Batavia students help causes abroad

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia High School freshmen are learning about and helping causes across the world as part of a project in their English classes. The global issues project, known as Campaign for Change, begins while the freshmen read “A Long Way Gone,� Ishmael Beah’s account of life as a child soldier in Africa.

Every Batavia freshman is required to research a group or cause outside of the United States, make contact with the appropriate officials and find a way to raise awareness or help them, English teacher Jerad Beckler said.

Since the 2014-15 school year, teams of students have completed about 200 projects, raised a few thousand dollars and donated various supplies, Beckler said.

Beckler and fellow educator Ashley Lagesse originally chose to feature “A Long Way Gone,� then the project curriculum was assembled with teachers Emily Seyller, Haley Nickolaou and Amy Fredrick. “We wanted to do something interactive, and we wanted students to think big,�

Beckler said.

The students’ projects so far have featured something on every continent. Topics have included animal poaching, human trafficking and sweatshops.

When Fleury and Leatherman discovered that shipping school supplies to Haiti would be costly, they decided to raise money instead.

The girls found two businesses – Batavia Creamery and Honey Jam CafÊ – willing to let them stand outside during the weekend after Thanksgiving and ask for

donations. They raised more than $130 in four hours with the help of their families. “I thought it was inspiring,� Leatherman said of the project. “Here, we have everything that we need, but not everyone has what we do.�

Freshman Aleigh Nelson, 14, also decided to research Haiti for her project due in part to her family’s volunteer work there. Nelson, and her mother, Amy Nelson the district’s community outreach

coordinator, traveled to Haiti over winter break through Christ Community Church in St. Charles.

Amy Nelson said she was glad her daughter was able to experience life in Haiti and study the country for her class. “I think it’s a great project for kids in high school to have,� Amy Nelson said. “There’s such a need internationally and such a need locally.�

Special Hickory Knolls events enliven winter months

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Whether it hangs on the wall by your phone or, most likely, is actually on your phone, it’s time to mark your calendars for three hot events designed to brighten these cold winter days.

Every month from January through March, Hickory Knolls Discovery Center will host a one-day special program that will showcase cool things to do at a time when most of nature is hunkering down and hibernating.

The special events season kicks off Jan. 30, with the second annual Cardboard Sled Race. Save those corrugated boxes; dig out the duct tape; and let your engineering and creative spirits soar, as families and friends design a cardboard sled strong, sleek and sassy enough to stand up to the slopes at Timber Trails Park. The fast and furious fun begins at noon with a preview of the competitive lineup.

St. Charles boy lands his own Field Museum display

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – If there’s one thing 9-year-old Dominic Muscari is known for, it could very well be his skill at turning sheets of paper into three-dimensional works of art with a series of folds.

The St. Charles Township boy has given his origami creations to flight crews and restaurant employees and has even folded money into various designs to give as tips, said his parents, Matt and Contrell Muscari.

His passion for the Japanese art recently led him to his own display at the Field Museum in Chicago.

“It’s pretty cool the Muscari name gets to be in a museum,” Matt Muscari said.

Dominic’s origami is in the Crown Family PlayLab, a play area geared for ages 2 to 6 that offers a program through which children can have their collections displayed, said Aimee Davis, the museum’s volunteer and public learning experiences administrator.

She said the program, which asks applicants about their collection’s history and meaning, shows children how items can go together with a theme and that pieces in the museum are not displayed at random.

“It’s a collection just like all our collections in the museum,” Davis said.

Dominic’s display is unique because it features items he made, she said. Other children’s collections have featured Snoopy, My Little Pony, keychains and, she said, feathers and sticks two sisters collected during hikes.

GENEVA – The city stands to have the remaining $4 million debt for its Prairie Green Preserve paid off through the sale of wetland credits, officials said.

By a vote of 9-1 this week, aldermen acting as the Committee of the Whole recommended a contract with Land and Water Resources of Rosemont to rehabilitate the site.

Second Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg voted against it.

The contract would not cost Geneva anything. Once proper hydrology and plantings are restored, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to allow the sale of wetland credits – a system of debits and credits that would allow development while preserving wetlands, said John Ryan, president of Land and Water Resources.

He said his company would be investing about $50,000 into restoring proper hydrology and plantings.

“Anyone impacting a wetland is going to need a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers or from the county,” Ryan said. “You lose an acre of wetland, you need to replace it with an acre.”

The “replacement” comes by allowing developers to buy credits from a wetland bank, Ryan said.

Wetland credits are allowed under a section of the Federal

Clean Water Act. Ryan said his company has done 31 wetland bank projects with 100 percent success.

“You want to hit your economic profit goal,” 1st Ward Alderman Tom Simonian said.

“Ours is $4 million. What is yours?”

“The rest,” Ryan said.

Ryan said he did not want to disclose what he would anticipate as his profit on the sale of Prairie Green wetland credits, but he said that Geneva would receive what it needs to pay off its bond.

Mayor Kevin Burns said voters approved a $10 million bond issue in 1997 for Prairie Green, a 580-acre open space site west of Peck Road and north of Keslinger Road.

Burns said the council would take final action on the contract Tuesday.

Prairie Green has 80 acres of wetland and 300 acres actively being farmed, officials said.

City Administrator Mary McKittrick said the city needs the wetland credits in order to get funding to retire the debt.

“When the city acquired the property ... there wasn’t a plan as to how to pay the bonds off, except for selling wetland credits,” McKittrick said.

“The problem is that the city is not in the business of wetlands, parks or open space. We do streets and infrastructure. … We had no staff with expertise in it.”

My name is Pam Leffler, and I have just celebrated my two-year anniversary as the director of the St. Charles Public Library District. Up in the air Why do I feel like I always write these columns in different types of vehicles? To my left sits my brother; in front of me is a stranger; and to the right of me are tiny lights.

It is fairly dark in here, and I feel weightless, like I am flying.

This is because I am some 30,000 feet in the air on an airplane, headed to Orlando, Florida, at the precise moment I am writing this. I imagine that I am somewhere above Kentucky at this point.

Personally, I believe there is something so stunning and magical about flying.

That is, once you get past all the security-checking in the airport. It is such a pain to awkwardly wait in a quiet, long line with a suitcase in one hand and a license and boarding ticket in another. You simply glide forward inch by inch until you reach a person who signs your plane ticket and lets you continue onward in your journey.

Do not even get me started on the next checkpoint, where you have to take off your jacket and shoes and put them into bins.

Walking through a body scanner is probably the best part of the whole airplane experience.

Although, after all the airport craziness, the rest of the flying trip is a breeze. Well, besides lining up to board the plane; it always seems like a scramble to find your spot in line. Once you are on the plane and in the air, it is so peaceful flying at night. I can just look outside the airplane window and see thousands of twinkly lights from houses, buildings and cars. What I love best is that I can wear

Nonetheless, what I enjoy most about this current airplane that I am on is the free snacks. A bag of peanuts and a cracker and pretzel snack mix, and a drink, wow! Can you guess what airline I am taking?

Airplanes are interesting; you pack about 200 passengers into a long flying vehicle, each who have different reasons as to why they are on a particular flight. They could be headed home, on a connecting flight, or perhaps they could be visiting a family member or going on honeymoon trip. It’s magical how these planes take all sorts of individuals to the same place for a hundred different reasons.

This is a first, writing a column on an airplane.

It is probably one of the most unique and once-ina-lifetime places that I’ll ever write a column. I still have about an hour left in my flight until I land in Orlando for a family vacation, but I believe it will go by fast; these flights always do.

A look at Rauner’s first year When Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner was sworn into office one year ago, he said: “Each person here today and all those throughout the state will be called upon to share in the sacrifice so that one day we can again share in Illinois’ prosperity. We all must shake up our old ways of thinking.”

There was sacrifice in Rauner’s first year as governor, but it did not come from cutbacks and austerity – rather, from things breaking down. It was a year in which Rauner proved adept at disrupting the workings of state government, but not in working with the majority Democrats to pass meaningful legislation that would change the state’s direction.

Is our state better off one year into Rauner’s first term than when he took office?

The answer is debatable and largely depends on how easy or difficult you expected it would be for Rauner to accomplish his goals. The hope is that through continued commitment to the reforms Rauner is pushing for, it will be.

Rauner, a Republican, promised to shake things up in Springfield. No more status quo. He was going to run Illinois like a business and turn around our state, which was – still is – dealing with unprecedented financial difficulties.

Year One for Rauner will be remembered for operating half the year without a state budget, which has led to increased spending through court orders and piecemeal funding, and a lot of pain for the state’s social service agencies, some of which have closed doors they say will not be reopened.

The impasse continues into Year Two. Democratic leadership in Springfield, namely House Speaker Mike Madigan, passed a fiscal 2016 budget with a $4 billion deficit between expenses and revenue. Status quo in Illinois.

Rauner rejected the budget and the status quo, which he was elected to do.

Neither side has budged since then. Democrats want a combination of cuts and a tax increase to settle the budget

deficit. Rauner is open to increasing taxes if he gets his suggested reforms, saying he won’t “put in a significant new tax and change nothing.”

Those reforms deal with reducing the cost of doing business in Illinois, limiting the power of unions and establishing term limits for lawmakers.

If Rauner was to be graded for his first year in office, he’d get an incomplete because of the budget impasse and growing pension liability. He touts among his first-year accomplishments record funding for education, eliminating a $1.6 billion deficit inherited from the previous administration for the last fiscal year, agreeing to new collective bargaining agreements with most state government unions that included merit pay for the most productive employees and landmark public safety legislation.

In his first year, Rauner has made good on his promise to shake things up. In his second, he needs to show he also can work with the Legislature to create a new order that works for the people of Illinois.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The importance of inner beauty Former St. Charles resident writes ‘Mabel’s Meadow’

Formerly of St. Charles – spending the first 17 years of her life living there – Raudabaugh is now a first-grade teacher at Canterbury Elementary School in Crystal Lake School District 47 and has used much of her teaching and real-life experience for her first published book, “Mabel’s Meadow.”

The book is available on the Amazon and Barnes and Nobles’ websites, and was recently added to the shelves at Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville for $10.95. Raudabaugh will also be holding an author signing with the book at 1 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 7, at Anderson’s Bookshop, located at 123 W. Jefferson Ave. Also a mother to a 4-year-old daughter, Raudabaugh used experiences from parenthood – as well as from teaching younger students – to help develop the overall theme of inner beauty being more important than outer beauty in her book.

Raudabaugh could not be happier with the children’s story, which features a caterpillar named Mabel going through her own personal journey of realizing that there is more to life than what meets the eye through number of animals she meets.

Throughout the story, a number of themes are presented, which Raudabaugh caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to discuss.

Chris Casey: Tell me your main reasons for writing this book.

Lauren Raudabaugh: There are a few reasons, but I feel like being a teacher gives me a platform to get a certain message out to children. I used real-life experience to inspire the story, and it really teaches several themes throughout, with the main umbrella theme of inner beauty

being more important than outer beauty.

Casey: Why do you think this story appeals to children of a young age?

Raudabaugh: I found that through my teaching experience, children are more likely to pay attention to a story that teaches them a lesson or has a profound message. My main hope with the book would be that the children could identify with the choices that are made and some of the lessons learned in the book to help them make good choices.

Casey: So, tell me about Mabel’s journey, in particular.

Raudabaugh: Mabel is the name of the

main character, and she is a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly at the end. She doesn’t think she is very beautiful as a caterpillar, but she’s a very generous and giving animal. She goes on her own personal journey, spreading that umbrella theme message to a bunch of different animals. The first lesson is on bullying and respect; the second is about listening skills, taken from my daughter; and the last one kind of brings everything full circle back to inner beauty. All while teaching these lessons, Mabel is trying to learn these lessons and live them out herself.

Casey: How long did it take you to write and get this published?

Raudabaugh: I wrote the story in April in eight hours. It came to me quickly and organically. I collaborated with my cousin, Sarah Ehlers [a student at DuPage College]. She has always been a gifted artist, so I asked her if I wrote a children’s book, if she would do the illustrations. She said yes, and I told her I had already written one. My aunt got me

in touch with Archway Publishing, and eventually to Simon & Schuster. They walked me through the process, and we’ve had a great partnership throughout this whole process.

Casey: Are there more books to come?

Raudabaugh: I actually envisioned this becoming a series of books. Hopefully “Mabel’s Meadow” is just the beginning.

I imagined Mabel being a butterfly and continuing to spread her message. I would then think of more creatures and themes to spread in each of the upcoming books.

Making a meal of it at McAlister’s Deli in Geneva Hot soup tends to warm the body on a cold winter’s day.

And that was the case during a recent – and memorable, for more reasons than one – lunch outing at McAlister’s Deli, which opened at 1492 Randall Road in Geneva last year.

I had never heard of McAlister’s Deli until it was announced that a location would be opening in Geneva. But the restaurant has been spreading its name, as the McAlister’s brand has over 350 restaurants in 26 states, according to www.mcalistersdeli.com.

“Founded in 1989, McAlister’s Deli is a fast casual restaurant chain known for our sandwiches, spuds, soups, salads, desserts and McAlister’s Famous Sweet Tea,” states the site. “In addition to dine-in and take-out service, we also offer catering with a selection of sandwich trays, box lunches, desserts, a hot spud bar and more.”

With temps in the low double digits during this recent lunch outing, my friend and I hustled into McAlister’s to place our order at the front counter.

ture place to stop for a quick meal. But I will never forget my first visit to the restaurant, as the fire alarm went off and stayed on for quite some time.

The staff handled the incident well, keeping up communication with customers. Plus, we got a coupon for a free cookie. And that’s not a bad way to end a meal in my book.

Cardinal Rule, Royal Plum Wine and a memorable boat ride In our pursuit of small, premium wineries in California, we discovered Cardinal Rule. The owner, Stephen Scharf, is an attorney who has built a new home in the middle of one of the vineyards in Sonoma. He’s also eager to sell wines in Hong Kong and China, where his law firm has offices. We, of course, teased him about just trying to impress his overseas partners.

Cardinal Rule is a small brand (about 3,000 cases in total each vintage) in Sonoma, named after the Stanford Cardinals football team, where Stephen graduated from law school. There are only three varietals, and all are exceptionally good reds that are generally more popular in

During our last trip, John and I spent a day exploring HK. One of the more interesting adventures John was a trip on White a tour boat in the harbor. The boat was very small (eight tourists total) and dilapidated.

But, it was a family business – the husband operated a tiny outboard motor; the wife steered; and their son pointed out different sights while we sputtered around the harbor.

During the hour-long harbor tour, we saw many different types of fishing boats. Some were huge ocean-going vessels, while oth-

ers were small, family-owned boats. They all had fishing nets, but the small ones were equipped with outside grills and tied together to make a floating community. Parents cooked, prepared for the next voyage, and the kids swam and chased each other from one boat to the next.

One of our last meetings before returning to the U.S. was with Tomy Fong in HK. He was keen to show us his new Royal Plum Wine made locally in HK. It’s a clear white wine in a nifty looking bottle with a slight sweetness. It would appeal to drinkers as a dessert wine or with spicy Thai food (it mutes the spiciness).

We also suggested to Tomy that his plum wine would mix

well with club soda and ice – making a very refreshing summertime beverage. After further discussions with Tomy about prices and logistics, we decided to approach our friends and associates back in the states to determine if the wine would have merit.

And, after much investigation and experimenting (my favorite part), we’ll likely be talking with Tomy again soon.

Batavia officials optimistic about turf, track plan

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com The booster club at Batavia High School is something a number of people associated with athletics are proud of.

With all of the effort that it has given back to the school, athletic director Dave Andrews, head football coach Dennis Piron and the entire athletic department thought of a way to not only show support for the booster club, but also to raise money for its own artificial turf project.

There is potential – though not a guarantee – that bids to bring artificial turf and a new outdoor track to Batavia could be items of action at the Jan. 26 District 101 school board meeting, which also could bring a vote to move forward with the bids.

To raise money and show the booster club support, the athletic department will host Tee Off for Turf – the first-ever event Batavia has put on with a single focus in the title – at Topgolf Naperville from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

“We were looking for an opportunity in the wintertime to do something to show our support toward the booster club,” Piron said. “They work so hard and have been very generous in supporting our facility expansion and the fundraiser has really taken off. We have been blown away and are very excited for Saturday.”

“There are so many families that spend an enormous amount of time raising money for us,” Andrews said. “Some people don’t even have kids, but are graduates. We wanted to do something for them. With all the events that they put on, they never get to fully enjoy themselves because they’re the ones working. We wanted to do this to invite all booster club members to participate, but not have to do a single thing.”

Although booster club members will not have any responsibility other than to enjoy their Saturday, Andrews confirmed the group has $200,000 set aside

Through projected earnings, the booster club could end up contributing as much as $500,000 toward the project, which is estimated to cost $1.5 million between the turf installation and track resurfacing.

Though the $400,000 track installation will happen no matter what – having already received district approval – Andrews said it made the most sense to couple the projects together to save money.

“The reason we put out a bid for the track was to get the best price,” Andrews said.

“You’re not going to bring a

construction company in to do the track, have them leave and come back to do the field. If you think about it, it makes sense to do everything at once. The school board was very prudent on doing it that way because it will save money.”

Batavia will not know the exact project cost until the bids get revealed Friday.

A district wide referendum that included a turf field was voted down in November 2014.

The turf field carried an expected $1.5 million cost. The district wanted to issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund it and other capital improvement projects.

To raise additional funds, there also are a number of levels of sponsorship at Saturday’s fundraiser, aside from the cost per individual or group.

The four levels begin with a bay sponsorship, equivalent to a hole sponsor at a golf outing that provides the sponsor with its name on a specific Topgolf bay at Topgolf. Money from an Award sponsorship goes toward buying awards for the event’s winners. Event sponsorships receive premier billing in a marketing capacity, while the “Top Dog” sponsorship is reserved for one sponsor for exclusive naming

rights for the event and will be unveiled Saturday.

Andrews said the sponsorships are continuing to come in, but estimated there were somewhere between 35 and 40 sponsorships in place as of Wednesday evening. Andrews credited the work of many of the athletes and coaches, as each of the 20 athletic programs was “given a challenge” to form at least one team of six golfers and one sponsorship to represent their group.

With an expected strong turnout and continued support from the community, Andrews said it’s hard to not be slightly optimistic about what the future could hold. However it turns out, he’s glad the school district has the best interests of the student-athletes in mind.

“I’m excited about the opportunities that the school board has committed up to this point,” Andrews said. “They understand the needs of our student-athletes, and I think that’s what I’m most excited about. I’m just happy we are even at the point where we are having a conversation about it.

Whether it gets done now, or they decide to wait a bit, I’m happy they have in mind what is best for our students and that’s very important to me.”

Nicholas Leonard finds himself in the right place at the right time at St. Charles East.

Leonard, the new boys coach for the Saints, recently moved into the area to pursue his doctorate in art and design education from Northern Illinois.

“I was coming from Michigan and saw that there was an opening for a high school coach,” he said. “I reached out to Mike Sommerfeld, the athletic director there, and after a few meetings and discussions about team goals and ambitions, as well as some paperwork, I became the new head coach.”

Leonard grew up in New Jersey and began playing lacrosse in sixth grade. After successful high school and college careers, he played for the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Dragonfish, a semipro box lacrosse team.

His coaching background includes stints with the Holland Warriors Lacrosse Club and Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

“I have always had a passion for teaching and lacrosse,” Leonard said. “I have always loved the sport for both its physical, aggressive and fast play, as well as the team building, technical detail and finesse also involved.”

Based on East’s 2015 roster, most players are eligible to return, including 15 seniors.

Captains Jack Russell, Evan Anderson and Mitch Van Sickle project among the leading returnees.

“I’ve heard from a lot of different sources that there’s a lot of players out there and a lot of excitement,” Leonard said.

“We haven’t had any practices, but I am expecting a large turnout and for it to be very competitive.”

Effort will be a huge focal point for Leonard’s teams.

“I want to make sure that there are no assumptions with the players, that it’s a given to get positions,” he said. “I focus on effort. I want everyone to apply themselves and effort-based performance is going to be a big thing for me. Skills can always be developed, but effort comes internally, and it’s something I really value in my players.”

For years, Leonard has attended coaching clinics at No-

tre Dame, while also reaching out to coaches, trainers and others at colleges to help structure his program, from tryouts to offseason training, film analysis and practices.

“If they continue to play beyond high school, they’re going to know what to expect at the next level,” he said. “I like being efficient and I like working with the best so that (these kids) can be the best they can be.”

A Cadet returns: Michael Clark wanted to give back to his alma mater, so he’s coming back to Marmion this spring.

The 2012 graduate, who currently is a student at Benedictine, will be an assistant coach for the JV squad.

“I love that place,” Clark said. “Career-wise, I want to join the FBI, but I wanted to come back and help Marmion lacrosse. It was a big part of my life, so I felt I could give back to it.”

Angelo Carbonara, a 2013 graduate, also is returning as the new head coach for the JV team. He served as a varsity assistant at Neuqua Valley last year.

“I love the sport and I love Marmion, so I’m happy to be able to give back,” Carbonara said. “I’m not positive about our numbers, but we’ve been conditioning and the turnout has been good, so we’re excited about our potential.”

The two will undoubtedly be involved in the program’s Feed My Starving Children function on Feb. 24. Approximately 75 players, coaches and parents will pack more than 100 boxes of food.

Knights head Upstate: Welcome to the Upstate Eight, Kaneland. The Knights will debut their program this spring with a JV squad competing in the Upstate Eight Conference.

“I’m in the process of confirming all the games and dates with everybody right now,” said Anne Shaw, co-founder of the Kaneland Lacrosse Club.

“We’ve got 14 games this year, we have 21 boys that are registered to play who are between freshmen and juniors, and our uniforms have been ordered, so we’re all very excited.”

The Knights will be cocoached by Wesley Williams and Tucker Cunningham, who both played lacrosse while serving in the military.

Noverini back on mat Tim Noverini is back on the mat.

The former St. Charles North wrestler is competing again after taking a year off from the sport he loves. After two years at Coe College in Iowa and a year away spent coaching, Noverini is suiting up for Elmhurst College and back at it “full blast” after spending much of the Tim Noverini first semester training.

The change of scenery has done him well. He’s happy to be back around family and friends, and he said the transition to being a member of the Bluejays has been terrific, allowing him to recapture his love for the sport.

“Coming to Elmhurst, I think it really helped me realize why I got back into wrestling in the first place,” Noverini said. “It helped me just start to really enjoy the sport again.

“I think a big part is the team. We’re very competitive, but we always make sure we’re doing the sport for the right reason. It’s not as much of a chore anymore. They’ve really lit a fire under me and helped me get back to taking care of business but also having a good time doing it.”

Aside from his teammates, Noverini said that a big part of what’s made wrestling fun again has been the style of training, one that’s working for him and getting him excited to compete for the NCAA Division III program.

“From a wrestling standpoint, it’s different. Pretty big difference in training from where I was before,” he said. “I think the training I’m going through now, it’s pretty good for me. Instead of beating on my body and really killing myself ... I think we train pretty smart. I’m not saying that we didn’t train smart at the other place I was, but I think this way definitely works better for my style and my mentality.”

After two years at Coe,

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber Noverini spent last season as a coach at Lake Park. He enjoyed it, and he’s planning on going back into coaching once his college days are over. But a phone call from Elmhurst head coach Steve Marinetti had Noverini changing course once again and going back to college to compete.

“I knew I wanted to coach, and I thought that was perfect for me. So I took last year off to coach and be around wrestling and figure some things out and just work,” Noverini said. “And then I got a call from Marinetti one day talking to me about maybe wanting to get back into it and come wrestle for him at Elmhurst. I just couldn’t say no.”

Being back near home has allowed a connection to the old days, too, as Noverini meets with some of his former coaches whenever he needs advice.

“Instead of over the phone I can meet with them,” Noverini said. “Not to take anything away from my coaches now, they’re great coaches, but sometimes it’s nice to get some of that old mentality back.”

“I’m extremely excited, I’m ecstatic,” he added. “I took a whole year off where I was just coaching. I think that really made me hungry again to get back out there and compete. It’s been a little over a year since I’ve been able to compete hard and train just for me instead of just being a coach and sitting on the sidelines and then even that first semester having to sit on the sidelines a little bit. It’s definitely just a very exciting time.”

‘Meet the Diamondbacks’ event set for Jan. 29

GENEVA – The Cougars will welcome their 2016 field staff and organizational brass when the club hosts a “Meet the Diamondbacks” hot stove event at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Jan. 29.

The Steel can dare to look out their proverbial passenger’s side window.

Friday’s game at Madison (Wisconsin) and Saturday’s trip to Cedar Rapids (Iowa) mark the final stops on the club’s 10-game road trip.

On Sunday, the team will host Muskegon (Michigan) in its first game at Fox Valley Ice Arena since Dec. 12.

“It’s a lot of time on the bus, but time away can be good, too,” Steel coach Dan Muse said. “Guys are together every day. We’re eating all our meals together. We’re just constantly around each other. That part of it is good. It’s good for that team cohesion.”

A leaguewide holiday break followed the first two games of the trip. Since all but two games were played on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the team still held early-week practices in Geneva and weren’t always confined to a travel schedule.

“It’s good to get back here and guys can sleep in their own beds,” Muse said. “Get some good, hard practices in here.”

Sunday’s contest opens a four-game homestand and begins a stretch in which the Steel play 17 of their final 24 at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

The regular season ends with a visit from Madison on April 10.

“Half our games are going to be home, half are going to be on the road,” Muse said. “Our games on the road are pretty compact here, but we’ve got to grind through it, get some wins and then in the final stretch, we’re going to be home a lot here in those last couple months.”

Whirlwind settling down:

Center Tanner Laczynski, a Shorewood product committed to Ohio State, missed extended time last month to skate with the U.S. Junior Select team at the World Junior A Challenge in Ontario, Canada.

He returned seamlessly enough in late December, registering a hat trick in an 8-4 romp at Muskegon on Dec. 31.

“I’ve probably only had one other game where I’ve had even two goals, so obviously that was big,” Laczyns-

ki said. “But our team played well that game, and I thought it was a good team effort. And we needed that win.”

Laczynski, 18, is looking forward to some stability after a midweek trip to represent the Steel as one of four Chicago players in the USHL Top Prospects Game at Ralston (Nebraska) Arena, outside Omaha.

“Definitely, it’s been busy the last month or so, but it’s good to be back with the Steel and stuff and get the second half of the season going,” Laczynski said.

Dear Reader : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-lasting inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, warmth, redness and swelling in joints.

Over time, the affected joints may become misshapen, misaligned and damaged.

For many people with RA, drug treatment slows down the damaging effects of the disease.

But non-drug treatments – including heat therapy – play an important role in pain relief, improved range of motion and enhanced strength.

Heat helps by reducing pain and relaxing muscles. You can try some heat-related techniques at home: • Warm bath or shower . Soaking for 15 to 20 minutes in a warm bath exposes the body to warmth and allows the weight-bearing muscles to relax.

A warm shower also can help reduce stiffness. Dress warmly after a shower or bath to prolong the benefit.

• A heating pad is another good idea, but keep in mind moist heat penetrates more deeply.

You can buy hot packs and moist/dry heating pads.

Or create a homemade hot pack by heating a damp folded towel in a microwave oven for 20 to 60 seconds, or in an oven set to 300 degrees F for five to 10 minutes. To prevent burns, test the heated towel on the inside of your arm before applying to a joint: It should feel comfortably warm, not hot.

Dear Abby: I moved overseas for work when I was 18. My father divorced my mom around the same time. I used to come back to the U.S. for two weeks every year to visit and stay with Mom. However, for the past eight years she has sent me emails “suggesting” in a roundabout way I was not totally welcome. Because of this, I haven’t been back in six years.

For the past 20-plus years I have given my mother about $7,000. Because I’m not welcome in her home, I told her I won’t give her any more.

She now is showing regret for her previous emails, but for me it’s too late. Since I’m no longer sending money, she will have to sell her condo.

The grand aim of all bridge players is to find the winning line after drawing logical deductions from the auction – both bids and passes – and cards played. This deal is a good example.

It occurred during a junior match between the Czech Republic and England.

South was in four hearts after West had pre-empted in spades. West led the diamond seven to East’s jack and declarer’s ace. How did declarer analyze the play?

West drew in one notch (not bidding three spades) because he had a relatively weak suit and was vulnerable – but that was uncharacteristically cautious for a junior.

Frederick Illingworth (South) was threatened with five losers: three clubs and two hearts. The first problem was in the trump suit.

Typically, a pre-emptive overcall suggests shortness in the opener’s suit, but in this case, declarer felt that if West had been short in hearts, he would have considered sacrificing in four spades; instead, he had passed in tempo over four hearts.

So, South played a heart to the king and ace, won the next diamond in his hand, and cashed the heart queen.

Then he took his spade ace, played a diamond to the queen, ruffed the spade queen in his hand, discarded a club on the diamond 10, and led a trump to dummy. Illingworth completed a well-played deal by leading dummy’s club jack.

As the cards lay, the defenders could not take three tricks in the suit.

Souvenirs from his trips are displayed throughout his home in Washington’s LeDroit Park neighborhood.

Showcased on the main level are large, colorful artworks, collected during a 20-month stay in Pakistan, that were made to decorate trucks.

Arnheim’s travel interests extend to hosting out-oftown visitors. Three small dwellings on his property – a basement apartment, a carriage house and a converted storage unit – are listed on Airbnb and have attracted a steady stream of business travelers and tourists.

“Airbnb is a great way to get visitors into LeDroit Park, which is a very special neighborhood they might not otherwise visit,” said Arnheim, who helped plan the heritage trail signs in the neighborhood. “I like participating in the sharing economy and have met some really remarkable tenants.”

Renters have included actors from the Kennedy Center production of “Book of Mormon,” members of the rock band Haim playing the 9:30 Club and an Uzbek political dissident who testified before Congress on civil rights in Central Asia. Another guest was Columbia University law professor Tim Wu who coined the term “net neutrality,” the idea that Internet operators shouldn’t block or favor certain content.

Figuring out how to properly dispose of different types of batteries can be complicated. Every state but California allows you to put single-use alkaline batteries in the trash. They are recyclable, and most local recycling facilities accept them.

Rechargeable batteries must be recycled. They can be taken to your local waste facility or to a Best Buy – the stores accept rechargeable batteries weighing less than 10 pounds, laptop batteries, battery backups and cellphone batteries.

Small button cells such as those found in hearing aids and watches contain silver oxide and mercury and must also be recycled. If you get a professional to replace them, he will usually recycle the battery for you. If not, they can be taken to your local recycling facility.

“The D.C. market is very multicultural and diverse, and many of these groups are looking for homes that can accommodate their extended families,” she said. “Many have family members who visit for six months or longer, and we kept getting requests for first-floor bedroom suites.

We also knew that there was a segment of the market looking for accommodations for grown children who were moving back in with their parents for financial reasons or other reasons.”

Finances are not the only reason some families choose to live together, but the arrangement can be mutually beneficial, said Shelly Church, senior vice president of investments at Raymond James financial services in Naples, Fla. “Many older people find that the cost of living in senior housing is more than they can afford, and Medicaid is very difficult to qualify for because you have to have no assets at

all,” Church said. “In most cases, the main buyers pay for a multigenerational home and then their parents pay a little rent out of their Social Security benefits to help with expenses.”

Lennar anticipated that families would buy NextGen homes together, but Ashbaugh said the majority of sales are to one generation of buyers.

Church said co-ownership of the property could run into legal and tax complications and recommends hiring a lawyer to protect everyone’s interests. She said parents who opt to contribute a down payment should equalize the investment with their other children in some way so that the estate is evenly divided.

Mark Ralston’s parents made the down payment on their multigenerational home rather than pay utilities or rent.

“My parents were paying $4,300 a month in their retirement complex in Chicago, so this is great for their retirement cash flow,” Ralston said.

Lennar’s surveys of NextGen buyers have found that at least 50 percent say they are saving money with their new living arrangement because of reduced child-care, elder-care and transportation costs, as well as shared utility costs, sometimes $5,000 or more.

“My mother volunteered to pay the extra money that the multigenerational configuration cost, and she also calculated the monthly cost for her utilities,” Cox said.

“The important thing is that there’s no feeling of financial burden on either side. It’s just a convenient way to be co-located.”

Hart said multigenerational homes can be economical and functional through various life stages and family dynamics.
