COLOR VISION DEFICIENCY In the strictest sense, the term “color blind” only applies to people who experience complete color blindness (“monochromacy”) and do not see any color at all. The clarity of their vision (visual acuity) may also be affected. The “color vision deficiency” that is popularly referred to as “red-green color blindness” affects as many as eight percent of men and 0.5 percent of women with Northern European ancestry.

“Blue-yellow color blindness” is more rare than red-green color blindness. Whichever the case may be, the eye care professional can diagnose color vision deficiency using a variety of tests, the most common of which is the Ishihara Color Test, the most often used test for red-green color blindness.

William Bolcom – a Pulitzer Prizeand Grammy Award-winning composer and pianist – and his wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris, are expected to perform April 16, the release stated.

Tickets are $100 for the private concert, which will be at the historic Wildrose Mansion, 4N262 Route 31, St. Charles. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 6 p.m., with performances following at 7:30 p.m.

The event also will feature a California-based chamber music ensemble featuring St. Charles native pianist Jeffrey LaDeur, Canadian-born violinist Liana Berube and American cellist Michelle Kwon, the release stated.

Can you escape The Room?

Writer uses skills to launch team adventure game business in Batavia

But when the 42-year-old screenwriter moved with her husband from Pennsylvania to Elgin last year, that changed.

One of the first things Arne did in Illinois was visit an “escape” room, a term that, in this case, describes both a brick-and-mortar establishment, as well as a hands-on, team adventure game housed inside it. While locked in the escape room, Arne and her teammates tried to solve puzzles and find clues to escape the room before time ran out.

Arne failed to escape – not uncommon, as most escape rooms have a 30 percent success rate, she said – but she fell in love with the idea. Only one thing lacked from the concept.

“I’m a writer, so I thought, ‘This would be so much better if there was a story involved,’” she said.

Arne put her writing skills to work to create a storyline for a Victorian murder mystery room – a hybrid of a traditional escape room and a murder mystery dinner, she said. Instead of trying to escape the room, players work to solve puzzles to uncover the murderer.

Even after coming up with her plot, Arne wasn’t interested in business ownership. But after receiving encouragement from Dave Zajicek of The Room Lisle, she had a change of heart, found a space in downtown Batavia and is now slated to open The Room Fox Valley on Friday.

“It just seemed like doors kept opening,” she said. “At some point, [I thought], ‘Something will stop me from doing this.’ But that never happened … . It’s something people are hungry for; it’s meeting a need.”

Located at 160 S. Water St., right next to Water Street Studios, The Room Fox Valley has a prime location, said Jamie Saam, executive director of Batavia MainStreet. Not only will it draw those looking for entertainment after a meal in downtown Batavia, but it could pull in regional patrons as well, she said.

Although escape rooms are fairly new, the idea is catching on, and not just with millennials, Arne said.

“I think it just seems to cut across age groups; it cuts across gender [lines],” Arne said. “It’s not just for the public; it’s also for corporations.

Instead, Simonian said he was trying to fulfill his responsibility as a steward of the taxpayers’ money, and that he was trying to save future jobs by asking employees to sacrifice a little now.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen wages and benefits rise while services are either cut or costs increase,” Simonian wrote in the email.

Those conditions, coupled with Illinois’ lack of a budget and its threat of cutting money to the city are what prompted his concern, Simonian wrote in the email.

Bruno said bringing up some of the budget issues in public session may have compromised the council’s relationship with the city staff.

“It is critical to our long-term success that we have a supportive and healthy environment for that staff,” Bruno said.

Burns acknowledged that “passions are obviously running high” on the city’s budget issues.

“My hope is that we can tone down the rhetoric and focus on the real issues and how we can best serve the community,” Burns said.

GENEVA – In an explanation that softened his tough stance on employee raises and benefits, 5th Ward Alderman Tom Simonian sent an email to Geneva workers in which he apologized and explained his position.

During budget discussions that took place March 14 and March 21, Simonian had called for the city to run like a business, for union contracts to be reopened to get concessions and for no raises in 2017, among other issues.

“All I’m asking is for wages to fall in line with the rest of the world,” Simonian said at the meeting. “We don’t have a responsibility to the employees here … other than to deliver to our shareholder, which is the taxpayer.”

Simonian also called for fairness, saying that because the rate of inflation was so low, it both was reasonable and fair that employees not get the raises that are in their contracts.

“If I, in any way, made you feel that I do not care and am not thankful for all you do for the city of Geneva and its citizens, I humbly apologize,” Simonian wrote in the email. “That was in no way what I even remotely meant or intended. I want you to know that I value, appreciate and

“We are good employees who [supported] the city when they made cuts to the budget during the recession,” the employee wrote. “We continued to give good service to the residents. …

Please stop Mr. Simonian from insulting employees.”

Bruno read a letter from a public works employee, who agreed with Simonian on linking raises to inflation.

School District 101 music education program receives national recognition

This is the second time in three years the Batavia district received this recognition.

District 101 is among 476 districts across the country receiving the award in 2016, according to the release.

The designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

“This designation just continues to prove that our students, staff, administration, and community members highly value music education in our schools,” fifth-grade band teacher Lisa Hatfield said in the release. “It is such an honor to be a part of something that brings Batavia together in such a fun and creative way, while enriching the lives of our students one note at a time.”

The award and the implementation of the federal law bring attention to the importance of keeping music education part of the school’s core instruction.

Causes for celebration With Easter behind us, I THE WRITE find myself eagerly glancing PLACE ahead on my wall calendar to see what special days lie Emma in store. Take a look at any Chrusciel Hallmark store and you’ll find most of the world seems to share a similar sentiment. It seems like we are always looking forward to the next cause for celebration, whatever it may be.

I’m right there with the rest of the world on this one, and it’s no surprise why. Holidays and other special events give us something exciting to anticipate, as well as an excuse to have fun with the important people in our lives.

Whether it’s with a party, a gift exchange or some other unique tradition you have, holidays provide an opportunity to break the monotony of day-to-day life with joy and togetherness.

We’ve obviously all heard of the “biggest” holidays – the ones like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day – that are celebrated across the country and, in some cases, around the world. These days and the ensuing celebrations are considered by many to be the epitome of holidays, from the family gatherings to the decorations to the gifts.

However, it doesn’t have to be Dec. 25 or Feb. 14 to have a special day. In fact, any average day can have meaning behind it if you look hard enough. For example, May 27 is National Grape Popsicle Day, and Aug. 6 is National Wiggle Your Toes Day. (I don’t know who comes up with these, but they’re certainly creative!) In fact, if you look today’s date up online, you’ll discover that it is both National Bunsen Burner Day and National Tater Day. Why not celebrate by reliving memories from a high school chem class and eating sweet potatoes? The food, at least, sounds pretty wonderful to me!

Or, if all that research into which national day it is seems like a bit too much work, how about a logical extension of what should already be a familiar day? In my family, we celebrate everyone’s half birthday – that is, six months after their birthday. Mine is in just a few short days, on April 2. (I will gladly accept gifts and cake!) Whoever’s half birthday it is gets to choose a special dessert for the entire family to enjoy. It’s a great way to enjoy some birthday fun throughout the year.

It may seem silly to add celebrations into days that one wouldn’t usually consider special. However, isn’t this what makes them all the more fun? As I’ve said, it’s the way holidays add variety to ordinary days that makes people look forward to them and even go out of their way to create new ones. I’m a firm believer that there is no cause too small for celebration, because everyone deserves to enjoy themselves for even the simplest reasons. Whether it’s a widely celebrated holiday or a half birthday, you may as well indulge yourself!

With that said, now it’s time for me to go do my chemistry homework. After all, it is National Bunsen Burner Day.

On encryption, no time to relax THE WASHINGTON POST Two legitimate interests of society were at war with each other in the fight between Apple and the FBI over the contents of a terrorist’s iPhone.

After seeking in court to compel Apple’s help in unlocking the phone, the FBI has pulled back, saying it found a way to obtain the data without Apple’s assistance. But the larger conflict over encryption of data and its impact on privacy and security is not yet sorted out and must not be neglected.

On one side, law enforcement authorities in the United States express a valid worry about the prospect of “going dark” – that manufacturers are building products that encrypt data, either on a network or on the device, in ways that are accessible only to a user, and thus off-limits to law enforcement

even with a court-approved warrant. They fear that this could provide a digital safe haven to criminals and terrorists.

On the other side, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook insists that any concession to government intrusion will weaken encryption for all users, at great risk to security and privacy. Cook sees encrypted data as a safeguard for the 99 percent of law-abiding users against proliferating cybersecurity threats.

Many consumers are demanding protection, especially after the Edward Snowden disclosures of government surveillance. Tech companies also argue they’ll be better able to protect free speech for billions of people in unfree societies such as China and Russia if they do not bow to U.S. government demands.

In the confrontation over

the San Bernardino, California, shooter’s phone, neither side gave ground from these positions. The conflict escalated rapidly without revealing any serious wiggle room. It was not a promising environment in which to make policy.

Apple did suggest during the debate, without endorsing any specific legislation, that perhaps Congress should take up the issue.

The company also expressed some openness to the establishment of a national commission of experts to determine whether the twin imperatives of privacy and security can both be met.

A commission might offer Congress suggestions to update federal laws governing communications that date from the analog age.

The FBI’s withdrawal from the court challenge offers a respite that should not be wasted.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

But not necessarily at a new Geneva business.

Doughocracy solves that problem, as everyone can get exactly what they want.

Since it opened Nov. 22, the fast-casual restaurant has been offering build-yourown pizzas that take away any disagreement at a table.

The pizzeria also offers several signature pizzas, as well as salads, beer and desserts. Co-owner Gabe Tucker, who has lived in Geneva for the past 15 years, said he just wanted to open a place that was a good fit for the downtown Geneva area.

“It seemed like the perfect place for a family like mine,” Tucker said. “You can go there and enjoy an evening with your family and have a pizza, or you can go with a date, have a beer and pizza.

I always wanted to be a part of that Third Street retail corridor, and it’s just awesome to be down there now. The community of Geneva and Tri-Cities area has been extremely supportive, and we’re extremely pleased with how it’s gone so far.”

A perk that Doughocracy offers its customers is a look at their pizzas being made from scratch. The dough is prepared in front of the customers, as are the fresh vegetables.

Tucker said he’s familiar with many restaurants saying they are “using better ingredients,” but he thinks that’s one thing that makes Doughocracy stand out.

“Well, first off, having the dough made right in front of the customers kind of allows them to be a part of the process.

It’s cool,” Tucker said. “I know everyone says that, but we really do use premium ingredients, like fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. It really comes down to getting the pizza made your way. What we try to

Although the build-your-own pizzas are a go-to for most customers – the menu

has no items exceeding $8.95 – Tucker couldn’t help but mention his favorite signature pie, the classic margherita pizza.

It is simply made with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and fresh basil.

Tucker said it may be made easily, but it allows the customer to taste what he feels brings them back for more.

“I think people really come back for that flavor profile,” Tucker said. “That’s your high-quality crust, tomato sauce and fresh mozzarella. Those are really ingredients that differentiate us and are probably our best assets.”

Tucker seems to be looking forward to the opportunity summer will bring, because that is when he can open up his patio for customers to enjoy craft beer, food and a beautiful night in downtown Geneva.

Including craft beer on the menu was something that Tucker – who called himself a “big fan” of Geneva’s Penrose Brewing Company – has always been passionate about. And because he has finally opened a place in the location he has always wanted, with the menu he’s been able to create, he feels strongly about the future of the pizzeria.

“It’s obviously very early, but we couldn’t be more pleased with the way it’s gone so far,” Tucker said. “We really just wanted to open a place that would fit in with downtown Geneva. This will be my first summer owning a place in downtown Geneva during the summer, and having the location we do is something I’m really looking forward to. We really wouldn’t be where we are [without] the support of the entire Tri-Cities area and community.”

Paramount Theatre’s ‘West Side Story’ soars

By ERIC SCHELKOPF planitkanenews@shawmedia.com On the heels of producing a sparkling version of “Hairspray,” the Paramount Theatre in Aurora has followed up with an equally strong production of the iconic musical “West Side Story.”

That the production is directed by Paramount Theatre artistic director Jim Corti, who recently received a Jeff Award for his direction of “Les Miserables, is not surprising. The Jeff Awards celebrate the vitality of Chicago area theater.

Just like he did with “Les Miserables,” Corti has injected freshness and excitement into a production that has long been in the public eye. Of course, that starts with the cast, and kudos to Corti for assembling such a strong ensemble – 23 of which are gracing Paramount’s stage for the first time.

Leading the cast are Zoe Nadal and Will Skrip, who play the star-crossed lovers Maria and Tony. Skrip was previously on the Paramount stage in “Mary Poppins,” while Nadal is new to the Paramount stage.

Nadal and Skrip are a joy to watch.

The chemistry between them is real, and they draw the audience into their

world from their very first scene together.

Mary Antonini – also a newcomer to the Paramount stage – also delivers a show-stopping performance as Anita.

Her feisty performance is a highlight of the production, and her vocal power delivers on all counts.

And the themes of the musical – which include the importance of being able to accept differences in others – are as relevant as today’s headlines.

Stunning choreography and scenery, along with an exhilarating performance by the Paramount Orchestra, add to making the Paramount’s production of “West Side Story” a thrilling experience.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North shortstop Allison Hausl struggled to twist the third base bag from its pegs after Wednesday’s softball game against Schaumburg.

Perhaps her sister, Sam, the North Stars’ catcher, still had a hex on it.

The early stages of North’s 8-5 loss to the Saxons featured a handful of sharp Sam Hausl throws that flummoxed the visitors, prompting Schaumburg to run itself into a few outs as North preserved a four-run lead.

“Picking off people is, like, my game, you know,” Hausl said. “That’s the one thing I can control. So when I’m playing, I always look for it. That’s what I’m best at, so whatever I can do to help my team, I like to look for that.”

North (1-1) utilized its speed to score A veteran lineup, which returns several supersectional qualifier, worked counts two runs in each of the first two innings. key parts from last season’s Class 4A capably against Saxons righty Paige Alt,

a familiar foe from the Rolling Meadows Sectional championship in June 2015.

Schaumburg (1-3) matched that offensive patience against North’s Jillian Waslawski but initially struggled to cash in. The Saxons’ frustrations reached an apex in the second inning, when a leadoff walk, fielder’s choice and double produced a second-and-third opportunity with no outs.

With catcher Brittney Butt batting, Hausl took charge by throwing behind the trail runner, Michelle Birkholz.

Allison Hausl grabbed the throw and rifled the ball to Sam Hausl, who then threw to third baseman Amanda James.

James tagged lead runner Natalie Napier out at third base before darting to nab Birkholz as she attempted to retreat to second base.

Building chemistry teams’ top priority in Myrtle Beach

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com While inclement weather threatened baseball and softball games around the Tri-Cities area Wednesday, a few programs didn’t have that worry.

St. Charles North, Kaneland and Burlington Central baseball, along with Kaneland softball have all headed east for spring break trips in sunny Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Not only is it a chance for teams to play good competition, but also to get away from distractions at home and build team chemistry before conference games begin.

The teams certainly are focusing on their business when on the field, but will make sure to enjoy their time off it as well.

“Our big thing was getting these guys together away from Illinois,” Kaneland baseball coach Brian Aversa said. “You play some games, but really get that team-bonding aspect going on a trip like this. The families enjoy it, I know the players do, and we’re going to try and do something as a team away from baseball to build chemistry.”

Although Kaneland dropped its opener, 2-0 to Nitro (West Virginia), Aversa said the Knights were happy to be out in the sun and nice weather after having their first two games of the season postponed because of rain.

Schaumburg failed to score in the third inning, but its attack delivered routinely after that. Alt doubled to lead off the fourth, and a courtesy runner scored on Birkholz’s RBI single three batters later. Butt followed with a run-scoring double, her first of three consecutive hits against Waslawski and reliever Maddie Webb. A Schaumburg caught stealing ended the team’s rally at just one run in the fifth, but Schaumburg all but took base running out of the equation with a five-run outburst against Webb in the sixth.

“This trip is awesome for a number of reasons,” Genke said. All the team bonding and that stuff, with some of the traditions we do while we’re down here, but also to learn about ourselves.

You want to win any time you step on the field, I know the guys do, but you learn about the kind of team you have.

That Batavia series is one we circle every year, and to have a trip like this right before to learn, you know, who’s your best courtesy runner, or who can get guys out in what situation. That stuff can loom large in a three-game series.”

While Myrtle Beach certainly offers programs a break from reality, time off school and an opportunity to travel, both Aversa and Genke view it as an investment. They believe this will be a week they’ll be able to credit as a positive effect on how their season finishes.

North was on the winning end of its season opener Tuesday, a 1-0 win over Aynor (South Carolina), and coach Todd Genke knows this trip can mean much more than wins and losses come the end of the season.

“You can’t replicate a trip like this back home,” Genke said. “The guys are always together here, and the team-building things that you do down here build that chemistry that is essential in my mind to making a run later in the season. When you put a trip like this together, you honestly hope it goes as well as it’s already gone for us.

I think a big thing while you’re down here is to figure out the heartbeat of your team.”

Genke, who is constantly talking with other coaches from the South

Carolina area looking for more things to do with his team away from the field, made a point to have his players ride with different teammates each time they go anywhere.

Kaneland headed to Coastal Carolina University for a baseball game Tuesday night, and Aversa said the Knights are looking forward to having a miniature golf tournament during one of the days, as well.

No matter what either coach has planned, both made it well known they are extremely appreciative of the parents and families that came along for the trip and continue to help in any way they can.

“I really think the families love trips like this,” Aversa said. “It’s obviously important to get the team to bond with each other, but I think the program becomes closer, as a whole, because the families are around each other all week.”

“I think almost every player has at least one parent down here. It’s awesome,” Genke said. “They made our first game almost feel like a home game by packing the stands. It was pretty neat. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful parents and families within the North program, and I think it speaks volumes about how these kids are raised.”

When on the field, the experience is second to none. Not only are the fields “immaculate,” in Genke’s assessment,

started hitting it right at them.”

Schaumburg out-hit North, 13-8. The game actually ended on a play at the plate after Allison Hausl’s two-out RBI single when the North Stars attempted to score a second run. By that point, however, Poulin felt the team had allowed Alt to get into a groove by not challenging her or making her extend counts. He also pointed to some bangbang plays in the field where players could have displayed more confidence.

“That kind of carries a little bit more weight,” Poulin said. “When you make those mistakes late, you don’t have the time to come back from them.”

Admitting the magnitude and lineups had changed, Sam Hausl still figured Schaumburg was waiting far longer to strike after the way its 2015 season ended.

“I knew going into this game that they wanted it bad,” Hausl said. “I feel like we needed to have that happen to realize our weaknesses and what we need to work on. But I definitely think that if we can work on things and just come with good energy, that we have the ability to go as far as we did last year, if not further. But it’s definitely not a great feeling.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A nine-hour bus trip to Amherst, New York, awaited the Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association Midget 18U team Wednesday.

Players tried to relax as best they could during the final and most necessary barrier before the Geneva-based club begins the Youth Tier II national tournament today.

“There’s a lot of anticipation,” said center Dawson Marshall, a St. Charles North junior. “We’re all ready for it. We all hang out together and stuff, so we all get hyped up about it all the time. We feel like we can do some damage at nationals. We know we’re one of the best teams, if not the best team around, so hopefully we can do some good things.”

The Cyclones enter the tournament with a 40-9-6 record and a sense of urgency many years in the making.

A majority of the team shares a seasons-long bond that began during players’ developmental days as Cyclones mites and squirts at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

For instance, the top line of left wing Conner Bingham (Batavia), right wing Derek Struwing (South Elgin) and center Kyle Tintera (Glenbard North) typically has skated together for the past six years. It might even be more, as the group smiled while scanning its collective memory bank on the matter.

“I think we’re ready to go and compete and play,” Struwing said. “I know that our season’s been a pretty good one.

It started off a little rough and shaky and then we kind of got our legs under us and we’ve kind of just been rolling through. It’s been a lot of fun this year.”

After winning Thanksgiving and Martin Luther King, Jr. tournament championships during the regular season, the Cyclones earned a Central States Developmental Hockey League title for the second successive year.

That paved the way to this month’s Illinois Tier II state championship, which culminated in a 3-2 victory against the Sabres in the tournament finals.

Tintera, the Cyclones’ captain, said the team sweat through the tense final moments as the Sabres pulled their goaltender and threatened late in the Cyclones zone. Goaltender Sam Leckbee, a St. Charles North alumnus now attending Elgin Community College as he mulls the next step in his hockey career, ultimately preserved the lead by channeling his renewed resolve.

“When I first had started playing, I would kind of come to the rink and honestly mess around. I would just kind of laugh and joke before the games,” Leckbee said. “But now I kind of go off and do my own thing before. I’ve found what works for me. Everybody has their own kind of little thing to get them prepared.”

For Leckbee, that typically entails bouncing a ball against a wall to harness his hand-eye coordination, a fitting image for coach John Krall’s assessment of the Cyclones as “a very resilient

group.”

“We’re a team that doesn’t give up,” Marshall said. “It definitely helps if we get the lead early, but I know that if we go down one or two goals, we’re going to fight back. We have a team that can score a lot of goals. As long as we can put some in the net, we know we’ve got goalies to back us up and we’ve got a strong team.”

The Cyclones scored seven goals in their season opener Sept. 18 and have scored no fewer than three goals in 16 of their past 17 games.

The team, part of the 3A bracket in Tier II, begins its nationals run against Center State (New York) this afternoon.

Its opener Friday, against the Gulf Coast (Florida) Flames, begins at 8:15 a.m. local time.

“I personally had never even played for a state championship, let alone we’re all going to nationals,” Leckbee said. “So I think everybody’s pretty pumped up for that. It’s great for our organization, and we have a pretty good chance to win everything this year. It’s pretty cool.”

BRIEFS 24 SPORTS Cougars team store open this week

GENEVA – The Cougars’ newly-branded Cougars Den team store will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday through April 6.

The Cougars, a Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, are set to open their 26th season of baseball in Geneva at 6:30 p.m. April 7, when they host Clinton (Iowa).

When the store opens, it will be the first opportunity for Cougars fans to buy new apparel, gear, accessories and other items after the team rebranded its colors and visual identity in the offseason.

The online store, accessible through kccougars.com, has select items available, although new items will be arriving throughout the season.

The Cougars Den will feature items from such top apparel brands as Under Armour, Nike, Majestic, Antigua, Cutter Buck and Holloway, with offerings including T-shirts, hoodies and flannel pants.

“We’re really excited about all the new merchandise, and we’re sure the fans will be pleasantly surprised at

the quality and variety of products,” store manager Mike Polchopek said in a statement.

Rosary to host March Madness party

AURORA – Rosary High School Sports Boosters will hold a March Madness Party at 6 p.m. Monday at Ballydoyle, 28 W. New York Street, Aurora.

The event will include a silent auction, a super ticket drawing, tournament boards and the ability to watch the NCAA men’s basketball national championship from multiple locations throughout the party.

Super tickets are $25 a ticket or five for $100, with 10 cash prize payouts including a grand prize of $2,000. Buy a square on the $25 or $50 March Madness boards, and your numbers are good for all 67 games of the 2016 NCAA tournament.

New is the Championship Game Day board ($10/square) for the Monday championship game only. Four payouts of $125 each will be made during the game: Halftime and final score, and two surprise “score of the moment” drawings will be done during the course of the game.

Admission is $40 and includes a heavy appetizer buffet (6:30 to 8:30 p.m.) and select beer, wine and soft drinks (6 to 9 p.m.). You must be 21 years of age or older to attend.

Golfing for Good golf event

The St. Charles Kiwanis Foundation and Lazarus House are partnering on the sixth annual Golfing for Good event scheduled for June 3 at Mill Creek Golf Club in Geneva.

Remove hazards to prevent falls Dear Dr. K: I have osteoporosis, so my bones are going to break more easily. My doctor told me I therefore should try to avoid falls, but he didn’t say how. Any ideas?

Dear Reader: A tumble can send a person with osteoporosis down the road to disability. Many factors can increase your risk for falls. Some have to do with your physical condition; others come from the environment. There is much you can do to reduce both types of risks.

I’ve put some questions for you to ask yourself on my website, www.askdoctork. com. They can help you get a general sense of your risk of falling.

If your risk is high, consider strength and balance training. Focus on exercises that use the muscle groups required for the things you do in real life – getting out of a chair, climbing stairs or reaching a high shelf, for example.

Activities such as yoga and tai chi improve balance and coordination as well as core strength. There is some evidence they may help to prevent falls. Many of the movements done in these activities – lunging, stepping, turning and reaching – are similar to the movements we need to remain independent.

You also can take steps to decrease the impact of health-related issues on your risk of falls: • Pain. Chronic pain can hamper your mobility, throw you off balance or make it difficult to maintain your balance. Talk to your doctor about pain medications that won’t increase your risk of falls.

• Poor vision. It’s easy to trip or lose your balance when you can’t make out the edge of a stair or recognize an object in your path. Have an annual vision exam, and discuss your concerns about falling with your eye doctor.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Foot problems. Your feet are central in preserving your balance. See a foot specialist if you have foot pain. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes. Avoid high heels. And if you have neuropathy, use a walking stick.

• Medication side effects. Many drugs increase the risk of falling. Review all of your medications with your doctor. If any of them tend to impair your attention or balance, there may be alternative treatments that are less likely to do so.

Finally, most falls occur in the home.

The following measures can minimize your risk: • Improve lighting. Make sure all areas of your home are well illuminated. Use nightlights to mark hallways and the bathroom.

• Provide handholds. Install grab bars in the bathroom, by the bath and shower.

They can help you keep from falling when you are standing on a slippery surface.

• Remove obstacles and hazards. Clear away clutter from the floors. Keep cords and cables near the walls where you can’t trip on them. Secure area rugs and use grip mats for traction in the bathtub.

The average home is full of hazards.

And as we age, we often develop physical problems. You can work on both fronts.

You can improve your physical limitations, and you can remove and replace many of the hazards.

Dr. Wallace: I’m mad as heck and writing to you to let off some steam. Last week, I was ticketed by our friendly police for driving without my seatbelt fastened.

Big deal. First of all, I’m not convinced seatbelts worn properly actually save lives or lessen injuries during a collision.

I have a friend whose father burned to death while riding in a car that overturned and caught on fire. He couldn’t unbuckle his seatbelt and died because he was belted into an inferno.

If I choose to drive unbuckled, why must the government tell me I must do otherwise? If I happened to die because I wasn’t buckled in, I’d have no one to blame but myself. You always read how many lives are saved by wearing seatbelts, but I never read how many people would be alive if they hadn’t been belted in. Do you know? – Ashton,

statistic, but what you describe, while it has a grip on your imagination, is a relative rarity.

However, an enormous number of people have had their lives saved, or the extent of their injuries reduced, because they were belted in.

Dr. Wallace: I didn’t believe in wearing a seatbelt when riding in a car. I was too lazy to buckle up, and I wasn’t sure seatbelts saved lives. The only reason I started wearing one regularly was because I received two tickets for not doing so, and faced a $300 fine for my next offense.

Thank goodness I got those tickets. They actually saved my life.

Two years ago, I was involved in a very serious accident. My car was demolished and started to burn. I was wearing my seatbelt, and I’m told by the highway patrol I probably would have been killed if I hadn’t been belted.

Without my seatbelt, I would have been thrown from the car or knocked unconscious.

In either case, my death was a distinct possibility. If I had been unconscious inside a burning vehicle, I would have been unable to save myself.

What happened was after the automobile stopped spinning, it started burning. Fortunately, I was conscious, unhooked my seatbelt and walked away from the burning automobile. My total injuries were a bruised knee and

two cracked ribs.

Believe me, wearing seatbelts can save lives. I’m living proof. –

tremely well made and worth seeing. The best are great and well worth the price of admission; they have much to teach us about the human condition, and also are highly entertaining.

Such films are the exception, but I do think filmmakers have improved their product in the last few years. They can, and sometimes do, develop a plot without a torrent of filthy language, grotesque violence and unabashed lust.

As a teacher, I’d give the film industry a grade of C-minus. That’s up from a D-minus a few years ago.

When they move up to a B, I’ll start going more frequently.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY How do I talk to my husband Jeanne about putting Phillips his dog “Sunny” to sleep? My husband is the most loving, caring, generous person I have ever met, and I don’t know how to tell him it’s time to let his best friend go.

Sunny is 15½ years old and barely can walk because of bad hips. The poor thing can see only shadows and is almost completely deaf. He has been like this for the past two years and is deteriorating steadily.

I’m trying to be understanding and supportive. I bought reusable diapers when Sunny no longer could control his bowels and bladder. I carry him outside multiple times a day and hold him up so he can urinate without the diaper. I wash him regularly after he soils himself. It is very sad.

It is difficult to bring this up with my husband because he knows I’m frustrated with constantly cleaning up and washing bedding after there has been an accident. I don’t want him to think I want him to put the dog to sleep just because it is difficult. It’s just time.

Sunny’s quality of life is zero. The only thing he can do is eat and sleep. Am I wrong? What should I say to my husband to put the poor animal out of his misery? – It’s Time, In Reno Dear It’s Time: Your husband is doing his best friend no favor by letting him linger this way.

What’s going on now isn’t fair to Sunny or to you.

Suggest he contact Sunny’s veterinarian and talk to him/her about his beloved dog’s condition, because I’m pretty sure the vet will agree with me. Then be prepared, because your husband may be so bonded with Sunny he will need grief counseling after his dog is no more.

Retailers look forward to clearing out their shelves after the winter holidays and bringing out fresh collections just as daffodils start to bloom. Overscale hurricane lamps, chunky straw place mats, wooden cake stands and Easter egg-pastel curtains are part of the new look.

We checked out what’s starring in some of the home catalogues that are starting to hit mailboxes and inboxes.

Here are some trends that caught my eye. • Velvet: Yes, retailers are crushing on velvet for spring. The boho fashion staple is showing up in living rooms and bedrooms. As Anne and Kevin Boyce’s children grew, the Falls Church, Va., couple recognized that their beloved home seemed to shrink and their hilly, nearly nonexistent yard didn’t offer space for outdoor play.

Like many local buyers, they wanted to stay in their neighborhood, where they have friends and participate in community activities throughout the year, but they couldn’t find a home to match their wish list.

“We were so lucky because a woman who owned a home on a nice half-acre lot around the corner from us wanted to move to Leesburg (Va.) to be closer to her grandchildren,” Anne Boyce said. “We bought the house as a teardown and then were initially overwhelmed at the idea of designing a custom home.”

Building such a home requires a vision and patience as well as an experienced team of professionals who can provide buyers with advice throughout the process, which can take more than a year, depending on the condition of the lot and the architecture of the home. The design and permitting phase generally takes six months, and building can take 10 months to a year; the Boyces’ home took about 16 months to design and build.

Although custom homes often are among the more expensive dwellings, they can be built to meet the budget needs of people seeking to spend a lot less than $1 million. Some smaller, simpler homes can be built to a buyer’s specification for as little as $400,000, depending on the cost of the lot and materials chosen.

“You can do a $5,000 Ikea kitchen in a custom home or spend $60,000 on just the cabinets,” said George Myers, who is president of GTM Architects in Bethesda, Md., and who built the Boyces’ home. “It’s important to be upfront about this from the start and show buyers a high, middle and low option so they decide where they want to spend their money.”

Myers said a 4,000-square-foot custom home, with a 1,500-square-foot finished basement, in the Washington, D.C., area is typically priced in the $800,000 to $1.2 million range.

“We draw up plans based on a wish list and come up with a price,” Myers said. “If it needs to be 15 percent less, then we start to look at which materials to swap out to reduce the cost.”

“Most buyers want a particular style such as French country or contemporary or shingle-style for the outside and then about half of them work with an interior designer to pick the materials for the inside of the house,” Myers said. “Sometimes a builder will have a showroom, or you can look at other homes they’ve built to help make decisions. We show people photos of the most recent homes we’ve built and drive by them so they can see the different materials available and how they look.”

Myers said the budget always has to be part of the process.

“One of the things that is so great about custom homes is that you can decide whether you want $100,000 worth of appliances or $20,000 worth,” Lerner said. “You can decide how much to spend on the level of finish inside and outside and whether you want to spend a lot or a little on your outdoor space.”

All homes today are built with higher levels of energy efficiency because of new building techniques and materials. But if you want to go a step further, you may want to meet with a builder who can design and construct a “net zero” home that will produce more energy than it uses.
