No injuries reported in local river rescues

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Emergency officials responded to two river rescues Sunday – the first happened late morning in Geneva and was followed a few hours later by a tipped kayak in St. Charles.

Neither resulted in injuries, offi-

cials said.

Geneva Fire Battalion Chief Kevin Swanson said a canoe’s occupant or occupants somehow went in the Fox River near the Fabyan Parkway bridge but “self-rescued.”

In St. Charles, a man was rescued by a private boat when his kayak tipped in the Fox River, St. Charles

Fire Battalion Chief Marty Friel said.

The man was brought ashore at Boy Scout Island.

Noting that boater safety classes are available, Swanson encouraged boaters to follow all standard safety precautions.

“Proper personal protective equipment is always a must,” he said.

Owners outline new vision for Charlestowne Mall

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The owners of Charlestowne Mall have better defined what the future might hold for the struggling shopping center.

During the City Council meeting Monday, St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina read a statement about the mall’s redevelopment status from The Krausz Companies after noting that many people on social media have asked about Charlestowne recently.

He described it as a “legitimate question.”

The Krausz Companies envision a new development incorporating retail, dining, entertainment and residential uses.

“The vision moving forward is to develop a mixed-use project which will build on the strength of the existing retail anchors, Von Maur, Carson’s and Classic Cinema theater by adding a residential component that reflects the values and high standards of the neighborhood and the community,” Daniel Krausz of The Krausz Companies wrote in

a statement.

“The Krausz Companies has been working with the city staff to further develop plans that the city of St. Charles and the adjacent residential community can embrace.”

Krausz indicated plans will be shared by presenting a revised concept plan to the City Council in the near future.

Construction on Cooper’s Hawk Winery is scheduled to begin in July, with the grand opening slated for spring 2017, he wrote.

“The addition of Cooper’s Hawk has generated further interest in the project from other food and entertainment users, with additional tenants in final lease negotiation and announcements expected in the near future,” Krausz wrote.

Additionally, Carson Pirie Scott is adding furniture to its merchandise at Charlestowne and is developing plans to remodel the store, Krausz wrote.

He noted that Classic Cinemas also plans to undergo a remodeling, which will include upgrades to its seats and the installation of a new public entrance.

Naperville man hurt in Blackberry Twp. crash

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – A 55-year-old Naperville man suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday when the pickup truck he was driving went off of the road and flipped over, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Hughes Road west of Bunker Road in Blackberry Township. It involved a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Keith Carlson of the 900 block of Fairway Drive, the release stated.

Carlson was traveling east on Hughes Road and – for an unknown reason – drove onto the south shoulder, then crossed over both lanes of Hughes Road, drove up an embankment on the north side of

the road, then flipped over, according to the release.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, first was transported to Delnor Hospital in Geneva and then was eventually flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with potential life-threatening injuries, states the release.

A hospital spokeswoman said late Monday that there was no information about Carlson to release at that time but that there might be more information available on Tuesday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Kane County Sheriff’s Office detectives and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team. Deputies had not yet determined as of Monday afternoon whether drugs, alcohol, speed or texting played a role in the crash, states the release.

Police say putting down cellphone requires ‘conscious effort’ from drivers

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Brad Wicks, a traffic officer with the Batavia Police Department, doesn’t sugarcoat his opinion of distracted driving: He views it as a real problem for all drivers.

As of March 24, Batavia officers this year have made more than 60 traffic stops for distracted driving violations, Wicks wrote in an email, noting that each of the last two years averaged about 300 stops for such offenses.

“The number of violations I observe both on and off duty is astounding,” Wicks wrote, adding that the most common examples of distracted driving are texting and handheld phone conversations.

“It may not seem like a big deal to some, but when a driver decides to look away to read a text, or check their social media, they are missing out on what’s happening on the roadway over those several dozen or hundreds of feet they travel in that time.”

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

By now, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said, drivers in Illinois should know it’s illegal to use a cellphone while driving – which includes texting – unless they use a hands-free device.

But, she acknowledged, some choose not to follow that law, which took effect in 2014.

“It’s hard to put that phone away,” Nash said. “It’s hard to not text. People have to make a conscious effort of it.”

Geneva police “aggressively enforce” the law because of the danger it poses to motorists, she said, adding that people can do multiple tasks at once but can focus only on one at a time.

According to Geneva police, the year-to-date total of cellphone-related distracted driving offenses has reached 10 tickets and 42 warnings in Geneva, while last year saw 124 tickets and 249 warnings – down from 176 tickets and 429 warnings in 2014.

Meanwhile, the St. Charles Police Department reported that 313 tickets and warnings were issued in 2015 after a spike of 710 in 2014, which was up from 260 in 2013.

Wicks wrote that it is difficult to get statistical data on distracted driv-

ing because, like seat belt use, it is a matter of self-reporting. He believes it is a “grossly under-reported” issue, he wrote.

“If an individual is at a red light, on their phone, and they hit the gas believing traffic has begun flowing, and they then crash into stopped traffic, [it’s] very difficult to prove that cellphone use without self-admission or an examination of the phone’s records,” Wicks wrote.

According to the National Safety

Council, drivers talking on cellphones – whether hand-held or hands-free – are four times as likely to be involved in an accident.

The council recently released survey results indicating that 82 percent of Americans feel the most pressure from their families to drive distracted. About 54 percent also feel pressure from work, and 73 percent of teens feel pressure from their friends, the survey found.

“It is a sad irony that the people we love are actually jeopardizing our safety,” council President and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman stated in a release. “If you really care, don’t call to say, ‘I love you.’ Instead, encourage your family to set everything else aside, disconnect and focus only on the road.”

GENEVA – Aldermen on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Michael Antenore, a 20-year veteran firefighter, as Geneva’s next fire chief after the retirement of Fire Chief Steve Olson.

Olson will retire June 30, and Antenore, a paid-on-call firefighter, will begin his new duties Aug. 8, officials said.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Einwich will manage the department on an interim basis, offiMichael cials said.

“I started when I was 34 Antenore years old, working with a bunch of 18-year-olds,” Antenore said. “I tried not to get killed. I spent 33 years at my other employment. I have to make a phone call tonight. It’s bittersweet.”

Antenore currently is director of marketing for Nalco, an Ecolab Co., in Naperville.

Antenore said he grew up in Elgin and has lived in Geneva 24 years.

Speaking about his career, Olson said he has worked for six mayors, four city administrators – but he lost count of how many aldermen.

“I’ve worked with stellar people,” Olson said. “You’ve got a very good department.”

As for his rise from a paid-on-call firefighter to chief, Olson said he benefited from the counsel of good mentors.

“I’ve been very fortunate,” Olson said. “I learned from older members of the department. They gave me their counsel. Mike [Antenore] has been one of my muses.”

Antenore’s wife, Mary, said she is looking forward to having him home more often with the new appointment.

“I’m thrilled,” she said.

Antenore has been a member of the fire department’s hazardous materials team and as the public information officer, leading the 201520 strategic planning process and being active in public outreach programs, officials said.

Antenore began as a paid-on-call firefighter in 1996, working his way up to lieutenant/ emergency medical technician in 2005, officials said.

Artists have created pictures of naked women for centuries and many of the paintings and sculptures are now displayed in museums or homes. But some collectors are more interested in “naughties,” a group of 3- to 6-inch-long bisque figurines made from about 1910 to 1940. The women were posed as if lounging on a beach. Some were made with colored bathing suits and slippers, some wore nothing but a removable lace bathing suit. The others were made for a shelf. The women had angelic tinted faces and often mohair wigs and fabric caps.

There were even mermaids, which were popular as an underwater feature in a fish tank. They represent the erotica of an earlier period. Most of the “naughties” or “nudies” were made in Germany by Hertwig & Co., Limbach or Galluba & Hoffman. A 3 1/2-inch seated lady with a tulle swimsuit made about 1910 sold at a Theriault’s auction two years ago for $684. Prices are lower in 2016.

world or are used as banks or even games. Most are made by J. Chien or Ohio Art Co., both manufacturers of toys since the 1930s. I can now afford some better globes. What should I look for?

A: Globes have been made since the days of the ancient Greeks, but probably the earliest known today is a Nuremberg globe. It was finished in 1493, but soon became outdated because it had an empty ocean where the American continents would soon be reported. You probably can find many American globes made in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The first U. S. globe maker was James Wilson and he cleverly made his globes an inch larger than the British competition, advertising that his were bigger and better. Look for 1930s to 1940s globes made

by Rand McNally, Weber Costello, Cram, Hammond or Replogle. After World War II, the boundaries of countries changed so often that it makes it easy to date your globes.

Today, changing boundaries and country names are an even greater problem for globemakers, but they help the collector looking for vintage globes.

A: In 1871 Franz Detleff Goebel and his son, William, founded F. & W. Goebel in Oeslau (now Rodental), Germany, to make slates, slate pencils and toy marbles. They also inspired the name “Brownie” for young Girl Scouts, and many games, dolls, dishes and other collectibles. Wdowicki, 83, died of a hemorrhagic stroke, said his son, Philip Wdowicki. “It is our intention to continue doing services for 9/11 as long as we are living here,� Philip Wdowicki said of the memorial garden his father created in their yard. “When he moved out here, that was his one big thing to do in his lifetime – to make this memorial and not to let anybody forget about it,� his son said.

A carpenter who owned his own cabinet-making business, Paul Wdowicki grew up in Chicago. He later became a volunteer firefighter for the Glenview Fire Department, where he served for about 15 years, his son said. “He was very dedicated to the fire department here in Elburn,� Philip

His baking hobby started when the family encouraged him to try kneading bread as a way to help his arthritis, Philip Wdowicki said. “From that point on, he started making various kinds of bread,â€? his son said. “He made potica – pronounced pat-tee-za – which is a family tradition. It’s like a coffee cake my grandmother ‌ used to make. They would get together around a big table and put in the filling – honey, walnuts, raisins.â€?

Fire damages home in Sugar Grove SUGAR GROVE – Nobody was injured Sunday in a residential fire that caused an estimated $350,000 in damage, Sugar Grove Fire Protection District Chief Bill Perkins said.

Firefighters responded at 2:21 p.m. to 1270 Dorr Drive after the residents saw smoke coming from the home and went inside to discover

an upstairs bedroom was on fire, he said.

Most of the fire damage was contained to the bedroom of origin, the attic and the outside wall space near the bedroom, he said, adding that smoke damage pervaded the house.

Damage was estimated at $200,000 to the structure and $150,000 to the contents, Perkins said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.

China’s buying spree THE WASHINGTON POST Chinese President Xi Jinping has a problem related to his nation’s growing demand for high-quality food and other agricultural products. In December 2013, Xi declared a strategic goal for China: to seize “the commanding heights in biotechnology,” in areas such as genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It must “not let large foreign companies dominate the agricultural biotechnology product market,” he said.

However, China is still years behind the United States and Europe in research and development.

One way to square the circle would be to import products from the West to keep Chinese consumers supplied while hoping that the bracing stimulus of foreign competition would impel Chinese firms to catch up. Xi’s government implied such an approach at a U.S.-China high-level trade meeting in Guangzhou in November, which produced a promise that U.S. exporters would henceforth face a regulatory “process based on international standards” and “science” when they tried to sell in the Chinese market – as opposed to the rejection that had met nine out of 12 GMO varieties U.S. companies submitted for approval in recent years.

Now comes word, however, of a bid by China’s state-owned chemical company to buy Swiss-based Syngenta, suggesting that Beijing has a rather different strategy in mind: to buy the Western biotech it can’t develop on its own – and give one particular importer favored access to China’s huge market.

The strategic value China places on the deal is obvious from the price tag: $43 billion, the largest Chinese foreign investment ever. After paying so much for Syngenta, will China grant approval to a GMO made by Dow or Monsanto if its own captive company offers a similar product?

As is so often the case with Chinese mercantilism, it is hard to specify what the United States could do to counter this move. Raising the specter of Chinese control over Syngenta’s large U.S. subsidiary, which supplies 10 percent of U.S. soybean seeds and 6 percent of corn, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, has called for the U.S. commission that scrubs foreign investment deals for national security concerns to let the Agriculture Department weigh in on this one, and perhaps others. That might help – or create a precedent for defining investment-related security concerns beyond traditional law enforcement, military and intelligence considerations, with unintended consequences for the free flow of capital to the United States.

What is clear is that China has embarked on a buying spree of foreign firms, $92 billion worth so far this year, with motives that range from commercial to nationalistic – to murky, as was the case with the bid for Starwood hotels by Anbang, a previously unheralded Chinese insurance conglomerate with ties to the Deng Xiaoping family but, according to news accounts, no one answering its headquarters telephone. If China deploys its cash to create jobs in the West, well and good. But given the nontransparent and cronyistic nature of Chinese companies, both state-owned and “private,” there may be risks, too, of a kind not posed by investment from democratic allies such as Japan, say, or Germany. The United States needs a new approach to account for the new reality.

out last month, but not before it did a lot of good for animals.

An unabashed dog lover who was especially devoted to his dog Shep, which he rescued in Hawaii, Garry lent his tremendous comedic talents to PETA’s “Stand Up for Animals” benefit show to support PETA’s efforts to rescue and care for farmed animals.

He also served as an honorary committee member at PETA’s 1996 Animals Ball and Humanitarian Awards

Gala, which raised money to support PETA’s campaigns against the abuse of animals in the clothing, entertainment, experimentation and farming industries.

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel expressed the sentiments of many with this tweet: “Garry Shandling was as kind and generous as he was funny and that is saying a lot.”

‘Playing my game and learning’ Geneva’s Lillibridge content with first USHL season

Graham Lillibridge expects several friends and family to attend Friday’s Chicago Steel game against the visiting Muskegon (Michigan) Lumberjacks.

The Lumberjacks will make their third and final trip to the Fox Valley Ice Arena this season, and each has featured the Geneva-bred Lillibridge at a different stage of his junior hockey career.

Just two months removed from his 17th birthday, Lillibridge enters the final week of the USHL regular season with 45 games under his belt and a measure of unquantifiable confidence.

“I’m playing a whole lot more and really feeling good about everything,” Lillibridge said, “especially with being the young guy.”

Lillibridge signed a tender with the Lumberjacks about a year ago after shifting his athletic focus solely to hockey.

The former Geneva boys golf standout is staying with a billet family in Norton Shores, Michigan, while balancing hockey with his junior year of high school.

A Yale commit, Lillibridge attends Mona Shores High School with eight Muskegon teammates.

There’s a slight cult of celebrity attached to players in the hallway, but Lillibridge works to keep on top of his responsibilities on and off the ice.

“Being that we are with the Lumberjacks, I mean, everyone in the school pretty much knows who we are, and we’re kind of put on a pedestal,” he said. “So the school takes good care of us, and the teachers are pretty good about us missing school and everything. I’ve had no problems with the school. It’s been an easy adjustment, and social life has been good.”

Lillibridge’s hockey existence has flourished, too, as team officials have evaluated his developing talent as the season progressed.

In the early stages, including the Lumberjacks’ 3-2 overtime victory at the Fox Valley Ice Arena on Nov. 6, he occasionally skated on special teams or when the team faced late deficits.

While St. Francis shook off the rust after a two-week lull in its schedule, Geneva was still getting used to a new lineup after graduating all but one starter last season.

Geneva made progress working as a unit on the court, but ultimately couldn’t stop St. Francis in the Spartans’ 25-22, 25-27, 25-20 victory.

“We did a very nice job for having such a young team,” first-year Geneva coach Stephanie Rasmussen said. “I only have a couple of returning players this year, so for them as a whole unit I think we need to work on just finishing the game as a team and not playing as individuals.”

“It was a typical early-season game. We knew it was going to be a battle,” St. Francis coach Mike Lynch said. “Geneva and St. Francis always have a great match. We thought it was going to go three games. Both teams settled down after the first game. It was back and forth with a lot of mistakes on both sides

Smart with the puck, plays good defense. As time goes on, like anything, he’ll get better and more comfortable, but he’s had a good start right now.”

Once the Lumberjacks passed the midseason point, Lillibridge found his minutes and lineup presence grew. He fell in line with a roster that no longer was in flux.

The increased experience allowed him to truly familiarize himself with the USHL, the lone Tier I junior hockey league in the United States.

Until this season, Lillibridge operated merely on research and hearsay about the league. The Steel, after all, were based in Bensenville before relocating to Geneva in the summer of

Nervousness was apparent on both sides in the first set. The Vikings jumped out to any early 5-0 lead, scoring most of the points on Spartan hitting errors. After a timeout, St. Francis went on a 10-1 run, also capitalizing on Geneva miscues to take a 10-6 lead. The Vikings tied the game at 22-all on a Spartan hitting error. St. Francis responded with three straight kills to win the set.

The second set was a more hotly contested game that featured 13 ties and neither team taking a lead of more than three points. A Jonathan Bishop spike, one of his 12 kills, tied the game for the last time at 25all. Geneva (5-5) earned its last two

points on St. Francis errors.

The Vikings took an early lead in the last set but were unable to put any distance between them and St. Francis (2-0). A Brian Baumgartner ace put Geneva up 17-16, but the Spartans rallied to close out the game with a 9-2 run.

Matt Johnston earned nine kills for Geneva. Teammate Joshua Haston had 24 digs.

Lillibridge stays in regular contact with his parents, Craig and Sue. He said he plans to return to Muskegon next season as he finishes high school and continues preparing for the transition to college hockey.

Lillibridge said he feels fortunate that the Lumberjacks’ coach, Todd Krygier, and general manager, John Vanbiesbrouck, enjoyed extended NHL careers as a forward and goaltender, respectively.

Even absorbing hockey stories on bus trips or at the rink can be important currency in his development.

Chicago Steel forward Haralds Egle, a 19-year-old Latvian native shown competing in Friday’s 1-0 loss to Bloomington at the Fox Valley Ice Arena, recently became the team’s 16th college-committed player. Egle will continue his hockey career at NCAA Division I Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. In a statement, Egle said he was impressed with the way Clarkson “strives in athletics and academically,” indicating that the school represented his best fit. The Steel have three regular-season games remaining this weekend, including two at the Fox Valley Ice Arena.

Tools help those with arthritis Dear Dr. K: Age and arthritis have done a number on my hands. I’d like to continue cooking, eating and dressing independently, but it’s getting harder. Any advice?

Dear Reader: Many years ago, I had a patient who taught me the importance of what I’m about to tell you. She was in her late 70s, retired, widowed and lived alone.

She had been extremely independent all of her life. However, with age her dexterity and fine motor skills had diminished. In addition, the combination of arthritis and a small stroke had made cooking and grooming difficult.

One day she came into my office and sat down, in her usual regal way. I asked her how she was doing, and she suddenly burst into tears: “I’m useless, just useless.”

I referred her to a physical and occupational therapist, who told her (and me) about a variety of tools available to help perform everyday activities. Indeed, there are more such tools today than there were then. Most cost less than $50 or $100, and they are widely available in drugstores, medical supply stores and online.

I spoke to geriatrician Dr. Suzanne Salamon, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, about devices she recommends to her patients: • Eating tools. Weighted eating utensils – forks, knives and spoons – make it easier for people with hand tremors to get food to their mouths. The weight cuts down on the amount of hand shaking, which keeps food on the utensil. If your wrist or arm dexterity is diminished, try curved eating utensils, which are twisted to adjust to your grip.

• Skid-control plates and bowls have high sides and rubber rings or bottoms. These enable you to push food against the side of the bowl or plate to load your fork or spoon.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Cooking tools. If your grip strength isn’t what it once was, a bottle or jar opener makes a big difference. One-handed tools also are helpful if a stroke or injury prevents two-handed cooking and food prep. For example, a one-handed vegetable brush with suction cups on the bottom allows you to rub vegetables against it to clean them.

• Household tools. One of the most helpful household tools is a grabber. This long-handled tool has pincers at the end to grab anything that’s out of reach. I used one of these when I was recovering from hip replacement surgery and could not bend down much. It really helped.

You also can buy large covers to fit over doorknobs or lamp switches, making them easier to turn. Or buy book holders that let you read hands-free.

• Personal grooming. If it’s difficult for you to reach down, behind or above your body, it can be difficult to groom yourself.

Look for long-handled and curved versions of hairbrushes and combs, toenail clippers and shoehorns. Substitute an electric toothbrush for your manual one. And look into the many tools that are available to help with dressing, such as zipper pulls and shirt buttoners.

Several of these tools restored my patient’s ability to be independent and her self-confidence. I’m sure they can help you.

Teens: The big history exam is tomorrow, and you’re not really prepared. Would you cheat to pass this test? How about your friends? Would they cheat?

A University of Texas study found more than 40 percent of high school and college students admit to cheating in some form.

The main reasons the students gave for cheating were: fear of failing, being too lazy to study, parental pressure to get good grades and the fact cheating is easy.

Some schools that operate on the “honor system” (teachers not in the room during exams, students permitted to take the exam out of the room) allow lazy or “ambitious” students to take unhealthy advantage of this trust.

Dwight Huber, chairman of the English department at Amarillo (Texas) High School and a participant in the study, blamed the rise in classroom cheating partly on the way students are evaluated. He feels as long as teachers give short-answer tests rather than essay questions and grade by the number of facts they can memorize rather than by how well they can synthesize information, students will try to beat the system.

“The concept of cheating is based on the false assumption that the system is legitimate and there is something wrong with the individual who’s doing the cheating,” he said. “That’s too

Three weeks after we were married, my sister saw Ken at a movie with his old girlfriend, and things went downhill after that.

I’m almost 18 years old now, but I feel like I’m an old woman.

I truly love my baby girl, but she is the only good thing that came from our unfortunate marriage. I now am divorced, have a parttime job and live with my parents, who are wonderful grandparents to my daughter.

Look at the North hand. What would you do after South opens one diamond, and West overcalls one spade?

Decades ago, double was for penalty. Then, North would probably have bid three no-trump. But after a spade lead, the contract would have had no chance, going down two. Now, though, North can make a negative double to show four hearts (the unbid major) and some eightplus points (or six or seven if he really likes his hand). He might hold five or even six hearts and too few points to respond two hearts, but that is rare. South, over his partner’s double, shows his heart support, and four hearts should be reached.

After West leads the spade queen, how should the play proceed?

South should see four potential losers: one spade (on the third round), two hearts and one club.

But there are discards available on diamonds.

Declarer takes the first trick on the board and runs the heart 10.

West wins with the queen and perseveres with spades. Now South must change tack. He wins in the dummy, cashes the diamond ace, overtakes the diamond queen with his king, and plays the diamond jack, discarding the spade seven from the dummy.

Then declarer leads another trump.

Shortly thereafter, he will claim, having lost only two hearts and one club.
