Large signs in the windows of 109 W. Main St., St. Charles, advertise a February return for McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub above the phrase “Coming Back Again!”

The McNally’s name and logo also were observed Friday to be restored to the front and back doors of the pub.

McNally’s had been in St. Charles for more than 16 years before it closed April 4. The business re-opened April 14 as Valley Lodge Tavern until operations ceased Dec. 27, owner Bill Stavrou said.

The tavern had some success in Kane County, but it started to drain staffing and operational resources from the other Valley Lodge Tavern locations in Glenview and Wilmette, Stavrou said.

Stavrou said he has an ongoing business relationship with Maurice McNally, who had expressed interest in returning to the 109 W. Main

St. location.

McNally in December said he could not yet talk in detail about the future of the location. He did not respond during the first week in January to three separate requests for comment about the return signage at the pub.

McNally’s has no shortage of fans – they have been ecstatic on social media

Peace celebration set for Jan. 24 in Batavia If you go

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia business owner who facilitated the creation of a peace sign in the city’s downtown is expanding upon his idea.

Craig Foltos, owner of Foltos Tonsorial Parlor, has organized a Jan. 24 celebration of peace on the Peace Bridge, the pedestrian bridge over the Fox River, located directly east of the Batavia Government Center, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

Foltos said the celebration will begin at 6 p.m. Jan. 24 on the plaza west of the bridge and include a community sing-along, peace hug and handshake.

Foltos said he will have printed lyrics at the event and invites people to be ready to sing whatever songs of kindness they wanted.

“I just like to be part of something that’s a good feeling,” Foltos said. “I think there’s a lot of people that want to find peace and share peace.”

After Batavia Park Board approval, the large plywood letters have gone up on the south

side of the bridge during every holiday season since 2008. Foltos’ friends from Cornerstone Cabinet & Remodel, H&I Decorating and Music Matters helped to paint and transport the letters.

LOCAL BRIEFS Shell eggs being recalled

The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Good Earth Egg Company LLC of Bonne Terre, Missouri, has announced a voluntary recall of its shell eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

The Good Earth Egg Company’s recalled products were distributed throughout the Midwest, including in Missouri and Illinois, at the retail and wholesale level, states a news release from the health department. Although no reports of illness in Illinois related to the recall have been immediately reported, the Food and Drug Administration has notified the company that a link has been established between its products to cases of salmonella illnesses in Missouri, the release states. Salmonella is an

organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Consumers should discard any potentially affected product and its container. Good Earth Egg Company will work directly with each consumer to manage replacement of its product, the release states. Consumers with questions can contact Good Earth Egg Company at goodeartheggco@hotmail.com.

COVER STORY St. Charles board keeps schools open – for now

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The immediate threat to close three St. Charles schools ceased Monday night with the school board’s unanimous decision to keep the status quo – for now.

In its vote, the St. Charles School District 303 Board also directed the administration to explore options for Thompson Middle School.

That could, eventually, lead to closing a middle school, and it might lead to a referendum. Exact timelines and possibilities have yet to be developed.

“It’s a lot of moving parts,” Board President Steven Spurling said.

District 303 – which is facing declining enrollment – was considering options to cut costs in anticipation of getting less state funding, having the cost of teacher pensions shifted from the

“We do look at that,” he said, noting that the recent decision to move graduation from the Sears Centre to Northern Illinois University will result in an annual $30,000 savings.

Before its unanimous vote to maintain the status quo, the board on Monday first rejected a motion that called for saving Lincoln but closing the others, as well as making improvements at

Thompson Middle School.

Member Kathy Hewell, who made the motion, was its sole supporter. She cited financial reasons, including a recent unexpected move by the state estimated to cost District 303 about $1.2 million.

“We see dark clouds,” she said. “I have a great concern about our fiscal health going forward.”

Member Lori Linkimer said she felt “blindsided” by Hewell’s motion, and member Ed McNally advocated for Wasco.

“I don’t see Wasco floundering as much as I think others might,” he said.

Member Jim Gaffney suggested going to referendum in November so the board would hear from the district’s entire constituency, not just those passionate about Lincoln and Wasco.

“Let the electoral system tell us in November what they want to do,” he said. “I want the whole public to speak.”

Village of Campton Hills launches new, user-friendly website

Village President Harry Blecker said the best thing about the redesign is that it

makes navigation easier.

“It’s easy to use; it’s easy to get around; it’s clearer,” Blecker said. “It’s user-friendly. It’s also mobile-friendly.”

The previous website required users to zoom in and out, while the new website responds to fit the screen of the device, according to the news release.

When Blecker took office last year, officials began posting full village board packets online, but they were hard to find, he

said.

“This is much more user-friendly,” Blecker said.

A new feature is “Community Voice,” which will pave the way for residents to submit ideas and suggestions directly through the website, as well as have discussions about local issues. according to the release.

Also new is “News Flash” on the home page, which will keep residents notified of local issues and upcoming events, Blecker

said.

The new website includes forms that can be filled out online and submitted, as well as an improved calendar, according to the release.

Another feature is called “Notify Me.” It will allow those interested to receive electronic news and alerts, Blecker said.

Those already registered to receive the electronic newsletter, “Community Counts,” automatically will be switched over to

Geneva Chamber has plenty ahead in 2016 Personally, it takes me some time to get used to a new date. For a few weeks in January, I will continue to write the year 2015 on everything.

After all, for 12 months I have written 2015. Habits are hard to break.

However, at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, even if I still am writing 2015, we have been thinking about 2016 for quite some time.

Dates are already set for our four festivals and a few other events. Thinking about ways that we can enhance these events, while complementing favorites already in place, is a never-ending topic in our office. Producing high-quality festivals is always top of mind, and – in order to do that –

Food bank celebrates 5 million servings of milk

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Only three years ago, milk was the least-donated item to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, yet it was the most requested item by families in need.

Because of its shelf life and need for refrigeration, about one gallon of milk could be provided for a family per year, food bank spokeswoman Donna Lake said.

But Monday, the food pantry celebrated distributing its 5 millionth serving of milk through its Milk2MyPlate program with a luncheon and recognition of dairy farmers, the Midwest Dairy Association, and other participating agencies at its Geneva headquarters.

Steve Ericson, director of food procurement at the food bank, said the pilot program is now delivering 15,000 gallons a month to 42 community food pantries across 12 Illinois counties, including Kane.

“Forty-eight hours before the milk is in the pantry, it was in a cow,” Ericson said.

The food bank splits the cost with the 42 pantries so its clients all have access to fresh milk, said Hester Bury, director of corporate and foundation giving for the food bank.

A $60 donation will provide a gallon of milk for 52 weeks for one family, officials said.

Feeding America identified the need for milk nationally

through its food bank network, in what Jerod Matthews called “a lightbulb moment” in realizing the need for milk. He praised the food bank, its partner organizations, dairies and farmers for making Milk2MyPlate a success.

Calling himself a “one-man show,” Matthews said he was taking this model and sharing it nationwide. So far, he said, it has been picked up in Chicago, Oakland, California and Kansas City, Missouri.

By Gina Kraman A fully charged battery, plenty of antifreeze and windshield washer fluid, top-quality wiper blades, and deep-tread tires help make winter driving safer by avoiding cold weather problems.

The Car Care Council (CCC) recommends key steps for winterizing your car, including having the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance, as cold weather can drain batteries more quickly than warmer temperatures.

“Clean, flush, and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. This should be done at least every two years,” says the CCC. Anti-freeze, according to car experts, when added to the water in an engine’s cooling system, does what it says: it makes sure the water won’t freeze when the outside temperature drops. It also protects the engine to stay free of corrosion. Car manufacturers have varying recommendations, as outlined in the owner’s manuals.

Make sure your heater, defroster, and wipers work properly; the CCC recommends new wiper blades every six months.

Check tire air pressure weekly and replace balding tires to maintain optimum traction.

“Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to ‘winter weight’ oil,” advises the CCC. “If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done soon. Winter magnifies existing problems, such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance, and rough idling.”

The CCC urges having brakes checked, as “the braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item. Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather when the windows are closed.”

Lighting should also be inspected, making sure that headlights are working and aimed properly, and that interior lights are fully functioning.

BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101 officials continue to take steps toward improving Batavia High School’s outdoor campus, but they have not yet made a final decision regarding the installation of synthetic turf.

The school district on Wednesday posted separate bids for a high school track and field replacement project as well as one for a synthetic turf project.

District officials plan to give a brief status report on the bid process for the projects at 7 p.m. today during a regular board meeting at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

Work on the high school track must be completed this summer because it is more than 20 years old and in poor condition, Tony Inglese, the district’s chief financial officer, wrote Monday in an email. The addition of synthetic turf is completely discretionary, and it would be up to the Batavia School Board to decide on funding options, Inglese wrote.

Project bids will be unsealed Friday, and the school board will accept or reject bids at its Jan. 26 meeting. Should the board decide to pursue a synthetic turf field, it is the district’s hope that the project could be done concurrent-

ly this summer with the track project to save money, Inglese confirmed in the email.

The district will have more specific cost estimates for the projects once the bids are unsealed. At the start of the board’s Nov. 17, meeting, Batavia athletic boosters told board members a total of $105,000 was committed for field improvements with the goal of raising another $200,000.

Some board members expressed their initial support for a partnership with the boosters to continue to raise money for a synthetic turf field.

The referendum advisory question rejected by voters Nov. 4, 2014, asked whether the board should issue $15 million in debt for the fields and other capital projects, not whether the district should do the projects, according to a Nov. 23 district post.

Batavia resident Sylvia Keppel at the Nov. 17, meeting suggested that a referendum question directly asking whether people supported synthetic turf should go before voters.

Keppel said she did not consider the turf to be a necessity at the high school.

Another setback for antibiotics THE WASHINGTON POST The remarkable advances in genomics have provided an ever-more-startling view of life’s basic mechanics.

Just in recent days, scientists sleuthing through huge databases unearthed a worrisome discovery: A mobile gene that can help bacteria resist antibiotics has spread to many more countries than previously realized. The good news is that technology is pulling back the curtain. The bad news is that the problem of antibiotic resistance has opened a new front.

Ever since humans developed antibiotics in earnest more than half a century ago, bacteria have been finding ways to resist the drugs. For several decades, it was possible to stay ahead of this trend by finding new antibiotics. But then the pace of innovation slowed, and bacteria evolved methods to resist more and more antibiotics. Without these drugs, some diseases can become untreatable.

In November and December, researchers in China and Denmark reported discovering evidence of resistance to the antibiotic colistin. A relatively old antibiotic with toxic side effects, colistin has been used for human health in the United States – when other antibiotics don’t work, colistin is sometimes deployed as a last resort – and it has been used on farm animals overseas. The resistance mechanism to colistin was carried on a plasmid (a kind of bus for genetic material) given the designation MCR1 that can be transferred from one bacterium to another.

mark, a slew of new MCR-1 sightings appeared in the journal the Lancet Infectious Diseases. In France, scientists looked at 517 isolates from veal calves taken from 2005 to 2014 on 94 widely distant farms. They found MCR-1 on 21 percent of them and estimated that the dissemination happened a decade ago.

In Germany, researchers looked at 577 isolates since 2009 and found evidence of MCR-1 in three swine and one human. “Our data suggest that the advent of untreatable infections has already arrived,” they declared, because every bacteria resistant to colistin also was resistant to more modern antibiotics.

There were similar reports from scientists checking data from animals and people in Japan, Vietnam, Switzerland, Belgium and elsewhere.

This kind of forensic examination is revelatory but not the last word. The agriculture industry has long defended giving antibiotics to healthy animals to help them grow larger and faster, saying that the practice does not contribute to resistance to antibiotics important to human health.

But the latest findings suggest humans and other animals are not so easily separated when it comes to antibiotic resistance. It also suggests that relatively older antibiotics, like colistin, can lead to resistance that undermines more modern antibiotics vital to human health. Antibiotics have for too long been overused in both human health and animal agriculture, and the new research is yet another reason to insist these valuable drugs be dispensed more judiciously – everywhere.

To the Editor: The Illinois General Assembly passed – and the governor recently signed – a bill that released nearly $3 billion of already-collected money, most of which was sitting in dedicated funds. Among these are utility rate-payer contributions to the Illinois Supplemental Low-Income Energy Assistance Fund, which supplements the federal LIHEAP program.

These rate-payer contributions are collected through our utility bills and placed in a public trust for the exclusive purpose of aiding our state’s elderly, people with special needs, veterans and poor to pay the high cost of heat and electricity. I commend the General Assembly and governor for finally releasing these funds as the winter months were approaching.

Despite this step forward, the bigger budget discussion continues, and these funds still are in danger. These

SLEAF funds are not general revenue funds and should be off the table as Springfield considers solutions to the current fiscal year and fiscal year 2017 budgets.

These funds, combined with the federal funds, only satisfy a small fraction of the state’s overall need. The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity estimated that – under current state and federal funding levels – LIHEAP would only help 35 percent of the roughly 926,000 eligible households in Illinois this year.

The SLEAF fund also helps keep all rate-payers’ bills lower by reducing the “uncollectables” the utilities recover in everyone’s rates.

Given the escalating utility

costs, the harsh Illinois winters our residents have had to endure in recent years, and the ongoing hardships due to the budget stalemate and slow economic recovery, these funds are needed more than ever.

Challenging fiscal decisions must be made; however, any budget solutions cannot include consideration of redirecting these much-needed funds into the general revenue fund, or reallocating any portion of these funds. It is imperative that the Illinois SLEAF, which aids our most vulnerable residents, be protected.

When outdoor courts are covered with ice and snow, it can seem winter lasts forever.

Tennis requires its athletes to be at their pinnacle physically. Players must be in great cardiovascular shape, and their varied movements demand so many different areas of strength.

“It’s hard to just go out there in the spring without playing at all for four months,” said Andrew Nelson, a senior captain for the Batavia boys tennis team.

One of the most effective ways for tennis players to build strength is by working out in the gym. Some tennis players are more powerful on one side, but during the offseason, they can work on both sides and strengthen their weaker side, be it the forehand or backhand, all while building the balance that is so important to their game.

NOTEWORTHY Ralston praises assistant

Geneva coach Phil Ralston has had to deal with his fair share of injuries this year, and that includes his own.

Ralston has spent most of the season coaching on crutches after having knee surgery in November. It hasn’t been easy, but he’s also had some in-house help.

With one of the more animated assistant coaches you’ll see – animated and involved – Vikings assistant coach Scott Hennig has been instrumental in much of what the team has been able to do this year.

“I want to give a huge shout out to Scott,” Ralston said. “With the stuff I have had to deal with medically, he has really picked up the slack and then some.

He is as much of a part of the success we’re having as anyone. He’s a fantastic scout and has helped prepare us to defend every set teams throw at us and it’s shown tremendously.”

Ralston said it also was largely Hennig’s idea to add more layers to Geneva’s offense to give teams a harder time trying to defend the Vikings on that end of the court.

That was evident as Geneva cruised to a victory over St. Charles East Friday night, leading most of the way thanks

to its 70 percent (21 for 30) shooting performance as a team.

East coach Pat Woods got some tragic news Friday night, learning a former player, Mike Woods (no relation), had passed away.

Mike Woods, a 2013 East graduate, played for the Saints up until his junior year, but both coach and player remained especially close after Mike Woods graduated from East.

“Mike was a great kid with a big heart,” Pat Woods said. “He was so passionate about everything he did, and he loved the game of basketball. He lived and breathed the game of basketball. He touched a lot of people with the kind of person he was and he is really going to be missed.”

Pat Woods said his fondest memory of Mike Woods came in a Thanksgiving tournament game, where Mike Woods had what Pat Woods called “a monster game” and “probably won that game for us.”

COMING ATTRACTION I think it’s fair to say that not too many people expected Batavia to be sitting at 5-0 through five games in the UEC River. With East coming off of a tough defeat at home to Geneva, the Saints (3-1 in the River) will host Batavia Thursday night in what would be for sole possession of first place in the division. East has won the last nine meetings with the Bulldogs, dating back to a 63-54 Batavia win on Dec. 3, 2010.

Sauveur stepped down from his role after seven seasons with Pawtucket. The Red Sox showed a penchant for using major league pitching coaches with experience at the big league level, and his ultimate goal is to be a coach in MLB. Sauveur resigned without resentment, taking the tack that it was time for a change.

A veteran of winter ball in Latin America both as a player and coach, Sauveur said he speaks some Spanish. His wife hails from Guatemala.

Block party brewing: Cougars owner Dr. Bob Froehlich and general manager Curtis Haug extended the club’s hospitality last summer when the USHL’s Chicago Steel moved operations to Fox Valley Ice Arena, adjacent to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on the Kirk Road corridor.

Steel brass haven’t forgotten the Cougars’ gesture and are anxious to cultivate a longstanding relationship.

“They’ve been really great neighbors, right from the start,” Steel president Dan Lehv said.

New Cougars pitching coach Rich Sauveur summarized his 2015 sabbatical from baseball as “just stepping away for a little bit.”

In the next breath, he called the break the impetus for his return, as well.

A longtime former coach in the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox organizations – including seven seasons as pitching coach for Boston’s Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket (R.I.) – Sauveur is embracing the opportunity to work with Class-A prospects in the Arizona Diamondbacks system.

“I’ve loved this game for years,” Sauveur, 52, said. “I started playing when I was eight years old. It’s part of my life. … Kids will ask me and I”ll tell them stories and what I’ve gone though. And it just seems like every year there’s something new, something great to add.”

Sauveur, a left-hander, made 34 major league appearances with six clubs while pitching in three different decades. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the fifth round of the 1983 draft. His last professional season was in 2000, with the Oakland A’s.

Along the way, he witnessed George Brett’s 3,000th hit while pitching with the 1992 Kansas City Royals, developed an affinity for Frank Thomas with the 1996 White Sox and beamed over having Jason Giambi as a teammate with the 2000 A’s.

Although the on-field results might have been sharper, Sauveur savors the memories and anecdotes he accumulated along with a 6.07 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 46 career innings just the same.

Sauveur did not pitch in the Midwest League as a minor leaguer, but served as Beloit’s pitching coach during the 2003 and 2004 MWL seasons. A three home-run game from the Cougars’ Nelson Cruz remains a recollection.

“I’m looking forward to getting back with the young kids again,” Sauveur said. “It’s a lot of fun. They want to learn

Lehv also has extensive experience in minor league and independent baseball, most recently with the St. Paul Saints, whose ownership includes Lehv’s mentor, Mike Veeck.

Veeck, the son of baseball visionary Bill Veeck – whose myriad contributions to the game included introducing ivy to Wrigley Field’s outfield wall – was the inspiration and a distinguished guest for the Cougars’ “Night of 100 Promotions” in August 2011.

“Mike’s always in my mind,” Lehv said. “Everything that we think about as an organization, it does, it comes back to great customer service. In the end, you want to be treated well wherever you go, and it’s the human touch that separates whether or not you have a really good experience or whether it’s not a place that you want to spend 21/2, three hours with your family. So I’m always thinking about Mike when we talk about those things.”

Big on Bell: By definition, 2015 Cougars pitching coach Doug Bochtler joined a rival organization when he became the San Diego Padres’ bullpen coach last month.

The tenets of the National League West notwithstanding, Bochtler said he always will revere the D’backs executives who gave him an opportunity to coach five seasons ago, namely farm director Mike Bell, a champion of collaborative thinking.

“He was able to cultivate an environment where we had the ability to learn, we had the ability to make mistakes, we had the ability to connect to one another in a much different way,” Bochtler said. “Some people that come from outside the organization, they’re constantly reminding people in the Diamondbacks organization that this is not the way that it’s done everywhere else. So for Mike Bell to cultivate that environment, I feel really grateful to have started my coaching career there. I really have nothing but great things to say about that organization.”

The Bulldogs needed some Coffey.

Senior Canaan Coffey made seven 3-pointers, finishing with a game-high 25 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 67-59 victory over the Cadets.

“We knew he was a shooter and had some range,” Marmion coach Joe Currie said.

“Give him credit. I thought out guys had a hand in his face and switched out on him. That was the thing, though. I said he’s got range so credit him, he stayed with it.”

The timing of his shots could not have been better for the Bulldogs, especially in the second half as his 3-pointers terminated a few of Marmion’s second half rallies.

“He’ll let the guys do their thing, but when he feels he’s got to hit a shot, he did,” Currie said. “He’s a great player.”

Marmion (8-7) only trailed, 31-25, at the half, but the Bulldogs opened the second half with an 8-0 run that culminated on a Coffey trey.

The Cadets pulled to within 44-40 with 1:57 left in the third quarter, but Coffey answered with another 3-pointer just nine seconds later.

great start and didn’t have a letdown after getting a huge conference win against Larkin the night before.

The Bulldogs used a 13-0 run to take a 20-9 lead after one quarter.

“There can’t be any letdown in energy,” Coffey said.

“You’ve got to stay positive and keep each other up. We en-

joyed that moment (on Friday), but we got right back to it (Saturday) morning in practice.”

At 6-foot-4, Batavia’s John Fitch (18 points, 10 rebounds) expected to be looking up at Marmion’s 6-foot-8 sophomore, Mick Sullivan, but Sullivan injured his ankle on Friday and was sidelined. Instead, Fitch battled with 6-foot-5 Matt Fletcher (17 points, nine rebounds) to what amounted to a draw.

“I always play undersized, but I tend to do well because I play bigger guys in AAU,” Fitch said. “It was a fun rebounding battle. Boxing out, I always love that.”

Fletcher, Hunter Weber (12 points) and Jon Young (19 points, 10 rebounds) did their part to keep the Cadets from fading, but ultimately they had to contend with too much Coffey.

It was the first time the two teams played since the Class AA Batavia regional in 2004.

Currie said they’ll play again next year, but at Batavia.

GENEVA – The Cougars will welcome their 2016 field staff and organizational brass when the club hosts a “Meet the Diamondbacks” hot stove event at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Jan. 29.

No, this isn’t a dollhouse. It is a Victorian sewing box worth $3,075. The roof covers a tray with sewing implements and thread, important tools in the days when home sewing was important.

Company. The company went out of business in 1985. *** Q: My mother was given a pewter vase as a wedding gift. It’s inscribed on the bottom “Pewter by Calatoff, hand wrought 5075.” My mother is 95 years old, so I know the vase is very old, though not necessarily valuable. What can you tell me about its age and value?

A: The maker is Galatoff, not Calatoff, and it probably was made in the early 1940s, assuming your mother was married when she was in her early 20s. We couldn’t find any information about the maker, but Galatoff pewter items sell for moderate prices. An ice cream bowl was listed for $20, a two-handled centerpiece bowl for $30, an incense burner for $20 and a jug for $75. *** Q: My dad was given a wooden boat model built by prisoners when he was the administrator of the Leesburg Prison Farm in Leesburg,

New Jersey, in the late 1940s. It was a gift. It’s a cabin cruiser, 36 inches long, and is in good condition. I’d like to know where I might be able to sell it.

A: Prison art is collectible. If you search the words “prison art” online, you’ll find several sites that sell prison art or buy it. Some prisons offer art therapy or art lessons for prisoners, while others provide the time or materials for the prisoner to produce art on his own. A Tennessee art college worked with prisoners on death row to create work for a gallery showing. Richard Matt, a convicted murderer serving time in an upstate New York prison, did portraits of movie stars and other famous people based on photographs. He bartered some of his paintings and drawings for tools he used in his escape. Those who sell prison art must buy it first. One of the sites might buy your boat. *** Tip: Candle drippings can be removed from fabric or furniture with the help of ice cubes. Rub the wax with the ice until the wax hardens.

Every household had a person who could make, alter and mend clothing before the sewing machine was invented in 1842. Learning to darn, mend and make samplers was part of the education for girls rich enough to go to school in a city. So every family had a sewing basket or table with all of the needles, thread, scissors and other small items used when sewing. The main room of the house, near a fireplace or stove, often was the place chosen to keep the sewing supplies, and the wife did the sewing in the evening while chatting with her family. The sewing box was attractive, often a skillfully crafted wooden box or even a table with a lift top that opened to a bag that held fabrics. But sometimes the sewing box was imaginative, made in the shape of a house or covered in painted designs. At a 2015 auction, a decorated folk-art Victorian sewing box was offered for sale. The house-shaped box had a fabric-covered pin cushion in the center of the “roof,” which opened to expose a compartmented lift-out tray. The house had a brick foundation, front porch and windows with shutters. It was in a 20-by-2-inch “yard” with a picket fence. It looks like a dollhouse, so it must have been tempting for children to try to see inside. It sold for $3,075 at the Skinner sale in Boston. *** Q: We got this personal Camel cigarettes tin ashtray from my husband’s aunt several years ago. We still have the original box it came in. His aunt came from a time when women couldn’t smoke in public and she had to sneak her cigarettes.

What is it worth?

A: This portable tin Camel “cigarette case” is small enough to fit into a pocket or purse. When you push in the bottom of the box, the retractable ashtray slides out and the cigarette rest pops out. They sell online for about $6 to $12. ***

Q: I have a large cup with a handle that has writing and pictures on it. There is a poem on one side. On the other side is a bundle of wheat sheaves in a circle and the words “In God we trust, The Farmer’s Arms.” Four pictures of farm implements are around the circle. The cup is marked on the bottom “Adams, Est. 1657, England.” Is it old or valuable?

A: Your cup was made by William Adams and Sons, which was founded in Staffordshire, England, in 1769. The date in the mark refers to an earlier pottery founded

by John Adams, a relative. William Adams and Sons became part of the Wedgwood Group in 1966. The name “Adams” was used on some items through 1998. This large cup is sometimes called a “mush cup” and sometimes just a large coffee cup. It was made in the late-19th or early 20th century, and sells today for about $30, double if there is a saucer. ** * Q: I’m looking for information on a chair made by the B.L. Don’t bully back. Getting angry and fighting back sometimes is just what the bully wants. It’s dangerous too, because someone could get hurt.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff AAA are men ages 65 to 75 who have ever smoked, or who have a first-degree (parent or sibling) relative who has had an AAA repair (or died from a ruptured AAA).

Smaller AAAs are monitored with regular ultrasound tests. The larger the AAA is, and the faster it grows, the greater the risk that it will rupture. When an AAA ruptures, it causes massive bleeding inside the abdomen. The odds of survival are pretty low.

So when an AAA reaches a size that is likely to rupture, it should be repaired.

Until recent years, repair of an AAA involved major surgery. Surgeons opened the abdomen, cut out the diseased section of the aorta, and replaced it with a synthetic tube (typically made of polyester). Today, most AAAs are treated with a minimally invasive procedure known as endovascular repair. The surgeon passes a catheter through a small incision in the leg and threads it into the aorta to reach the AAA. A fabric-coated stent is then put in place to reinforce the bulging aorta, which seals around it.

To avoid an AAA, the same advice for preventing heart disease applies: • Don’t smoke; • Eat a healthy diet; • Exercise regularly; • Keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in a healthy range.

These habits are also vital if you already have an AAA, because you’ll want to be as healthy as possible if you end up needing surgery.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old girl, and I have an odd problem with my grandmother. She lives in another state and she loves to go to garage sales. She even finds some new clothing items once in a while that still have the price tags on them. However, most of them are used, and some of them are not my style.

She knows my size and she often buys clothes for me and mails them to me.

I’ve written to her a couple of times and asked her to stop sending me used clothing, but she continues to waste her time and money by mailing me this stuff. How can I convince her to stop? Dear Dr. K: I had pain in my abdomen, so my doctor did an ultrasound to check for gallstones.

It turns out I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

What is that?

Dear Reader: The aorta is the body’s largest artery. It carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to every part of the body. The aorta curves out of the heart and through the chest, then passes down the center of the body before dividing into the arteries that serve the legs.

An aneurysm is an abnormal swelling and weakening in an artery.

An aneurysm that occurs in the aorta as it passes through the middle of the body is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Like other blood vessels, the aorta can develop atherosclerosis.

Harmful cholesterol-filled plaques form, damaging and weakening the artery wall. The constant pressure of blood flowing through the aorta – which is worse in people with high blood pressure – can cause the artery’s wall to bulge where there is a weak spot. The majority of AAAs grow very slowly and don’t cause any symptoms. Most AAAs are found by chance during an imaging test performed for another reason, as yours was. Rarely, AAAs cause symptoms such as a deep pain or a throbbing sensation in the back or the side of the abdomen. An imaging test – an ultrasound, CT or MRI scan – then is ordered, which reveals the AAA. Because AAAs are quite unusual except in high-risk groups, routine imaging studies are not recommended. However, in high-risk groups, screening with ultrasound is recommended.

Dear Abby: My husband has developed a bad case of periodontal disease. I’m afraid to kiss him because I don’t want the bacteria causing the disease to spread, and his bad breath is unbearable. Our sex life is suffering because of it.

We have two beautiful children together, and I love him very much – even if he loses all his teeth at the age of 37. I have explained how extremely important oral hygiene is to overall health, especially heart health, and how his unwillingness to deal with this sends the wrong message to our kids.

He simply refuses or conveniently “forgets.” When I asked him why, he said his mother traumatized him about it as a child.

My children are starting to take notice now. My daughter doesn’t want to go near him, and my son thinks it’s OK to not brush his teeth because his father doesn’t. As you can see, this is disrupting our family.

When it won, declarer cashed his diamond ace and ruffed a diamond with the heart nine. East overruffed with the 10 and returned a trump to stop a second diamond ruff. South returned to his hand with a club, drew trumps, crossed to dummy with a spade, and cashed the club ace. When the jack dropped, declarer claimed these 12 tricks: one spade, five hearts, two diamonds and four clubs.
