Donate blood and help save lives EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar I was speaking with my mom the other day, when she mentioned to me that we would soon – once again – be able to donate blood together.

Regular readers of this column might recall that I often write about donating blood this time of year, as January is National Blood Donor Month.

“January is the highest transfusion month of the year, as patients who can delay their non-emergency surgeries and treatments do so until after the holidays,” states the Heartland Blood Centers website, www. heartlandbc.org. “Because blood has a limited shelf-life, blood donors are needed continuously to ensure that inventories do not drop be-

low anticipated transfusion levels.”

I am not able to donate blood until April, as I traveled into a certain zone of the Dominican Republic on my honeymoon last year that has been flagged by the facility where I often donate blood.

It’s a precautionary measure.

“To be a blood donor, individuals must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with written parental permission; weigh at least 110 pounds; be symptom free of cold, flu and allergies; and be in general good health,” states www.heartlandbc.org. “Donors who have traveled outside the United States within the past 12 months should contact Heartland at 800-7 TO-GIVE to determine eligibility.”

In addition to helping save lives, those who donate blood at a Heartland center or Heartland blood drive this

month will receive a free T-shirt.

In Kane County, Heartland has locations in Geneva, Elgin and Aurora.

It also lists blood drives throughout the county on its website.

Missing the eastern screech owl’s sounds Last week in this space, we took a look at the life and times of Strix varia, the barred owl.

Although still considered a rare species in Kane County, it seems to be increasing its range throughout our area.

Thanks to those who responded to our request for sightings, we now know of barred owls in the townships of Sugar Grove, Blackberry, Batavia, Campton and St. Charles.

While barred owls are becoming more common, it has me wondering what’s going on with another local species. Little Megascops asio, the eastern screech owl, at least from what I’ve been seeing, are getting harder and harder to find.

When I first moved to St. Charles 23 years ago, screech owls were one of the first neighbors I met. They and I shared a common bond of being nocturnal by nature.

When I was up late, they were, too. Their distinctive trills and haunting whinnies – some of the neatest night sounds around – were a regular part of my night-time strolls.

But for the past 10 years or so, my screech companions are nowhere to be found. That they may have moved away from my neighborhood isn’t itself that unusual. Individuals of any species will move around in response to changing conditions. What has me more than a little concerned about screech owls is that I’m not the only one who’s missing them.

They’ve had a few challenges in recent years, for sure.

Great horned owls appear to be doing very well, particularly in eastern Kane County. Despite the development – or maybe because of it – the species is thriving in St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia. And guess what preys on screech owls?

Yep, great horned owls.

Guess what else?

Yep, barred owls.

Other potential threats to screeches in our area include habitat loss (I know the open space where “my” screeches used to nest has houses on it now) as well as roving oppor-

GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto tunists like raccoons and feral cats. Also, in a twist of irony, screech owls sometimes are displaced from their cavity nests by European starlings – a bird the screeches sometimes consume.

I guess this all is my very roundabout way of asking this week’s nature question: Have you seen or heard eastern screech owls in our area and, if so, where and when?

Last week, when I asked the same question for barred owls, I suggested using the photo that had been supplied for reference. I would do the same for this week, except that screech owls aren’t quite so easily identified.

Among their many cool characteristics is the fact that this single species is

dichromatic – it has two color variations, gray and red. Dark streaks on individuals of either color aid in camouflage and help these small owls blend in against the tree bark they are so often perched near.

By small, we’re talking less than 10 inches in height. In fact, this small stature, combined with the feather tufts on top of the head, cause some people to believe they are looking at a young great horned owl rather than a screech owl.

Thing is, by the time a young GHO is old enough to leave the nest, although it may be only a couple of months old, it will match its parents in height – around 20 inches, or twice the size of a screech owl.

Look – and listen – for screech owls in areas of mature trees. They rely on tree cavities for nesting as well as for winter roosts, so if the trees are mature enough to have holes in them, all the better.

If you find a screech, great!

I would love to hear about it. If you used to have them and now you don’t, bummer. But if it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to hear about those instances, too.

St. Charles library officials continue to look toward future

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When voters five years ago denied a $35 million referendum for the St. Charles Public Library, the facility missed an opportunity to nearly double its size.

Although the Board of Trustees hasn’t pursued another referendum since, that doesn’t mean it has given up on improving the library.

Board President Tory Haines said library officials are constantly looking at ways to make the building at 1 S. Sixth Ave. in St. Charles more inviting and useful.

“We want the library to be everything that the public wants and needs it to be,” she said, adding people continue to ask for more meeting space and private study areas. “The way the public uses the library changes on an ongoing basis.”

Highlights from the 201415 annual report – the most recent one available – show a 232 percent rise in the use of streaming, downloadable and electronic content while the use of print resources declined by nearly 5 percent and the use of DVDs, CDs and audiobooks dropped by 12.5 percent.

Additionally, Internet use in the library increased by 36.6 percent, and the in-person technology class attendance increased by 33 percent, according to the report. About 54 percent of the district’s 55,092 residents had library cards that year, which, the library reported, represented an increase of 7.6 percent.

While the library district’s population hasn’t grown as projected – one analysis placed estimates at 56,417 in 2010 and 59,704 in 2015 – Director Pam Leffler wrote in an email that residency exceeds the facility’s capacity by more than 25 percent.

Plans for the failed referendum included expanding the 55,000-square-foot facility to about 100,000 square feet that would have given the library more study rooms, a larger space for young adults, family restrooms, special needs spaces and furnishings in youth services, a coffee and refreshment area, a permanent Friends of the Library book sale area, a meeting room with a capacity of 200, two story rooms for children, an expanded technology center, more individual study and reading areas and, among other features, about 50 percent more space for books, DVDs and other collection materials.

In 2014, the library underwent a small-scale renovation project that brought improve-

ments to such spaces as the main lobby and staircase, the young adult loft area, youth services, the reader services desk and the reference desk, Leffler wrote. Computer stations were added in multiple areas, she wrote, adding the used book sale area was also revamped.

A host of cosmetic changes – including carpet replacement and new paint, wallpaper and signage – also was completed at that time, she wrote.

“The improvements made in FY2014 were planned to be utilized in a future expansion, if necessary,” Leffler wrote.

She noted that the board is working with architects and staff to determine services and programs that will best meet the needs of the library community. A timeline for major

improvements is still being developed, she wrote.

Leffler indicated that the board has allocated about $8.5 million in a special reserve fund for future renovation and potential expansion.

Haines credited the St. Charles Library Foundation and the Friends of St. Charles Public Library for the assistance they provide.

“They’ve been very wonderful to the library,” she said.

The family of an Aurora man, who was critically injured last month in a car crash in Sugar Grove, is reaching out through a GoFundMe account for financial help in paying for medical costs.

David Alvarado, 20, was injured at about 9:30 a.m. Dec. 15 on Galena Boulevard while pushing a 2010 Toyota Yaris in the westbound lanes, where the road goes over Route 56, police have said. He was struck from behind by a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Jorge Espinosa, 18, of Aurora. Espinosa was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and with not having a valid driver’s license.

The GoFundMe page – www. gofundme.com/deardavid – has raised $4,715 of the $50,000 being sought as of early Friday night.

Alvarado is at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, said his aunt, Heidy Solis, of Aurora. Solis said well-wishers can reach her via email at road2drecovery@yahoo.com.

“He lost his right leg, and his left leg is broken,” Solis said.

“He does have insurance, but [the fundraising] is to cover whatever insurance won’t.”

Solis said Alvarado is the oldest of three boys and was very athletic at East Aurora High School. She said he ran track and David cross country Alvarado and played football. He also played basketball while in middle school, she said.

“He did do cross country for Waubonsee Community College, too,” Solis said. “He was a very athletic person.”

Solis said her nephew recently had visited Western Illinois University and Valparasio University, as well as Aurora University, in preparing for where he wanted to go after finishing at Waubonsee. Alvarado was on the spring and fall dean’s lists according to Waubonsee’s website, www.waubonsee.edu.

“He had really good grades.

He was a good student. His dad and mom did not go to college.

It was really important that he did something with his life and have a career,” Solis said.

“Sometimes, he wanted to

work full time and put his studies on hold, but his parents said no. They wanted him to finish,” Solis added. “This is a big tragedy for them, too, [and] any help is welcome.”

The family is not used to asking for help, Solis wrote in an email.

“His parents usually try to manage and find a way, rather than asking for help, but due to this overwhelming tragic incident, we, as David’s family, are trying to do this – namely for David,” Solis said in the email.

When the crash occurred, the family had driven to Mexico to visit relatives they had not seen in more than a decade, Solis said.

“The first few days, they were not sure he was going to make it,” Solis said. “He had facial and head injuries, a collapsed lung and a bruised heart.

He was on life support and had a tracheotomy.”

The family is hopeful that Alvarado will recover, Solis said.

“He is showing progress, and that is keeping our hopes up,” she said. “Sometimes with bad accidents, they lose all hope.

He worked so hard to reach his goals and dreams. Hopefully, everything will go well, and he will come back to where he was.”

Elburn’s village admin to resign

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The agenda for the upcoming meeting of the Elburn Village Board includes an item to “consider and approve” the resignation of Village Administrator Erin Willrett.

“All I can say is that it’s a board decision,” Village President Dave Anderson said.

Willrett has been in that role for the village since 2008.

“If I had to make the decision all over again to appoint an administrator, I would not hesitate one second to appoint Erin Willrett,” Anderson said.

The board meets at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn.

Last month, Elburn’s police chief, Steve Smith resigned. He has been replaced

on an interim basis by former Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez.

Anderson said the village can receive some interim help with the village administrator position from the Illinois City/County Management Association.

He said he aims to be able to name a new administrator and police chief when it is time to make the appointments for the year.

Among other items on the upcoming agenda: • The village is set to make the latest payment for the modernization of the wastewater treatment facility.

• On the Committee of the Whole agenda, there is an item to “discuss acquisition of parcels in Blackberry Creek subdivision to install [a] temporary recreation path and other public amenities.”

The deadline is Jan. 31.

The St. Charles Fine Art Show is set for Memorial Day weekend, May 28 and 29.

It is expected to feature more than 100 artists of various mediums and will give artists more than $6,000 in

artist merit awards, according to the release.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva police have denied an open records request pertaining to the death of a 26-year-old man on McKinley Street because the death is under investigation.

The body of David C. Burdine was removed from a house in the 700 block of McKinley Street on Jan. 5. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics, Chief Deputy Coroner Loren Carrera had said.

The Kane County Chronicle filed an Freedom of Information Act request, seeking the police report regarding the circumstances of Burdine’s death last week.

Among various exemptions allowed by state law is the right to withhold records when law enforcement is conducting an investigation, which is the reason cited for not releasing the police report.

“I am denying your request for [a] copy of [the] report regarding the death of David Burdine because it is under investigation, which is exempt under the ... Illinois Freedom of Information Act,” according to the letter of denial.

In a phone text, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell wrote that Burdine’s death was not trauma-related, but his office was waiting on toxicology information in order to make

St. Charles issues snowplow safety tips editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – With wintry weather upon the area, the city of St. Charles on Wednesday issued a set of snowplow safety reminders for motorists and property owners.

“The city maintains approximately 171 miles of local roadways, and coordinates maintenance, including plowing operations, for certain sections of state and county routes that run through the city limits,” Public Works Manager A.J. Reineking stated in the release. “Our computerized forecasting system allows us to monitor

the weather, so crews can be scheduled and ready to respond around the clock.”

The safety tips are as follows: • Remind children to stay clear of snowplows.

• When driving, stay at least 100 feet behind moving snowplows. Do not pass them.

Also, yield the right of way to vehicles with flashing lights that are plowing, salting or performing maintenance work.

• Do not blow snow from driveways into the street.

That creates dangerous situations for others and violates city ordinances.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A Batavia man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for taking nude photographs of a child he knew, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Ernesto Navarro-Romero, 41, agreed to plead guilty to a Class X felony of producing child pornography Friday, in exchange for the sentence. Associate Judge Linda Abrahamson accepted it, according to the release.

The incident occurred Nov. 8, 2014, when the victim was younger than 13. Navarro-Romero used his smartphone to photograph the victim, according to the release.

The victim told a family member about the incident, and the family member then reported it to authorities, according to the release.

In addition to the prison term, Navarro-Romero must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act, according to the release.

He also could be subject to commitment as a sexually violent or sexually dangerous person, according to the release.

According to Illinois law, Navarro-Romero is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. He receives credit for at least 428 days served in the Kane County jail.

ST. CHARLES – An employee of the Kane County Circuit Clerk’s Office was charged with felony theft of money she was responsible for as part of her employment, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Kelli D. Brackett, 39, most recently of the 15S block of Farnsworth Avenue, Aurora, was charged with theft, a Class 2 felony; forgery, a Class 3 felony; official misconduct, a Class 3 felony; and tampering with records as a public official, a Class 3 felony.

Authorities allege that between Sept. 1, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015, Brackett knowingly stole more than $500 from the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk’s office and knowingly altered court records, according to the news release. After a warrant for her arrest was issued, Brackett surrendered Friday to the custody of the Kane County Sheriff and was released on $500 bail, 10 percent of the $5,000 bond that

was set.

She is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 5 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Kane County Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell said Brackett, who has been an employee about eight years, was put on paid leave while her court case is pending. According to online salary records, Brackett was earning a salary of $28,069 under her married last name of Castro. Hartwell said she is divorced and returned to her premarried name of Brackett.

Hartwell said he could not comment about details of the alleged theft because those at his office could be called as witnesses.

Men, women of Steel build hockey brand Chicago Steel president Dan Lehv realizes it takes a few extra seconds to explain how his junior hockey team fits into the professional sports pipeline. It’s not as direct a path as the Steel’s baseball neighbors on the Kirk Road corridor, the Kane County Cougars, the Class-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Steel, which relocated from Bensenville to Fox Valley Ice Arena during the summer of 2015, compete in the United States Hockey League, the lone tier-I junior league in the U.S. Sixteen players are committed to NCAA Division I programs. Still a few more were drafted

by NHL teams last summer.

Such prospects do not guarantee a player pro glory, but they do make it possible.

If certainties are what you are after, Lehv and a diligent staff still suggest checking out a game at Fox Valley. An affordable, family-friendly atmosphere awaits, as does a good share of glitz. The team is set to unveil a new, team-funded, state-of-theart scoreboard at Sunday’s 3 p.m. game against Muskegon (Michigan), its first home action in more than a month.

The scoreboard features large, high-definition video displays and also will play a role in light shows.

Lehv, 36, hopes the board helps Fox Valley begin a transformation into an entertainment venue. Through 13 home games, the club has an average attendance of 646 fans. The arena’s capacity, including suites and standing room tickets, is close to 3,000.

All things considered, Lehv said the team is satisfied with its steady growth since the season began in late September.

“It takes awhile to build that infrastructure. It takes awhile to train a staff.

It takes awhile to go and tell the story,” he said. “It’s not like we’re a National Hockey League franchise that’s all of a sudden coming to Geneva.”

That’s correct. And although the USHL might not be affiliated with the NHL, common bonds certainly exist. Go ahead.

Add a little sugar information to nutrition labels BLOOMBERG VIEW Americans have a sweet tooth, and the obesity and diabetes rates to prove it.

The best way to help people eat less sugar is to let them know how much of it is in their foods. Yet a sensible plan to inform consumers about the amount of sugar added to packaged products is under fire from the food industry and politicians. The Food and Drug Administration should stand strong and stick with the plan when it issues its final rules this year.

The FDA has proposed requiring a new line in the nutrition label for “added sugars” – just below the line for total sugar. The label may also specify how much of the recommended daily allowance of added sugars the product contains, out of a maximum of roughly 12 teaspoons.

Added sugar deserves a line of its own because it’s empty calories. Many nutritious products contain natural sugars: A cup of cherries or grapes can have more than 15 grams, and a cup of 1 percent milk has 13 grams. Yet this sugar comes along with essential nutrients; that glass of milk contains 16 percent of the protein a healthy adult needs each day, and

30 percent of the calcium.

In contrast, refined cane sugar, corn syrup and the like that are added to foods and drinks during processing (also called “free sugars”) offer no additional nutrients.

Americans now get about 13 percent of their daily calories from them, largely through soda and other beverages, breakfast cereals and frozen desserts.

A can of Coca-Cola has more than 9 teaspoons (39 grams) of added sugars. But even products not considered sweet contain them; a tablespoon of ketchup has about 4 grams. A study of 80,000 products on supermarket shelves found that 58 percent contained added sugar. And although total U.S. consumption has declined in recent years, only 30 percent of Americans eat less added sugar than the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend.

The food industry has three objections to the labeling requirement. The first is that Americans won’t know what to make of the information about added sugar.

That might be true, but neither were many Americans familiar with trans fats when they were added to nutrition labels in 2006.

And since that rule was passed, thanks also to greater media atten-

tion and information campaigns, people cut their consumption of trans fats by more than 75 percent.

(Last year the FDA decided to ban them altogether.) In any case, if most consumers won’t pay attention, what do food manufacturers stand to lose from the disclosure?

Food makers also argue that the science suggesting added sugars should be limited is not settled. And it’s true there’s not a lot of good data on added sugar’s connection to health problems.

But there’s significant evidence that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked with obesity.

Finally, food makers object that almost all packaged-food labels already list added sugars. That’s technically true, but the industry engages in all sorts of tricks to hide them, for example by including several different types in a single product so that they appear as low as possible in the ingredients list, which is organized by weight in descending order.

The agency has other changes in mind, too, including listing potassium, vitamin D and other vital nutrients that Americans eat too little of. Americans can more easily eat better if they know what’s in their food.

Defensive pressure, Frazier’s big night the difference

St. Charles East girls basketball coach Lori Drumtra knew exactly what the Batavia press would bring Friday night as the Bulldogs traveled to East.

But knowing what’s coming and actually executing against it are two separate things. Batavia led throughout and held off a few runs by the Saints to pick up a 6250 win in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division matchup.

The press – which forced a number of East’s 20 total turnovers – coupled with another dominant night from Hannah Frazier was the difference for the Bulldogs (16-4, 5-1 UEC River).

“The thought was that if we kept things up-tempo, the way we wanted, we would eventually wear them down,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “For the most part, that happened. It got a little bit easier at times when the pressure got to them.”

Frazier added to her strong senior season, scoring 21 of her game-high 29 points in the second half. The 6-foot2 forward also added nine rebounds, blocked five shots and sits 108 points away from tying Liza Fruendt’s school record for career points (1,921) and 187 from the elusive 2,000 mark.

“She’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that,” Drumtra said. “That combined with going too fast sometimes. I literally wrote on the clipboard, ‘Too fast,’ in one of the timeouts we had.

They are a very good team and when their press gets going and Hannah gets going offensively, it’s a tough task for any team.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for Batavia, however. It only led by five at halftime, and the Saints (6-12, 3-3) actually

But after Rinker’s basket from deep, Frazier went on a tear as part of her big second half, scoring 13 points in the final four-plus minutes of the quarter to spread the Bulldogs’ lead back to eight heading to the fourth.

“We’re a team that always runs and I think we picked up the pace a lot in the second half,” Frazier said. “The speed of the game helped me to get good looks after halftime. We still have the confidence that we can beat anyone in this conference, so even when games get close, we have confidence and stay composed in those spots.”

Noticeably tired as the

game wore down was East point guard Sam Munroe.

The junior finished with a team-high 17 points, knocking down two 3-pointers. She expected the pressure from the Bulldogs for most of the night, but even admitted it

was able to wear her Saints down.

“Batavia has a great press ... I give all the kudos to them,” Munroe said. “We needed to get the ball and push it up the floor sometimes. It was definitely tough because they push us toward the sidelines and try to trap right there.

You don’t have time to react most of the time.”

It also helped that after Frazier was able to help Batavia push the lead to eight after three quarters, the Bulldogs opened the fourth scoring 11 of the first 14 points, only slightly halted by the second of Munroe’s 3’s.

One thing Jensen was adamant about was that there is more to the team than Frazier. Sure, the senior is

close to being the school’s alltime leader in points and rebounds, but there are a lot of statistics that go unnoticed in his eyes.

“I don’t have the exact numbers, but I kept looking up and seeing five points, six points, four points,” Jensen said. “Hannah may have been the only one in double figures, but there were some big shots made at times tonight. Hailey (Orman) knocked down a couple of 3’s, Elena (Cabrera) had some good minutes off the bench, too. We’re a pretty tough team when those pieces are clicking.”

Cabrera finished with seven points, while Jessica Koch, and Bethany and Hailey Orman added six apiece for the Bulldogs.

1st football season comes at Penn State

Tyler Davis drilled a 34yard field goal and a pair of extra points for the Penn State football team in the Taxslayer Bowl against Georgia this month.

It used to be Davis worried about clearing a free kick wall.

The behemoths trying to influence his kicks these days are a Tyler Davis bit more active and ornery.

“You have to hit it pretty hard and pretty quick to get it over the line,” Davis said, “because those guys are huge and cam jump extremely high.”

Davis converted each of his eight field goal attempts and all 11 extra points as a redshirt sophomore placekicker for the Nittany Lions, a reflection of his diligence in a promising debut season.

The St. Charles North graduate began his collegiate athletic career as a Bradley men’s soccer player. Who knew changing states and sports could feel so good?

Davis earned Kane County Chronicle Boys Soccer Player of the Year as a junior in the fall of 2011, scoring 25 goals – including six in four postseason matches. He graduated from North in 2013 and instantly contributed as a true freshman at Bradley as an attacking outside back.

“I loved the soccer,” Davis said, “but just didn’t love the school.”

Thirsty for a larger campus and a bigger business school, Davis ultimately found them as a preferred walk-on at Penn State. Discovering a new niche paved the way.

Arguably, Davis might not have transferred had it not been for working with friend Alec Eickert, a former North

“Messing around” in the summer of 2014, as Davis called it, the duo soon discovered Davis had a talent.

Naturally, he never had seriously kicked a football before.

“I went to a couple camps, did pretty well in the camps and ended up getting recruited by a couple schools,” Davis said. “Penn State was one of the schools, and it really has worked out academically, athletically and socially.”

The Nittany Lions finished 7-6 in 2015, closing the season

with a 24-17 bowl game loss to Georgia at EverBank Field, home of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.

Penn State trailed, 24-3, after three quarters.

“We went down pretty big and then we were making a comeback,” Davis said. “I think if we had one more minute in that game, we would really have been in position to win.”

Davis maintains contact with North boys soccer coach Eric Willson, who he assisted during the 2014 season while spending the bridge semester between his transfer at home.

As with many in his po-

sition, a soccer foundation eased Davis’ transition to placekicking. He now feels the two “go hand in hand.”

Of course, there are different techniques to be mindful of and strategies for striking the football, but Davis still finds himself channeling the right contortion to put his full body into the kick either way.

Through his work with various midwestern kicking gurus, Davis encountered a few Big Ten counterparts before competing against them.

He counts Michigan State kicker Michael Geiger among his friends.

Davis dabbled in kick-

offs but was not Penn State’s full-time contributor in that category. He said he plans to increase his kickoff workload during the offseason in a bid to earn a scholarship.

Davis kicked a season-long, 42-yard field goal in a 39-0 home rout of Illinois on Oct. 31. The kick was true, like all the rest.

“I never had a snap or a hold that threw me off one bit,” Davis said. “A lot of credit goes to them and the line for doing great blocking, too.”

Yes, Davis credited the offensive line for his success.

He’s more of a football player than he knew.

Win one, lose one for Knights

By CHRISTINE BOLIN DASCHER cbolin@shawmedia.com YORKVILLE – The Kaneland girls basketball team was hoping for another win against Yorkville this season, but the Knights did not take advantage of the Foxes’ misses at the free throw line in the clutch and ended up shooting 5 for 12 from the line themselves.

As a result, the Foxes won, 48-47, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference matchup on Friday. Yorkville improved to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the league. The Knights are now 14-2, 3-2.

“When you lose a game by one point and went 5 of 12 from the free throw line, we know we had plenty of opportunities to win this game,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

“Last time we lost, we were able to fix some things and get back to the other side of the scoreboard. But it was a good game. Our kids played hard.

They played hard.”

The last time these two teams played was on Dec. 23, when Kaneland defeated Yorkville, 42-33, in the title game at Ottawa’s Christmas Classic.

There were three ties in the fourth quarter before back-toback buckets from Yorkville pushed the Foxes ahead, 46-42, with 1:19 left to play. A bucket from Camri Conley reduced Yorkville’s lead to 46-44 with less than a minute to play.

In the final 30 seconds, Yorkville went 2 for 6 from the free throw line before Kylie Modaff hit a 3-pointer for Kaneland as time expired. Bailey Crimmins led Kaneland with 14 points.

In the boys game, Kaneland scored the first six points and never trailed, as the Knights defeated Yorkville, 58-44.

With the win, the Knights are now 8-5 overall and 3-1 in NI Big 12 East play. Yorkville dropped to 8-8, 1-3.

The Knights led, 27-18, at halftime and 46-31 going into the final quarter. Dylan Vaca led the way for Kaneland with 20 points.

“We knew it was going to be busy and we knew Yorkville was going to play hard,” Kaneland coach Joe Conroy said.

“For us to get a lead and do some things defensively early was a big boost for us. That was our goal and we were pleased with that.”

One-man show sinks North

North Stars coach Tom Poulin said his squad did nothing to keep Negron from getting into a rhythm.

“We did not have any defensive intensity,” Poulin said. “Negron is the kind of player who can take over a game under normal circumstances, let alone with you

He said opportunities to double Negron and put him under defensive pressure were missed.

Even with Negron’s dominating first quarter, the North Stars (3-9, 1-5 UEC River) were still hanging around with Larkin (9-7, 3-2) after one quarter, trailing just 1413.

“I thought we started off well. We competed and were right there after one quarter,” Poulin said.

However, that one-point deficit turned into a 13-point deficit as the North Stars scored just one point in the

second quarter – a free throw by guard Mikeyl Schroeder.

“We missed a lot of little bunnies,” Poulin said of close-range shots that didn’t fall for the North Stars. … We didn’t set ball screens. We didn’t execute our offense.”

Schroeder led the North Stars with 15 points.

Poulin said the inexperienced North Stars continue to compete, despite being hit by a rash of injuries.

“We continue to play hard,” Poulin said.

Negron also had 11 rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot.

Nine of his points came on 3-pointers.

“It’s a progression,” Carter said of Negron’s 3-point shooting. “First you need to make them in workouts, then you need to make them in practice, and then in games. Each step you face more pressure. Christian has been making those shots in workouts and practice.”

Geneva boys basketball falls in OT

ELGIN – The Geneva boys basketball team has lost three games in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play. Each has come on the road.

The Vikings lost at Elgin, 7364, in overtime on Friday to fall to 14-4 overall and 3-3 in the conference. Geneva trailed by two points entering the fourth quarter, and the game was tied at 58-all at the end of regulation.

‘Meet the Diamondbacks’ event set for Jan. 29

GENEVA – The Cougars will welcome their 2016 field staff and organizational brass when the club hosts a “Meet the Diamondbacks” hot stove event Jan. 29 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

ELGIN – One player does not a team make, but for three quarters Friday night, Larkin’s Christian Negron was about as close as you can get.

“When he is in the zone, he is the best player in the state,” Royals coach Deryn Carter said.

Negron found himself in the zone from the game’s outset, scoring Larkin’s first 11 points.

Cougars skipper, PC recall shared at-bat ... maybe QUICK READ Kevin Druley New Cougars manager Mike Benjamin met new Cougars hitting coach Jonathan Mathews during spring training last season. Benjamin does not know bench coach Shawn Roof, but he has an inkling he encountered pitching coach Rich Sauveur.

“I think we played against each other, because I knew the name right away,” Benjamin said. “But I’ve never met him.”

That will change in two weeks, when the Cougars’ 2016 field staff and brass from the parent Arizona Diamondbacks organization convenes for a hot stove night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Benjamin, an infielder with four teams for parts of 13 major league seasons, since has spoken with Sauveur, a left-hander who pitched at least three innings with six teams in a career spanning three different decades.

Both planned to consult their baseball cards – or the Internet – before month’s end in a bid to pinpoint their onfield confrontation.

“I feel the same way,” Sauveur said. “I feel like I either played against him or on the same team. I don’t know. It might have been winter ball.”

Chicago Steel forward Brandon Duhaime hails from Parkland, Florida, spent last season in British Columbia, Canada and now lives in South Elgin, where he is balancing high school and tier-I junior hockey. A Brown commit, Duhaime, 18, is accustomed to traveling, making the 10-game road trip the Steel will conclude today no big hassle. Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley recently caught up with Duhaime to address the Steel’s progression at midseason and more. After comparing both men’s career pages on baseball-reference.com, it’s likely 1991 was the year Benjamin, 50, faced Sauveur, 52, if their respective memories serve.

That’s the only season they appeared in the same league – Benjamin with the San Francisco Giants and Sauveur with the New York Mets.

Oh yeah, definitely. It’s definitely difficult, but we’ve done a good job of getting ready and taking care of stuff on the road. Obviously, we practice at a few other (road) facilities, but it’s good.

If you had to guess, how many rinks would you say you’ve skated in during your young life?

Hundreds. I couldn’t really tell you, but it’s been a lot.

Then playing over in British Columbia. It’s been a lot, allaround.

Does it take a lot about a place to strike you as, ‘Wow, this is nice?’ Because of that experience?

For sure, you look at that stuff. Touring the Michigan

With the JV following the varsity in a second outdoor game at approximately 10:30 table in there, so we’re pretty excited.

And how about the new scoreboard?

Yeah, I saw that. That was something else. It’s good to see.

You recently almost hopped into the opponent’s bench (in Youngstown, Ohio). How did that happen?

Tough break on that one.

I was going to the bench and everyone was skating on our side, and I went over there and looked up, and it was the Youngstown coaching staff.

So it was a little surprise. … I looked over at (assistant coach Peter) Mannino, and he was laughing pretty hard. So I just went right over to our bench.

“It’s kind of neat getting them from different schools and then getting along so well the way they do,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said.

“They’ve got to be teammates.

Other sports in the schools might be bitter rivals, but when they play hockey, they’ve got to all be good teammates and friends.”

What a release: St. Charles North senior wrestler Jake Chantos relishes the opportunity to compete no matter the circumstances, but Thursday’s home dual against Larkin simply felt more invigorating.

Chantos’ final match before a home crowd also came during the end of final exam week, providing the chance to step away from studying and fix his mind solely on his opponent.

“Yeah, it’s a lot of stress, especially being a senior with college and stuff now,” Chantos said. “It’s pretty stressful with all these finals and studying. It’s a bit relieving to let some stuff out and exercise and all that.”

What have you liked about the team’s development?

We’re taking big steps, and we can see it up and down the lineup. Everyone’s contributing and we’re putting together some good wins. We’ve just got to stay consistent in our game.

How much were you able to get away from hockey over the recent holiday break?

A little. I skated with my buddies three or four times when I was down there and we had workouts … so that was good.

It was good to spend time with the family. … I went to a (Florida) Panthers game, so that was exciting to see. I’m 15 minutes away. Real close to the facility.

First FAFSA filed! Fun, fun, fun! Can I think of some less-savory F-words to describe this experience?

You betcha!

Last week, when I finally got my college-bound son’s butt in the chair (it’s HIS application, after all), I may have hovered a bit, fearing he’d inadvertently, prematurely click SUBMIT on the online application and sentence us both to some deep, dark bottomless rabbit hole of regret.

He didn’t, but I still can hear in my imagination the echo of our pitiful “Noooooo!”s as we spiral forever downward.

Yeah. Glad THAT’S done.

Truth be told, once we faced the daunting task of filing the FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and broke this bad boy down into manageable steps – and then tackled them head-on – they fell like dominoes.

Yes, the process takes time. I read an estimate

that it ranges from 21 to 55 minutes, but in our case it took a bit longer (you know, all of that freaking out about touching the wrong keys and all).

Don’t worry, if you have to let the dog out or a fight breaks out in Candyland or you need to locate another figure on another form – or you find you need a breather (it happens), you can save your progress and return later.

Whatever you do, get started on it sooner, rather than later, though, because once certain first-come, firstserved grant monies dry up, they’re gone.

And the less of those you get, the more heavily you may need to rely upon student loans to pay for college.

And let me tell you, that is FUN with a capital F. One of my Facebook friends agrees: “I’m no longer in school, but I am making hefty monthly payments to repay my loans. So I understand completely. I have

Can’t wait to be rid of them!” she said.

No kidding.

Apply early, and possibly end up saving a few bucks and a lot of aggravation?

Seems like a good game plan to me.

But what about the fact that most of us haven’t yet filed our 2015 tax returns?

Don’t wait! I learned that we’re allowed to use estimates based on our last tax returns, and then go back in and update the FAFSA after we file.

Not only that, but the sooner the FAFSA is completed, the sooner our kids’ prospective schools will be able to put together their financial aid packages, which might include scholarships, additional grant money at

their disposal and those godforsaken loans.

In fact, if you know that your FAFSA doesn’t illustrate your family’s actual fiscal picture, don’t wait to receive your “award letter.”

(I’d love to see “award” changed to “aid,” because loans, while convenient in the short term, certainly are not gifts and must be repaid.)

Contact your child’s admissions officers (all of them) ASAP and request a “Special Circumstance” form, wherein you can explain any extenuating circumstances that will affect your family’s ability to pay for college.

It’s that whole squeakywheel-gets-the-grease thing, right? It can’t hurt, and might help – a lot. Well worth the extra effort.

We’re not alone in our efforts to tame the FAFSA beast, as schools and libraries often offer FAFSA workshops.

I even found some great tips on edvisors.com, where I downloaded a free FAFSA

Although my family declined to employ certain strategies that reportedly enhance one’s apparent need (mentioned herein), reviewing it assuaged any sense that we might overlook something important – and, in fact, helped me to avoid at least one error.

My sincerest apologies if I’ve inspired anxiety, but I’m an information-is-power kind of gal.

My go-to solution for keeping the anxious birds at bay?

Face this stuff head on, people, and just: Get. It. Done.

Get that ball rolling, and you’ll get to the FAFSA finish line eventually.

Establishing an accessible, affordable vegan pantry

By TOM WITOM editorial@kcchronicle.com Longtime vegans Nicole Axworthy and Lisa Pitman share the benefits of the plant-based pantry they created in “DIY Vegan” (St. Martin’s Press).

The two are seasoned cooks and contributing photography and food editors for VegNews Magazine, a key reference for the vegan community worldwide.

Their well-researched book includes more than 100 vegan recipes and instructions on how readers can create their own plant-based pantry at home.

The Toronto-based authors use readily available whole food ingredients that amp up flavors and nutri-

tion.

In introductory notes, Axworthy and Pitman explain how their approach to achieving a vegan lifestyle helps them “make better, healthier and often cheaper (vegan dishes) than anything you can buy. And no labels to read.”

They observe how plantbased, gluten-free diets rank among the fastest-growing dietary trend.

A good example of their approach is provided by their recipe (below) for Vanilla Almond Granola, a comfort food classic.

VANILLA ALMOND GRANOLA Makes 6 cups

• 2 cups rolled oats

TOM’S COOKBOOK LIBRARY Tom Witom • 1 cup chopped raw almonds • 3 ⁄4 cup large coconut flakes • 1⁄4 cup Medjool dates, pitted and chopped • 2 Tbl. uncooked quinoa • 1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise and seeds scraped • 1 tsp. sea salt • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce • 1⁄4 cup pure maple syrup • 4 tsp. pure vanilla extract • 2 Tbl. coconut oil, melted Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, mix together the oats, almonds, coconut, dates, quinoa, vanilla bean seeds and salt.

In another bowl, stir together the applesauce, maple syrup, vanilla extract and coconut oil until smooth.

Pour the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.

Spread the granola evenly over the prepared baking sheets and bake for 55 to 60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.

Halfway through baking, rotate the pans and swap them between the racks in your oven (top to bottom, bottom to top) to be sure the granola bakes evenly.

Let cool completely on the

baking sheets.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three weeks, or in the freezer for up to five months.

Tip: Even though you can fit all the granola on one tray, don’t do it.

The granola needs space so it can crisp up in the oven.

When it is all touching, it just steams and remains soft and wet.

Divide the mixture between two baking sheets.

26 There is a difference between palliative care and hospice Note to Readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in October 2012.

Dear Dr. K: My mother

has a chronic illness. Her doctor told her she needed palliative care. She rejects that because she says palliative care is for patients who have given up.

Dear Reader: Without knowing more about your mother’s chronic illness, it’s hard to answer. But it’s possible your mother may be confusing palliative care with hospice care.

It’s a common mistake.

Hospice and palliative care often are talked about as if they are the same thing, but they’re not.

Hospice is for people who are expected to live only for a short time and who have stopped treatment aimed at prolonging life. Palliative care is medical care that aims to improve a person’s quality of life during any serious illness, fatal or not. So if your mother’s chronic illness is not fatal, then she really may be misunderstanding what palliative care could offer her.

A person can receive palliative care at any stage of his or her illness. In fact, many people could benefit from palliative care starting soon after the diagnosis of a serious illness.

Comfort is the main goal of palliative care. As a result, identifying and managing pain often is the No. 1 priority. Pain by itself can be extremely debilitating; left untreated, it can suppress the immune system and cause depression.

Palliative care also addresses other types of physical discomfort – for example, shortness of breath, fatigue and insomnia. Constipation can be a major problem. In fact, since it’s a common side effect of certain painkillers, successful treatment of pain often requires treatments for constipation, as well. Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy

Psychological and social services, for patients and their caregivers, also are included in palliative care.

Even if patients remain even-keeled and don’t need psychological support, they may well need other kinds of support. That includes help with housework, shopping, preparation of meals and self-care.

Palliative care specialists can help patients set realistic goals and make treatment choices.

If someone is seriously ill, there are often practical issues he or she may need to contend with: financial pressures, insurance discussions, home support services, coordinating doctors’ appointments, dealing with bureaucratic red tape and arranging transportation. Palliative care can help with this, as well.

I had a patient who developed a disabling illness in her 50s. While it wasn’t a “fatal” illness such as cancer, it made it impossible for her to work or carry on most of her responsibilities at home. She knew it was likely that within a year she was going to need lots of help at home – to buy groceries, to cook and to clean.

She told me that even though she didn’t have a fatal disease, she was equally terrified she (a single woman) would be helpless. Palliative care gave her the support she needed.

I hope you can persuade your mother to take a second look at palliative care. It could make a real difference in her quality of life.

Boyfriend feels girl is rushing things Dr.. Wallace: I’m a 16-yearold girl who needs a lot of advice. A guy and I met three weeks ago at a birthday party for a mutual friend. Dr.. Wallace: I live with my mother and her sister (my aunt). Both of them are grossly overweight. The main reason is that they overeat on fattening foods loaded with cream, butter and sauces made with mayonnaise. I’m 15. I also was overweight. I didn’t like the way I looked, so I started a regular walking program and I eat only nutritious fruits and vegetables. In the past three months I’ve lost 15 pounds and I have another 20 pounds to lose.

My aunt is upset because I’m trimming down.

She feels that people are happier when they are large and the idea that overweight people are not healthy is just “junk” put out by the fashion industry. My mom doesn’t say anything because my aunt owns the house.

Utah Madison: Overeating and its

consequence, obesity, is the major nutritional problem of Americans and Canadians, according to Grant Gwinup, professor of medicine at the University of California at Irvine. Overweight people die at increased rates of everything you can think of: heart disease, cancer and diabetes and gall bladder, liver and brain disease.

“The fatter one is, the greater one’s chances are to have these diseases,” says Gwinup.

“Not only do the diseases eventually cause death, they also change the quality of one’s life by destroying one’s health.

Statistics on thin people tend to indicate that the less fat a person carries, the better.”

As long as a person is eating three well-balanced meals a day, Gwinup feels that it is almost impossible to be too thin.

That should keep your aunt quiet for a while.

Continue your healthy eating program. And make sure that Mom and Auntie read this column!

A good strategist surely has foresight, especially when he is a top bridge player. Today’s deal is based on one from last year’s European Open Championships in Tromso, Norway. South is in six spades. What is the percentage play for only one trump loser? How should declarer plan the play after West leads the diamond jack?

The correct play in the trump suit is low to the queen on the first round.

Then, if the finesse loses, you will need the jack to drop under the ace.

The declarer from Finland did exactly that and made the contract because East actually had king-doubleton.

After the queen held, he cashed the spade ace, unblocked the heart ace, played another trump, and claimed.

However, if this had been the layout, notice what might have happened. West would have won with his king and, if in midseason form, would have shifted to a club. Declarer would have won with dummy’s king and continued with the club ace, but East would have ruffed, and South would have eventually lost a diamond trick to go down one.

Thomas Paske from England exhibited foresight by anticipating this possibility. Before taking the spade finesse, he played a heart to his ace, crossed to dummy with a club, and discarded his diamond loser on the heart king.

Then he took the spade finesse.

Well played for no gain – bridge can be like that at times.

preferable to mention the gift when thanking the giver, no rule states that you have to do so. Your niece should start by writing thank-you notes for the gifts that have cards with them, and for those few (I hope few) that don’t, the givers should be told how meaningful it was to have them present on the special day, and thanked for their generosity. Period.

Dear Abby: My girlfriend and I live together. We adopted a cat off the street.

A few months later, the cat became pregnant and had four kittens. We ended up keeping two, and now we have three cats in a one-bedroom apartment.

I’ve tried being OK with it, but it’s making me stressed and unhappy. The litter box must be constantly cleaned; they get into our food and pee on our furniture.

I’ve tried talking to my girlfriend about putting one or two of them up for adoption, but every time I raise the issue, she gets mad and dares me to get rid of them. I don’t want her to resent me, but I also don’t like living in the circumstances I’m living in. Please help. – Surrounded By Cats Dear Surrounded: You and your girlfriend appear to be irresponsible pet owners.

I hope you realize that if the stray cat you adopted had been spayed, this could have been avoided.

The litter box should be cleaned regularly and, because the cats belong to both of you, the responsibility should be shared. If the cats urinate on the furniture, it should be discussed with a veterinarian rather than disposing of them.

That said, you are not married to this woman. If you’re not happy under the current conditions, perhaps it’s time to consider moving.
