Students take on trash with robotics at Batavia regional On the web

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – One of the most difficult tasks that the Lego Eagles team robot had on Saturday was getting down to a composter on the other side of a table. “It was so far away, and it’s a small area you have to hit,�

Rotolo eighth-grader Rebecca Marston said. “We were successful three out of the four rounds.�

The Lego Eagles were one of 30 teams who competed Saturday in the Batavia FIRST Lego League Regional held at Rotolo Middle School in Batavia. FIRST is an acronym meaning “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.�

The league each year announces a challenge theme, and this year was “Trash Trek,� which explored what should be done with all the trash created on the planet.

Students competed in four areas – project presentation, technical design and programming of a robot, robot performance and teamwork, or core values. “[League officials] try to pick topics relative to kids, something they can get into,� said Ron Karabowicz, coordinator of the Batavia regional and Fox Valley Robotics president.

Students embraced the trash topic and used their creativity to stand out in the presentation section of the competition. Some groups had costumes, and another group performed a song with lyrics based on singer The Weeknd’s

Brandon Cosby’s team – the Illinois Math and Science Academy Army of Electrons – explored ways to address the use of mercury, which is toxic to humans. “I thought it would be a cool thing to do – I like it,� Cosby said of his first year on a robotics team.

The Lego Eagles were one of eight teams on Saturday who qualified to compete in a state competition of their choosing – either Jan. 16 at Elgin Community College in Elgin or Jan. 23 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Thunder Bots, which also has Rotolo students as its members, also advanced. One of the team’s coaches, Kevin Schulhof, has been involved Fox Valley Robotics since 2011. “For kids that want to learn how to be involved in science and engineering, having Fox Valley Robotics is a really good opportunity,� Schulhof said.

The other six teams to advance to the state level were Royal Tech, Trash Twistax, Quadbrick, Techno Storms, Darien and Circuit Breakers.

McNally’s Heating and Cooling provides free furnace for South Elgin family

By KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A South Elgin family received a new furnace and free installation from St. Charles-based McNally’s Heating and Cooling as a way to give back during the holiday season.

Last month, McNally’s accepted nominations on its Facebook page, seeking to help a family going through hardships. McNally’s indicated

there were numerous nominations before choosing the Jurgovans of South Elgin. According to a news release, Eric and Amanda Jurgovan’s daughter, McKenna, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at 9 months old, and Amanda Jurgovan stopped working to devote more time to taking care of McKenna.

McKenna now is 4 years old and doing well, the release indicated, adding that the Jurgovans also have another daugh-

ter, Emery, who is 19 months old.

“Our old furnace is on the fritz,” Amanda Jurgovan stated in the release. “The auto fan isn’t working, so we are running it continuously in order for it to blow hot air, which drives up both our electric and gas bills. We are also a one-income family, and with our pocketbook lighter during the holidays, this couldn’t have happened at a better time.”

LOCAL BRIEF Police release name of crash victim

SUGAR GROVE – Police on Monday released the name of a man critically injured in a Sugar Grove crash last week.

David Alvarado, 20, of Aurora, remained in critical condition Monday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

He was injured about 9:30 a.m.

Dec. 15 on Galena Boulevard while pushing a 2010 Toyota Yaris in the westbound lanes where the road goes over Route 56, police have said. He was struck from behind by a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu.

Police Chief Pat Rollins did not provide details about Alvarado’s injuries, only that “it was

traumatic at the scene.”

Police previously withheld Alvarado’s name because his family was out of the country.

The 18-year-old driver of the Malibu – Jorge Espinosa of Aurora – was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and not having a valid driver’s license.

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – When Rachel Osofsky saw a picture of a monitor readout on Sept. 22 in her email, she was thrilled.

Osofky, a graduate student in physics at the University of Washington in Seattle, was waiting to see if a large electromagnet would turn on after being dormant for roughly a decade.

The reading she saw in the picture signified that the 17ton, 50-foot wide circular object was indeed operational.

“After all the work that went into making that happen, it was really exciting,” Fermilab researcher Brendan Kiburg said.

The magnet is an essential part of the Muon g-2 experiment. The experiment aims to study the properties of muons, or subatomic particles, so researchers can try to determine whether there are elementary particles beyond the ones already known.

“The point is that we are trying to build a better periodic table of the components of nature,” Kiburg said. “It’s research for knowledge’s sake.”

Researchers need the circular magnet so they can examine the interactions of the muons with a strong magnetic field.

The ring was built in the 1990s at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York for a similar experiment, one which found hints of new physics beyond what scientists have observed.

The magnet had to be transported 3,200 miles across the country in 2013 from Brookhaven to Fermilab through special arrangements involving night trips and road closures.

The magnet’s current home is in a new building on the Fermilab campus. Once placed in a magnetic field, the muons will figuratively race or spin about the area. The

A total of 150 people are working on the experiment on- and offsite, not including several Fermilab staff helping with the preparations, Soha said. The experiment receives support from the Department of Energy, Soha said, and the department is the main source of funding for Fermilab.

The magnet also will be used for a separate project located nearby known as the Mu2e, or the muon-to-electron conversion experiment.

They are about 10 inches high and sell today for $25 to $50 each, or about $200 for both Mickey and Minnie with original boxes. Mickey and Minnie marionettes were also made in the 1950s by Peter Puppet Playthings.

They were composition and wood with cotton and felt clothing, about 12 inches high, and are worth about $50 each. The “holy grails” of Mickey and Minnie Mouse marionettes were made in the 1930s by Hestwood Marionette Studio of Glendale, California.

Mickey, Minnie and Pluto were made of wood, composition and cloth and came in fabric drawstring bags. “Belsnickle” is a German name said by some to be taken from the words “belzen,” meaning “to wallop,” and “Nickel,” a form of the name Nikolas. Others say the name is from “pelz,” the German word for fur. Modern tradition prefers the more friendly idea of an old man dressed in fur and rags who gave toys to good children.

He visited children at their homes and asked them if they had been good all year. Of course they said “yes,” so he gave them all gifts. The Belsnickle figure represents a poor man who wanted food or money. He was usually made with a bent back, large face and long beard. Many were shown with their hands hidden in the rags as if they were cold. Those images disappeared in 1862 when Thomas Nast created the fat, smiling Santa for Harper’s Weekly. Today, most Santas look like the one from the 1930s Coca-Cola ads. Early Belsnickles did not wear red, so figures with green, gray dark blue coats are the oldest and probably the most expensive. But be careful, very good reproductions are still being made. They are originally sold as modern copies, but after going to a house sale, the history is lost and they may fool an unwary collector. This Pennsylvania German folk art Belsnickle was sold a few years ago

by Bertoia Auctions for $18,400. It was made of brown chalkware in the late 1800s. *** Q: We have a wooden folding pool table from the late 1950s or early

1960s. It’s 40 inches by 22 1/2 inches and folds down for storage. There are two cues, the balls, and the triangle to set them. The original tab on the underside reads “The Burrowes Corporation, Model 408, Pool/Billiard Tables, Portland Maine.” It’s in great condition. Is this of any value?

A: E.T. Burrowes was founded in Portland, Maine, in 1873. The company made wire screens for doors and windows, folding card tables, cedar chests, billiard and pool tables, and parts for automobiles. In an 1892 ad, the company claimed it was the world’s largest maker of wire window and door screens. A 1903 ad listed Burrowes combination billiard and pool tables that could be set on top of a dining room or library table. Legs could be added to stand the pool table on the floor. Prices ranged from $6 to $15 for small tables and $25 to $75 and up for larger versions. By 1906 the company was advertising spare wheels, rims and other items for automobiles. Your table might sell for $50 to $150 at auction.

OBITUARIES DOROTHY D. KUSTER Born: May 6, 1934 Died: Dec. 17, 2015

Dorothy Dolores “Dee” Kuster, of Santa Fe, NM, died on Thursday, December 17, 2015, at Christus St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe after a stroke brought on by hip surgery following a fall. She was 81.

She is survived by her two sons, Miles Canada, Saratoga, CA, Curtis Canada, Santa Fe, NM; and two grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Kuster.

Dolores was born in Yount, Mo on May 6, 1934, to Elmer and Esther (Bowling) Thompson. She studied at William Woods College and worked for many years as a legal secretary in St. Charles. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Dolores enjoyed sewing, knitting, and painting and delighted in her faithful Tibetan Terrier, Buddy.

She was married to Arthur Kuster in 1979. Upon retiring the couple moved to Tennessee finally settling in Crossville where they were active members of the First United Methodist Church of Crossville.

Together they enjoyed many retirement years gardening, traveling the country with their fifth wheel, sampling local foods, and gathering recipes.

She will be interred alongside her husband at Arlington National Cemetery.

Bennett and the great Tenors like Pavarotti and Bocelli. She loved baseball and frequently spoke of her days as a baseball wife in Brooklyn, NY in the 1950’s. She found great joy in being with her family and had an endless love for her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Mary) Meyer of St. Charles, Melinda Ramsden of Elgin, Ben (Michelle) Oswalt of North Aurora, Randy Meyer of Toledo, OH, Holly Sparks of Batavia, Christine (Jim) Kautz of Geneva and Patti Oswalt of Big Bend, WI; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Harriett Bowes of Indiana; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Wendall, Harland and Wayne who died in infancy;and loving husband, Benjamin who passed away in 2004.

Visitation will be held Saturday, December 26, 2015, at 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Malone Funeral Home, Geneva, 324 E. State St. (Rt. 38), Geneva followed by a funeral service at 1:00 pm, Rev. Dr. Mark Tusken, officiating.

Stephen worked for over 38 years in manufacturing and most recently was a program manager at VideoJet Systems International in Wood Dale. He was an all around handyman and good at fixing anything, sometimes when nothing was

broken. His ability to fix things came from a drive to find how things work, particularly computers and cars. Stephen also enjoyed model railroads.

He was a loving husband and father and found great joy sharing time with his family.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 21 years, Lynn (Malone); Lynn’s sons, Christopher and Brian; brother, Michael (Elaine); sisters, Sue (Cam) Crooks of Arizona and Elizabeth Thomas of Des Plaines; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School District 302 Board will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 29 at Kaneland Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove to vote on a new four-year contract with the Kaneland Education Association.

Harter Middle School is at 1601 Esker Drive in Sugar Grove.

Last week, both sides announced in a news release that a tentative agreement was reached between the school board and the organization that represents the district’s teachers. KEA members have ratified the agreement.

The release indicated that the terms of the agreement would not be available until

ratification by the KEA and school board was complete.

Negotiations took place for months, and – in November – KEA members had voted “in favor of moving forward with an intent to strike.”

Teachers recently had staged informational picketing sessions, and KEA members had appeared to speak during the public comment portion of school board meetings to urge board members to come to an agreement.

In last week’s news release, both sides stated that the board and KEA “worked hard to develop an agreement that meets the needs of our teachers, students and community without a disruption to the school year. We look forward to working together moving forward.”

Lindsey Graham is out; others should follow

By JENNIFER RUBIN The Washington Post Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, arguably the funniest man in the Senate and the GOP presidential field, exited the race Monday. He recognized reality, namely that, “We’ve come to a point now where I just don’t see how we grow the campaign without getting on the main stage.” A number of things may follow from his exit: 1. The other “kiddie table” debate participants should exit as well. They have had plenty of time to make their cases, but have failed to do so. Their departures would help the electorate focus on the serious choice before them.

2. If they do not exit, there should nevertheless be no second-tier debates. Without Graham, these debates will be utterly unwatchable. At any rate, there is nothing to be gained from giving noncompetitive candidates free air time.

3. Graham said he has “no intention of endorsing anyone now.” Nevertheless, he and others who drop out should maintain their criticism of Donald Trump, warning the party of his toxicity and mocking (appropriately) his ignorance.

4. Graham donors looking for a new candidate should look for another strong-on-defense candidate. The obvious contenders are New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida.

5. This also frees up Graham supporters, such as Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, to back someone else. A substantial contingent of hawkish Senate Republicans could play a critical role if they get behind a single candidate.

AMENDMENT

6. In the Senate, Graham can play a critical role in focusing on issues, including defense spending, the National Security Agency and other issues that will require presidential candidates to define their views.

7. If a GOP president is elected, Graham would be a valuable cabinet member, most especially as defense secretary.

As a longtime active-duty and reserve member of the Air Force and a key participant in most every major foreign policy decision in the past decade or so, he’d be a strong pick. (Right-wingers who have never liked Graham would be delighted, I imagine, for him to leave the Senate.)

8. With fellow South Carolinian Graham out of the race, this also frees up South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

The Republican may choose to formally endorse or more subtly share her state political operation with one candidate.

As a governor, she is most likely to favor either Bush or Christie.

9. Graham will continue to act as a strong voice of opposition to the Obama-Clinton-Kerry foreign policy. Be it on debacles, such as the Iran deal or the growing chaos in Afghanistan, he can highlight the disastrous consequences of a policy that amounts to retrenchment and appeasement.

10. He can remain a voice of sanity on immigration and on the GOP’s ability to survive and grow in an electorate that bears little resemblance to the country that deep-red-state Republicans and talk-radio barkers imagine it to be.

To the Editor: In my life, I’ve seen few bills introduced that are more illogically conceived than Illinois Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch’s HR 0855, the so-called “Second Amendment – not an individual right” bill.

The preamble to the Bill of Rights states that the framers sought to prevent “misconstruction,” or misunderstanding, of the Constitution. The preamble clearly shows that the Constitution is to be construed, or interpreted, as was originally intended. Our Constitution recognizes two sovereign entities: states and people.

The wording “right of the people” and “reserved to the states” is used throughout the Bill of Rights to show to which group those rights belong. Only a fool would argue that the freedoms protected by the First, Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth amendments belong to anyone but people. The Second Amendment clearly is a “right of the people.”

Perhaps Rep. Welch should read the Federalist Papers,

which go into great detail about the militia, especially, but not limited to, Federalist No. 29. Perhaps I can sum it up.

The Second Amendment and the militia are inextricably intertwined. In English: You can’t have one without the other. The term “well-regulated” in colonial times meant well-trained.

It has nothing to do with government regulation.

It was the understanding of our founding fathers that – in exercising their Second Amendment rights as citizen-soldiers – those citizen-soldiers would be well-trained in the use of arms. It also was intended that those citizen-soldiers could be called up at any time by the legislature as a first line of defense and also in place of a standing army, which the Constitution looks

to prohibit.

It takes many years to acquire marksmanship skills.

It is not something learned in basic training. If there’s one thing that every general in every army all over the world knows, it is that a force of one million American citizen-soldiers could defeat any army in a war. It’s the reason Japan never invaded us in World War II, nor Russia during the Cold War. If the Constitution allows anything, it is the funding of a citizen militia, and Hamilton, in Federalist No. 29, states exactly that. That means range construction and operation, and supplying arms and training to citizens.

Perhaps Rep. Welch could introduce a bill along these lines. I won’t hold my breath.

The applicants were long-standing businesses Eddie Caruso Salon, 2400 E. Main St., and Main Spa, 504 E. Main St., both in St. Charles.

Police Chief Jim Keegan,

who presented the requests, said Eddie Caruso Salon recently changed ownership, and the new owner, Chris Cesario, wanted to include massage offerings.

The city last year revised the St. Charles Municipal Code so that massage parlor licensees are held responsible for violations. At the time, the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission expressed hope that the regulation would give local massage parlors credibility after three prostitution

arrests that year.

Keegan referenced the change Monday.

“This ordinance was enacted about a year ago with great success,” he said.

The St. Charles Liquor Control Commission endorsed the request from Eddie Caruso Salon hours before the City Council met. Keegan said the application was fast-tracked because of the holiday season.

Although Eddie Caruso Salon received unanimous support, the other establish-

ment did not. Fourth Ward Aldermen Steve Gaugel and Jo Krieger voted against Main Spa. At a committee meeting two weeks ago, Gaugel said he was concerned that a massage establishment wanted to open in the same location where a massage therapist previously was charged with prostitution.

“This one bothers me,” Gaugel said at the Dec. 7 meeting.

In response, Keegan said the applicant was different,

and the city can’t hold the licensee accountable until he or she is licensed.

“In some ways, we’re holding the building guilty for someone’s malfeasance,” 3rd Ward Alderman Bill Turner said at the committee meeting.

Keegan said on Dec. 7 that the police department conducts site visits to ensure “every covenant of our ordinance is being followed” and promised aldermen that the location will be policed appropriately.

Centennial will implement marketing and leasing efforts that align with each mall’s commitment to offer a mix of retail, dining, entertainment and special events for the local community, according to the release.

Each individual belongs to a long line of Batavia gems that have been honored over the past 57 years.

Since 1958, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce has been honoring a Batavia Citizen of the Year. If you have the opportunity to sit down with one of these individuals, ask them why they think they were named Citizen of the Year. I bet

they are going to say something like, “I don’t know.” Or, “There must not have been anyone else nominated.” Givers often don’t need or want recognition. They live to serve and try to make other people’s lives better.

This was my second time being a part of the process.

A process that starts with an announcement at the annual Mayor’s Breakfast that the Batavia Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations, and that continues through the announcement of the recipient on Christmas Eve. In many years, the selection is difficult, but rewarding. With the list of nominees growing longer and longer each year, the stories discussed at the selection meeting become more charming.

This year, the selection committee took time to reflect on the fact that we all live in such a wonderful community.

I am encouraged by the next generation of givers in

our community. Through my service in the Batavia Rotary Club, I have been surrounded by members of the Batavia High School Interact Club.

Youth service clubs like Interact (Rotary) and Key Club (Kiwanis) nurture that volunteer spirit in our youth. They are at the Access Toy Drive, running in 5K fundraisers for Marklund, packing food at Feed

My Starving Children – the list goes on and on. Imagine how busy their lives are while they still find the time and motivation to give back to their community. Which one of them will be the Citizen of the Year in 2050? There is no way of knowing that now, but I am sure glad we are thinking about it.

How can you give back in 2016? Let’s all make resolutions to give more through service to our community. I promise, you will not regret it.

AURORA – Fox Valley Mall in Aurora was one of five regional malls purchased for $1.1 billion by Centennial Real Estate Company, Montgomery Street Partners and USAA Real Estate Company, from Westfield Corp., the company announced.

Myhre bros. have different personalities, but share passion for swimming

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – Will Myhre did not think swimming was going to be the sport he made an impact in during high school when he was young.

He preferred baseball over anything, but as is often the case when someone has an older brother, they like to do what their older brother does.

Will’s brother, Joe, has been a standout swimmer on the St. Charles North boys team for the past three years, and it’s because of Joe that Will is now not only a teammate of Joe’s, but also is contributing as a freshman at the varsity level.

“I was always into baseball and got into swimming because Joe did it,” Will said.

“I look up to him a lot and it definitely makes it more fun to be out there together. It also makes it easier because I knew someone on the team before the season, and yeah, it’s cool to have him there.”

As much as the two share a similar passion for swimming, they couldn’t have any more opposite personalities.

Joe, a senior, leads by example and is what coach Rob Rooney referred to as a “quiet leader.” Will, on the other hand, has much more of an outgoing personality, which might strike you as unusual for a freshman on varsity level. In fact, it’s usually quite the opposite.

“He’s more loud sometimes,” Joe said of his brother with a laugh. “I’m much more quiet, but sometimes I think that makes us bring out the best in each other.

Whether I’m quiet or not, we like to push each other every day in practice or at meets.

But yeah, we definitely have different personalities.”

St. Charles North freshman boys swimmer Will Myhre, competing Saturday in the 200-yard individual medley at the Neuqua Valley Invite, has credited the presence of his older brother, Joe, for a surge in confidence.

(1:00.69) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:01.39). Joe kept his usual strong form with first- and second-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle, respectively.

Rooney said he thinks it has obviously been a much smoother transition for Will to have his brother to show him the ins and outs of high school swimming compared to the club level, but it also has been a positive thing for him as a coach.

It often takes coaches some time to get to know freshmen – with it being their first year coaching them – but Rooney said because of Joe, it’s made

easier for him.

“It’s definitely helped me out tremendously,” Rooney said. “I’ve been able to get a good feel for who he is because Joe is there. I do think having his brother there has been huge for him, though.”

As much as Will looks up to Joe and probably hopes to accomplish a lot of the same things Joe has in his time on varsity, Rooney said he gets a glimpse that he doesn’t want to be known as the Iowa-bound “Joe Myhre’s younger brother.”

“Will is a character. He’s got quite the personality,” Rooney said. “I think he defi-

nitely respects his brother so much that he wants to follow in his footsteps, but he wants to go to his own beat.

He wants to be known as Will Myhre, you know. So I think he’s balancing that very well.”

Joe has picked up on those little things that Will might try to do in being his own swimmer.

“Whenever we’re at meets, he does well when he gets himself in his own little zone,” Joe said. “He doesn’t set the team aside or anything, but he’s been doing really well when he gets himself focused.”

Both Rooney and Joe have been extremely happy with how Will has performed in the early stages of the season.

Will said he definitely sees the high school swimming scene as much different than the age group level, but is trying to simplify things by taking each race one at a time as his first year begins to hit its stride.

“Every race is a process,” Will said. “It’s good to have Joe to ask questions or look to for advice, but I kind of have to find my way and get comfortable. I definitely look to improve each time I’m out there.”

Rebounding focus, free throws pay dividends in tournament win

Saints coach Lori Drumtra has harped on improved rebounding, and players took note. Asked which areas East has augmented most since the season-opening Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament – a 1-4 run that included a ninepoint loss to the host Saxons – Vitkus delivered no surprises in her answer.

“Rebounding and passing the ball around to everyone and looking for open people everywhere,” she said. “It’s such a big improvement from Thanksgiving.”

Palatine coach Mark Johnson ultimately bemoaned that the Saints’ size “finally caught up to us.” It was reflected in the fouling, although the Saints gave the Pirates opportunities at the line, too.

“We were trying to be scrappy, and just a little bit out of position,” Johnson said.

Porrata drilled separate 3s in a 36-second span midway through the second quarter to provide a 13-11 lead, but the Saints stayed patient and responded. Kelly Rinker added eight points for East, which is eager for a second crack at Schaumburg.

WHEATON – Finger wiggling, monotone ohhing and even cries of “AIR BALL!” enjoyed an apparent holiday hiatus Monday morning.

Would-be free throw aides and impediments were nowhere to be seen or heard as the St. Charles East girls basketball team opened Wheaton North Falcon Classic play against Palatine.

No complaints from the Saints. They shoot free throws in relative silence at the end of each practice, and that diligence showed in a 54-43 victory against the Pirates. East finished 27 of 34 from the line, with double-figure scorers Sara Rosenfeldt (19 points) and Sam Munroe (12) both attempting at least nine free throws in peace.

“In atmospheres when you play big schools that are your rivals, everyone is yelling,” said Rosenfeldt, a sophomore forward. “So, it’s kind of more calm.”

East (5-7) advanced to today’s second round against Schaumburg with slightly less subtlety.

Palatine (4-9) struggled to defend the size of the 5-foot-10 Rosenfeldt and 6-foot senior Hannah Vitkus, and fouls quickly mounted up.

The Pirates, sticking around behind the long-range shooting of freshman Elena Porrata (14 points), put the Saints in the second-half bonus with 12.2 seconds remaining in the third quarter. East enhanced its attack-first outlook and went from there, enjoying a 37-17 edge on the boards en route to a comfortable victory.

NOTEWORTHY Surging Vikings ‘feel really good’

Three sophomores, one junior and one senior comprised Geneva’s starting lineup in Friday’s road rout of Batavia.

Two sophomores – guards Stephanie Hart and Margaret Whitley – and the junior, post Grace Loberg, started last season, providing a sound nucleus for the Vikings during their 7-1 start.

“We feel really good,” Hart said. “I mean, yeah, we lost a lot of key players last year, but I think a lot of kids this year are stepping up and filling those positions, and we’re having a lot of good teamwork.”

Sophomore reserve guard Bri Borkowicz fit the bill against the Bulldogs, scoring 12 points, including eight in the first 1:14 of a tide-turning second quarter. Borkowicz missed the first four weeks of the season with a hairline

fracture in her kneecap and quickly made an impact in her first varsity minutes.

A long-distance threat who also can attack the basket, Borkowicz provides an insurance policy when Hart, Whitley or fellow starting sophomore guard Maddy Yelle need a breather.

“Exactly what she did [Friday],” Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said. “To come off the bench, we don’t want to miss anything. When she comes in the game, she provides exactly what was on the floor. She played great.”

“It was a really big comeback game for her,” added Hart. “It was really great to see her hitting those 3s.”

Borkowicz connected on a pair of treys and later added a three-point play. The Vikings are excited for her to get another week of practice under her belt before the team’s next game, Saturday’s Montini tournament opener

against Evanston.

“It prepares us for the season coming up, so we like the tournaments a lot,” Hart said.

‘Deep’ Bulldogs respond Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen treated the Geneva loss with a blend of concern and good humor.

There was potential relief in knowing Batavia played less than 24 hours later, facing host Marian Catholic in its tournament championship game.

The Bulldogs responded with a 53-42 victory behind tournament MVP Hannah Frazier, who closed Batavia’s four-game run with a 35-point, seven-rebound effort. Freshman post Geddy Rerko also shined, earning a spot on the all-tournament team.

“We have 16 people on our team,” guard Mackenzie Foster said, “and 16 people can play. … We can go so deep,

and everyone is contributing this year, and I think that it helps out a lot.”

Batavia is idle until Saturday, when it opens Montini tournament play against Kenwood.

“We can definitely keep getting better and take on lots of teams,” Foster said.

Knights keep rolling

Kaneland outscored Geneseo and Sandwich by a combined score of 84-54 Saturday, sweeping a pair of matinées at the Ottawa tournament to improve to 9-1. Camri Conley (18 total points) and Vanessa Gould (17) helped boost the balanced Knights, who are clicking up and down the program.

The Kaneland freshman team thumped Morris, 50-15, last week to moved to 9-0.

But to not examine the big picture would be a disservice.

The Kings are a potential foe in the 2016 Blackhawk Cup state tournament that begins in March.

“The last time we played these guys in October, they beat us, 6-0, and outshot us by a 2-1 margin,” Gabrielsen said. “So there was improvement (Saturday). It shows we can skate with these guys. It’s just mentally we have to be prepared to play a top 10 team like this.”

The Hawks lost whatever mental edge they had beginning at the 9:39 mark of the second period, when the

Kings scored the first of their three unanswered goals. The Kings made it 2-1 when Scott Pfaff scored off a centering pass from Jaret Pernice. A Matteo Garwacki power play goal followed at the 5:48 mark before Pfaff closed the scoring with a goal with 4:22 left in the period.

“I think we were good in the offensive zone in the third period,” Gadow said.

“We just kind of needed that throughout the whole game.

I think overall, our passing was better (Saturday). We were just putting pucks too close to their net in the second. I think once we backed to the puck away from their goalie, we started to play better offensively.”

The Hawks will not return to action until Jan. 2, when they face the combined team of Conant/Hoffman Estates/ Schaumburg/Fremd at 9 p.m. at West Meadows Ice Arena in Rolling Meadows.

BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Thunder picked up a franchise-record sixth consecutive win Saturday in a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Steel at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Four different Thunder players scored to send the Steel to their fourth straight loss entering the USHL’s holiday break.

Chicago (10-14-2-2, 24 points) surrendered the first goal for a fifth successive game.

Blake Gober received an outlet pass, moved into the slot and bounced a shot past Steel goaltender John Lethemon nearly halfway through the first period. The goal was initially disallowed due to goaltender interference, but the officials changed the call as the contact was ruled to be the fault of Chicago’s defense.

In the second period, Steel right wing Bobby Hampton tallied his first USHL goal to cut Bloomington’s lead to 201. Immediately following an offensive zone faceoff win by

Marc Johnstone, Alex Frye fed Ruslan Rakhmatov for a point shot that Hampton redirected past Thunder netminder Hayden Lavigne at 8:03.

The win was Bloomington’s first this season by more than one goal. All but one of Chicago’s 10 wins this season have been multi-goal victories.

The Steel will continue their seasonlong, 10-game road trip Dec. 29 with a visit to Team USA in Plymouth, Michigan. 18 Moderate exercise can help

prevent sudden cardiac arrest Dear Dr. K: My wife saw something on the news about a man who died of sudden cardiac arrest while jogging. Now she doesn’t want me to exercise. I’d really love to get my running shoes back on. What can I tell her to ease her worries?

Dear Reader: I read your letter as I was cooling off after exercising. So your question is timely. Your wife’s concerns are understandable, but probably misguided.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Aaron L. Baggish, the associate director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. He confirmed what I thought I knew.

Sudden cardiac arrest is caused by a lethal type of irregular heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. The lethal rhythm causes the heart to stop pumping blood – it just sort of quivers. If that rhythm is not immediately reversed – such as by a defibrillator machine – it results in death.

Sudden cardiac arrest can occur in a person with or without known heart disease. Probably the most common cause is atherosclerosis of the arteries of the heart, which reduces the blood supply to some of the heart muscle.

The most important point to make is regular, moderate-intensity exercise is actually the best way to prevent sudden cardiac arrest. There is solid scientific evidence people who exercise regularly are less likely to develop cardiac arrest. Even people with heart disease who go through a carefully supervised exercise program are less likely to have a cardiac arrest.

Here’s what can be confusing: In all people, a cardiac arrest is more likely to occur when the heart is working hard than when it’s not. So, suppose you exercise for 30 minutes each day. That

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff means you don’t exercise for the remaining 1,410 minutes in that day. Your risk of cardiac arrest per minute is greater while you exercise.

Nevertheless, a recent study found exercise-related heart deaths are quite rare; they account for just 5 percent of sudden cardiac arrest cases. In the study, researchers reviewed 1,247 cases of sudden cardiac arrest in middle-aged men and women over a period of 11 years. Of these, only 63 cases occurred during exercise. Most occurred in men, and most of these men were jogging, playing basketball or cycling.

In the majority of cases, the cardiac arrest didn’t come out of nowhere. Two-thirds of the people who had cardiac arrest had known heart disease. And nearly onethird of them had experienced typical cardiovascular symptoms during the week before the sudden cardiac arrest, including chest pain and breathlessness.

This study offers two points of reassurance.

First, exercise-related cardiac arrest is rare.

The second important message is heart disease often gives warning signs.

Heed this message. If you feel any chest pain during exercise, have difficulty breathing or even feel more drained than usual, stop and call a doctor for advice.

So if your doctor, who knows your medical condition, agrees, tell your wife regular exercise will reduce your risk of sudden death during your remaining years together.

My advice is to say nothing about seeing him at the mall.

He continues to date you, so it’s obvious he likes you very much. I’d leave it that way. But if you can’t, when you feel the time is right, ask him if he is dating someone else now and see what happens.

Maybe you didn’t “chicken out” when you failed to confront him at the mall. Instead, you simply exercised reason and good sense. Let’s hope so.

Dear Abby: I have been a nurse for 35 years, and over time, I have noticed a decline in simple courtesy from people who visit friends or relatives in the hospital. Several things visitors should keep in mind: 1. If you don’t know what room the patient has been assigned, ask. Don’t wander in and out of rooms until you find the right one.

2. Be prepared to give the first and last names of the patient when asking for directions.

3. Abide by the visiting hours and the number of persons allowed into a patient’s room at one time.

Remember, patients need dedicated time for treatments and procedures.

4. Do not bring small children to the hospital unless they are visiting their parent or sibling. You needlessly place them at risk by exposing them to infections.

5. Make sure any food you bring to the patient is allowed by the physician.

6. Never question the staff for information regarding the patient’s diagnosis or condition. It is against the law for a health care provider to divulge patient information to an unauthorized individual. Ask the patient.

7. Get permission before plugging in your cellphone charger.

8. When taking the elevator, use public elevators. And when the doors open, stand back and allow the occupants to safely step out before entering. – Pa-
