rtists and clothing designers from across the Midwest will join forces on Batavia’s Water Street Studios next month for what likely will be the Tri-Cities’ boldest statement on fashion and beauty.

The venue at 160 South Water St. will turn its Loading Dock Gallery into a fashion runway Saturday, September 7, for its annual fundraiser, ”on-sem’-bel.”

Titled The Chair and What You Wear, this year’s “on-sem’-bel" will bring together an elegant runway show comprised of bold art, cutting-edge fashion, and contemporary dance.

Submissions have come in categories including fashion, chair design, fine art and accessories.

“The goal of is to surprise and delight our audience with a new combination of elements each year,” said event co-chair and resident Water Street Studio artist Katherine Kratzer.

“Attendees should expect a bit of mystery and a lot of art.”

The fundraising event began in 2012, its impetus the collaborative community that’s building in Batavia around Water Street Studios. But whereas last year’s show was about team-building and collaboration between artists, this year’s event is focusing on contemporary artists’ ties to design history, particularly iconic chairs.

“There is a long and collaborative history among chair design, fashion, art, and architecture,” adds Rita Grendze, event co-chair and also a resident artist at Water Street Studios.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase individual interpretations of iconic chair designs, and to engage the community in art that is not only unique and beautiful, but functional as well.”

“Last year was a great success,” continues Grendze. “This year’s event will be even bigger and bolder, and continue to expand the boundaries of art, design and fashion.”

Some participating artists are truly local, from right in Batavia, but also from as far away as Los Angeles.

“The creations that will be gracing our runway are spectacular--not like anything you’ve seen here before,” says Grendze.

Returning to "on-sem’-bel" as artistic director is Andrea Reynders, director of design with Chicago Fashion Incubator.

She boasts nearly 40 years experience creating runways for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Around the Coyote, and the Gold Coast Fashion Show.

“We are thrilled to have someone with such a great deal of experience and vision,” says Kratzer.

New for 2013 will be a performance by Chicago-based Dance Company, Core Project.

In addition, the Main Gallery will feature artwork created by artists specifically for the show.

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will begin at 7 p.m. in the Main Gallery, showcasing the art created for the exhibit.

“With the growth of this fundraiser, we needed more room and it seemed logical to dedicate our Main Gallery to this wonderful work,” says Grendze. “All of the pieces to be displayed were created by artists especially for the show, and all will be for sale. After the event, pieces featured on the runway, including the chairs and fashions showcased, will move to the Main Gallery for the public to enjoy.”

The show will begin promptly at 9 p.m. Intertwined with the runway show will be a performance by Core Project.

“We are thrilled to have Core taking part in the production, and looking forward to seeing what their athletic and challenging dance can bring to our stage,” says Grendze.

Runway show prizes will be awarded for the best-in-show ensemble, but there will also be a chance for those in attendance to vote for four “Peoples’ Choice” winners (one in each of the categories of chair design, art, fashion and accessories).

Tickets are available at two levels: $85 gets the full evening’s events, including cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and guaranteed seating at the runway ($60 tax deductible). For an

to life as a college student

I

n the Reynolds household in Geneva, eightyear-old Eleanor and ten-year-old Cameron aren’t the only ones preparing for a new school year. This fall, their mom, Emily will be a student too.

The 39-year old former hairstylist will be a full-time undergraduate student at Waubonsee Community College, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education, with a goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.

“I’ve been taking online classes to get my feet wet, but now I’ll be going fulltime,” says Emily.

Emily’s mom, Diane Jordan, couldn’t be prouder.

“When she shared her desire to go back to school, I was delighted,” shares Diane. “Though I knew it would be more difficult since she now has responsibilities as a wife and mother, I also know she can overcome any obstacle.”

A native of Carol Stream where she met her husband, Jim, Emily graduated in the top five percent of her class at Glenbard North High School, and had acceptances from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, but no clear career path. After a year at College of DuPage, she decided to go to beauty school.

“When she was younger, she often talked about two things she wanted to do—be the first female president of the United States and be a beautician,” says Diane. “She has a creative bent, and I thought beauty school would be a good outlet for that.”

Emily was successful in her beauty career, thought it wasn’t her passion, and after several years as a stay-at-home mom, she didn’t look forward to returning to evening and weekend

hours. Her next career—whatever it was-would be more family-friendly, so she began to explore other options.

“I read all kinds of books, but it was hard to know what I loved,” she recalls. Babysitting for a local teacher sparked an idea. “I knew I loved working with kids, and since my family is my top priority, I wanted a career that would fit their schedule, so in the back of my mind, I started to realize that teaching was the closest fit.”

Becoming a teacher meant earning a college degree, and initially Emily had doubts.

“When she questioned this decision and the amount of time it would take to complete her schooling, I reminded her that she was still young enough to reap the benefits of school,” Diane says. “When she wondered about her ability to be back in an educational setting, I reminded her that she is still the same person—smart, competent, disciplined and persevering.”

So far, she’s earned just 12 credit hours online, but this fall she’ll take on a full-time schedule of 13 credit hours, including one online course, during the day while her kids are at school.

And though she’s still a few years away from teaching in a classroom, her back-to-school experience is providing Eleanor and Cameron with an important lesson about the value of education.

“My son did a research paper in fourth grade and saw me doing a research paper at the same time,” says Emily. “I think it’s inspiring for them to see me doing what I ask them to do.”

T

he school year is approaching with a great deal of excitement and anticipation, both for my kids and me.

This year marks a lot of changes in our school routine, mostly for my daughter. Madelyn is entering first grade, and since she only went to half-day kindergarten, this will be her first year attending school all day.

We also are changing schools, as we moved during the summer.

While I know this will be a big transition for her, I also know she will do fine, as she complained several times last year that her day at school was too short. She’s the quintessential first-born child, who embraces school and learning with zeal.

My biggest anxiety comes from the return to the morning routine, namely getting to the bus stop.

Last year was our first experience with the bus, and it quickly became my least favorite part of the day.

Initially, I was excited to go to the bus stop each morning, since I saw as it as opportunity to socialize with my neighbors. For years, I had watched the ladies from the neighborhood coffee clutch in the morning after the kids got on the bus. It seemed to be where all the important information and goings-on of the neighborhood were discussed. Once my kids started taking the bus, I would finally be “in the know,” I thought.

The first day, we allowed plenty of time for photo opportunities and the kids to show off their new clothes, shoes and backpacks.

Unfortunately, it only took a few days for us to fall into our usual morning rush, in which we ended up racing out the door to get to the bus on time.

Our biggest downfall was dragging younger brother Colin along with us. He added to the frenzy because he usually had some issue right as we walked out the door: trying to find a toy to bring with him, refusing to put on shoes or a coat ,or wanting to ride his scooter shoeless to the bus stop.

Eventually, the novelty of the bus stop wore off for him, and he opted to stay inside and watch cartoons rather than hoof it down to the corner.

Still, even after Colin eliminated himself from the equation, Madelyn and I were racing for the corner each morning. I usually ended up brushing her hair at the bus stop and once followed her up the stairs of the bus while finishing a French braid. It was common for us to get to the bus stop and realize she forgot her mittens or hat or homework from the night before.

We only missed the bus twice, and both times I was able to catch it at the other end of our block five minutes later, after it looped around our neighborhood. I thought to myself, “I would have no problem making this bus each day!”

Even with that knowledge, it only took a week into the “new” bus stop routine before we were back to racing out the door with Madelyn’s backpack half-zipped and my fresh cup of coffee splashing all over me as I hustled down the street.

So, when school starts this year, I know that no matter how early we wake up, there will seem to be never enough time to get all our stuff together and out the door. There will always be one lost glove or a show that Madelyn fixate on, preventing her from getting dressed. She always will get distracted staring at herself in the mirror instead of brushing her teeth, and I’ll always be making one last cup of coffee to bring with me, so I can drink it while socializing after the kids get on the bus.

It wasn’t until more than halfway through the school year when we arrived at the bus stop late, that I mentioned, in my defense, the bus driver had arrived early. My neighbors informed me that the pick up time was supposed to be 8:14 a.m., not 8:19 a.m. like I thought. Helping children navigate the muddy waters of adolescent angst By Tom Witom

T

he phone rings mid-day and it’s your son or daughter’s school. It’s not the nurse or the teacher. It’s the principal calling. And she’s calling because of bullying.

Whether your child is the target or the wrong-doer, it’s a call no parent wants to receive, and never an easy subject to handle.

“Part of the problem now is that any mean behavior (such as mere teasing and trading insults) can get mistaken as bullying,” says Mary Ellen Young, a bully consultant and co-founder of Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence, the group which facilitates the popular "chit chat" programs in local school districts. “We have muddied the waters by labeling everything as bullying and reacting to even minor offenses in big ways.”

Legally, Illinois defines bullying any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or electronically,

directed toward a student that has or can be reasonably predicted to make a student fear bodily harm; detrimentally affect the student’s physical or mental health; or interfere with academic performance or ability to participate or benefit from school services and activities.

In other words, the misbehavior involves using power to impose control over another person.

But bullying is a complex social problem, and experts note that if schools could simply wave a wand and get it to go away, they would do just that.

“The path to success is to keep building social and emotional learning skills and fostering a positive environment,” says Darlene Ruscitti, who cochaired an anti-bullying task force that led to creation in 2011 of a resource manual, “Best Practices in Bullying Prevention and Intervention.”

Such skills address what it means to be tolerant of diversity, the best approach to problem solving and achieving conflict resolution, adds Ruscitti.

“In the past, schools would say to parents, ‘Here’s what educators need you to do for us.

Please help us.’ We have now flipped that role and ask, ‘What can we as educators do to help you?’” Ruscitti says. “We’re discovering that parents are hungry to learn how to be better parents.”

Young says when a parent learns that her child is humiliated, rejected or hurt in any way, it’s natural for a protective “Mama Bear” response to come into play. Before charging off to the school demanding that the bullying stop, she recommends taking a step back and reflecting on what the child is going to learn from the experience and creating a safe haven for the kids at home. She recommends providing activities outside the school where the child can feel confident and accepted by friends.

Ruth Cross, an SEL skills training coach and bullying prevention workshop facilitator, says it’s critical that these skills be taught to victims, bystanders and the bullies themselves.

“I applaud any mom or dad who recognizes that their child is a bully, because our natural tendency is to deny that and cast blame elsewhere,” Young says. “That’s a healthy first step.

“It’s also important to note that roles tend to be very fluid,” Young says. “Sometimes there are cases where a bully is a bully and a victim is a victim. But often someone who is victimized goes on to bully other kids, and the roles get reversed.”

For that reason, Young hesitates to label a person as a bully but prefers to say ‘You’re exhibiting bullying behavior’ – since behavior is a lot easier to change than who we are.

“You can’t control the other child’s behavior or what the school is doing in response to it,” she says. “What you can have control over is what your child takes away from the situation.” kanecountymagazine.com

2) Pursue fitness goals together.

Bag your books with style, and safety in mind

s the school year begins, with it come concerns for child health. There are shots and screenings, allergy medications and eyeglass fittings. But one malady is carried home every day, on the backs of kids across the suburbs.

Disk compression – The same study found that heavy backpack loads cause compression in the spinal disks (the disks between vertebrae that provide padding), particularly of the lower back. The heavier the load, the greater the compression problem.

The American Occupational Therapy Association claims that more than 50 percent of students aged 9 to 20 have chronic back pain from overpacked or poorly-packed backpacks.

Q: There are many different backpack styles.

Q: What problems are created for a growing child by carrying a load of books day in, day out?

A: Problems can be caused in the following areas: Pain – Too much weight in a pack can lead to shoulder, neck, and back pain.

Posture – Children whose backpacks are too heavy walk with an uneven gait, and tend to drop their heads forward. This posture change has the potential to cause long-term spinal damage.

Curvature of the spine – A 2010 University of California study links heavy backpacks to curvature of the lower spine in children who carried 18-pound packs. kanecountymagazine.com

• External frame (while definitely uncool for kids, they rest on the hip and can carry a lot of weight) • Internal frame • Frameless Since most school backpacks are frameless, and it’s unlikely you’d be able to convince your child to wear a backpack with a frame, the solution lies is in getting a good pack, learning how to properly pack it, and then to wear it well.

Q: How can backpack back problems be avoided?

A: Choose a quality backpack.

• Cheap ones won’t offer proper support, or last more than a few months.

• Buy your child a backpack with padded, adjustable shoulder straps, and a padded back piece to protect her back from the pack’s contents.

• A chest or sternum strap that runs across the front, or a strap to go around the waist, both are features that will help steady the load,

• Make sure the pack is lightweight, and of a shape that fits comfortably on your child’s back.

• Make sure the backpack fits; it shouldn’t extend more than four inches below the waistline.

• Avoid straps that dig into the shoulders; they can interfere with circulation, pinch nerves, and cause numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms and hands.

• The best place to purchase a quality pack tends to be at luggage or sporting goods stores. Plan to spend at least $40 for a quality pack.

Also, show your child how to properly pack his backpack.

• Children should only carry 15 percent of their body weight in a backpack.

• Pack the heaviest items at the bottom of the pack, lightest at the top.

• Make use of the pack’s compartments to help distribute the weight more evenly.

• Only carry what is needed that day or week, and clear the bag of clutter regularly.

• Remember, if your child has to struggle to get her pack on or off, or he has to lean forward to carry it, then the pack is too heavy.

Finally, wear your backpack well.

• Always wear the backpack on both shoulders • Ensure that the shoulder straps are pulled snuggly into place • Bend your knees when lifting the backpack.

increasingly a challenge with parents work schedules, long commutes, after school activities and sports too. But making time for a meal can really bring a family together and strengthen the relationship bonds, said Dr. Melissa Sharp, a clinical psychiatrist with the practice Melissa Sharp and Associates in St. Charles.

Wednesday religious education. As the week chugs along there are play dates and parent nights, work dinners and school board meetings. Weekends get filled with ball games and yard work and extended family get-togethers.

If this sounds familiar, you’re hardly alone.

Across our communities, families are finding it more cumbersome to come together around the dinner table, in what once was an everyday occurrence in most suburban households.

With four busy children, school, sports and band practice too, it takes a little help to get dinner on the table at the Sebold house in Batavia.

heating it at home. But regardless of how the menu looks, for mom Carrie the goal is getting her family together at the table.

“I really cherish the time together and being able to talk to each other,” Sebold said. “I can’t say we do it seven nights a week, more like four to five nights a week.”

Finding time for families to eat together is

“You are showing people this is important because you are setting aside time to do this.”

Sharp, who provides counseling to individuals and families, said making time to sit down to a meal together strengthens the family unit. And it need not be dinner. Sharp said if dinner is too hard consider breakfast, lunch too. If weekdays are a challenge, make time on a weekend to bring the family together and catch up with each other.

Keep the family dinner conversation positive, Sharp said. This isn’t the time to reprimand someone for forgetting to complete a task.

“Make it a fun, social experience, the way you would if you were going out with friends,” Sharp said.

Sebold said she grew up with a small family and it was easy to bring everyone to the table each night. With her husband, Sean, and four children: Keeley, 10, Declan, 9, Brody, 8, and Ronan, 6, it can be a challenge finding time for everyone to be together at the table.

One rule they stick to is no electronics at the table. There’s no television on in the background and no phones or toys at the table. Sharp says this is a good rule to follow.

“It tells the children ‘You have my undivided attention. I’m not answering my phone, working on the computer or watching TV,’ and you’re able to focus,” she said. kanecountymagazine.com

At dinner time the Sebold family chats about their day and sometimes the parents create quizzes and games for the children.

Sebold said it’s a chance for each child to take turns and develop a give and take with the conversation. Sometimes there are mock spelling tests, with words specific to each child’s level.

While each child has assigned chores to assist with setting and clearing the table there is a new routine at the Sebold home inviting each child to take a turn planning and preparing Sunday dinner.

“They love planning and making dinner,” Sebold said. Recently Ronan assisted with a dinner of spaghetti and garlic bread while her daughter, Keeley, made pot stickers.

“She went online and found [the recipe].

They were really good too,” Sebold said.

When the kids move out, opportunity moves in for 'empty-nest' parents

W

hen her twin daughters started kindergarten, Nancy Meaney was “that mom.” – the one who followed their school bus for two weeks, worried her girls might get off at the wrong stop. Now Morgan and Catie Meaney are juniors in college, their younger brother, Shawn, a college sophomore. And this month, for the first time since the twins were born, all the children will be living away from home.

“You revolve your life around the kids and all of a sudden, your kids are gone and they don’t need you anymore,” says Meaney, who adds she likes her house filled with loud noise, laughter and chaos. It’s the thought of quiet that makes her a little anxious.

“It’ll just be me, my husband and our two dogs,” she says. “It will be pretty weird.”

Nancy, a fitness instructor and personal trainer, and husband Tom, head football coach at Bartlett high school, will be "empty nesters," a term used to identify those couples whose children recently have moved out of the family home. It's a time when some parents can find themselves struggling with loneliness, unsure of their roles now that the kids have grown.

Marie Egeland, Founder of Intermission Therapies in Geneva, is a therapist and also an empty nester.

“During this period of transition, I see people who are pleased with the new freedom they have to do the things they haven’t had time for,” says Egeland. “However, others are caught completely off guard, like the stay-at- home mother who finds herself out of a job, and may experience regret, anxiety and depression.”

If married, according to Egeland, reconnecting with one’s spouse is crucial during the empty nest period.

“We’ve had some wonderful overnights in Chicago, We’ve had great road trips, and we’ve done some overseas travel,” she says.

“I’ve also done things that I never thought I’d do, like kayaking on the Chicago River.

And Paul has been to more symphonies and operas than he ever imagined in his whole life,” quips Egeland.

If single, discovering common interests with other adult friends and reconnecting with extended family also can be helpful.

While it’s common to feel a little lost during the early days of empty nesting, “once a person realizes they’re lost, they need to do the work to get found,” she says.

When the Meaney kids leave home this month, Nancy Meaney says she will lean on her best friend and husband, Tom. “We enjoy our Saturday dinner and a movie date nights, and taking walks around the neighborhood,” she says. She also plans to savor every moment she has with her grown children. And, while she may not be trailing their school bus any longer, she may need to follow her kids once again, she shares laughing, should they venture too far from home.

“It really helps if husband and wife already have common interests, perhaps travel, a sport or hobby,” she says, adding that it’s never too late to develop common interests.

"If you choose more than one space at a time you'll never get it done," she says. "Ask yourself: 'What is going to make you feel comfortable in your house?'

Wine Bourbon, beer and barbecue

am a trained sommelier, but that doesn’t mean I am strictly about wine. I am a huge fan of beer and whiskey, as well.

And in truth, all three are quite similar, particularly in the variety each offers.

That’s why when I hear people say “I don’t like white wine,” or “I don’t like craft beer,” I just tell them they haven’t yet tried the right one, and this season is the perfect time to do so.

With the summer in full swing, it’s hard to get grilling out of my head. There are some great bourbons and beers to go with what you’ve got cookin’gon the grill, and often they are available at an equally satisfying value.

Bourbon is great with barbecue, and while I adore the classic bourbons like Pappy Van Winkle, and the hard-to-find beers like Cantillon, there are some real gems that are easily found at almost nearby liquor store.

It has so much going on that it might take away from the fish or chicken, so you kick it up to beef. The citrus in this beer should cut through any meat.

It’s summer, and when the temperature rises, the parties get hotter.

Whether it’s an end of season bash or a simple summer evening with friends, there always is a great outdoor party to be had.

At Moveable Feast in Geneva, owner Monica Wallace says people still want to serve comfort foods but with an added twist. Wallace recommends making a fingerling potato salad with bacon, thinly cut fingerling potatoes and a mayo-based garlic aioli dressing. You also can enjoy a variation of typical coleslaw by using different kinds of apples. then using a Bechamel sauce, a traditional French cream sauce, and finally blending in all the noodles and cheeses.

"People are taking comfort foods and original flavors and stepping them up," Wallace says.

For refreshment, Wallace recommends offering a signature drink, something you can make your own. Hosts can create a favorite concoction by embracing the latest trend – fruit with herbs. Wallace says vodka lemonade with thyme or rosemary is a popular combination.

Fruit pies remain a popular summer dessert choice, and Wallace even suggests incorporating summer fruits in other ways at your party. You can serve easy-to-make raspberry or blackberry fools, whipped cream with a fruit puree in little plastic cups, or grill up some peaches and serve with ice cream.

And while you’re stepping up to the grill, don’t forget the vegetables and meat.

Wallace suggests smoking your meat on a charcoal grill with hickory chips for great flavor. And don’t forget the thermometer.

mini cobbler The aroma of home-baked peach cobbler is likely to stir flavor memories from years ago. And that first bite, with a little ice cream or whipped cream, is particularly potent. Make these individual desserts as special treats for your family or as a delightful finale to a small dinner party for friends.

Mini Peach Cobbler CRUST 1 /4 cup all-purpose flour 1 /4 cup cake flour 1 /4 teaspoon salt 1 /2 teaspoon baking powder 1 /8 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 1 /4 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled 1 1 /2 teaspoons shortening 1 /4 cup buttermilk (or just use store-bought biscuit dough) FILLING 1 can (21 ounces) peach pie filling 12 fresh raspberries topping mixture cinnamon, ground nutmeg, granulated sugar In a mixing bowl, combine flours, salt, baking powder, baking soda and sugar. Add butter and shortening, working these into the flour mixture just until it's crumbly. Add buttermilk and stir just until moist.

Assemble the cobblers: heat oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit. Divide the peach pie filling among four 2-inch ramekins arranged on a baking sheet. Push three raspberries into the peach mixture of each ramekin.

Cover the fruit with half-teaspoon scoops of homemade biscuit dough or 1/2-inch bits of storebought biscuit dough, leaving space between each small piece. These will bake into a charmingly uneven crust.

Sprinkle lightly with the mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until tops have risen and are golden brown.

Serve warm or at room temperature, topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

Makes 4 servings.

One area often overlooked is arts education. Arts education can cover such disciplines as acting, improvisation, music, dance and musical theater.

One common misconception is that these areas of study are only for those who want to make it their life’s work. In fact, most students never pursue a career in the arts, but the lessons and confidence learned through these classes can have a profound effect on how they approach their life and career.

At Fox Valley Rep’s Performing Arts Academy, the largest arts education program in the Fox Valley, we strive to offer an experience that allows each student to explore their own personality through acting, improv and musical theater classes.

Working from individual monologue projects to large cast productions, students get to explore their own voices while being part of a team.

In a recent Guggenheim study, it was shown that "...arts education helps develop the skills necessary to persistently and adaptively work through problems,” said Kim Kanatani, deputy director at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. “By asking students to think like artists, we are imparting 21st-century skills in encouraging them to approach problems with creativity and analytic thought rather than just recitation of facts.”

A focus on arts education is not only for children and young adults. Improvisation workshops at many major corporate businesses have become a priority to build teamwork and foster creative problem solving. A Chicago university’s engineering school integrates theater into the program as students need to learn to communicate complex ideas to the greater public.

Arts education also helps us explore what it means to be human and how our actions affect one another. It gives us an opportunity to explore fear, loss, happiness, uncertainly and joy.
