HISTORIC HABITS 402 FRANKLIN ST., GENEVA

For Angel and David Warner, the adventure of owning their historic home on Franklin Street in downtown Geneva wasn’t their first rodeo.

They’d already experienced the challenges and rewards of owning a piece of history through prior residences. Previously the couple lived in an old farmhouse in Sugar Grove, where they raised their seven children, and they lived in an older home in Batavia as well. Raising a young family in an older home meant the couple often tackled rehab and renovation projects themselves, which allowed them to save money and, when they sold the homes, make some of that money back.

When most of their children had moved on to their own homes they would set their sights on the 1925 Dutch colonial in Geneva’s historic district.

“This was a dream home,” Angel says. “You could tell the house was very well built, the structure was very good, but it needed everything new,” she said.

The couple and their youngest daughter opted to live in a rental during the nearly 10-month renovation project, when a bulk of the work was completed by

“It’s an old home, but it’s mechanically new,” she says.

Angel said she loves the simple style of the home, the floor plan and the large windows, which bring in lots of sunlight.

She also enjoys the special touches in the home, from the staircase to the beautiful mantel above the fireplace.

Through Geneva’s historic preservation and archives the couple has been able to learn more about their home and even found an old photo of the house, showing different windows and a porch that once existed.

And the family loves the location, where they can walk into town for dining and shopping. And the nearby train station means David can hop the train to his office in Wheaton, which also is an older building the couple renovated.

They’ve taken care to stay true to the home’s original exterior designs, while updating and repairing the interior of the home. In the last 20 years they’ve touched every room but the kitchen.

Another change they didn’t make is removing the home’s heating system. While they replaced the original boiler they opted to keep the steam heat system that warms the home using radiators.

The intermittent hiss and click has become a familiar comfort to the Brunos.

“We’ve come to love it. We can hear the house taking care of us,” he says.

The couple loves the location, being able to walk to restaurants and shops, and feeling a part of the community. Their home has earned awards from the Geneva Historic Commission and Bruno previously served as a member of the commission. Today he is an alderman for Ward 1.

After years of living in new construction, Ralph and Debbie Fisher decided to search out a historic home, much like the ones Debbie remembered from her youth in Boston. They found that house at 415 Main Street in Batavia 16 years ago and knew immediately the antebellum home was perfect for them.

“It just had a feeling of a warm, cozy home and that’s what I love most,” Debbie Fisher says.

With more than 3,000 square feet of livable space the Victorian Italianate-styled home offers open rooms, unique spaces and a large kitchen and dining area. A favorite feature of the home is how it

makes use of those unique spaces. For example, a corner in the kitchen was turned into a large spice cabinet.

“That’s the fun part of an old home, you can find different ways to use space,” Fisher says.

The home originally was built as a two-flat.

Prior owners converted it to a single-family home, though some elements remain, including the second staircase in the back of the home.

Through the years the Fishers and previous homeowners have put their own touches on the home, with renovations to care for and update

the more than 155 year-old structure.

“This home has lots of character,” Fisher says.

She says the backyard with the large trees and gardens captured her interest and she loved the location of the home, just a short walk into town, the library and having a front row seat to parades too.

The couple has enjoyed learning about the history of the home. From previous owners knocking on their front door to neighbors sharing their own stories about a prior home-

owner, tenant. The couple, along with their granddaughter, took time to research the history of the home, utilizing court documents to locate information about the original owners and previous owners.

The Fishers are the seventh owners of the home, and they are ready to turn the keys to a new owner. The couple has decided to downsize and sell the home, but they plan to stay in the area and continue to enjoy the community.

Transform that drab basement into an underground marvel

By HANNAH PETERSON For many homeowners the basement holds boxes of Christmas decor, stores a variety of bric-a-brac, hot wheels collections and arts and crafts supplies, and might even serve as temporary housing for a returned home college graduate. Regardless of the current contents, it likely isn’t being used to its full potential.

“Your basement should be a cohesive living space, that transitions into the rest of your home,” says Bryan Hand, owner of Fox Valley Carpentry.

Hand has been in the business for 16 years and in that time has gained some great insight into the “finished” basement.

“Every client has a wish list of ideas for the space. Whether it becomes a home theater and bar to entertain, or an extra bedroom for that college graduate, all are fairly common features and affordable,” says Hand.

At Fox Valley Carpentry, an average basement remodels at anywhere between $30-$70 per square foot, though each job is as different as the home itself. The big difference in price, however, will have more to do with access than any other factor.

“Taking materials down crooked flights of stairs, etc. can cause obstacles, but that’s the job and we acclimate,” says Hand.

Once the walls and floors are finished, any additional trim or unique design gives the room that edge, and personal taste of the homeowner.

Surrounding a simple valley column with tabletop seating is one such example. “It’s something different,” says Hand. Another feature to pay attention to would be your doors. “The waver costs the same no matter how ornate or simplistic the door is, so pay that extra charge and get something nice,” adds Hand.

Stave off that cabin fever and use this season to your advantage by finally making that dream basement a reality.

“I always like to tell my clients to dress it up, don’t just play it safe and leave it bare, “ says Hand. “Give it a purpose.”

Tips to consider for basement remodeling BUILT IN STORAGE Your walls are bare, so now is the perfect opportunity to add built in cabinetry and shelving. It will be a great place to keep the things you already store in the basement, without taking over the rest of the finished space.

LIGHT AND BRIGHT Bright color accents on walls and in décor, along with glass panel interior doors can bring much needed brightness into a traditionally drab basement space

CARPET TILES Cold concrete floors can be warmed up with the addition of carpet tiles, which are growing in popularity.

It’s a great for a basement because single tiles easily can be easily replaced if damaged or stained.

Waterproof options are available as well.

PAINTED CEILINGS To conceal the ductwork and pipes in your basement ceiling, you might be inclined to put in a common drop ceiling, or even drywall. But a lot of basements come up short, and those options can leave your finished room feeling vertically challenged. Consider leaving the ceiling exposed and use a sprayer to paint it with a color of your choice. This is especially effective in rooms finished with a lofty, industrial style.

Renovation masters

When it comes to historic structures, architect Lane Allen understands there is much more than meets the eye.

As a partner in Allen + Pepa Architects he has been a part of some large historical renovation projects in the Kane and DuPage counties.

Allen’s firm drew up the plans to take down and rebuild the Holbrook Mill in Aurora, one of the oldest structures in Kane County. Built in 1844, the limestone structure was in complete disrepair, but the owner wanted to save the building and restore the exterior to its original appearance.

Allen said the structure was taken down and rebuilt with a new frame.

The project is LEED registered and is expected to receive a “gold” LEED certification.

For the River Breeze Lofts in Aurora, the architectural firm designed plans to take the neglected 1880s heavy-timber building and create restaurant/retail space on the street level with condos above.

Allen said each historic building, residential or commercial, is an individual project. Hiring an architect provides someone to give input and mediate between the owners’ desires and what makes for best practice.

“There’s not a lot of tolerance for mistakes,” Allen said. “It takes a lot of time to properly remodel these things.”

Time is not the friend to an owner of an older home, as it’s important to stay on top of maintenance. And before purchasing an older home it’s essential to obtain a home inspection to further assess the home and identify issues that could become costly repairs.

Outside of work Allen has been involved in his own historical renovation project with his home in Batavia. The original home was built in 1905. Due to a fire, prior to his ownership, much of the home was remodeled and updated, but there are still projects for Allen and his family to tackle in the home.

“With a historic home you want to capture the feeling of a time in history,” Allen said.

From light remodeling to a complete renovation, Allen said working with the right architect can make a homeowner’s vision become a reality.

As the years rolled by Bob and Sue expanded the business, working on porches and patio spaces, expanding into sunrooms. Clients were happy, and wanted the McDowell team back for other home projects.

“People kept asking us, ‘Don’t you do bathrooms?’ Can you help us with our kitchen?’” Sue recalls.

Soon, the demands thrust the McDowells into full-fledged home remodeling, and today, with a staff of 15 experts in renovation, design and construction, they handle most any remodeling job.

the whole job run that much more smoothly. “ The time I spend with our clients, 90 percent of it is education as to the realities of remodeling,” she says. Often, the clients begin without really being certain of what they want for the room, she explains.

“We try to get to the root of it…what is it you want to achieve?” she says. “We’re great at creating that million-dollar look on budget.”

Many times, people have ideas they have seen on television, thanks in part to the growth in popularity of home design shows. “ I love a customer who wants to venture out,” she says. “But sometimes I think people want something different, but they need to be opened up to that.

She also arrives at your door with the knowledge of some of the hottest and newest décor trends. Before coming to McDowell, Liberatore, a Kentucky native, ran her own interior design company in New York. She moved here with her husband after he was transferred to Carol Stream last year. TO BUILD With so many upgrades offered, which are the best to choose?

hen it comes to purchasing a newly-built home, it is important to consider all possible building options. And if that home is a custom build, the sky really is the limit in terms of what to include at construction. Even in a semi-custom built home, builders often offer sheet after sheet of options. How do you decide what to add at build and which can wait until later?

Christy Whelan, director of sales for Airhart Construction, says anything that is structural or expensive should really be done at build.

She added it also has been popular for those with three- or four-story homes to have walk-in closets with room to add an elevator later.

For example, Whelan says a deep pour basement, which provides for nine-foot ceilings as opposed to eight-foot ceilings, must be done at build. This is particularly important if a buyer plans on finishing their basement at a later date.

It is also a good idea to rough in the plumbing for a future bathroom in the basement.

“They want to prepare it so as they get older… or if someone needs it, they’re not forced to move,” she says.

Enlarging the garage for storage space and preparing the attic for bonus rooms generally are cheaper to do at build, rather than later on, she says.

Whole house generators and back up sump pumps also are popular options, as are upgraded flooring, granite and backsplash, multiple islands in the kitchen, dog washing stations in the mudroom and boot benches in the mudroom.

“Sometimes, people will make the house handicap-accessible, even if they don’t currently need it,” Whelan says.

ARE YOU THERE, SPRING? IT’S ME, MEAGAN. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this some of our snow will be disappearing.

So what does this harsh winter mean for plants when spring finally does arrive?

Here are some things that will be forefront in our minds as we all thaw out.

ANIMAL DAMAGE The rabbits have been ferocious this winter.

The snow is deep that they are able to reach higher and do quite a bit of damage to trees and shrubs. You may notice branches that have been gnawed on or completely removed. The best thing to do is wait out the spring and see how the old and new growth appear. Some damage may be able to be trimmed out and will not show, and some may heal itself. Other plants may be too far gone and will have to be replaced. If there has been any lesson learned this winter, it’s to put chicken wire around plants that rabbits prefer in November, and keep it on until spring comes. Also, use repellents to keep them away from your favorites. If you have a rabbit problem in your yard, there are plenty of plants that they don’t bother, so ask for advice if you find you have to replace damaged/dead plant material.

COLD TEMPERATURES AND HARDINESS While we make every effort to only grow plants that are hardy to the Chicago area, below-zero temperatures this year may cause some dieback. This does not mean that the plant is dead. Many plants die back each year anyway, but the best thing to do is to wait it out… and by wait, I mean give it until May or June. Allow the plant plenty of time to leaf out and self-adjust before you rip it out or trim it severely.

Plants know when it’s safe to leaf out and use their reserves to fix themselves. If you start chopping things off, you are preventing the plant from repairing itself. After you’ve given it some time, you can trim off any branches that haven’t leafed out and make sure you fertilize to help the plant renew its resources. Also, don’t try to remove snow and ice from plants. Let it melt naturally to avoid damaging frozen branches. If this deep snow has any redeeming quality, it’s that it is acting as insulation against the cold temperatures and protecting small plants like Boxwood that easily can be burnt in cold temperatures.

DISEASES AND INSECTS If anything good comes of extremely cold temperatures, it might be the decline of certain bug populations. It’s not a guarantee, but some species of insects will not be able to tolerate the low temperatures.

Be aware, however, that many insects (including the Emerald Ash Borer) have defense mechanisms that allow them to survive, so don’t rely solely on the cold when keeping your insect control in mind. Cold temperatures are not a free pass to skip a year with your systemic treatments. We still recommend using systemic insecticides in May to quell the Japanese beetle population and keep treating your Ash trees if you have them.

As far as diseases go, each season is different so make sure you keep an eye on weather conditions so you can decide if you need to treat for fungal diseases.

Apple scab, powdery mildew, and other fungal issues still can be a yearly problem no matter what the previous winter held.

Helping young children adjust to parents’ divorce

February was considered the “Month of Love”.

How quickly couples change their minds. Statistically, March is one of the highest months for couples to “consciously uncouple” as Gwyneth Paltrow so famously said. As a therapist who has spent many years working with children, I see many little ones trying to navigate their way through their parents’ divorces.

I also work with parents who generally are well-intentioned, and want to help their children the best ways they can.

Many times parents will say, “I hope she will just talk to you.” While that is what most people envision when they think of therapy sessions, it is not so for young children. Children use “play” as their form of therapy. Play Therapy helps children express their feelings and experiences. Sometimes parents don’t understand that and wonder why their child has spent a whole session “playing”. Inside a therapy room, children have a safe place to express their fears and feelings. They also are taught coping skills. But at this young age, parents still have the most control over how well their children will do during and after their divorce.

isneyland bills itself as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” and most days, that’s probably accurate. Lately, however, it’s been anything but. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the measles epidemic that started in Disneyland in December 2014 has now ballooned to at least 51 cases in seven states, and at least one case in Mexico.

In the recent measles outbreak, many of those afflicted were unvaccinated, and there are different reasons given by parents for choosing not to vaccinate. In my practice, I get a lot of questions about vaccines, with parents often repeating the same misinformation over and over again. I can’t debunk every myth about vaccines in this single post, but I will address the ones I hear most frequently.

Vaccines, especially the MMR (measlesmumps-rubella), cause autism.

This is a common concern, but one that is misplaced. The origin of this concern lies in either the worry about mercury-containing preservative in vaccines called thimerosol, or in the 1998 study by Andrew Wakefield supposedly linking the MMR vaccine to autism.

However, there are no childhood vaccines that contain mercury now (and haven’t been for years), and there was never any evidence that mercury caused autism. The thimerosol was removed over theoretical concerns.

And the Lancet, the journal that published the original study, retracted the article in 2010 after the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom found that Wakefield had acted dishonestly in reporting his findings.

On the contrary, over 100 studies in dozens of countries that included hundreds of thousands of patients have found no difference in autism among vaccinated and un-vaccinated children.

Certainly, vaccines have side effects.

Sometimes, these are minor, such as mild fever or muscle ache at the site of injection. Other

side effects are more severe, such as higher fevers or prolonged crying. But autism is not a side effect of vaccines.

Kids get too many shots now.

If science came up with new cures for deadly diseases, I doubt anyone would complain, “There are too many medicines now. I prefer the old days with only a few medicines, and people died from curable diseases.” This is essentially what this concern is saying. True, modern medicine has found vaccines to prevent illnesses that caused a lot of death and disability. So why not use them?

While it is true that there are more vaccines than in the past, the antigenic load (the amount of protein load in the vaccines) as a whole is actually less than 30 to 40 years ago, when we only had a few vaccines. That is because the science behind vaccinations has gotten better, and they are more refined and sophisticated now. And they are getting safer, too.

The diseases they prevent aren’t deadly. I had chicken pox and I did fine.

The irony of vaccines is that they have been so good at preventing some illnesses that people forget about them. At one point, measles became so rare that no one thought of it anymore, and vaccination rates waned.

The epidemic of 1989-2001, which hit Chicago particularly hard, was devastating. I saw children die from measles. I witnessed children become neurologically wasted from measles.

That should never happen in this country again.

Yes, many of us survived chicken pox. We were lucky. Every year, until the vaccine was introduced in the early 1990s, about 100 to 150 children died from complications from the chicken pox. Now, hardly anyone dies from chicken pox. Some may argue that 100-150 children each is not a lot, but how would you feel if one of those kids was yours? Would you still think chicken pox was “no big deal?”

The vaccines are ineffective.

This comes up from time to time, and was included in a comment on one of our vaccine blogs in the past. This is simply untrue. As the graph from the American Academy of Microbiology shows, the rates of four diseases decreased dramatically after vaccines were introduced.

If everyone else got vaccinated, and I don’t vaccinate my child, then my child will still be protected.

As a corollary to #4 above, I must state that although vaccines are effective, no vaccine is ever 100 percent effective. Most vaccines today are between 90-98 percent effective.

But if everyone got vaccinated, then when someone got the illness, it would not spread like wildfire since the vast majority of people would be protected. But we have seen what happens when vaccine rates dip below a certain critical threshold: one case turns into 20 turns into 100 turns into an epidemic. This is especially true because many anti-vaxxers tend to congregate in the same communities and schools. Also, some of these diseases are just a plane ride away, as international travellers may be coming from countries where routine vaccination is not common. And many here in the United States are either too young to vaccinate or have medical conditions that prevent vaccination.

So one parent’s decision to not vaccinate not only puts that child in jeopardy, but also puts at risk all the other people with whom that child comes into contact.

I know there are parents out there who will not be convinced by anything I or any other physician or scientist says or writes about vaccines. But I am speaking to those parents who are a little unsure: vaccinations are safe, effective, and they save lives. For their sake, please vaccinate your children.

arch is time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, take that Spring Break trip and . . . focus on the health of your eyes? It’s true – March is “Save Your Vision” month and aims to increase awareness regarding good eye care. Organized by the American Optometric Association (AOA), the main focus of this campaign is to encourage more people to go for regular eye exams. With computers becoming an everyday part of people’s lives, the risk of eye strain and damage is higher than before.

As an ophthalmologist – a physician who specializes in the medical and surgical care of the eyes and visual system and in the prevention of eye disease and injury -- Katherine Brito, M.D., of the Geneva Eye Clinic, not only treats eye diseases but helps patients prevent problems before they occur.

Make Time for an Eye Exam One of the most important preventative steps you can take to protect your vision is to have eye exams throughout your life. “In Illinois, every child is required to have an eye exam to start kindergarten,” she says. She says healthy adults with no eye problems should have a few eye exams in their 40s and then annually starting at

age 50 to screen for glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

“Blink!” on the computer as a reminder is another good idea.

There are multiple benefits associated with having regular eye exams. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), “the eyes are a clear window to your health, and the amount of information they can reveal is astounding.” It’s true – the ophthalmologist can see the symptoms of more than 30 conditions just by looking into the eyes. That’s why eye doctors - ophthalmologists and optometrists - are frequently among the first to spot certain problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Focus on Your Diet

Take a Break from Computers Today, computers are everywhere – at work, at home and even on the train or bus on your commute. “Looking at computer monitors will not harm your eyes,” says Brito. “However, when using a computer or doing close work that requires concentration, we blink less than normal which can cause dryness, eyestrain and fatigue.” The AAO suggests that you stop for breaks at regular intervals and recommends following the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for at least 20 seconds. Posting a note that says

Eating healthy foods is good for your whole body, including your eyes. “Brightly colored vegetables and fruits provide our eyes with the vitamins they need,” says Brito. So it’s true – “carrots, indeed, are beneficial to the eyes!” According to the National Eye Institute, all fruits and vegetables are helpful but especially dark, leafy greens such as spinach, kale and collard greens.

Research has also shown that eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna and halibut, can enhance your eye health. According to the AAO, citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts and whole grains are also important to consume.

Prevent Injuries: • AT HOME –Brito urges people to wear safety goggles when doing home improvement projects that involve sawing, hammering, drilling, sanding and splashing chemicals.

• AT WORK – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported that about 2,000 U.S. workers sustain job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment each day. Safety experts, however, believe the right

eye protection could lessen the severity or even prevent 90% of these injuries.

Potential eye hazards in the workplace include projectiles, such as dust, concrete and wood; chemicals, such as splashes and fumes; radiation, such as ultraviolet light, lasers or infrared radiation; and blood borne pathogens, such as blood and body fluids. OSHA requires the use of eye and face protection whenever there is reasonable probability of injury.

• DURING SPORTS – Brito says that people that play baseball, basketball, football, racquet sports, soccer, wrestling, all forms of hockey and lacrosse should wear polycarbonate protective eyewear.

Shield Your Eyes from the Sun According to Brito, wearing sunglasses with UV protection prevents an immediate problem of sunburn of the eyes and lowers your long-term risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. “Remember, UV protection glasses or goggles should be worn when snow or water skiing,” Brito says.

Round is also a hot trend, especially for men.

t’s easy to think about new beginnings during the first days of spring. This season transforms the frost of winter into dew and new life emerges like ritual each year.

“The egg is such a versatile ingredient,” says Mike Dixon, owner of Nosh in Geneva.

“It’s one of the few items that can be served as a breakfast, lunch, dinner and even as a dessert!”

This spring, Dixon’s menu at Nosh will include several new salads featuring eggs: poached, over easy and hard-boiled.

It includes eggs, house-made croutons, bacon, Spanish chorizo, prosciutto, garlic, caramelized onions and drizzled balsamic reduction.

At Daddio’s Diner, owners Scott and Terry Beltran are excited about their featured egg dishes this spring. “One is a Spring Egg Roll made with eggs, chorizo, Chihuahua and Monterey Jack cheeses, green onion, sweet peppers and cumin,” explains Scott. “We are also excited about Eggs-traordinary Eggs, which are Italian scrambled eggs.”

As we digested, my eyes could not help but wander. G

eorge Shipperley and his wife of 56 years, Lois, have lived in Aurora since the 1950s. Together they raised three daughters, and now have an extended family that consists of eight grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

As a young adult, George served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. Upon leaving the service, he and his wife returned to Aurora where George pursued a 33-year sales career with an international manufacturing company. During this time, George and his wife opened Henrich Art Gallery and Custom Frame Shop in Aurora (the shop

closed in June 2011 after 34 years of successful and memorable business).

Following his retirement from sales in 1994, George dedicated his time to the pursuit of his true passion: painting. His passion quickly evolved into a second career (much more fulfilling and enjoyable than the first), and for 20 years since the time of retirement, George has focused solely on his art and continues to develop, cultivate and advance his talent.

An artist with an emphasis on originality, creativity and color, George specializes in oil pastel and oil stick mediums. His work can be viewed regularly

Is Illinois holding some of your money or other property?

ave you ever wondered what financial institutions and other organizations do with inactive accounts and other unclaimed property? After five years the property is turned over to the state. Such property includes inactive saving and checking accounts, unpaid wages and commissions, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, money orders, bill overpayments and the contents of safe deposit boxes.

Illinois currently holds $2.1 billion (yes with a “b”) in cash, plus the contents of safe deposit boxes.

The Illinois Treasurer’s Office estimates they hold assets for one of eight Illinois residents.

That means Illinois is likely holding property that belongs to you or someone you know.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to see if the state holds your property and if so, reclaim the property. Go to www.icash.illinois.gov, enter your name and city of residence and see what you find.

This site was set up and is maintained by the Illinois Treasurer’s Office.

A hint about using the site: try different combinations. I used Jeffrey Martin and Jeff Martin. Jeff Martin turned up two refunds I am owed from companies (I’m in the process of filing claims). Also, if you include the city make sure to check all cities where you have lived.

If you have lived outside of Illinois, you can search for assets in many other states using www. missingmoney.com. Illinois does not currently share information with this site, but many other KDM Investm states are included.

Millions of companion animals enter shelters every year. With limited resources, shelters struggle to house as many animals as possible and often look for the assistance of foster families. Foster homes provide animals with a nurturing environment and a head start at finding a loving forever home.

Foster parents play an important role by providing in-home care to homeless companion animals. Once they commit to the responsibilities and duration of care, they take the rescue(s) home and provide them with food, medications, training, socializing and affection. Parent Rebecca Hunter teaches her feline fosters the skills they need to know to get adopted. She initiated a “Kitten Charm School” with specific behaviors kittens learn in order to be good pets.

Fosters also provide a safe and quiet environment. They modify their homes with areas for play, feeding, bathing and quarantine.

This quiet, safe environment is critical to the rescues’ well-being and development. Nancy Miles, who started fostering for Anderson Animal Shelter 10 years ago, notes that, “We give them an advantage of a healthy home environment. Shelters can be stressful for the animals. I cannot stress enough what benefits home care brings; less risk of illness, one-on-one care and of course love!”

Maria Schau, Anderson’s Foster Program Manger works with the shelter’s foster families on an ongoing basis. “It is such a rewarding experience for our fosters to care for these animals and follow them through to the final process of adoption by their forever family,” she said. “There are a number of states that have a pet overpopulation problem and without our shelter and the fosters who support us, these dogs and cats would not have a chance at life.”

Some people foster individually, but for Laurie Riehm it’s a family project. She shared a mutual interest in animals with her young, energetic son who became noticeably gentle and thoughtful around animals. “I wanted to nurture that and teach the concept of giving back to the community,” Laurie said. She admits that the whole

family has pitched in at times for large litters of bottle feeders or sick babies who need medicine.

Being a foster parent is a commitment but the rewards are endless; it may be the satisfaction in nurturing a sick kitten back to health, the happiness in knowing you made a difference in an animal’s life, or the joy of teaching confidence to a pet who has experienced an unpleasant beginning. Laura Stephen-Gier admits that she enjoys, “…sharing my enthusiasm about the puppies that I’ve fostered and watching them be adopted — when families connect with a happy puppy, it’s magical! For me, I derive great joy in being a part of their ‘happy beginning’.”

A good foster parent has time, energy, dedication and love to share.

PASSION FOR THE PEOPLE Corinne Pierog takes the lead in life and work

decade ago, Corinne Pierog decided to take her work and life experiences and embark on her own to form Sustainable Leadership Solutions, a consulting firm that coaches nonprofit organizations on how to become and remain a sustainable business.

“It seems a natural fit from what I’ve been doing,” Pierog says. “My mother and father were both small business owners. I guess the entrepreneurial spirit was always with me.”

“I felt I could give good steward of education and the tax-payers dollars because of my work in nonprofits,” Pierog says.

The path to building her own business took many steps, from her varied work experience in the arts and non-profits to her own dedication to complete a masters degree in business while working full-time and raising two children as a single mother.

Of course there were struggles, Pierog says, and the juggling of schedules between work, school, her children’s classes and extracurricular activities. She also recalls fondly how at times she and her two children were seated around the dining room table, tackling assignments.

“It all seemed to work. We were all focused,” Pierog says. “Family is really at the core and that’s where it remains.”

Family was the reason Pierog moved to St. Charles. In a school and work career that took her from California to New York and North Carolina too, she longed to return to the area and be close to her family. She chose St. Charles for its top reputation for education.

Today she is helping to keep that reputation serving as a member of the St. Charles Unit School District 303 School Board, in addition to running her own business and dedicating time several other local non-profit programs in the area.

With a long career in the non-profit realm, Pierog still was a relative newcomer to the area when she decided to knock on her neighbors’ doors and complete the petitions to get on the ballot for the District 303 School Board election.

Today, she is serving her second term, and finds her passion and interest, as well as her prior experience as a university professor, makes her a good fit for the role.

Her small family grew when a professor from the Illinois Institute of Technology stepped into her life about nine years ago. She met husband Robert Krawczyk while working with the nonprofit Little City Foundation. He was working with the foundation regarding some art.

“He walked into my office to discuss an art exhibit by the residents of Little City and we locked eyes,” she says. “Sometimes there’s fate, or God, but I truly believe it was both.”

The single parents formed a new family with three children, who are now grown. Pierog and Krawczyk are enjoying a new part of life as grandparents, while staying active with their full-time work and volunteer opportunities, especially with the arts.

“She has a great passion for the arts,” Krawczyk says.

Pierog is a consulting executive director for The Morrison Shearer Foundation, working with the board and developing programming and support for the foundation’s photographic archives and films created by the mid-century photographer and dancer, for whom the foundation is named.

“She’s been a perfect match for us,” says Carol Doty, chairwoman of the foundation. “She’s got a lot of vitality and she’s very outgoing. She really puts her heart into the program.”

From her work to her volunteer opportunities, Pierog thrives on being an active part of the community, from her work in the county with programs such as the Show you Care Kane to support developmentally disabled adults to her work on state programs such as the governor’s appointment to the Illinois Business Enterprise Program.

“So many people have an opportunity to succeed and working together we may be able to help, it just takes a team,” Pierog says.
