River in Geneva.

While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has proven a unique challenge to staff and visitors in recent years, the ambience at the 60-room Inn remains a constant for guests from all corners of the suburbs, state and country.

Sophistication Cedar Fox Weddings & Events, which opened last summer, is already wowing couples

A

fter several years of owning and running a venue used for special events — including bridal showers — it seemed only natural for Karen Ramella to expand along the lines of a wedding venue.

She and her husband, Lance, purchased the former home of Johnson’s Statuary on the west side of the Fox River. The two restored the original home, added new construction for the venue space itself and hosted their first wedding late last summer.

“We started feeling like downtown St. Charles could use a wedding space,” she says.

Cedar Fox Weddings & Events, which is located just a block from Main Street, has a “blend of historic charm and urban sophistication,” says Ramella.

Inside the venue, you’ll find vaulted ceilings, abundant natural light, clean lines and trendy rectangular tables. Outside and attached to the venue is the ceremony space, a veranda that can be enclosed and heated to accommodate couples at any time of the year. Once the reception starts, the

veranda area remains a popular space for guests to relax and chat.

“Couples enjoy that they don’t need to do a lot as far as decor goes,” Ramella says, noting minimal greenery works just as well as lavish floral arrangements in the modern, comfortable space.

Cedar Fox Weddings allows couples to bring in their preferred caterer, granting even greater customization to their special day. The space also includes a bridal suite and free public parking.

“It was everything we wanted,” says Cara Oxnevad.

She and her husband, Matt, were the first couple to book at Cedar Fox Weddings. “I couldn’t be happier.”

The two married on the veranda in October, then hosted their reception inside. Oxnevad says the long, rectangular tables added to the fun, family atmosphere of the night. “It just felt modern and crisp,” she says. “We got to add everything we wanted.”

Because the venue opened after the pandemic began, the Ramellas have not had to work around

rescheduled dates from 2020 cancellations. The venue still has some 2022 dates available for booking, a process that includes a private tour with the owner herself. “It’s very important for us that we have a connection with our couples,” she says.

The location provides a rare opportunity for visiting family and friends to stay in downtown St. Charles for the entire weekend — rehearsal dinner at a local restaurant, lodging at one of the nearby hotels, then ceremony and reception at Cedar Fox. “We really feel that makes it unique,” says Ramella.

The venue is set up to welcome countless happy couples to marriage, this year and beyond.

“We are really happy with the end result," she said.

ith the current cold weather, there are a number of places around town that are serving great warm and delicious food. But one favorite spot that warms me up after a long day is Skippy’s Gyros.

Whether lunch, dinner or snack (at any hour), Skippy’s is right around the corner with two spots in the region: at the Geneva/St Charles border and in South Elgin. They have a whole host of delectable originals and a cool striped sign with a bright logo that entices you in to the zip or skip of the excitement of the restaurant.

To start I ordered their Greek salad, which is as great as any Greek town restaurant and in fact a bit larger and fulfilling. Crisp romaine lettuce, red tomato wedges, fresh cut cucumber along sliced slivers of red onion give this salad the main ingredients of a Greek salad.

Then to send us to a Greek Isle

on the Mediterranean Sea, they adorn the salad with feta cheese and kalamata black olives. Topped with a house-made vinaigrette with herbs and oil, this salad is refreshing and keeps you trim.

For the main course, who can resist the name of the restaurant as to determine the star dish? Gyros!

My favorite is the chicken gyros.

They are a blend of chicken and herbs and spices, cooked spirally or rotisserie in a vertical manner for hours until the meat just becomes tender, juicy and full of flavor. I ordered the king-sized portion as I was hungry and literally ate the gyro meat with a fork, savoring every bite alone. They do serve with tomato, lettuce or onion if you want, but for me the gyro meat itself is full of so much flavor that it stands alone! And if that was not enough, they either have a honey mustard dip or the traditional tzatziki cucumber yogurt sauce to go with it. Bam! This joint is a winner!

Q: Has the pandemic changed the guidelines for screening?

A: No, the guidelines for screening are the same even amid the pandemic. In fact, a lot of people have postponed their screenings or surveillance, which has resulted in more cancers and other later stage diseases. I recommend catching up with the screenings and surveillance so that you are up to date.

Q: Has the screening age of colonoscopy for cancer changed to 45?

A: Yes, recently a study was done that demonstrated a significant increase in colon cancer for current 27-year-olds compared to a 27-year-old from 40 years ago. This prompted the change of the guidelines for men and women to get screened with a colonoscopy at age 45 rather than 50.

Q: I have gas bloating. Some of my friends have diarrhea, and some have constipation. Are there any new medications available?

A: In the last few years, there are new medicines for constipation that work well for patients with mild symptoms or chronic symptoms. In addition, the same is true for diarrhea that is irritable bowel-related.

Prior to giving those medications, a proper evaluation and workup should be done to rule out other diseases like celiac sprue, infections, Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, among others.

In addition, structural evaluation to rule out reasons is important as well.

Q: Heartburn and gas are bothering me. What should I do?

Should I try over-the-counter medicines, and for how long?

A: It is important to go to a gastroenterologist for evaluation of

the heartburn. An evaluation should include an endoscopy to determine the level of esophagitis and rule out a precancerous condition, Barrett’s esophagus. In addition, it is important to identify ulcers and gastritis. Other conditions such as eosinophilic esophagitis, which are related to food allergies, can present similarly. Length of treatment and types of treatment, along with lifestyle and dietary changes, can be determined.

Q: I have been drinking a moderate amount of alcohol over the years, but I really haven’t had any issues. Should I check out my liver and GI system, along with others?

A: Alcohol can affect everyone differently. In some, one drink can

cause problems while, in others who drink a lot, there are no issues. I do recommend getting some liver tests or what they call a CMP (complete metabolic profile) lab test to look for any evidence of effect on the liver periodically. Then, next steps can be determined if needed.

Dear Jane: Great question. Colon cancer can affect anyone, regardless of family history. Everyone over age 45 should get a colonoscopy. If you have family history you should start at age 40 or 10 to 15 years before the youngest relative with a problem. Screening helps reduce risk.

Dear Kristen: Yes, food intolerances to lactose, sucrose and fructose are common, so you may need to avoid those. We have tests in the office for that. The symptoms of IBS and food allergies are often similar, so testing for food allergies is reasonable. We can test for that, too. SAYING ‘I DO’ TO PANDEMIC WEDDINGS

W

hen my culinary journey began over a decade ago, I never imagined I’d end up owning a bakery. The even bigger surprise was that I’d be making wedding cakes.

out of my quaint Chicago apartment, demand for our goods led to the opening of our brickand-mortar bakery in 2016. When Two Wild Seeds (now closed) was in full swing, weddings accounted for half of our business and we were gearing up for 2020 to be our busiest season yet.

Though I loved baking at home, cake decorating was its own entity. In culinary school, I remember a particular day when I’d fallen victim to what our pastry instructor called the cake decorating “death spiral”: endlessly smoothing, fixing, fussing and resmoothing … eventually, she lovingly told me to put down the spatula and back away. Cakes seemed overly tedious, and as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I couldn’t fathom having the patience to decorate them — let alone for someone’s wedding day!

Then COVID-19 hit.

Fast forward a few years and ironically, it was weddings that catapulted my professional culinary career. After teaming up with my mom and catering weddings for friends and family

Of 50-plus booked weddings, all but three canceled. With newfound supply and staff shortages as well as ever-changing guidelines and restrictions, we were at a crossroads and unable to reschedule future dates. Needless to say, it was devastating to both wedding industry professionals and the couples.

From an insider’s perspective, the most discouraging aspect was watching couples call off their weddings completely due to conflicting desires surrounding the planning of their big day. One wanted the fairy tale wedding filled with engagement parties, bridal showers, the rehearsal dinner, a 200-plus guest list at a swanky indoor venue, brunch

That’s when it hit me: Our society had placed so much pressure on what a wedding should be that couples quickly lost sight of the actual marriage. On the flip side, microweddings began to emerge and we saw a progressive shift toward more intimate, minimalist celebrations that gave me hope for the future.

Now, as we’ve entered 2022 and COVID-19 rates have skyrocketed once again, it’s crucial that couples embrace this new normal and reevaluate their expectations.

Need a jump start?

KEEP PERSPECTIVE. Strip away the bells and whistles that are more for show and less about meaning. Remember: It’s a marriage, not a circus.

DO IT YOURSELF. From homemade treats (see this month’s recipe) to thrifting for antique serving dishes, there are endless projects that will not only cut back on costs but also alleviate the stress of coordinating multiple vendors.

ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES. Perhaps a close friend plays an instrument for the ceremony, or the flower bouquet is wrapped in an heirloom piece of fabric.

Personalized details will make the celebration feel more authentic and unique, no matter how small.

HIRE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. While some areas of a wedding can be simplified, don’t compromise on high-quality photos. Candid memories from your special day will last a lifetime, no matter the circumstances.

EMBRACE INTIMACY. Weddings with gigantic guest lists often overwhelm couples, so rather than being pulled in a million different directions, find joy in a slower paced, more intimate setting surrounded by your closest friends and family.

MEXICAN WEDDING COOKIES These traditional shortbread cookies laced with orange zest and pecans are not only super simple to prepare — but they can also be made in advance and frozen, which is great for any special occasion!

MAKES ABOUT 24 COOKIES INGREDIENTS: • 2 sticks salted butter, room temperature • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • Zest of 1 orange

• 2 cups all-purpose flour • Pinch of salt • 2/3 cup pecans, finely chopped • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the butter and sugar.

Beat a few minutes until light and fluffy.

Add the vanilla extract and orange zest; beat again until incorporated.

Next, add the flour, salt and chopped pecans. Mix until just combined.

Chill the dough about 15 minutes. Then with a small ice cream scoop (or heaping tablespoon), scoop the dough into balls, placing them about one-half inch apart on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.

SUZANNE WEGENER The Tri-Cities are booming with arts and artists — perhaps nowhere more vibrantly than Batavia’s Water Street Studios, which hosts events, galleries and up to 25 artists in residence. Each month, Kane County Magazine and Water Street Studios are partnering to highlight artists and their work.

S

uzanne Wegener set up her space at Water Street Studios just over a year ago, in January 2021. But even then, the nature artist and seamstress was no stranger to the area.

“I’ve enjoyed the Batavia area for most of my life,” she says, in particular noting she enjoys biking the Fox River Trail and seeing the historic riverfront buildings. “My son and his wife moved into their first house in Batavia and we enjoy going with them to the downtown restaurants and walking along the river.”

Wegener’s career has included watercolor painting, nature artwork, medical illustration and more. “I was an adult before I learned you can blend art and science into a career,” she says.

Now, add beaded artwork to the list of her talents.

“In addition to my scientific background, most specifically botanical, I am also a seamstress,” she notes. “The work I am most proud of is a Pink Lady Slipper orchid. The beaded works blend my scientific work and my love of beads and vintage fabrics. I am working on a series of native plants and animals created in beads over painted and collage backgrounds.”

In addition to creating and showing her work, Wegener has taught classes nationally and locally, including Fine Line Creative Arts Center and the Morton Arboretum. She also worked for 11 years as a nature arts education manager, a job that correlates with how she describes her goals as an artist: “Capturing the details of nature and sparking a curiosity of the natural world.”

Before becoming a resident artist, Wegener had taken classes and attended exhibits and markets at Water Street Studios.

“The art shows in the area are wonderful places to meet artists who work in a variety of mediums,” she says.

FAVORITE THINGS Wasco Nursery’s preferred plants range from hydrangeas to hostas

L

ove is in the air … and in the garden.

Clients ask me all the time what my favorite plant is. That’s like asking someone who your favorite child is (I do have a favorite, but don’t tell my two boys...). There are so many amazing plants that grow for us in Illinois that it’s very hard to name favorites. I have plenty

that I don’t like, a very large list that I do like and also have some that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE and can’t live without. In the spirit of February and all the love, here are some plants that I cannot live without!  TREES: This is probably the toughest to name a fave as I love all trees. But if I really, really, really had to pick a favorite, it would probably be the oaks. So stately and sturdy and the state tree of Illinois.

They host so many insects and pollinators and

are majestic even in youth. But I also love tulip trees ... and katsura trees ... and some of the new maples … and I just planted a cute little ‘Perfect Purple’ crabapple for the fruit for the birds ... oh, and the bald cypress … SEE? This is hard.  SHRUBS: OK, not going to lie. I LOVE hydrangeas like most people. Can’t get enough of them. Even though it seems so basic, there are so many different hydrangea and each one has its own

characteristics that are great for gardens. I don’t think there is such a thing as too many hydrangeas.  EVERGREEN/CONIFER: I’m just starting to appreciate the unusual conifers that are available to us in the Midwest. I always thought of evergreen as something that was just part of the big picture.

A boxwood hedge here, a row of yews there. But now that we are able to grow unusual cultivars of pines, spruces, fir, cypress and more, I have found an appreciation for the “weirdo” evergreens and have started using them more in my designs. I love the smaller stature of ‘Vanderwolf’ pines when you don’t have room for a giant white pine.

I also love gold in the landscape so ‘Gold Mops’ cypress is a great specimen. But my favorite is my ‘Snow in the Valley’ pine as it’s adorable in my garden as a specimen and was a housewarming gift from my boss, who is even more into weirdo evergreens than me!  PERENNIALS: I love to collect perennials — I tend to experiment a lot with “one of this, one of that” in my perennial gardens.

I have a lot of different species, so it’s tough to narrow down a favorite, but if pinned down, I would say ferns are toward the top of the love list. I also am a sucker for a cool hosta; and for the sunny spots in my gardens, I love different varieties of sedum.

 GRASSES: I think that ornamental grasses deserve a spot in every garden. They are so beautiful all summer, blowing in the breezes, and then when fall comes, most reward us with red, orange and yellow fall colors. And even now when it’s super cold and boring, the grasses in gardens look tall and sharp and give nice interest.

My hands-down faves are ‘Standing Ovation’ bluestem and prairie dropseed. Both are smaller in stature and have amazing fall color.  ANNUALS: Every year I say I am not going to plant a bunch of annuals, but every year I plant a bunch of annuals. This past growing season I fell in love with zinnias (that I proudly grew from seed for the first time) as well as the annual salvias such as Proven Winner’s ‘Rockin’ Deep Purple.’ Both of these easy annuals attract a ton of pollinators … my hummingbird friends seem to really love all the salvia.

Let us grow them into the garden of your dreams.

 TROPICALS/HOUSEPLANTS: Believe it or not, I tend to kill houseplants, so my collection has been thin for a while. But during the pandemic, I paid more attention to my houseplants and added some nice things that are doing well. I love hoyas — tough and easy, and hopefully someday my little guys will flower. I also have had fun growing philodendrons. I especially like the hanging types with different foliage patterns and colors.

C.A.L.M. Local “baby whisperer” helps fussy babies — and their parents — find relief

A

s a first-time mother, Cecelia Rhoades wasn’t sure why her newborn daughter, Leighton, cried for long periods of time for no apparent reason. She was fed, changed and not overtired.

During a 36-hour crying spell, Rhoades took her daughter to the ER, hoping to find answers.

Instead, they were told it was just colic and gastrointestinal issues.

Eventually Leighton’s pediatric gastroenterologist referred her to Patti Ideran, a pediatric occupational therapist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital. Dubbed the “baby whisper,” Ideran literally wrote the book on how to help fussy babies — and their parents.

Ideran’s journey began as being the mother of a

fussy baby herself.

“When my now 30-year-old was born, he was really fussy,” says Ideran, who lives in Batavia.

“We got the runaround that he’ll grow out of it, but I felt there has to be something we can do to help.”

She began doing research to find out why some babies are fussier than others. Through her research, Ideran developed the CALM Method, which stands for Cues, Arousal Levels and Massage.

“Fussy babies don’t give clear cues like other babies,” Ideran says.

For instance, when a fussy baby puts their hand in their mouth, it doesn’t necessarily mean the baby is hungry — they just might want to be held. Ideran also noticed their arousal levels are higher compared to other babies. She helps

parents work on soothing methods — like infant massage — so the baby isn’t so dependent on the parents.

“It’s hard to carry a baby all day if they have other kids or things to do,” Ideran says.

Parents, like Rhoades, get a referral from their doctor to see Ideran when remedies like changing formulas don’t work. After the initial evaluation to discuss the baby’s sleeping and eating patterns, Ideran follows up with parents over four to eight sessions about things they can do at home.

She also asks parents to fill out a cry diary. “I use the diary to look for patterns like if the baby is fussy after

meals, awake too long, or if they have days and nights mixed up,” Ideran explains.

For three days, Rhoades logged every 15 minutes, describing what her daughter was doing and her mood.

After analyzing the data, Ideran noticed Leighton was awake too long, leading her to become overtired and fussy.

“Even us doing the tracking, we saw some trends ourselves where she’d be fussy and sleep patterns,” Rhoades says. “When we saw Patti, we really felt a sense of relief that we finally found someone who could help us.”

After being denied grant opportunities to do further research on the topic, Ideran decided to turn her findings

into a book, “The CALM Baby Method: Solutions for Fussy Days and Sleepless Nights.” Published last April by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the book features insights from Ideran, co-author Dr. Mark Fishbein and other experts about the causes of a baby’s cry and ways parents can help.

“The book isn’t just for parents of a fussy baby but really any first-time parent can benefit from these tips,” she says.

As for Rhoades, she found infant massage and different ways to hold Leighton have paid off.

“She’s so happy now! She’s a completely different baby,” Rhoades says.

While the staff has created fun themes for birthdays, these programs aren’t only for annual milestones.

SUPERDAD EATS HIS HAT ABOUT, WELL, WINTER HATS THEMSELVES

T

his winter, my latest fashion accessory is a warm hat.

Those who know me may suspect that’s a setup line to a joke. For most of my four decades-plus walking this earth, hats and I have had an, um, “on-again, off-again” kind of relationship. (Insert snare drum and groan here, sure. But really, please stay with me.)

For many of my teen years, and well into college, my eyes and crown were regularly well shaded, thanks to the ball caps that were quite often perched atop my noggin.

It was the best I could do. My admiration and

envy for the men who could pull off a proper Stetson cowboy hat has never wavered. (As my moniker indicates, I am far too suburban.)

And I’ve written previously of my interest in fedoras — but I am told (mostly by my wife) that they look funny on me.

But ball caps? Now we’re talking.

In any event, they largely were left on the top of the dresser or in the closet on weekdays, and far too many nights and weekends, thanks to that pesky “dress code” mandated by the companies who paid the bills and apparently frowned on ball caps in the office and on assignment.

Through my 20s, though, no vacation destination was complete without exchanging a picture of Andrew Jackson for a commemorative addition to my collection.

(My favorites? A snapback emblazoned with NASA from Cape Canaveral, and a black number with white trim with a red embroidered “NC,” on the front, from the Outer Banks of North Carolina.)

But there I was, a few days later, standing in front of a store display, intentionally picking out what was to become my first in a series of new stocking caps.

Now years later, from mid-fall to mid-spring, these caps go with me everywhere. If not planted atop my head, you’ll usually find one tucked in my coat pocket.

But then something strange happened. The caps began to collect dust altogether as middle age crept in. Some of my formerly beloved caps began to, um, shrink as my waist size expanded, and the hair that had once been lush and wavy became progressively … less lush and wavy.

But this winter, that relationship with my haberdashery has gone to a new level. Forcing me to dig a little deeper into my wallet than has been the custom, the latest addition to my winter fashion line (see, that is the earlier referenced joke) quite simply brings comfort every time I pop it on.

Now, I understand hats should not be scapegoated for my genetic failings. Countless articles on the interwebs confirm this to be so. But regardless of who or what is to blame, it soon became imperative to allow my hair to blow in the breeze for as long as nature would allow.

For those unfamiliar with the sensation (I believe the Danes call it “hygge”), the oversized black knit cap, with its gripping Thinsulate insert, all but wraps the entirety of my globe in a warm hug. It stands as a rude gesture to Jack Frost, a bulletproof helmet of sorts against his whipping, biting breezes, challenging him, again, to do his worst.

Then, one winter day, one of those breezes was quite cold. Living my entire life in northern Illinois, that was nothing new. But what was new was just how cold such a breeze could feel moving across my steadily revealing scalp.

Some might say this new attachment to the hat is a sign of maturity. Others might say it just means I’m getting old.

And so, a new relationship was born.

Both may be true.

It wasn’t one I ever expected. For most of my younger years, I’d rather freeze than be caught in a stocking cap.

(I exaggerate, but barely.)

Beyond that, though, the hat strangely stands as a visible sign of a new personal commitment of sorts, an evolving outlook on life.

It doesn’t really matter what it looks like. Or what others think.

It’s simply recognizing, as my life runs ever on toward autumn, the season now demands brushing aside the vain hubris of youth to attend to more important things: health, family, friendship, spiritual and mental peace, and leaving a legacy that just might inspire my kids and others, somewhere, to take charge of their lives and try to do better.

How that’s expressed may depend on the day.

And today, amid this always lovely northern Illinois winter, that means pausing at the door to pop on that hat, wondering why I hadn’t done so sooner.  Jonathan Bilyk writes about the triumphs and travails of being a modernday dad who legitimately enjoys time with his family, while tolerating a dog that seems to adore him. He also doesn’t really like the moniker “Superdad” because it makes it sound like he wants to wear his undergarments on the outside of his pants. (Also, the cape remains on back order.)

eeding children is the heartbeat and focus of the Fideliter Club of Elgin, Elgin’s oldest philanthropic organization founded in 1882.

Its nine founders at that time were dedicated to gathering food and clothing to distribute to the needy. In 1885, the idea of a charity “ball” was born to help philanthropic needs. Their mission has endured, grown and continued through three centuries.

Spearheaded by its membership of more than 40 women from the Fox Valley area, the Fideliter Club’s sole purpose is to raise funds for local charitable projects to feed Fox Valley area children.

“Through proceeds obtained by supporters of our annual charity gala and generous sponsors,” says Judy Hanlon, Fideliter Club president, “we are able to continue our mission of making a substantial impact on feeding children in the greater Fox Valley area.”

“The devastating pandemic drastically affected children and families in our communities,” adds Hanlon, “and although we weren’t able to hold our charity gala for two years, the absolute generosity of our donors still enabled us to donate close to $100,000 to our nonprofit partners during this time.”

Because of the wide range of donations the Fideliter Club receives, the club is able to partner with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, Food For Greater Elgin and the Batavia Food Panty. It provides nourishing meals, milk, food backpacks and more to comfort hungry children.

Members regularly provide hands-on volunteer time and assist in food distribution at the Northern Illinois Food Bank facility in Geneva and the Batavia

Food Pantry.

There are six important supportive projects funded by the club that help feed children.

Project Produce provides nutritious snacks to 150 members of the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin each day during the school year and summer session.

The Summer Breakfast Program feeds children at the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin during the summer session.

The very popular and innovative Birthday Party in a Bag is provided for Food for Greater Elgin children and the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, which reaches 2,000 children, ranging in age from 4-7. The monthly Birthday Pack is full of surprises for their birthday.

The kit includes a box of cake mix and frosting, birthday candles, balloons and other items to make their day special.

Funds are distributed to the Northern Illinois Food Bank; the Backpack Program for the St. Charles school district, which provides food for children over the weekend; the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin; and Food for Greater Elgin.

Providing milk for children has been a special project for the Fideliter Club for many years.
