J

ust one short hour from the hustle and bustle of the Chicago metropolitan area is an agricultural gem. Heritage Prairie Farm is a Certified Organic Farm located in Elburn. Small in comparison to many farms, Heritage Prairie nevertheless boasts an enormous heart, as it focuses on its ties to the greater community. One such outreach initiative, now in its 11th year, is the Annual Artisan Craft and Food Fair. This year’s event will be held on November 9th and 10th at Heritage Prairie Farm.

The original Artisan Craft and Food Fair, which was held in 2008 in the farmhouse, included six vendors and was established to support local businesses. Emily Cudworth, the marketing coordinator, says that each year, the event has grown in vendor participation as well as community popularity. “By the fourth year, we moved outside to the greenhouse and barn, and it kept growing from there.

It moved to tent space about three years ago. This year, we’ll probably

be at maximum capacity with 50-55 vendors. A few vendors, such as Bonnie’s Garden Art and Mary’s Wholesome Living, have been with

Cudworth says that the uniqueness of the venue is a tremendous draw. “So often craft fairs are held in warehouse spaces. The fact that this takes place on a farm is exciting. We have beautiful grounds that people walk

Heritage Prairie Farm was first launched in 2006, with a focus on its beekeeping and farming. In 2008, the Farm starting hosting outside events including weddings, parties, and themed farm dinners. In 2014, Heritage Prairie Farms became USDA Certified Organic. The four-season Farm grows seasonal and heirloom crops including greens, beets, kohlrabi, zucchini, microgreens, and more. The Farm also has raw honey, chickens providing fresh eggs, and pigs providing pork products. Items from Heritage Prairie Farm are sold at its on-site Farm Store, as well as through area French Markets and Whole Foods stores, and served at local hotels and restaurants.

The 11th Annual Artisan Craft and Food Fair will be held on Saturday, November 9th from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Sunday, November 10th from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Heritage Prairie Farm is located at 2N308 Brundige Road in Elburn.

Even though summer is beginning to fade and the kids are heading back to school, there’s a burst of fall season events on tap to attend. dedly local  FESTIVAL OF THE WINE Kick off the season by savoring the flavor of Geneva during the popular Festival of the Vine, which runs September 6-8 at Fourth and State Streets in the downtown district. This autumn harvest celebration offers attendees the perfect pairings of food and wine.  BATAVIA MAIN STREET OKTOBERFEST The Oktoberfest season begins in full swing with the annual Batavia Main Street Oktoberfest on September 2729 on North River Street in downtown Batavia.  MARMION OKTOBERFEST CELEBRATION The Oktoberfest season continues on a roll with Marmion Academy’s annual Marmion Oktoberfest Celebration on September 28 starting at 5:30 p.m. The Marmion campus is located just outside the Battaglia Center at 1000 Butterfield Road in Aurora. WILDWOOD brings world view to the table in Geneva

A

fter spending nearly three decades traveling in the corporate world, Patrick Neary was ready for a new adventure. “Dining out most nights, I wanted to take those experiences - both good and bad - and offer locally what I believed to be the most welcoming dining experience,” he said. And Neary has successfully done just that with Wildwood, the upscale American restaurant he opened more than 13 years ago in Dodson Place on Geneva's Third Street. Cuisine at the full-service lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch establishment includes an extensive menu of grilled steaks and fresh seafood complemented by special seasonal offerings. “And while other fine dining establishments offer a la carte pricing that may be somewhat deceiving – with extravagant extra charge for salads and side dishes – Wildwood has consistently offered guests a choice of salad with all dinner entrees and a choice of side dish with most steaks, chops and poultry entrees,” Neary said. “No surprises or extravagant pricing here.”

Guests looking to pair their meal with a glass of wine won’t be disappointed. For nine consecutive years, the restaurant’s wine list has received the Wine Spectator’s Award of

Excellence, a feat not achieved by any other restaurant in the Fox Valley. “Whether by the glass or by the bottle, we have approachable California, Washington, Oregon and

international wines that pair nicely with our menu offerings and respond to a broad array of guest preferences,” Neary said. Wildwood patrons can eat and drink in Wildwood’s dining room, separate lounge, or one of two outdoor patios. The restaurant has also become a destination venue for both corporate and family events.

Neary can attest the industry is not always an easy one. “We attempt to just stay the course and ride out challenges rather than let them define who we are and what we do,” he said.

AN EASY CHOICE FOR A DELICIOUS MEAL

F

rom what was a dream, to being on Chicago’s Best TV, all in just three years.

It has been quite a ride for Chris Deane and his staff. Their commitments to quality and homemade taste have paid off. Situated on the far south end of Geneva’s main shopping street – Third Street - they have been quietly building a base of regular loyal customers over the past years. It feels like a small town hangout with most of the original staff greeting regulars and newcomers alike. Deane can almost always be found behind the counter making the sandwiches and joking with the customers.

Staffed with two chefs, cooking up Deane’s own family recipes, and lots of input from the rest of the staff, Deane’s is always experimenting with new concepts to go along with the tried and true. Although famous for the

fresh made roast beef sandwich, many regulars swear by the house smoked chicken salad, his old school recipe for porchetta or one of the menu’s many grilled cheeses. And don’t forget the addictive brownies. People have been known to make an hour-long trip just to stock up!

What originally was a request of his wife and family, Deane’s array of frozen meals to go has grown exponentially.

Crafted the same way – clean label, homemade – they offer regular and vegetarian options such as chicken pot pie with a homemade crust, macaroni and cheese and killer black bean enchiladas. Customers often are seen stacking up several on the counter to stock up their freezers for those busy nights.

Many people’s favorite part of visiting Deane’s Market & Deli is the eclectic collection of housewares, cheeses

and other foods at the front of the restaurant. The stock always is changing and you never know what you will find. Deane’s stocks as much local product as possible, along with an assortment of high quality imports.

It’s not necessarily a trend but the concept is only reaching the Midwest now and we’re excited to be a part of that,” Ferrer says. “Our approach is always making everything fresh and ready to order - we mix our spices in house for the main boil and all sauces are made to order for each patron. We intend to keep our featured seafood boil menu the same and add seasonal items that we switch out with the changing trends and season.

“We’re looking to provide an experience that engages more than just your taste buds, and have fun in the process,” Ferrer says.

And you can take the fun, and the flavor home with you…thanks to carryout options, and catering specials.

“We started experimenting and developing recipes at home about 10 years ago and finally took a leap of faith to open in 2018,” he says. “We imagined a restaurant where patrons can come in and enjoy a delicious meal together and feel like they are at home.

Batavia is a great city and our dining concept was unique to the area.”

And with a modus operandi of “faith, food, and service,” the folks at Crabby Boil hope to create a unique and one-of-a-kind dining experience with Crabby Boil.

“I’ve always wanted to start my own business and make a difference in my surrounding community. Being able to serve the community and support the high school and other organizations in the area has been a highlight.

“My wife and I want to set a good example to our children,” he explains “Your job should be more than self serving, but should also help others and should also be something that you enjoy and are excited about. I wanted to show my kids that even though it’s scary you should take a chance if it’s something that you believe in.”

So Ferrer took the leap from a corporate job, to pursue happiness and the chance to make a difference.

“We love serving others and being a part of this community and hope to do so for many years to come,” he says.

And in those coming years, Ferrer hopes Crabby Boil can grow, add

delivery, and develop different weeknight specials, potentially adding a specialty mix drink, and maybe something fun like an annual eating contest.

Beyond the basics, he hopes to create, or partner with non-for-profit organizations, or host events that would benefit communities and groups in need. A second location isn’t out of the question, either.

“We love cooking, eating, and serving our seafood boils to friends and family and we were excited to be able to introduce others to the taste and concept that we’ve loved for already a decade,” he says.

Shopping list For today’s families, grocery choice is as much about the store as the item

“Ima Workingmom” is a fake name, but her grocery shopping routine is very real.

Weekly grocery shopping for someone like Workingmom definitely isn’t a one-stop haul every Saturday morning like she remembers it when she was a child.

Grocery shopping has become an increasingly frequent occurrence, but not necessarily one Workingmom dreads. Instead of one-stop shopping, she’ll likely purchase groceries at several stores.

For meat and fish, she might visit Josef’s in Geneva, Blue Goose Market in St. Charles, or Ream’s Market in Elburn.

For specialty items like gourmet olive oils and spices, she drops in to Olive Mill in Geneva while also sampling some items and collecting new recipes and ideas.

For fresh fruit and vegetables there are Saturday community farmers markets. Plus, once a month or so she may even stop into Costco to stock up the pantry with non-perishables.

While not everyone follows Workingmom’s routine, many

are shopping like her, becoming increasingly choosy about quality, price and selection, and playing favorites at an array of locations, instead of the traditional supermarket.

“There is a general movement to get out of the giant mega marts and to run out to places three times a week and get something fresh,” says Chris Faber, former executive director for Batavia Main Street’s Farmers’ Market.

“It’s challenging, because everyone is busy with work and their life’s schedule, but I often hear from people who are going

According to the most recent study by the Food Marketing Institute, people are grocery shopping more, averaging 1.6 trips to the store per week. They’re going to specific stores for specific items and looking for quality with an emphasis on fresh food. The result is the purchase of less frozen items and no real need to re-stock the pantry with nonperishable canned goods and boxed items every week.

Today you can also find e-commerce and home delivery services, and rise in functional foods/natural wellness items, all pulling customers who

weigh not only cost, convenience, loyalty and quality but also the pursuit of new shopping and food experiences.

“The experience is what we are selling here by far,” says Debbie O’Connell, owner of the Olive Mill, which specializes in small batch and artisan extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars. “We’re not like a normal grocery store. We truly are an experience where you can come in and taste and sample and interact.

The experience is kind of our little niche, and you can do it at anytime.”

Those looking for a unique idea for dinner or a way to tweak a recipe or get a new one often can find that

“We’re always here for any questions they may have and can help them when they’re looking for something different to do for dinner,” O’Connell says. “We also draw a lot of healthconscious people looking to add something to their diet.”

Those looking to add something to their shopping experience, namely a glass of wine, can find it at Blue Goose now that the 91-year-old store has debuted its wine bar. They can take a load off their feet and sit down and enjoy a glass of wine or take it around the store with them as they do their shopping.

“The wine bar is just one way for

us to show our expertise, and also create a community gathering place,” says Paul Lencioni, president and CEO of Blue Goose. “How many places are creating a spot where you can slow down for a second and have a conversation with someone?

It’s not just about the wine, it’s about earning trust and creating experiences around the store.”

A staple in downtown St. Charles since before most residents were born, Blue Goose, which began as a fruit stand, is a fully stocked store with a great reputation for its bakery, meat and produce departments.

“We’re a great everyday store that does special things,” Lencioni says.

For almost 25 years now, Batavians and those in neighboring communities have shopped for a variety of fresh items from over 30 regular vendors who are selling vegetables, fruit, eggs, cheese, meat, herbs and more at the Batavia Farmers’ Market while supporting local businesses and having a good time while doing so.

“I don’t know anyone who likes grocery shopping,” Faber says. “It’s a terrible job, but we have to do it, and a farmers’ market is fun. We create an experience where they can enjoy a coffee and a roll and walk around, seeing their neighbors and getting some food, and people love seeing where their food is coming from.”

Faber, who read an article about how people who attend art galleries are three times more likely to purchase art if they talk to the artist, compared it to the experience of buying fresh produce from the farmer who grew it.

“It’s kind of the same thing here,” Faber said. “They want to come out and have an experience and it’s something the whole family can enjoy. It’s far more enjoyable for the

kids than sitting in a cart.”

Butcher shops and meat markets aren’t anything new, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t evolved into something more today, as is the case with Ream’s Meat Market, a fixture in Elburn since 1954.

“Our customers are looking for top quality and we offer prime cuts of meat, fresh, and nothing is frozen here,” Falcone says. “Everything is shipped to us fresh. And we’ve got fresh fish like Chilean sea bass and salmon from Norway. This isn’t grocery store quality, this is the real McCoy. And that’s the difference.”

“We’re a community market and the world is moving fast, so we have to take care of people,” Lencioni says.

“Words are cheap these days and the community doesn’t owe me anything, I owe them.”

“Our store is doing a lot of pre-made stuff with brisket and pulled pork and all the deli stuff made from scratch,” says co-owner Janelle Ream. “A lot of it is grab it and go and a lot of our other items are super easy to make, like the stuffed pork chops… and fajita mix that all you need to do is sauté.”

nyone curious about homemade wines, beers, meads and ciders will want to check out herbalist Amber Shehan’s recently released “Artisanal Small-Batch Brewing” (Page Street Publishing).

This approachable volume offers the perfect gateway for do-it-yourselfers to experience firsthand the joys of making homebrew.

As Shehan puts it in the book’s introduction: Hand-crafted brews are “so much more alive, nuanced and unique than the mass-produced wine and beers that I was familiar with.”

She adds that small batches not only save time but offer a way to experiment with flavor and techniques without the worry of wasting money.

Newcomers to brewing will need to get familiar with required equipment, ingredients and techniques on how to proceed.

Preparations likely will include a visit to a brewers’ supply shop or at the very least a search online for an Internet site to source such items as a digital scale, fermenter (glass jug and brew bucket), a lidded one- or two-gallon stockpot, bung and air lock, sanitizer and straining bags, among others, including yeast and flavoring agents.

Shehan also provides master recipes for basic mead, basic cider, fruit wine and American pilsner. • 1 cup pine nuts or walnuts, divided • 2 Tablespoons olive oil (not extravirgin) • 8 garlic cloves, coarsely chopped • 2 cups tightly packed fresh basil leaves (from 2 to 3 large bunches), washed and dried • 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more as needed • 2 Tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan, Romano or Asiago cheese, divided • Kosher salt, as needed

Combine the basil, the garlic with oil, the 1 cup of extra-virgin olive oil, half of the toasted nuts, the lemon juice and ½ cup of the grated cheese in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the metal blade attachment (or in a high-powered blender). Process the ingredients until smooth, adding more oil if necessary, and

transfer the mixture to a bowl. It should be runny and thin, not thick and stiff.

Slowly add the remaining pine nuts and the remaining ½ cup of cheese, stopping before the pesto becomes too thick; it should be thin enough to drizzle. If it is too thick, whisk in a little more oil; if too thin, add more grated cheese. Taste the pesto. If it is undersalted (it probably won’t be) add either some salt or a little more cheese.

Transfer the pesto to an airtight container, seal tightly and store in the refrigerator for about 1 week. Be aware that it will begin to lose some of its bright color the longer it sits.

In the same skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. When the oil is very hot but not smoking, turn off the heat, add the chopped garlic and stir for about 5 seconds. (The garlic does not need to be browned; the quick cooking is merely to take away the “burn” from the garlic and release its flavor.) he office is celebrating 45 years in business in 2019, and the practice continues to grow every year, seeing adolescents through senior citizens from all over the Chicago area. All 13 of the Fox Valley Orthopedics surgeons specialize in different areas of orthopedics; from hand/wrist, sports medicine, spine, total joints and foot/ankle to give patients the expert care they need for optimal outcomes.

The practice serves about 9,000 new patients every year, performing almost 19,000 procedures ranging from minor surgeries to total joint replacements. Drs. Eugene Wittenstrom and Merle Denker founded Fox Valley Orthopedics in St. Charles in 1974, as high school athletic programs grew while seniors heading into retirement needing more specialized care.

The practice focused on advanced orthopedic treatments and quality patient care, becoming the first in the area to perform complex operations, including ACL reconstruction and total joint replacements.

We all have expert training in our fields,” Mehta explains. “I make sure the patient understands the injury and I give them a spectrum of care—everything from aggressive to conservative treatments. I tell them honestly what I would do if it were my family. There are always options.”

The doctors also remain up-to-date on the latest advances in orthopedics through continuing education, using the latest research to give their patients the best care possible.

“Education is very important. The doctors educate patients on the treatment and about preventative measures,” Mathews says. “They’re familiar with the latest procedures and the most innovative techniques. One of the staff doctors attends every high school game, making sure the studentathletes receive immediate care if they suffer an injury. I love the Meditteranean diet. It’s loaded with lower carbohydrates and olive oil, which helps out that heart. But the great thing is that fresh zing of lemon flavor, and I found that recently at Just Kabobs in St. Charles.

First I tried the dipping tray sauces. The tzatziki, which is Greek yogurt packed with flavor. I could eat a whole tray myself! Then a little taste of spicy feta spread with a punch of flavor really gets those taste buds dancing.

For the main course, I love the shrimp kabobs. I usually get three skewers. The Greek oregano, lemon, salt and pepper – with the careful cooking that Just Kabobs gives over the grill – makes you feel like you are in the Greek Isles looking at the Aegean sea.

And just to sneak in a few carbs, I save mine for those tasty delightful oven roasted Greek potatoes. One slice will take your taste buds over the sea again to the Greek Islands while the rest of you remains right here in St. Charles. The beauty is that when you leave, you have stayed true to your healthy diet, but taken a trip that just keeps on telling you to come back. important? I try to eat well, but should I check?

A: Cholesterol screenings in a fasting state are important like breast self exams and colonoscopies for women.

Q: When should I get a colon cancer screening?

A: Colon cancer screening is for both men and women.

Q: Ulcerative Colitis therapies are important for me as my disease is troubled by repeat use of steroids.

What do you suggest?

Yes usage of steroids multiple times can result in bone mineral loss, cataracts, weight gain, irritability and other effects. Dear Jane: Great question. Colon cancer can affect anyone, regardless of family history. Everyone over age 45 should get a colonoscopy. If you have family history you should start at age 40 or 10 to 15 years before the youngest relative with a problem. Screening helps reduce risk.

Dr. Mullick, I’ve got bloating and gas. Sometimes I have diarrhea or nausea after I eat. Could I have food allergies?

My doctor said it’s IBS (irritable bowel). Kristen Dear Kristen: Yes, food intolerances to lactose, sucrose and fructose are common, so you may need to avoid those. We have tests in the office for that. The symptoms of IBS and food allergies are often similar, so testing for food allergies is reasonable. We can test for that, too. We have helped many patients diagnosed with food allergies, so it’s not all IBS.

While we all know running is good for our health, some races make the journey more rewarding. The finish line is even sweeter when there is a chocolate treat, glass of red wine or promise of a fresh bratwurst sandwich waiting to be enjoyed. Alternatives to Joint Replacement

Joint replacement is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States, and the number of procedures performed each year continues to grow at a staggering rate.While total joint replacement may be the right choice for many people, joint preservation is helping many others, especially younger patients, avoid or delay the procedure.

 WHEN TO SEEK HELP Although your body has 360 joints, the hip and the knee bear the most load when you walk, run and do other forms of physical activity.

That’s why the hip and knee are most often associated with painful arthritis and are the most commonly replaced joints.

Lead by co-directors Brian Chilelli, MD, and Sanjeev Bhatia, MD, the Northwestern Medicine Hip and Knee Joint Preservation Center helps patients seeking alternative options.

Dr. Bhatia, an orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon, suggests seeking help if you experience recurring pain in either joint. “Joints are built for the long haul, but there are certain features of the anatomy that can make you more prone to developing cartilage injury, a precursor to arthritis,” he says. While you may not know you have these underlying features, Dr. Bhatia says you will likely be able to sense something based on symptoms.

“Typically for the hip, you’ll

experience pain in the front part of the hip that radiates through the groin. This will be particularly noticable with twisting activities of the leg,” he says. As for the knee, having excessively bow-legged or misaligned joints may make you more prone to damage. You may overload to one side of the knee, which can lead to early cartilage wear.  NONSURGICAL TECHNIQUES FOR JOINT PRESERVATION Joint preservation is an emerging field that involves innovative ways to restore motion while reducing pain and ongoing damage in the joint.

medications and physical therapy. If symptoms don’t improve, injections in the joint may help decrease inflammation and provide lubrication to the impacted areas.

“People don’t realize a joint is a living entity. An injury causes inflammation, which can chemically degrade the existing cartilage.

When we take away inflammatory factors, that’s what helps protect the cartilage.”

“There’s no substitute for the original joint you’re born with,” Dr. Bhatia says. “As a field, we’ve gotten really good at joint replacement, and it’s great for the right patient. But for a younger patient, in particular, the best medicine is prevention.”

 MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY FOR JOINT PRESERVATION If nonoperative techniques don’t bring relief, minimally invasive surgery may be an option.

Procedures include advanced hip arthroscopy for hip impingement and labral tears, cartilage restoration, meniscus repair and transplantation, and osteotomy techniques for both the hip and knee.

tears and accelerated hip cartilage damage through a process called femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), one of the leading causes of hip arthritis in the United States. “This procedure has been revolutionary,” Dr. Bhatia says. “There are many conditions we can treat through this minimally invasive surgery, and relatively quickly.”

For knees, arthroscopic debridement can smooth out loose fragments or flaps for patients suffering from mechanical pain in the knee. If accelerated knee cartilage damage is caused by malalignment, an osteotomy procedure can also be performed to realign the joint. In this procedure, the bone is realigned to prevent accelerated damage.

For those with cartilage damage, new treatments are also emerging. “There are newer agents that we can use to inject into the hip and knee that may be safer for alleviating pain, with little to no risk for complications,” Dr. Bhatia says.

This includes a technique that uses matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI) to restore knee cartilage. According to Dr. Bhatia, the first step in MACI involves taking a sample of

the patient’s cartilage from a non-weightbearing part of the knee. The tissue is sent to a lab, where cells are embedded in a special collagen membrane that promotes tissue growth. During surgery, the new tissue, called the MACI membrane, is trimmed to the desired size and shape, and secured to the bone.  STAY ACTIVE, LONGER As the number of joint replacement surgeries continues to grow, Northwestern Medicine Hip and Knee Joint Preservation Center is serving a growing number of patients seeking alternative options. “Joint replacement produces outstanding results for people,” Dr. Bhatia says. “But if we can help individuals avoid joint replacement, or delay it, it helps keep them more active in their life. That’s what we’re trying to achieve.”

Marks 10 years in Batavia

 Public celebration set for September 13

W

ater Street Studios celebrates its 10th anniversary this September, marking a decade that has fueled the careers of thousands of artists and enlightened, entertained and educated hundreds of thousands of people throughout the area.

It all began as a shared vision of a group of interested community members, talented artists, a generous property owner and the City of Batavia in 2007. This vision turned into a plan a year later when the Batavia Artists Association (BAA) and Water Street Studios was founded, construction within an historic Batavia building began and then opened to the public in 2009.

“The beauty of Water Street Studios is how it is truly a community-driven cultural organization, says co-founder, Joi Austin (Cuartero). “Helping to create the organization gave me a life experience where I found my career path and I made lifelong friends. Water Street literally shaped my life, professionally and personally.”

Austin Dempsey, President of Batavia Enterprises Inc., and a foundational supporter of the organization, calls Water Street an, “amazing cultural asset.”

“This organization empowers artists to achieve higher levels of success and engagement by

providing resources and a facility that inspires creative endeavors,” he says. “The education of the next generation of American artists is vitally important to a well-rounded society and Water Street Studios is at the front line of making sure that art and personal expression are supported and encouraged in our community.”

Today, Water Street Studios provides the region with art classes, artist studios, gallery exhibitions, free programs for under-resourced families and schools, events in our historic venue, and more.

In 2016, Water Street Studios launched their STEAM program, “Ripple Effect,” to serve third through fifth graders in the community by integrating the arts into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning. The program is generously support by the Dunham Fund.

“It transforms STEM learning into STEAM learning by integrating the arts into the academic curriculum, making the arts accessible to students across the Fox Valley area,” Lindsay Cochrane, Program Director at the Dunham Fund, says.

To commemorate its 10th Anniversary and celebrate its community-focused mission, Water Street Studios is pairing 10 local nonprofits with 10 artists in the community who will create murals for each nonprofit. These murals will be displayed in the alley leading up to the entrance of Water

Street’s building. This project, called “Activate the Alley” is generously funded by the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley.

Additionally, Water Street is hosting a 10-year anniversary celebration at 6 p.m. September 13.

The night will feature a silent art auction, special guests, a cash bar, open artist studios, a new art exhibition featuring artist members and invited artists, and more. This event is free, open to the public, and for all ages.

As the organization prepares to celebrate its last 10 years, it is also looking into the future to envision what greater things can be built on its foundation of collaboration over competition, using the arts to connect people to something bigger than themselves.

“My hope is that Water Street Studios continues to thrive and grow by serving the needs of our community through the arts, Current Board President Jessica Breugelmans shares. “I’m thrilled by the many pARTnerships formed in support of our mission with pARTners like, The Holmstad, Aurora and Batavia Public School Districts, Kane County Jail, and others.”

he debate between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones has been going on ever since they first crossed paths on the charts 54 years ago. The argument at the time, and one that still persists, was that the Beatles were a pop group and the Stones were a rock band: the boys next door vs. the bad boys of rock. So who’s better?

With brilliant musicianship and authentic costumes and gear, Abbey Road plays beloved songs spanning the Beatles’ career. They face off against renowned Stones tribute band Satisfaction - The International Rolling Stones Show, who offer a faithful rendition of the music and style of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the bad boys of the British Invasion.

trading places in quick set changes and ending the night with an all-out encore involving both bands. The band members have their outfits custom-made, since avid fans know exactly what the Beatles and Stones wore onstage during different time periods in their careers. There’s a lot of good-natured jabbing between the bands as well.

These two legendary bands will engage in an on-stage, throw down - a musical ‘showdown’ if you will – at 7:30 p.m. September 23 at the Hemmens Cultural Center. The event features tribute bands Abbey Road and Satisfaction - The International Rolling Stones Show.

The Elgin show is part of a 125 stop tour of the U.S., Australia and Canada and has been touring since 2011.The show also performs long term residencies for a number of the Harrah’s Casino properties. The production includes some of the more popular songs from the two rock pioneers and covers the scope of their musical careers, although the set list for Satisfaction usually includes Rolling Stones songs up to the 1980s.

“Without Beatlemania, the Stones might still be a cover band in London,” says Chris Overall, who plays Paul McCartney.

“They certainly have more pop songs but we’re a really great live show. The fans are in for an incredible night of music!” says LeGrand.

“It’s just a fun time and a cool back-and-forth nonstop show,” Overall says.

“Music fans never had a chance to see the Beatles and the Rolling Stones perform on the same marquee,” says Chris LeGrand, who plays Mick Jagger in the show. “Now, music aficionados can watch this debate play out on stage.”

Taking the side of the Fab Four is Abbey Road, one of the county’s top Beatles tribute bands.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that a group of actors have formed a professional theatre company right here in St. Charles. The area’s newest creative entity, Kane Repertory Theatre, established in the spring with hopes of bringing professional, intellectually stimulating theatre to the community.

The professional theatre company, made predominately of graduates of the Northern Illinois University MFA program, will stage its first production – Our Town by Thornton Wilder – the first three weekends in October at the Marquee Youth Stage, 619 W Main St. in St. Charles.

Every year I talk with families in April and May who want to spruce up their yards for prom and graduation that is a few weeks away. And sadly, every year I have to turn them away because our schedule is already booked out weeks past their event date. I’m always heartbroken to tell them that they really should have contacted me the previous year so that we could get ahead of the process and do some work in fall so that the yard is in tip top shape for the following spring. Fall is a great time to plant and if you get your ducks in a row now, you will have one less thing on your plate. Also, the weather in spring is so unpredictable that it can wreak

Take time now to walk around your yard and make a punch list. You may only have a few things to attend to or you may find that last winter and this summer were harder on the landscape than you realized. Do any shrubs damaged by the Polar Vortex need to be removed? It’s time to pull those dead boxwoods that are still lingering in yards in the Fox Valley….no….they are not coming back…sorry to say…I know, I know… we hoped, but they are toast so remove and replace them now while you can. Are your trees in need of a haircut? Late fall is an excellent time to do some tree pruning. Will you need to have leaves raked and mulch applied? Is the landscape just old and tired and in need of a refresh? All these things can be addressed right now and then they are off your mind during the stress of spring.

Fall is a great time to hire a landscape designer to solve all the landscape problems. Let us do the work for you. We’ll organize what needs to be done, schedule it appropriately, and tick one very big thing off your “honey-do” list. Landscaping is a process – like remodeling the inside of the house. scheduled no matter the season.

So now that the kids are back in school and your lives are returning to a bit of normalcy with routine, take a minute to think about next spring and give us a call. “The symposium offers an exciting chance to showcase our beautiful city to people from across the country who are eager to learn more about our community improvement practices and tour our parks, and cultural and historic sites,” says America in Bloom – St. Charles co-chair and Ward 5 Alderman Maureen Lewis.

America in Bloom is a national initiative that promotes beautification and encourages the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements, creating welcoming and vibrant places to live, work, and play.

Locally, American in Bloom - St. Charles is a group of residents, business people and government leaders who work together to improve St. Charles through landscaping, environmental, and heritage preservation projects.

“The America in Bloom program allows the Park District to showcase its parks, natural areas, and trails. Being part of this national program allowed us to learn how other communities address issues within our industry,

which has resulted in improved best practices,” says Holly Cabel, St. Charles Park District Director of Parks and Recreation .

America in Bloom - St. Charles enters the America in Bloom national program each year. St. Charles took home top honors in 2017, winning its population category, and then winning in the Circle of Champions in 2018.

The group organizes the Holiday Light Recycling program that diverts tons of lights from landfills each year. It handled the installation of medallions for downtown storm drains as a reminder these drains connect directly to the river. Members added new cement planters around town, recycling containers throughout the community, and helped to install festive lights on the First Street Plaza.

“Volunteerism is essential to the success of America in Bloom,” says America in Bloom – St. Charles co-chair Diane Cullen. “This effort brings people together and offers an opportunity to do something good for the community.”

And with the national event coming to the city in October, there’s plenty more to be done! Volunteers are needed for, among other things, assisting with tours downtown and work the registration table at Pheasant Run. All training will be provided.

F

or those facing a legal issue and in need of an attorney, the cost of hiring legal representation can be staggering. In truth, 1 in 3 Americans cannot afford an attorney. Sadly, America ranks 98th in the world for providing affordable access to justice. As a result, those involved in family, housing, employment, tax or immigration legal issues are left without recourse and facing injustice.

An attorney is uniquely skilled and qualified to solve many of the injustices in the world. And access to legal services coupled with the hope that is offered in the gospel is the work of Bruce Strom, CEO of Administer Justice/ Gospel Justice Initiative and Author of Gospel Justice. In 1999, Bruce was a highly successful trial lawyer who could no longer ignore the injustice

that many faced without the help of an attorney. He left his legal practice to start Administer Justice in 2000. After establishing six local gospel justice centers in Kane and DuPage counties who were meeting the legal needs of those in the local area, Bruce embraced a bigger vision of justice across the nation and began Gospel Justice Initiative in 2014.

Gospel Justice Initiative was born from the conviction that God’s people, as the body of Christ, have been called to step up and fill the justice gap in

their communities, accomplishing this through the planting and continued efforts of local Gospel Justice Centers, nationwide. GJI currently operates 91 such centers, including centers in Kane and DuPage counties, with a goal of launching 1,000 nationwide.

Gospel Justice Initiative engages with donors who fund and sustain the mission; churches and businesses who provide host sites; and attorneys and volunteers, such as prayer partners, interpreters and advocates, who create the justice team that provides hope and free legal services to those in need, with love, compassion and mercy.

To increase impact in the community, GJI is sponsoring its annual fundraiser, the “Open the Gates” of Justice Campaign, with keynote speaker Dr. Tony Evans, on Friday, Oct. 4, 6-9pm at the Drury Lane

Grand Ballroom, in Oakbrook, Illinois. Dr. Evans is the founder and senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, and author of over 100 books and Bible studies. The first African American to earn a doctorate of theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, he has been named one of the 12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World

by Baylor University.

The free event offers philanthropic donors an opportunity to hear Dr. Evans speak in support of the nationwide effort to bring justice to the underserved. Understanding REITs Unfortunately, I also learned that owning a lot of land was not a guarantee of wealth and prosperity.

The agricultural crisis that started with the 1980 US Grain Embargo resulted in many large farms going under. It was heart-breaking to see generational farms sold at auction leaving the once-proud owners penniless and homeless.

More recently, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 saw housing prices drop 31.8% which was more than the price plunge during the Great Depression. Although this event largely reframed the desirability of homeownership among many, the overall allure of real estate ownership remains strong. Often investors who may still be a bit nervous about home ownership may not hesitate to put their money into Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). REITs can be attractive as their performance may not directly correlate to stocks or bonds and have become a popular asset class in diversified portfolios.

Let’s take a brief look at what they are and how they work.

Investing in real estate can hold a special allure and has a long history of being equated to wealth. Growing up on a multi-generational farm in WI, I learned at a young age who owned what farms and how many acres they owned. Those running the largest operations were held in highest esteem.

 WHAT ARE REITS? REITs were “born” in 1960 when Congress established them as an amendment to the Cigar Excise Tax Extension of 1960. They are companies that buy, sell, develop and operate real estate assets and distribute their profits to investors.

 TYPES OF REITS There are many different types and each has underlying investments that make it unique. Broadly speaking, however, REITs can be distinguished by their income source and their availability to investors as follows: Most REITs focus on a particular industry or location. For instance, one REIT may own only hospitals and clinics in an effort to gain exposure to the medical industry. Smaller REITs might seek out a variety of building types and only operate in a few local cities.

investors an easy way to participate in the real estate market—similar to how mutual funds allow for easy participation in the stock market.

Today, REITs come in a variety of styles and carry different types of exposure, with some requiring high levels of investor expertise to use.

To qualify as a REIT, a company must—among other things—hold 75 percent of its assets in real estate, distribute 90 percent of its taxable income to investors, be operated by a board of directors and have at least 100 investors.

Most REITs are registered with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). “Private REITs” do not need to register with the SEC but still must meet the aforementioned operating requirements of a REIT.

 INVESTOR AVAILABILITY: PUBLIC, NON-PUBLICLY TRADED, OR PRIVATE The most easily accessible REITs are those with shares publicly listed and traded on the exchanges. These are SEC registered and are meant to have a high level of investor transparency. Since these REITs are traded just like stocks, companies have created REIT mutual funds and REIT exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that allow investors to broaden their real estate exposure rather than keeping it concentrated in a single REIT. A REIT that does not allow its shares to be listed publicly can choose whether to register with the SEC. If it does, it becomes a “non-traded REIT” that has rights and regulations similar to those of other public companies. If it does not register, it becomes a “private REIT.” Private REITs are not required to be as transparent with their investors. Private REITs carry a high level of risk and are generally only available to accredited investors (those with over $1 million in investable assets).

As part of the SEC’s regulations, nontraded REITs are required to have a predetermined end date. On the end date, the REIT must either liquidate and distribute its assets to shareholders or become a publicly traded REIT.  POTENTIAL DRAWBACKS AND RISKS Every REIT (like every investment) is subject to its own risks—some apply to all REITs, while some are unique to each REIT type. Here are a few to keep in mind: TAX RATES: dividends are typically treated as ordinary income for tax purposes which are higher than longterm capital gains rates.

MARKET RISK: REITs are subject to the success and needs of the renters or property owners and are not immune to economic fluctuations.

INTEREST AND DEFAULT RISK: mortgage REITs can be subject to underlying valuation swings if inflation or interest rates rise and/or the underlying borrowers creditworthiness erodes.

LIQUIDITY RISKS: because they are not traded on exchanges, shares of non-traded and private REITs can be very illiquid. Investors in these REITs may not be able to sell their shares for many years or could face penalties and loss of principal for selling their shares.

TRANSPARENCY: Non-traded and private REITs are less transparent than public REITs and may not report sales of assets or sources of income to investors. This means that earnings paid to REIT investors may not be stable and could actually be the result of decisions that damage the current or potential value of the REIT. Even with records filed at the SEC (non-traded REITs file reports, private REITs do not), investors cannot clearly predict a fair value when their REITs close or they sell off their shares.

FEES: are one of the most significant drawbacks of non-traded and private REITs. Whereas publicly traded REITs have trading fees similar to those on mutual funds, non-traded and private REITs carry huge commissions and fees that can easily exceed 10-15% of the principal investment.

We have had the privilege of meeting smart, successful professionals and non-profits who were sold non-publicly traded REITs and later found them to be inappropriate, worthless, or both. EDITOR’S NOTE Our monthly travel writer and outdoor enthusiast Pete Stadalsky just completed his journey down the Continental Divide by mountain bike, from Banff, Canada to Mexico. The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route is the world’s longest off-road cycling route, over old railroad routes, dirt roads, marshes, rivers and of course, snow covered peaks. The entire trip was estimated to take 55 days, and he checked in last month, about halfway through the excursion, so we could track his progress and hear all the gritty details!
