Hope for Cancer Patients and Their Families Nearly ten years ago, LivingWell Cancer Resource Center opened its doors in Geneva with a vision: to provide compassionate care that empowers, encourages, supports and provides hope to cancer patients and their families. Off season option Performance Center brings systematic training to cyclists during winter

Christine is the manager of the new Performance Center at the Bike Rack in St. Charles. Specifically she is in charge of the day-to-day aspects of the center, and also coaches weekly classes, conducts one-on-one training with athletes, and leads weekly outdoor rides. She took some time with reporter Hannah Peterson to talk about the center and all it offers for cyclists in the off-season.

PETERSON: What is offered at the new performance center?

PETERSON: What is the periodization training model?

SCHIRTZINGER: We have 12 compu-trainers in the center. A compu-trainer is an indoor trainer, that you put your bike in and hooks up to a computer. The ‘trainer’ now controls the resistance, all planned out by the ‘coach’ and gives the riders amazing feedback on their performance; the average watts or power of the product, cadence, heart rate and much more. Each trainer is specific to the athlete riding that bike, based on current ability. We love that all of our athletes, at many different levels, can ride and experience the same workout at their individualized pace!

SCHIRTZINGER: Periodization is the systematic planning of athletic training to reach ‘best possible performance’ in the most important competitive time of the year, which for athletes here is the summer.

It involves progressive intensities and recovery, starting in January and progressing through the spring so our athletes are ready to hit the pavement hard when the weather allows for outside riding.

hile enlisted in the Air Force, Janelle Fulfs would go out of her way to help people, resulting in her being awarded the Air Force commendation medal, two achievement medals, and being named Airman of the Quarter upon her departure. After serving nine years, Fulfs decided to continue helping people in her civilian pursuits.

ose Booe has served as the Director of Volunteer Services at Delnor Hospital for 14 years, and, since the merger with Central DuPage Hospital, as volunteer director for both medical campuses.

In her role, she acts as a mediator between hospital personnel, finds opportunities for volunteer services and coordinates schedules.

This saves money for the hospital and provides a sense of caring and community.

acqueline Ruiz wears many hats: entrepreneur, author, speaker, philanthropist, cancer survivor. In her role as founder and director of JJR Marketing, Inc., she has shared more than decade of marketing and public relations experience with clients that include Fortune 500 companies.

Jacqueline is the author of The Little Book of Business Secrets that Work!; The Crusaders; The Fig Factor and The Fig Factor Journal. From a very early age Jackie devoured amazing

PEG HALLADAY of ELGIN Volunteer, formerly of CASA Kane County

D

uring Peg Halladay’s 11 years as director of CASA Kane County, the program grew from 30 to more than 100 volunteers, advocating for the best interests of abused and neglected children, making it one of the leading CASA programs in the country.

Peg was responsible for public relations and developing fundraising events to support program expansion. In that time, she established an auxiliary, Friends of CASA, to aid in fundraising, as well as established the first mentor program recognizing CASA Kane as the model program of the state. Furthermore, she recruited and trained more than 50 pro bono attorneys to provide legal status as a guardian ad litem program.

Peg was the recipient of the very first Friend of the Child award given by the Aurora Exchange Club, as well as the recipient of the Liberty Bell award, given by the Kane County Bar Association, in recognition of contributions toward justice by a non lawyer in the community. Also, under Peg’s leadership, CASA received both the J.C.Penney Golden Rule Award and the Governor’s Hometown award.

Outside of CASA, Peg has worked on behalf of Habitat for Humanity and the Appalachian Service Project, volunteered at homeless shelters and soup kitchens, and has worked with youth groups and other church related efforts.

atherine Kratzer’s efforts in building Water Street Studios Art Flow community outreach program have been integral in the organization’s success. This program takes high quality arts education to the children of families who need it the most, but can least afford it. To date, the program has provided more than 150 students in excess of 2000 hours of after school art education.

Furthering the success of the program, she included an afterschool component, securing funds from two different grants given by Batavia United Way and the Boeing Employee Community Fund.

With that support, the program expanded not just at WSS, but into the community as well, with Katherine providing the students with the ability to showcase their work, at the annual Art Flow show, held in the Kane County Chronicle gallery on the second floor of WSS. As of the winter of 2014, Katherine has been working in conjunction with an English as a Second Language elementary school in Batavia in a trial arts program widening the growth of Art Flow geographically and demographically.

In 2003, Beverly brought on her current business partner Loreta Lescelius, added six like-minded team members and relocated Tranquility to its current location. In 2007, Tranquility again expanded, becoming a permanent part of the

The success of Beverly and the legacy of Tranquility is best evidenced by the numerous honors and recognitions, winning several times over the past few years in various categories at the Best of the Fox Reader’s Choice Awards.

Additionally, Tranquility gives back to the community, having participated in numerous fundraisers, including Tri City Family Services and Living Well Cancer Research Center.

hile living in New York, before she “went corporate”, Corinne Pierog worked as a college professor and an off- Broadway theater director, always striving to improve her student’s exposure to the arts. What were supposed to be student field trips through the New York City neighborhoods and communities, became the visual inspiration for her career change into community development.

In 2004, Corinne joined Sustainable Leadership Solutions, working to improve communication, group dynamics, consensus building, interaction, and collaboration among healthcare & social service professionals, educators, non-profit organizations, and businesses.

In her role as president and principal, Corinne has created opportunities for tactical alliances and leadership for various institutes and organizations, such as Roosevelt University, Chicago History Museum, Illinois Institute of Technology, World Health Organization, Alcon Mission, and Orbis. As a result of her efforts, Corinne was recognized by the USAID and the United Nations Development program, for her work in the development of values-based leadership, in a publication presented at the White House in November of 2010.

Corinne also is a community leader and volunteer for Show You Care Kane, a referendum to help more than 30,000 developmentally disabled adults obtain housing, job training, and transportation.

JULIE SIMPSON of NORTH AURORA North Aurora River District Alliance

T

he North Aurora River District Alliance, (NOARDA), has surpassed its five year mark and still is growing stronger, in large part due to Julie’s guidance as president for the club.

This club has improved the recreational space that has largely gone unused by the community of North Aurora and has recreated it as an impressive wonderland for children and families, something close to the heart of this former president of the North Aurora Mothers Club.

With various planned events enticing attendees –a summer concert series, riverfront charity walks or runs, and an evergreen decorated riverfront in celebration of the holidays – Julie has managed to embrace the environmental features of the riverfront and create a wonderful destination space for residents and the local community.

She helped to develop plans for an interactive water feature to be built adjacent to Village Hall. Partnering with local business Aquascape, they designed a 125-foot meandering stream that which now invites local children to splash, wade and climb while they are educated about water conservation and the native landscape of Illinois. This beautiful, unique feature has become a destination spot community’s residents.

oanne Spitz has lived in Batavia for over 23 years and had three children in the Batavia school district. She has a BS in Advertising and an MBA from the University of Illinois. Joanne is a community volunteer in many aspects: serving a total of seven years as Treasurer and President on her children’s school’s PTO, lending her time to TriCity Family Services, the Batavia Bicycle Commission, the Batavia Fine Arts Centre.

In October of 2013, Joanne founded CHIP IN Batavia, in reaction to learning about the more than 40 homeless children were then enrolled in Batavia Public Schools. This nonprofit organization was formed with the mission to support these and any other children in the district who find themselves in temporary housing situations, and help them while they are transitioning into more permanent homes.

Now, almost a year later, with the help of social media, organizations and individuals across the state have joined the effort, resulting in enough funds to assist every student who finds themselves in need.

In the course of one month, Joanne’s efforts brought together the Batavia Women’s Club, Rotary, Kiwanis, several churches, and more than 50 volunteers to join CHIP IN’s cause.

ngagement is nothing new for Mary Zaander. She’s been a citizen activist for many years, most recognized for her efforts on the award winning River Park of Geneva, a community-built native ecosystem park located along the banks of the Fox. This park was the result of forceful advocacy

by Mary for a solution to the town’s dilemma over a five- story condominium/hotel project.

River Park would retain public access to the waterway, while protecting the delicate state of the present ecosystem. Her educational background in environmental science gave credit to her claims and credence to her vision for the property. Mary now is president and founder of Witness Tree Native Landscapes, a company that restores public and private native ecosystems.

Together with other advocates for the land, Mary hosted forums to gather and generate ideas for the park Volunteers were organized and educated, working tirelessly on native plantings, riverbank stabilization, and wildlife corridors.

“This park is about how we relate to nature itself,” Mary said. “By building a park, we’re building a place for the community. And while they’re building this physical thing, we’re coming together as a community.”

here seems to be a new currency in the Stien Household—Pokemon Cards.

Both kids have been sucked into the world of these collectable cards with creatures with names that I can barely pronounce. It started with one pack purchased in the checkout line at Target. It satisfied my daughter’s need for me to buy her something each and every time we go to a store and seemed harmless at the time.

Before I knew it, she and Colin were both at the kitchen table studying each card carefully and asking me what each of the characters’ names were. I did my best to decipher their unusual monikers. Next thing you know, they are talking about energy, damages and fire types versus lightning types.

As in several other situations, we often bribe our kids to achieve desired behaviors. We prefer to call in “positive reinforcement.” The kids earn 28 | OCTOBER 2014 | KANE COUNTY MAGAZINE

points for good behavior, doing chores, listening and doing things without being asked. They typically get to pick what toy, game or privilege they would like for their reward.

Based on their newfound interest in Pokemon, they both requested more cards for their next reward.

After a few weeks of letting the dog out, clearing the table, getting ready for bed and school without lollygagging and limited yelling and screaming from me, they had each earned a sizeable collection of cards. Now, they have moved on to the trading stage.

Not only did they trade with some of their friends, but they also they began trading amongst themselves. Unfortunately, this usually

ended in some hurt feelings and crying since Colin hadn’t quite grasped the concept of “fair trade.”

Now that he has the hang of it, they often can be heard in the other room bartering not only for cards, but also for other items and services. For example, Colin will give her his stuffed pig and let the dog out for Maddie if she gives him her new Charizard card.

Lucky for me, I now have my own leverage in getting them to do what I want, by offering cards for good behavior, and also by taking those cards away when they misbehave. It also works for when these cards are left strewn about my kitchen table and not put back in their designated tins, binders or carrying cases (all earned through good behavior, of course.) All I

have to do is threaten to toss them in the garbage and they pick them up in a jiffy.

The cards, characters or even the game that you are supposed to play with them is beyond me. I actually have taken time to research them, simply so I can help referee their trading disagreements. It’s hard to determine what is a fair trade when you have no idea what their value is based on their damages, power, stats or abilities.

I’ve had to sift through game boards, websites and Wikipedia and I still don’t get it. In my day, we collected Garbage Pail Kids and simply hoped the card with our name wasn’t something bad like “Michelle Muck”, and made fun of kids who did have undesirable cards named after them like “Acne Amy.” I’m pretty sure the more they learn how to play the game associated with the trading cards, they also will be able to strategize in any war room – business, politics or battle.

The sliver lining is that despite the fact that I can’t differentiate between each card’s values, the kids certainly do both, for the sake of the game and their personal gain and popularity. The cards are relatively cheap, their behavior is good, we all are happy and it sure beats having to resort to the ridiculous “Elf on a Shelf” tradition to get them to behave. Somehow I think even my kids are too smart for that.

TIPS FOR NUTRITIOUS EATING During the School Year

T

he start of the school year brings lots of fun moments back into parents’ lives: hanging up art projects on the refrigerator, Friday night football games, and getting to know your children’s new friends. But it also brings back some not so great moments: having to pack school lunches, feeding your student-athlete something healthier than hotdogs and chips, and trying to keep your child from eating a dozen doughnuts at that new kid’s house.

Providing proper nutrition to your children is always a chore, but it gets a little harder during the school year, when the Super Taco Deluxe Pizza is on the menu in the school cafeteria and the ever-present vending machine tempts your youngster with its sweet and salty offerings. But you can do a few simple things to help your youngsters eat better this year.

The most important thing is to make sure your children eat a healthy breakfast. We all remember our mothers and grandmothers telling us, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Now there’s evidence to back them up.

Multiple studies have shown that those who eat a good breakfast every day: • • • •

Are generally leaner (have a lower body mass index) Exhibit better physical functioning in school Have better energy levels Don’t eat as much at lunch as other children who skip breakfast • Perform better cognitively in school What they eat for breakfast is just as important. Grabbing a Pop Tart on the way to the bus does not constitute a “healthy” breakfast. Again, multiple studies have shown that a breakfast high in protein and lower in carbohydrates (especially refined carbohydrates like sugar) results in better school performance.

The sugary kids breakfast cereals are not a good everyday breakfast choice. And even foods long thought to be “healthy” may not be so good for us: as was discussed in this Salubrity post on sugared drinks, fruit juice, even 100% fruit juice, has a lot of sugar without the fiber, so make sure your children don’t drink too much juice in the morning.

Lunches are sometimes out of your control, as kids will often eat what their friends bring or buy something at school.

So discuss with your child what are good food choices at lunchtime. Get a schedule of the school lunches in the cafeteria so you know which days have better options.

And caution your child about sharing food with others: some younger students at your child’s table may not be knowledgeable or forthcoming about their food allergies, and eating the lunch packed for your child may cause serious problems.

If you pack a lunch, try to mix it up and provide something out of the routine. Some alternatives that might work include a salad with hard-boiled eggs or strips of cold turkey or chicken on top, a BLT wrap, or ham and cheese pita. There are lots of good ideas for lunches online, many of which are easy and cheap to make. Again, the keys are to cut back on the refined carbohydrates (whole grain breads instead of the usual breads, low carb crackers instead of chips) and foods high in protein (check out alternative sources of protein such as cheese, eggs, peanut butter or quinoa).

And don’t forget the drinks. Sugary drinks are everywhere at school. Make sure your child or teen is not drinking soda, Gatorade, or other sugary drinks at lunchtime.

After school snacks are necessary for most kids (believe them when the say it’s a long day at school). Again, be wary of foods that may seem healthy, like some of the fiber bars that are actually high in sugar. Read the labels carefully. Good snack alternatives include Greek yogurt, nuts, whole fruit (not fruit juice), raw veggies with some vinaigrette or low-fat Ranch dressing, and low carb crackers with hummus.

At the very least, when you are at the grocery store, avoid buying the foods that you don’t want the kids to have. If the chips, soda, and candy are not even in the house, then packing a healthy lunch will automatically be easier.

I know many of you are imagining serving some of these options to your children and teens and can already see them rolling their eyes (or perhaps you are rolling your eyes at me right now). Trust me, I pack some of my daughters’ lunches myself. You may not be able to incorporate all of these ideas, but even trying a few is better for them than a steady diet of bologna, Xxtra Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and a Twinkie everyday.

Trick or treat Spring bulbs are sweet

B

ulbs are among the greatest bargains in the gardening world. One could invest in one hundred daffodils and hyacinths and end up with hundreds of plants in just a few years, creating a spring color wonderland. It’s hard to beat that kind of return on such a minimal investment that can bring so much joy to the landscape in spring.

There are many types of bulbs available – going far beyond the traditional standbys.

As well as tulips and daffodils, there are also fragrant hyacinths, early-blooming crocus and galanthus (snowdrops), brilliant lilies, showstopping allium or wild onion, and spreading blue scilla, among others.

To enjoy bulbs year after year, don’t cut back the leaves. Once the plant is done blooming

for the year the foliage can remain for some time, eventually yellowing and dying back.

For many, the temptation is to cut back the entire plant after bloom, but this should be avoided. If the leaves are left to grow, they will store up energy to ready themselves for another spectacular bloom the next year. Many people also are tempted to braid daffodil foliage to keep it out of the way, but this decreases light and nourishment to the leaves and keeps the bulb from gathering as much energy as it may need. For larger flowers such as tulip, daffodil, and allium, the flowers can be removed but the leaves should be left until they have yellowed. The best option for hiding sometimes unsightly bulb foliage after bloom is interplanting with perennials or groundcovers that will mask the foliage or will draw attention from it. As bulb

foliage dwindles the perennials will grow up, camouflaging bulbs’ yellowing leaves.

Any bulb can be interplanted in the landscape with perennials, groundcovers, and even shrubs. English Ivy is very attractive for interplanting with bulbs such as tulips or crocus. Daylilies are particularly attractive interplanted with daffodils because not only will they mask yellowing daffodil foliage, but they also bloom beautifully later in the year.

Bright ball-shaped alliums can be striking in front of the green background of an evergreen hedge.

When planted in masses or drifts, even groupings of three to five bulbs add welcome color after a long winter. When planted together with other bulbs they can create great color combinations. Imagine red

‘Johann Strauss’ tulips with blue scilla, or yellow daffodils with little grape hyacinths!

They also can create a succession of brilliantly colored blooms in your garden.

Early-blooming crocus or iris can give way to early or late-blooming tulips or daffodils, and alliums or lilies can provide later color.

Bulbs are the happy heralds of springtime.

Whether you prefer the subtle color of the crocus peeking out of the snow, the heady fragrance of the hyacinth, masses of scilla naturalized in a lawn, or the familiar daffodil, bulbs satisfy our need for color after a long drab winter. The Great Pumpkin Smooth and earthy, this favorite of the season is a dining gem

onsidered a symbol of a romanticized rural past, more than 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins are produced each year, with Illinois considered one of the top five pumpkinproducing states in the country.

One of the most important traditions of the autumn harvest, there are more than 40 different varieties of pumpkin grown in North America at any given time. Nearly all of the pumpkin is edible – the fleshy shell, seeds, leaves, and even the flowers – making it versatile for cooking, baking and more.

“We will be having a sort of pumpkin fest, everything pumpkin,” says Chef Alain Roby.

“We will have pumpkin cheesecake, a pumpkin caramel with ginger and orange cranberry, and various other sweet creations.”

At Cocoa Bean Fine Desserts in Geneva, Chefs Paul and Nancy Saucedo are preparing a variety of pumpkin-infused desserts. “(There are) roasted mini pumpkin crème brulee, pumpkin cheesecake bars, mini pumpkin loaves, pumpkin cheesecakes, pumpkin spice French macaroons, and pumpkin mousse individual

“But writing your own recipes is way more fun.

I tend to just place our ingredients, bought from local growers, on the counter and then ask “What can we make with this, that is different?’, or ‘What can we come up with that will taste amazing?’ and often our best ideas come from this process,” Roby says.

“You have to love this profession. Sometimes you are in the kitchen for long hours working hard, never forgetting your customers are counting on you, are waiting to see what you have next.

So you really have to enjoy every minute to succeed,” says Chef Roby.

For those of us who aren’t quite the next “top chef” there are easier alternative recipes and delicacies for you to try, courtesy of Kuiper’s Family Farm in Maple Park. This popular tourist site come the fall season provides all kinds of family fun and opportunities to make memories.

More importantly it offers over 20 acres of different pumpkin varieties.

“Most of the pumpkins we grow are cooking pumpkins, specifically sugar pumpkins and pie pumpkins, as they are smaller, but less stringy and easier to handle in the kitchen,” says Kim Kuiper, farm owner.

Also, located inside the Kuiper’s Orchard Store, is a wide variety of pumpkin related foods such as freshly baked pumpkin pies, maple pumpkin butter and pumpkin syrup, pumpkin scone mix, pumpkin spiced gourmet coffee and pumpkin tea, as well as various pumpkin bread and dessert mixes complete with a set of directions.

With all these edible possibilities for in and out of the kitchen, this harvest season is bound to be a tasty one for you and your guests!

DIRECTIONS FOR CARAMEL: 1. In a stainless steel pan, melt sugar over low heat, stirring constantly until the sugar has completely melted and turned a light golden brown color. It should have a thick syrupy consistency. Pour a small amount of the melted sugar into each ramekin. Use extreme caution as the melted sugar will be hot.

DIRECTIONS FOR FLAN:

INGREDIENTS FOR CARAMEL: ½ cup sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350F. In a bowl, mix sugar with eggs and beat well. Add the pumpkin puree then add salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg to your bowl. Scrape the inside of the vanilla bean to remove the seeds into the bowl, add evaporated milk and brandy to your ingredients and mix well until smooth.

INGREDIENTS FOR FLAN: ¾ cup sugar 5 eggs 8oz pumpkin puree ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ½ split vanilla bean (may be substituted with ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract)

1 tablespoon brandy 14 ½ ounces evaporated milk fresh whipped cream ADDITIONAL ITEMS: (6) 4 ounce ramekins Note: A bain‐marie is the baking equivalent of a double boiler. Some baked foods such as custards and souffles are placed inside a larger pan partially filled with water.

2. Pour the flan mixture into the ramekins, filling to the rim. Bake in a bainmarie for 40-50 minutes.

3. When the flan is bouncy to the touch, remove from the oven and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight.

4. When ready to serve, slide a knife around the inside perimeter of the ramekin and turn upside down to remove the pumpkin flan. Serve with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and accent with crystallized ginger*. *crystallized ginger may be found in most specialty food stores.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut top off mini pumpkin, cleaning out the inside 2. Brush inside with melted butter, and season with granulated sugar and cinnamon 3. Roast pumpkin until tender in 350 degree F oven about 15 – 20 minutes 4. Make crème brulee mixture: Combine heavy cream with ½ the sugar and vanilla bean in medium pot. Bring to a simmer.

5. Combine remaining sugar with yolks and vanilla seeds. Whisk together.

t. Charles Rotary Club and St. Charles River Corridor foundation are teaming up to host the 4th annual “Rhythm on the River” jazz event, held at the historic Arcada Theatre, a classic locale that sets the mood for the entire evening with the big, lively sounds of swing.

The event takes place 3:30 – 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, and will offer the musical stylings of two bands: Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan present a lively set of acoustic gypsy jazz, while The Fat Babies – a seven piece jazz band – will entertain with the classic styles of the 1920s and 30s.

Teaming up allows everyone involved to succeed in their goals – giving something back to the St. Charles community.

“This is music that makes you want to get up and dance, and I think people are going to be blown away by the talent on the stage,” says Richard Southorn, fall concert committee chairman for the River Corridor Foundation.

(And there is no need to worry about the weather - The House Pub will welcome the band, dancers, and the public inside in the event of rain.)

“I believe this is fundraising at its best: people getting to enjoy a great concert and help their community at the same time,” says Southorn.

What started as a concept to raise some money for two good causes has turned into both organizations largest annual fundraiser.

“This is our fourth year working together, and we hope this partnership will continue long into the future,” says Southorn. To date, the annual event has helped to raise more than $100,000 by both groups, to be used for improvements along the Fox River corridor and as local area scholarships.

“While we have different charters, it is our common appreciation for St. Charles that brings us together,” says Southorn. “We have found that when our groups collaborate, we are able to do something much bigger than either organization could do alone.”

Renovations Underway at Anderson Animal Shelter

Featured Sponsor: DePaw University Canine Campus The 40-year-old Anderson Animal Shelter building, located at 1000 South La Fox, in South Elgin, is getting a shelter makeover thanks to a generous donation from Marco and Patricia Muscarello, on behalf of the Ivar and Ruth Anderson Animal Anti-Cruelty Foundation. The renovation of the animal shelter and humane society began in early September and will span several weeks. As part of the renovation, new caging will be installed throughout the dog and cat adoption areas, the reception and non-public areas of the shelter will receive facelifts, a handicap ramp will be created, parking lot expanded and more.

The makeover is being made possible through several sources. In addition to the generosity of the Muscarellos, the Shelter’s Board of Directors has approved the use of some of the organization’s own investments. In addition, a number of foundations and organizations with an animal welfare emphasis have stepped forward to help support however, more support is needed. If area residents or businesses would like to support the renovation, monetary donations of all levels are appreciated. There is also a number of naming or sponsorship opportunities still available for specific areas of the shelter which offers donors a chance to be recognized, honor a loved one and more. The building at Anderson Animal Shelter has many uses and serves its departments, staff and volunteers well. Not only is it used as a temporary home for animals in need, but it is also the site of a number of youth programs, dog training classes and more. A redesign and renovation of the building is extremely needed and highly anticipated by many.

According to Executive Director Beth Drake, “The building is outdated. Our plumbing was installed when the shelter was first built and has reached the end of its life expectancy. Our parking lot is too small to accommodate all our shelter visitors. Most importantly, our animal caging is outdated.”

Research and advances in animal welfare and housing are driving some of the changes planned. Currently, the cats are housed in small, stainless steel cages and dogs are housed in chain link kennels. “This type of caging is not ideal for shelter animals,” said Drake. “It increases their stress and leads to emotional

The shelter redesign will incorporate creative housing solutions designed to reduce animal stress. Our adoptable cats will be housed with other cats in cat colonies, or individually in large “kitty condos” with perching and sleeping ledges, allowing them to feel more at home.

Current shelter residents have been relocated to a Temporary Adoption Location in Batavia at 122 West Wilson Street or have been placed in foster homes locally. “The community has been extremely supportive of our efforts,” said Jon Koffenberger, Animal Care Manager. “Over 100 foster families are being used to care for our current kittens, cats, puppies and dogs. They are all doing an incredible job and we can’t thank them enough.”

The shelter plans to host a grand reopening which the public is invited to attend once the renovation is complete and the residents are settled in their new environment. Be sure to watch the shelter’s website and Facebook Page for details.

Fall at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center is the perfect time for volunteers to pitch in to help park district staff remove non-native plants that can clog prairies and fields, collect seeds used in restoration work, and generally help to return the land to an ecologically sound state.

From youth to seniors, there are activities suitable for all ages and abilities. Seed Harvesting Day on October 4 at Otter Creek Bend Wetland Park is like a treasure hunt for native plants, as volunteers venture out to gather seeds that will be added to the park district’s inventory of native plant material. At “Make A Difference Day” on October 25, individuals, families and community groups can have fun while participating in the kind of rewarding opportunities that keep our parks looking beautiful, healthy and flourishing.

And for folks who want a little more adventure in their outdoor activities, the second annual “Gone Squatchin’” program takes place on October 18.

The legendary ape-man may decide to make the woods at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center its home for the night. Squatch watchers will be trained to look for clues to the giant’s existence, such as footprints (big ones!) and where he makes his nest (pretty much wherever he wants to!).
