No two couples are exactly alike, and a wedding should reflect that fact.

At Two Wild Seeds Baking Company, couples can design custom desserts that express their unique taste and style. The new St. Charles bakery whips up stunning wedding cakes and treats with a twist – everything is gluten free.

Susan and Katie Kritzberg are the mother-daughter duo behind the downtown bakery and cake shop.

The pair opened Two Wild Seeds together in May last year.

Each day, the menu rotates a variety of artisanal baked goods, from sweet to savory.

Everything that comes out of the kitchen is gluten free. The bakery also offers vegan and egg- or dairy-free options.

The process of creating a one-of-akind cake at Two Wild Seeds starts with a free consultation a few months before the big day. Many couples come in with a vision already in mind, but others need a little more guidance. Katie and Susan can help make recommendations based on their own expertise, the event’s location, number of guests and the couple’s style and preferences.

The next step is the tasting. Groups of up to four people can sample up to four of the bakery’s 22 cake flavors. And lingonberry orange is the perfect balance of tart and sweet – the cake turns out a beautiful pale pink.

"We've booked every single wedding we've done a tasting for here at the bakery," says Katie.

Though the bakery can create almost any cake a couple dreams up, there are some things they won’t do. They don’t make themed cakes or use dark dyes and fondant.

While some couples seek out the bakery due to dietary restrictions, others aren’t even aware that the cake they’re tasting is gluten-free.

“We do weddings that aren’t even gluten-free, but they come in for a tasting and they like our cakes,” says Katie. “We bake everything ourselves completely from scratch, and I think that’s what sets us apart. It’s not just being a gluten-free bakery, but our stuff just tastes good.”

The idea to make the bakery completely glutenfree sprang from Katie’s own gluten intolerance.

It was also the opportunity to fill a void in the community where she grew up.

“We still do your traditional four-tiered cake, but I think there’s a departure from that,” says Katie. “People are simplifying things, and they want something that tastes really good and is an expression of who they are as a couple.”

“We noticed there was a need for it in the area,” Katie says. “There’s really been a huge demand for gluten-free options and it’s growing.”

Another way couples are mixing it up is by forgoing the cake altogether. Dessert tables can be a fun, creative way to give guests lots of delicious options. Two Wild Seeds can create a personalized spread with miniature cookies, brownies and more.

As they’ve worked together opening Two Wild Seeds, Katie and Susan have found that their strengths complement each other.

“It’s a good balance,” says Katie. “My mom has an art background; she taught art for 25 years, so she brings an artistic flare to the custom cakes we do.”

Today’s trends strive to achieve a look that can appear as lovely and fresh today as it would 10 or even 50 years later. Designers are trying to achieve this difficult task by taking inspiration from fashion icons, such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

“I am a very traditional girl, so I kind of take the trends – and boil them down – and ask, ‘What am I going to love in 10 years?’ she says. “Some of them are beautiful now, but we want to avoid looking back at them and feeling regret.”

A dress may have a simple silhouette, but exquisite details, or subtle underlays of color that add drama. Some of the designs carried at The Crystal Bride in Geneva are incorporating pinks and gold into gowns.

EXCLUSIVELY BY CATERING WITH ELEGANCE

“When you put a light color behind lace then the lace really pops,” says Nancy McElvenny, owner of The Crystal Bride.

Some of McElvenny’s clients are attracted to dresses with vintage elements from “The Great Gatsby” era, which featured clean lines, she says.

“We’re seeing different fabrications with crepe fabrics – a beautiful matte finish that photographs lovely,” McElvenny says. “It has a little bit of stretch so that it hugs the curves of the bride beautifully.”

The cut of a bridal gown also contributes to dress trends, says Veiled In Elegance owner Kathy Lager. For great lines and cuts, the downtown Geneva shop owner features Paloma Blanca designs in her store.

“Low necklines are really popular right now,” says Lager. “What we love about Paloma Blanca is that they do it very tastefully. They make the classic necklines look modern. They fill it in with illusion lace that you can see through.”

Illusion necklines are just one of the structural elements that are trending in bridal gowns this year. All three bridal boutique owners expressed that brides are expressing renewed interest in straps and sleeves.

“We’re seeing a lot of sheer sleeves,” Patyk says of this season’s trends. “Really beautiful sheer sleeves – maybe lace – very

Having sleeves or straps as part of a dress’s design not only allows for more structure and visual interest, but both features can open up possibilities for back details, such as being completely open or having lace or beading.

Remember the accessories Accessories also are important elements to consider when pulling together a look.

“White opal is really popular this year – the combination of the white opal with the clear crystal or with a champagne [colored] stone – it’s a very soft look, really nice,” says Lager.

White opal and rose-gold metals can be incorporated into anything, from the dress and shoes to jewelry and hairpieces. Tiaras may be out of style now but there many other options to consider, such as veils or hair clips.

“Veils continue to be very big, especially cathedral veils,” McElvenny says. “As far as hair accessories, girls are leaning towards headbands, clips or combs … . Flowers are popular for softer, more bohemian looks.”

“Brides are liking a little bit of sparkle in the bridesmaid dresses,” Lager says.

“They’re looking for tulle or chiffon dresses and sometimes with a little sparkle.”

It’s normal for a bride to try to choose a dress that her bridesmaids will likely be able to wear again for another occasion.

Patyk often looks for bridesmaid dresses that can be worn on a nice date.

“I’m a huge fan of floral prints,” Patyk says. “I have one dress by Theia – that’s my absolute favorite; it [has] a high neckline and a totally open back. Cuts have really changed in bridesmaid dresses. There are lots of sleeves and flowy and boho looks – I love those – lots of mixing of fabrics, such as a sequins tops and a chiffon skirt; [and] lots of slits this year. I think everyone loves a good slit. You can have that Angelina Jolie moment that everybody wants.”

Whether it’s for the bride or the bridesmaids, the fashion trends of 2017 implement new twists on classic styles.

Hopefully, when you look back on your wedding day 10 years from now, you’ll love your dress just as much as when you first walked down that aisle.

If the shoe fits When it comes to shoes, brides are having a little more fun.

“We only carry one [shoe] designer, Angela Nuran, and she was a dancer,” Lager says. “She was working with brides to help choreograph their dances.”

A dance background gives the Angela Nuran shoes a great deal of customizable options. They can be dyed to match bridesmaid dresses, embellished with crystals or fitted to any length or width.

THE STORY OF A MODERN-DAY, AMERICAN WEDDING

A year and a half ago, I was married on the Fourth of July.

Some called it “the American wedding.”

I loved attending weddings when I was young. I grew up poor and was homeschooled in Batavia, so weddings were the only opportunity to dress up for a formal and celebratory occasion – you know, eat good food. When I was considering the elements I wanted to incorporate into my own wedding, I quickly realized that good food was at the top of the list. My fiancée agreed.

Friends took photos, another friend provided ceremony music and yet another friend officiated.

Having a same-sex wedding granted us the freedom to focus on our relationship and values rather than tradition.

For example, tradition dictates that my dad walk me down the aisle and “give me away.”

Instead, Melissa and I walked down the aisle together to the song, “How Long Will I Love You?” by Ellie Goulding.

Our officiant began the ceremony with a line from the film “The Princess Bride”: “Mawage.

Mawage is what bwings us together today.

Mawage, that bwessed awangement, that dweam wifin a dweam… .”

The opening made everyone laugh and feel more relaxed.

What I learned from the overall experience of planning and hosting a wedding ceremony and reception is that it’s easy to get distracted by what other people want.

For example, you will probably be bombarded by family members’ requests for additional www.kcchronicle.com/magazine

guests. My aunt thought that it was vitally important to invite my extended family over friends – a suggestion that would require accommodating a larger number of guests, which would have derailed my budget and my vision. It was incredibly difficult for me to go against her urging, but I’m glad that I stayed true to myself.

During the event, I also noticed that I craved positive feedback from people more than usual. I put so much time, money and work into planning my wedding that I wanted to ensure that everyone was having fun. Fortunately, most people told me that they loved it.

The event exceeded our expectations. It was everything that I loved about weddings as a child, but amplified. It was truly a celebratory occasion. rom the first moment that the Brandonisio family opened Acquaviva winery in western Kane County, they knew it would quickly become a “destination,” says Joe Brandonisio, general manager of the property.

But, later this spring, the “destination” property – which already features a winery, an Italian restaurant, a market and acres of vineyards on a rolling landscape in Maple Park – will add a new amenity.

In the years since the winery opened in 2010, Brandonisio says that it has drawn an evergrowing loyal clientele, with patrons traveling from as far as Chicago or – at times – from places even more distant.

And, as the winery has gained in popularity, its visitors have suggested that the property also offer overnight accommodation.

Guests staying at the inn will have access to a wine-tasting bar and market, and the home’s private patio. They also will have access to stroll along the vineyard estate, apple orchard and summer vegetable garden.

The winery has not yet secured a precise date on which the inn will open, though it will almost certainly open in the spring, says Brandonisio.

In Petersen’s experience, couples renewing their vows tend to keep the wedding attire casual.

“I wouldn’t even use the word ‘gown,’” says Petersen, who classifies a bride’s typical look as an outfit that one might wear to a nice dinner or out on the weekend.

The same goes for men. Petersen has found that grooms dressed in suits tend to be unusual. A groom may choose to wear a nice shirt – tie-optional – and casual pants.

I really like shooting into the sun and with it peaking around some clouds and right on the roof’s edge of the Fishermen’s Inn building, this was an ideal moment to capture a creative portrait. Katie had this amazing long veil that she had made herself, and I wanted to feature it in this shot. I had a bridesmaid hold the veil behind me, and a breeze gave it a nice form. I needed two speedlights to light them for this shot.

p You can sometimes get some emotional, fun shots at the end of the ceremony, as the bride and groom are being congratulated – but you’ve got to put yourself in position to capture it. There are fountains to shoot through with water spraying and the sun streaming through them. The pond goes around the front of the ceremony site with exquisite landscaping. In this shot, I shot at f/4 so I would have a wider depth of field and more would be in focus.

They chose Fishermen’s Inn in part because of the gorgeous setting, and I wanted to be sure that was featured in this wedding ceremony shot.

t This is a shot that many photographers get wrong with their settings. As you can guess, Katie loves flowers and this wagon with the flowers it, and around it, is the perfect setting for a romantic shot. The idea is to get the flowers and wagon in focus, but have Katie and Eddie be softly out of focus. Many photographers will shoot this wide open (at f/2.8) thinking they need a shallow depth of field, but with them at this distance from the wagon, they would turn into a blurry blob. I actually shot this at f/14 to get just the right amount out-of-focus blur to get the shot exactly as I want it.

Food city ST. CHARLES RESTAURANT WEEK OFFERS A TASTE OF THE TOWN

In a few weeks, it may get quite a bit harder to land an open table at a restaurant in St. Charles.

And that is precisely what St. Charles city officials and restaurateurs alike hope will happen, when the community rolls out its annual St. Charles Restaurant Week event.

Now, in its seventh year, the annual weeklong promotion, which takes place at the end of February and beginning of March, offers people the chance to save 20 percent anytime they dine at participating restaurants throughout the city of St. Charles.

This year, the event will run from Monday, Feb. 27, to Friday, March 3.

“We love it,” says Lisa Garhan, spokeswoman for the City of St. Charles. “It gets people out and offers them a great chance to explore St. Charles’ booming restaurant scene.”

Last year, more than 30 restaurants participated in the event.

The 2016 list of participating restaurants included Salerno’s on the Fox, Francesca’s by the River, Szechwan Restaurant, Gino’s East, Colonial Café, the Evergreen Pub & Grill, the St. Charles Steak House and Riverside Pizza & Pub, Shakou St. Charles, Wok ‘n’ Fire, Isacco Kitchen, Rox City Grill and the Spotted Fox Ale House, among many others.

This year’s list of participating restaurants had not yet been publicized by the time this story went to press. But Garhan says that the roster of participating establishments is expected to be just as varied, as nearly three dozen restaurants of all kinds are expected to sign on to accept the 20 percent off Restaurant Week coupon.

In mid-February, the city will mail the coupons

– in the form of postcards – to city residents and others. Coupons also will be printed in local newspapers and posted online at the city of St. Charles’ website, www.stcharlesil.gov, and online advertisements will offer the dining coupons, which will be available to print or download to mobile phones and other devices.

Once a diner visits one of the restaurants on the list of participating establishments, he or she should present the coupon at the time of service to get his or her check discounted 20 percent.

The list of participating restaurants will be published on the city of St. Charles’ website.

While the program itself is easy, securing a table at certain popular dining spots during Restaurant Week can prove a bit more challenging, Garhan says. Many take advantage of the weeklong event because it’s a lower-cost way to visit an old favorite or try a new place. “… We definitely recommend people get their reservations in as soon as they get their coupons,” she says. “Some tables will go fast.”

The city doesn’t know how many people actually participate in the event, but Garhan says that the city’s Restaurant Week page, located on the city’s website, received more than 3,500 unique visits in the week leading up to the event – meaning that it drew large interest from households throughout the TriCities and beyond.

Restaurant owners regularly tell the city that “they are notably busier during Restaurant Week,” she says.

“Sushi, pizzas, fine dining, pubs and grills – there are so many choices,” Garhan says. “You can easily delight your foodie side.”

“It’s not just lying on a beach,” says Dana Prichard, a travel consultant at Cary Travel Express, who specializes in honeymoons and destination weddings.

“Its more of an interactive type of vacation. Couples are seeing different places and exploring history and culture.”

OUT WEST The perfect honeymoon may be a short (domestic) flight away. Whether it’s to save money or take less time off work, many couples are opting to stay in or near the U.S. for their post-wedding vacations. According to a 2016 survey by Westin Hotels and Resorts, three out of four couples say that they are staying in the U.S. or Canada for their honeymoon.

The most popular close-to-home destinations? Anywhere west.

STAYING ACTIVE More couples are embracing an active and healthy lifestyle, and they want their honeymoons to reflect that. The Westin survey found that 80 percent of couples reported being more active and healthconscious during their honeymoon than at home. And, if given the chance to redo their honeymoon, 44 percent would prefer to be even more active.

“Some people want to relax after the wedding, but some couples still want to explore and be active,” says Prichard.

Some resorts offer free rentals of workout gear, so couples can sweat it out without packing extra stuff. And many resorts have an abundance of active excursions nearby, such as rock climbing, parasailing, scuba diving and more.

MULTIPLE LOCATIONS More and more newlyweds are looking to make the most of their time away.

The number of couples who have visited more than one destination on their honeymoon has increased from 35 percent to 70 percent in the last five years, according to the Westin survey.

“If they’re going to go far, they’re going to want to do multiple destinations,” she says. She often sees this with couples traveling to Europe, where travel among countries is convenient and inexpensive.

While destination-hopping can add more planning and logistics to the trip, there are still ways to achieve the same effect with a smaller budget and less hassle.

“I’d recommend doing split resorts at the same destination,” says LaSota.

“They can feel like two totally different destinations.”

When I tell people that my girlfriend, Lydia, and I spent four months cycling across Europe and sleeping in a tent, they often ask the same question: “So, at what point did she want to rip your head off?”

Of course we got on one another’s nerves, but a majority of the trip was a growing experience. Traveling with your partner is the perfect litmus test to see how well you both work together.

¢ Utilize your individual strengths Rather quickly, we discovered how to utilize our individual strengths. We would alternate between being the superhero and the sidekick, which taught us to rely on one another.

For example, I would prepare dinner while Lydia would wash our clothes in a nearby creek; and Lydia would put up the tent, while I would inspect it for spiders.

Also, don’t shy away from changing things up. It might turn out that your partner ends up being better or more efficient at a certain task. I thought that I was great at handling the budget, until I passed those duties off to Lydia.

Under her control, she found a way to save us money.

¢ Alone time is paramount Alone time is important to sort out your thoughts and just be. Seeking out personal time allowed me to appreciate the many moments we spent together.

The best part about travelling by bicycle was that whenever I needed a little space, I could pull ahead – about 20 feet – and ride in front for a while. We found this to be crucial while spending every waking – and sleeping – moment together.

¢ Adversity is a guarantee We faced countless challenges during our journey: flat tires on a mountainside, wet clothing, weeks without showers and saddle sores the size of nickels. The way we worked together began to evolve when we started viewing adversity as just a problem with a

solution. And we worked together to find those solutions.

After an extremely hot day in Slovenia, having covered more than 70 miles on our bikes, we pulled into a campsite. Our stomachs rumbled and our hands trembled from weakness.

While checking into the campsite – completely famished – I learned some peculiar news.

“It’s a nudist campground,” I said to Lydia.

“Oh. So, we are going to see some naked people?” she asked.

“Well, yes,” I continued. “And, also, it is against the rules to wear clothes here. So, we will have to be naked, too.”

Though we were exhausted, the humorous situation actually lifted are spirits. And the idea of having to follow said campsite rules was motivation enough for us to move on.

Laughter was always one of the life sources that kept us weathering the winds.

Traveling can either split the seams or strengthen the bond of a relationship.

Sometimes it does both. When one of us screwed up, it was important to stay united. We had to forgive those bitter moments to enjoy all of the wonderful ones.

A happy relationship is not about avoiding adversities, but rather having the courage to hit dead ends and find a new route together.

It’s a very active community. … It’s a good place to raise a family.”

Zillow forecasts a 3.6 percent rise in home prices in 2017. In 2016, Kombrink says that sales of homes under $400,000 fared more strongly than homes over $400,000. Kombrink expects the trend to hold, but still shows optimism

ANDERSON ANIMAL SHELTER TO OPEN SATELLITE ADOPTION LOCATION IN NORTH AURORA If you drive by Pet Supplies Plus on Randall Road in North Aurora in late January, don’t be surprised if you see an “Adoptions” sign hanging out front. That’s because Anderson Animal Shelter has partnered with Pet Supplies Plus to create a permanent satellite adoption center, located adjacent to the North Aurora PSP store. By the end of January, Anderson expects to have as many as 15 dogs and puppies and 20 cats and kittens available for adoption at this center, which will be open seven days a week.

Executive Director, Beth Drake, is ecstatic about the opportunity to increase adoptions for the shelter. “We couldn’t be more excited about this new adoption center,” Drake said. “Everyone at Pet Supplies Plus has been wonderful to work with. We know that every adoption is a life saved and if we reach our goal of 1,500 adoptions from this adoption center this year, that’s 1,500 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens who will be in loving home instead of starving on the street. That’s very meaningful to us.”

Anderson’s main shelter, located at 1000 South LaFox Street in South Elgin, will remain open for adoptions.

The shelter’s veterinary clinic will provide support for the satellite adoption center, and humane education programming, dog training, and other shelter services will remain in operation at the main shelter location.

Within the next few months, Anderson also has plans to

open a second satellite adoption center inside the Petco store in Bloomingdale. An exact opening date has not yet been determined for this location.

A day in the life of a landscape designer

R

ecently, my college’s alumni magazine asked me to give them a rundown of a “day in the life” of a landscape designer. It got me thinking that it might be interesting for others to see this profession from behind the scenes, as well.

Many folks tell me they envy my job. I work outside, get to play with plants and see beautiful gardens. I love my work and helping all of you create beautiful outdoor spaces.

So, without further ado, here is what an average day on the job looks like for me: 7:30 A.M. I have coffee with my installation foremen and nursery manager to discuss the day’s projects.

At Wasco Nursery, nothing happens before coffee.

We go over what crews are going where, discuss any changes to the design plan, speculate the rest of the week’s projects (and the weather forecast) and whether we will remain on schedule.

During the busy spring season, my crews can be booked about six to eight weeks in advance, so I run a tight ship with my calendar and crews in order to keep all of my clients happy. I have two amazing crews and the hard work and dedication they put in each and every day, no matter the conditions, is admirable.

8 A.M. I sift through voicemails and emails. Usually clients just have questions regarding care of new plants, holes in leaves, watering, etc. But, sometimes, issues can be more serious, taking more time or involving a site visit.

8:30 A.M. I take a walk through our retail sales yard. Most of the plants that I specify for my

landscape designs come from the 10-acre retail yard, so I like to stay on top of our inventory. I also personally tag specimens for my clients. I’m a plant person before all else so it’s imperative that I get out in the yard at least once a week.

The plants inspire me.

9 A.M. TO 3 P.M. My days always include client visits. I meet with potential clients at their homes, go over their wants and needs for landscaping, take measurements and discuss fees and installation services. I usually try to keep on-site client meetings to two or three per day, but it can be five or six per day during the spring.

I usually meet with clients again about two to three weeks after my initial on-site visit. By that time, I’ve drawn their landscape design using CAD software, as well as prepared estimates, photos of the plants I’ve chosen and other pertinent materials to their project.

When I meet with them again at the nursery, I like to have every aspect of the project prepared so that I can easily

answer their questions and show them any plant material they may not be familiar with.

3 P.M. I sometimes forget that I have to actually take a moment to draw the landscapes!

A full-scale, detailed landscape design for a typical property can take me up to four hours to prepare from start to finish.

I tend to do designs in the order in which I met with the clients which keeps me on schedule. I draw and install more than 300 designs per year, so organization is key!

6 P.M. I head home for the day to hang out in my own backyard with my husband and boys or catch a baseball game – either the Geneva Vikings or the Chicago Cubs.

Busby took a beloved, 16-year-old shop and – in a matter of months – recreated its business plan so that, today, Wool and Co. serves as both a retail store and creative hub for the knitting community.

The 40-year-old St. Charles resident had worked in corporate marketing until six years ago when she decided to turn over a fresh leaf and become a Pilates instructor.

She was still teaching Pilates last July when she stopped by Wool and Co. and discovered that Lesley Edmondson – the shop owner who had taught Busby to knit a few years earlier – was getting out of the business.

“I focused on making it less like a retail store and more like going over to a friend’s house – a friend who has over 10,000 skeins of yarn,” Busby says.

At the same time, she wanted the shop to be beautiful, vibrant and full of energy. Somehow,

“What makes us different is that we’re not just a retail shop; we have a communal spirit,” says Busby. “We’re a welcoming place that offers a slew of services.”

Customer Noreen Cashman of Wayne agrees that it’s a “wonderful, welcoming place.”

“You walk in there, and it’s like a kid in a candy store; it’s like a wonderland, just [with] the colors and the particular yarns that Angela actually stocks. She has impeccable taste. And everything is so organized. It’s so easy to find what you’re looking for … . You can make a cup of tea and just sit and knit.”

Throughout the entire purchase/renovation process, Busby’s underlying motivation was to further the craft of knitting and crocheting.

Though the former Wool and Co. and its staff were a wonderful addition to the St. Charles downtown area, the overhaul to the shop has been a success, says five-year customer Mary Ellen Masson.

“It was a cozy, multi-roomed shop, a little cluttered, but that was part of its charm,” says the St. Charles resident. “You kind of had to know what yarn you wanted when you went in … . The big difference [now] is it’s so open and airy in there. They really do want you to come in during open knit times.”

The new shop owners are a “breath of fresh air,” Masson adds.

“They make you happy when you walk in there,” Masson says. “[Angela Busby] clearly loves what she’s doing with this.”

There’s been a resurgence in knitting and crocheting, for various reasons, says Busby.

More young people are becoming interested in yarn and knitting, falling in love with the creative process that allows them to choose vibrant colors and patterns to make clothing, felted objects and other

“I just finished teaching eight teenage girls how to knit,” says assistant manager Laura Keiken. [The teenage girls’] generation [is] trying to reconnect with [its] roots a bit more. Millennials are bucking the trend and not wanting to be materialistic and consumeristic. They’re being more conscious about how they spend their time and money … and knitting’s kind of part of that.”

Younger generations are helping make shops like Wool and Co. all the more valuable, she says.

As it is with most retail establishments, competing with the online market can be difficult, but – with online shopping – you often lose that connection with people and the products, says Keiken.

“You don’t get the customer service part … [no one is] helping you fix a mistake or helping you try something new. That’s where the knitting shops are still important.”

For years, Masson’s niece, Amy, has travelled from Madison, Wisconsin, just to peruse the stock at Wool and Co. with her aunt. During her last visit, she ventured into the new store.

“She said, ‘I’m never going home,’” Masson says.

“She had basic knitting down, but she loved the fact that she could come in with me [and knit]. I think it was Laura that got her started on actually knitting [a cowl]. She felt so successful, within a couple days, she called and said, ‘Aunt Mary Ellen, could you get me some more [yarn]?’ Which was great, because it gave us another opportunity to get together and sit and knit.’”

■ Wool and Co. has an in-store computer available to customers to log on to Ravelry – a social networking site for the knit and crochet community – that enables customers to access their accounts in order to save new ideas and find new patterns on which to work.

Knitting also is a calming activity that requires the brain to focus on a repetitive movement, which often helps those with anxiety or depression escape their thoughts, Keiken says. Many people knit as a stress reliever, especially during difficult times.

Whatever their reason for picking up needles, Busby is happy for the support she’s received.

Anna Bonick helps rescued retrievers find fur-ever homes

F

or some, the Labrador retrievers Anna Bonick works with may seem like lost causes, but to her each of them has a name, a face and a story that she’ll never forget.

Bear had lived his life in a puppy mill and could barely walk; and Goofy was sweet but, with his behavioral problems, needed a lot of training.

In all, Bonick fostered 30 dogs, finding each of them a forever home.

“It was a challenge, but I’m always up for a challenge,” says Bonick.

The Batavia resident started fostering rescue dogs in 2010. She says it was something she had always wanted to do and jumped in when she had an opportunity to help.

Bonick was born in Poland, and her family immigrated to the Chicago area when she was 5 years old. Growing up, her parents wouldn’t allow her to have a dog, but that didn’t sway Bonick from her adoration for canines.

“I always loved dogs,” she says. “I would read about dogs, go to the dog show.”

While attending DePaul University in Chicago, she found an opportunity to volunteer with Chicago Animal Care & Control, where she loved working with dogs. She made a pledge to herself that once she had a house with a yard, she would find a way to foster dogs.

Her first fosters were Bear and Maggie, a pair of Labrador Retrievers. Both had been rescued from a puppy mill. Each dog was around 6 years old and in very poor health. Bonick used her own money to pay the mounting vet bills to care for the dogs and was able to find families to adopt each dog.

Bonick’s interest in caring for dogs eventually brought her to Midwest Labrador Retriever Rescue. In addition to fostering dogs, she became a member of the board of directors for the organization.

Bonick has a full-time job at Pampered Chef, and she works as a foster parent to rescue dogs in her spare time, all while caring for her own dogs.

When one of her dogs needed training beyond her abilities, she called on Amber Walker of Animal Intuitions, a fellow Batavia resident.

Walker was able to help Bonick by using the positive reinforcement method of training for the dog. Walker says she saw how Bonick made a wonderful connection to the dogs she cared for and trained.

“Anna is able to recognize what is in the dog’s best interest,” Walker says.

When Bonick saw her dogs needed more stimulation, she took her dogs to Lucky Dog Academy in Plainfield where they underwent agility training. Bonick says that she saw her fearful dog become confident and truly enjoy the training.

Today, Bonick makes time to teach agility training at the academy, herself.

Bonick admits that her work as a foster hasn’t been easy, but she is always excited to see the dogs she fosters go to their forever homes.

Saying goodbye to the dogs is often an emotional process, but some of the adoptive families keep in touch with letters and photos.

“It was worth every bit of work,” Bonick says.

Of the 30 foster dogs Bonick has cared for, she only adopted two: Archie (No. 13) and Lilly (No. 30).

“I have learned so much about what I am capable of. And, I have met really amazing people.”

While her fostering has saved the lives of many dogs, Bonick says that fostering has changed her life, too.

“I have learned so much about what I am capable of,” Bonick says. “And, I have met really amazing people.”

From sledding and ice-skating to wintry trailblazing, the park district offers a plethora of options for outdoor fun Only a bear would want to hibernate during the winter in St. Charles.

From sledding hills and skating rinks to miles of open space perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, the St. Charles Park District is a winter haven for those wanting to head out rather than stay in.

With the rinks prepared, Goodrich and his staff also monitor conditions optimal for snow sledding, snow shoeing and other winter activities.

“We want to see a uniform covering of snow,” says Goodrich. “If we can see grass showing through on about half of a sled hill, we’ll close it so no one gets injured trying to sled or snowboard on grass.”

Though one’s inclination may be to hunker down and wait out the cold until spring, experts say that the best way to shake off the winter blues – and burn some calories while you’re at it – is to get outside.

Snowboarding and sledding are permitted at Langum Park on the hill facing Route 25, and at Timber Trails Park.

Outdoor activities can help release the “happy hormones” related to adrenaline, and just 15 minutes of exposure to sunlight can help supply the body with the vitamin D necessary to build strong bones.

Cross-country skiing can be done along any of the walking trails maintained by the park district.

Popular spots for snowshoeing are Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive, and Primrose Farm, 5N726 Crane Road. The park district offers pairs of aluminum-framed, adult-size snowshoes and plastic, child-size snowshoes for rental.

So, where should you go and what should you do?

To help make the winter melt away, swap out your sneakers for a pair of ice skates and head over to any one of four ice skating rinks maintained by the St. Charles Park District.

Ice-skating is available at Davis, Lincoln and Timber Trails parks. Ice hockey can be played at Langum Park. Rinks are open daily, and have lights available until 9 p.m. for those who prefer an evening skate.

The park district began prepping the rinks in November, according to Jeff Goodrich, assistant superintendent of parks.

“To begin freezing water for the outdoor rinks, we need about three consecutive days where the temperature stays at 15 degrees or lower with no snow in the forecast,” says Goodrich.

Main St., St. Charles The Greater Chicago Soap Box Derby Association will host an official Indoor All-American Soap Box Derby Race, located at the west end of the lower level of the Charlestowne Mall. Participants will race to earn points to qualify as a Regional Rally Champ to compete in the 2017 championship race in Ohio.

Those who are accompanied by a parent or guardian can take a free test run down the track. Several club cars will be available – on a first-come-first-served basis – to anyone interested in racing. THE 56TH ANNUAL ALL BREED BENEFIT CAT SHOW WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, and Sunday, Feb. 26 WHERE: Kane County Fairgrounds 525 S. Randall Road, St. Charles Lincoln State Cat Club will host its 56th annual All Breed Benefit Cat Show, which will feature 225 cats competing for “Best in Show.� Speakers will present topics on feline health. There will be numerous vendors and shelters with cats available for adoption.
