Charleston on the River headed to St. Charles

Taib, who also operates the Spotted Fox Ale House on the city’s east side, wants to bring a lasting eatery to a site that has suffered from turnover in recent years – the riverfront suite in Fox Island Square, 1 W. Illinois St. “We plan to be here for a long time,� he said, describing the location as prime real estate.

With Charleston on the River, Taib said he aims to provide fresh comfort food at a reasonable price in a casual dining setting that will feature live entertainment on certain nights.

A new restaurant, Charleston on the River, is planned for a suite in Fox Island Square, at 1 W. Illinois St., St. Charles. The space, which was most recently home to Top Table, features a patio overlooking the Fox River. more successful than previous tenants, he said, adding that past fine-dining concepts struggled because they appealed to a smaller customer base.

On a recent afternoon, Taib walked through the space –

which was last home to Top Table and, before that, Bistro One West – and shared his vision for Charleston on the River.

Naming the restaurant after the city’s first moniker was intentional, he said, noting he

wants the establishment to be about the town. “It’s not about the chef here,� Taib said. “This is owned by the town.�

Taib, who secured a liquor license from the city in December, said he aims to open the restaurant by the March 12 St. Patrick’s Parade. That gives him several weeks to give the space a makeover with new colors, new furniture and a revised layout, he said.

The interior will complement the outdoor patio that overlooks the Fox River, he said. He said he has plans to remodel the patio with two fire pits and an outdoor bar.

Noting the revitalization on nearby First Street, Taib said the timing for his expansion into downtown was perfect. “We want to be a part of it,� he said.

Fire causes $100K in damage to home near Maple Park

Heavy smoke can be seen near a house fire, at the intersection of Beith and Freeland roads near Maple Park.

asloboda@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – A fire caused $100,000 in damage Monday afternoon to a home at 45W825 Beith Road, Maple Park, according to a news release issued by the Maple Park Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, the release states. No one was at home when the fire began.

The residence is not inhabitable.

The blaze is under investigation, but the release indicated the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

First is a Speed Networking event, which is a quick, easy way to meet 20-plus members looking for connections and ways to help one another. Register today; the event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 27.

The Networking Extravaganza is another opportunity that is great for chamber members to exchange business cards and find common connections; this event is at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 11.

One of our largest and prestigious events, the Charlemagne award dinner, will be Feb. 5 at the Q Center in St. Charles.

At this event, we honor many community businesses and a community member for a lifetime achievement award; in addition to that, we also recognize major anniversaries. This is a great networking event for our members.

February will kick off the

chamber’s new Marketing Boot Camp Series, which will have six luncheons that all build on each other to help businesses gain a better understanding of many different aspects of marketing. By C.R. Walker If you have Medicare, you also qualify for Medicare prescription drug coverage.

There tends to be some confusion concerning Medicare, but it’s pretty simple with regard to prescription drugs, because there are just two ways for you to get coverage.

You can either add a Medicare prescription drug plan, better known as Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan, more commonly referred to as Part C, that offers Medicare prescription drug coverage.

Both plans subsidize the cost of prescription drugs and prescription drug insurance premiums for Medicare recipients.

Let’s consider the case of a senior who opts against joining a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D) when he or she first becomes eligible to do so, or they decide against joining a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) (like an HMO or PPO) or other Medicare health plan that offers prescription drug coverage. Because they’ve chosen against the coverage,

they will likely have to pay a late enrollment penalty unless they have other creditable prescription drug coverage or meet certain income and resource limits.

If you finally choose to go the Plan D route then you’re simply adding prescription drug coverage to your original Medicare or some other Medicare plan, such as cost, private-fee-for-service and medical savings account.

On the other hand, if you elect Plan C, which would be an HMO, PPO or other Medicare health plan that offers Medicare prescription drug coverage, you’ll receive all of your Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance) along with you prescription drug coverage. Keep in mind that you’re required to have Medicare Part A and Part B in order to successfully join a Medicare Advantage plan.

Once you’ve made these decisions, you can dial 1-800-MEDICARE or the particular plan, complete a handwritten enrollment form or use the Internet to enroll via the plan’s website.

COVER STORY ‘WE HAVE OVERPOPULATION’ Officials say adult cats can be difficult to place in new homes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com After her mother died of cancer and their house in St. Charles was foreclosed, Tracy McClinton said she had no choice but to bring nine cats and a dog to Kane County Animal Control in December.

McClinton, 43, said she kept adding cats when people asked her to care for their pets, and then never came back for them.

“Unfortunately, when people know you’re an animal lover, they pawn things on you,” McClinton said. “I could not say ‘no.’ Obviously, having that many is not a great situation for anybody.”

Now living with other family, McClinton has retrieved one cat – 13-year-old Lucky – back from animal control.

“I hope they all get a very good home,” McClinton said of those she gave up.

That might be easier said than done. Animal control had 15 cats available for adoption as of Monday afternoon, including seven of McClinton’s.

Among the cats are Walton, a shy black shorthair who will be there a year next month.

Buster, another black shorthair, and Powder, a white shorthair, have been there since June 2015. Other cats have been there since August and September 2015.

Shannon Mulvaney, the manager for shelter programs and operations at animal control, said adult cats are difficult to place, and rescues have not claimed them because their foster homes tend to be full.

As of Monday afternoon, Anderson Animal Shelter in St. Charles Township had 22 cats available for adoption, and HELP – Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets – listed 33 cats for adoption, according to their websites.

so many homeless cats,” Mulvaney said.

• • • Beth Drake, Anderson Animal Shelter executive director, said several factors come into play when it comes to finding new homes for adult cats.

“People treat their cats differently than dogs,” Drake said. “Cats are relegated to

the outdoors. Cats are not neutered as much, so we have overpopulation of cats.”

Because cats have not been domesticated as long as dogs, it does not take long for a cat to become feral when left outdoors, Drake said.

“You have feral cats, not feral dogs,” Drake said.

And while cats “make per-

fectly wonderful pets,” people do not adopt adult cats as they do adult dogs, puppies or kittens, Drake said. On average, it takes 10 days or less to adopt out an adult dog, three days for puppies and seven to 10 days for kittens, she said.

An adult cat, however, will take close to a month to be adopted, on average, Drake said.

“Some cats don’t show very well in a shelter,” Drake said.

“People walking in might see a terrified cat in back of a cage [that] they don’t want to adopt.

When there are 20 to 25 other cats trying to get attention – they are going to get adopted quickly. Every single shelter has cats like that.”

That could be the situation with Walton, a cat so shy he hid in a cat condo when a reporter and photographer came to visit Kane County Animal Control. All that was visible

in the inky darkness were his glowing green eyes – then Walton darted out like a black flash and ran underneath a stand of cages. No amount of cajoling could entice him to venture out.

“We have a free-range cat room, where people come in and see what cats approach them,” Mulvaney said.

“Hobbes and Powder usually are the first greeters. ... If they are a little shy, they hide, or people just don’t see them.”

Staff and volunteers regularly play with the cats, she said. As soon as Mulvaney sat on the floor, Hobbes, a ginger kitty climbed up on her lap and began purring.

Cruz, a 16-year-old gray cat that has been there since August 2015, came close for a head rub. Mulvaney obliged.

“She’s really sweet,” Mulvaney said.

Dr. David Allen Swanson passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016, from pulmonary complications of sarcoidosis.

Dr. Swanson was born Sept. 29, 1941, in Chicago and grew up in Geneva, IL. He earned degrees from Carleton College and the Univ. of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and later served in the U.S. Army Medical

Corps from ‘69-71. He is best known for an illustrious 39-year career in urologic oncology at the Univ. of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Beginning with a two-year fellowship in urologic oncology, Dr. Swanson advanced from Assistant Professor to Professor to Deputy Chairman (13 years) and, ultimately, Chairman (8.5 years) of the Dept. of Urology. He would be hard-pressed to choose which part of his job he loved more: surgery, teaching and mentoring, or counseling patients about treatment options. He also served on the Board of the Kidney Cancer Association for over 15 years.

Though he officially “retired” in August 2005, it came as no surprise that he couldn’t quit MDACC cold turkey.

He continued to support the department part-time, partnering to rebuild the prostate brachytherapy program.

His proudest career achievement was his Faculty Achievement Award in Patient Care, awarded by his peers in ‘95. He published over 200 scientific papers and book chapters and delivered more than 400 presentations, nationally and internationally. His career took him around the world, visiting 38 countries for both business and pleasure. He was an avid traveler, foodie and oenophile, and he relished introducing friends and family to

great restaurants and fine wines (particularly his cherished Rombauer Chardonnay).

An enthusiastic sports fan, he held season tickets for every Houston sports team, reveling in the wins and mourning the losses with his son, Erik.

In retirement he found poker, arguably his only hobby, spurring frequent father-son trips to Vegas to hit the tables and visit his favorite restaurants. A creature of habit, he lived for moments like these - good food, good wine, good friends and family - just as much as he lived for his patients, his colleagues, and his work in urologic oncology. Dr. Swanson, David, Dad, Doc - you made a difference in more lives than you’ll ever know, and your legacy lives on.

Dr. Swanson is survived by his wife, Carene; son, Erik and daughter-inlaw, Melanee; and his sister, Barbara Swanson Roos.

A celebration of his life and career will be held at MDACC in February.

Police: Geneva Township man jailed after firing gun in home editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA TOWNSHIP – A Geneva Township man was in custody as of Monday afternoon after he was accused of firing a handgun in his home after an argument with his sister, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with officers from the Geneva and St. Charles police departments, responded to Andrew Deliman’s home in the 0N600 block of Keegan Drive about 6:45 p.m. Sunday for a reported domestic dispute, the release states.

Deliman, 41, refused to leave the house, but deputies eventually were able to enter and take him into custody without inci-

dent, the release states.

According to the release, the initial investigation indicated he got into a verbal argument with his sister about a wrestling match he had with her 15-year-old son. At some point, he pushed her, and everyone but Deliman left the home as the dispute continued, the release states.

While alone in the house, Deliman reportedly got a handgun from a safe and fired a shot. There was no indication he aimed the gun at anyone, according to the release.

Deliman was evaluated at Delnor Hospital in Geneva before authorities brought him to the Kane County Adult Justice Center in St. Charles Township, the release states.

George W. Fitzmaurice was born February 3, 1921, in Chicago, IL and passed away peacefully at home in Geneva on January 15, with his beloved wife, Joan, at his side.

George graduated high school from Lane Tech in Chicago and joined the Army Air Force soon after. He served in World War II and the European Theater. George was honorably discharged November 21, 1945.

George married Helen Tulisalo in 1942, they were married for 58 years. Helen preceded George in death in 2000.

During his aviation career, George worked for United Airlines and later FAA for 22 years.

George married Joan Regelbrugge in 2001. George was known for his kind and compassionate heart. He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.

Our heart felt thanks to all that helped care for George during these last two years and made his journey as comfortable as possible.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 19th from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

An aging nation THE WASHINGTON POST “For my final address to this chamber, I don’t want to just talk about next year. I want to focus on the next five years, the next 10 years, and beyond. I want to focus on our future.”

With those words, President Obama announced that last Tuesday’s State of the Union speech would be different: not the usual list of legislative New Year’s resolutions but a long-range look at structural challenges facing a rapidly changing nation. He mentioned several, including climate change, political reform and income inequality. Conspicuously absent from the president’s message, though, was an issue so vital, and so unavoidable, that the president could have devoted the entire evening to it.

We refer to the aging of the American population and the attendant need to support tens of millions of retirees in the coming decades without neglecting other pressing social needs. The demographics are inexorable: In 2050, the over-65 population is projected to be 83.7 million, up from 43.1 million in 2012, according to a 2014 Census Bureau report. Seniors will account for 1 of every 5 Americans in 2050, up from roughly 1 in 7 in 2012. The implication is clear: A larger, older cohort will depend on a smaller, working-age cohort. Payroll taxes fund Social Security and Medicare; yet the Congressional Budget Office forecast last year that the ratio of workers to retirees will decline from 3-to-1 to 2-to-1 between now and 2040.

Thanks, in part, to immigration, the U.S. population is still growing, so the country is in better shape than other rapidly-aging, advanced, industrial countries, such as Japan, where the population is shrinking. Relatively modest reforms to entitlement programs for retirees could put them on a sound financial footing, with money left over to fund education, health care and other needs of young people. During the Obama years, however, the president episodically tackled entitlement reform only to see compromise fail over tax increases, which he favored and Republicans opposed. In the end, some tweaks – a fix to Medicare’s annual spending growth formula and new rules for Social Security disability insurance – have been enacted. But we are left with a problem that, while still manageable, becomes less so with each passing year.

In neglecting these truths during his speech, Obama was no different from most of the Republican candidates who would succeed him, or, indeed, the Democrats. Still, we hold him to a higher standard, for two reasons. First, he pledged, shortly before taking office, that “we have to signal seriousness” on entitlements “by making sure some of the hard decisions are made under my watch, not someone else’s.” Second, in a speech billed as both a valedictory of sorts and a broad look at the future, he owed the public more.

As a progressive Democrat, Obama was as well-positioned to issue a final admonition on entitlements as President Eisenhower, the former general, was to warn against the “military-industrial complex” in his 1961 farewell speech. So far, opportunity missed.

The need for lawsuit reform in Illinois should be self-evident, but for those who still do not get it, here is your sign. The annual “Judicial Hellholes” report from the American Tort Reform Foundation named Madison County, Illinois, as one of the “Five Worst Judicial Hellholes” in the country.

been a magnet for personal injury lawyers and plaintiffs from all over the country who clog our courts with junk lawsuits that have nothing to do with Illinois, all in the hopes of striking it rich playing our state’s plaintiff-friendly lawsuit lottery. These greedy personal injury lawyers have turned the “Land of Lincoln” into the “Land of Lawsuits.”

The solution is lawsuit reform.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has proposed common-sense lawsuit reforms as part of his “Turnaround Agenda.” Gov. Rauner understands

these reforms work.

Illinoisans should contact their legislators and ask them if they will stand with the personal injury lawyers, who are the only ones who profit from this unfair system, or the small businesses and individual citizens who are far too frequently targets of unfair frivolous lawsuits and are made to pay for personal injury lawyer greed.

Outdoor game nets unforgettable experience

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com ROSEMONT – In most hockey games, the final score is important.

While the Fox Valley Hawks did secure a 5-1 win over the south suburban-based Cobras Saturday morning, it was all about the experience.

The game was played outdoors – at Rosemont’s MB Financial Park – as the teams adopted what has become an annual event in the National Hockey League, but calling theirs the Rosemont Winter Classic on Saturday morning.

“This is something these kids will never forget,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said.

“Wins and losses come and go as the season goes, but you get them outside and playing in a place like this, they are going to be talking about it until we do it next year. For the seniors, it’s something they could be talking about for their entire lives.”

Wondering if during the game the players were able to let the experience sink in, while also trying to make sure to play simple on an ice surface that offered different challenges than most players were used to, Hawks starting goaltender and Batavia student Aaron Karkos offered a big smile.

Karkos was able to watch the second half from the bench, after pitching a shutout in the first half before Gabrielsen gave way to backup goaltender Will Lesswing in the second of two 25-minute halves.

“It’s really cool to be outside. It’s a completely different atmosphere,” Karkos said.

“The fact that the guys played a strong game in front of me in the first (half), it gave me a few moments to look around and see everything. It’s cool in here.”

The team’s captain, Trevor Kurtzahls, a St. Charles North senior, said while picking up the win made the experience that much more enjoyable, it was hard not to pick the brains of many of his teammates throughout.

“We kept making jokes on the bench and saying how awesome it was,” Kurtzahls said.

“Today was about having fun and there’s no doubt that all of us did that today from the moment we stepped on the ice.”

Kurtzahls really did mean the team enjoyed Saturday from start to finish, as the

Hawks scored the game’s first goal – a breakaway by Brock Williams – and ended it with one as the buzzer sounded – off the stick of Jake Raymer – prompting even more smiles.

Gabrielsen said he felt the weather cooperated for the most part, staying cold enough to contribute to the experience but not to the point where it was uncomfortable.

Hawks defenseman Zack Rittenberg thought slightly differently. While there is a chill from the ice when playing indoors, Saturday definitely took some getting used to considering the elements.

“It was cold,” the Geneva student said with a laugh.

“The sun was also an issue

that we talked about a lot, but we got over that pretty quickly. Those two elements aren’t something you deal with in normal games, but it honestly made the experience that much better.”

Aside from the win and seeing the smiles on each of the varsity players’ faces, along with the anticipation of the JV Hawks team taking the ice against the Cobras JV team after the varsity contest, Gabrielsen seemed most excited about the future of playing these types of games.

The coach’s hope for coming years is that many players know when joining the Fox Valley Hawks that an outdoor game will always be on the

schedule in Rosemont.

“It’s a spectacular venue they have here,” Gabrielsen said. We’re planning on doing it again next year against the same team, and hopefully are able to make this into some sort of a tradition so that players can expect to get this type of experience at least once a year.

Both teams are interested, and I have a hard time believing the kids aren’t going to want to keep playing these games, so we’re excited about that opportunity in the future.”

Saturday marked the first outdoor game in the Hawks’ team history. With the optimism surrounding the success of the event, it’s a strong possibility that it won’t be the last.

NOTEWORTHY ’Dogs set for road tests

Batavia is comfortable with its position atop the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. But comfortable and complacent are two different things.

Sweeping the first round of games in the division – six in all – the Bulldogs are not complacent, knowing what kind of road lies ahead. They have taken care of business and, most importantly, have done so by defending their home court.

Of its first six conference games, only two were played away from Batavia – wins against Elgin and Streamwood.

That means trips to Geneva, Larkin, St. Charles East and St. Charles North await in the conference schedule’s second half.

“To be a championship caliber team, you have to go through these kinds of stretches,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said.

“It’s these kinds of challenges that our guys welcome. But to be the team we want to be, we have to face them and do well.”

It is a challenge that many of the Bulldogs welcome, including standout senior guard Canaan Coffey. He leads a group of now well-traveled Bulldogs to road tests against some of the conference’s top teams, who are going to be out for revenge in each of the games.

Jensen: ‘I don’t think it really hurts’

“All their height is at times hard to deal with,” Jensen said. “A lot of times we’ve had teams with someone (6-foot-2) or a little taller match up with our players, but you don’t see another 6-2 helping in back.”

Despite its woes late in the first half, Batavia (16-5) still only trailed, 33-22, at the break.

Any hopes of rallying, however, ended pretty quickly as

Fremd shut out the Bulldogs in the third quarter, 15-0, to basically seal the game with a 48-22 lead entering the final quarter.

Frazier, who scored 18 of Batavia’s 29 points, scored the Bulldogs only basket of the second half with 7:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs shot 1 for 20 in the second half while picking up their final five points at the free-throw line.

“I thought we might compete a little better with them in the second half, but we couldn’t throw it in the ocean,” Jensen said. “We did get some good shots, but everything rolled out. We never quite felt comfortable, and when we did get a shot, nothing felt as good as it should have.”

Brianna Lewis (Texas Southern) and Grace Tworek (Harvard) scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to lead Fremd.

“They were what I was expecting,” Jensen said.

What he didn’t expect was for his Bulldogs to shoot so poorly. They shot just 24 percent from the field (10 of 41) while Fremd connected at a 49 percent clip (26 of 53).

ROSEMONT – Saturday morning was the Fox Valley Hawks’ turn to play an outdoor game at the ice rink at MB Financial Park against the Cobras – a combined team made of players from Oak Lawn, Shepard, Tinley Park, Evergreen Park, Andrew and Stagg high schools.

The Hawks did not disappoint their fans, who were in attendance with game time temperatures in the low 20s, scoring four goals in the second half of the game for a 5-1 win.

“We just treated this game like any other game,” Hawks forward Tyler Campise (St. Charles East) said. “The last time we played the Cobras, they beat us. So we owed them one.

They moved the puck pretty well on us today, I thought. I think we started out slow because the ice was slower than what we are normally used to.”

The ice surface was not as smooth as usual. There were ruts in the ice, the surface was exposed to bright sunshine throughout most of the game and ice shavings accumulated everywhere.

But this did not deter the Hawks from their winning ways. During a game played in two, 25-minute halves, Fox Valley took a 1-0 lead at the 16:20 mark of the opening half when

forward Brock Williams (Kaneland) took a feed from Campise and beat Cobras goalie Cole Urban from in close.

“I got some good looks today at the net,” Campise said. “It was kind of like pond hockey out there. So it wasn’t too bad.”

“I think we were more just focused on coming and having fun here this morning,” Hawks forward Jake Raymer (St. Charles North) said. “It’s was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences for us as a team and so we just wanted to enjoy it. We just wanted to come out and force them into mistakes.

We played them just after Christmas and we came out flat against them. We did not want that to happen again.”

The goalie rotation was pre-determined by Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen, who started the game with Aaron Karkos in net. Karkos would then be relieved by Will Lesswing, who finished the contest, giving up one goal at the 12:46 mark.

“The glare was pretty bad at times out there for sure,” Lesswing said. “The sun was like right in my eyes when I was out there. There was no goalie crease area so it was hard to adjust where the net was behind me at times and there was a lot of snow on the ice so it was hard to slide from side to side to cover the net.”

VILLA PARK – Batavia went back and forth with Fremd during the first 11 minutes of Monday’s game in the 26th annual Subway Chicagoland Girls Prep Basketball Classic.

The next 21 minutes were simply forgettable as the Vikings broke a 17-17 tie and proceeded to go on a 16-0 run.

They didn’t slow down, handing the Bulldogs their most lopsided loss of the season, 65-29, at Willowbrook.

“It’s a tough one, and once things kind of unraveled it was hard to get back on track,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “I told the girls it’s not a sectional or a conference team so the only thing it could have done is helped Hannah us. I don’t think Frazier it really hurts.”

What hurt the Bulldogs most was Fremd (18-2) switching to a zone defense. That not only gave the Bulldogs problems, but it also appeared to ignite the Vikings offense.

“We went to a zone there just to do something different,” Fremd coach Dave Yates said. “Hannah Frazier is a great player. I thought that was one good adjustment, and then we started doing what our game plan was, which was to limit her touches and get some backside help.”

WEST CHICAGO – Senior Cole Cartee rolled a 1,368 over six games Saturday, earning individual medalist honors to boost the host St. Charles East boys bowling team to an IHSA regional title at Bowling Green Sports Center.

East had a team pinfall of 6,136, topping runner-up Lake Park (5,945) and the rest of the 13-team field. Dean Mudlong (1,223), Kyle Middendorf (1,180) and Andrew Culbertson (1,162) were the Saints’ next best scorers as the team qualified for the Lake Park Sectional at the Brunswick Zone in Roselle on Saturday.

Geneva and St. Charles North finished fifth and sixth, respectively, narrowly missing the top four cut for sectionals. Three Vikings advanced as individuals: Jordan Soto (1,227), Mario Gelfuso (1,214) and John Zupke (1,161). Alex Mundt rolled a 1,175 to advance for North.

Steel top Lumberjacks in return home

Playing the club’s first home game since Dec. 12, the Chicago Steel defeated the Muskegon (Michigan) Lumberjacks, 3-1, on Sunday at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The Steel increased their season total to 35 points, improving to 15-17-3-2.

Haralds Egle scored the game-winning goal for the Steel, while goaltender John Lethemon made 30 saves to earn the victory. The Steel will return to home ice at 7 p.m. Saturday, facing Cedar Rapids on “Stone Cold Steel Night,” a professional wrestling tribute promotion.

Trying to be politically correct in the antiques and collectibles world is becoming more and more difficult. Watch out for endangered species discussions and laws. Are we protecting living elephants by making it illegal to sell any ivory, even carvings or teapot handles, made over 100 years ago? Watch out for stereotypes. Is it trying to change history to delete vocabulary and cartoonish figurines from 100 years ago? Unflattering depictions of suffragettes or Shylock are tolerated, but a Confederate flag, a Chinese man with a queue or a black child with an alligator or non-PC word embossed on a bank must be omitted in a “for sale” ad. And which firearms can be legally sold at antiques auctions without special permits? Is a cannon OK? Recently, a life-size iron figure of a woman wearing a painted late-19th-century carnival costume was sold at auction. She is a shooting-gallery target, part of the history of a past lifestyle. She sold for over $43,000, even though she had marks from shots and some repairs. Times have changed - no shooting gallery would have a human target, but one from the past is an historic artifact. *** Q: I have two lions from Bennington Vermont ceramics from the year 1849. I’d like to sell them. One of them was damaged, but I can get it fixed and restored. Is it worth it?

A: A lot of fake Bennington has

been made. The lions should be seen by an expert to determine if they are the original old Bennington or more recent reproductions. Contact a good auction house or antiques shop. Prices for Bennington have dropped in the past 5 years. It might pay to fix the damaged lion so you can sell them as a pair. A pair is worth more than two singles. *** Q: I found a Speedball Linoleum Cutter made by Hunt Manufacturing Co. It’s in its original box. The blades are in their own little box. It says there are supposed to be five blades, but there are nine. What can you tell me about it, and how much is it worth?

A: The company began when C. Howard Hunt started a pen manufacturing company in Camden, New Jersey, in 1899. The company became well-known when it introduced the Speedball nib, which made lettering faster, in 1913. It began making linoleum cutters and other accessories for block printing in 1936. The company name was changed to Hunt Manufacturing Co. in 1962. It was restructured in 1997 and now makes linoleum cutters and other art products under the name Speedball in Statesville, N.C. New and used linoleum cutters sell online for under $10. *** Q: I have a bunch of old movie posters that were used outside of theaters. They include “Singing in the Rain,” “Hunt for Red October” and several others. Are they worth anything? How would I sell them?

An eagle and other symbols are also embossed on it.

The back of the plaque is embossed with the names of the officers of the Supreme Council. We would like to know the approximate value and any history behind it.

A: The initials “A. and A.S.R.” stand for Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, a Masonic organization founded in 1801. The House of the Temple, the headquarters of the Supreme Council, is located

in Washington, DC, and was dedicated in 1915. Your bronze plaque probably was made in quantity so that members could purchase them when the building was dedicated.

Information on the actual number made may be available at the headquarters or at the Grand Lodge Scottish Rite Museum in Minneapolis. We haven’t seen a commemorative plaque like yours sell.

It doesn’t have wide appeal, but it does have historic value for Masons or people who are interested in the building. Bronze plaque prices are determined by size and the fame of the artist. Most sell for $30 to $100. *** Q: My sister and I have been going through the contents of our parents’ house trying to determine whether to donate, sell, or give away things. There are a number of linens from the 1940s and ‘50s, antique lace from the early 1900s, a silk nightgown from the 1940s, and baby clothes from the late 1950s to early 1960s. We feel these aren’t items for a garage sale, but wonder if you can tell us how to find someone who purchase these types of items.

A: Old linens are hard to sell.

Look for dealers or shops in your area who specialize in vintage clothes and textiles, but don’t expect to get much for them. Usable vintage clothing, like the nightgown or baby clothes, can bring $5-$100 in a shop- - much less in a garage sale. *** Tip: A drawer that is stuck can be helped by heat. Remove any nearby drawers, then aim a blow dryer set

Note to readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in November 2012.

Dear Dr. K: A friend

abdominal muscles. Take a slow, deep breath. The air coming in through your nose should move downward into your lower belly.

That, in turn, should cause your abdomen to expand.

You should feel it. Now breathe out through your mouth. Your abdomen will get smaller.

Once you’re comfortable with diaphragmatic breathing, move on to breath focus. As you sit comfortably with your eyes closed, combine your breathing with helpful imagery and a focus phrase to help you relax. Imagine that the air you breathe in washes peace and calm into your body. Imagine that the air leaving your body carries tension and anxiety away.

As you inhale, think to yourself, “Breathing in peace and calm.” And as you exhale, think, “Breathing out tension and anxiety.” Start by doing 10 minutes of breath focus.

Gradually work up to sessions that are about 15 to 20 minutes long.

There are other ways to trigger the relaxation response besides breath focus.

For example, there is a technique called progressive muscle relaxation, and one called autogenic training. None has proven superior to the other. Most of my patients (and friends) who have tried to induce the relaxation response have used breath focus.

Since that day of freedom, I’ve raised two daughters while working full-time and attending college at night. It’s been 11 years since I took matters into my own hands, and I feel great!

My girls are well-adjusted, loving mothers and they both married men who love and stand by them rather than on them.

Declarer won with her jack and planned to draw two rounds of trumps, then try to discard her diamond losers on dummy’s top spades.

When the club queen obligingly dropped under the ace, South claimed 13 tricks: seven clubs, three hearts and three spades.

If West had led a diamond, declarer would have had to avoid a trump loser.

The percentage play is a first-round finesse, which would have been fatal here.
