HANDS ON Esteemed local sculptor Guy Bellaver keeps turning heads

Guy Bellaver of St. Charles is the creator of many sculptures around and beyond Kane County. A glance at his vast online portfolio (www.bellaverstudios.com) will have you nodding your head in recognition. Perhaps you pass one of his sculptures on a daily basis and didn’t realize that the artist might also be your neighbor.

“In the 40 years that I have been a professional sculptor, I have worked in many media, including stone, wood, fiberglass, and metal. My work is eclectic, but shares a theme or style that is both organic and technical. Today, it is a bit less about shapes and more about energy. ” A good example of this is Bellaver’s Quarks Series.

-Continued from page 7 Bellaver explains, “I always enjoyed art classes as a kid, but I never really studied it until after I got my bachelor’s degree in economics.” Sound like a stretch? Like many folks, he had some freedom with elective coursework and he chose art. He continued, “I just took courses that were interesting to me, along with a lot of trial and error.”

That trial and error encompassed regular life.

What began as an interest as a child didn’t blossom into an ardent passion until after the military, college, and a couple of jobs in business settings.

“I’ve pursued graduate studies in art at the master’s level at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, and Northern Illinois University, as well as The School of the Art Institute in Chicago.”

Although Bellaver’s continued education has been focused, his sculpting is much more versatile. You’ll see wall hanging wood carvings of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, followed by large, colorful geometric designs structured of metal and glass. Bellaver says his sculpting has evolved over time.

“If I’m doing a spec piece, [the inspiration] may come from something I’ve seen or heard. These sculptures are about energy, and are inspired

by Fermilab. The collision of the protons and antiprotons can only be seen when captured by a very high resolution camera. I took a tour of Fermilab almost 10 years ago, and those images are the inspiration for the Quarks Series, which explores mass that is exploding and creating disintegrating arcs. The fiberglass or bronze segments represent mass, and the rod represents that mass leaving one area, and exploding into another. Each sculpture in the series continues my exploration of the relationship of positive to negative space, and the energy of their interaction.”

“The aging of the bronze produces a beautiful patina,” he says. Patina is the natural aging of stone or various metals that causes it to tarnish and make other colors. The patina is why the copper Statue of Liberty is green. However, he explained that just like the progression of bronze his preferred media has also changed. “When I first started sculpting almost everything that I did was stone.”

Bellaver confessed that his favorite kinds of projects are public art, adding he loves monumental pieces, “because of the ‘wow’ factor.”

So what’s on the horizon for Bellaver?

“Sometime this spring, we’ll be dedicating my most recent sculpture - Reflections - a community sculpture project honoring volunteerism, as exemplified by Max and Doris Hunt.”

“This project is very meaningful to me because Max Hunt [who passed away in 2007] was one of the first people I met when we moved to St. Charles. Jazz Singer Young vocalist takes songs from old school to new age

Most people are guilty of singing in the shower and jamming out in the car, but for some singers like Alyssa Allgood, it was the start of a career.

Allgood grew up listening to blues and jazz (courtesy of her parents) and once she turned 12, she knew jazz was something she wanted to pursue at a higher level.

“I think it’s important to arrange and compose,” she says. “It’s important to add your own personal touch. Some songs are so beautiful, but it’s nice to freshen it up and make it a unique and fun challenge.”

“[Jazz] is more intellectual and it’s more of a sophisticated art form,” Allgood says. “I love the improvisation of the art.”

The recent college graduate is just beginning her career journey with jazz, but she has a bright future ahead of her on the stage.

THE BEGINNING

Singers all have the capability to put their spin on a song, but songwriting and arranging give Allgood the freedom to make each song her own.

Allgood released her five-song album “Lady Bird” in January, which features one original song as well as four arrangements of beloved jazz Allgood has also taken to the stage around the classics.

“What I found was that I really, really just love the music I’m singing,” Allgood says. “It makes it really easy to want to work at it and get better.”

The album features a unique take on jazz – instead of the typical bass often found in jazz music, she has an organist covering the jazz lines.

Allgood started singing in elementary school, turned to jazz in junior high and started attending North Central’s legendary Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp at age 12.

One year at jazz camp turned into two, and that turned into an annual event until Allgood turned 18. Training under Janice Borla continued four more years when Allgood opted to attend North Central College to major in jazz studies and communications. Jazz drummer and adjunct faculty member Jack Mouse was also a huge influence on her craft while she was in college, Allgood attests.

“I’ve known [Janice Borla and Jack Mouse] since I was 12 and they really helped expose me to the music, how it works, what it should look like and sound like, as well as what goes into being a professional jazz musician,” Allgood explains. “I went to study at North Central because of them.”

While some may be vocally inclined, there are other aspects to singing that don’t come naturally. Standing, breathing and reading music all are key aspects in vocal performance that sometimes go overlooked and their importance is underestimated. “Everyone listens to music and can sing along with what’s on the radio, but that doesn’t mean they know anything about the music,� Allgood says. “I really want to develop students into good musicians and help educate them.

Singing is universal, but each singer is individual and Allgood likes to create a unique class to help develop particular skills for each student. “I have all different levels of students and I like to cater my lessons to what they understand and what they can do,� Allgood adds. “Your instrument is literally in your own body, so when you’re singing, you’re putting yourself out there to the full extreme. It’s scary.�

When it comes down to it, singing properly takes work, and vocal teachers are there to help both inexperienced and experienced singers put the best product out there – no matter how long it takes. “We live in a world where we want instant gratification,� Allgood says. “With music, it’s something you have to work at over a long period.�

Love of the Stage for every age

Tell us a little about the beginning of Vero Voce.

In 2001, my wife, Dawn Harkins, who has a degree in music and has performed professionally for a number of years, began giving voice and piano instruction from our home. Eventually, she had so many students that we felt it was better to have a business location so we started looking for space.

We found a 7,000 square foot area that not only offered studio space but also room for a theater. This gave us the opportunity to create a fully functional school of performing arts. We moved into the space in 2012, and now have a black box theater and seven studios for instruments and voice. Dawn is the school’s owner and Artistic Director.

We serve anyone from age five, through adult.

Our oldest student is 78 years old. Once people start lessons, they keep going. Unlike sports, it’s something you can continue your entire life.

What types of music instruction does Vero Voce offer?

Do your theater performances feature Vero Voce students?

We have all kinds. Voice and piano are our most popular, but we also offer instruction for strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion.

Our instructors all have music degrees and many of them are performing professionals with chorales and groups such as the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.

Dennis Brown, Vice President and Theater Director, and a working actor for more than 40 years, spoke with feature writer Elizabeth Harmon about the school’s philosophy, upcoming camp sessions and the how arts programs benefit the community at large.

Tell us about your performance series.

We have 14 productions each season, seven Mainstage, and seven Young Performers’ series. The performances are open to the public and tickets can be purchased on our website. In April and May, our Mainstage production is a Murder Mystery Dinner, we’ll be performing Willy Wonka, Junior, in May as part of our Young Performers series. In May and June is a Mainstage production of Proof, a play by David Auburn.

Whom do you serve?

Located near downtown St. Charles, Vero Voce Theater and School of Performing Arts offers a variety of classes and private instruction in music and theater, as well as a full theater season with productions for adults and children.

Our Writer’s Workshops are taught by David Rodriguez, who has written a number of shows, several of which we have performed here. We have strong ties with the St. Charles Public Library and recently held a program called “From Page to Stage,” where we take things the participants have written, whether they’re plays, poetry or prose, and perform them onstage. We’re very interested in helping people in whatever their performance art is.

Our music and voice lessons tend to be private, so our students can get individualized attention, but other classes work better in a group setting, such as choral music and theory. The best way to teach a subject is the way we teach it. We also have the ability to offer private lessons over Skype.

Tell us about Vero Voce’s theater programs.

Our Theatrical Artistic Director David Rodriguez is an experienced actor, instructor and playwright. He and I collaborate on theater classes and developing programming for our performance seasons.

Our theater classes are for the same age range as our music classes, age five through adults and cover Scene Study, Auditions, Improv, Character Development, and Musical Theater audition coaching. Most of these are done in groups, so students learn to perform with others, but we also have private coaching.

Because we teach theater, we certainly do have some who audition for our productions, but we believe in having people audition for a show, not just allotting someone time onstage because they’ve been students. Our objective is to give our audience a good show.

Some of our instructors appear in our shows.

Our upcoming Young Performers series production of Willy Wonka includes our faculty in leading adult roles. Our objective is to give great instruction and one of the best methods is to show them how to do it. Not that we don’t enjoy it immensely ourselves.

Do you have special programs happening during the summer?

Our camp series offers theater programs for children ages 4 to 5 (Little Stars Shine!), grades 1-3 (Starlets Shine!), and grades 4-8 (Starshine!), as well as a high school advance audition workshop. Session 1 begins Monday, June 8 for our Little Stars and Starshine programs and Monday, June 15 for Starlets Shine. Session 2 starts Monday July 6 for Little Stars and Starshine, and Monday, July 13 for Starlets Shine. The high school audition workshop begins Monday, July 20.

And it just kind of clicked for me. And I’ve always loved strong female characters.

SCHELKOPF: “The Family Girl” has received some good reviews. That must please you. Does that give you gratification?

There hasn’t been a strong female character that is an assassin by choice, not driven by revenge. She made the choice to follow in her father’s footsteps and become an assassin.

BRANKIN: It makes me realize that it was a long road, but it was worth it. And it’s helping me to move forward on my second book.

She knew about the lifestyle. She knew what it was, and she made that choice.

I’m pleasantly surprised that the book also appeals to men as well. It’s not just for women. Guys like it, too. They like the characters. And they love all the toys.

SCHELKOPF: I understand you have started writing the second book.

BRANKIN: “The Family Girl” came out in ERIC SCHELKOPF: I understand that you October. And as soon as the book came out, were born in Russia.

Batavia resident Katherine Brankin decided to make her first book a thriller.

“The Family Girl” tells the story of assassin Catalina Bennett, who is following in the footsteps of her father, a retired assassin. The book is the first installment in a trilogy that Brankin is writing.

“The Family Girl” is available in the United States as an ebook on Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks, Google Play, Barnes & Noble and Blio.

SCHELKOPF: How long have you been thinking about writing this book?

BRANKIN: I wrote it in chunks. It came in bursts. And it all kind of pieced together.

Schelkopf: The fact that you were born in Russia, does that have anything to do with the subject matter?

BRANKIN: Not really. But I grew up on fabulous Russian literature.

I grew up with a book in my hand. I loved a good story, and I love a story where you just dive into it, and you disappear into that world.

And I also love a story with action that drives you, and that you can picture in your head.

When I write, everything plays out in my mind as a movie.

SCHELKOPF: So, you hope that your readers can really visualize what is happening?

BRANKIN: Yes. I’m a highly visual person, and I [visualize] everything. And I also realize that a lot of people don’t read as much any more. So, I wanted to bring the excitement of television and film back into reading by creating vivid characters, I wanted them to go along and get excited,

SCHELKOPF: In sitting down to write“The Family Girl,” did the words come pretty easily?

BRANKIN: Yes. I write, I guess, the same way they shoot movies, out of sequence. I have a loose idea of the overall story, and then I put it all together in pieces.

I write at really weird times. I don’t sit down in the morning and say, “Today, I’m going to write so many words.” Sometimes I write in my car, sometimes I write when I’m waiting to pick up my 8-year-old son, Danny, from H.C. Storm Elementary School. I’ve written dialogue and plot points on the backs of receipts.

SCHELKOPF: This is your first book. Do you have any advice for people thinking of writing a book?

BRANKIN: I tell everybody to keep on writing and don’t give up. My motto is that good things come to people who wait.

As long as you believe and edit a lot, it will happen.

2001 S. Batavia Avenue The Fabyan Villa was the home of Colonel George and Nelle Fabyan from 1905-1939. Riverbank, the name they bestowed upon their property, was initially a country retreat from their home in Chicago. They hired Frank Lloyd Wright in 1907 to enlarge and re-model the existing farmhouse and shortly thereafter took up permanent residence, according to Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. The home is surrounded by an expansive and tranquil Japanese garden, installed by the family in 1910. ROOTED IN COMMUNITY Wasco Nursery and Garden Center celebrates 90 years

Just beyond the west end of St Charles, where the hustle and bustle of the Tri-Cities gives way to the expanse of country living, you’ll discover Wasco Nursery. Not your “garden variety” greenhouse, Wasco Nursery boasts an expansive acreage and 90 years of service to the surrounding communities.

Originally owned by local farmer Lynn Jay, Wasco Nursery took root when Jay began growing hardy trees for nearby families. As the years went on, acquisition of farmland continued to expand operations for the nursery, which continues to grow much of its own products right here in Kane County. Today, Wasco Nursery consists of 3 farms totaling nearly 160 acres, a 10-acre retail garden center, landscape design and installation services, a water gardening department, as well as a garden gift shop that is open year round.

Operated as a family business for several generations, Wasco Nursery is now under the watchful eye of owner and president Matt Zerby, who has worked for the family for more than two decades.

“I’m an outdoorsman,” says Zerby. “I love being outside and enjoying God’s creation. My profession allows me to help others experience some of that same enjoyment by enhancing the community and our customer’s outdoor living environments.”

It’s a passion Zerby has followed for most of his life, starting with a lawn mowing and landscaping business when he was 12 years old.

And while he studied business, not horticulture in college, Zerby attests that his training has been hands-on, taking place right where he loves to be, outside.

“I started working for Wasco Nursery and Bob Jay Jr., when I was 14 years old,” he recalls. I read a ton of books and had a lot of hands on learning experiences in the nursery; working in the greenhouse with Joann Jay, taking plant cuttings

From shade trees to evergreen trees, Wasco Nursery grows all of the familiar, time-tested trees, as well as the best new introductions. In fact, the expertise that helped mold Zerby is also what he most credits for the ongoing success of the business.

“We grow a lot of what we sell in our 140 acre nursery and we’ve been doing it for 90 years,” he says. “Our staff members are product experts – you don’t find experience like that at a big box store or even at other independent garden centers.”

An extensive inventory of shrubs, vines, ground covers, perennials, ferns and ornamental grasses fill the 10-acre garden center. Patrons can come in and gain the design expertise of a staff member, or bring a personal plant list to the nursery, and you’ll likely find what you’re looking for.

“We have a bigger selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, herbs and vegetables than any other garden center in northern Illinois,” says Zerby.

The Wasco staff will take your choices, help you design your yard’s landscaping, and even come out and plant the items. If you’re a DIY gardener, weekly delivery is available to some 1,200 square miles of the greater Chicago area.

Through college I took some agriculture and horticulture classes, I graduated with a bachelors in business with a concentration in operations management.

How long have you been at Wasco?

I started in 2006 doing mulch deliveries and worked my way up to Landscape Foreman. I left at the end of the season in 2012 and came back in February 2014 as Customer Service Coordinator.

What’s most of your day made up of?

Most of my day consists of scheduling and contacting customers to let them know when we are coming. Also, assisting customers in the sales yard. In the off-season, I work on field inventory and in the shop.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

I really enjoy seeing the finished product when we complete a job, because of how a yard can be transformed. Also, being able to get outside frequently is a plus, I have always enjoyed working outdoors.

What do you most want our readers to know about the products and services at Wasco?

I want everyone to know that we pride ourselves in quality, from the quality of our plant material to the quality of our work. I also want the customers to be satisfied in the product and services they receive.

What’s your training/background in landscape design?

I have a degree in Agriculture/Horticulture from Illinois State University. I have been a landscape designer for 21 years in the Fox Valley area. I am also a Certified Illinois Nursery Professional with special certification in Woody Plants and Perennials.

What’s most of your day made up of?

Every day is totally different for me. Some days I may be out visiting clients about their landscapes.

On other days, I spend quite a bit of time in the office designing gardens, answering questions about plants and plant care and helping past customers with any questions they have about their gardens. I often walk the sales yard at the Nursery to see all the plant material to find inspiration for my designs. I also speak to garden clubs, local organizations, and hold seminars educating customers about landscape topics.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Working with homeowners to make their yards beautiful, functional, and enjoyable! The landscape is more than just grass and a few trees – it’s an extension of your home. I enjoy finding unique plants that can set your yard apart from others.

What do you most want our readers to know about landscape design services at Wasco?

Landscape design is a very personal process and I take my time with each client’s yard to ensure they have a design that they will fall in love with. I listen to the client and provide them with a working design that they can implement at their own pace.

Each plant is thoughtfully placed, each garden is planned for seasonal color, and I always provide maintenance tips and important information that will help the client succeed in the future as the plants grow. What’s your training/ background?

My background in this green industry started when I was 49 years old. I decided I wanted to get into a different field and I was attracted because of my floral design background.

(I have an art background and went to the Art Institute of Chicago, and I also had a lot of sales experience.) I decided to make the change by the time I was 50. So I packed up my artwork and went into a landscape company in Geneva. The owner was nice enough to listen to me, give me great advice and here I am 18 years later. I have worked at some great places, taken classes ended up at my dream job.

What’s most of your day made up of?

I’m basically a perennial buyer, also buy pottery, gift items, and the fabulous Artisan bird houses that we carry. I’m also a designer and love to work with customers that come in and are looking for the help I once needed.

I also do the displays inside and outside the office and greenhouse. The wonderful part about working here is your able to wear all kinds of hats and what you learn is immeasurable.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

Getting up every morning and looking forward to going to work and doing the things I love doing. I feel very blessed.

AVOID ENTERTAINING FAUX PAS When it comes to entertaining, having the right ambience will help to set the tone for your event. In doing so, there are multiple factors to consider.

LIGHTING If you’re having a dinner party, bright lights are never appropriate. Consider having your lights placed on a dimmer and turned down or strategically place battery-powered candles throughout the space. The dim lighting during your event will help to create a more comfortable and cozy feeling for your guests.

Remember, nobody likes to eat under a spotlight!

SEATING It is critical to have the appropriate amount and type of seating when entertaining. If you are looking to lounge while have friends over for cocktails and appetizers, make sure to have seating that is comfortable, a little larger in stature, and offers the ability to snuggle up and

become cozy. Multiple types of seating should also be considered as well including leather and fabric along with seats that hold one or two individuals. Remember, variety is the spice of life.

When hosting a dinner party, you want to make sure that individuals are able to sit for longer periods of time. Also remember, it is not appropriate to squeeze extra chairs into your seating chart. A good rule of thumb is to allow a minimum of 24 inches per individual at the dinner table. This means a 72-inch long table would allow three people on each side along with one person at the head of each end for a total of eight people. Contrasting head chairs is a great way to designate the hosts chairs from the guest chairs. www.kcchronicle.com/magazine

LINENS, FABRICS AND LEATHERS Whether your tablecloths, napkins, or even the furniture you’re using, make sure the patterns are not over-the-top. It’s best to have fabrics that are pleasing to the eye, and balanced within a space. When entertaining, we must not forget that flow is still important in your rooms design.

CONVENIENCE Make sure when your guests arrive, there is space for them to put their jackets, be it a closet or hall tree. Additionally, if your guests take off their shoes, make sure you have an accent chair that allows them to sit. It is considered rude, and quite frankly tacky to have your guests sit on the stairs or floor to put their shoes back on.

Additionally, consider adding an indoor/ outdoor area rug in your foyer. These rugs are designed to withstand all the harsh elements Mother Nature creates for us while still looking beautiful. Indoor/outdoor rugs also are very easy to maintain. Many require just a light rinse with the garden hose to clean and about an hour of time in the sunlight to dry.

As boomers age, families turn to in-law suites

he combined factors of aging baby boomers, longer life expectancies and seniors increasingly wanting to maintain their independence, has led many families to make room for Mom and Pop within their own family homes.

“Truthfully, many people want their parents to come and live with them,” said Bob McDowell.

The president and CEO of McDowell Remodeling in St. Charles said that he is seeing increased interest in the idea of in-iaw suites. “There are many young people trying to bring their parents into their homes. “ The trend seems to be driven by several factors including longer life expectancies and seniors wanting to maintain as much independence as they’re able. Economics, Bob said, is an 38 | APRIL 2015 | KANE COUNTY MAGAZINE

important consideration. “Assisted living is extremely expensive. It can be $4000 or more per month in an assistive living facility. I’m not suggesting that’s not a good price but for those kinds of dollars, many can bring their aging parents into their home and save money, while the family can actually become much stronger. “

“An in-law suite can be an economical way to be with your family and get on with the next phase of your life,” said Sue McDowell, company coowner, CFO and marketing manager.

A better scenario, Sue suggests, is a renovation that the company recently designed, starting with ideal space and layout.

s I prepare these tips for the April readers, the frozen snow is still nearly a foot deep, March Madness is inescapable, and the first 50-degree day is in the forecast. (That first 50 degree day somehow feels like 85 and I am also preparing my “it’s not warm enough for shorts” speech for my soon to be 15 year old.) With all of April’s excitement and temptation to get back outdoors, there are a few small actions in which you can invest your time that can pay big dividends.

Understanding what your sump pump does is key to preventing major disasters. By design, water is brought inside the home and collected in a reservoir, then pumped back outside. In a heavy rain this pump will run every minute or two, removing 30- 50 gallons at a time. A good quality sump pump can remove 3,300 gallons per hour- for good reason! So what happens when it doesn’t work for an hour on the wrong day? Does your sump pump have a battery back-up?

Get to know your sump pump. Look in the dark pit with a flashlight, does it look like it is up to the task? Next, find out where that discharge pipe actually goes on the outside. Just like your gutter downspouts, this water should be pushed 8-10 feet away from the house. Next, fill the pit with water so the pump can exercise. Listen to your pump… is it growly and loud? Does it thump hard when it shuts off? These are signs of wear, and are likely trying to tell you something.

Always test your hose bibs before actually using them. Previously frozen pipes do not leak inside until you turn them on. Put a hose and sprayer on each spigot and turn it on while a friend is inside listening for water. Turn the sprayer on and off to create back pressure.

Jewelry Faire Moves to City of St. Charles RiverFest

The City of St. Charles RiverFest has announced the addition of Anderson Animal Shelter’s “Digging for Treasure” Jewelry Faire to the 2015 festival. What’s happening to our girls?

W

hen I think back to my childhood girlfriends in grade school, I have happy memories of playing board games, sleepovers, sharing stories and laughing. Of course, there were the occasional hurt feelings when someone was left out or someone talked behind your back. Girls being “mean” to one another is not a new phenomenon. However, it seems as if it has been taken to a whole new level.

Fast forward to the present and I am a therapist and mother of three girls, listening to the way very young girls are treating each other. Professionals refer to “mean” behavior as relational aggression. It consists of such behaviors as manipulation, name calling, exclusion, rumor spreading and holding grudges, to name a few.

Why is this behavior trickling down to four, five and six year olds? Experts think there are a variety of reasons.

First, kids mimic the larger culture. Mean girl behavior can be observed on all sorts of media at an earlier age.

In addition, children are “growing up” at a faster pace and younger age. Girls as young as kindergarten want cell phones and concert tickets… and not to Sesame Street Live! There also has been a shift in play to more controlled environments and technological gadgets, leaving kids less time to socialize and work things out on their own. Sometimes, it’s the moms themselves that contribute to the behavior. Some are too quick to take their daughter’s side without fully considering their own daughter’s behavior.

reproductive challenges Many fertility questions can be answered with awareness, simple tests

or those experiencing infertility, trying to conceive can be a heartbreaking journey.

Roughly 15 percent of all couple will have infertility, which equals roughly 7.8 million people. Experts advise that if a woman under 35 years old has been trying to conceive for one year without success, she should consult an expert. For a woman over 35-years-old, that time decreases to six months.

An initial consult with Center for Reproductive Health in Geneva lasts roughly 45 minutes to one hour. It includes a complete history of the couple’s infertility issues, as well as a discussion about common causes for infertility, as well as a discussion of the process and rationale for each infertility test. Treatment options and success rates may also be discussed.

“I believe the care patients receive at the Center for Reproductive Health is dramatically different than other practices,” said Scott Springer, medical director, board certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. “I am the only physician. All procedures and everything related HEALTH & WELLNESS

to IVF are not only under my direct supervision, but I perform all the procedures. I know each of my patients by name.”

Springer said he and the center’s nurses form intimate and close relationships, spending as much time on counseling as treating.

All diagnostic testing is done at Center for Reproductive Health’s offices, including labs, ultrasounds, minor diagnostic procedures, as well as intrauterine inseminations. In-vitro fertilization can also be done at the offices.

“We look at a number of different areas before determining the best plan for each patient,” Springer said. “Obviously, this is a very individual decision. My primary focus is to determine whether the couple has a condition which is going to respond to a more conservative treatment or a condition in which conservative treatment is very unlikely to work and would be wasting valuable time.”

While the average time to get a new patient pregnant is roughly six months, Springer said it can range anywhere from one month to two www.kcchronicle.com/magazine

However, he said it was important to acknowledge that nobody can get everybody pregnant.

“Most importantly, we do everything within reason to try, keeping our patients’ financial and emotional status uppermost in our minds,” Springer said. “Some of our most difficult situations are deciding when further treatment is not going to work.”

Springer advised it is important women are aware “there is a fertility time clock and it is more than a cliché. It is a reality.” While the time clock is different for each person, he said women must be aware that there will come a time when there is simply no treatment option.

Springer said it is important to take great care in consideration of balancing career and social responsibilities with the timing for starting a family.

Katherine Kratzer helps Water St. Studios reach into the community

F

or Katherine Kratzer, art isn’t merely a project or something to hang on the wall. Rather it is a way to connect with the community, to create something for the enjoyment and to build relationships with those around you.

Kratzer led the community outreach initiative at Water Street Studios in downtown Batavia.

From art classes at a summer camp she has built the Art Flow Arts Community Outreach Program, providing art to students and adults throughout the community. Since the program began in 2011 more than 200 students have participated in the after school arts education.

“We want to make art the norm in everyday life,” Kratzer said.

She started Art Flow with the young residents of the Batavia Apartments, with the aim to help students who might not be able to afford additional arts programming. The arts program began as a part of the location’s summer camp program.

She began the initiative with a vision, students and limited funding. Through the years she has obtained grants and additional funding, coordinated art shows and expanded the classes to include programming for elementary-age students and teens. She brings in professional artists to share their talents and work with students, and in turn the students have access to art mediums they might not otherwise try in their normal school environment.

Kratzer said she has seen the young students flourish. The boys and girls in the classes have found an interest and enjoyment and often tell her how they look forward to the programs and how making art makes them happy.

“We provide a really safe, caring environment,”

she said. “We are giving the kids a sense of belonging to a group, which a lot of them don’t have.”

Teaching art has become an extension of Kratzer’s love of art. After starting a career in communications for a professional medical organization, she began taking art classes for enjoyment and discovered a passion for metalsmithing. Friend and fellow artist Rita Grendze of Geneva said Kratzer’s handcrafted jewelry is among some of her favorite pieces.

“Her jewelry is absolutely exquisite,” Grendze said.

After her children were born Kratzer left the full-time business world and later began work as a substitute teacher working with students in special education. Little did she realize years later she would merge her love of art, teaching and her skills in communications through her work with Art Flow and Water Street Studios.

From the Art Flow program in summer camp Kratzer built a year-round after school art program. Grendze said providing art is more than teaching students about different mediums and making projects. In art students can learn to see the world from different perspectives and learn how to collaborate.

“The students may take something they learn from Katherine or another teacher and it may help them down the road to be better problem solvers,” Grendze said.

The students’ work from Art Flow is displayed in the annual show in the Kane County Chronicle Gallery on the second floor of Water Street Studios.

Jim Kirkhoff, co-founder of Water Street Studios said Kratzer has passion and drive, to keep moving and reaching out to others. In 2012 Kratzer used a grant to bring Art Flow to women

in need, providing programs at Lazarus House, a housing shelter in St. Charles and Mutual Ground, a domestic violence shelter in Aurora.

“A big part of art activities is that it gives people a chance to step away from the problems of the world,” Kratzer said.

She has expanded Art Flow to provide programs at HC Storm Elementary School in Batavia.

This summer she is coordinating an outdoor mosaic art installation at the elementary school that will bring artists, parents, members of the community as well as teachers and students together in the production.

“This is community art building at its best,” Kratzer said.

Strengthening Families through Awareness April is National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month, a time to recognize that everyone can play a part in promoting the safety and well-being of the children in our communities. CASA Kane County is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children within the Juvenile Court system. Each year the organization hosts an awareness event in April that draws attention to the issue of child abuse and neglect.

This annual event called Hands Around the Courthouse (HATCH), will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Noon in the Historic Courthouse Lobby located at 100 S. Third Street in Geneva, Illinois. The ceremony is open to the public and consists of a brief presentation and then joining of hands around the courthouse for a moment of silence to acknowledge the children in our community and those in Illinois who have been victims of abuse or neglect.

Throughout the month of April, CASA Kane County also draws awareness to this issue by displaying blue pinwheels on the courthouse lawn, representing every child the agency served in the previous year. Last year, 587 children were victims of abuse or neglect, removed from

their homes and entered into the foster care system. Fortunately we receive an immense amount of community support from caring and committed individuals who become specially trained to advocate for every child that we serve.

EVENTS In Kane County APRIL 5 | MINIATURE PAINTING ARTIST FEATURED AT THE HOLMSTAD Sunday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., at The Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia The Holmstad Town Center Gallery will feature the works of award-winning miniature painting artist Edward Cook through April 20. A Batavia resident, Cook is a self-taught artist who specializes in miniature paintings, which is considered a fine art specialty. His acrylic paintings typically measure 4.75” x 2.75” and tend to reflect his love of nature. APRIL 6 | HABITAT WORKDAY Monday, 1 p.m. at Fermilab Natural Areas, Kirk and Batavia roads, Batavia No experience required, but dress for the weather and outdoor work. In the winter we are processing native seed mixes and removing invasive woody plants such as honeysuckle, buckthorn, Autumn olive, and Japanese barberry. In the spring we are pulling garlic mustard and collecting seed from spring wildflowers. We move all over the Fermilab campus as a strike team, helping to restore important, high-quality natural areas. All tools and safety equipment provided. Simply bring a photo ID to show the Fermilab security guard at the entrance.

St. Charles Oil Stick/Mixed Media

J

anet Wickham, St. Charles resident and award-winning artist, incorporates her life experiences of frequent moves to different parts of the country into her paintings. She regards these experiences as a “oneness of the journey of life.”

Oil stick has been Janet’s preferred medium for many years, but she also creates detailed ink compositions and mixed-media paintings. Most of her work is inspired by organic elements found in

nature, so it’s fitting that her most recent pieces incorporate the use of natural tree bark.

Janet received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of West Florida with an interdisciplinary in art, music and philosophy and a minor in psychology.

She enhanced her artistic skill through advanced instruction at The Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles, and customized independent study at Elgin Community College.
