wice in the past two weeks I was assigned to visit a local convenience store to photograph Kane County residents purchasing Powerball tickets.

We generally do stories about the lottery when the prize money reaches a large

amount. Little did we know that after our first recent story about the Powerball ran, that no one would win and the pot would roll over to the highest dollar amount in lottery history.

This past Tuesday, it was fun talking to the customers at

the 7-Eleven on State Street in Geneva, where owner Therese Davison was urging people to buy their tickets. Most of the Powerball ticket-holders theorized about what they would do with the money if they won.

If I won, I would travel, help out my friends and family, buy

a house and then travel some more.

Needless to say, I didn’t win millions of dollars. But I still plan to do all of those things.

Kane County sheriff: No policy violations found in jail death KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – After a review of its policies and procedures, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office determined no violations were committed in connection with the death of an arrestee last week, according to a sheriff’s news release issued Thursday.

Preliminary results of an

autopsy conducted Jan. 6 indicated Elgin resident Piotr Dutkiewicz – who was arrested during an eviction on Jan. 5 – died of asphyxia Piotr due to hanging Dutkiewicz himself at the jail, officials have said.

He was arrested that morn-

ing after he put an item – a large battery with wires taped to it – on the ground and said, “bomb,” during the eviction, officials have said.

According to Thursday’s release, Dutkiewicz was screened and cleared by medical staff after entering the intake section of the Kane County Adult Justice Center.

He was interviewed about the events that happened

during the eviction, and deputies contacted the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office for authorization of felony disorderly conduct charges, according to the release.

Dutkiewicz was in the general waiting area of the jail’s intake section pending the completion of the charging documents, the release states,

Among his many tasks as the state’s chief investment officer is to promote programs that support state residents’ efforts to save money for college and retirement, he said Thursday at the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce Legislative Luncheon at Pheasant Run Resort. “ ‘But you work for a state that has no money, so what is it you actually do all day?’ “ Frerichs said he often is asked.

“I have to tell them, although our general revenue fund has problems – the general revenue fund is short of cash – we have over 700 different state funds that we manage for somewhere between $10 billion to $25 billion.”

The event also was hosted by the St. Charles Chamber’s Legislative Committee and the Batavia Chamber of Commerce Though interest rates are low, his office brings in $28 to the state government for every dollar it spends, Frerichs said, which adds up to “tens of millions of dollars.”

COVER STORY ADVOCATE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE Former St. Charles resident to fight child trafficking in Nepal

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Ever since Katie Hilborn was a child, she had always wanted to do something to change the world.

“As a little girl, I would just see the injustices on TV, and I knew it wasn’t right,” said Hilborn, a former St. Charles resident. “I wanted to help.”

After Hilborn graduated from St. Charles East High School in 2001 and completed her college studies in 2006, she began to travel the world.

Eventually, she formed the nonprofit organization that would become Global Orphan Prevention, which helps keep children with their mothers through social entrepreneurship and clean birthing centers.

Hilborn is currently raising money to make a late spring return to Nepal, a country located in south Asia between India and China. Hilborn has been to Nepal several times, including a safe schools mission in 2014 and also to help provide earthquake relief in 2015.

While she was in the country for earthquake relief, she found out that several police checkpoints had been compromised as a result of the natural disaster. This led to more child trafficking agents luring girls from their village and escaping from authorities, Hilborn said.

The trafficking agents target girls who don’t go to school, haven’t gone past fifth grade, or who create a conflict within their family. The agents promise them a job and better life in Katmandu, Nepal’s capital, Hilborn said.

“They take the girls to India and sell them to the brothels for prostitution. It’s really messed up; it’s heartbreaking,” Hilborn said.

To fight child trafficking, Hilborn wants to help the small mountain villages generate their own income. This

Although she knows her plan will be challenging, Hilborn said she has always followed through on her goals

“I’m a keen advocate for social justice,” Hilborn said.

Hilborn’s favorite teacher when she attended St. Charles East High School is current St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

As a student in one of Rogina’s classes, Hilborn said she learned how to conduct better research and fight for what she wants with tenacity.

Rogina said that Hilborn’s work validates his teaching style, which encourages students to support their arguments where there is not a

clear and final answer.

“In my area, I felt very fortunate to teach kids to really think,” Rogina said. “I’m happy she’s putting her skills to good use. I’m very proud of her.”

Hilborn’s parents, John and Susan, also are a wonderful influence on their daughter, St. Charles Township resident and family friend Cathy Koch said.

Koch said she still keeps in touch with Hilborn, who participated in a youth group Koch ran with her husband, Jaime, at St. Charles Episcopal Church.

Hilborn’s role as a humanitarian is a natural one for her because she has always tried to give back, Koch said.

“I’m in awe of her,” Koch said of Hilborn.

Firefighters investigate a fire Thursday at the Oak Terrace mobile home park in Batavia.

SUGAR GROVE – A lockdown situation, which took place Thursday morning at Kaneland Harter Middle School, ended before noon after officials stated that they were able to identify the student responsible for making a threat on social media.

Early Thursday morning, an email sent to parents, signed by Principal Brian Faulkner, stated that there had been a social media threat that the school’s administrative team became aware of during the morning.

In the email, Faulkner indicated that the message “was posted overnight and threatened the school and our students.”

“The message was reported to administration after the school day started,”

Faulkner’s email added.

“We immediately contacted the Sugar Grove Police Department to assist in our investigation.”

Kaneland Superintendent Todd Leden said the threat was made from a brand-new account created via Twitter.

He said it was not known whether the threat is related to a situation that took place earlier this month, in which there was an increased police presence at the school over a threat. The previous threat was deemed not credible.

A little after 11:30 a.m., officials issued a release that stated “the student that made the threat has been identified and is no longer a threat.”

The release thanked the Sugar Grove Police Department and the administration at Harter “for their assistance with the investigation and situation.”

BATAVIA – A dryer fire destroyed a mobile home Thursday at Oak Terrace Mobile Home Park in Batavia, fire officials said.

A 48-year-old man in the 0-100 block of Oak Terrace Court was treated on scene for smoke inhalation and a minor burn to his hand, according to a news release from Battalion Chief Shawn Stephens.

A firefighter suffered a minor facial injury from falling debris but was checked at the scene and did not seek further medical attention, according to the news release.

“The fire started in the dryer, and the resident tried to remove the clothing that was burning to the outside,” Stephens said. “He was not able to get it all. With heavy smoke conditions, he could not go back in.”

Stephens said the mobile home had two bedrooms and one person at home when it started just before noon.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze shortly after 2 p.m., he said.

The mobile home is uninhabitable and will be considered a total loss, but Stephens said he could not provide an

SYCAMORE – A judge could decide in March if convicted child murderer Jack McCullough will get another chance to prove his innocence.

McCullough entered a Sycamore courtroom Thursday for the first time since he was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for the murder of 7-yearold Maria Ridulph of Sycamore in 1957.

His conviction marked the end of the oldest cold case to be solved in U.S. history.

DeKalb County Judge William Brady presided over what attorneys called a case management hearing Thursday, where Brady set a deadline for DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack to file a response to McCullough’s petition.

In September, DeKalb County Judge Robert Pilmer dismissed McCullough’s request for post-conviction relief, calling it “frivolous and without merit,” according to court documents.

McCullough wrote the petition by hand from prison without help from a lawyer.

However, the 76-year-old ex-police officer filed a successive motion Dec. 11 in another attempt to make his case.

The case will reconvene March 2, when McCullough will be transported again from the Pontiac Correctional Center to the DeKalb County Courthouse for a review of Schmack’s response and a possible ruling.

Deep cleaning leads to good lovin’ Exhausted from the holidays?

I sure am. And not because of shopping, tree-trimming or Clark-Griswalding the house with lights. Rather, I’m beat due to the Deep Clean.

To give your house a lick-anda-promise for the holidays, all you needed was the threat of folks dropping by with white-frosted snowman cookies or a bottle of cab. You ran an electric broom over the front foyer and hid the dog tracks with a throwaway throw rug.

That worked until your wife, like mine, invited your family for Christmas.

“Excuse me.”

Huh? Who’s that?

“It’s Tia, your wife. I’m here to tell your readers the truth. I didn’t exactly ‘invite’ your family; it was our turn in the Christmas party rotation.”

Umm, right.

“Take me to Maui, and I’ll find an excuse not to have them.”

OK, OK. Anyway, with them coming, Tia went Deep Clean, her “enhanced in-terror-gation technique” employing Swiffer and Hoover so torturously as to make waterboarding look cheerful as an Evian commercial.

One day she said, “The garage needs sweeping,” and I naturally thought, “Why?” “I gave you the garage because everything else in the house I’d cleaned spotlessly.”

OK, OK. So even though believing this activity better suited for spring cleaning, I remembered a wise old man telling an after-dinner gathering of young husbands the answer to a happy marriage: “Shut up, and do what you’re told.”

With that in mind, I got to work. Given the stuff taking up floor space (lawnmower, rototiller, ice fishing sled, Shop-Vac, garbage bins, etc.), the actual sweep area looked minuscule. I even lifted the first of 13 stored screens to liberate crinkly fall leaves.

Later, washing dishes, I saw Tia go into the garage. When she didn’t immediately return, I figured she was admiring my Deep

After she came back in and said nothing, I assumed speechlessness at what her wunderkind husband could concoct with a broom. Finally, I asked, “How does it look?”

“You want the truth?”

No, of course not! “Sure.”

“You didn’t sweep down the center.”

Center? “What center?”

“The rest of the garage looks fine,” she allowed before driving home her point, “but if you’re going to do something, I think you should do it right.”

Exactly! You complain about people in your writers’ workshop not paying close enough attention to punctuation and formatting, which is the same thing as not paying attention to sweeping out the whole garage!

Hmm. She has a point. For guys like me, cleaning “right” means removing the largest crumbs and most obvious stains. That’s not the same “right” I expect when cleaning a manuscript of disingenuous commas, clumsy metaphors and stick-figure dialogue.

Ultimately, the Deep Clean had my family gushing about how lovely our house looked. No one toured the garage, but the sweptout center line appeared everywhere, in scrubbed cabinet doors, Windexed windows and scoured stovetop.

Deep Cleaning – it’s what puts the “deep” in deeply in love.

“Good last line, sweetie. Keep it.”

Paul Ryan says what few pols say

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post House Speaker Paul Ryan deservedly is receiving widespread praise for hosting and leading a discussion with six GOP presidential candidates on poverty.

In addition to the thoughtful discussion and even-keeled tone Ryan displayed at the event, he did what politicians virtually never do: He said he was wrong. On the day after the debate on “Face the Nation,” Ryan had this exchange: John Dickerson: “Let me ask you about the – the phrase, takers. You once referred to those who ... receive benefits as takers and you later apologized.”

Ryan: “Yes, I was wrong.”

“I was wrong.” He didn’t say, “I misspoke.”

He didn’t say, “I’m, sorry if you were offended,” the typical non-apology,

sometimes phrased as, “I’m sorry if you misunderstood.” Although he said he regretted not campaigning in poor areas in 2012 (the Romney campaign infamously nixed his request to do so), he did not blame his running mate for the tone he adopted in 2012. And he did not concoct some mumbo-jumbo like, “I evolved on the issue.”

Why is this important?

With good reason, a large percentage of voters consider pols to be liars and phonies. One reason is the language they use to obfuscate error and hide from responsibility.

Rather than accept blame and take their lumps, pols would rather play word games that only fuel media harping. (How could he have misspoke?

Moreover, Ryan is trying to make the case that Republicans and Democrats alike have

Republicans have argued a “rising tide” is all that is needed, while Democrats, as he says, defend a centralized bureaucracy in which inputs (how much money, how many programs, etc.) are the measure of compassion rather than the results (how many lifted out of poverty). “We want to help people get out of the fix they’re in and get on to a better life so that they can meet the potential and flourish,” he argues. “There will be differences in people’s lives, but that’s OK. That’s what – that’s what a free society has.”

If he is going to get both sides to set aside old nostrums, demonstrating some humility himself is a good way to begin.

NO PANIC FOR BULLDOGS Composure down stretch crucial

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – It started the same way for the Batavia boys basketball team. The Bulldogs were down early, trailed at halftime and was tied to begin the fourth quarter with St. Charles East Thursday night.

Oddly enough, that’s when this team feels most comfortable.

The Bulldogs made free throws down the stretch to hold off the Saints, 60-54, to remain perfect in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

Converting late free throws might be an understatement.

Until a Kamontez Thomas miss late in the fourth quarter, Batavia (10-6, 6-0 UEC River) made its first 16 free throws, and finished 16 for 17 in the final quarter and 20 for 21 from the line overall.

“We practice those every day,” Thomas said. “We have this free throw shooting ladder that we compete with throughout the season. That kind of keeps us motivated to shoot them well, and tonight it really helped the way we were able to knock them down.”

“Kamontez is definitely on top of that ladder,” said Batavia senior Canaan Coffey, who finished with a game-high 18 points. “They’re free throws, though. They’re free. They can prove so big in games like this and it was a big for us to knock them down and get the win tonight.”

With the win, the Bulldogs have built a two-game lead over three teams tied for second in the River Division. Geneva, Larkin and now East (88, 3-2) all sit in second, trailing Batavia.

Batavia coach Jim Nazos knows his team doesn’t tend to panic when it trails at any point during a game, showing that same result against the Saints.

“It seems to always play out that way,” Nazos said.

“We have a team here that

just continues to stick with it.

I feel like as the game goes on, we get better on both ends of the floor. East is very hard to guard, inside and out. It was a another great win against a great team.

“This group just believes in each other. They respect everyone in this conference but don’t fear anyone at the same time. One of those groups. …

Fearless, defend hard and just different guys stepping up at different times.”

Colin Cheaney helped relieve some of the constant

pressure Coffey saw on the offensive end. The junior guard came off the bench to provide 13 points – matching Thomas’ total on the night – knocking down a couple important 3-point shots.

With some of the strong offensive nights that Coffey has had of late, going up against most opponents’ best defender, the senior knows how important it is for his team to have multiple teammates score.

“We have so many guys that can score the ball,” Cof-

fey said. “I don’t shy away from that pressure because it opens up lanes for everyone else on the team. We have a bunch of guys that can shoot, but also put the ball on the floor. I think teams sometimes overlook the amount of guys we have that can do that.”

As much as Batavia liked its position to start the fourth, East coach Pat Woods likely felt the same way. Sure, after leading after each of the first two quarters, he would have liked to have the advantage again, but to be even with the first place team in the division, he couldn’t ask for much more.

Woods said there were a few plays that stuck out to him, one critical one being a chance to tie the game midway through the fourth quarter. But the Saints failed to convert on three offensive rebounds and putbacks on the same possession.

“That was a big play to me in this one,” Woods said.

“We made a couple of poor decisions and still didn’t really shoot all that well. It’s a few plays here and there and against a team like Batavia that is hot right now, that’s going to hurt you. We did play very hard and it’s definitely not a loss because of a lack of effort tonight.”

A bright spot for the Saints was junior forward Justin Hardy, who after sustaining a concussion during East’s Thanksgiving tournament, has really come on strong.

Hardy finished with a teamhigh 17 points and also led the team with 10 rebounds. Evan DiLeonardi (12 points) and Zach Mitchell (11) joined Hardy in double figures for East.

Chad Reynolds secured North’s first win, earning a technical fall against Alex Calderon with five seconds remaining in their bout at 152.

Recently returned from a shoulder injury he suffered during a season-opening tournament at Conant, Reynolds acknowledged he still had plenty of room for improvement.

“So far, I’ve made a full recovery,” Reynolds said. “The strength is still a little bit weary, though, so obviously I have to make up for that.”

Hummel has worked to energize and grow the program since coming to North for the 2013-14 school year.

The resolve of such regular contributors as Reynolds helps younger wrestlers identify with the perseverance the sport requires.

“We’re really close,” Chantos said. “Practices are always fun. Practices are hard, but when you’re doing them with people that you’re close with, it makes it a lot better.”

North forfeited bouts at three weight classes, while the Royals forfeited one.

Hummel said he regularly has been fielding wrestlers in 11 of 14 matches in conference duals. That’s a boost from past seasons.

“We’re asking guys to step up, and they’re doing it,” Hummel said. “So you can’t complain.”

ST. CHARLES – Jake Chantos and David Washington wrestled the final home bouts of their St. Charles North careers Thursday.

While reflection ultimately won the day despite the result – Larkin 39, North 30 – the senior duo still found time to grin about the program’s future.

“I’m really cool with Washington,” Chantos said.

“We’re doing the best we can to be leaders of the team and get these freshmen knowing what the program is about.”

High school newcomers aren’t the only fresh faces in the North Stars’ mat room.

Third-year coach Ben Hummel also welcomed a handful of first-time wrestlers to the varsity lineup, including sophomore Jake Thomason at 120 pounds and junior Spencer Binning at 195.

On Thursday, North split 10 contested bouts against its Upstate Eight Conference River Division counterparts, including victories in three of the last four matches.

Alex Baran (113) and Drew Schmitt (132) both won by fall before Dominic Testa closed the dual with a major decision at 138.

“We wrestled hard, and I was happy no one gave up a pin, you know,” Hummel said. “I talked to the guys before the match about whatever the result, I wanted to see them fight the whole match for six minutes. Every single guy did that.”

Chantos, competing up one weight class at 170 to help North field a more full lineup, edged the Royals’ Hector Perez, 8-6, in the fourth bout of the night.

His victory gave the North Stars a temporary, 8-7 edge in team points after Chantos sprawled to repel Perez’s final attempts at a potential tying takedown.

In between the repeated shriek of whistles, the St. Francis girls basketball team found enough ways to score at the free throw line by attacking the basket and connecting from long-range to escape Rosary, albeit bruised, with a 55-38 victory in Girls Catholic Athletic Conference play.

“We constantly stress positive energy,” Spartans coach Melissa Taylor said.

“The five on the floor and the bench all feed off each other, so it’s key for them to constantly be contributing to the team.”

The teams combined for 25 first-half fouls, and if there was any hope that the second half would be less physical that was thrown out the gym

just eight seconds into the third quarter when St. Francis sophomore Antwainette Walker was tackled during an intentional foul.

“I think we played really aggressive and we wanted to come out strong in the second half after a good second quarter,” Walker said. “We really took off after I got clobbered at the beginning there.”

The Spartans (11-6, 5-2) used a 21-point second quarter to take a 33-19 lead at halftime.

The Royals (8-11, 2-4) clawed back to within 43-29 to close out the third quarter, but Walker sparked an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter.

After retreating to the bench after picking up her fourth foul not even midway through the third quarter, Walker appeared well rested and ready to go when she returned. She scored on a drive as well as 15-foot jumper to

“Our team really held them back,” Walker said. “I felt excited to have the opportunity to get back out there and I had couple chances to shoot the ball and I did that while being careful not to get that fifth foul.”

Rosary scored more points from the free throw line (20) then from the field (18) while committing 23 turnovers. The Royals didn’t make a single three-pointer.

“They hit big shots and finished the shots that they needed,” Rosary coach Don Rasich

said. “We stopped the run that one time and their second quarter hurt us. It just seemed like they got every loose ball and we didn’t handle their up-tempo defense, but that’s a quality team over there and we’re young and looking for leadership.”

The game featured two, injury-related officials timeouts, 46 fouls and 58 free throws. In fact, 16 different players spent time at the charity stripe.

Mia Mazza led the Spartans with 14 points while Walker added 12.

the turnaround. Apart from the Saints’ five-match winning streak that erased an early Batavia advantage, that is.

“We talked a lot about the importance of bonus points,” Potter said. “Are we going to get them, and are we going to not give them up?”

Saints heavyweight Max Schumann’s victory also went a long way toward the end result. Trailing in the third period, he rallied to secure a fall.

“They’re a great team, and it’s tough wrestling them, especially for something this big,” Schumann said. “It was a great opportunity. Once we had the momentum, it just helps with other wrestlers going into their match.”

“They limited all of our big guns to as little as they possibly could,” Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer said. “They shut us down there. … They seized the moment, we didn’t. But something to learn from.”

“We’ve had a lot of alumni come back,” Bayer said. “We’ve got a lot of interest by the alumni. … A lot of those things are going well for us in terms of marketing the program.”

Masonic Lodge concludes Socks for Souls effort KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com Geneva Masonic Lodge No. 139 has concluded its Socks for Souls 2015 Campaign by donating more than 400 pairs of socks to Lazarus House, a homeless shelter in St. Charles.

The Socks for Souls campaign was started by Worshipful Master Brian Marra to help clothe homeless in the area, states a news release.

“The goal of 160 pairs of

socks was set to match the lodge’s 160-year anniversary this past November,” states the release. “Having more than doubled that goal was a great achievement. Heartfelt thanks go out to the brethren of St. Charles Unity Masonic Lodge No. 48 for a donation of 160 pairs of socks!”

Geneva Masonic Lodge, located at 10 S. Second St. in Geneva, has been “Making Good Men Better since 1852” – states the release, noting that Freemasonry is perhaps the

oldest fraternity still active today.

It was publicly organized in 1717 with the formation of the Grand Lodge of England and based upon traditions at least as old as the late 14th century, the release states.

20 Interval training allows more intense exercise in less time Dear Dr. K: What is interval training? What are the benefits of exercising this way?

Dear Reader: Interval training simply means alternating between short bursts of intense exercise and brief periods of rest (or a less-intense activity).

The payoff is improved cardiovascular fitness with shorter workouts.

Aerobic activities, such as walking, biking, running and swimming, make the heart and lungs work harder, which increases cardiovascular endurance. They also help burn calories and pare down unwanted fat. Aerobic activity is an important part of any well-rounded exercise program.

“High intensity” basically means exercising at an intensity you could not sustain for more than five to 10 minutes before becoming exhausted. In interval training, you do high-intensity exercise for a minute or so, then rest and repeat.

I spoke to Howard Knuttgen, research associate in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.

He said the seesaw relationship between exercise intensity and duration is what makes interval training work.

Here are a few examples of what interval training would look like in practice: • Swimming: Swim one lap as fast as you can. Rest for about the same time as it took you to swim the lap. Repeat.

• Walking: Walk as fast as you can for a minute or two. Then walk at a leisurely pace for the same period. Repeat.

• Gym machines: Treadmills, elliptical trainers and stationary cycles often have a built-in interval training function to put you through your paces.

As fitness improves, you should feel better, with greater endurance.

But no matter what type of cardiovascular training you choose, you need to do it regularly to see improvement.

If you’re otherwise healthy, interval training shouldn’t present major risks, as long as you start gradually. If a person’s heart has normal blood flow, interval training carries minimal risk, and helps keep the heart healthy.

On the other hand, if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or other risk factors for heart disease, talk to your doctor before starting interval training.

The possible risk is this: First, a brief period of intense physical work will cause the heart to work very hard. If heart disease has slowed the supply of blood to part of the heart, that part of the heart may not get the blood it needs to do the work. That, in turn, could start a dangerously irregular heart rhythm, one that could lead to cardiac arrest.

You can reduce the risk of straining a muscle or joint by starting with a gentle warm-up before your workout to loosen your joints and get your blood flowing. Be prepared to “feel the burn” after your challenging new workouts. It’s normal to feel sore for a day or two as your muscles recover.

A day of rest between workouts also is a good idea.

Suspension of allowance helps teen learn financial responsibility Dr. Wallace: I read the letter from the young lady who was upset her parents suspended her allowance after she got a part-time job. After reading the responses from parents over your advice, I had to voice my opinion.

I completely disagree with you and heartily agree with those parents who say allowances should stop once the teen starts earning money. I, too, had my allowance suspended after I got my first part-time job a year ago. I had been getting $20 a week from my parents (though some thought that excessive, I paid for all my own clothes, shoes, gasoline and toiletries), but when I got my job, my father decided to do away with my allowance.

Instead of giving me an allowance, he opened a Roth IRA in my name for $2,000.

I’m now 18 and have complete control over my future.

I know my retirement years are set from the money my father gave me, and I am saving another $2,000 to put into the IRA next year. I still pay for all my own necessities and

Dr. Wallace: Please settle our family debate. What is the leading cause of death for teens? My parents think it is death by misuse of illegal drugs. I say it’s suicide.

Who’s right? – Nameless, Brunswick, Georgia Nameless: According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the leading cause of death for teens is motor vehicle crashes. Suicide is in second place.

One would think that teens have too much to live for to commit suicide, but this age group has the second-highest percentage of suicides, exceeded only by those who are between the ages of 60 and 70.

That is a common form of humor: two apparently disconnected phrases do relate unexpectedly. But in this deal, “10” is key.

When in four of a major, ask yourself what 10 tricks you plan to win. For example, in this deal from the 2015 European Open Championships in Tromso, Norway, how would you play in four hearts after West leads a trump?

One declarer had lost one diamond and three clubs, and no doubt grumbled that he was unlucky. It is true that he was, but he did not need to be unlucky – he should have had his eye on one spade, four hearts, three diamonds and two spade ruffs in the dummy.

Declarer wins the first trick with his heart eight, cashes the spade ace, ruffs a spade in the dummy, and plays a diamond to his queen, which West ducks, realizing that winning the trick cannot defeat the contract.

South ruffs the spade queen, draws trumps, and continues diamonds. West takes the third round, apparently cutting declarer off from the last diamond, and leads his final spade. South ruffs and must broach the clubs.

Here, he must lead either the jack or king.

West takes the trick, but has to return a club, letting South’s king or jack be his 10th trick. If, instead, South exits with a low club, he will lose three club tricks.

Probably it is best to lead the king. One indication is West’s opening trump lead, which suggests dangerous holdings in the other suits, especially the minors.
