KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – As Laura Herra walked from room to room in the new J&R Herra Inc. location at 210 E. North St., she noted a few ways that family members already had been associated with the structure.

Last month, the Herras moved their business into the facility that previously had been the home of the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District. J&R Herra offers plumbing, electric, geothermal and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning services to homes in the area.

Run by Brian and Laura Herra, the family business had done work at the building when it was a fire station.

Giving a tour of the facility, Laura Herra pointed out a few spots where the company had performed installations or improvements. Also, they noted, Brian Herra and many of his relatives had served with the fire department.

“It was kind of a full-circle moment,” Laura Herra said.

“There have been a lot of Herra moments here.”

Only a few months ago, fire engines were roaring in and out of the bays. But the fire department had outgrown the location and moved to its new home on Route 38. Now, there are materials stored where the fire trucks once had been, and there are all kinds of possibilities for the future as Laura Herra showed off room after room, as well as the parking lot. Last week, the shop was buzzing with activity, as the Herras said the cold winter months provide one of the busy seasons.

The Herras say the building is a perfect fit for them.

“This building that was so well-loved by the Elburn community, that’s not going to stop,” Laura Herra said, adding that the Herras are civic-minded and want to embrace any opportunities the location would present.

On Tuesday, Anderson called the end result a “winwin-win” situation – for the fire district, the Herras, the village and local businesses near the area.

“It’s good for the fire district in that they sold both of the buildings that they own there,” Anderson said, alluding to the main building

Brian Herra said it was a good fit, and he acknowledged the family’s history in the building.

As he went over family members who served with the fire department, he listed his uncle Jack and his father, Rich – the J and the R of J&R Herra.

There were more uncles, brothers, a brother-in-law and a cousin.

Part of it, Brian Herra said, is that there were many family members in the area.

“You would look in the phone book and see the list of Herras,” he said, spreading his fingers apart to show what would be long columns.

Laura Herra said she had come across a photo of her husband’s grandmother from the Elburn Days parade from years ago.

“You would look in the phone book and see the list of Herras.”

She was on a fire truck along with her sons and grandsons who had volunteered with the department.

There were many on the truck.

“I would really like to frame that,” she said.

Brian and Laura Herra said there was much work to be done at the building to bring it to where they want it to be, but they said it is an ideal situation.

They are young – Brian Herra is 36, and his wife is 34 – and they are happy in the town and with the building.

“We want to be here for the next 40 years,” Brian Herra said.

McNally’s earns initial support for liquor license

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A “crown jewel” of downtown St. Charles is one step closer to reopening.

In committee, St. Charles aldermen on Tuesday supported a liquor license request from McNally’s Irish Pub for 109 W. Main St. – a site it once occupied but was most recently home to Valley Lodge Tavern.

Valley Lodge Tavern closed last month. It had opened April 14.

In addition to the Class B liquor license, McNally’s is

requesting a 1 a.m. late-night permit, Police Chief James Keegan told the Government Operations Committee.

Referencing McNally’s history in St. Charles, Keegan described it as a well-established, well-run business. It had been in the city for more than 16 years before it closed last April.

“It’s really the crown jewel of our downtown,” he said.

According to a business plan submitted to the city, McNally’s will be designed and operated under the guidelines of the Irish pub concept, a program developed

by Guinness Brewing world-

wide.

“McNally’s will be unlike anything yet seen in the western suburbs of Chicago,” the plan states. “Patrons that walk into it will genuinely feel as if they have entered one of the many great pubs of Ireland.”

Signs in the building’s windows advertise a February return.

A representative from McNally’s was present, but aldermen didn’t have any questions for him.

The committee voted, 8-1, in support of granting the liquor license. Fourth Ward Alderman Jo Krieger voted no.

North Aurora teen faces felony weapons charges in Aurora incident KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – A 17-year-old North Aurora boy is facing felony charges in an incident that took place last week in Aurora, according to a news release issued by the Aurora Police Department.

The release indicated that the teenager, whose name is not being released because of his age, was charged as a

juvenile with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, not having a FOID card, and illegal possession of cannabis at around 7 p.m.

Friday.

He was taken into custody without incident after the car in which he was riding was stopped for a traffic violation

by Aurora Police Special Operations Group investigators in the area of Lake Street and Sullivan Road, the release

states.

When they approached the vehicle after stopping it, the officers allegedly saw cannabis remnants on the 17-yearold’s clothing.

When asked, the teen proceeded to show officers he was in possession of additional marijuana, according to the release.

Investigators then searched the vehicle for further contraband and, with the

help of an Aurora Police K-9 unit, located a loaded pistol in the trunk they were able to tie back to the juvenile.

The handgun, which was reported stolen out of Texas, allegedly was wrapped in a sock and hidden inside of a child restraint seat, the release stated.

The 17-year-old was transferred to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center in St. Charles.

More than six grams of cannabis allegedly was found in his possession, police stated in the release.

The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old Aurora man, was charged with improper lane use. Three female passengers – a 17-year-old from Wheaton, and two 16-year-olds, one from North Aurora and the other from Aurora, were released to their parents without charges.

The Kane County Health Department is advising area residents that Heritage International Inc. of Compton, California, is voluntarily recalling one lot of Trader Joe’s raw cashew pieces with the following lot code – “BEST BEFORE 07.17.2016TF4” – because of potential contamination with salmonella. While there have been no illnesses immediately reported, the product was distributed throughout the country, including to Trader Joe’s stores in Illinois, states a news release from the health department.

The recall only affects one specific lot of Trader Joe’s raw cashew pieces. The product comes in a 16-ounce, clear, nonresealable plastic package, with a barcode number of 00505154.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Customers who have purchased cashews with the specified lot code are urged not to eat the product and to dispose of it or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. Customers

Scardamaglia, who runs Windy City Muscle Cars in Elburn, now is looking to find the car a home and also pay tribute to both of his parents. His “clone” of a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am convertible is up for auction at eBay. The auction can be found online at windycitymusclecars. com.

He said he will donate a portion of the sale price to charity – possibly to both the Stand Up To Cancer organization and the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He said his mother, who suffered with MS, died in 2011. And he said his dad died in 2015, from cancer. Both were younger than 60 years old when

“The previous owner restored it to the specifications, and he did a great job,” Scar-

damaglia said. “He didn’t spare any expense.”

He said this is a good time to sell the car, because two of the original 1969 Trans Am convertible cars are up for sale at Mecum’s auction this week in Kissimmee, Florida.

Scardamaglia said the original 1969 Trans Am convertible cars could bring in more than $1 million each, and he said one of them could bring in as much as $3 million.

For the car he has listed on eBay, Scardamaglia has a “buyit-now” price of $99,988. He said if someone meets the reserve, he would donate 10 percent to the cancer charity. If someone buys it for the “buy-it-now” price on eBay, he would donate an additional 10 percent to the National MS Society.

As of Tuesday morning, the current bid was at $27,427. The auction is open until 8 p.m. Sunday.

Betty L. Burkitt, 84, passed away peacefully in her home in the care of CNS Hospice and close family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell (Pete) C. Burkitt; parents, Verda Sam and Mary Jane (Carner) King; brother and sister-in-law, Robert(RV) and Etta King; sister and brother-inlaw, Jean (King) and Ray Colwell, son-in-law Terry Paskadi.

She is survived by four children, Denise (Jeff) Bain, Lois Paskadi, Scott (Kelly) Burkitt, Joy Pascoe; 13 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and two greatgreat-grandsons.

She retired from Furnas Electric.

Per Betty’s request there was no funeral or visitation held. A private graveside service will be held at River Hills Memorial Park at noon on Jan. 21.

Even after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s approximately 10 years ago, and getting a return visit of breast cancer in March 2015, Janie continued to bring joy to many. Her deep zeal for life,

Janie was the wife of George “Bill” Smals for 21 years before he moved to heaven in December 2010. Prior to that Janie was married to Lee Clausen for 30 years.

Janie was the fun-loving, nature adoring, tennis-playing, Jesus-loving mother of Steve (Sharon), Kim (Jeff), Candace (Bill) and Scott (Carolyn). Illinois health department issues alert on Zika virus KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com The Illinois Department of Public Health on Tuesday issued a news release alerting the public of the potential of contracting the Zika virus while traveling abroad.

The Zika virus is spread to people through mosquito bites, similar to West Nile virus or dengue fever, according to the release. While illness is usually mild and severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon, there is a possible link between Zika virus infection in pregnant women and subsequent birth defects, the release states.

According to the department, two pregnant Illinois residents who recently traveled to countries where Zika virus is found have tested positive for the virus. Physicians are monitoring their health and pregnancies.

“There is virtually no risk

to Illinois residents, since you cannot contract Zika virus from another person, but only through the bite of an infected mosquito,” IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah stated in the release. “But since this is a time of year when people travel to warmer climates and countries where Zika virus is found, we are urging residents, especially pregnant women, to take preventive measures when traveling in affected countries and check health travel advisories.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel alert (Level 2-practice enhanced precautions) for people traveling to regions and certain countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing, including Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Venezuela and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

‘We must change the system’ THE WASHINGTON POST “If we want a better politics, it’s not enough just to change a congressman or change a senator or even change a president,” President Obama said in last week’s State of the Union address. Instead of electing a few well-meaning people, the president insisted, “we have to change the system to reflect our better selves,” altering “not just who gets elected, but how they get elected.”

Obama speaks from experience: He promised to be a political change agent in the Oval Office, and, seven years later, the country’s politics are more fractured than when he started.

The truth is, as the president also acknowledged that Tuesday, “our brand of democracy is hard,” with a certain amount of gridlock built into its system of checks and balances. No magic solution can bridge ideological and cultural rifts. But there are reforms that could help.

One would be ending “the practice of drawing our congressional districts so that politicians can pick their voters and not the other way around,” as Obama said. Gerrymandering, in which state lawmakers draw legislative district boundaries to maximize partisan or incumbent advantage, warps Americans’ representation in Washington and in statehouses across the country. Among the most egregious examples are the embarrassingly partisan congressional district maps Democrats drew in Maryland and Republicans drafted in North Carolina.

The strategy involves packing people who tend to vote for the opposite party into a few districts and spreading out the rest of the opposition among the others. The use of this technique contributes to results such as these: In 2012, a year in which Obama carried Pennsylvania by five points, 13 of the state’s 18 congressional districts went to Republicans. In a given election, a majority of Americans might vote for Democrats for Congress, but Republicans still could hold the majority of seats. Needless to say, this tends to make Congress less responsive to the will of the majority.

Obama offered one idea to even things out: Let a bipartisan or nonpartisan committee draw the maps. Voters in Arizona and in California took map-drawing responsibilities out of partisan lawmakers’ hands, resulting in maps that preserved majority-minority districts required under the Voting Rights Act and also created a few more competitive seats. The Supreme Court ruled last term this is constitutionally acceptable.

Redistricting commissions can’t eliminate distortions that result from population patterns. Democrats tend to cluster tightly in cities, making it more likely that their votes will be packed into a few urban districts. But the distortions do not have to be as big as they are now.

Even if redistricting reform had only a modest effect on election results, reform would increase the legitimacy of the system. Unfortunately, the same partisan politicians who benefit from existing rules cannot be counted on to impose such reform on themselves. Voters, state by state, may have to demand it, either by electing legislators who support redistricting commissions or by approving ballot measures that give lawmakers no choice.

Vikings top North Stars for second time in past week

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles North girls basketball coach Sean Masoncup hollered an early yet telling statistic to his players Tuesday night.

Geneva corralled offensive rebounds on its first two possessions. Where were the box-outs? It was time the North Stars found their urgency and got on the glass.

The sequence transpired early in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game, before Geneva pulled away for a 55-43 victory. At any rate, offensive boards marked the time as the Vikings distanced themselves to beat the North Stars for the second time in one week.

“Very important in this game,” Geneva junior Grace Loberg said. “If you can keep the ball on your side, wait and get time off the clock and get an easy putback, that’s just all-around helpful to you.”

Geneva led, 23-11, at halftime as the two teams combined to shoot 27 percent in the first 16 minutes.

The North Stars’ Kyla Helsel banked in a 3 at the firstquarter buzzer to make it 11-7 Geneva. North (12-6, 4-3 UEC River) needed 11:59 of clock time to score its next seven points.

“We just don’t execute,” Masoncup said. “When we execute, we’re good. So we’ll get back at it. I mean, they’re a factory. They’re an absolute factory.”

Masoncup spoke from Geneva’s Mack Olson gym, adjacent to the visiting locker room, and lauded the Vikings’ program tradition. Geneva, however, struck from the more cavernous contest gym down the hall while improving to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Recalling the memory of watching four Sami Sample 3’s in the Vikings’ 57-40 win in St. Charles last week, players made a handful of adjustments, starting with creating extra space on the perimeter.

“Focusing on our rotation, jumping to the ball, always being in the spots you needed to be by working hard,” said sophomore guard Margaret Whitley, who scored a gamehigh 19 points. “On Saturday morning, we worked really hard on that. Everyone did.

And it helped a lot, I think.”

Loberg was a constant under the boards throughout and made her biggest scoring contributions after the break en route to nine points and 10 rebounds.

North’s leading scorer, Grace Quinn (10 points), was held in check from 3-point range, along with the rest of her teammates.

Whitley drilled three treys in the game, saving her most impactful for last.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, she took a long pass from the baseline after a Geneva offensive rebound and hit a 3 from near the top of the key for a 31-12 lead.

Another putback paid dividends near the end of the quarter, with the North Stars playing their best basketball behind full-court pressure.

Vikings sophomore guard Maddie Yelle scored two of her nine points on an offensive rebound to push the Geneva lead back to 18.

“That’s what good teams do,” Masoncup said, “and Geneva did it.”

The Vikings’ largest lead was 24 points. Admittedly concerned about how her team might respond to playing a skilled conference challenger again in such proximity, Geneva coach Sarah Meadows beamed about the way the team passed the test.

She finds the Vikings are “playing smarter and making better decisions” each week.

Typically, more time passes between conference rematches than seven days, but the Vikings channeled plenty of resolve to roll past the North Stars again.

“That was the main thing,” Whitley said. “We adapted to whatever defense they were changing. So I think we did really well with that tonight.”

There were a lot of mental mistakes tonight, as well. Give Kaneland credit. They played hard, they were physical with us, and they are a good basketball team.”

Adding to the offensive

outburst the Knights brought Tuesday night, the defense was just as impressive. Kaneland (9-5) forced 19 turnovers and limited the North Stars to just nine made field goals during the game.

In his first year as Kaneland coach, Joe Conroy has seen the best and worst of his team throughout the first half of the season. Between getting David back on track and the defensive effort he saw in this one, he was very pleased.

“I was really happy with the way we came out,” Conroy said. “Ryan David has been struggling a bit, and for him to come out that way, I was thrilled. That’s the confidence that we know he’s capable of playing with and combined with his defensive effort that he’s had lately, it was great.

“I think we challenged them to take really tough shots tonight. In turn, (North) had to work really hard to get those shots, so it tires you out when you’re on the other end of the floor. We made a couple of small adjustments, playing a bit different than we usually do and it paid off.”

Despite trailing by 10 at halftime, North (3-10) climbed as close as four points in the third quarter after back-toback 3-pointers by Armon Osborne and Mikey Schroeder.

But those baskets, midway through the quarter, were the last points the North Stars scored until Schroeder was fouled on a half-court shot as time expired in the third.

During that drought, Kaneland went on a 9-0 run to spread the gap back to 10 heading to the fourth. Kaneland, then, scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to stretch the lead some more,

and North never got the deficit under double digits after that point.

“We were able to have high intensity the whole game,” David said. “We took charges, had each other’s backs, and got some steals. ... We had great stretches where we didn’t let them score and get a couple of quick baskets. Our defense and that fast start set the tone tonight.”

Senior forward Mitchell Groen added nine points off the bench for the Knights, who also capitalized from the free throw line, making 25 of 29 attempts.

ST. CHARLES – Ryan David had been struggling of late.

The Kaneland boys basketball senior was looking for some consistency and may have found it stepping on the court at St. Charles North Tuesday night.

David scored the game’s first 11 points, aiding a 14-0 run by the Knights to start the game, and Kaneland never looked back, picking up a 5742 nonconference win over the North Stars.

David finished with a teamhigh 13 points and gave most of the credit to his teammates.

“Once you see that first one go in, it’s a good feeling,” David said. “My teammates did a good job of getting me the ball in good places to score. It made it a lot easier for me to make some shots.”

The run forced a timeout from North coach Tom Poulin, and while the North Stars were able to claw back into the game at times, they never fully recovered from the slow start.

Kaneland defeated Yorkville for the Ottawa Christmas Classic title last month, a precursor to the teams’ first of two Northern Illinois Big 12 East meetings.

“They were going to be out for us anyway in conference,” Knights guard Morgan Weber said of the Foxes, “but now they even have more (motivation).” Yorkville edged the visiting Knights, 48-47, on Friday. The rematch is Feb. 5 in Maple Park, the day before Kaneland hosts its inaugural shootout.

St. Charles East coach Lori Drumtra hasn’t found herself using that refrain about the team’s shooting patience as often lately.

“Sometimes we’re in such a rush that we fire up the first thing we see,” Drumtra said. “I think we can be a very good team when we run our offense through and get good, quality shots. Especially when teams press us, we feel like once we break it sometimes, that we have to rise things. We have been doing a much better job of late.”

Benefiting from increased athleticism and its deepest roster yet under fifth-year coach Kevin Jensen, Batavia pressed East en route to

Friday’s 12-point road win.

The Saints still uncorked a balanced attack against the Bulldogs, but that athleticism and Hannah Frazier’s 29 points ultimately added up.

“On most nights, we have had two, sometimes three girls in double figures scoring,” Drumtra said. “That’s usually a recipe for wins on most nights. We’ve let a couple of opposing girls have big nights, and when that happens, it can be tough to overcome that.”

Frazier, a St. Louis recruit, has not been the only player striking in the scoring column for the Bulldogs. That has been Jensen’s hope, considering matchups and a high ratio of opposing defenses bent on singling Frazier out.

“When you have a player like Hannah that draws the

attention she does, when we have girls making shots, we’re dangerous,” Jensen said. “Whether it’s a random 3 from Jess (Koch) or Hailey (Orman), both of which have made some very important and timely shots for us this year, that’s just one more player that you need to account for.”

Sophomore sensation: St. Charles North phenom Lucas Segobiano tore his labrum during football season but is expected to be fully healthy by the start of the lacrosse season this spring.

“He’s looking pretty good,” North Stars coach Sean McCaffrey said. “He played all over the place in the summer and fall last year and he’s being recruited by Maryland.”

McCaffrey is super excited about what lies ahead, especially with Segobiano and a class of 21 other sophomores

returning from last season.

“A lot of the guys have been playing in the offseason, which is good,” McCaffrey said. “I think we’ll have a much faster team than last year and we’re hoping for a high-powered offense. Our schedule is harder, too.”

The North Stars will travel to Kansas City, Missouri, over spring break for the second straight season and play three games against top competition.

“You can usually expect it to be at least 20 degrees warmer than Chicago and last year it was 50 degrees and the sun was shining,” he said. “Plus, we go for team building. The lacrosse season goes by so quick, so you’ve got to get that going quicker than the other sports.”

The Geneva boys lacrosse program has been on the rise.

The Vikings made a deep run in the B-Class playoffs last season, losing to Warren in the semifinals.

It simply was Warren’s year to win the Lacrosse Cup, as the Blue Devils defeated Maine South to do so and finished 20-2.

Perhaps 2016 is Geneva’s year to win it.

“We’re returning all but eight players on varsity,” Vikings coach Derek Bahler said. “So we’re pretty optimistic that we can make a push like we did last year.

Two of those seniors, Max Lemen and Joel Hardy, are returning captains.

“We’ve been working hard and I’ve done a lot with River City Lacrosse, so we’re seeing the program being built through the park district before the kids get into high school,” Bahler said. “A good number of seniors on this year’s team have played on River City select teams when they were in seventh and eighth grade.”

He expects some of those seniors to play at the collegiate level, too.

“There are over 300 (NCAA) Division III schools, and they’ve been popping up all around the Midwest,” Bahler said. “So there are some good opportunities

I think the beginning of the season was about adjustments. Now that we’ve reached the middle of the season, we’ve gotten used to how the team plays, and I’ve kind of found my own style. Having a new position this year, it’s taken

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Ston named St. Francis coach: At Wheaton, after 40

years of Peg Kopec on the bench as St. Francis girls volleyball coach, it was time to find a replacement.

Lisa Ston, a 16-year coach in the St. Francis volleyball program, was named her successor Tuesday.

Ston has been well-traveled in the Spartans’ volleyball scene. She has been Kopec’s assistant coach for the past 13 years, and also served as sophomore boys volleyball coach and head coach of the freshman girls team.

“It’s hard to put into words the excitement to take over a program with the tradition and success that St. Francis has,” Ston said. “I had the privilege of working under an amazing coach for a number of years and it’s a big honor to be named head coach.”

Ston played high school volleyball at Incarnate Word Academy, as well as at the club level with the St. Charles Volleyball Club, both in the St. Louis area. She also started on the Dominican University team for all four years, earning Freshman Confer-

ence Player of the Year, and both team captain and team MVP honors in her final two collegiate seasons.

Ston is well-aware of the legacy that Kopec has left behind within the program.

Kopec, who was named the 2015 USA Today Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year, was the winningest coach in IHSA history with a 1,238-229-2 record.

St. Francis has won four straight state titles – 12 total overall in the program – including the first at the Class 4A level this past season. Kopec retired moments after the Spartans defeated Glenbard West for their latest state crown.

“I have been lucky enough to work side by side with Peg and feel like I have a bit of a leg up because know a lot of tradition that comes with this program,” Ston said. “It’s a bit more than just playing the game. Peg was amazing at team building and building memories. I’d hope to continue that tradition.”

If you’re in pain, all this activity may seem impossible. But in many cases, exercise can actually help you feel better.

If you have osteoarthritis, for example, regular exercise not only helps maintain joint function, but also relieves stiffness and decreases pain and fatigue.

Healthy adults should aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, five days a week. But even if you can’t do the recommended amount, be as physically active as your abilities and conditions allow.

What’s “moderate” exercise? Experts define it scientifically as the amount of physical activity needed to cause your body to use a certain amount of oxygen, measured at a “metabolic equivalent,” or MET. Moderate exercise is in the range of 3 to 6 METs. Briskly walking at between 3 to 5 miles per hour (like walking 2 miles in 30 minutes) qualifies. So does leisurely bicycling, swimming, playing golf (if you walk the course), cleaning your home and mowing your lawn.

You don’t have to exercise vigorously (defined as more than 6 METs) to achieve major health benefits. So you don’t need to go jogging or perform calisthenics, for example.

However, vigorous exercise is healthy for most people.

Here’s the bottom line: There is no pill as good for your health as regular moderate exercise.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 36-year-old woman. I didn’t drink, until I went to my first unchaperoned teen party where booze was available. I’d like to share my experience with today’s teenagers.

When my girlfriend and I arrived at the party, we were both really surprised at the amount of booze available.

There was wine, beer and whiskey, and it was all free!

And everybody was encouraged to “join in the fun,” so I started out sipping a beer.

Then somebody wanted me to taste something with a little more “kick” to it. That led to drinking a whiskey and cola.

I vaguely remember telling myself to slow down, but I was starting to feel a buzz and I wanted to enjoy it to the fullest.

About a half an hour later, I was feeling really nauseous and I barely made it to the bathroom before I threw up. I thought I was going to die and even felt like that might be better than being so sick! I must have passed out then because I came to on the bathroom floor and my friend was there calling my name to wake me.

Lucky for me, she missed me and came looking for me.

Somehow, she got me into her car and drove me to her house. She called my mom and told her that I wasn’t feeling well and had fallen asleep on her couch and her mother had

They would probably have put me on restriction for a month and made me promise that I would never do anything so stupid again. (And believe me, I never did!)

But as they would say, “Experience is the best teacher!” I promised myself that my first experience with alcohol would also be my last. I knew alcohol was a very potent liquid, but I was not aware how dangerously powerful it really is. I wanted to find out for myself what booze was all about. Now I know!

So now it’s been 20 years since I had my “alcohol experience” and I have never had a drop of alcohol since. – Liz,

How can I continue to stay as active as possible?

Dear Reader: Most of us take for granted the stamina, strength, balance, coordination and range of motion needed to perform even simple acts such as getting out of bed, heading down the stairs and walking around the block.

But when we lose these basic skills, we begin to understand how much of living well relies on being able to move.

At first, you can compensate for an impairment caused by health problems or just aging. You learn to move slower and more deliberately, for example.

But don’t try to move less, just more slowly. If you move less, you may gain weight, stop exercising and withdraw from social relationships. The resulting physical, emotional and mental decline further restricts your mobility.

You can take steps to prevent future mobility impairments and reduce existing ones. The single most important thing you can do is to engage regularly in physical activity.

Regular activity can help you control your weight. It’s the key to keeping your muscles and bones strong, your joints working properly, your heart healthy and your metabolism balanced. The more you move, the better your balance will be. And that’s on top of all the other health benefits of regular exercise. Those include a greatly reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, depression and dementia.

Get some of your activity from exercise. Start with aerobic exercise, like walking, bicycling or water aerobics. Add in some strength training, flexibility and balance exercises.

Also, strive to increase your routine daily physical activities. For example, make it a point to go up and down the stairs more often. Park further

Strangely, mine was that I did not realize dogs are more expensive pets than cats. But this column concerns opener’s bidding of a 6-4 hand, six in a major and four in a minor. In today’s deal, look at the South hand. You open one spade, and partner responds two clubs. Would you rebid two diamonds or two spades?

Some players advise rebidding in the six-card major with a minimum opening, but mentioning the fourcard minor with extra values. This is debatable.

Recently, I have seen two deals where the major-suit rebid resulted in an excellent club fit being missed.

Agreed, if you do not have an eightcard fit anywhere and partner is weak, rebidding in the six-card suit will be best, but why be so pessimistic?

In this deal, South should have rebid two diamonds. Then surely North-South would have reached six diamonds, in which South would have taken one spade, three hearts, two diamonds, four clubs and a ruff in each hand.

At the table, South rebid three spades, a bad overbid with the club void. North used Roman Key Card Blackwood, then signed off in five spades when two key cards (two aces, or one ace and the spade king) were missing. West led the diamond five, after which South had to lose one diamond and two spades.
